Beaconsfield v Pakenham Doveton v Officer Narre Warren v Tooradin-Dalmore Cranbourne v Berwick

AFL South East I know that this is a senior football record, however I wanted to share with you my increasing concern over the player, officials and spectator behaviour in junior football across the region. Within the AFL South Region there are two major junior leagues governed by AFL South East (FDJFL and SEJ), plus the MPJFL. In recent times all three have seen the need to instigate investigations concerning poor behaviour, both on and off the ground. Clubs will have seen recent media about the State Government’s release of a Fair Play Code – a code of conduct for sport and recreation in Victoria. At the heart of the code are five core values - integrity, respect, responsibility, fairness and safety. While governments, leagues and umpires all have a role in outlawing poor behaviour, for me the biggest influence is the culture of the club involved. I was horrified to read of a case at a recent U11’s game (yes U11’s!) that an umpire called a game off early, left the game in tears and said he would never umpire again, after the abuse he received. Shameful on the competing clubs that they would allow such a thing to happen to a 14-yearold! We will fully support the Fair Play Code and I hope clubs do as well. Where senior clubs are aligned to junior clubs, I think it would be a fantastic step if you were to join together in stamping out poor behaviour. Nothing wrong with passion and vocal support, which is certainly the conduct in the majority. But judging by the number

of incident reports coming into our office, the poor behaviour minority is increasing. I call on clubs to take an active role in changing the culture in this area. I know some clubs take a very strong stance on trying to eliminate inappropriate behaviour. The message is clear that clubs should not tolerate bad behaviour, abuse or violence and it should be written into their own code of conduct that people who display such traits are not wanted. On the field we are back to normal competition this week after the interleague break. At Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve we had a pretty good day against our neighbour AFL Yarra Ranges. In the Netball our U17’s had a win; however, the senior team went down to a very competitive Yarra Ranges team. Thank you to the respective coaches Matt Cooke and Karen Meredith and their assistants for the time and effort they put in in preparing the girls for the interleague fixtures. Both sides represented the league very well. Over on the Holm Park No. 2 football ground the SEFNL U19 football side had a very comfortable win over AFL Yarra Ranges. Coached by Leigh McQuillen, it was a quality performance by the boys. Both sides had a number of players who had played senior football, so the future looks bright for football in the region. In the senior game, it was a tight battle for a half, with SEFNL out by 18 points at half time against AFL Yarra Ranges. However, after half time the SEFNL boys clicked into another gear and played an exciting brand of running football. It was a very impressive performance and the skills of the game were on show to enable them to run out easy winners. Congratulations to Rhys Nisbet and his support staff on the preparation for the game. The players were clearly committed and played accordingly. Thank you also to the Beaconsfield FNC for hosting all matches on the weekend. The running of the event was precise and well organised, and I commend the efforts of Troy Robinson, his committee and players who all contributed to a successful day. This week it is back to the SEFNL competition and I look forward to being at Casey Fields to see many of the interleague players representing their clubs when Cranbourne take on Berwick. Marc Holt and Tim Gunn were on fire as team mates last week, but this week they will face off as opponents. Over half the interleague side came from these two clubs, so it will be a fascinating battle. Officer has its chance to re-establish itself in the top five, a place reserved for Doveton in recent years, when it takes on the Doves at AJ Robinson Oval. Looking forward to another competitive round of football

AFL Vic Country Top-10 a fitting reward for SEFNL 2019 COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS RANKINGS RELEASED The South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) has jumped to tenth on the official rankings for the 2019 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships following the big win over AFL Yarra Ranges last week. Thirty-two community football leagues have been assigned new nominal rankings following their participation in the 2018 Championships, which saw the best senior players from across Victoria go head-to-head in a one off interleague match. Eastern Football League has secured the numberone ranking after defeating former reigning premiers Geelong Football Netball League by 42-points at Etihad Stadium. For the first time, two metropolitan leagues will face off in the top-ranked match in 2019 after the Northern Football Netball League rose to second position following a 40-point win over Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. The loss sees Geelong FNL drop to third place, Mornington Peninsula NFL slip to fifth spot, while a 76-point win over the Western Region Football League has seen Ovens and Murray Football League secure fourth place in season 2019. Rounding out the top ten ranking positions are Goulburn Valley (sixth), Western Region (seventh), Hampden (eighth), Ballarat (ninth) and South East FNL (tenth). The 2019 Rankings list does not provide a likely schedule of matches for 2019, with leagues given the opportunity to opt-in or withdraw from the competition each season. Final entries for participation in the 2019 season are not requested by AFL Victoria until the end of the year to allow leagues sufficient time to decide whether they wish to participate in the competition the following year. Star-studded SEFNL makes it six from seven By David Nagel The miraculous climb of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) continued at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday with SEFNL claiming a 16.13.109 to 10.13.73 victory over AFL Yarra Ranges in the 2018 WorkSafe Community Championships. The victory sealed a meteoric rise for SEFNL who began the restructured format of interleague football from a ranking of 17 back in 2012. The Demons have since won six of seven outings, defeating Nepean, Wimmera, Bellarine, Sunraysia, Murray and AFL Yarra Ranges to become the number-seven ranked country league in the state. Coach Rhys Nisbet was super proud of his charges. “I thought the way the players committed to the whole program from the outset was just outstanding,” Nisbet said. “We seemed to build a really strong bond very quickly and I think that showed in the way the players attacked the game. They showed a real care for each other and played like they’d been team mates for years. “I’d like to thank the players, coaches and support staff for putting in such a great effort through the whole campaign.” Nisbet’s pre-game speech addressed the magnificent contribution of co-captain Michael Collins, who was playing his tenth interleague game, while Cranbourne’s Troy Tharle was praised for his enthusiasm after a late call up to replace Doveton’s Gach Nyuon. The game was tight early with Yarra Ranges hitting the post on multiple occasions before SEFNL hit its straps

midway through the second quarter. Goals to best-on-ground Tim Gunn, then Ryan Jones, and a long-bomb to Ash Smith saw the Demons open up a three-goal lead at half time. SEFNL then ran rampant early in the third , with Luke Sheppard, Gunn, Mitch Cotter and Marc Holt extending the lead to 41 points at the 11-minute mark of the third quarter. The standard of play was exceptional, with several goals the result of some hard-running play from one end of the ground to the other. Gunn was a thoroughly-deserving best on ground, with Berwick teammates Michael Riseley and Smith controlling things from the back half. Cotter was brilliant on debut, while Brad Scalzo, Trent Cody and Madi Andrews joined Collins and Tharle in a tenacious midfield group. Gunn finished with four, Jones and Holt three, while Smith’s two nuggets off half back broke the game open at crucial stages. “It was hard to single blokes out, it was a great team effort, but I thought the effort of Troy Tharle to come into the team late and compete in the ruck played a big part in the win,” Nisbet said. The SEFNL Under 19s were also impressive in a 12.11.83 to 3.7.25 victory over AFL Yarra Ranges. Myles Currie kicked three for the winners while Narre Warren’s Tom Miller was awarded the best on ground medal by the coaches. See pages 24 and 25 for pictures, page 26 for an Under-19 review, and pages 44 and 45 for a full recap of all the netball action.

Footy Preview A battle of the heavyweights By David Nagel

They have dominated the football landscape for the last three years but Cranbourne and Berwick will be fighting for a different prize when the powerhouse clubs collide in a huge clash at Casey Fields today. The Eagles, winners of the 2016 premiership, and the Wickers, the 2015 and ’17 champions, are all of a sudden chasing tail after the outstanding start to the season of the Narre Warren Football Club. The prize on offer right now – to be the number-one challenger! Let’s start with the Eagles, who still have a bit to prove under first-year coach Steve O’Brien after a three-two start to the season. Facts are facts, and the simple fact is the Eagles have failed to fire against the better teams in the competition this year. They rode an emotional roller-coaster in a 16-point loss to Narre Warren in round one and backed that up with an uninspiring eight-point loss to Beaconsfield. Follow-up wins over Tooradin and Pakenham were nobrainers, adding to a Good Friday victory over Doveton. Three wins, against the bottom-three teams in the competition. The Eagles had a couple of nervous moments against Pakenham last time out, leading by just nine points at half time before extending to a 56-point victory. Lewis Vella was sensational on debut, booting four goals, while Glenn Osborne, Brandon Wapshott and Dillan Bass mopped up everything in defence. Shaun Marusic continues to thrive on the added responsibility through the midfield, while the return of superstar full-forward Marc Holt brought a smile to the Eagles’ faces. Holt’s remarkable career now sits at 971 goals with a magnificent milestone now looming on the horizon. These two teams know plenty about each other with both having six players represent SEFNL last weekend. Berwick’s strength revolves around its elite quality and run out of defence. Ash Smith and Michael Riseley are sensational footballers, and getting better and better as a unit after roughly 60 games together in the same colours. Smith can kick a long goal, but his ability to find the clean hands of Riseley with a kick out from full back is becoming the stuff of legend. That play is normally followed by some quick hands to a free-flowing Luke Sheppard, Madi Andrews or Lucas Jellyman-Turner and all of a sudden, the Wickers are building an attack. The Smith-Riseley combination is one of the best in country football and one the Eagles will need to quell to be a realistic chance in this one. We won’t open old wounds and go into details, but there is a lot of history between these two teams over the last few years. Reports, suspensions, appeals – it’s a rivalry that

8

Can Cranbourne stop the influence of Berwick defender Michael Riseley? has had it all both on and off the footy field. But there is a strong core of respect – obvious when the dozen players took to the field in the same colours last weekend. Cranbourne, looking to make its mark, against Berwick, looking at the toughest fortnight of its season - backing up against Narre Warren next week. It should be a beauty – it’s the Wickers by 13 points. Beaconsfield will look to continue its dominant form against the bottom four teams when it welcomes Pakenham to Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles have been frightening in recent times, smashing Tooradin by 100 points and then crushing Officer by an equally-impressive 95. The big story has been the form of Nathan Langley, the former Cora Lynn star who struggled early in the season before kicking 17 goals in his last two outings. Langley is a confidence player, and Stephen Morey will need to be on his toes when the likely match up stands beside Langley this afternoon. The Lions, well they’ve been a lot better than what people expected and won’t be ruling themselves out of a top-five finish this season. They are showing some fight, with Jordy and Zac Stewart, Jimmy Harrison, JJ Peni and Cooper Sheppard adding a different dimension this year. And the Lions will only get better with a stack of new faces having only played a handful of games together.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview The Eagles will win, but it may be closer than expected! Doveton and Officer will be hoping to turn their recent poor form around when the Doves and Kangaroos square off at Robinson Oval. The Doves are a very young team on paper, with a handful of experienced players like Russ Gabriel, Matt Jameson, Jake Dermott and Aaron Henwood trying to educate these youngsters on the run. Mitch Cotter is emerging as a fine young talent, while Tyson Bellinger, Shannon Brennan and Beau Anthony are providing some positive signs for the future. The interleague break came at the perfect time for Officer. They have been terrible in recent performances against Narre Warren and Beaconsfield and should have a steely desire to rectify the situation against the Doves and Cranbourne leading into the Queen’s Birthday weekend. It’s not surprising that Ben Tivendale, Matty Clarke and Blair Allan have shown some pride in the jumper recently, they just need some mates to jump on board. It won’t be pretty, but Officer should get the choccies by 23 points. And Narre Warren will make it six from six when it plays host to Tooradin-Dalmore at Kalora Park. The Magpies don’t have a weak link at the minute with its bottom-six players very hard to identify. The younger generation of players like Tom Miller, Jesse Davies, Mitch Cox and Cory Machaya have slotted right in and are making a genuine contribution to team success, while Trent Shinners and Brad Scalzo have added a touch of class around the ground. Shinners, along with Michael Collins, Aaron Wilson, Jake Richardson and Trent Papworth must be among the most mobile big-strong bodies in the competition. Nick Lang, Michael Hobbs and Dean Warry will try hard – but the Seagulls will go down by plenty.

Footy Notes Officer Last round was a tough one for the club with all or our senior men’s teams being beaten convincingly by an outstanding Beaconsfield outfit. Whilst there is not much that can be taken from last weekend, fortunately a week is a long time in football and we have the opportunity to put a poor performance behind us this weekend when we face Doveton. Last weekend saw many players enjoy a weekend away from football. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of our Captain Matthew Clarke who was named Vice Captain of the SEFNL team for 2018. Another of our players Harry Dean also represented the league in the U/19’s clash and in tough and congested conditions Harry had a great game demonstrating excellent skills by hand and foot. Congratulations on an outstanding weekend of football Clarke and Harry! Good luck to all our team this weekend Go Roos!!! #RespectAllFearNone e) rocfc@icloud.com f) https://www.facebook.com/OfficerSeniorFC/ w) http://officerseniorfc.com.au/ In) https://www.instagram.com/roc_osfc/

Pakenham Reserves - The reserves in round 5 travelled down to Cranbourne after playing strong football against Berwick for 3 quarters the week before, the belief was that we could win. We kicked with the wind in the first quarter and kicked our only goal for the game. We were outplayed by a committed team who showed us how to play team football and made us pay for every turn over. We need to learn from this defeat and move forward quickly. It’s time to buy in and play team football. Seniors - So close but yet so far! That could be our catch cry so far this season and our game against Cranbourne on the weekend was no exception. With a very young and inexperienced squad, it was great that we were able to introduce another debutante Blake Millier for his first game and he looked at home with the speed and pressure against a quality outfit. Cranbourne were able to get the jump on us in the 1st quarter with our backline under immense pressure but the cool heads of the Cardona, Morey & the Stewart brothers, ensured we were only down by 17 points at quarter time.

In the 2nd quarter, our dedicated supporters would have been pleased with the brand of football we’re capable of and it certainly was our best, kicking 6 goals and going into the long break down by only 9 points. It took all 22 players to work for each other combined with our pressure, it was pleasing to see the boys get the rewards they richly deserve. Unfortunately, in our 2nd half we weren’t able to keep up the scoreboard pressure due to the quality of Cranbourne, some key injuries and basic skill errors which resulted in a disappointing 56 point loss but overall we couldn’t question the players commitment & effort over the game. Best players were Zac Stewart & Stephen Morey down back but all our defenders played well considering the pressure they were under. JJ Peni looked dangerous around goals, Jafarr Ocaa who kicked a couple of great goals as well as evergreen Steve O’Bryan who gave us good drive out of the middle. We look forward to having next weekend off but we’re really excited about our next challenge of taking on another great side in Beaconsfield. Our women’s team are set to take on Mornington this week at Alexandra Park. The players are improving every week and hopes are high for an awesome game. The Club would like to invite all Life Members and financial members to a special general meeting on Wednesday, 5th June – upstairs at the clubrooms – 7pm. This meeting is to decide the future of the Club so please attend to ensure your vote is counted in this important issue. Also, the tickets for our annual $10,000 draw have been distributed and are available for purchase from the players, or the Club. Grab you favourite player and buy a ticket for a great night and a chance to go into the draw. Go Pakky!

Berwick Pink Ribbon day saw players and supporters arriving to pink goal posts and a pink ball for the senior game. It was also the unveiling of our new coterie room in our annual Ladies Day Event that was enjoyed by 60 ladies. With plenty of fine food and wine it was the place to be. Thanks to all those who contributed over the last month in making this extraordinary project a reality. Takes me back to my younger days when volunteer labour, donations and the like enabled the club to build the current rooms with no debt and actually own them. I remember the entire senior list de-rusting the massive steel frame with wire brushes and steel wool. Quite a sight to see 50 guys crawling over every square inch. Thats what clubs are built on!!

Footy Notes Back to the football, Berwick achieved 3 strong wins in all grades. This was a tough day for Tooradin and not a reflection on the effort of the players and committee, but as I said in the post game address, more an indictment on AFL Vic’s ability to get divisional football into the region. Congrats to Rhys and the boys for a strong win in the interleague match, especially Gunny who took the medal CASINO NIGHT - Tonite Past Players which is also the 40 year anniversary of the 1978 Premiership. - June 16th V Officer

Beaconsfield This week we welcome Pakenham to Holm Park The under 19s looks likely to be a good contest with both teams in very good form coming into this round. The Beacy boys are flying at the moment and with 9 boys representing the club at interleague I’m sure they will be up and about this week The reserves coming off back to back wins under the guidance of Mitch Welsh are starting to show signs of some very good football. Away from game day they are working very hard so we look forward to another excellent contest today for the boys Macca and team are finally starting to find the groove we know they are capable off and after the last couple of weeks we are starting to see the positive signs that will make them contest all year Our senior women’s are welcomed back for there second home game of the season after a very tough game against Mornington we hope they can bounce back today and show the level of determination that they have amongst them to get it done last week we witnessed massive crowds for the interleague and VFL and there was a tremendous level of support by the playing group and mostly the volunteers yet again so well done and thank you the clubs annual club 30 is fast approaching with Jason Ackermanis being the key for the night. Tickets are selling fast and this will be an absolute ripper of a night. For all ticket enquires please see Geoff McGowan/ Mark Hornstra The Major raffle is fast selling out with only 500 tickets on offer and some brilliant prizes this year don’t be disappointed if you cant get a ticket all players have tickets for sales if not speak with Geoff for a ticket good luck Beacy today

Narre Warren

Today we host Tooradin, at their request, in a fixture originally scheduled as their home game. In doing so Narre returns the gesture that both Berwick and Officer afforded us in Round 2 & 4 when our club was not in a position to use our ground. Great to see the spirit of cooperation that exists among the clubs in our league when things don’t always go to plan. Congratulations to the players who represented our club in Inter-league senior and Under 19 teams last weekend. They all did us proud. Well done to SEFNL coach Rhys Nisbet and his coaching group on a successful campaign that afforded the participating players an enjoyable and memorable experience that will certainly contribute to their development as footballers. SEFNL’s six-goal winning margin in the Seniors wasn’t indicative of the very competitive match, and our opponents showed that the Yarra Ranges league certainly offers a viable base for those SEFNL clubs who may choose to make their futures there from 2019. On balance this still appears to be Narre’s best option, enabling us to maintain an integrated Football Netball club, and we believe several other SEFNL clubs are thinking the same. Last local round Narre hosted Doveton. Thanks again for everyone’s patience and cooperation as we continue to do things ‘on the fly’ in lieu of the completion of our building works. Our Ones had a 17-goal win, but the Doves certainly showed plenty of character in fighting the game out with a four-goal last quarter. You feel their first win won’t be too far away. For Narre, Richo was in good form, Trent Cody dominated with four goals from the midfield while Stewie Scanlon kicked three and featured in several other score involvements. Narre’s Twos won by a similar margin keeping an undermanned Doveton scoreless after quarter time. Rhys Dempster starred with 3 but could have had six with a straighter boot. Hayden Johnston and Jake Boccari also stood out. One of our first major social functions in our new social club at Fox Road will be our annual NWFNC Berwick Mazda Corporate Lunch. Entertainment this year will feature former AFL champion and media personality Matthew Lloyd; local Australian cricket hero James Pattinson and comedian Chris Bennett. $120 per person includes 3 course meal with beer, wine and soft drinks; memorabilia auctions and raffles. It’s on Friday 6 July - 12.00 midday to 4.30 pm. Always a sell-out. Contact Dash on 0410 593280 or Stuey Stephenson on 0419820024 for bookings. Feature Sponsor – JayQ Plastering Thanks to the team at JayQ Plastering for getting on board as a major sponsor again. Your ongoing support is amazing, including your recent contribution to the interior work on our new social club.

Footy Notes Cranbourne

Tooradin-Dalmore

First of all congratulations go out to all of our interleague representatives who did not only the league, but the Cranbourne Football Netball Club very proud last Saturday. On behalf of the club congratulations to Ryan Jones, Anthony Vella, Luke Bee-Hugo, Dillan Bass, Marc Holt and the late call-up Troy Tharle for helping the SEFNL team achieve a great victory. And to Cameron Angus, Kyle Nunn and Cooper Reilly, well done on your efforts in making it a big day for SEFNL in the Under-19s. And what an effort from our very own Emily Wallace to be captain of the first-ever women’s interleague team. Well done to Emily and her teammates Parris Stahl, Tahlia Fellows and Alicia Heins for a fantastic performance against Northern. It was great to have the Train back on the park against Pakenham last time out but even he was overshadowed by a fantastic debut from exciting youngster Lewis Vella. His four goals played a key role in our big win over the Lions. Today we host a great rival in Berwick, who also made a significant contribution to last week’s interleague victory over Yarra Ranges. It is always a great contest against the Wickers and we look forward to a big crowd attending what is sure to be a cracking game of football. Don’t forget that our next home game will be a standalone fixture against Doveton on the Saturday of the Queen’s Birthday, June 9.

Well done to the Tooradin-Dalmore netballers, Ebony Dolan, Alexandra Duff and Sara Duncan, who represented SEFNL with such distinction last Saturday. We travel to Narre Warren this week knowing the task is a huge one but very optimistic that we can turn our recent form around. Let’s get behind the Seagulls and make it a big day for the club. Go you Seagulls!

Doveton Congratulations to one of the young guns of very proud football club with Mitch Cotter named in the best players for the SEFNL seniors against AFL Yarra Ranges last week. For an 18-year-old to shine against some of the best footballers in Country Victoria was a huge boost for the club, well done Mitch from all at Doveton. We had a tough day at the office in our last game of footy against a slick Narre Warren, who must nearly be the benchmark of the competition right now. Matty Boyd, Shannon Brennan and Riley D’Arcy were terrific against really good opposition. Today we welcome Officer to Robinson Oval with the boys keen to turn our season around. The Kangaroos have been struggling a little themselves in recent times and a huge effort today could see our first four points banked for the season. We have another home game against Beaconsfield next week before we travel to Cranbourne for the big game on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

SEWF Interleague SEWF prevail in an extra-time thriller By David Nagel

White Black PMS 165 C

It took two heart-stopping periods of extra time for South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) to claim a history-making one-point victory over the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) at Preston City Oval on Saturday. The only women’s game in the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships ended with scores tied at 4.6.30 apiece – with SEWF securing a thrilling victory with a Chloe Hunt point in the opening minute of a second extra time. It was a game that left players exhausted, with coaches and spectators gasping for air after a magnificent finish to a wonderful exhibition of football. “It was a heart stopper in every sense, I don’t think I can remember my heart beating for the last 10 minutes of the game,“ said winning SEWF coach Megan Snart. “I’m just so incredibly proud of the team for fighting so hard, it was a real wrestle of momentum for most of the game. One team would play good football, then the other, it was just a great game of football and a great contest all day.” Northern took the early lead through Ashleigh Bayes, before Hunt answered with the first of her three goals to see SEWF take a one-point lead at quarter time. A Hunt mark and goal early in the second quarter saw SEWF extend its lead to four points at the main break. Play opened up at the start of the third term, Sarah Astone kicking SEWF out to a 10-point lead before Northern kicked two in a minute, with goals to Tara Chetcuti and Cassie Hurst seeing the home side regain the lead. SEWF drew level at three-quarter time, setting up a thrilling final quarter. Hunt, who proved the difference between the two teams in the end, ran into an open goal at the start of the last term, before Hurst responded with an inspirational piece of play at the 12-minute mark. A strong tackle, which saw Jess Adams leave the field, was duly converted by Hurst to see scores locked away once again. Northern pushed, with a crucial marking contest between SEWF’s Riley Cridland and Northern’s Linda Thorp going Cridland’s way – with SEWF holding on desperately to force extra time. The teams couldn’t be split in the first five minutes of extra time before Hunt’s point saw the visitors celebrate in style. Snart said her girls thoroughly deserved their final siren celebration. “I just think they were really proud of what they had achieved, coming together just four weeks out from the game and gelling the way they did was just an incredible effort from everyone involved,” she said. “For some of these girls who have an eye on the future, this was the next level, the highest level they had played at and it was a real credit to them the way they withstood the challenge. “We knew we had a good mix and a good bond, but how that translated into game day was a bit of an unknown, and so was the calibre of the opposition.” Snart said there was nothing between the two teams all day. “The teams were very well matched for pace and skill but I was most pleased with our endeavour to tackle and our all-round pressure,” she said. “We had our structures, but the effort the team produced made that small amount of difference in the end.” Olivia Aing, an Eastern Devils premiership player last year, was named SEWF’s best player after a gutsy display that saw her on numerous occasions put her body on the line. “Olivia has always had that relentless attack on the ball, she doesn’t know any other way, but there were so many other good players as well,” Snart said. “Chloe (Hunt) kicked three goals so was super important and I thought Jess Johnston played a terrific game through the midfield. Westy (Michelle West) did well on a wing and Lauren Law played a huge role late in the game, playing a tagging role to perfection. “And I thought Chelsea (Wilkinson), Tayla (Tatterson) and Belinda Ousley were also really good players throughout the course of the day.” Snart said she was fully spent by the final siren, with two key emotions pumping through her veins. “Pride and relief, they’re the two things I felt most after the game,” she said. “I put a lot of pressure on myself, coming up against such an experienced coach in Chyloe Kurdas, and it was just that feeling of pure relief that got me in the end.” Ellie Koiker, Sarah Wright, Catherine O’Bryan and ruckman Sabrin Nyawela were named Northern’s best players. Young SEFNL talent comes shining through. There’s no doubting the outstanding young talent on offer in the South East Football Netball League after the SEFNL under 19s score an emphatic 58-point victory over AFL Yarra Ranges at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. The Demons were sharp, both physically and mentally, riding a game-plan built on fast ball movement to a 12.11.83 to 3.7.25 triumph.

“Tommy Miller’s an exceptional football talent and we had a handful of others with senior experience as well, so we knew we had the exposure to good football,” McQuillen said, before thanking his coaching staff and SEFNL for the opportunity. Brodie Entwistle, Jafar Ocaa, Connor Guley and Jahvon Bergman were all terrific contributors in the victory.

Coach Leigh McQuillen was delighted with his team’s ability to absorb a new game plan at short notice. “The boys have been receptive from the start, they’re really coachable and learnt some structures that they’re probably not accustomed to at club level,” McQuillen said. “We pressed in certain areas, but at the end of the day it was all about trying to keep the ball in motion, trying to play quick, and if you saw someone free you had to give it. We implemented it well for three and a half quarters and we got the result we came for.” Beaconsfield’s Myles Currie kicked three important goals, while his Eagles’ teammates Jack Docherty and Luke Bettio chimed in with a couple each. Berwick’s Kane Tyrrell also kicked two, while Narre Warren’s Tom Miller won the best on ground award for an outstanding game through the midfield.

Umpires Training takes all types They Train? Who Knew… Did you know that umpires train? No, I don’t mean they catch trains everywhere because they’re incapable of driving. But then again if their driving ability is anything like their umpiring competency, well…you fill in the rest. Train (verb) 1. the act of preparation by exercise and diet in an attempt to reach or maintain peak physical fitness in preparation for a specific sport or event (Oxford Dictionaries) 2. To prepare by exercise, diet, instruction, etc., for any physical contest (Webster’s 1913 Dictionary pg2043 or somewhere near) So you’re intrigued now I guess? The whole of idea of an umpire actually training. Bet you always thought they just rocked up to a game each week with some different spud that wouldn’t know what a football was even if it him in the schnoz. Hold on…pause that thought process. Umpires actually chuck on some sporting attire (got to at least look the part), dawdle out onto an oval and get their boogie on. That’s all training is isn’t it? Just a little boogie? But that’s not the end of it. We actually do it twice. No…not just twice through the year, but TWO dedicated nights every week. Yeah shock, horror. Goalies meander around like lost sheep; Boundaries chase the rabbit around the track like a donkey follows a carrot, and fieldies, well they just prance around like world leaders…big in voice but small in substance. In all seriousness, surely, you’d like to generally hear about the training regimes of the various umpiring disciplines that have stricter fitness requirements than players if they want to have any possible crack at making it up town. What really happens on those cold dark nights on a rundown oval that no one actually knows exist? So here it is…the typical training night… Those little whippet boundaries: Well…this may be the one thing that doesn’t come as a surprise…they run. And they run, and they continue to run. Just like match day, all they actually do is stand one behind the other and trail the fat white line around the ground. That’s all there really is to

it. Whoops...forgot something…every so often they stop, take 15 minutes and throw the ball somewhere 55 metres from where the ruck contest would actually be. The goalies: Ever seen one run? No…? Neither have I. Carrying their white flags through the gate onto the less than pristine grass the goalies stop a couple of metres in, line up along the boundary line, wave their white flags towards the club rooms, and head straight for the bar for a hotdog. Why they even bother putting a tracksuit on is a mystery to all. Oh…sorry…this writer has just been tapped on the shoulder by a disgruntled goal umpire unimpressed by those comments. If, time permitted and a rewrite was possible the above should read “...and head straight to the bar for a minimum of three hotdogs.” Sincerest of apologies to all insulted goal umpires for this error. Then lastly, the big-headed fieldies; Wrapped in bubble wrap and wearing noise-cancelling headphones the fieldies prance around perfecting their delicate “holding the ball” action and ball ups. Pity they still can’t get either right. Bet you always wondered why they were so precious? Well, plain and simple…they’re trained that way. So there you have it. Umpires do actually train. But in saying that it’s nothing this writer would ever write home about… Get Involved SUA are always on the lookout for those crazy individuals who want to become umpires. It takes a certain type of person to want to umpire, but those people who take the brave step, often benefit greatly from all umpiring offers. If you love the game and you want to keep fit, learn life skills, meet new friends and earn some money then umpiring is for you. Netball Preview Two great clubs to lock horns By David Nagel Tooradin-Dalmore has overcome every challenge put before it in 2018 but faces another huge test when the Seagulls travel to Kalora Park to take on second-placed Narre Warren. The Seagulls have only seriously been tested on one occasion this year, pushed all the way in a 42-39 victory over Beaconsfield, but need to overcome a Magpies’ outfit keen to claim their biggest scalp of the season. The Magpies have been involved in some tight contests this year, winning three of their four games by singledigit margins. But that resilience to dig deep in wins over Cranbourne (42-38), ROC (51-47) and Doveton (47-45) has the Magpies perfectly placed at a shot to win their third premiership in the last four years. They were very courageous against Doveton, turning a 3435 deficit at three-quarter time into a stunning two-goal win. Britt Mashado (C), Carly Stagg (WA) and Erin Clark (WD) gave the Magpies the edge in the final term, while Jemma Osborne (GS) was as cool as a cucumber under the ring. Osborne scored 11 of her team’s 13 goals in the final quarter to play a huge part in the victory. Kealeigh Brown (GA), Caitlin Stephens (GD) and Caitlin Egan (GK) also contributed to the win, but Osborne’s ability to thrive under pressure stood out when the game was on the line. The Magpies are going to need to stand tall against the Seagulls – clearly the team to beat for this year’s title. Kelly Andrews has the Seagulls right on track for back-toback flags, with her star-studded line up warming up for this week’s big clash with a thumping 67-25 victory over Berwick. The Seagulls produced a stunning first quarter, scoring 23-4 to send a very clear message that they still have the hunger to succeed. Alex Maher (GS) scored 13 and Jess Cox (GA) 10 in a brilliant first quarter display before Alex Duff joined the goal-scoring party. Tara Smith (C, WA) was the only player to play all four quarters as the Seagulls exercised the high-quality of depth on their list. It’s that elite quality all over the court that will see the Seagulls win by a seven or eight -goal margin. Doveton and ROC will clash for the second time this year when the two teams collide at Robinson Oval. The round-one encounter saw the Kangaroos prevail 5338 in a surprisingly lop-sided contest. The Kangas have since gone on to defeat Pakenham, and then pull off one of the surprise victories of the season against Beaconsfield, 37-33, to prove that round-one victory was no fluke. The Kangaroos stunned the Eagles with a dominant first half, leading by eight, before Kaela Hughes and her girls made a late charge.

There was no place for the faint hearted when Beaconsfield’s Kaela Hughes and ROC’s Jamilah Ferns went at it back in round five. But the efforts of Laura Quinn (GK) and Jamilah Ferns (GD) in defence, and the midcourt play of Ellie Keen (C) and Sidney Kneebone (WA) made sure the Kangaroos would bank their biggest win of the season. But Doveton will be no pushover, with Mikaela Dakic (GK), Mel Webster (GD) and Liz Edwards (WD) sure to make life difficult, while Hayley Stewart and Zali Mifsud are two of the best emerging talents in the game. This one will be close – but we’ll go for Doveton to win by six. Cranbourne coach Donna Wilson will be breathing a huge sigh of relief after her team finally broke its duck against Pakenham last start and the Eagles will look to continue their resurgence against Berwick at Casey Fields. The Eagles’ season got off on the wrong foot, losing to Doveton on Good Friday, with games against Narre Warren, Beaconsfield and Tooradin not allowing them to regain their alignment. But now they’ve tasted victory, the Eagles could get on a roll. Tara Cecil (GD), Steph Ryan (C) and Nat Sparks (WA) are all quality players who will fancy their chances of defeating Berwick, ROC and Doveton over the next three weeks to work their way into contention.

29

Netball Preview Kassidy Withers (GA) and Emma Clarke (GS) are dangerous players for the Wickers who will need to be monitored closely by the Eagles. But Wilson and her team will have enough class to prevail by a double-digit margin at the final whistle. And Beaconsfield and Pakenham complete the round when they go toe-to-toe at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles won’t be happy after going down to ROC last week and high-calibre players like Dani Cameron, Ash Gill and Bianca Sanzaro will be keen to turn their fortunes around after two losses on the trot. The Lions had a terrible start against Cranbourne in round five, trailing 17-4 at quarter time, but showed enough after the first break to suggest they won’t be an easy conquest. Bec Langford, Cath McCowan, Caitlin Cooke and Emma Jones will all need to be at the top of their games for the Lions to be a chance. The Eagles should bounce back to the winners list with a comfortable 15-goal victory.

ROC star Mel Overdyk will be a key player against Doveton.

Cranbourne

A big thank you to Narre Warren for hosting Pink Ribbon Round, there was obviously a lot of work and baking done for the occasion. U13 Red/White - Our baby doves struggled to plan in front against NW, this caused many turnovers. We couldn’t find a clear path down the court to capitalise on some good efforts in defence. Back to our game plan this week with lots of defensive drills at training. U15 Red - Finally we showed up to play – played hard but fair, won every quarter and started of strong, which is what we have concentrating on. U15 White - We struggled with our game plan against NW and seemed to give up too easily against a determined NW team. We need to string 4 quarters together and back each other up all the way down the court. U 17 Red - A win! Narre Warren 26 def by Doveton 30 U17 White - A tough game and played strong but just dropped our heads in the second quarter and that is all it takes to lose a game. Back to basics this week and a good training session will see these girls back on track. D Grade - Coming up against NW was always going to be tough – grand final rematch and the girls were a tad nervous. Defence end started strong and kept the flow of the game going for the whole 4 quarters. We kept the lead for the entire game to win by 14 goals on what was a great team effort. Keep working hard girls and the rewards will keep coming! C Grade - We showed courage to come from behind; we were down the entire game and ended up with a draw. Made things tough for ourselves from the start, however showed good character to never give up! B Grade - It was a deserved win for NW. We didn’t play to our potential at all and it showed from the warm up. NW are a strong side, however we are better than the performance on the day. Just have to take it on the chin, move on and be more prepared for next match. A Grade - Well, Well, Well….. Our pre-game warm up unsatisfactory/unfocused and gave the other team another 5 goal head start. Our attitude on court led by DD, our efforts and will to compete was fantastic but once again ran out of steam going down in the last minutes of the game. Commitment required – we definitely have the talent and it is there for taking!

Round 5 saw a day of fantastic results for Cranbourne at home against Pakenham with our club coming away with 8 out of 10 wins for the day. Unfortunately our Under 13’s lost to two very strong Pakenham teams with the Reds going down 33 to 19, BOC: Lelani and the Whites losing 11 to 4, BOC: Sina. It was all upwards though after that with both Under 15 teams winning convincingly with the Reds bringing home a 50 to 18 win, BOC: Uaina, and the Whites winning 33 to 9, BOC: Chelsea & Jade. Our 17’s continued the winning streak, although a little closer in the results with the Reds victorious 30 to 22, BOC: Tahlia and the Whites 23 to 18 winners, BOC: Brooke, with a special mention to Alisha Oskan for improved goaling confidence. Our D Grade won 24 to 14, BOC: Stephanie & Samantha, C Grade winning 35 to 21, BOC: Melissa & Jenna and B Grade in a confidence boosting win 48 to 33, BOC: Aimee & Maddie . A Grade finished off a great day with a 16 goal win at 52 to 36, BOC: Tahlia & Tara. As well as our winning form on the netball courts, our Pink Day fundraising efforts were a huge success raising just over $600 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia! Well Done and thank you to everyone that donated items for our hamper raffles, provided baked goodies for our cake stall and supported the day by buying raffle tickets and the yummy items on offer at the cake stall. A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the day a success, there is such a lot of organising, time and effort behind the scenes that goes into days like this. Thank you to Bec St Mart & Claire Pollock for their efforts in putting it all together, and all their little helpers on the day who sold tickets and helped with the cake stall. Congratulations to the winners of the hamper raffles: Ellen Graham, Bec St Mart, Jane, John Hetherington, Jenna Bliss, Donna Wilson & Tara. The KitchenAid/Chef’s Toolbox Club Fundraiser Raffle was also drawn on Thursday 17th May and the winners were: 1st Prize: Fiona Coates, 2nd Prize: Lee-Anne Hetherington, 3rd Prize: Chelsea Morris and 4th Prize: Lea-Anne Robertson. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets in this raffle to support our Club. The Club would also like to congratulate Tahlia Coates and Yasmin Dickson who were selected to represent SEFNL in the Under 17 netball Interleague team that played last Saturday against Yarra Ranges. The SEFNL team had a great win, and from all accounts our girls played outstanding, well done again Tahlia & Yasmin! Just a reminder if any Junior netball players are interested in playing Wednesday nights at the Casey Stadium with Cranbourne Football Netball Club we are putting together teams for the upcoming Spring Season. Registration Forms can be obtained from the Club Facebook page or see John or Lee-Anne Hetherington or Sara Wright for a form or for further information. Good luck to all teams today for our Round 6 matches as we take on Berwick at Casey Fields. Go Eagles!

Netball Notes Tooradin-Dalmore

Firstly, we’d like to congratulate our super star players Sara Duncan, Alex Duff and Ebony Dolan for representing the league and TDNC as part of the SEFNL interleague squad on Saturday. All three players had ripper games across the court, and while the team didn’t quite get the win against Yarra Ranges, we were all very proud of their efforts. TDNC has come a long way over the past few years and to have three representatives from the club in the interleague team is testament to that. Particularly Ebony and Alex who’ve been around the club for quite a while and continue to improve out of sight each year, and showed they deserved a spot in Saturday’s side! Last round, the Gulls headed to Berwick in what was a successful day out particularly for our senior sides. A-Grade continued their winning streak with another strong win over the Wickers, with the team remaining undefeated for the season so far. B, C and D-Grades also got back on the winners list after an unsuccessful previous round, with some great team efforts across the court. Special mention goes to Shona Wells who filled a position in goals after a long hiatus from the goal circle, while B-Grade’s usual shooters Dayle Willis and Emma Haynes were out injured. As expected, Shona played awesome and proved what a dynamic player she is. Our young Gulls are still battling hard each week against strong competition, despite yet getting a win on the board. Well done to Sasha Williams who had a great game and earned BOC in the 15s Red team, before also stepping up and taking the court for the 17s Red team as well. The junior teams continue to stay positive week in, week out and are bonding well as teams. We’re confident some success will come their way shortly! This week we head to Narre Warren in what is sure to be a tough day out across the board and we’re looking forward to some great games of netball. This Saturday night is our Rubik’s Cube Party at the Tooradin Sports Club from 7pm and we’d love to see as many players and supporters their as possible, decked out in their colourful get ups. Our Annual Formal Night is also coming up on 7 July so put the date in your diary, with tickets to go on sale in the next couple of weeks. GO SEAGULLS!!

ROC

Thanks to the Beaconsfield Netball club for making us feel very welcome, as they always do, on Saturday. It was fantastic to see the great lengths they went to for pink day. On court the games were hard fought out in the icy breeze, the club rivalry ever present. Due to some player unavailability we had a number of girls come up and play their first games this week. Congrats to Maddi Chamberlain and Ellie Keen who both slotted in brilliantly as they made their A Grade debuts and Jess Postregna who starred in her senior debut in the B Grade match. Beaconsfield B GRADE - Another tough hit out for Beacy B Grade. Celebrating Pink Round the girls took on a very steady and talented ROC team. Getting the early jump the team stretched out to a 7 goal lead, but the Roos came back within striking range by the close of the opening quarter. Costly errors were the downfall as Beacy were unable to keep pace with ROC. Beacy going down by 5 in the end. Awards - Mia Palmer, Gabby Stinear and Caity Budge C GRADE - Congrats ladies on another great win, each week our game keeps going from strength to strength. Our mid court combination of Poss McKenna, Paris Houeix and Hannah Blair is really starting to jell nicely, providing sharp transitions from defence into the goal circle. Vicki Hitchcock and Bec Allen again dominated with the

Netball Notes rebounds, and our goalers sharp shooting in the windy conditions helped us come away with the convincing win. Award winners: Paris Houeix, Dan Gale and Hannah Blair D GRADE - This week we played ROC and despite the difference in ladder position it was a very even first half, with our girls seemingly just going through the motions. We played our game and roles well, linking the ball up the court and feeding our goalers effortlessly and as always, our defence putting in 100% to win numerous turnovers. We lacked in intensity this week, but still came away with the win. A big thankyou goes out to David, Lisa and Taylah Entwistle for their beautiful words and insight into why this round (Cancer Awareness ) is so important to their family, and many other families that are affected by cancer. Awards this week went to Maddie Kellett, Taylah Entwistle and Sam O’Dea. Enjoy your week break. U15 RED - The 15 Reds first quarter of netball displayed what the team is made of - great timing and decision making, as well as tight defence, causing pressure on the ROC opposition. The quarter break seeing Beacy with a two goal lead. However, Beacy’s intensity could not be maintained and it was ROC’s pressure which created Beacy’s passing errors and turnovers, seeing ROC with a 7 goal lead at half time. The final difference equating to a 15 goal difference. The Beacy girls showed in the early stages of the game they have what it takes to be competitive and need to maintain those qualities on a weekly basis, and the next time we encounter ROC. Award winners: Subway - Jemima Sheedy, Beacy Charcoal Chicken - Millie Utber and Ducky in the Field Cafe - Tahlia Lane U13 RED - 13 Reds had a messy start to the game this week. Our defensive pressure was great resulting in plenty of turnovers. Unfortunately at times we failed to capitalise on our turnovers by making basic mistakes. After a few positional changes we were able to settle in and make some good connections down the court. We worked hard for the whole game, our shooters were great today, as was our defensive pressure. In the end coming away with a good win. Awards: Paige Brooks-Macmillan, Eliza Mettes & Ella Wilson U13 WHITE - We had a tough game against ROC this week coming away with a draw. The girls started off slow but managed to lift their intensity in the second half and cause an 8 goal turn around. Our mid court in Ella Crawford, Ebony Davine and Millie Justice controlled the ball down the court, and Tahnee Ziesler in WD caused many turn overs with her defensive pressure. Awards: Ducky in the Field Cafe: Ella Crawford, Subway: Tahnee Ziesler & Beacy Charcoal Chicken: Sienna Cook

A mixed bag for SEFNL The South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) can hold its head high after a competitive day of netball against AFL Yarra Ranges at Holm Park Reserve. The senior netballers showed great character to fight the game out against a strong opponent, losing 48-43, while the day started brightly for SEFNL with the 17-unders winning 30-21. The senior game drifted away from SEFNL in the first quarter, where despite the efforts of Caitlin Cooke (GD) and Ebony Dolan (GK) in defence, and the hard work of Kaela Hughes (WD), Sara Duncan (C) and Britt Mashado (WA) through the midcourt, the visitors kicked out to a 13-8 lead. SEFNL squared away the remainder of the match, 35-each, but that first quarter told the story in the end. Mikaela Dakic, Alex Duff, Emma Jones, Bianca Sanzaro and Lauren Spinks all did SEFNL proud. Sinead Lumsden top-scored for AFLYR with 22 goals, while Krista Tomlinson played a terrific role through the midcourt. Matt Cooke and his girls had better luck in the junior game where SEFNL exploded out of the blocks to take a firm grip on proceedings at quarter time. Through the great efforts of Lesila Seeto, Charlotte Petelinek, Abby Williams, Kacey Maund, Tahlia Coates, Mia Washington and Mel Webster, the home side had control of the contest with a 13-4 lead at the first break. AFL Yarra Ranges fought the game out well but Yasmin Dickson, Emily Kerr and Teneille Morrell made sure there were no nasty surprises in the second half.

44

The SEFNL 17-under team celebrate its big win over AFL Yarra Ranges.

Doveton’s Lesila Seeto played a fine game for the SEFNL juniors.

YOUNG TALENT GALORE ON THE PENINSULA The quality of young football talent on the Mornington Peninsula has been highlighted with 11 players from MPNFL clubs being selected in the Vic Country Squad for the 2018 AFL NAB Championships. A staggering 12 players from the Dandenong Stingrays have been selected in the 38-man squad, with Beaconsfield’s Mitchell Riordan joining a long list of MPNFL players on the verge of final selection. Round One of the AFL NAB Championships takes place on Saturday June 9 when Vic Country take on the Allies at Spotless Stadium in Sydney at 1.10pm. Vic Country will have its final practice game this Sunday when they play the Allies at IKON Park Carlton at 10.00am. DANDENONG STINGRAYS PLAYERS SELECTED Mitchell Riordan (Beaconsfield), Riley Bowman (Crib Point), William Hamill (Dromana), Zac Foot (Langwarrin), Jake Frawley (Pearcedale), Bailey Williams (Pines), Sam Fletcher and Jai Taylor (Red Hill), Toby Bedford and Jai Nanscawen (Rosebud), Bailey Schmidt (Seaford) and Hayden Young (Somerville). STINGRAYS OVER POWER THE RANGERS The Dandenong Southern Stingrays have survived a gallant effort from the Murray Bushrangers, kicking six lastquarter goals to score a 22-point victory at Rams Arena last Saturday. The Stingrays lead all day, but due poor kicking at goal left the Bushrangers in the game, before a three-goal effort in the last quarter from Corey Ellison saw the final scores, 16.13 (109) to 14.3 (87). Both teams were keen to get physical early, with a big showing of AFL recruiters on hand to watch the top two teams in the competition. Stingrays coach Craig Black was pleased with the end result. “We knew that Murray were going to challenge us and try to deny our style of play, but luckily we adjusted to the tempo of the game and we were good enough to hold on,” Black said. Black had a lot of praise to dish out for his men – particularly noteworthy were defender Jai Taylor, collecting numerous disposals and rebounds, whilst key defenders Angus Paterson and Sam DeKoning stood tall in the face of an attacking Bushrangers forward line. Zac Foot gave one of his best performances through the middle, never relenting in his hard-bodied attack on the footy, and ball magnets Campbell Hustwaite and Sam Fletcher again shone brightly. Dandenong started well, kicking the first goal of the game, before it was quickly matched by Murray in what would develop into a clear theme of the day. Both sides created their opportunities from clean centre clearances and dominant forward lines.

46

The first quarter was a great wrestle, with the Stingrays holding a three-point lead at the first break. Murray came out of the box kicking the first goal but, never a team to lay down though, the Stingrays took their game up a notch and suddenly it was the Bushrangers’ on the back foot. The Stingrays slotted majors in quick succession through Jamie Plumridge, Corey Ellison and Bailey Williams and were gaining some momentum by really driving through the centre corridor. But too many shots went wayward, allowing Murray to rebound by kicking a couple of their own. The Stingrays once again took control kicking the last two goals, going in to the big break leading by 22 points, 7.10.52 to 5.0.30. The Bushrangers reduced the margin to 16 at three-quarter time before the Stingrays put the foot to the floor. The Stingrays played on at every opportunity, taking plenty of risks and reaping the rewards, slamming on six last-quarter goals. With another scalp under their belt the Stingrays now hold top spot on the TAC Cup ladder, leading into this week’s TAC Cup bye. The Stingrays will return to Shepley Oval on Sunday 3 June at 10.45am taking on the Sandringham Dragons, which will be followed by another TAC Cup game in Gippsland Power versus Geelong Falcons at 2.15pm.
