AFL South East A proven pathway to higher honours The most promising young talent in local football will be on full display at the AFL South East 2018 Regional Junior Championships. Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues will converge on Beaconsfield, Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for the championships which run from June 6 to 11. The championships consist of under 13 to 17s for boys and under 15 and 18s for girls. The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA). AFLSE RGM John Anderson said the carnival had quickly developed a strong reputation for identifying the next wave of talent emerging through the junior system. “The Regional Junior Championships have become a very important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as selection on AFL and AFLW lists, “ Anderson said. “The carnival atmosphere and high level of competition provide the perfect platform for our stars going forward.” This year’s carnival is proudly supported by SEDA College, where Year 11 and 12 students complete their senior secondary education immersed in the sport industry.

The 2018 championships will also digital, with this year’s Junior Carnival Record being accessed through the following link: http://www.aflsejuniorchampionships.com.au/

AFL Vic Country Sir Doug Nicholls Round AFL Victoria will celebrate the contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have made to Australian Football this week in the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round on May 27-June 3. This is the twelfth year the AFL has celebrated the Indigenous community through the vehicle of sport and the third time the Round has been celebrated since being renamed after Sir Doug Nicholls. Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation, was the first Indigenous football player to represent Victoria at a state level.

Sherrin is also proud to play an integral role in the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, with specially-designed footballs by former Essendon and Port Adelaide star Gavin Wanganeen to be used in the AFL this weekend. The design includes 18 circles of Indigenous significance which representing the 18 clubs in the competition, all of which have players with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. For more information on AFL Victoria Indigenous Programs, please visit www.aflvic.com.au/indigenous/

Chalking up 54 games for Fitzroy, he was a brilliant allround athlete who devoted his time to supporting the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. His work off the football field was also noteworthy, with Sir Doug awarded with the MBE (1957) and the OBE (1968) before being knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1972 and holding the position of Governor of South Australia. In season 2018, the Toyota AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round will hold a special significance, celebrating 25 years since St Kilda’s Nicky Winmar lifted his jumper up and pointed to his skin, proclaiming ‘I’m black and I’m proud of it’. The Round will also see all AFL umpires join the 18 AFL Clubs and wear an Indigenous jumper for the first time. AFL Victoria continues to support the next generation of future Indigenous footballers with a number of Indigenous programs available across the state, including Laguntas, KickStart, Female Kickstart, Koorie NAB Auskick and the newly created female Boorimul Program. Victorian leagues and individual community football clubs across the state are well underway with planning their own celebrations and we encourage all to maximise the opportunities presented by this round, not just on game day but in the lead up to the round via local media and other platforms

Sherrin has released a ball specially designed by Gavin Wanganeen for this week’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Footy Preview Are the Magpies soaring to new heights? By David Nagel Narre Warren spread-eagling the competition – it’s something none of us saw coming but could become quite the reality if the Magpies can roll Berwick at Kalora Park this afternoon. Who would have thought – walking off Holm Park Reserve after a 57-point defeat at the hands of the Wickers in last year’s grand final – that the Magpies would be two games clear of the competition after just six rounds of footy? None of us, that’s who! Not Matt Shinners, the returning and dual-premiership winning Magpies’ coach of 2008 and ’10, and certainly not Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman who finished his first season at the helm with a remarkable 18-0 record. The transformation has been startling and brought a real buzz to the competition with Berwick expected to continue its dominance in 2018. The Magpies’ resurgence has been great for football! The Magpies are quicker and sharper than last year, or at least that’s the way it appears with brilliant ball movement having the opposition chasing tail more often than not. Players like Dylan Quirk, Michael Collins, Trent Shinners, Col McNamara and Hayden Stagg aren’t overly blessed with leg speed, but the mental cogs tick over a lot quicker than the average suburban footballer.

Narre Warren star Nick Scanlon will be an ever-present threat for Berwick. Quick decision making and quality ball use, it’s been the hallmark of the Magpies magnificent start to the season. They also have some terrific young talent to work with, with Tom Miller and Cory Machaya using completely different assets to impress. Miller is calm and composed in the heat of battle, while Machaya’s ability to turn on the jets has provided a major improvement in the Magpies’ makeup this year. Berwick, well it will be dead-set spewing after last week’s loss to Cranbourne. No-one could blame the Wickers for becoming a little complacent mid-way through the third quarter. A goal to Tim Gunn kicked the lead out to 28 points before a trademark bomb from Ash Smith at the 14-minute mark saw the margin extend to a game-high 36 points. Game over! But the Eagles chipped away, kicking a couple of late ones in the third term before exposing the Wickers in the last quarter with an 8.6 to 0.2 explosion that caught everyone off guard. If the round-two loss to Narre Warren was a wake-up call… well then what was this! This was not the Berwick we have become to accustomed to, the team with a shiny exterior that camouflages an engine room full of guts and determination. They’re not out of this premiership race by any means, but maybe the loss of hard-cookies like Michael Harold and James Magner is being felt a little more than first imagined. Harold didn’t get a lot of the ball, but made his teammates walk tall and his opponents stare sideways, while Magner was also elite and tough around the stoppages. The Wickers conceded 11 goals straight last week, including seven in 12 minutes either side of three-quarter time. The big question now is – can they bounce back?

Footy Preview Slipping three games behind the Magpies may not be terminal, but it will give us a pretty clear indication that we have a clear and decisive front-runner for this year’s title. A fascinating contest is assured – and it’s the Magpies to kick clear at the top of the ladder with a 23-point victory. Cranbourne coach Steve O’Brien allowed his team to celebrate a memorable victory last week, but soon switched the attention to this week’s trip to Starling Road to take on Officer. “We enjoyed the aftermath because it was a very special victory, but it means nothing if we don’t back it up this week with another strong performance,” O’Brien said. The Eagles produced the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde performance. Bordering on deplorable for two-and-a-half quarters, the home side set Casey Fields alight with 11 unanswered goals from the 18-minute mark of the third term against last year’s premiers. It was vintage Cranbourne. Ryan Jones and Jarryd Barker were brilliant through the midfield, ‘Fluff’ Boland terrific in the ruck, while Shaun Marusic sacrificed his own ball-winning ability to snuff out the influence of Travis Tuck. It was a fantastic team performance from the Eagles – who now have a benchmark to live up to. Officer simply did what it had to do against Doveton, take the four points and move on after consecutive shellacking’s at the hands of Narre Warren and Beaconsfield. James Waldon has been in terrific form down back while 300-gamer Ben Tivendale continues to put his anti-aging products to good use.

Sam Muirhead and the Doves will need to stay resilient against Beaconsfield.

8

Beaconsfield’s Jake Bowd is one of the most exciting defenders in the business. The Kangaroos need to put a stake in the ground at some point this season and this could be the perfect opportunity against a team that had one goal on the board after twoand-a-half quarters of footy last week. On the flip side, the Eagles are dangerous, so only a full four-quarter performance will see the Kangaroos push the perennial powerhouse. The Eagles have too many weapons – they’ll win comfortably in the end by 32 points. Toomuc Reserve is the venue for what should be an entertaining and tight contest between two teams that really need a win – Pakenham and Tooradin. The Lions, despite being competitive, haven’t saluted since rolling Doveton in round two while the Seagulls have to go even further back – to round one - when the defeated the Lions at this very venue. The Lions have a chance to really start building their season, with this game against the Seagulls followed by games against Narre Warren, Doveton, and the Seagulls once again. The Narre game will be tough, but if the Lions can get on a roll they could start applying some serious pressure to Officer in fifth position. Steve Morey is one of the premium defenders in the competition – and has long been under-rated – while Jimmy Harrison provides the class and Jake Barclay and Steve O’Bryan some real grunt through the engine room. Liam Tyrrell has a unique blend of height and pace, while Jackson Berry and Jafar Ocaa are two emerging youngsters that the Lions can build a team around. Tooradin stuck with Narre Warren in the opening exchanges last week before class took a hold and the Magpies ran away with things. But Lachie Gillespie would have been rapt the effort of his boys, who never gave up on a contest all day.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Matt Livermore led from the front while Jordy Kelly, Luke McKenna and Paddy Chin showed enough to suggest they’ll be a handful for the Lions to cope with. This one is almost impossible to predict. But if the Lions can match it with the Seagulls early and not concede a huge start as they did in round one – they should ride a raucous home crowd to a 10-point victory. And Beaconsfield’s push for a double chance should continue to gain momentum when the Eagles head to Robinson Reserve to take on Doveton. Leigh McQuillen and his boys have really cashed in on the softest part of their draw, boosting their percentage with some comprehensive victories over Tooradin, Officer and Pakenham. Nathan Langley has been sensational in front of goals while Taylor Joyce enjoyed the switch back to his former club last week after gaining a clearance from the Doves. Jake Bowd is developing into one of the premium defenders in the business while ruckman Scotty Meyer to continues to amaze with silky skills at ground level. The Doves will take some encouragement from last week’s 23-point loss to Officer, with Matt Stapleton, Russ Gabriel and Matt Jameson showing the younger members of the team how to play footy. The contest between Meyer and Gabriel are also intriguing and will once again go along way to deciding the output from both midfields. The Doves won’t give up - they never do – but the Eagles will win, running away in the last quarter to a 43-point victory.

Footy Notes Beaconsfield Last week we managed to get the job done over a tough and spirited Pakenham. The under 19’s kicked into gear early for Youngy and just persisted all game with their plan. The speed and execution of the ball movement is starting to become a trade mark for theses guys and its great to watch when they are in full flight. There were some great stand out performances however their team work was fantastic allowing them to come home with a strong win The reserves needed to back up their good form of the past 2 weeks and they needed to be committed to the task ahead as Pakenham was not going to be an easy game. To the credit of the boys they fought out hard coming home with an excellent victory making it 3 straight pushing them into the top 5 The senior guys again kicked off with a slow start allowing Pakenham to hold a first break lead through frustrating mistakes and poor turn overs. Macca revved the boys at the first break and they kicked 4 quick unanswered goals taking a small lead into the big break . The second half the guys then started to get it together with some great passages of play. Then end resulted in a good win for the boys also making it 3 straight. The senior women’s who played their second home game of the season had a big task ahead for the day facing off against last years divisions 1 premiers, it was never going to be easy but they fought to the end loosing but holding their heads high This week we head to Doveton where we have no 19s playing however the reserves and seniors will be in for a tough day. Doveton have always been strong and we have had great clashes over the past few years with them this will be no different today. Narre Warren

Today we host Berwick in the ‘reversed home game’ that was due to the unavailability of our ground in Round 2. Narre’s Ones remain undefeated after 6 rounds, while reigning Premiers, Berwick suffered their second defeat for the season last week – so today’s game it set to be a cracker! Last week Narre hosted Tooradin who presented us with a characteristic tough physical game of senior footy. You don’t get a senior game down by Western Port unless

you’re hard at the contest and prepared to put your head over the footy. After a fairly even first term when Tooradin controlled play for significant periods, Narre again unleashed with a six-goal to one-goal second quarter to open the game up in our favour. Our back six were fantastic repelling countless Tooradin attacks. Richo, perhaps the most mobile centre half-back in the comp, stepped up again with Col Mac, Ryan Quirk and Nathan Foote in the back half; while Nick Scanlon constantly pushed well up the field in support then worked back down forward for four majors in a best-onground performance. Well done to young 17 year old Matt Butera, another young debutant given a look at senior level by Narre in 2018, with an eye to the future. Narre’s Twos had a big win on the back of great games by the Dempster twins – Mitch and Rhys. Rhys kicked five and is proving a good target up forward while Mitch figured in our best with Hayden Johnston, Tommy Toner, Borno and Dean Scanlon. At times Narre’s ball movement, particularly in our 8-goal third quarter was befitting of a senior side in this comp, while our X-factor – new recruit, big Ryan Marriott is just hitting his straps – clunking big contested marks in the front half and building scoreboard pressure with his long boot. Young mobile tall Paddy Andrews just gets better with every game and also looks a senior player in the making. A big shout out for Chris ‘Disco’ Collins who played his 200th club game last Saturday. Disco’s battered body now sees him playing a key leadership role in top-of-the-ladder Twos, but his 200 club games comprise a record that most senior footballers in any competition would envy and aspire to, including four senior flags. While he’s lived and played in the shadow of his older brother and great mate Michael, ‘Disco’ is a champion of Narre Warren FNC in his own right - the type of bloke that makes footy clubs great places to hang out. Disco – we raise our glasses to you on this great milestone. Narre’s Under 19s had a big win over an undermanned Tooradin, after opening with an 8-goal first quarter. Max Sheppard and Jack Flannery were too big and too strong for Tooradin’s defence with 7 goals apiece, and Sharpie chipped in for 4 of his own in a now-typical forward roving role. Dylan Mutimer and Fabian Stellato were also key players in our win. One of our first major social functions in our new social club at Fox Road will be our annual NWFNC Berwick Mazda Corporate Lunch. Entertainment this year will feature former AFL champion and media personality Matthew Lloyd; local Australian cricket hero James Pattinson and comedian Chris Bennett. $120 per person includes 3 course meal with beer, wine and soft drinks; memorabilia auctions and raffles. It’s on Friday 6 July, - 12.00 midday to 4.30 pm. Always a sell-out. Contact Dash on 0410 593280 or Stuey Stephenson on 0419820024 for bookings. Footy Notes Pakenham Reserves - For Round 6 Pakenham travelled to Beaconsfield, a win would see us jump to 4th on the ladder. With 5 players out from last week’s team, we knew it was going to be tough. We ended up losing the game by 5 goals but I was extremely proud of all the players. We never gave in and made Beaconsfield earn every kick. The players are starting to play like a team and a win is not far away. Seniors - After a terrific start leading on the scoreboard at the end of the 1st quarter, unfortunately we were not able to sustain it for the rest of the game and went down by 46 points. It was great to see young gun Jafar Ocaa playing his best game for the club in only his 6th senior game and he was ably assisted by Mozz, Harro, Tick & OB. While the loyal Lions supporters would have been happy with the players endeavour & commitment, when the players click and play consistent 4 quarter football, then the reward will be more wins. Good luck to all football & netball teams this weekend. The Club would like to invite all Life Members and financial members to a special general meeting on Wednesday, 5th June – upstairs at the clubrooms – 7pm. This meeting is to decide the future of the Club so please attend to ensure your vote is counted in this important issue. Also, the tickets for our annual $10,000 draw have been distributed and are available for purchase from the players, or the Club. Grab you favourite player and buy a ticket for a great night and a chance to go into the draw. This weekend is our White Night Glow Party. Kicking off at 7pm at the social rooms. $20 gets you entry and a UV t-shirt, games and DJ Blake Millier from 10:30pm. Come along for a great night! Go Pakky!

by 19 points. Our boys were good; just not good enough although the signs are there that we are on the right track. Best for us were Mitch Tharle, Kyle Nunn, Jake Cowburn, Cooper Reilly, Buttsy and Haz. The Ressies were next kicking the day off on Oval 1 on a beautiful afternoon. We took a while to get in to the game and depth of quality Berwick have means if you don’t jump out of the blocks, you are always going to be playing catch up footy. And that we did. Five goals down at the half, while we got better we couldn’t bridge that gap and eventually lost by 42 points. Best for us were Bailey, Keeno, Jakey, Koey, Struth and N Russo. To the main game and we started as we did against Narre on the VFL ground, converting poorly to the point we had kicked just 1.9 for the first half. It was the lowest score we have seen for a while for our senior boys but luckily, we were still only 22 points adrift at the main break. What was to come in the second half not even the most ardent Eagles fan would have believed. With only two goals on the board up until time on of the 3rd quarter, we went out to a 32-point deficit until we added two late ones to trail by 20 points at the last break which gave the faithful hope that maybe we had a sniff. The next eight minutes of footy were simply unbelievable; hard to describe within the space we have here. Six goals to nothing to us turned the game on its head in a patch of footy that will long be unmatched at our club, particularly against the quality opposition we were up against. We added two more for the game, keeping Berwick goalless in the last to run out 32-point winners which had the rooms packed and belting out the song as loud as we’ve heard. A 64-point turnaround against the leagues benchmark was, well, simply unbelievable. Best for us were Jonesy, Dill, Barks, Junk Time, Micky B and Whoppa. Let’s head back to Trios after the day at Officer and hopefully celebrate three big wins!! All welcome.

Cranbourne What a day at Casey Fields we had last week hosting Berwick. While all results didn’t go our way, the finish to the day was something to behold. But let’s start with the Under 19s. The boys got off to a slow start conceding one goal to four in the first although we did have our chances to stay a little closer in touch. Our second quarter was a lot better as we outscored the opposition three to one to be within a kick at half time. The third quarter saw us really adding pressure but we just couldn’t convert where it mattered, kicking 1.4. Straight kicking would have given us a ¾ time lead and plenty of momentum. Unfortunately, Berwick steadied better than us and came away to win

Footy Notes Berwick Last week we were lucky enough to play on Casey Fields and on a deck that looked magnificent albeit somewhay soft under foot. I wish I could get my lawn at home looking as good. The 19s started the day on oval 2 and coming up against a bigger bodied Cranni team showed plenty of courage to record a super win. They were challenged all day but stuck to their structures and got the just rewards. The reserves were the first game on the main oval and palyed great football to come away with the win. Havining said that Cranbourne would not go away and it was hard fought to the end. The seniors game was one of 70 Minutes V 30 Minutes. We dominated for the first 70 minutes for our 7 goals. Cranbourne then dominated the next 30 minutes for their 12 goals. An amazing turn around and not one I have seen before. Now that was last week and today is this week. No use dwelling on the past, jsut learn from it and get on with life. The boys have trained well this week and we expect a bold showing against Narre. As we know Narre Warren are building new rooms and to date have been running with no social rooms. They do have an undercover area and outdoor heaters so please support them and stick around for a couple of froths after the game.

Doveton Another tough challenge today against Beaconsfield who have been in pretty good form of late winning their last three games. The senior boys put up a much-better showing against Officer last week, with a strong first quarter and second half being the highlights of the day. We just dropped out level a bit in the second quarter and were made to pay by a pretty slick Officer outfit. Matty Stapleton played a cracking game and snagged a couple along the way while Jamo, Big Rus and young Mitch Cotter gave the Kangaroos a run for their many for long parts of the match. Just a reminder to our supporters that next week we take on Cranbourne at Cranbourne in the only SEFNL game played on over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Let’s jump in the cars and give the boys all the support they need as they take on one of our biggest rivals from over the years.

Tooradin-Dalmore The trip to Narre Warren started pretty well last week but we were eventually out-gunned by a very slick Magpies machine that are looking the goods this year. We were totally outplayed in the second quarter but stuck to our guns and can take some confidence into today’s game against Pakenham.

16

Matty Livermore, Jordy Kelly and Nick Schumann played really good games against quality opposition and will be looking for big games again against the Lions. Just a reminder to everyone at the club that we have big function lined up for Saturday June 23, with former Melbourne star David Schwarz the key-note speaker. That home game against Officer is also our Past-Players and Sponsors Day so we’re expecting a pretty big turn up. A decision on where we play next year is fast approaching – but in preparation maybe get out the old Melways and focus in on the West Gippsland region of Victoria!

Officer Last weekend was our first win on the road for the 2018 season against a very impressive Doveton side that pushed us at every turn. It was a hard fort win and one which puts us in the unusual position of being 4-2 after the first 6 games. This week presents a new opportunity to face the inform Cranbourne who themselves have come off and excellent win and it is a challenge we are eager to face. This week the club also made a number of decisions about its future. After years of discussion and debate about the future of the club and the league the Officer Senior Football Club Committee met and officially endorsed a move to the AFL Yarra Ranger/Greater East competition. The decision has also been formalized with a request being sent to begin this process. Whilst this is not a decision the club has taken lightly, it is one that we believe is in the best interests in the future of our football club. Finally, there are a number of important dates on the calendar which we would like to bring to the attention of our members and supporters Saturday 23 June - College Night Social Function Saturday June 30th - Beaconsfield Bank Community Day - Past Players 30 year Premiership Reunion Saturday July 7th - Empire Night Saturday July 14th - VIP and life members luncheon Saturday July 21st - 10k Reverse Draw Good luck to all our team this weekend. A UNITED TOORADIN-DALMORE FUELLING ITS COMMUNITY By David Nagel Tooradin-Dalmore Football Netball Club is the undisputed champion at filling up its tanks – and now it has filled up its pockets after collecting almost $1000 from United Petroleum as part of its Community Rewards Program. A supply partner of AFL South East, United Petroleum ran a year-long competition to find out who the champion club was at filling up its tanks in the region. The Seagulls prevailed over all other AFLSE clubs, earning a visit from United Petroleum Commercial Development Manager Benjamin Charles. “Congratulations to the Tooradin-Dalmore Football Netball Club and all of its participants and supporters for engaging in the program, not only benefitting themselves with a two-cent discount off every litre of petrol purchased, but benefiting the club in the long run,” Charles said. “The beauty of the program is that everyone can get involved and contribute, and it’s great to be able to give back to the club in recognition of its ongoing commitment to the program. “This sort of money can buy quite a few footballs and netballs like we’re holding here today.”

TDFNC took full advantage of its unique situation of having a United Petroleum station in the middle of town, racking up big dollars by having their members, supporters, players and sponsors simply filling up their cars for their daily commute. Football club president Greg Kelly said it was the easiest money his club had ever earned. “We did nothing special except go about our daily business and promote the program a little. It was that simple and one of the easiest fundraisers the club has ever been a part of,” Kelly said. “Thanks to the team at United Petroleum for their management of the program, the quick sign up and mailing of the cards directly made it so easy to be a part of.” It really is so simple to join the program, save dollars, and raise revenue for your designated club by taking the following steps: UNITED PETROLEUM COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM • Go on line to https://www.unitedpetroleum.com.au/ communityrewards/ • Registration takes 60 seconds which includes choosing your club of choice. • A card will be posted to your address within seven days. • Simply use the card for your purchase at any United Petroleum Station, cutting two cents per litre off your bill and contributing two cents per litre to your club of your choice.

Junior Representative teams do SEFNL proud By David Nagel The brightest young netball talent in SEFNL has been representing the league with distinction at Association Junior Tournaments held over the last two months. Tournaments held at the Mountain District, Casey, and Waverley Districts Netball Associations culminated over the last fortnight with the playing of the Association Championships. SEFNL had winning teams, grand finalists and semifinal participants at each tournament over four grades, with coaches Katrina Foster (13U), Roger Palmer (15U Reserve), Leanne Walford (15U Open) and Head Coach Janine Kilmartin (17U) giving the girls a great education along the way. “We didn’t want to over commit the players with training, they already have busy schedules, so we trained on four Friday nights for the four tournaments we played in,” Kilmartin said. “Considering we were playing against teams that train and play together on a weekly basis, I think it was an outstanding achievement to have a semi-finalist or grand finalist at every tournament we played in. “The girls are classy and smart players and it was really impressive how they came together as one to represent SEFNL with real pride.” Kilmartin said there were many highlights along the journey.

“To see the girls learn something new at training and then implement that on game day was probably the highlight,” she said. “That and seeing the smiles on their faces when they made it through to finals. To see them grow as players and believe in themselves, that was the highlight from a coaching point of view and made it all worthwhile in the end.” The head coach said the girls would take a lot away from the experience.

“It’s not always purely about the netball, it’s about building friendships and having a nice balance in your life,” Kilmartin said. “Some of these girls will remain friends for many years to come, going through Zone Academy’s and working up to the elite level together. The talent identification has begun for a lot of these girls and I wish them well as they work their way through this process.” Kilmartin wanted to thank a few people for the efforts. “Obviously the players, they were fantastic, but a special thank you goes to the coaches who dedicated their time and shared their knowledge with the girls and were always communicating before tournaments to make sure we were well represented,” Kilmartin said. “I’d also like to thank the parents and Sam Downie from SEFNL for organising things from a league point of view.” The representative teams will be recognised further at the SEFNL Presentation Night to be held on Monday 10 September.

Superstar and SEFNL share the same goals Supporters of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) will have extra reason to cheer on Melbourne Vixens goaler Mwai ‘MJ’ Kumwenda for the remainder of the Suncorp Super Netball season.

And it’s very simple how it works!

The Malawi international, who played a key role in her country’s upset victory over New Zealand at the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, has joined SEFNL and its major partner, the Berwick Motor Group, in a three-way partnership designed to give back to the local sporting community.

As an example, MJ scored 41 goals against the Collingwood Magpies in round one, so that equates to $410 worth of value, either off the purchase price, or worth of accessories, for a new-car purchase that week.

For every goal that MJ scores each week, Berwick Nissan, a member of the BMG Group, will provide $10 worth of value for every new-car purchase for the following week.

MJ has slotted 41, 34, 29, 47 and 38 goals so far this season, just getting her eye in for the remaining nine matches in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. AFL South East Commercial Manager Wes Garth is excited about the partnership’s potential. “MJ is quickly becoming one of the biggest names in netball, so for BMG, Berwick Nissan and SEFNL to be closely linked with her exploits is very exciting,” Garth said. “Hopefully MJ can continue her great form and everyone involved in clubs from the SEFNL competition can benefit with some great reductions off their new cars.” The Melbourne Vixens next game is against Sunshine Coast Lightning at 3pm this Saturday June 2. HOW TO CLAIM Simply head to Berwick Nissan, 6-10 Kangan Drive, Berwick, and mention your SEFNL club and MJ’s goaltotal for the week to grab a slice of this wonderful offer.

Netball Preview Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole By David Nagel The equation is rather simple – but the numbers don’t add up with five teams chasing four spots in this year’s South East Football Netball League finals series. Runaway leader Tooradin-Dalmore is the outstanding team in the competition, undefeated and two games clear of its nearest challenger after a comfortable victory over Narre Warren last week. At the opposite end of the table we have Pakenham and Berwick, highly competitive but not in a position to seriously challenge for a ticket to the big stage. But that core-middle group is fascinating, with Beaconsfield, Doveton, Narre Warren, ROC and Cranbourne all capable of giving each other some serious headaches on their day. But one of those teams will miss out on a chance to challenge the Seagulls when the top-five teams lock horns in late August. It’s a scenario that sums up the importance of those mid-table matches – and we have two this week with Doveton hosting Beaconsfield and ROC rolling out the red carpet for Cranbourne at Starling Road. The clash between the Doves and Eagles should be a beauty with the teams sitting second and third on the ladder. The Doves come into this clash with some solid form, after paying back ROC last week for their early-season loss in round one. Mikaela Dakic, Hayley Stewart and Zali Mifsud dominated the midcourt battles while Liz Edwards (GD) and Mel Webster (GK) kept the dangerous Kangaroos’ goalers at bay. And the Doves attacking weapons in Chelsea Imanisani, Emily Pupuke and Helen-Margaret Ashin showed great touch last week and will prove a handful for the Eagles this afternoon. Beacy stopped the rot against Pakenham last week, winning 64-27, after previous losses to Tooradin and ROC. Rylee Nelson controlled the midcourt for the Eagles while Dani Cameron, Abbie Sheers and skipper Kaela Hughes gave nothing away defensively. Both teams will be desperate to win this one and take a firm grip on that important second-place on the ladder. It’s the Eagles to win a close one. The game between ROC and Cranbourne also shapes as a beauty with both teams looking to give a real kickstart to their season.

Olivia Hamilton will be a key player for ROC against Cranbourne.

Cranbourne – last year’s defeated preliminary finalist – is starting to find its feet again after a disastrous start where it lost its first-four games. But wins over Pakenham and Berwick, although expected, have breathed new life into its finals dreams. Tegan Stahl and Tahlia Coates have found form at the attacking end of the court while multiple league best and fairest winner Tara Cecil is dictating terms in defence. Today’s opponent ROC has also had its moments this year. The key battle won was against Beaconsfield in round five, but the Kangaroos slipped up against Doveton last week in a game that would have seen them draw level in second place. Mel Overdyk is a great leader for the Kangaroos while Zoe Callanan and Olivia Hamilton gave everything against the Doves last week. This will also be a close game – and we’ll go for Cranbourne to get the win by two goals.

Netball Preview Narre Warren will look to begin to capitalise on a very important four weeks of netball when the Magpies host Berwick at Kalora Park. The Magpies – who learnt a lot from last week’s loss to Tooradin – play the Wickers, Pakenham, Cranbourne and Doveton over the next month…all winnable games that would set up a blockbuster rematch with the Seagulls in round 11. Erin Clark, Britt Mashado, Jemma Osborne and Kealeigh Brown now have a Seagull in their sights and will lift their tempo accordingly. Taylah Butterworth, Renee Gill, Brittany Pym and Jaime Cotter will give their all for the Wickers but the Magpies will be too strong. And Pakenham and Tooradin will meet for the second time this season at Toomuc Reserve. The Seagulls had to work hard for that opening win, eventually prevailing 53-44 in a game that was a lot closer than most would expect. Since then the Seagulls have been superb, with Jess Cox, Alex Maher, Alex Duff and Bec Kinna proving too hot to handle for all clubs in SEFNL. The Lions will battle hard, players like Kyra Esler, Lauren Spinks and Bec Langford always do – but the Seagulls will win comfortably.

Exciting youngster Mel Webster will have her hands full against Beaconsfield.

Netball Notes Tooradin-Dalmore

Pakenham

First up, we’d like to congratulate our young Gulls who were part of the SEFNL junior representative teams. Mairead and Bridget Holloway, Emilie Jones, Sasha Williams and Elly Agius competed in their respective 15s and 17s teams across four tournaments and had some great games and success along the way. The club is very proud of you all, and the future is looking bright for Tooradin with some talented, passionate young netballers coming through the ranks. On Saturday we headed to Narre Warren for what was a challenging day of netball across the board. Our A-Grade team remain undefeated for the season so far, with a solid win over Narre Warren on the weekend. There girls are playing some seriously great netball and it’s a joy as a club to watch them give it their all week in, week out and continue to strengthen as a team. Our D-Grade team also secured a good win over Narre Warren in what was a tight clash for the entirety of the game. Despite being challenged throughout the game, the girls kept their composure and came away with a two-goal win. With lots of new combinations compared to last year, it’s pleasing to see how well the D-Grade girls are gelling and playing as a team, and as a result enjoying the success that comes with that. Unfortunately, B and C-Grade were unable to secure wins on the weekend. C-Grade gave away their first quarter lead and had their opportunities to get it back, but unfortunately couldn’t quite capitalise when they needed to, however there were still plenty of positives to take away from the game. Our junior teams didn’t have any wins on the weekend, but there were still lots of scoring shots and some great passages of play as the girls continue to improve each week. The 15s Red had one of the closer games our junior teams have had for the season, and we’re confident they’re not far off getting a win on the board. This week we head to Pakenham for the second time this season, as they’re one of the teams we will come up against on three occasions this year. We took on Pakenham in our first round for the season, and we look forward to seeing how far the teams have hopefully improved and developed since then. Thanks to all those who came to the Rubik’s Cube Party on Saturday night which was a lot of fun. Our next function is our Annual Formal Night on Saturday 7 July – so put it in your diary now as it’s always our biggest social event of the year. GO SEAGULLS!!

In the official week of acknowledging the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers we would like to publically thank our amazing volunteers who are such an integral part of the Pakenham Lions netball family. They do it simply for the love of the sport, our club and the desire to lend a helping hand with a positive can do attitude for everyone. Your passion and tireless efforts and enthusiasm do not go unnoticed. Such a group of dedicated people we are so privileged to have in our club, you know who you are, and we thank you! Our heartfelt thanks are expressed and we acknowledge: • Our exceptional Coaches who are always planning, discussing and working as a united team to provide structured training sessions to ensure our players get the highest levels of training to assist them in being their best on game days. • Our Team Mangers who provide the much needed administration support to our coaches and ensure our players know what is happening at the club. • The PCs who so willingly help on game days for their teams. • The hard working committee team who always strive to do what is best for the club and never the individual and look at the big picture to make decisions for now and the club’s future. • Kenny for always being there to assist our players at training and game day from start to finish • Our supportive parents who always lend a helping hand when needed and provide that friendly acknowledgement to those working hard for the club in the way of a thank you, or provide constructive feedback in helping the committee and or coaches make it even better • To Penny and Chloe for taking all those amazing photos that become memories for our club, players and their families • To our club, team & game day award sponsors for providing that financial support for our club and its players • To those that so willingly come up and help on meal nights and help with set up and pack up for home games • To our committee, coaches and team managers involved in our successful stadium program, building the club’s future with our junior player program We are so very fortunate at Pakenham to have so many amazing willing people that make up our club, all working together, united and in a positive framework and outlook for the betterment of our club and every single player that calls Pakenham home. Every player is valued and respected with our ethos, Oneclub, Oneteam. Current research shows that volunteers live happier and healthier lives by their interaction and involvement in making a positive difference!

Cranbourne After a freezing and foggy morning, the fog finally lifted and the sun shone for what turned out to be a beautiful Autumn day at Casey Fields for Round 6 against Berwick. Our Under 13’s unfortunately lost both their matches, the Whites were close to what would have been a great win, losing a hard fought match by only a goal, final result 15 to 16 with the awards going to Mackenzie, Sina & Sharuka. The team should be proud of their efforts and take a lot of confidence from the way they played. The Reds lost out to a very strong, determined Berwick team 39 to 17 with the awards going to Marissa and Izzy. Our 15’s also faced tough opposition with the Whites losing 31 to 22, best wishes to Jade for a speedy recovery from injury. The Reds just missed out on the win by 7 goals, 39 to 32 with the Awards going to Chloe and Uaina. As the morning went on, things started to go Cranbourne’s way with the 17’s both gaining great wins. The Whites winning 35 to 30, awards to Nikita & Maddy.

36

The Reds were facing a tough match, with Berwick being the only other undefeated team in the competition and we finished strongly with an 8 goal win, 38 to 30 with the award going to Allegra Rose. D Grade had a convincing win over Berwick 34 to 26 being their first back-to-back win for the season, awards to Cassie and Chelsee. C Grade came away 20 goal victors with the final score 48 to 28, award to Katelyn. B Grade won 59 to 38 in what was a fantastic display of teamwork by all players, awards to Emily and Hailey. A Grade scored an amazing 60 goals to win over Berwick 32 with awards going to Tegan and Steph. The club would like to extend congratulations to Bethany Purcell (U13 Red), Isabella (Izzy) Hetherington (U13 Red), Emily Pollock (U15 Red), Maxine Fitiao (U15 Red) & Chelsea Gray (U17 Red) who have all been representing SEFNL in their respective age group teams competing in tournaments over the past few months. Well done to you all, you have done Cranbourne proud! Good luck to all teams today for Round 7 as we take on ROC at Officer for what should be a day of close matches. Go Eagles!

Beaconsfield A GRADE - For the first time this season all 9 A Grade players were available and took the court, in what was a display of awesome netball. Bianca Sanzaro showed her agility in Goal Shooter, and improved close range accuracy, while Danielle Cameron and Kaela Hughes turned over countless balls in defence. Every player was influential this week leaving nothing to chance after the last two disappointing starts that cost us the game against Tooradin and ROC. Keeping Pakenham to Under 30 and scoring over 60 goals ourselves, we were thrilled with the effort and team work of all the girls. Next week we lose a number of players to VNL commitments, but look forward to showcasing our up and coming talent in the side. Awards: Bianca, Kaela, Danielle C GRADE - Another dominate win by the girls. Even with significant changes at half time the playing group demonstrated their versatility and lapped up the opportunity. Awards: Vicky, Dan and Bec D GRADE - Playing Pakenham at home this week in unseasonably hot conditions, we started out well but seemed to lose our intensity towards the end of the first 2 quarters. Defence was extremely strong and Chloe Sutherland and Chelsea Little were fantastic stepping up from 17 Whites displaying some great skills and never looked out of place. We came home extremely strong in the last quarter, really putting together some great sets of play, and utilised every turnover. Awards: Tayla Entwistle-Khans, Jess Airdrie-Premier Hair and Claire Van Lambaart-Charcoal Chicken. U15 RED - Our 15 Reds enjoyed a great game against

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes Pakenham. With Kelly Wilson filling in for the day as coach, and Loz and Tahlia S coming up to play from the Whites, it was quite a different mix. The sides were well matched and played in a super competitive game where we were able to slightly edge them out each quarter. Tiahn had an unbelievable game with Jemima in defence, while Ariah shot and moved expertly in the ring, supported by a strong mid court led by our centre Tahlia L. Next week we hope to have a full side back to take on a tough game against Doveton Awards: Tiahn, Jemima, Tahlia L U15 WHITE - The girls played Pakenham this week and put in a strong 4 quarter performance. The girls are improving as a team every week which is great to see. The most pleasing part was to see them run out a full game finishing with a brilliant last quarter, scoring 12 goals to 2 which lead to a very pleasing 33-15 win. Thank you to Charlotte, Eliza and Sami for helping us out this week. Awards: Alyssa and Darcy U13 RED - The girls couldn’t come away with a win this week but they certainly didn’t let anyone down. It was on from the word go and the girls stayed within reach of the win the whole game, unfortunately allowing Pakenham to take the lead in the last quarter. We’re looking forward to working on strengthening the team at training and coming back better than ever. Awards: Ella, Eliza and Sammy. U13 WHITE - The girls played another great team game this week against Pakenham. Everyone put in 100% and they were rewarded with a win. Our defence end worked hard throughout the game and their pressure caused many turnovers down the court and in the ring. Beacy 24 def Pakenham 11 Awards: Subway Officer-Sophie Stinear, Beacy Charcoal Chicken-Miller Willis & Premiere Hair-Tahnee Ziesler

Netball Notes Berwick Our 2nd away game this season, turned out a gorgeous day at Cranbourne after the fog lifted. Starting the day strong 13 whites in another close game with multiple lead changes throughout every quarter. Defensive pressure was awesome and intercepting everything that came our way. 3 goal lead into the final quarter our girls had to dig deep, with 30 seconds left, up by one and Cranbourne in possession, great defensive pressure enabled us to cause a turnover and come away with the win! Awesome effort. On Court 1 the Reds came out on court with a bit of a messy start, by the second half of the game they figured out as a team what needed to be done to step up their performance and come away with a win ! Our defensive pressure down the whole court was strong through the entire game. The adaption to position changes was awesome. Our 15 Whites game coming from behind after the first quarter the girls made steady progress throughout the game. Space awareness has improved immensely since round 1. Body work and positioning are also starting to gel as we begin to play as a team. Well done girls great game and fantastic shooting Rylee. On Court 1, reds knew coming into this round it was going to be a hard fought battle. The girls stepped out on court as a united front and didn’t disappoint. Their transition play from defence to goals and contribution from all was outstanding. The girls played smart netball and continue to add new elements to our game. Well done for your hard work to come out with a win. 17 whites had the best start to a game they have all season ! They showed the development they have made in being able to execute a game plan consistently through the 4 quarters. The score line didn’t reflect the battle that was on the court, they should be very proud of themselves. Sending our love and best wishes on returning to full health, to our beautiful Aker! Court 1 today Reds were tested by an experienced team. We were a little flat at the start and Cranbourne jumped us from the start. The team fought back for the next three quarters with strong performances across the court, we just could not bridge the gap. D Grade saw such a great effort today, once they got over the 1st quarter they kept up for the final 3 quarters of the game. Playing as a team today with seamless transitions and glimpses of effortless play. They were able to implement tactics practiced at training. Keep fighting and trying each week girls. C Grade saw the bye come at a bad time. Our flow has started, but as always, we continue to work hard and push ourselves to be the best we can, show we can make it to the top half of the leader board. To Cranbourne’s credit they came out firing and made it hard for us from the start. With some perseverance and will power we fought to stay in the game with some great transition through our mid court, something we have worked a lot

on, just couldn’t claw back enough. Special mention to Zoe Matson for an awesome defensive game. B Grade had a shaky start but managed to build the momentum through the game with some great passages of play. Well done to Nicole Green in putting her adapt plan out there for 4 quarters. This team will keep on improving to build to a win. A Grade - We started well within 5 goals but with stellar performances across the whole court by Cranbourne, they were just too good for our girls to complete against. Team keeps on being positive as they know they can put the win together and just got to believe in the systems and structures.

Doveton It was great to be playing netball at home on such a beautiful day. This week we welcomed Officer, a few wins, a few losses and three draws!!! U13 RED - Playing with only 6 players was always going to be tough for this team against ROC, some more training drills on moving the ball down the court effectively and a win will hopefully come for our baby doves! U13 WHITE - Tried so hard all game but just couldn’t manage to convert in the goal ring. Summer was outstanding in the midcourt; the whole team deserves a massive pat on the back for sticking at it and continuing to smile – so proud of our baby doves! U15 RED - The final scored didn’t reflect how close the game was. The girls set out to do one thing and that was to reduce the score from last time we played ROC and they did that by 11 goals. The difference between the two teams were unforced errors – our team had 20, which is way too many if you want to win against the top side, but in saying that the improvement was amazing! U15 WHITE - A different line up for this team proved to be a huge difference in score line since our last encounter

Netball Notes with ROC, another win for these girls is not far away! U17 RED - Well Well Well….. Once again first quarter we didn’t show up. Poor choices and plenty of turnovers – we go in 8 goals down. With the girls showing fight and spirit we worked our way back into the game. Great effort after half time. Looking for a much better 4 quarter effort! U17 WHITE - Played against a very strong ROC team time around – they played their hearts out and never gave up, resulting in a draw. Very happy with the way these 10 girls have come together, they are becoming a very strong and skilled team. D GRADE - Well Well Well…. ROC came out physical putting pressure on us and putting us off our game. Defence held it together with the captain playing her best game of the year! Great teamwork creating plenty of scoring opportunity, we came away with a good win – girls are starting to click! C GRADE - An enormous squad today, with 11 girls available to play making it a huge mission to give all girls court time. Another draw after throwing away a 6 point lead in the last quarter – a few things to work on and back to the drawing board, but loving the commitment and effort the girls are bringing. B GRADE - 59 seems to be our favourite number in B Grade – hoping to get over the 59 mark, a goal a minute.

Excellent win today, I am confident that we can continue to put on comprehensive efforts every week and start maximizing our prowess and know how to play netball in the coming weeks. Love the talent, love the skill, love the game. 60 next week team – we are more than capable! A GRADE - Well well well….. It’s amazing what a good warm up can do. Not giving the other side a 5 goal head start and our defence executing team plans we came out even in first quarter. Voices up and attitude good the girls sensed they were in with a sniff. Great work rate, ABC, massive efforts and intensity all over the court we kept the game under control. Great team effort, well done to all 9 – best effort so far!

By Lachie Ramage With the superb win over the Northern Football Netball League still fresh in the memory it was time to move on and get back to regular season action where some teams started to show their superiority. In Division 1 the Eastern Devils didn’t let the week off get in the way of their red-hot form, defeating Beaconsfield by 78 points in a game that was all but finished at half time. But credit goes to the Eagles for fighting the game out and stemming the scoring flow in the second half. Interleague-hero Chloe Hunt booted four goals for the Devils and continued her stellar start to the season. Seaford cruised to a 72-point win over Endeavour Hills, whilst St Kilda made light work of Port Melbourne, running away 86-point winners. Cranbourne continues to show that it is a contender this year beating Gippsland by 86 points, and in the final game of the round Mornington had their kicking woes in the first quarter, kicking 2.8 to 0.0 to leave the door open for Chirnside Park. The Bulldogs eventually pushed on, kicking straighter after quarter time to win by 55 points. In Division 2 the Seaford Tigers took on Tyabb in a tight contest which had the Yabbies up by four points at three quarter time. The Tigers dug deep and kicked four final quarter goals and kept the Yabbies scoreless, winning by 21 points.

44

Cranbourne had an easy win against Edi-Asp, winning by 83 points, whilst Bass Coast sustained its brilliant form keeping the St Kilda Sharks scoreless and winning by 151 points. Tayla Stahl-Smith had a terrific game claiming beston-ground honours and booting eight goals. The Eastern Devils and Warragul found the going tough for three quarters, with only one goal being scored with the scores being 1.4.10 to five behinds. In a game where a goal was tough to come by the Devils kicked two final-quarter majors to win by 13 points in the end. In Division 3 Pearcedale had a great win over Officer, victorious by 57 points where Hayley Roberts starred with five goals. Seaford had to fight for a 30-point win over Karingal, while Cerberus/Crib Point won by 10 goals against a competitive Pakenham side. Sarah Flanders was the star snagging six goals. Mornington reigned supreme over Red Hill by 36 points, whilst Hastings downed the Frankston Bombers by 37 points in what looked set to be a much closer game going in. Both teams going in to the match were undefeated but it was the Blues who pushed their way up the ladder to sit second after their victory.
