2017 FINALS SERIES MESSAGE FROM AFL VICTORIA 2017 WORKSAFE AFL VIC COUNTRY GRAND FINAL MESSAGE There is nothing better in Victorian country football, than Grand Final action in September. After a grueling pre-season and tough home and away rounds, spring has arrived and with it comes a sense of optimism that today your team is on the cusp of making history on the most important day of the football calendar. Regardless of whether you’re a player, coach, umpire or supporter with your hopes hinging on the premiership decider, or just an interested onlooker, Grand Final day is always an occasion to savour. I would like to wish all teams who are competing today the best of luck and I hope win, lose or draw, you continue to be involved in country football in 2018 and beyond. While I’m certain there have been many highlights on the field this season, off it, much has been achieved. The introduction of the Community Club Sustainability Program’s Player Payment Framework (PPF) was rolled out across Victoria for its inaugural season. Complementing the Player Points System introduced last year, the PPF will assist in helping narrow the gap over time between high and low spending clubs in order to assist with the rise of escalating player payments in community football. This year we have seen significant growth in the number of females participating in community football. Thank you for your support of the growth in female football. It has been great to see so many females being welcomed into their local community club and we look forward to seeing the continued growth of female football in the future. Representative football was once again a feature for many this season, with Victoria Country taking on the Victorian Amateur Football Association at Frankston Oval. The Energy Safe Under 19s Vic Country squad kept its Big V winning streak alive after narrowly defeating the VAFA by four points, while the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country squad, led by country football product

05 | SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES

and AFL great Danny Frawley, was unable to overcome their metro counterparts, going down by 82 points in the Brian Molony Cup. In addition, the Big V jumper was worn proudly by a host of country Victoria’s top footballers, including the best Under 18 male and female talent in the 2017 NAB AFL and AFLW U18 Championships as well as Vic Country’s best footballers with an intellectual disability in the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival. Arguably one of the biggest highlights on the country football calendar this season was the 2017 WorkSafe Community Championships held in May. For the first time, the top ranked community football leagues went head-to-head at the MCG as a curtain raise to the AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. Season 2017 saw thirty metropolitan and country leagues take part in the carnival across the state, with the Geelong FL edging out Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL by 24-points to be crowned Victoria’s number-one ranked community football competition. Season 2017 also saw the return of the highly successful WorkSafe Games of the Month. Champion footballers Peter Knights, David Parkin and Brent Harvey as well as current AFL stars Bryce Gibbs, Maverick Weller and Ben Brown, embraced the country football atmosphere at eight destinations across the state in a bid to promote farm safety in some of Victoria’s smallest communities. Finally, as the curtain closes on season 2017, I would like to thank the countless club and league volunteers that are the backbone of country football. Without your support our great game just wouldn’t be possible. I hope you have a safe and happy off-season and return just as passionate in 2018. Stephen O’Donohue AFL Victoria Community Football & Development Manager

2017 FINALS SERIES PREVIEW FINALS WEEK 3 CHISHOLM DIVISION 1 Sunday Grand Final – Eastern Devils v St Kilda Sharks Last time they met: 2nd Semi Final Eastern Devils 7.8.50 Def St Kilda Sharks 3.4.22 Form: Eastern Devils WWWW, St Kilda Sharks WLLW It has been a big year for both the Devils and Sharks and congratulation must go to both clubs for reaching the inaugural year of the South Eastern Women’s Football League Division 1 Grand Final. The Devils have had a stellar run this year, not dropping a game all season, and it outs them in the box seat for the favouritism to take out this year’s premiership. They were just the better side in the second semi-final and could keep the game just out of the Sharks reach. St Kilda as the results and ladder suggest have been the number two side all year. The Sharks won’t let this chance go to waste and will be persistent all afternoon, ready to pounce when the Devils may briefly drop concentration. A big game for both clubs it will be interesting to see who will settle their nerves first, and more than likely the first side to do so will control the game and the result at the end. 2017 Premiers: Eastern Devils by 12 points

2017 FINALS SERIES PRESIDENTS MESSAGE EASTERN DEVILS

ST KILDA SHARKS

The Eastern Devils were established in 1999.

What a year it has been for Women’s Football!

We’ve seen many home grounds over the years, but have always come out fighting; stronger than ever. Having fielded 2 sides for many years, this year was an exciting time for the club as we fielded 3 sides for the first time in our history. Joining us this year were a number of players from various backgrounds, including local clubs, interstate recruits and some notable Canadian additions. It has been a very successful year remaining undefeated, however there have been a number of tough games where our girls have had to rise to the occasion. The girls have come together to fight through injuries and hardship to prove that they have the Devil spirit in their hearts. Finals is a completely different ball game, where you start with a clean slate and a new found passion for winning that Premiership Cup. We will fight to the end to make our teammates, coaches, volunteers, family and friends proud!

The Sharks started their season way back in November with a fantastic pre-season getting us fitter than we have ever been! During the preseason we had the privilege of watching many of our fellow teammates make history in the inaugural AFLW. The success of the AFLW season created a huge amount of hype for the sport and for the Sharks, record numbers of new players to the club! With over 100 registered members we easily fielded 3 sides for 2017, an achievement the club is extremely proud of. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all of the Sharks players, Coaches and supporters for all your efforts both on and off the field this year. I’d also like to thank our wonderful sponsors who are critical in making our club the success that it is; Susan Alberti Medical Research, Inkerman Hotel, Footy Almanac, AM Able Steel Fabrications and Squigloo - your support is greatly appreciated! Finally, congratulations to our Division 1 side for making the grand final. As a player in this team I know that we deserve our position in the final and will do everything we can to take the premiership home with us for our teammates, our coach, our wonderful supports and of course Susie the Shark! #refusetolose #3teams1dream Cheers, Tasma Ritchie - President St Kilda Sharks Women’s Football Club

CLUB NOTES The St. Kilda Sharks were formed in 1992 and celebrated our 25th season in 2016, making us one of the oldest women’s clubs in the Victoria. The Sharks have a very proud history which includes Division 2 Premierships in 1997 and 2004, Division 1 Premierships in 1998 and 1999 & Division 1 Reserves Premiership in 2006 and 2014. Over our 25 year history, we have had many players represent Victoria in the Women’s Football National Carnival. Our club & players have received a number of awards from the VWFL for both our on-field & off field performance over the years. In 2017 the Sharks have fielded three sides competing in the VFL, South East Division 1 and Division 2 competitions. This year our Division 1 side have proven their position within the inaugural competition having won 9 home and away matches and finished second on the ladder. Coached by Keryn Ralph, she is having a stellar start to her coaching career, with this being her first season as coach. Keryn’s leadership along with captain and long time Shark Alex Vanderwaal has put the Sharks in a fantastic position coming into our finals campaign. Having suffered a loss in the first final against the Devils, a win against Seaford secured our place in the first ever AFL South East Division 1 Grand Final. The Devils have got the win over us previously, but the Sharks have something to prove and going off previous finals campaigns, have no issue being the underdog.

Whoever their opponent was going to be, it will be a tough game. The Falcons have been relentless in all their games this year the most memorable for them coming close to a loss was against Mornington which resulted in a draw. The determination of the Falcon’s has been inspirational, and they will go into today’s game brimming with confidence as they have all year. Their opponents, Beaconsfield are certainly the underdog tag. Coming from 4th to now being in a Grand Final just goes to that you never know what is going to happen in finals and this game will be no different for the Eagles. Beaconsfield have nothing to lose, except a flag, but no many will expect them to win today which is just how they like it. At the start of the year we started off with a whole new team with lots of ladies just wanting to give footy a go and have fun. Well that decision has now lead to them running out in a grand final where they will have the opportunity to display all of the skills and development over the last year

The facilities at Barry Simon whilst still well short of ideal have seen improvements with the installation of an electronic scoreboard, full size goals posts, new carpet and a fire door in the canteen. Our thanks to Rosalie Crestani and her team at the Casey Council for their support. Not only has the depth of our playing group improved this year, but so too has the support around the club with new committee members and additional volunteers. My thanks to all of the committee members without their efforts the club could not function. Please come along to the AGM at 6.30 pm on 18th October at the Dandenong Club to become involved in the committee and have your input into the club’s success.

Both the inform sides right now, and we couldn’t start the day with a better match. Not since these sides met in round 5, has Tyabb lost any other game. The Yabbies have been clinical about their football and the results show how good they are traveling. Tyabb kept Warragul scoreless last week and will have the Breakers thinking that it won’t be an easy game. Bass Coast have had a fantastic season, to go undefeated is a brilliant effort. The only game left to complete the perfect season is today’s Grand Final. It will be hard to pick who will win today’s game, there will be plenty of momentum shifts through each minute of the game, with a result that may not be determined until the dying seconds of the match. 2017 FINALS SERIES PRESIDENTS MESSAGE BASS COAST BREAKERS

TYABB

The inaugural season of the Bass Coast Breakers reaches its climax today when the Breakers take on Tyabb at Casey Fields in the Grand Final. To have started from scratch and ended up in a Grand Final in the space of 9 months is a massive achievement and great credit to the small team of organisers, fantastic group of players and some wonderful sponsors - The Wonthaggi Club, Bendigo Community Bank San Remo, Inverloch Marine, RACV Resort Inverloch, Cardell Accountants, Onshore Linings, Magic Lands Rubbish Removal, CBXCrossfit, Old School Fitness PT and Southern Ceilings.

Here we are at our first Grand Final for Womens footy what a stellar year for our yabbies, first year in and only loosing one game thus far is a pretty good effort for all involved.

Of the many positives to come out of this first season the bond that has developed within the team is the most outstanding. The girls play for each other with a team first attitude that has seen them become a real force. Their commitment to training and skill development has been the catalyst to massive improvement over the course of the season. Their early success and team spirit has attracted many new players to the fold. They have gone from scratching for players to a point where their numbers are now the envy of many longer established teams.

The club and committee are very proud of your efforts and are pleased that the new girls chose Tyabb for their club, good luck today girls we are all behind you. Doug Taylor President

Today will be a massive challenge against Tyabb. Though we played and beat them earlier in the year they were undermanned on the day and have been in great form in the latter part of the season. The Breakers are as well prepared as they possibly can be. It takes a lot of work and a fair amount of luck to get to a grand final let alone win one. The girls have got there and there is no doubt they will give it their absolute best to get the job done.

CLUB NOTES The Bass Coast Breakers took on Warragul in the second semi final and won their way into a grand final after a hard fought win. The girls had not had a really physical contest for a few weeks and took some time to adjust to finals pressure. Kicking against a strong wind in the first quarter they kicked the first goal containing their opponents to a single goal and were very well placed at quarter time. A four goal to one second quarter helped set up the game. Mollie Bloch was terrific in the ruck and Tayla Stahl-Smith was proving very dangerous anywhere near goal. The Breakers never scored in the third quarter against the wind but still contained Warragul to a single goal and led by eleven points at the final change. The last quarter was hard going for both sides. Ella Angarane used her experience to read the ball and get herself into the right places while Sophie Bolding continued with the run and carry she produced all day. Hannah Mills and Gemma Tschiderer were rock solid in defence and the Breakers kicked away to earn a place in the Grand Final at Casey. Best: Mollie Bloch, Tayla Stahl, Sophie Bolding, Ella Angarane, Hannah Mills, Gemma Tschiderer

Thinking back to the beginning of pre season it’s so amazing that we have come this far. It just started as an idea that gained traction really quickly and all of a sudden we had a team full of amazing woman who were so keen to pull on the tyabb jumper.

Social: The Breakers presentation afternoon will be held on Saturday 23 September at 3pm at the Wonthaggi Club. It would be great to see as many players, supporters, family members and sponsors there to celebrate the season. Entry is $10, dress is semi-formal and finger food will be provided.

Go get em yabbies!! Nip nip

Today we can make history, today we have an opportunity in our first season that some people don’t get in their whole football careers. Whatever happenes the whole club and the supporters are so proud of our woman’s team!
