2017 FINALS SERIES MESSAGE FROM AFL VICTORIA AFL BLIND RECEIVES FUNDING NOD
B
lind and vision-impaired Victorians will have the opportunity to participate in Australian Rules football next season, following VicHealth’s Innovation Challenge funding announcement last week.
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter congratulated AFL Blind and the other winning projects for identifying new opportunities to get more Victorians taking part in physical activity.
AFL Victoria’s inaugural AFL Blind program is one of six projects that have been chosen as part of VicHealth’s $500,000 Innovation Challenge: Sport program, which supports new initiatives that help less active Victorians to take part in sport activities.
“VicHealth is proud to support such exciting and innovative concepts like AFL Blind. We know that being more active is good for the health of all Victorians, however there are certain barriers including age, disability and skill which prevent people getting involved,” Ms Rechter said.
In conjunction with Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria and AFL, AFL Victoria’s AFL Blind project will strive to develop an adapted version of Australian Rules football for the Victorian blind and impaired community.
“We’re excited to be partnering with organisations like AFL Victoria as they trial their programs and get even more Victorians active in new and creative ways.” Blind and vision impaired Victorians keen to be part AFL Victoria FIDA Football & AAA Programs Manager of the first-ever AFL Blind program should contact Tim Tim Nield said VicHealth’s support will help continue AFL Nield at tim.nield@afl.com.au to register their interest. Victoria’s commitment to make Australian Rules football the most accessible sport for all Victorians. “There are approximately 1.1 million Victorians who have a disability, with only 1 in 4 participating in sport and recreation compared to 3 in 4 of the general public, so VicHealth’s funding is extremely important in helping us rectify these figures,” Nield said. “We are excited to work alongside Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria, AFL and key industry experts in this area to help us develop the AFL Blind program which we believe will help increase the physical activity levels of inactive Victorians with disability. “AFL Victoria has a number of disability programs which offer people with disability the opportunity to participate in our great game, and through VicHealth’s support, we will now be able to extend our programs to allow any Victorian with any disability the chance to play Australian Rules football.”

SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
2017 FINALS SERIES CHISHOLM DIVISION 1 PREVIEW South Eastern Women’s Football League – Preview Finals Week 1 Saturday 2nd Semi Final – Eastern Devils v St Kilda Sharks
Sunday 1st Semi Final – Cranbourne v Seaford
Last time they met: Round 12 Eastern Devils 2.2.14 Def St Kilda Sharks 1.5.11
Last time they met: Round 11 Cranbourne 3.0.18 Def Seaford 1.5.11
Form: Eastern Devils WWWB, St Kilda Sharks LWLW
Form: Cranbourne LBWW, Seaford WWWL
Finals football is here and what a way then to have the top two sides do battle for the chance to jump straight into the Grand Final. The Eastern Devils have been the standout team of the competition in the Chisholm Division 1. Yet to drop a game for this season the Devils have always just found a way to win whether it be pretty or ugly, they have got the job done. With the likes of Shae Dale and Georgia McLean who are 1 and 3 on the goal kicking table, it will take some stopping from the Sharks defence.
Big game for both sides today as the curtain on 2017 will close on the loser of today’s game with the victor to move onto the Preliminary Final to tackle either Eastern Devils or St Kilda Sharks.
St Kilda finished 3 games behind the Devils and worrying sign for the Sharks is 2 of those losses have come in the last three weeks. Emily Paterno will sure entertain the crowd when the ball moves into the forward 50, as she sits 2nd on the goal kicking table it might be a shoot-out at either end. Not much separated both sides when they met last time in round 12 when the Devils prevailed by 3 points. Maybe if St Kilda had their kicking boots on that day it may have been a different story. It certainly sets the stage for an epic battle between these two sides, with the ladder leaders Eastern Devils to get the job done again by 15 points.
08| SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES
Cranbourne will be looking to turn around the past few weeks. Before the bye the Eagles won their last two but coming off the bye the went down to 5th placed Knox by 20 points. Seaford have had some different fortunes since their last loss which was at the hands of Cranbourne by 7 points back in round 11. Since then the Tigers have been clinical with their victories and won their last three games which will have them brimming with confidence coming into the finals series. This game will certainly go to the wire. If Cranbourne can start well then it will be a real battle to the last siren, but if Seaford get away to a flying start it’s hard to see Cranbourne coming back to challenge them. Seaford by 12 points.
SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
2017 FINALS SERIES MORNINGTON RACECOURSE DIVISION 2 PREVIEW South Eastern Women’s Football League – Preview Finals Week 1 Saturday 2nd Semi Final – Endeavour Hills v Mornington
Sunday 1st Semi Final – Chirnside Park v Beaconsfield
Last time they met: Round 6 Endeavour Hills 5.8.38 Drew Mornington 5.8.38
Last time they met: Round 8 Chirnside Park 6.4.40 Def Beaconsfield 4.1.25
Form: Endeavour Hills WWWW, Mornington LBWW
Form: Chirnside Park LWWW, Beaconsfield WWLL
When these two sides drew in round 4 everyone thought it was a fitting result, as they were the form sides of the competition. Since then Mornington have suffered two losses while the Falcons have continued to assert their dominance of the competition.
Finals football is a fantastic in the sense that no matter where teams are on the ladder or how they finished, they will always step it up come the business end of the season. Both Chirnside and Beaconsfield will be primed and prepped for Sunday’s hit out at Shepley oval.
Endeavour Hill will be the favourites at this point to take out the flag, with the likes of spearhead Sarah James, who’s kick 24 goals for the season, up and about it will mean the Falcons are the little bit hard to beat.
The Panthers have been in red hot form, despite dropping their last game to ladder leader Endeavour Hills, it has been a solid run into the finals. Chirnside Park run and carry game has certainly lifted them to the next level hence why they are in the business end of the season.
Mornington have probably a more even spread of goal scorers across their team and will be looking to return to some early season form. The Bulldogs will be annoyed they lost last week to Edi-Asp with some missed chances, but will be excited for the challenge of taking on the Falcons. This will be a fantastic display of football to watch, on the lush surface of Shepley oval you can only expect the skills to at a high standard. Not much will separate these two sides with the Falcons to come out on top by 6 points.
09 | SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES
Beaconsfield have had promising last two rounds and will feel they are ready to tackle this finals series head on. Watch out for Shae Frazer in the forward 50 as she has been damaging in front of goal this season kicking 27 to lead the goal kicking in 2017. It was a 15-point win to Chirnside Park when these sides last met in round 8, but this time around the score line will be closer than that. Chirnside Park to win by 3 points.

South Eastern Women’s Football League – Preview Finals Week 1 Saturday 2nd Semi Final – Bass Coast Breakers v Warragul
Sunday 1st Semi Final – Tyabb v Frankston Bombers
Last time they met: yet to verse each other
Last time they met: Round 4 Tyabb 7.13.55 Def Frankston Bombers 2.6.18
Form: Bass Coast WWWW, Warragul WWLW What do you say when the top two teams of the division haven’t even played yet? Well I guess you’d say “I’d like to see that!”. The Breakers have had a stellar season, finishing on top of the ladder undefeated, 4 players that sit in the top ten of the goal kicking table, this are looking good for Bass Coast and they will be eyeing off that place in the big song and dance, that is the Grand Final. The Breakers will go into this finals series as favourites to take the flag but they need to get there first. Warragul have also had an amazing season, only dropping the one game to fellow finalists Tyabb. The Colts will be looking to impose their presence early in the game. Lynette Pattern finished the season with 61 goals to take out the goal kicking. With an average of just over 4 goals a game, it will be a player the Breakers will need to control. Hard to pick who will come out on top in this game, so ladder positions will determine the selection of Bass Coast to win by 4 points.
11 | SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES
Form: Tyabb WWWW, Frankston Bombers LWWW The Yabbies and Bombers go head to head in the 1st Semi Final for the Mornington Racecourse Development Division. Tyabb have certainly been running home with a wet sail. The last 4 on the trot and even the scalp Warragul in that mix the Yabbies will be raring to go, as they will fancy themselves as a premiership contender. Kelly Adamson kicked 51 goals for the season and a pivotal part of the Yabbies line up and will be a barometer on how they are traveling on the day. Frankston’s season has been nothing to shy away from. The Bombers have won 11 games and will be looking forward to the upcoming challenge. There is nothing to lose for Frankston so they will be going in guns blazing, and trying to rattle Tyabb from the outset. Huge day for both sides, but Tyabb will come out victors to take on the Colts or Breakers next week.

2017 FINALS SERIES CLUB NOTES EASTERN DEVILS
ST KILDA SHARKS
The Eastern Devils were established in 1999.
The St. Kilda City Sharks were formed in 1992 and celebrated our 25th season in 2016, making us one of the oldest women’s clubs in the Victoria.
We’ve seen many home grounds over the years, but have always come out fighting; stronger than ever. Having fielded 2 sides for many years, this year was an exciting time for the club as we fielded 3 sides for the first time in our history. Joining us this year were a number of players from various backgrounds, including local clubs, interstate recruits and some notable Canadian additions. It has been a very successful year remaining undefeated, however there have been a number of tough games where our girls have had to rise to the occasion. The girls have come together to fight through injuries and hardship to prove that they have the Devil spirit in their hearts. Finals is a completely different ball game, where you start with a clean slate and a new found passion for winning that Premiership Cup. We will fight to the end to make our teammates, coaches, volunteers, family and friends proud!
20 | SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES
The Sharks have a very proud history which includes Division 2 Premierships in 1997 and 2004, Division 1 Premierships in 1998 and 1999 & Division 1 Reserves Premiership in 2006 and 2014. Over our 25 year history, we have had many players represent Victoria in the Women’s Football National Carnival. Our club & players have received a number of awards from the VWFL for both our on-field & off field performance over the years. In 2017 the Sharks have fielded three sides competing in the VFL, South East Division 1 and Division 2 competitions. This year our Division 1 side have proven their position within the inaugural competition having won 9 home and away matches and finished second on the ladder. Coached by Keryn Ralph, she is having a stellar start to her coaching career, with this being her first season as coach. Keryn’s leadership along with captain and long time Shark Alex Vanderwaal has put the Sharks in a fantastic position coming into finals. The Devils have got the win in the two home and away games this season, but the Sharks have something to prove and going off previous finals campaigns, have no issue being the underdog.
SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
2017 FINALS SERIES CLUB NOTES CRANBOURNE EAGLES
SEAFORD TIGERS
It’s been a good year for the Cranbourne Division 1 womens team. We started pre-season early, and it paid off with a fitter, skilled side.
The Seaford women had a strong start to the season with 120plus talented women attending training. Plagued by injuries this year the depth of the playing squad showed as numbers have stepped up week in, week out, across all teams.
The girls gelled well very early and it shows in the way they play and train. They play for each other as a team, which as a coach, is exactly what we aim for. We finished the season with 7 wins & 5 losses. The games we lost, we didn’t lose by much and were always in with a chance. A better bounce or a straighter kick could have made the difference between a win or a loss, and a higher position on the ladder at the end of the season. Finishing third is a great achievement. With finals now upon us, the girls have been training hard and are expecting to be very competative. As their coach, it’s been an absolute honour on my behalf to be part of the team. Brendan ‘Boomer’ Birmingham
Ranging in age from 18- 45 there is a perfect mix of experience and youth which creates a vibrant and exciting environment. Seaford FNC has fantastic support and fielding 4 womens’ teams along with 3 mens’ is an exercise in logistical excellence at times. With our highest team being VFL, it was the first year we fielded teams in the South East Women’s league, with a team in each division. The division one side started the season with a win and then had a slight lull and has come home strong. The team has a great culture and lives our motto ‘got your back’. The girls have worked hard on their attacking game along with perfecting their skills. Each and every female athlete has worked hard on and off the track and with some good planning and execution which will pay dividends when it counts. We have faced fierce competition and have thoroughly enjoyed playing against such quality opposition- some will certainly be players of the future. We are excited to have created the opportunity to play finals and are looking forward to being part of history over the next 3 weeks; we will need to play our way through. Regardless of what happens from here we are proud of our club, our culture and our colours. #Retteson3 #gotyourback #sistersforlife

2017 FINALS SERIES CLUB NOTES ENDEAVOUR HILLS FALCONS
MORNINGTON BULDOGS
Being a part of the inaugural women’s SEWF season has been a fantastic success, and the EHSFC congratulates all teams involved in the 2017 season. A big thankyou from Endeavour Hills to the SEWF and the team involved in getting this new league up and running.
The Mornington FNC is very excited to have its Senior Women’s team playing finals in only its second year of football.
2017 saw the Falcons represented with 47 players across two teams and two leagues, with 17 new players to the club and 12 players entirely new to football. Milestones for our senior women’s team include celebrating 200 games for Rebecca Sadler, 50 games for Amy Campbell, as well as participating in Pride Round as a club. Our senior women’s team has finished the home and away season on the top of the ladder, which is an exciting reward for the effort the players, coaches and volunteers have put in this year. Thank you to senior coach Marcus Klienert, reserves coach Scot Anderson, assistant coaches Stacey Howe and Ashlee Ladson, team managers Josh Downes and Rebecca Smith, players, volunteers and supporters for being a part of our success this year.
After a successful year in 2016, when only one team was fielded, the Club has fielded two teams in 2017, the Seniors in Division 2 and the Reserves in the Development League. Although the Reserves did not make finals they have had a very successful year with many girls being able to play football, some for the very first time. Our Seniors playing in a higher Division have performed extremely well finishing second at the end of the Home and Away season. The future for the Club looks very bright for its Women’s teams as the average age of the Senior playing group is only 23 with the majority being under 22. We congratulate every player selected to represent the Mornington FNC in the 2017 finals series and wish the team every success. Go Doggies.
Now to show the world what we can do in the finals. Go the FALCONS.

2017 FINALS SERIES CLUB NOTES CHIRNSIDE PARK PANTHERS
BEACONSFIELD
Chirnside Park entered the AFL South East Women’s Division 2 competition for the first time in 2017 after the disbandment of the VWFL in favour of moving clubs out to their local Leagues.
Congratulations to our ladies for making the finals campaign in 2017. This Sunday is a great opportunity to help promote women’s footy and we are exceptionally proud of the growth of women’s football within our region.
With Coach Meghan “Skip” Stephens, Captain Carly Robson leading the senior team and relishing the opportunity to play some opponents from previous years, 2017 also brought fresh challenges of playing some teams for the first time. After an eye opening loss in round 1 the playing group have knuckled down, trained hard and continue to impress on the field, showing discipline and structure throughout the remaining games. The Panthers are ready to roar this finals series and show everyone just why our Club has such a great reputation as a leader of women’s football in the East! We would like to thank our Club Committee, Life Members, Volunteers, Supporters and Sponsors as without them we would be unable to continue to strive for success on the playing field.
In our second year of football the growth is fantastic and we are proud to continue the promotion and opportunities for our ladies. We thank our club for the support and especially our committees who work exceptionally hard to allow the opportunities to continue. We thank our sponsors, volunteers and supporters for the continued support this year and we wish our ladies all the best for their finals campaign. Good luck ladies and well done on an excellent year. Beaconsfield Football Club

2017 FINALS SERIES CLUB NOTES BASS COAST BREAKERS
WARRAGUL COLTS
The Bass Coast Breakers have had an incredible start to Women’s Football. Creating a new football team from scratch is no mean feat and it needs at least one person to champion the cause. In the case of the Breakers Ella Angarane has worked tirelessly to establish the team. Her work along with major sponsors the Wonthaggi Club, Bendigo Community Bank San Remo District and Inverloch Marine helped get the team established off field.
The Warragul Colts are in their second year of women’s AFL where they have worked hard as a club and a team to get to finals in 2017.
Getting a coach was a challenge and appointing Steve Kenny to the position has been critical to the team’s development. Steve added great enthusiasm to the mix and a strong work ethic that the girls quickly embraced. His basic principles of work hard, play for each other and have fun has seen the side go from strength to strength. The team’s objective for its first year was to create the opportunity for women and girls in and around Bass Coast to play football and hopefully be competitive. While they have achieved that with spades their biggest achievement has been to develop a very strong bond and culture that hopefully will help them get through the next couple of weeks of finals. Whatever the outcome rest assured they will give 100% to each other and the team. Go Breakers.
24 | SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S 2017 FINALS SERIES
The Colts were required to change coaches mid way through 2016 and were lucky enough to bring Jason Mitchell as head coach of the senior team who was able to bring his experience as a player to the women, giving them the development they required in a big pre-season and during the year. Most of the team for 2017 have never played football in their lives but every girl as worked hard to improve their skill and their enthusiasm has been second to none. The Colts have been hit hard with injuries to key players during the year some of which will return during the finals to bolster the side. The Colts women only lost one game for the season and will be looking to advance in the finals series having never played Bass Coast during the home and away season. Congratulations girls and a huge thank you to all the volunteers and support staff that made this team possible and awesome effort. GO COLTS!

FRANKSTON BOMBERS
What a fantastic season thus far.
After a solid season we know we are going into this final series as underdogs.
From November till now who would have thought we would be were we are! Countless training sessions, lots of practice matches, 14 rounds of footy and now the finals.
Most of our group have not played football before and have committed to training, each other and the Frankston Bombers Football Netball club without question.
Thank you so much to all the people who had a hand in making this happen.
This team will play for each other our club and leave nothing on the field.
While the girls did the work on the field it’s the volunteers and sponsors who keep the cogs turning.
Whatever the outcome these girls have made Bomber history and will pave the way for women on the peninsula to play whatever sport they choose.
We will give our absolute everything. Go Yabbies Nip Nip!
