AFL South East Clark shines against the Suns Former Mt Martha junior and Dandenong Stingrays star Hunter Clark has been rewarded for a fine first 10 games of his career by receiving a NAB Rising Star nomination. Clark, taken at number seven by St Kilda in the 2017 National Draft, played an influential role in the Saints’ magnificent come-from-behind victory over the Gold Coast Suns last week. The 19-year-old showed composure beyond his years, driving the Saints forward off half back in one of the most memorable quarters of football for the season. After injuries to both Jimmy Webster and Bailey Rice decimated St Kilda’s already undermanned backline, Clark put his hand up to switch back from the midfield and help his teammates repel the Suns’ relentless attack. The Dandenong Stingrays product collected 17 disposals at 82% efficiency, including four contested possessions and five intercept possessions in his most damaging senior outing to date. Clark lifted in the last quarter, along with many of his teammates, finishing with four score involvements and six tackles. St Kilda Senior coach Alan Richardson was full of praise for the first-year Saint, particularly after the loss of two defenders “unbalanced things”.

“Clark, who’s planning to be a midfielder, goes back, and I thought he was just fantastic for us late,” Richardson told St Kilda media. “For a young person to have that sort of composure – he laid six tackles – there was a bit in it for the group.” Clark becomes the Saints’ second NAB Rising Star nominee this year after Ben Long’s Round 5 nomination against the Giants.

AFLSE Best Players - Jets deliver at the Junior Championships All four leagues that competed in the recent SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships have named their best players from the carnival. Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in the three-day carnival, which began at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday June 6 before switching to Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for Saturday and Monday fixtures across the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The FDJFL was the most successful league at the championships, claiming three titles.

AFL Vic Country Vic Country’s finest to take on Metro The top community football talent from across the state will have the chance to don their representative jumpers in the 2018 AFL Victoria Community Cup, following the release of the initial Vic Country and Vic Metro squads. An initial 42-man WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country squad and 34-man Vic Metro side have been announced following their performance in the third instalment of the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championships and taking into account player injuries and availabilities. In addition, an initial 54-player Energy Safe Victoria Country Under 19s representative side has been released ahead of its clash with the Victorian Amateur Football Association in the 2018 Under 19 Challenge Cup. The current highest ranked country competition and former number-one ranked community league Geelong Football Netball League boasts the most representatives in the initial Vic Country squad with ten players, followed by Goulburn Valley Football League and Ovens & Murray Football Netball League with six selections each. The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country side will once again be coached by AFL legend Danny Frawley, who will be keen to continue Vic Country’s winning form over Metro, after defeating Melbourne’s best by 39-points in their last encounter. Frawley will be pitted against 199-game Footscray legend Brian Royal, who will once again lead Vic Metro’s top senior talent. The number-one ranked Eastern Football League has eight representatives invited to join the initial Vic Metro squad, while players from the Western Region Football League (11 players), Northern Football Netball League (nine players) and Southern Football Netball League (eight players) round out the preliminary squad. Damian Sexton will lead the next generation of country Victoria talent as coach of the Under 19 Energy Safe Vic Country squad for the tenth consecutive year. Goulburn Valley League has secured the most selections in the initial Under 19 squad with nine players, followed by Ovens & Murray Football League and Geelong Football League with eight representatives each.

The Under 19 squad will look to claim its fifth consecutive win over VAFA, after securing a tight four point win over VAFA at Frankston Oval last year. The Vic Country vs. Vic Metro showdown will be held at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, with the Under 19 Challenge kicking off at 11:30am, followed by the seniors at 2:00pm. The initial squads will conduct training sessions in midJune, with the final squads to be released in the lead up to the 2018 AFL Victoria Community Championships. Footy Preview Old rivals to show off new tricks Two great rivals will reunite in the ultimate form of battle this afternoon when Narre Warren and Cranbourne lock horns in a top-of-the-table clash at Kalora Park. The emergence of Berwick as a genuine powerhouse of the competition has thwarted top-two encounters between the Magpies and Eagles since 2015. But the six seasons from 2009 to ’14 were something very, very special indeed. These two lived at the top of the table, competing 18 times and winning nine each, with Cranbourne defeating Narre Warren in the 2011 grand final – the Magpies reversing that result over the following two years. Since then the two have combined for just one premiership, the Eagles prevailing in 2016 to break the recent run of Beaconsfield (2014) and Berwick (2015,’17). The Wickers won’t agree, but we could be back to those halcyon days again this time around. The Magpies have been faultless this season and have capitalised fully on a slicker brand of footy than the previous two years. Brad Scalzo and Trent Shinners have added elite quality to the midfield and tall-stocks respectively, while Mitch Cox, Liam Myatt and Cory Machaya have added some real zip around the ground. The Magpies already possessed a left-footed jet in Josh Tonna, but Scalzo has doubled that list and created some massive headaches for opposition midfields. And the Magpies have the most potent forward line in the competition. Nick and Stewie Scanlon sit second and fourth on the goalkicking table this season, while Aaron Wilson reminded us all of his God-given talents with a six-goal performance against Pakenham last week. The Magpies were caught by surprise against the Lions who kicked 6.3 to 3.2 in the third term but, under the urgings of coach Matt Shinners, responded with a 10.5 to 0.2 final term. That final-quarter burst probably saved the Magpies from a tough week on the track!

Brad Scalzo has brought a touch of class to Kalora Park this year.

The Magpies covered the loss of the suspended Trent Cody well, and this week come up against a Cranbourne team that needs s restructure as well. The Eagles premiership hopes took a huge blow last week with ruckman Micky Boland going down with what appeared to be a season-ending knee injury. ‘Fluff’ was having one of his best seasons yet and will be an awfully tough man to replace. Do the Eagles rob Peter to pay Paul, and bring centre-half forward Troy Tharle into the ruck, or do they keep their existing structures and go with next level of available talent? It’s a big question for Steve O’Brien to answer, with Tharle a key component in how the Eagles move the ball going forward.

Footy Preview Cranbourne was well in its round-one clash against the Magpies before Nick Derbyshire hit the deck with a mystery ailment that seemed to knock the stuffing out of his teammates. Cranbourne won’t use it as an excuse – but there were some seriously affected players on Casey Fields that day. The Magpies on the other hand are famous for their ‘Us against them mentality’, and won’t like the fact that the round-one victory would be questioned in any way. Their attitude will be to go out and do it again – this time more impressively – and put one of their number-one challengers to the sword. And they will…by 33 points. Beaconsfield and Berwick will run onto Holm Park Reserve today for one of the more intriguing Battle of the Creeks in recent times. The Wickers have clearly had the wood over the Eagles for the last three years but are struggling to find their freeflowing best at the moment. Stewart Kemperman and his boys have gone down to Narre Warren twice, and surrendered meekly in one of the more surprising results of the season against Cranbourne in round six. Berwick taking the early initiative and handing it over without a whimper – that’s not what they’re all about! The Wickers are usually a resilient lot, who take pride in their ability to take their opponent’s best shot and then kill them with a slingshot-type approach off half back.

Can Cranbourne star Ryan Jones help inflict Narre Warren’s first loss of the season?

8

Bailey Asher, Madi Andrews and Bryce Rutherford warmed up for this week’s clash with some solid footy against Officer last week, while the impending return on James Magner and Andrew Morozoff will add some real grunt around the stoppages. Beaconsfield needs to make a statement, and what better chance than to do it on its own deck against a vulnerablelooking arch rival. Leigh McQuillen and his team have been flat-track bullies until this point in the season and need to at least be competitive here to gain some sort of momentum. Nathan Langley and Taylor Joyce will keep the Wickers’ defence honest in the aerial duels but need to apply pressure when the likes of Michael Riseley and co get their hands on the footy. This is basically it for the Eagles – either rise to the challenge and become a genuine contender or be satisfied with an elimination final win on August 26. The winner takes a top-three position – and it’s Berwick by 23 points. Pakenham can stake its claim for a position in this year’s finals series when the Lions welcome Doveton to Toomuc Reserve today. If the Lions win, and Tooradin roll Officer, they will all of a sudden be just one game outside the top five. It’s hard to believe for a team that got rolled by 97 points by Narre Warren last week, but there were some positive signs. For one of the few times this year the Magpies were outplayed at certain stages of the match, the Lions kicking six goals to three in the third quarter in their best passage of football for the season. Steve O’Bryan and Steve Morey continue to lead the way while the likes of Liam Tyrrell and Tyler Guan are becoming much more accustomed to senior footy. The Lions are improving, but young minds wander at times and consistency will have to be built up steadily. The Lions can afford a lapse or two this week, because the young Doves are struggling. Matty Boyd led the Doves into a competitive position against Tooradin last week before the mature bodies of the Seagulls took control in the final quarter. But youngsters like Sam Muirhead, Mitch Cotter, Tom Agar and Beau Anthony would have enjoyed the cut-andthrust of being a real chance at three-quarter time – and will be keen to get back there again. But the Lions will pack too many punches and move one game closer to fifth place with a 27-point victory. And Tooradin-Dalmore and Officer round out proceedings in a flip-of-the-coin job at Westernport Oval. Both teams have just the one win since round three. The Kangaroos forced to work hard for a 23-point victory over Doveton in round six while the Seagulls defeated the same opponent by 56 points last week.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Lachie Gillespie and his Seagulls finally had something to cheer about after an extensive drought that stretched all the way back to round one. Dean Warry played his best game in Seagulls’ colours while experienced types like Michael Hobbs, Luke Mckenna and Jake O’Donnell really stood up when the game was on the line. Win this one and the Seagulls can gain momentum, with a winnable game against Pakenham at Westernport Oval just a week away. Doug Koop and his Kangaroos showed some real grit against Berwick last week, allowing the Wickers to score just four goals after quarter time. But the wheels weren’t ticking over at a great rate at the opposite end of the ground either, with the Kangas managing just two goals for the afternoon. Minus Matty Clarke the Kangas lack any semblance of class up forward. Ben Tivendale and Jesse Longmuir have the class to slot the footy through the big sticks, and might need to do so to get the Kangas across the line. Hopefully Tooradin has a long memory. They were in control of this same contest last year before Officer rallied late to leave Gillespie and his coaching staff crest-fallen in the Westernport Oval coach’s box. It was one of the more iconic images of season 2017 and one the Seagulls will be keen to avoid this time around. It’s the Seagulls by 13 points.

Footy Notes Narre Warren Last week our players wore black armbands to mark the tragic passing of yet another young member of the Narre FNC family, popular past player and great mate of many – Billy Athanasopoulos. Sadly Billy lost his fight for life on 9 June, after an accidental fall. A former Reserves Premiership player, Billy’s zest for life had a positive influence on so many at our club; his charisma was unique. One wonders how much loss and heartache our playing group can endure in one season. But as our Senior captain’s mum, Tammy Quirk posted so succinctly last week – “the way our footballers and netballers stick together; the love and support they show – no one will ever take away. This club is one great family that we are lucky enough to belong to.” Above all else that will get us through. Rest in Peace, Billy. Last Saturday Narre had three good wins against Pakenham. In the Ones, after an even first quarter, Narre flexed its collective muscle to open up a 9-goal halftime lead. Josh Tonna was in rare form and Aaron Wilson (6 goals) was leading up strongly, stretching Pakky’s defence. But the Lions weren’t done yet and turned in a brilliant third term featuring five consecutive goals - and they were back in the game at the last change, However, a spirited threequarter-time address from coach Matt Shinners flicked that intangible switch in his playing group, inspiring a tengoal last quarter from Narre. Josh Tonna, Brad Scalzo, Trent Shinners and Mitch Cox were in everything around the ground; Joel Zietsman impressed in his first senior game for 2018; while Nick and Stewie Scanlon again shared 8 goals between them to complement Wilson’s 6. In the Twos, Narre’s scoring ability was way too good for Pakky’s defence. Daniel Jackson (7 goals) was the star of the show taking two legitimate speccies and several other strong contested marks throughout the match. Mitch Cowan provided good support up forward with 5, and even key defender Hayden Johnson snuck forward for a rare goal. In an even team effort, Paddy Andrews’ mobility and clean disposal stood out in the greasy conditions, while Cam Miller and Tommy Toner got plenty of the footy. The Under 19s was a competitive and entertaining contest. Narre got off to a flyer but Pakenham dug in against our faster stronger bodies to get within 6 goals in the third quarter. Narre steadied for a ten-goal win. Big Max Sheppard established his credentials among the best key forwards in the comp with another bag of six goals. Jack Flannery chimed in with 4. Passages of quick and smooth ball transition through the likes of Dylan Mutimer, Matt Butera, Lachie Benson and Dylan Webber showcased the class of this side which looks ready to challenge allcomers at the business end of the season. Berwick Last week saw 3 strong wins in wet and bulstery conditions. Certainly a good result in front of a full social room as the Past Players day unfolded. Many a brew was consumed as the guys told storys of days gone by. There were plenty of laughs with tales of bravery, match winning performances and impossible goals. I am not sure how much of it was true but it does not really matter, it was a great day. We also had our mates from Gameface there doing interviews. The look of bewilderment on the faces of the past players when they were advised we employed the services of a social media company was gold. Never the less they got involved with about 10 of them participating in interviews. Problem being none of them have Facebook so they wont get the chance to see themselves. Now the news is out that the club is heading to the Yarra Ranges there has been nothing but support for the club. Thank you to those who provided the positive feedback as it has been a tough decision for all involved. Big thank to Pete and the Sneaky Cheese team for meals the other week. When you guys are on, the Thursday night crowd swells. This week we have Beacy away and it wont be an easy day at the office. All teams will need to be at their best to get the win on the board. Footy Notes Beaconsfield Welcome back to Beacy this week end , after a tough week in very cold windy conditions last week vs Cranbourne we hope that the weather is a lot friendlier this week end for us all The 19’s last week had to work hard to get the job done over a spirited and committed Cranbourne 19’s. The game went down to the wire however with 2 minutes to go Ryan slotted a very important game winning goal. Although the boys were not on for the full game they managed to stay strong and get it done The reserves were in for a tough game against a very strong Cranbourne 2s side however at the end of the day Cranny were simply to strong and committed to getting the 4 points The seniors kicked off and it was an arm wrestle for both teams, The second term saw us kick a couple of goals and hold a slight lead, the third Cranbourne kicked a few unanswered goals form excellent positions o the ground, Cranbourne in the end got the job done This week we host our arch rivals Berwick who have had the wood over us for a while now round 1 we showed we were not far off the mark however a few mistakes cost goals late in the game . This week we are confidant we have bridged the gap and we will be in for a show at Holm Park Last week we held our annual club 30 with Jason Ackermanis which was a brilliant night managed by our great bunch of volunteers who pulled it together to make the night a great success Reminder Major raffle tickets are on sale and due to close in coming weeks anyone wanting a ticket please see Geoff McGowan now as tickets are nearly sold out .

Seniors Pakenham vs Narre Warren Today we welcome our valued sponsors, members & supporters to the Den as we take on Doveton. After a competitive 3 quarters against a red-hot Narre Warren, we were simply outclassed in the last to lose by a disappointing 97 points. As hard as the loss was, there were pleasing signs on what this young & dedicated group can do when they work together. Congratulations must also go to our 2 senior debutants in Jarryd Hendrikx & Shaun Duncan who were rewarded for their good form in the reserves.

Best players on the day were Steve O’Bryan, Stephen Morey, Jake Barclay and Jimmy Harrison, while Adam Alberni kicked 3 majors. Once again, many thanks to our loyal supporters & sponsors and we look forward to your continued support this year. Reserves Round 8 we drove down the highway to play Narre Warren. Narre had only lost one game for the year, so we knew we had to play our best football to compete with them. With so many injuries at the club we were on the phone calling players to help. We went in with a full team but were out classed by a great team. Head up boys, your next win is not far away. The Pakenham Football Club would like to thank all our members, life members and sponsors for their ongoing support in 2018. Without you all there would be no club to support. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. PFC Senior Women What a fantastic game against Seaford. The players once again showed their improvement week after week, once again it was evident and on display for all to see. We started off slowly allowing Seaford to take control of the game but at half time the players made a decision that they were going to give their all to get back into the game. We were kicking against a 4 goal breeze in the third quarter and kicked 2 goals to their 1, which was outstanding. In fact our second half we out scored them by a goal. The improvement from each and every one of these players is getting fast tracked by the way they listen at training and get to training to improve their skills and they should be proud of what they’ve achieved so far. Club Notes Coming up – Our Sponsor’s day on 23rd June, where all of our wonderful Sponsors for 2018 are invited to join the Committee, Life members, Netball Club and Junior Club for a special luncheon as a thank you for their support. Cocktail night 7th July – This night was hugely popular last year and from all reports, a great night. Get in touch with Jackson Hillard for more information. Lion tamer day 7th July – A day for our terrific Lion Tamer supporters. Our $10000 draw is coming up on the 14th July. Grab your favourite player and buy your ticket before they are all sold for your chance to win. On the 4th of August, Pakenham Football Club will be doing its part in raising funds to fight MND with a luncheon featuring Rebecca Daniher as guest speaker. $60 per ticket.

Footy Notes Cranbourne

In the wild and windy confines of Casey Fields, last week we hosted Beacy in what promised to be a great day of footy – despite the conditions. The 19s kicked the day off and after we gave Beacy a three goal head start our endeavours changed significantly and we found ourselves clawing our way back in to the game. Being three goals down at the first break, two goals down at the main break and one goal down going in to the last quarter meant we were slowly but surely coming and the last quarter was a seesawing contest. Unfortunately, our decision making coming in to the forwards in the last, kicking with the breeze meant we squandered opportunities, kicking four behind to one goal, going down by eight points. WE proved we are not far off coming close to the unbeaten Beacy side. Best were Cooper, Luca, Murph, Matt Smith, Kyle Nunn and Dela. The twos were next to go and it was really only two solid quarters that gave us a comfortable win. We kicked eight of our nine goals in quarters one and three, registering only two scoring shots in the other two stanzas. The main highlight of course undoubtedly was to see Darbo back out playing after time off from his frightful round one moment. It was great to see him back and he duly got himself in to the game kicking three goals. The best in our 39-point win were Jake Stephens, Richo, Lewy, Haz, Bubble and Branners. The seniors were last to go with a huge focus on how many Holty could kick to edge closer to his 1000th goal. That’s the last you’ll hear of this in this week’s edition as he finished the day with a duck egg! Beacy jumped us a bit kicking with the aid of a breeze to lead by two goals at ¼ time. Our second quarter was something else though, as we took ascendency in the game to rattle on six goals to one to go in to the main break with a 16-point lead. But it was the third quarter that caused us most grief as our star ruckman Micky Boland went down with what looked a serious knee injury. What he wasn’t to know at the time is that his girlfriend, Alanah, had just done her knee playing A Grade netball!! The odds on that happening would be whatever you wanted and we wish both our stars a speedy recovery. (At the time of writing we weren’t sure of the outcomes but we have our fingers crossed.) We did seem a little rattled after this but steadied in the last to come away with a hard-fought 16-point win. Best for us were Oz, Waters, Moz, Zak, Rama and Gards. Get behind all teams today as we face off against our great rivals at Narre in a day where all three games are well and truly up for grabs. A Night of Clairvoyance We have Joanne King, a renowned clairvoyant coming down to our rooms on Friday July 6 commencing at 7pm. The cost is $25 which includes a light supper. For more information or to book, please contact Jan Davies on 0407 882 274. Go Eagles!!

The clash between Doveton and Narre Warren at Robinson Oval on Saturday 30 June is set to be a memorable occasion – with ‘The Long Walk South East 2018’ set to be one of the highlights on the SEFNL calendar. The Long Walk is a charity inspired by former-Essendon champion Michael Long, who 14 years ago walked to Canberra to get the lives of Indigenous people back on the national agenda. Long’s passion and commitment to the cause has seen many events being held around the nation, with The Long Walk South East – driven by Casey Radio 97.7fm sports presenter ‘The Doc’ – growing in stature in this its second year. This year’s event promises to be bigger and more entertaining for families right across the South East. Three games of football will be played, with an Under17’s game between Endeavour Hills and Fountain Gate acting as a curtain-raiser to the reserves and senior games between the Doves and Magpies. The first bounce in the senior game between the traditional rivals will take place at 6pm. A full round of netball, from Under 13s to A Grade, will also take place on the day. There will be a range of family and cultural activities beginning at 12 noon, including a jumping castle and petting zoo for the kids, while an indigenous art exhibition, and traditional face painting, will keep everyone involved in the true spirit of the day. And a strong line up of talent is sure to attract a big crowd and, most importantly, keep them entertained. The Indigenous Hip Hop Crew – fresh off rave reviews after their impressive performance at Federation Square for the ‘Dreamtime’ game – will show off their coolest moves at 3.15pm. Patrons will be entertained by some of Australia’s best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent, with the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Op showcasing their talents in pre-game ceremonies. The McMartins will kick off the musical entertainment, before the headline act, ‘The Cool Rockin’ Daddies’ - fronted by Greg Champion from the Coodabeen Champions – take to the stage at 8pm. And then there’s the walk itself, with Australian Olympian Nova Peris joining other notable identities for the walk to Robinson Oval, which begins at 4.30pm sharp from the Doveton Netball Stadium. Casey Radio 97.7fm will begin broadcasting at 3.30pm and will be across all the festivities, conducting interviews and all the senior football action. Indigenous Round will help raise funds for many charities, with all money raised to be distributed evenly between the Long Walk Foundation and charities associated with the Doveton Football Club. The day is proudly supported by major sponsors, The Long Walk Foundation, Casey Radio and the Doveton FNC, and by partners AFL South East, SEFNL, Narre Warren FNC and the Pakenham Gazette. A champion becomes a legend By David Nagel It was the day a champion footballer from Beaconsfield elevated himself to legend status – not only within his club, but across the length and breadth of the Casey Cardinia Football League. Daniel Mislicki was already a well-respected figure, but his five-goal performance from the midfield enhanced his reputation as a great leader and inspired his team to a 54-point victory over Cranbourne in the 2014 grand final at Edwin Flack Reserve. It was Beaconsfield’s first premiership since 2004 and just its ninth in the 125-year history of the club. There were many heroes for Beaconsfield on the day. Clint Evans joined his father Rod as a premiership coach, champion ruckman Scott Meyer produced a stunning performance to match his God-given talents, while youngsters Thomas Jok and Brandon White breathed new life into a team that had struggled in the early stages of the season. But, amongst all the heroics, the skipper Mislicki was the standout, returning to the premiership dais after a 10year drought. “Unbelievable, it has still hasn’t sunk in, and probably won’t sink in for a while,” he said after the match. “The position we were in at the start of the year, that doesn’t matter now, we’ve done it, it was a tough game, I couldn’t even walk at the end but it’s all worth it now.

I had three of these at 21, and I’m 31 now, we went through some dark times there for a while, but this one is sweet, having to wait so long definitely makes it sweeter.” And what of his best on ground five-goal performance? “It wouldn’t have mattered if I didn’t get a kick, as long as we won the game, it’s an unbelievable feeling. They’re a great team, an unbelievable team, we knew they’d come back in the last quarter, but we got the first clearance, we kicked the first goal and it was just a special feeling. “We’re going to enjoy the next couple of days, that’s for sure.” Evans said the season turned around for his side after a 114-point defeat at the hands of Narre Warren in round 11. “I didn’t even see the end of that game, I walked inside, and I asked the boys what was wrong, was it me, because we beat Berwick the week before then put in a performance like that... something’s not right,” Evans said. “I just let them go away and have a chat about it, left it to them, they came to me on the Tuesday night and said we needed to tweak a few things and ever since then we haven’t lost. I’m going to repeat myself here, but it’s true, the thing I love the most about this year is that it has been player driven. “I’m over the moon as a coach, but the smiles on the players’ faces is what makes it all worthwhile.”

BERWICK 25

Berwick 2015 Four premiership cups - Berwick’s greatest day ever By David Nagel

The Berwick Football Club is more than a century old but the famous old-dark navy blues have never seen a day quite like Saturday 19 September 2015. The Wickers broke a 16-year drought in the seniors, defeating Cranbourne by 30 points at Starling Road, to see Rhys Nisbet join his dad Darryl as a premiership coach of the club. But that was just the beginning of the storylines. The club achieved greatness on that sunny September day, winning all four premierships in the under 18s and 19s, reserves, and finally seniors to complete the ultimate sporting quadrella. The Wickers had been through some tough times in 2015. Past-player and assistant-coach Todd Devine’s 15-yearold son Ethan lost his life-long battle with illness in early May, while the death of past-great and well-respected life member John Callery also hit the club hard. The motivation and hunger was there as the senior side ran onto the Officer Recreation Reserve that day. “We lost some special people throughout the year, but we also had one of the gutsiest wins I’ve seen the club have against Doveton at Berwick,” Nisbet said.

“We also beat Narre Warren four times throughout the year, so we’ve had plenty of highs and it was great to go out and get the rewards we deserved today. “We really deserve this; a lot of people have worked super hard to get to this point and it’s a great feeling right now.” Nisbet said it felt special to join his dad Darryl; one of his best mates Clint ‘Boof’ Evans, and his dad Rod ‘Darkie’ Evans as a senior premiership coach. “It is special, I’m really proud of what dad’s done (pause)…and I’m sure he’s really proud of me,“ he said. “It’s something I’ve been driven to do, I was never the best player but I thought I had enough knowledge to pass on. I learnt everything from him, all the way back to my first game, and my grandfather Des, he taught me a hell of a lot as well so I’ve had a couple of really good teachers. Now I get to join dad, and Boofa and Darkie, and that feels pretty good.” The seniors contest was a game of fluctuating fortunes, with Berwick kicking six unanswered goals, Cranbourne responding with seven of their own in a stunning 20-minute burst, before the Wickers settled in the second half to surge to a famous victory. Lucas Jellyman-Turner won the best-on-ground medal, while star recruits Ben Kearns, Ash Smith, Michael Johnson and Michael Riseley all played leading roles in the victory.

Berwick 2015 The under-18s started the day with a 24-point win over Doveton before the under-19s made it two from two with a 23-point triumph over Cranbourne. The reserves then focussed all the attention on the seniors with a 15-point victory over Narre Warren. “We were the fourth leg of the quaddie – and we were one out in the last leg,“ Nisbet said after the win. “There was a lot of pressure building up on us, but it was good type of pressure and that’s the best quaddie I’ve ever got in my life. It’s a great feeling; the head’s spinning at the moment, but at the end of the day it’s all about the players today, all about the players.” Saturday 19 September 2015 – the Wickers have never seen another day like it.

Netball Preview Magpies focus on a lofty perch By David Nagel Narre Warren can give its 2018 premiership hopes a huge boost this afternoon when the Magpies turn on the porch light for Cranbourne at Kalora Park. The third-placed Magpies are already two games clear of the Eagles in fourth place, so will basically secure a topthree position and a double chance if they can get the choccies today. The Magpies warmed up for the big clash against the Eagles with an impressive win over Pakenham last week. After a week’s break the Magpies came out firing, taking a 12-goal lead to the first change after a stunning 16-4 start to the match. Brit Tyers (GK) and Caitlin Stephens (GD) were in a mean mood at the defensive end of the court while Chloe Phillips (GA) and Jemma Osborne (GS) had the radar switched on in attack. The Magpies were more circumspect after quarter time, outscoring the Lions 36-31, but the damage had been done. Cranbourne started well against Beaconsfield last week, leading 11-10 at quarter time, before Beacy clicked into gear in the second term. Alanah Hardy showed her versatility for Cranny, starting in defence before moving forward, and her output will be a key determining factor against the Magpies. Cranbourne really needs to make a statement against genuine contender – but it won’t be this week…it’s the Magpies to win by six goals. It’s a frightening proposition for the other seven teams in the competition, but Tooradin-Dalmore seems to be getting better and will look to continue that improvement against ROC today. The Seagulls are undefeated but have lost none of their hunger, demolishing Doveton last week in a ruthless display of netball. Leading by 21 goals at half time the Seagulls scored 39 after half time to run away with a 44goal victory. The Seagulls versatility was clear for all to see with Jess Cox, Emma Iacovou, Sara Duncan, Tara Smith and Jess Maher all having a run through the midcourt, while Bec Kinna and Ebony Dolan gave nothing away down back. ROC was also impressive last week, taking Berwick to the cleaners in its biggest win for the season. The 25goal margin was set up by Sara Villiers (GS) and Sarah Castricum (GA) in the second quarter, while Jamilah Ferns played a great game in defence. The Kangaroos have the talent, but the Seagulls are just too strong at the moment and will run out comfortable winners. Pakenham host Doveton in what could be a very interesting game at Toomuc Reserve.

Something catches the attention of Pakenham defenders Lauren Wenn and Jenna Douglas against Narre Warren last Saturday.

The three-game gap between the teams would suggest the Doves are set for victory, but this one could go either way. The Lions have been pretty good in their last two games against Tooradin and Narre Warren, with Lorna Clark, Cath McCowan, Kyra Esler and Taylor Dykstra leading the way. The Lions were jumped by the Magpies last week but showed great commitment to fight the game out. Doveton defenders Mikaela Dakic and Kyla Quinn were under immense pressure against Tooradin last week and will enjoy the drop in intensity. Their efforts, and those of Hayley Stewart, Emily Pupuke and Dani Devlin should ensure a Doves victory – but only just! And Beaconsfield will look to retain bragging rights in the Battle of the Creek against Berwick at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles have bounced back well from a shock defeat at the hands of ROC in round five, winning their last three games in impressive style. The Eagles had the band back together last week with Kaela Hughes, Rylee Nelson and Zoe Mason having great games against Cranbourne. Despite remaining winless, Berwick has really stuck to its guns this year with Morgan Thomas, Jaime Cotter and Kassidy Withers all having a red-hot crack against ROC last week. The Wickers will be eyeing off a round-13 home game against Pakenham as a potential win, but have some tough times ahead before that takes place. The Eagles will win by 20-goals plus.

were still some other great efforts from the other teams on Saturday. Our 15s Red team keep edging closer to their opposition each week, and we’re confident they’ll get a win on the board soon. It was a successful day out for our senior sides, with A, B and C-Grades all having solid victories. After not being overly satisfied with their performance against Pakenham the round prior, the A-Grade girls came out firing and put on a dominate display of netball to win by just over 40 goals. B and C-Grades were both sitting one win under Doveton heading into the round, and both teams went out with purpose and intensity, and got their much-needed wins. It was the top of the table clash in D-Grade, with Doveton sitting first and Tooradin second heading into the game. Unfortunately, our girls were unable to get the win against a strong Doveton side, but they played well and battled it out until the end in a tight game. This week we welcome ROC for our second of three games against them this season. Last time around it was horrendous, wet and cold weather so we’re hoping for some better conditions this week. C-Grade lost by one goal last time the teams met, so the girls are hoping to turn the tables their way this week. Our young gun A-Grade defender Ebony Dolan plays her 50th game in the red and green this week! Ebony has developed into an outstanding netballer over the years and one we’re sure a lot of opposition goalers don’t love coming up against due to her constant pressure and ability to get her hands to everything. She was an integral part of last year’s A-Grade premiership side and is also a great club person, taking on junior coaching roles and helping out wherever she can. Congratulations Ebony and we hope the girls can get a win for your milestone game! Tickets are now on sale for our Annual Formal Night on Saturday 7 July and can be purchased at www.trybooking. com/394042. We’d love to see as many players, parents and supporters there so jump on and get your tickets now! GO SEAGULLS!!

For all you older Cranbourne Football Netball Club supporters, you may remember Luva as the happy go lucky station master at the Cranbourne V-Line Station. RIP. Good luck to all teams today for Round 9 as we take on our hosts for the day; Narre Warren. Go Eagles! Firstly, a big congratulations goes to our youngest Gulls who recorded the club’s first junior wins for the 2018 season on Saturday against Doveton! Both the 13s Red and 13s White teams put together awesome team efforts and played the netball we know they’re capable of, and with that came their first wins for the season. Well done to the players and coaches on getting some well-deserved success and hopefully you can get some more as the season continues. Despite not getting any other junior wins on the day, there

ROC had a successful day out last Saturday making worth braving the arctic conditions. Big celebrations for our D grade who had their first win of the season. Brydie Englenger played her senior debut in B Grade and was awarded the Shanikas award for an amazing best on court performance. With the unlucky streak of injuries amongst the senior group at the moment it’s great knowing we’ve got some incredible juniors to call upon. Thanks Berwick Netball club for hosting. Final call had gone out for chocolate fundraising money to be returned.

Netball Notes Doveton U13 Red: The days starts of so early for our little baby doves – they hang in there and keep trying the whole game, they never drop their heads, we are so proud of their efforts. U13 White: This team of baby doves show so much talent at times, they all try their hardest week in/week out. Their skills aren’t quite up to competitive Saturday netball but if they stick together and keep working hard, their time will come – so proud of their efforts and the comradery they show each other. U15 Red: Day started with only 6 players and therefore we had to call upon one of our very young players (11year old – under 13 player) to come up and play a full game after just playing U13’s. Dakota leapt at the opportunity and smashed it, showing she is a future Doveton champion. The U15 girls all rallied around her and put in a very solid 4 quarters – great efforts girls! U15 White: A pep talk to these girls before the game must have got into their heads, a stunning victory 57-2!! With some movement from their normal positions, we have found another goaler in Grace, what a game she played. Our defensive pressure all over the court was as pleasure to watch, our feeding to the circle was spot on and our ball movement down the court was precise, well done team on a fantastic win! U17 Red: Well Well Well… With only 7 again, we did well. Girls in different positions and enjoying the challenge. Good win – Casper very good!! U17 White: This team is just going from strength to strength, with girls committed to training and arriving early for warm up, this contributed to a huge win this week. They are showing great attitudes on court and are playing very strong, skilled and settled netball. Since taking this team over I have been amazed at their willingness to learn and best of all their great fun and attitudes. D Grade: Well Well Well… Top to the table clash – our girls hitting the court full steam ahead. Great voice and support. Some basic mistakes giving our opponents a chance to stay close. One of the sisters – Alisha dominating in the mid-court. Great win ladies – let’s keep improving! C Grade: Attitudes better, it’s just our execution and processes we need to work on as a whole, it will come – having faith in each other is a huge obstacle we seem to have. Positives from this week, the girls’ ability to recognise there is evident room for improvement and being committed to and excited to work through it. Player of the Match: Charlie Howie. B Grade: Thank you to team members that played out of position this week and big thanks to our fellow doves who stepped up and play for us – greatly appreciated.. Not a comprehensive effort on court like we have come

36

to know however can’t question attitudes or willingness. Tough day on court but still encouraging at this point in the season. A Grade: A very talented bunch of individuals who need to come together to plays as a team… they all know how to play netball and some of most talented prospects within the league play in the team – we just need to bring it all together. Still working our attitudes but saw some great improvements across the court and are hopeful we can continue to build and grow as a team. Best on court: Mikaela

Beaconsfield B GRADE-Beacy travelled to Casey Fields to take on Cranbourne. The team started well, defensive pressure from Caity & Gabby caused turnovers and missed shots. Key to playing well at Cranbourne is to get the ball as close to the ring as possible with the weather affecting our girls shots.Elise put in a galant effort whilst not feeling 100%,forming a great pairing with Mia.Beacy’s 3rd qtr was our best with the introduction of Taylah in at GK. D GRADE-Our D grade girls have been looking forward to this game since we went down to Cranbourne by 1 goal when we met back in Round 2 in those torrential conditions. We were all pumped and ready to play, conditions were windy and cold but we attacked the play with more balance and control.Defence was strong with Tianah,Chelsea and Taylah combining well winning lots of turnovers.Missing one of our captains this week but Sam,Jess and Maddy P were fantastic.Goalers were great, adjusted to the wind well with Maddie K’s smarts playing the team role.Coming back from injury,Shelley is always a great presence on our court. Thanks to Kasey from U17 White’s for filling in,you were awesome and fit into the team well.Awards-Tianah,Shelley and Maddie K. U17 RED-The girls headed to Cranbourne this week to face the top of the ladder team.Beacy had a good start going goal for goal, but Cranbourne put their foot down taking the lead at quarter time.Beacy had flashes of great play but it was Cranbourne too strong who came away with the win. U17 WHITE-We had a slow start taking the first half to warm up,making it very difficult on themselves to maintain a lead in the final quarter.Cranbourne had to make changes throughout the last half to throw different combinations, which credit to them ended up workinggetting over the line by 1 goal. The girls worked hard and I was proud of their efforts, however still a lot to work on in order to play out the whole game with the same intensity and want to win. U15 RED-The windy conditions set a dry court, however took the ball on a tangent on many occasions. When the girls played down one channel of the court with short passes they had greater success.Cranbourne’s pressure had Beacy selecting cross court passes, which were often intercepted. Our defence showed what they were made of,ensuring Cranbourne didn’t have an easy go.

Netball Notes U15 WHITE-A tight game is what Cranbourne gave us.With a slow start and horrible weather conditions,it looked as though the game was not going to be our best. As the game went on we showed determination and perseverance with it goal for goal for the second half. Our errors definitely let us down.We showed how well we can play as a team,we will be taking that away from today as a win for us.Proud of our plays and pressure shown out on court!Thankyou to Sami for coming and helping us out, definitely had a great presence. U13 RED-The girls started strong in trying conditions. They didn’t seem to impact on our goaling, our shooting accuracy was on point. Our pressure was spot on,forcing errors from Cranbourne, resulting in turnovers and the goaling end capitalising on the hard work of the defenders. The girls played a positive game today, communication on court was great and positive. We didn’t let outside factors get to us,which showed in our game and the final result, taking out a strong win. U13 WHITE-In freezing cold weather down at Casey Fields, the girls started well and maintained their intensity throughout the entire game. They adapted to the conditions and followed the instructions given,by coming forward to the ball and having strong hands and passes. The ball flowed effortlessly from end to end, with our defenders Miller,Sam & even Ebony having a go in GK,intercepting and bringing it out smoothly, our midcourters in Tahnee,Ella,Millie and Ebony controlled the midcourt well and our goalers in Ellie & Sienna seemed to have no trouble at all getting it in the ring.Well done girls, awesome team effort and a convincing win!

Berwick 13 White - We came across our toughest game so far this season. ROC came out fighting with good ball movement down the court and awesome shooting. Our leads and passing let us down resulting in our first loss. Proud of the girls for not dropping their heads and never giving up. BOC Lexi Broadley 13 Red - ROC came out hard and we didn’t Some big changes on the court were made to allow the team to lift there heads up and ended up coming on stronger in the second half and smashed it and came away on top with another win to the board. This team are becoming strong, little champions and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds. BOC Delylah Loulanting

15 White - The girls fought for a win today after comming from behind again. Consistency from start to finish is something we will be working on for the next few weeks as well as eliminating silly infringements. Well done girls on this fantastic win over ROC. BOC Cate Anderson for doing the job she was set. The 15 reds had a tough game against ROC. They came across some challenges and put up a great fight with solid passages of play. Unfortunately we went down by a couple of goals however there are always important lessons to take from a loss and the team will come back bigger and better next week. BOC - Emily Terlicher 17 White - After a week off the girls started off slow and had some rough patches throughout the game. To the girls credit once again they kept fighting and displayed some great passages of play. We can take a lot from this weeks game and can look forward to the next game with our heads held high! Special mention to Keely who took the BOC this week, with a fantastic defensive game. The 17reds came back to the winning circle this week having a cracking 3rd quarter to set up the win in the last. Unbelievable efforts across the court every one contributing to a great 1 on 1 defensive game and balanced attacking game. Best on court Sussu Lai D Grade - Although we started slow in the cold they improved every quarter and won the second half. The team is improving every week and with passing and defence becoming stronger I’m sure a win is within sight. Well done girls for your fighting spirit. Janelle (stand in coach) BOC Hinearo TeTano C Grade - A slow start to our game, unfortunately falling back into old habit, causing too many turnovers in the 1/2. We had a lot of making up to do in the second, to the girls credit they kept their heads up and showed great teamwork and determination to not let ROC get away with the win too easily. It was great to see that although we didn’t come away with the win everyone was smiling and in great spirits after the game. Ebony Ellis well done on your first full game out in WD after starting the season with a few niggling injuries and absolutely smashed it! B Grade - Such a disappointing end to a fantastic game. Going in to the last quarter 2 goals up it was ours to lose. The last quarter 9-2 brought a lot of emotion around not Finishing the game. So close. We will train this week more resilience and bouncing back. Great efforts by many players just couldn’t finish as a team. Best on court Lauren Castricum. A Grade- ROC quickly jumped the A grade team with accurate shooting and tough man on man pressure. Socially the team is bonding really well they just need to take this to court. A grade team will need to hit the training track and keep pushing themselves to keep possession and convert.

Netball Notes Narre Warren Despite the icy conditions we racked up an impressive eight wins for the day! All four senior teams remain in the top 4 and most junior teams are well placed! Once again thanks to everyone who volunteered their time. The day can’t run without your help. #buyin2018 #unitedwestand U13 White: Pakenham 23 def NW 13 Today wasn’t quite our day. In cold conditions Pakenham got on top early and we couldn’t bridge the gap after that. We had some great passages of play throughout the game, now our focus will be consistency. BOC: Avani, Micaela, Tahni, Zoey. U13 Red: Pakenham 20 def NW 12 Great start to today’s game girls. The pressure applied throughout the whole court was brilliant, which then flowed into the attack end scoring 6 - 1 in the first and ahead again in the second quarter. Shanae was outstanding. Unfortunately, the second half was lacking in attack which we can improve on for next week at training. U15 White: NW 33 def Pakenham 21 Our girls worked really well as a team this week and as a result came away with a great win against a really tough opponent. Great work girls! U15 Red: NW 26 def Pakenham 16 Another great performance today against Pakenham. Getting better and better every week. Awards to Mikayla, Holly V and Paris, but everyone played a great game. U17 White: NW 38 def Pakenham 37 What a battle against a very good Pakenham team ... we won by a goal in absolute nail biter! Chloe was brilliant in goals, and Amy and Rylee played an awesome defensive game. Another terrific team effort! U17 Red: NW 33 def Pakenham 26 Today the girls were thrown into a few new positions on court which showed just how versatile they are as a team! Wishing Ashleigh Hammmond all the best in her upcoming surgery after doing her ACL a couple of weeks ago. D Grade: NW 47 def Pakenham 27 The girls worked hard today building during every quarter to come away with a good win. We adapted well to combination changes without any hesitations. Great to see Sim back on court. Well done on an impressive team effort. Today’s awards- Nat, Caity , Liv & Georgia. C Grade: NW 43 def Pakenham 20 C Grade like to take their time and build their intensity through the game. Another fabulous team effort and they show their commitment to working for each other and as an entire team when the mad coach put them all out of position to teach them how to adapt. They have matured into a strong group who work as one to meet the team goals and this in turn leads to success on that court. Awards to Taylah Simpson, Zoe Dunkley, Jess Breen, Hayley Rae and Ash Stephenson.

B Grade: NW 45 def Pakenham 35 We started a little flat but the girls worked on each quarter. We saw the defenders step up and rebound to create a few turnovers! Great to see defensive pressure from the midcourt really starting to come into the game! Great work by our goaling end. Awards to Kate, Jaymie, Amy, Maddie M, and Jayde. A Grade: NW 52 def Pakenham 35 Awesome effort by everyone today! We applied strong, full court defensive pressure from the first centre pass making it very hard for Pakenham to penetrate their circle and score. In attack we were strong and controlled. We found great space and fed the ball to our goalers within good shooting range. Our goalers followed on, shooting very accurately in wet, slippery conditions. No individual nominations – what a great unit we were!! Pakenham For Round 9 we celebrate at our club our annual Sponsors and Life Members day. It is a special day at our club and one we look forward to each year, as all three areas of our mighty club being our Senior & Junior football committees together with the netball committee jointly work together to host our annual sponsors and life member’s day. This luncheon is our way of saying thank you and acknowledging these amazing people for their continuing assistance. Without our sponsors and their financial backing we could not provide what we do for our players. Our life members who have given so much of their time and effort to shape the club to what it is today. Heartfelt thanks. We look forward to a wonderful day. We celebrate today a wonderful player milestone with Renee Weaver from C Grade playing her 50th game, congratulations Renee! Enjoy your special day with the club. Proud of your achievement and efforts. As we head into the business end of the season, we have reviewed our performance to date with our coaches and committee. It’s easy from the outside to put labels on clubs, coaches and teams when the focus is purely on the score. But honestly we are all competitive and love to win! What we need to remember always is the heart, passion, determination, resolve, commitment of those trying to do their best for their club and team that is also important

South Eastern Women’s Football By Lachie Ramage Eastern Devils and Seaford continue to set a hot pace at the top of the SEWF Division One ladder after both teams score hard-fought victories last weekend. The Devils started brilliantly against Cranbourne, leading by 32 points at the first change, before the Eagles bounced back and cut the margin to 29 points by the final siren. Shelley Beggs and Georgia Punton slotted two each for the Devils while Alice Nagtzaam was best on for the Eagles. Seaford was also forced to work hard against Beaconsfield. Leading by just four points at half time the Tigers tightened up, kicking 2.8 to no score in the second half to bank their sixth consecutive win. Kaea Tua starred for the Tigers and Vicky Liarakos did likewise for Beacy. In other games, Port Melbourne and Gippsland scored their first wins of the season over Chirnside Park and Endeavour Hills respectively, while St Kilda gave its finals aspirations a huge boost with an important victory over Mornington. The Bulldogs will have to bounce back when they take on Seaford in this week’s match of the day. Tyabb and Cranbourne produced a great game of footy in Division Two with the Yabbies emerging nine-point victors. With Kate Thompson, Kylie Vigliarolo and Mel Hart running riot up forward the Yabbies opened up a 32-point lead at the final change. But the Eagles clawed their way back, kicking 4.0 to 0.1 in the final term with Sam Dowgilmour leading the fightback. Second-placed Seaford has make a huge statement by downing Eastern Devils by 38 points at Mayfield Reserve. Lauren Field was outstanding for the Tigers, booting four goals in a brilliant display up forward. The Tiges kicked four

44

goals to one in the opening term to set up their victory. In other games, Brooke McCurdy kicked two in St Kilda’s 28-point victory over Edi-Asp, while Bass Coast flexed its muscles with a 149-point victory over Warragul. Tayla Stahl-Smith, Kanisha Thomas and Ella Cargill booted four each for the Breakers while Jenna Robertson never gave up for Warragul. Third place goes up for grabs today when Tyabb host the Eastern Devils at Bunguyan Reserve. Hastings and Mornington have continued their dream runs in Division Three with impressive victories over Red Hill and Officer. Zoe Mitchell and Millicent Taylor dominated up forward in the Blues’ 71-point victory over the Hills, while Meaghan Wightman kicked two in the Bulldogs’ 12-point win over an improving Officer. Jas McSweeney was best for the Kangaroos. Jordan Williams and Katie Mitchell played starring roles in Pearcedale’s 25-point victory over Karingal, while Frankston consolidated a top-four position with a 57-point victory over Cerberus/Crib Point. Bec Dixon and Jasmin Hunt worked tirelessly for the Bombers, who had Lindsay Tucker slot three goals up forward. And Seaford has overcome a brave challenge from Pakenham, prevailing by 13 points at Belvedere Reserve. Mel Hitchen-Haw and Michelle Densley booted two each for the Tigers who had Kyra Miller star in defence. Sarah Wragg kicked three for the Lions, who had Chloe Nagel and Ros Cook provide some run and carry and Zoe Loudon continue her great form in the back half.

Chargers don’t stick on the Stingrays The Dandenong Southern Stingrays have triumphed over the Oakleigh Chargers by 55 points in a one-sided affair at Shepley Oval last Saturday. The Stingrays led at every change, taking a slender lead into the first break before kicking into gear in the second quarter and running out the game comfortable winners, 13.17.95 to 6.4.40. With both sides missing a number of key players due to private school and Vic Country/Metro duties, the Stingrays again had the chance to blood a new debutant with Bigoa Nyuon getting his first taste of TAC Cup action. The Stingrays let four very gettable chances go begging early and went into the first break with a 15-point lead. The Rays settled in the second quarter and produced some vintage football. Despite some wayward kicking, the Stingrays found another gear and started hitting their targets kicking five goals to one in the second term to take a 42-point lead to the main break. The Rays kicked out to a 54-point lead at the final change, giving stand-in coach Nic Cox the perfect opportunity to move the magnets around and rest the legs of some star players. The Chargers had the better of the last quarter allowing the Stingrays to take away some valuable lessons away despite the comfortable victory. The whole back six were simply outstanding, holding firm in the face of a dangerous Chargers’ attack with Matt Gahan and Will Hamill leading the way and superbly supported by the straight running of Lachlan Stenning. Campbell Hustwaite had another terrific day out, collecting plenty of disposals and clearances and delivering some bone-crunching tackles. The absence of forward-line guns didn’t seem to hurt the Dandenong attack, with 11 goal kickers and multiple goals to Jarrod Smith and Billy Geurts. Through the middle, the load was spread evenly with relevant new comers getting their chance to drive the engine room, led superbly by speedster’s Matthew Cottrell and Bailey Angwin. Post-match, Cox conceded that the match was not all plain sailing. “We knew Oakleigh were going to challenge us, they always do as they’re well drilled and have plenty of talent,” Cox said. “We had to dig deep throughout the first part of the game, until we got the game on our terms. We got away from them in the second term, then they locked it up a little. In the end it was just an old-fashioned solid game of

46

footy with both clubs getting a better look at the depth at their disposal.” By the end, the game was about as evenly matched as possible – both sides finishing with similar numbers in marks, tackles, hit-outs, kicks and clearances, but Dandenong controlled the football on the outside and had many more inside-50s. The Rays host Greater Western Victorian Rebels at 1pm this Saturday 23 June at Shepley Oval. There will be many changes for this game with all TAC Cup sides having to field a minimum of eleven 17-year-olds for the following two rounds to help AFL recruiters with future trading.
