AFL South East Footy fun at the Moorooduc Primary School By David Nagel The name Moorooduc Primary School wouldn’t resonate too strongly with clubs in the South East Football Netball League – but our local area could learn a bit from the school when it comes to some fresh and innovative ideas to encourage participation levels in junior football. Over the last four years, the school’s PE teacher and Pines senior coach Paddy Swayn has run the Moorooduc Football League (MFL), with games played between students at lunchtime on Tuesday and Friday of each week during term two. The school’s population is 260 students and they have a six team competition, consisting of the Barak Bullfrogs, Loders Rd Lyrebirds, Males Rd Mavericks, Bungower Bunyips, Derril Rd Dingoes and the Goman Goannas – all named after roads that surround the school. Each team has approximately 12 players on their list and they play AFL 9’s. Teachers coach the teams and the presidents of each team are grade-six students. Swayn gives up his private time two days a week to umpire the games with students acting as live commentators and goal and boundary umpires.

Winner of 5 Gold Medals

The school has a home-and-away season and a final series, which includes a best-of-the-rest game between fifth and sixth on the ladder who play for the next year’s number one draft pick. If a new kid comes to the school and he or she shows some talent the winner of that game has the number-one ticket to success! Two semi-finals are played between first and fourth, and second and third on the ladder, with the two winners going through to the grand final. At half time of the main game each year the prep kids take part in an Auskick game – one of the highlights of the season. And the fun – well it doesn’t stop there in the MFL. It has a leading goal-kicker award - The Goosey Medal – named after champion local full-forward Simon Goosey, and a Brownlow equivalent for best and fairest in the competition named ‘The Swaynlow’. There is a Young Gun Award for the best grade-two rookie, and a draft camp is held at the start of the year where the new draftees do the beep test, 20-metre sprint, vertical leap and time trial before their draft day comes around. And match reports are produced in the school’s newsletter, keeping teachers and students alike up to date with all the football action. Swayn said the entire school had embraced the concept, which pokes a bit of fun at the big boys in the AFL. “It all started with wanting to do something a little bit different at lunch time, footy was getting a bad rap at the time so we thought we’d start something up and get more kids involved in playing the game,” Swayn said. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, it’s all a bit of fun, but it really promotes footy and the improvement in our kids over the last four years has been amazing. “If you ask them to bring a reader to school they forget, but you don’t see too many of these kids leave their footy boots behind when it’s game day. The kids are great with it and they really get involved and feel like they’re part of something which is really important. “Without knowing it the kids are learning about leadership, improving their organisational skills and also learning a bit of IT as well, so there are plenty of positives to take away even apart from the fitness sides of things.” What a great model to encourage participation in junior football.

AFL Vic Country AFL Victoria launches state-wide FightMND Round AFL Victoria is proud to partner with FightMND to launch the inaugural state-wide Sockit2MND Round from June 16-17. As part of AFL Victoria’s commitment to social responsibility, the new dedicated round will raise awareness for motor neurone disease which affects thousands of Victorians each year, with at least two Australians diagnosed with MND each day. Players from participating leagues and clubs across all levels of football– from grassroot leagues to Victoria’s state competitions - can wear blue and white socks during the Fight MND Round to raise awareness of the disease. The AFL Victoria Sockit2MND Round follows the annual ‘Big Freeze at the G’ event which saw all 18 AFL coaches plunge into a pool of ice as part of the Round 12 AFL match between Collingwood and Melbourne at the MCG. With the Big Freeze now synonymous with the Queen’s Birthday Monday AFL clash, Victorians are encouraged to support the community FightMND Round by taking part in the online social media campaign ‘Sockit from the Pocket’, which challenges participants to post their attempt at kicking a goal from the football pocket to help raise awareness about MND. Channel 7’s Peter Jackson VFL coverage this weekend on Saturday and Sunday will highlight the Sockit2MND Round, with players from all clubs wearing the MND socks. Since launching in 2014, FightMND has committed more than $23 million into research designed to ultimately find a cure for MND, while a further $2.5 million has been invested to purchase vital equipment to assist with the care of MND patients across Australia. The dedicated FightMND Round is the second of four state-wide rounds to be conducted this year, with the Love the Game Round (July 21-22) and White Ribbon Round (August 4-5) to be held later in the season.

Footy Preview Feathers set to fly at Casey Fields By David Nagel Expect a mid-air collision of the highest order when SEFNL’s two sets of Eagles – Cranbourne and Beaconsfield – meet in what could be a double-chance decider at Casey Fields. It’s been a fair-dinkum pain in the bum writing these games up over the years, with no room for Eagles anywhere. There…we’ve done it…got the word in twice so we can sleep comfortably for the remainder of this weekend. But back to the footy. This one should be a cracker with these teams widely regarded as the third and fourth best teams in the competition at the moment. The ladder might not agree, but Berwick would appear to be the main challenger to Narre Warren’s dominance right now. So there’s bragging rights, and a lot more riding on the line in this one! The Eagles, sorry Beaconsfield, have been in spectacular form of late, crushing lowly opposition in the manner of a very good football team. Their average winning margin in victories over Tooradin, Officer, Pakenham and Doveton has blown out to 79 points – pretty impressive in anyone’s language. The return of Taylor Joyce comes at the perfect time for the Eagles, sorry Beaconsfield, with Joyce set to form a dangerous three-pronged attack with Nathan Langley and Scotty Meyer when he drifts forward after executing his duties in the ruck. If the Eag…Beaconsfield midfield can get its hands on the footy, particularly players like the Johnston boys, Damien and Daniel, and Connor Guley then Beacy is going to be an awfully hard team to stop. Recruits Matt Homfray and Sean Dwyer have played some really good footy of late, while Kyle O’Sullivan, Riley Verbi and Jake Bowd are going to be Beacy regulars for many more years to come. The challenge today, to defeat Cranbourne for the second time this season.

Exciting Cranbourne mid-forward Ryan Jones will need to be watched closely by Beaconsfield today. The Eagles…Cranbourne – have a huge three weeks ahead with this game against Beacy, Narre Warren and Berwick set to decide their true destiny this season. Names like Davey, Boland, Osborne, Morrish, Bee-Hugo, Tharle, Jones and Holt roll off the tongue when you think about Cranbourne, but it’s a new breed that has had a huge impact in recent times. Jordy Bertrand, Zak Roscoe, Kirk Dickson and Dillan Bass have all become very good senior footballers in a short space of time. This is a really tough one to pick, Cranbourne slightly more aggressive going forward and Beaconsfield with a very well organised defence. It’s the Eagles to get the money by 13 points – Cranbourne that is!

Footy Preview Berwick hasn’t sung its song since all the way back on May 12 and will look to tune up its vocal chords after a big win over Officer at Edwin Flack Reserve today. The Wickers have fallen short in two classic contests since the interleague weekend, falling asleep in the last 40 minutes against Cranbourne before succumbing to the might of Narre Warren at Fox Road a fortnight back. The Magpies led by a solitary point at three-quarter time… setting up an epic last stanza of footy. The Magpies struck first, and struck hard, with Stewie Scanlon dribbling through a snap over his left shoulder before Trent Shinners clunked a great grab, and converted from long range, to give the Magpies a clear advantage. Tom Brennan answered for the Wickers before Nick Scanlon drilled home a customary bomb from the 50-metre mark to edge the margin out to two goals. Harry Money then kicked his third, at the 23-minute mark, to set up a thrilling finale. The Wickers had their chances, with Money, Dylan Morris, Ash Smith and Travis Tuck all narrowly missing shots on goal, before Stewie Scanlon iced the cake with a clinical finish at the 30-minute mark of the term. The Wickers had six more scoring shots than the Magpies with Michael Riseley, Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and Ash Smith all walking away with the knowledge that the task is tough…but not impossible! It’s not winning form, but not horrible form either with Stewie Kemperman and his boys still in the mix for this year’s premiership. After a fast start, sitting top of the ladder after round three, Officer has stalled and been overtaken by the four power clubs of the competition.

Doveton will look to bounce back against Tooradin at Robinson Oval.

8

Blair Allan, Ben Tivendale and Sean Roach have been consistent performers for Doug Koop, but getting that high level of consistency to filter through to all players on the list has failed to materialise at the moment. The Kangas have missed the class of the injured Matty Clarke up forward and it’s hard to see where a winning score will come from against the Wickers. Berwick will be hungry to sing that song – so expect a raucous rendition of the club anthem after a 64-point victory. Doveton and Tooradin begin a very important eight days for both clubs when the bottom-two teams in the competition lock horns at Robinson Oval this afternoon. The Doves take on Pakenham next week, and the Seagulls host Officer in games that both teams would fully expect to be more than competitive in. There won’t be too many opportunities to claim victories this year so both teams will need to strike while the iron’s hot. We mentioned this in last week’s footy record, but it’s worth repeating – the Doves are incredibly young this year. Daniel Charles must feel like a kindergarten teacher at times with 15 teenagers having pulled on the boots in senior footy this year. A dozen of those are still in that teenage bracket, while another nine players are either 20 or 21 years of age. It’s a brave move to have such a young list at such a strong level of competition – but the Doves deserve a pat on the back for looking ahead to the future. Experienced types like Russ Gabriel, Matty Stapleton and Matt Jameson will be putting their hands out shortly for baby-sitting fees. Mitch Cotter, Brad O’Brien and Beau Anthony are three youngsters the Seagulls will really need to keep an eye on this afternoon. The Seagulls are clearly struggling at the moment, having not won a game since round one, but do have a loyal band of players that will be keen to produce their best in the coming weeks. Jake O’Donnell, Michael Hobbs, Adam Splatt and Julian Suarez have seen it all before at Westernport Oval and know what it takes to wins games of footy. Tim Lenders, Kris Sabbatucci, Cameron Brown and Jordy Kelly are the next generation of leaders and need to make a stand over the next three weeks against the Doves, Officer and Pakenham. This one will be close – but the Doves will climb off the bottom of the ladder with a 13-point victory. Narre Warren has had two weeks to celebrate a magnificent victory over Berwick and will look to continue its great form when it welcomes Pakenham to a new-look Kalora Park. The Magpies new rooms look absolutely stunning – especially for this Collingwood supporter – with black and white stripes the prominent feature of the new building. But it’s been what’s happening on the other side of the fence that has been equally impressive this year, with Matt Shinners still to taste defeat in his comeback season as a senior coach.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview The Magpies have never had an issue with scoring, they finished third on the ladder last year but still kicked 196 more points than any other team in the competition, but their defensive structures were poorly maintained. The Magpies conceded 64 points per game in 2017, ranked fourth behind Berwick (45), Beaconsfield (54) and Cranbourne (57) but have cut that back to 56 points this season. Ryan Quirk, Jesse Davies and the ever-reliable Ben King have been sturdy defenders all year while the run-and-carry of Matt Soroczynski, Tom Miller and Col McNamara is a clear and ever-present danger. And the return of Trent Shinners, combined with the emergence of ruckman Trent Papworth, has allowed Jake Richardson to concentrate more on his defensive efforts this year. If ever a hole needed fixing, Richo was the man for the task, but this season he appears to be a much more settled commodity. Pakenham also would have enjoyed the last fortnight after scoring its second win of the season against Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve. The cream really rose to the top for the Lions that day with Steve O’Bryan, Jimmy Harrison, Steve Morey and skipper Chris Cardona producing pretty close to their best footy. Morey kept Seagulls dangerman Andrew Dean to two goals and received great support from the likes of Joel Laycock, Tyler Guan, Jackson Berry and Cooper Sheppard. The Lions will be keeping a close eye on the fortunes of fifth-placed Officer at the moment and will fancy their chances of making a late run at this year’s finals series. But today will more about damage control and trying to rein in a dangerous Magpies’ attack. The Maggies will be too good and win running away by 45 points.

Footy Notes Narre Warren This Round we host Pakenham for the first time in 2018 and welcome all our members, supporters and visitors to a ‘new look’ Fox Road. Our redeveloped pavilion is nearing completion and we again thank you all for your patience and understanding while the building works continue. In Round 7 we hosted Berwick and took the points in the Ones and Under 19s; while our Twos were well-beaten in the top-of-the-table clash. Seniors: When these two league heavyweights wrestle for points at the top end of the table for the Pat Sweeney Shield you can be assured of a pure contest – man on man, play by play, tough accountable footy. This match in front of a big crowd at Fox Road showcased the quality of the SEFNL in 2018. Berwick got the jump and opened up a 3-goal break through hard running, winning the clearances OPT. and applying pressure to Narre’s ball carriers across the ground. However, the beauty of ‘Narre 2018 1 version’ is the versatility and adaptability of our playing group affording our coaching team multiple options when Plan A doesn’t pan out. This match was won by Narre in the third quarter – 4 goals to 1. Our backline held up under immense pressure, the Quirk brothers put their bodies on the line countless times; Trent Shinners clunked some big grabs and broke packs around the ground, while Nick and Stewie Scanlon, with seven goals between them, seemed to find critical goals everytime we needed a steadier. OPT. With just a point in it at the last change, the final quarter was a 2 war of attrition and Narre took the points by under 2 goals. You’d go a long way to see a better game of local footy. Reserves: Narre’s Twos were dominated by Berwick from the first bounce and never quite got our game going. After our slow start, it was only the desperation of a few Narre jumpers that kept Berwick’s second quarter tally to just one major, and we were still in the game at half time. Brent Urwin battled hard with Mitch Van Der Loop, Daniel Jackson and Dean Scanlon but we couldn’t find the scoreboard. Our forward line seemed to getOPT. further and further from our goals as Berwick piled on the second half 3 pressure and dealt us an 8 goal beating. Under 19s: The Under 19 game was Berwick 2nd v. Narre 3rd - wrestling for the title of contender to unbeaten, top-of-the-ladder Beaconsfield. An even first half was an arm-wrestle that tested the fitness of these two young sides, and the football was fast and furious. It was Narre who upped the ante after half time and found four thirdquarter goals to Berwick’s one. Big Max Sheppard and Ash Williamson were unstoppable for Narre, and in fact shared 9 of Narre’s team total of ten goals. Dylan Webber, Lachie Baker and Ryan Patterson were also instrumental in a memorable win. Social notes - Our first major function in our new social club at Fox Road will be our annual NWFNC Berwick Mazda Corporate Lunch. Cranbourne We hosted Doveton last week on the Queen’s Birthday weekend and come away with two comfortable wins. With no Under 19s the Ressies kicked the day off on a cracking winters afternoon. We got off to a flyer in the first quarter kicking 6.8 to 0.0 and well, never looked back from there. The Doves did well to even filed a side with Toddy O’Donnell and Dave Hoy strapping the boots on to their Zimmer frames to ensure the boys got a game. By half time the lead had jumped out to 72 points and the only danger at this point was that we’d need to get the defib out for the older blokes. By ¾ time, it was an even 100-points but could’ve been a lot more as we managed 3.10 with the majority of those shots coming front easy set shots. By the end of the game, we had recorded a 131-point win, with Russo N., Koey, Haz, Bakes, Lewy and Harry all featuring in the best. As for the old Dovey blokes, a massive thanks to them for pulling the boots on to ensure we got a hit out. The main game pretty much started the same (minus the old blokes) and consequently ended the same. Doveton were more than competitive in the first half and being as undermanned as they are, took it up to us as we lead by five goals. After that however, she got ugly, as we stacked on quarters of 9, 11 and 10 goals to run away easy winners by 211 points. The seniors accuracy in front of goals was better than that of the twos as we finished the day with 35.21 compared to the 17.29 of the twos. The main man of course for the day was Holty. He finished the day with 10 majors and is now perched on 987 senior club goals. When the 1000th goal comes is anyone’s guess but we know it isn’t far away.

Footy Notes Best for the day were Whoppa, Holty, Vel, Micky B., Oz and Moz…. but not Yoz! $5k Draw Congratulations to our winners at the $5k Draw held last Sunday. 1st Place went to Glenn Weir, 2nd to Anthony Vella and 3rd to Leah Young. Another great night was had and we now look forward to our next function. Info Night This Tuesday we have an information night about the future direction of the CFNC. We encourage all members, players and spectators to attend and have a say on what is best for our club as we look to secure the future in a new league. This will kick off at 7:30pm. Sponsors Luncheon This is now set down for July 14 at our home game against Tooradin. Go Eagles!!

Berwick I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend off. It had plenty of sunhine and was a good excuse to skip the football for a week. We have come off a couple of losses and probably needed the break. Close as it was, with more scoring shots its about the 4 points. Today is the last game for the first half of the season and Im looking forward to us showing what we can do in the second half. The reserves had an emphatic win and are certainbly up and about. Burgo got his jumper ripped off again. The girls at work who re-sew the torn jumpers for us said to me... not again. This man have many fight. I said NO, he is just mis-understood. The 19s played well but went down to a disciplined Narre team. With a few due to come back in to the team in coming weeks we will continue to see improvement in this group. Also a special welcome to all our past players here today. Please ensure all your latest contact addresses are with the club so we can send out club updates during the year. Better still, get Facebook. Carrots and Homer are on it now so Im sure the rest of you can give it a crack The major raffle is coming up and as we know this is our single major fundraising effort for the year. Please get on board and ensure we sell them ALL MAJOR RAFFLE DRAWN ON SUNDAY JULY 21st COCKTAIL NIGHT July 7th

striving to play, however we were for the most part out classed by a side which was clearly prepared to work harder, for longer periods on the day. In more positive news, whilst the Senior Men’s Teams enjoyed a week off over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend our Senior Women’s team travelled to Crib Point on Saturday Morning and had a great win After a fantastic start including a few early goals the girls proved too strong, maintaining their lead to come home victorious by 22 points. This week we head up the highway to face raining premiers Berwick in what is shaping to be a fantastic challenge, whilst the our Women’s team are at home against Mornington Saturday Morning. Finally, there are a number of important dates on the calendar which we would like to bring to the attention of our members and supporters Saturday 23 June - College Night Social Function Saturday June 30th - Beaconsfield Bank Community Day - Past Players 30 year Premiership Reunion Saturday July 7th - Empire Night Saturday July 14th - VIP and life members luncheon Saturday July 21st - 10k Reverse Draw Good luck to all our team this weekend. Footy Notes Beaconsfield Today we travel to Cranbourne for the first time this year. This has never been a successful ground for us however today we hope our luck has changed the 19s will kick off with a ripper of a game fingers crossed the planned weather forecast does not ruin the day however it will be a tight game and great result of we can come away with the win. The reserves have hit a bit of a patch winning 4 on the trot under coach Mitch Welsh however today will be a tough one against the odds we are confidant the team will give it there best regardless of the result however they are confidant they can get the job done. The seniors will turn the day into a massive game after Cranbourne came off a record breaking performance, We are coming here today to try and prove we are serious contenders. Winning 4 on the trot also to the seniors does not mean much now as its starting to get to the serious side of things and the guys need to be focused controlled and disciplined to pull off a big win today at Cranbourne. Our senior women’s have generated some great results over there last few outing’s having strong wins however today they face a tough game against Seaford at Seaford. Tonight is our clubs annual club 30 dinner function hosted by Brad Battin and special guest Jason Ackermanis it will be a great night and there are still limited tickets available if you want to come along for a great night.

Our White Night was a great success with a great time had by all. Our finals team reunion function was also well attended by many past players catching up with their teammates. Our next big function will be our Sponsor’s Luncheon on the 23rd. This is always a terrific time where we get to thank the people who contribute so much to keep our Club going. The Pakenham Football Club also decided this week on our future for 2019. This is a huge decision and we are grateful for all of the support and assistance we have had as a club to make it. The committee and the Club are now able to look forward with excitement to the next season. Go Pakky!!

Pakenham After many weeks of competing well but not getting the job done, it was a great effort from the boys to put a consistent 4 quarter effort in to get the points against a determined Tooradin team. With our strong focus on junior player development, it was great to see Jafar Ocaa make his debut with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC and young Brayden Hunt who is new this year to the club and has been in great form in the under 19’s made a great impact in the seniors. With all 22 players individually doing their part for the win, a special mention must go to Steve O’Byan, Chris Cardona, Stephen Morey, & James Harrison who have all been in great form this year. The players would also like to thank the 1988 & 1998 premiership players who were there to celebrate the win with the boys as we value & appreciate the contribution you all made to this great club. Today’s game against an in-form Narre Warren will be a tough outing, but if we can play the football we know we can play then it should be a good game. Club Notes

SEDA 2018 AFLSE Regional Junior Championships AFL South East dripping with junior talent Brilliant weather and even better football from the future stars of the game were just two of highlights of a thrilling conclusion to the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships on the weekend. Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in the three-day carnival, which began at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday before switching to Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for Saturday and Monday fixtures across the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Competition was fair but fierce, with all four leagues walking away with at least one win over the carnival. The FDJFL led the way with three wins, including a dominant performance in the Under-15 Boys, with the MPJFL claiming two winning shields and the SEJ and AFL Yarra Ranges taking the spoils in the Under-13s and Under16s respectively. The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA). AFLSE RGM John Anderson said the carnival had quickly developed a strong reputation for identifying the next wave of talent emerging through the junior system. “The Regional Junior Championships have become a very important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as selection on AFL and AFLW lists, “ Anderson said. “It was fantastic to see so many up-and-coming young footballers putting themselves to the test against the best players from other leagues. “Congratulations to all the leagues, their coaches, support staff, parents and players for their commitment to what was a fantastic carnival played in great conditions at three of the best venues in the region. “I would like to wish all the players the best of luck as they look towards higher honours in their football journey.” This year’s carnival was proudly supported by SEDA College, where Year 11 and 12 students complete their senior secondary education immersed in the sport industry. The best of the best from Beaconsfield By David Nagel With the curtain coming down on the 14-year history of the Casey Cardinia-South East Football Netball League it’s worth reflecting on the most dominant era from any team in the competition. Beaconsfield’s A Grade netballers won a remarkable fiveconsecutive premierships – from 2008 to 2012 – three times breaking the heart of Pakenham before backing up with victories over Keysborough and ROC. Shona Osborne began the run for the Eagles, coaching the team to its first-three titles. She then handed over the reins to Jess Brady for the 2011 success before Bec Pryor took control for the 2012 triumph. Pryor was a very proud coach after her girls had flocked to the podium and held five fingers high in the sky after their last success. The Eagles had defeated ROC after losing to the Kangaroos twice during the home-andaway season, but found a direct path to the big dance with a win in the second semi-final. The Eagles had put their unchallenged big-game experience to good use. “The girls did believe in themselves,” Pryor said. “They stepped up a level and knew what it took to win. Sometimes when you win, as a coach you still don’t feel great as some girls might not get on the court. As a coach I feel really proud, nine girls all got on the court and played great netball. All girls contributed to the win.”

Pryor couldn’t nominate a best on court, instead attributing the win to a team effort. However, she said the umpires’ best on court Jasmine Maddocks was a well-deserved recipient. “Jasmine is a fantastic leader and really takes control on the court,” she said. The grand final was no exception, with Maddocks leading a fit and determined team to a flag. “We felt confident we would get on top of them and that’s what we did in the end.”

Maddocks was the only player to take part in all five premierships for the Eagles, with Bridget Gargan, Jacinta Goldsack, Kellie Holland and Kylie Clarke completing that core group of players with four titles each. Danielle Llinares, Sarah Hogan, Andi Dickson, Bianca Sanzaro, Jennifer Driessen, Regan Brokenshire and Sarah Murphy all claimed multiple titles over that five-year journey.

Maddocks, now Jasmine Jones, was the star performer of the competition through that dominant period for the Eagles, winning multiple league best and fairest awards, stamping her status as the premium mid-courter in the competition. She may well be the best player to have pulled on a netball skirt in the history of the CCFL and SEFNL.

The Eagles lay down the challenge By David Nagel It would appear that someone from down Cranbourne way started to think a bit when we published a Narre Warren dream team from 2006 to 2013 in our May 12 edition of the Record earlier this year. We found that Narre Warren document just lying on the ground at Starling Road one day and, you wouldn’t believe it, we’ve done it again – stumbling across a screwed up piece of paper at Casey Fields last Saturday. Upon closer inspection, the hand-written document contains the names of a Cranbourne team from the last decade that at least one supporter believes would challenge the mighty Magpies on the footy field. This team – like the Magpies dream team – is absolutely dripping with class. Any team with the star quality of Marc Holt and Justin Berry, the stopping power of Brandon Osborne and the strong leadership of coach Doug Koop would be competitive against the best that the Magpies could throw their way. Holt has 987 goals to his name while Berry kicked 181 for the club in a four-year stint from 2010 to 2013. Matt Thompson was a gun defender before injury cut short his career, while Matty Rus, Curtis Barker, Ray George, Mat Fletcher and Michael Theodoridis were influential figures in a great run for the Eagles that began in 2009. Fletcher and Theodoridis join Holt as the only Eagles to have kicked more than 200 goals in the last decade.

Michael Boland’s athleticism has been the key feature of his ruckwork. After several years of languishing near the bottom of the table, the Eagles showed improvement in 2008 by winning seven games and finishing seventh on the ladder. They would return to finals football in 2009 before finishing top of the table in 2010 – but were eliminated in straight sets. The Eagles would then go a remarkable run where they played in six consecutive grand finals, achieving the ultimate accolade in football in 2011 and 2016, before being bundled out in the preliminary final last year.

The Eagles lay down the challenge From the start of 2010 to current day, the Eagles have played 140 games of home-and-away footy, winning 118, losing 21 and drawing one for a stunning winning strike rate of 84.29 percent. In next week’s edition, we’ll match up both fantastic teams and write a preview for what would be a wonderful game of football.

Cranbourne Team List Marc Holt has led the Eagles superbly over the last decade.

Anthony Vella won a best and fairest in a premiership year in 2016.

Ryan Davey was best on ground in the 2016 grand final.

Netball Preview Can Cranbourne continue to climb? By David Nagel Cranbourne’s improved form will put to the ultimate test today when Donna Wilson and her girls welcome Kelly Whitecross and Beaconsfield to Casey Fields. Cranbourne’s journey has been a unique one in 2018, losing its first four outings against quality opposition before bouncing back in style. Wilson’s Eagles have produced a stunning revival, rolling Pakenham, Berwick, ROC and Doveton to square away the ledger at four-four for the season. Without disrespecting the first three, it was last week’s win over the Doves that stamped Cranny as a big danger to the title prospects of the top-three - Tooradin-Dalmore, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren. Cranbourne has the quality – a similar list proved that last year by making it all the way through to the preliminary final. They took a while to get going but the likes of Tara Cecil, Steph Ryan, Nat Sparks and Tegan Stahl have really hit their straps in recent times. Alanah Hardy is a gun, while Tahlia Coates, Kayla Wilson, Tegan Robertson and Tayla Stahl have all played important roles at certain stages of the season. Beaconsfield has had a week off, with time to reflect on a gutsy win over Doveton in round seven. Beacy led by a goal at three-quarter time but pulled away in the last quarter to win by six in a positive sign going forward. Skipper Kaela Hughes was on VNL duties that day, leaving the heavy lifting to players like Jordan Lang, Zoe Mason and Rylee Nelson – who all responded with fantastic last quarters through the midcourt. This one will go all the way to the wire – but we’ll go for Cranny to win by three. Doveton’s task of bouncing back to the winners list will be tough with the Doves hosting the all-conquering Tooradin-Dalmore at Robinson Oval today. The Doves have been competitive with some of the better teams in the competition but have been slipping down the pecking order in recent times. They now sit fifth, with ROC breathing down their neck for the one remaining finals spot. Liz Edwards has some quality on her side with Chelsea Imanisani and Hayley Stewart two of the brightest prospects going around. Those two girls – and all of their teammates – will need to be switched on today. Kelly Andrews has her Seagulls playing a relentless brand of netball, strong and physically demanding, but attractive to watch at the same time. Bec Kinna and Ebony Dolan are superstars in defence, while Emma Iacovou and Sara Duncan have a tremendous work ethic in the engine room. The Seagulls have too much strength – they’ll win by 10 in the end. Narre Warren will look to consolidate its top-three position when the Magpies host Pakenham at Kalora Park.

Cranbourne-gun Alanah Hardy will need to be at her top against Beaconsfield today. The Magpies face an interesting run after this – with Cranbourne, Doveton and Tooradin all emerging quickly on the horizon. Kealeigh Brown and Jemma Osborne will be assigned the scoring duties through the tough run and will look to find their range against the Lions. Pakenham showed some really promising signs in its last outing against Tooradin, trailing by just one at half time before losing by 11 in the end. That was a really encouraging performance that will give players like Lauren Spinks, Kyra Esler, Katrina Meredith and Bec Langford some wonderful confidence going forward. The Lions are on the improve, there’s little doubt about that – but the Magpies will be a little too strong in the second half. And Berwick will look to break its duck when the Wickers welcome ROC to Edwin Flack Reserve. A percentage of nearly 60 indicates the Wickers have been competitive this year, with Emma Clarke, Kassidy Withers, Charlotte Tiplady and Renee Gill some of their better performed players. The Wickers are getting better, but just can’t sustain a full four-quarter effort at the moment. The Kangaroos have the motivation to play their best netball today. A big win over the Wickers could see the Kangas slot into fifth place and really enhance their finals prospects. Laura Quinn, Alisha Young, Georgie Douglas and Sara Villiers will be keen to make that happen – but it won’t be easy. If the Wickers can stick with the Kangas early we may have an upset on the cards, but the Kangaroos will win by a single-digit margin.

Netball Notes Cranbourne

Cranbourne hosted Doveton at Casey Fields for the Queen’s Birthday weekend in a great day of netball. UNDER 13 RED & WHITE – Both our Under 13 teams had wins over Doveton last round. We wish Doveton all the best for the rest of the season and commend these kids from both red and white teams who come out to play each week and never give up in such a tough competition. Cranbourne’s Awards this round went to: RED – Kyah & Emily WHITE – Mikayla & Gabbie UNDER 15 RED – What a tough, hard fought game of netball this one was, with Doveton just coming out on top of a determined Cranbourne team. Final Score – Cranbourne 22 defeated by Doveton 23 Awards – UNDER 15 WHITE – A fantastic 20 goal win to the White team against Doveton. Congratulations to Bethany Purcell & Kyah Hearn, two of our Under 13 Red players who stepped up this week to fill in for this team and both girls did a fantastic job with Kyah earning the BOC award. Final Score – Cranbourne 32 defeated Doveton 12 Awards – Kyah & Chelsea UNDER 17 RED – A great win against Doveton with a solid defence, mid courters were tireless and our goal shooters were on target, meant for happy coaches. A big thanks to Under 15 Red player Maxi for hanging out with us. Final Score – Cranbourne 40 defeated Doveton 31 Awards – Renada & Grace UNDER 17 WHITE – Poor passing from our girls let Doveton back in to this game and they took their opportunities, even after we came out firing, seeing Doveton snatch the lead back to win by 3. Final Score – Cranbourne 33 defeated by Doveton 36 Awards – Tiarna & Cassie D GRADE – The team played a really good brand of netball this match, but unfortunately we weren’t able to come away with the win as we let a determined Doveton team get the better of us in the end. Final Score – Cranbourne 25 defeated by Doveton 30 Awards – Holly Robinson & Samantha Bond in her 150th Game C GRADE – A close game that we just let slip after being in front and then goal for goal, in the end allowing Doveton to gain the win from our grasp. Final Score – Cranbourne 30 defeated by Doveton 34 Awards – Ellen Graham B GRADE – Not the outcome we have been working towards, with a slow start that saw us fall away to a huge deficit in the score line. The girls fought on though with some positive play that saw us drawing the last quarter with 16 each. Final Score – Cranbourne 38 defeated by Doveton 68 Awards – Yasmin & Sammy A GRADE – With fourth spot on the line, a tight and intense game ensued. Our defensive pressure was outstanding and Teags and Tahlia continued their great spirit in fighting hard against bigger opposition, but it

34

came down to our mid court of Kayla, Natalie & Steph who combined together communicating and driving the side with brilliant link up play to the final whistle. It was fantastic that the girls on the bench also brought in great support and voice to get this win as a team. Final Score – Cranbourne 41 defeated Doveton 32 Awards – Kayla & Natalie Good luck to all teams today as we take on Beaconsfield at home. Go Eagles!

Tooradin-Dalmore Last week we headed to Pakenham for the second time this season and enjoyed another successful day out with wins across the board for our four senior sides. The A-Grade and C-Grade teams were tested by persistent Pakenham sides, however both teams finished off with strong last quarters to come away with good wins. Well done to Bronte Evans who stepped up to A-Grade to fill the void in the goal circle, with a couple of girls out due to VNL commitments. She played an awesome second half and helped get the team over the line! The B-Grade team also battled it out in a tight four quarters against the Lions and held on to secure a five-goal win, with strong performances from Stacey Deayton in defence and Shona Wells through the mid-court. The D-Grade girls continued their successful season so far, getting another convincing win on the board. These girls are playing some great netball together and are sitting second on the ladder as we hit the halfway mark of the season. While our junior girls didn’t get any wins last week, it was great to see how much they had improved since we last played Pakenham in Round-1. Both individually and as teams, our young Gulls have improved out of sight, and continue to show some great signs against tough competition. A few of the teams keep edging closer to their opposition each week and reducing their losing margins, so we hope some success might be just around the corner for them! After enjoying a club dinner with the juniors and seniors last Thursday at one of our valued sponsors Tides Bar and Grill, and a long weekend without netball, we’re all rearing to get back out on the court this week. We head to Doveton for our first clash against them and look forward to what is sure to be another competitive day of netball. Tickets are now on sale for our Annual Formal Night on Saturday 7 July, so head to the Tooradin Dalmore Football Netball Club Facebook page for details and to purchase your ticket. We’d love to see as many players, parents and supporters there for what is always a great night!

Netball Notes Beaconsfield A GRADE - With the VNL Sunday Round this weekend, it was a great chance for us to showcase the up and coming talent we have at Beacy. Jordan Lang (B grade), Mackenzie Little (B Grade) and Emily Kerr (17U) all took to the court for our match against Doveton - mixing it with our super talented WD, Zoe Mason. Jordan showed her exceptional ability in C to control the ball and play, while Emily was lightning fast and agile in WA. Mackenzie made her second appearance on the team and continue to be an exciting player to watch, with a natural ability to contest tough balls and provide excellent defence support and pressure for the team. However as usual, Danni Cameron and Abbie Sheers worked expertly to defend the ring, while our goaling combination of Tanya, Danni F and Bianca grow in strength from week to week building that special on court bond that the team hopes to have perfected by finals. D GRADE - Unfortunately this week we were unable to match it with one of the top teams in Doveton. Allowing Doveton to get a great start in the first quarter was our down fall as we found ourselves chasing for the rest of the game. Taking nothing away from Doveton, they are a very strong and skilful team. We will learn from this and work hard for when we meet again. Looking forward to playing Cranbourne in a couple of weeks. Awards: Maddi P, Jess and Chelsea. U15 RED - The game against Doveton was always going to be challenging with key players out of the Beacy squad and the opposition a towering team. It was great to see the Beacy girls on court put in a huge effort and prove they were up for the challenge. The girls made the most of playing in front, with swift rapid movement to counteract the opposition’s height, with Millie leading the way there. The first half saw an even game, however the third quarter finished with a five goal lead in Doveton’s favour, and a final loss for Beacy of only four goals. The Beacy defenders, Jemima, Madeline and Tiahn, are to be commended on their effort throughout the entire game, creating many turnovers and opportunities for the team. Awards: Beacy Charcoal Chicken- Ariah Eagle, Premiere Haircut- Abbey Kerr & Subway- Millie Utber U13 RED - A chilli start to the day at Doveton. U13 Reds went out on the court and fired from the first whistle. Their communication on the court was great. Our competition wasn’t strong which allowed us to implement our court structures and strategies which we executed very well. I was able to move the girls around allowing them the opportunity to play positions they normally wouldn’t play. They certainly made the most of their positional changes. It was great to hear such great encouragement from the girls to their team mates on and off the court. A really positive game today resulting in a strong win 70-5.

36

Awards: Paige, Jemma & Keira U13 WHITE - This week the girls took on Doveton at Frawley Rd. They worked hard for all 4 quarters and backed each other up right down the court. With a steady lead for most of the game, it was a good opportunity to try some new combinations and to take the girls out of their comfort zones. No matter what position they were put in, the girls played their role, worked hard and remained settled throughout the game.

Narre Warren An impressive day out for the Magpies with two drawn games and six wins! This was our third home game in a row so a huge thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to make the day such a success. What a great club to be involved in! #buyin2018 U13 White: Berwick 24 def NW 20 What a fantastic game for the girls against Berwick. The girls played an excellent team game, showing so much improvement since the last time we played Berwick. Best on court awards went to Sienna, Jenna, Paige and Avani who were all outstanding. U13 Red: Berwick 34 def NW 19 Tough game today girls against a well drilled side. Our defence was much tighter than the previous game against Berwick. Well done. Great improvement. Our movement in goal the circle by Delainey feeding and shooting was fantastic. Unfortunately, Berwick were too strong and we lost our drive. Good experience though to tackle our next game. U15 White: NW 25 drew Berwick 25 Super exciting game this week, the girls worked really well as a team and drew with an undefeated Berwick team. Well done girls! U15 Red: NW 18 drew Berwick 18 A fantastic 4 quarter effort against an undefeated Berwick. We were certainly the underdogs going into the game, having lost to them in round 2 by 26 goals. Coming away with a draw was bittersweet but also was such a positive reflection of how much we have improved and how well we are working together as a team. The girls kept their heads and stayed strong when they needed to, just falling short. Awards could have gone to all 10 girls; however, they went to Holly S, Hayley and Roshelle. U17 White: NW 34 def Berwick 21 Another convincing win by 13 against a very good Berwick side with everyone playing to the best of their ability. Each week your team work is getting better and it shows on the scoreboard. Well done girls! U17 Red: NW 41 def Berwick 32 An awesome display of talent saw us come away with a

D Grade: NW 47 def Berwick 18 With lots of forced changes to our team, we started slowly but worked well into the game. We need to continue working on our intensity and pressure for four quarters. Thanks to Taylah, Lauren & Kacey for joining us this week. Best wishes to Britt for her op... Keep up the good work girls! BOC: Mikayla- Shanika’s award Kayleigh, Olivia and Georgia C Grade: NW 45 def Berwick 25 Berwick were a more competitive team then the team we met last time we played. Our defensive pressure was consistently strong, our midcourters moved the ball swiftly and patiently to feed the goalers who were very accurate. A fantastic team effort to come away with a 20-goal win. Awards Zoe, Jess, Taylah Simpson, Suzie and Hayley Carmichael. B Grade: NW 52 def Berwick 44 This group of ladies improve week after week, they have really bonded on and off the court. Their defensive pressure down the court is awesome. Awards: Amy, Jayde, Maddy M, Kate, Jaymie. A Grade: NW 61 def Berwick 36 An excellent defensive display from the whole team today, lead by our young defenders, Caity S, Caity E and Brit T. A dominant performance by our midcourters and goalers, throwing 61 goals. Overall an impressive team effort! Thanks Jayde and Tam for filling in. valued members and stakeholders in this decision. This is an exciting time for both our clubs as we look forward to bigger and better things at our new league for 2019. Our club welcomed Rob Wright for our training session last week. It was exciting to have Rob with his extensive coaching background attend and assist our players at training. Rob is currently an assistant coach at Collingwood (Defence specialist coach) having moved there from his role at NSW Swifts as their Head Coach. Prior to this Rob coached ANL for NSW and also involved in the NSW Institute of Sport and heavily involved in developing elite players squad program for NSW. Rob is passionate about giving back to grass roots community netball such as our club, and truly believes good skills are the essence of being successful and was so very positive of the quality training program Pakenham’s coaches provide its players. A great night was had by all involved. Sincere thanks to Rob for making the trip out to Pakenham Lions. We are looking forward to travelling to Narre Warren this week for Round 8, which sees us half way through already the 2018 season.

Netball Notes Doveton This week Cranbourne were our hosts, which meant a bit of a sleep in for our U13 Red baby doves . The morning started of cold but by afternoon was another great day for netball. Under 13 Red: Scoring seven goals against a strong team like Cranbourne was a great achievement by the team. Dakota was beston-court this week for her consistency and resilience in not giving up. Well done to all the girls on a great effort. U13 White: The baby doves showed thy have improved immensely since their first encounter against Cranbourne, our defence really stook up with every player creating a turnover during the game. BOC: Maya, a real ladder in this team who never gives up. U15 Red: Deserved this really hard fought win over Cranbourne this week. Over the last few weeks we have worked on improving our passes, which showed on court this week. The scores changed many times during the game, but the girls held strong and came away with the win. So very proud of these girls this week. U15 White: The girls came out firing and applied plenty of pressure all over the court, sticking to our game plan and provided opportunity to turn the ball over. We struggled to convert in the goal circle, but practice makes perfect and our shooters are still learning to work together, another win if not too far away for this talented team. U17 Red: Well Well Well… After last week’s performance was hoping for the same girls to show up….. After a slow start again giving Cranbourne a head start was always going to be difficult to catch up. To the girls credit they kept fighting. Improvement since the last time we played Cranbourne. 17 White: A very slot start this week. Cranbourne has scored 5 goals before we scored. The next three quarters the girls pulled together and played a strong defensive game while still scoring well down our end. The game was full of pressure and the girls stood strong and came away with the win. This team is showing some great netball skills and play well as a team – again, a very proud coach here! A Grade: Well Well Well… I think if we all be honest girls could have given more, ran harder, tried a bit more and giving more of themselves. Team work – team game. Fought out to the end with one girl running herself into the ground and throwing up. Looking for a big response next week!! B Grade: Well done ladies in breaking the 59 barrier. A very comprehensive effort where we looked after the ball well, mad good decision for ourselves and our team mates, we lead well by our captain and followed the process which resulted in a very high scoring game.

38

We need to keep putting theses performances together every week, so we knew what it takes to close out games when it counts and ensure that we are in a good position at the end of season for finals. C Grade: Huge improvement from last week, good to be back on the winning train again, combined team effort today – composure got us there in the and belief. Still plenty of work on as thee were a few slot patches. MVP: Charlene Dunn. D Grade: Well Well Well… Great team effort today. Came out first quarter with spring and voice. Can improve on a few areas such as passing and more consistency for four quarters. Well done on a good solid team effort.

SEWF ladder leaders make their mark By Lachie Ramage In a round where contenders locked horns in all divisions of SEWF, we came out with a real indication of who the teams to beat are in 2018. In division one Beaconsfield defeated Gippsland by 69 points, with Cherie Charles and Amber Robinson kicking three goals each. Cranbourne also had a comfortable win over Chirnside Park, 8.8.56 to 3.7.25, with Shaneece Stratton starring for the Eagles. Seaford continued its unbeaten form with a 60-point win over Port Melbourne, while the Eastern Devils 8.11.59 flexed their muscles in an undefeated clash against Mornington 1.5.11. The Devils kept scoring consistently to run away 48-point winners over a fellow contender. In the final game of division one, St Kilda Sharks defeated Endeavour Hills by 99 points with Carlee Portlock kicking four goals. In division two Bass Coast and Seaford locked horns in one of the best games of the year. The Breakers looked set to claim victory with scores being 3.5.23 to 1.7.13 at three-quarter time. But the Tigers fought right until the very end, scoring 1.2 to no score to narrowly fall short, 2.9.21 to 3.5.23. Tyabb were victorious over the St Kilda Sharks by 71 points, with Kylie Vigliarolo booting five of the teams 12 goals. Cranbourne made the trip to Warragul and the Dusties were right up for the challenge from the outset with scores being 1.0.6 to 1.2.8 at quarter time. Scores had moved little by half time, and after the long break neither team could break away with both sides scoring two goals each and creating a two point ball game heading in to the final term. In the final quarter the Eagles kicked two points to the

44

Dusties no score to claim the victory in a pearler by four points. In division three Hastings scored an inaccurate 10.22.82 to defeat Crib Point 1.2.8, where Bridgette Kupsch bagged five goals and stars Sarah and Jess Hocking were best on ground in the Blues 74-point win. Seaford 9.20.74 had an easy win over Pearcedale 1.4.10 with Danielle Jackson kicking four goals and claiming best on ground honours. Karingal 9.7.61 had a win over Pakenham 2.4.16, but the game was a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests with the Bulls being up by just 18 points at the last break. They then went on to kick four final quarter goals to claim the victory. Officer 6.7.43 defeated Red Hill 3.3.21, whilst Mornington continued its unbeaten run claiming a 37-point victory over a competitive Frankston Bombers with the scores being 8.13.61 to 4.0.24. PREVIEW/GAME OF THE ROUND In division one, the Eastern Devils will be looking to continue their unstoppable form when they face Cranbourne, a side who has lost only one game for the year and will gain further confidence with a win this week over the inform side of the competition. In division two Seaford clashes with the Eastern Devils in what looks set to be a thrilling game with both teams sitting second and third on the ladder after losing just one game. Whoever wins will claim second spot on the ladder and place themselves in a perfect position for a great finals run. In Division three Frankston Bombers meet Crib Point in a game that is crucial for both teams as the winner will claim fourth spot and will be sitting in a comfortable position to make a play for this year’s finals series.
