About Us When AFN was first founded by Jack and John Sherman in 2001, their goal was to create a modest, family run, regional lender to support the local California community. As other lenders began growing beyond capacity along with the housing bubble, AFN remained small, focusing on manageable organic growth. After the market crash in 2007, we continued to be a strong presence in the mortgage industry, steadily expanding our licensing. By selecting the right partners, our growth has continued to be both steady and successful with AFN now licensed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia (DC), and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and funding more than $13 Billion per year in markets across the country. Unlike other companies, whose volume levels are tied to the interest rate environment, AFN’s volume is primarily tied to successful partnering with new branches in new markets. By starting small and growing organically—even through the housing bubble—in just the past few years, we have more than tripled our number of employees.

Matalka began his career in the mortgage industry as a voracious loan officer and ev olved into a hi gh level executive, currently serving as a division President at American Financial Network, Inc. (“AFN”) a Top 100 Mortgage Companies in America. During his first few years in his early twenties, Mike became one of the top producing loan officers in the country, closing several million dollars a month in loan production. Over his tenure as a loan officer, he closed over a billion dollars in personal loan production. These results can be attributed to a fierce work ethic and drive, an inexhaustible store of energy, having a deep knowledge of products and of the mortgage landscape and always maintaining a selfless commitment to serving customers. In early 2000, Mike pursued the endeavor of opening up his own mortgage company. He grew this company from 1 employee (himself), to a National Mortgage Banker having over 200 employees licensed in 38 states with multiple brick and mortar facilities achieving an annual loan volume of over $2 billion. Results like these don’t go by unnoticed; Mike was recognized in CEO and Business First magazines for team building, loan production, salesmanship and intensive sales training programs, marketing, innovative technology integration, and efficient workflows. With over 23 years in the industry to date, Mike not only navigated through the great economic disasters of our time, but figured out a way to transform himself into an invaluable talent and an elite leader. Within his current role with AFN, Mike presides as Division President over multiple locations as he works out of the Blacklick Branch in the City of Columbus, OH (now the #1 branch in consumer direct lending out of AFN’s 200+ offices).

He leads with originality, intensity, and concentration which are a rare combination in this industry. Mike personally developed sales training methodologies which he coaches to his team. He manages to consistently disrupt the mortgage industry and stay ahead of his competition with a keen ability to adopt, and even pioneer modern technology. As an inspirational and obsessed motivator, Mike has developed the ability to garner the ultimate performance from his team. He has instilled a culture of achievement that fosters togetherness, competition, accountability, freedom, loyalty, extreme customer service and massive growth. A culture like this coupled with Mike’s intensity ensures all of these successes. With a door always open and a desk always approachable, Mike has the ability to view things differently and to draw from many perspectives. No matter the person’s title, when talking to Mike, each voice heard carries a significant and equal weight. He is a passionate believer that when his customers WIN, his people WIN. Being in the same industry for all of his professional life has allowed Mike to have a deep understanding of every facet of the mortgage business. From capital markets to marketing, sales, processing, underwriting, and closing, Mike exhibits a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the residential home financing industry.
