who police the police? “Addressing Current & Historical Realties Affecting Our Community”
PRINCESS NEVAEH WADE By: Dr. Stacey Jones-Reed

PRIDE
We hear the words “objective,” “non-bias,” and “acceptance,” but how many of us are really living the truths we speak? We preach and protest for freedom of speech and freedom to love, but how many of us truly – deep down inside – support others’ lifestyles and opinions? How many of us say we accept certain choices of another person -- as long as it does not affect our own homes or family members. You may have many gay friends and co-workers and outwardly support them, but how would you really feel if your child came and said the words to you, “Mom and Dad, I’m gay.” Gay Pride is not just a “month” of recognition, it is every day and in this era of social justice, it is not just about race. The rights of gay people are also front and center. In order to move forward in this country, we have to open up and be honest with ourselves and take a look at the
man in the mirror. Ask yourself, “are YOU the person who is really in the closet?” In today’s culture, there is no greater fear than to be labeled. We’re not referring to just any kind of label, we’re talking about labels that end careers and warrant a collective shun from today’s “progressive” culture. Terms such as homophobe, racist, misogynist, ableist, etc. can often make people feel as though they are not able to express their thoughts and opinions. Phrases and questions can be taken out of context and turned into something completely different from its original intentions. On one hand, while this era of political correctness can seem overbearing, it is the result of people and communities wanting to be respected, recognized, and emancipated from the oppressive forces that have Pride cont’d page 3 kept these marginalized
Her list is simple, wanting basic things that many of us take for granted daily. She wants to decorate her room, eat nachos and get her nails done. Not too much to ask, but extremely difficult when you are fighting for your life. Nevaeh Wade, 14, has suffered from Lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition, for years. Nevaeh and her family were recently told that her Lupus has advanced to where it is affecting multiple organs. Nevaeh’s Mom, Eco Wade, says her daughter now has brain inflammation, leaky heart valves, fluid in her lung as well as kidney disease. She’s also diabetic. Doctors told the family that no further treatment would be curative, and the focus is now more on treating her symptoms. Instead of thinking about the news the doctors delivered, however, Nevaeh is finding ways to “live her best life” and her loved ones are helping her do it. Nevaeh wrote her bucket list and her “village” went to work, reaching out to business and community leaders who could make it all happen. Houston judge, the Honorable Wanda Adams, temporarily gave up her seat on the bench to allow the teenager to be a judge for a day. The Last Measure of Devotion On June 12, Texas Gubernatorial candidate Beto Orourke made the case for his candidacy and saving the fragile democracy following the insurrectionist attempt to overturn a legitimate presidential election on January 6. The former El Paso Texas congressional representative put forth an alternative vision to the perspective and policies of Governor Greg Abbot and his “turn back the clock” and “restrict voting” policies. If you have traveled south on MLK boulevard beyond 610, you will notice intersecting streets named after hallowed and gruesome battle sites in the Pacific during WWII. Rapido, Imo Jima, Battan and Okinawa were part of an archipelago of islands that were literally “fire and brimstone.” These islands have their place in history because Americans
gave their “last measure of devotion.” This memorable phrase is part of the legacy of the defeat of slavery and saving of the nation. President Lincoln gave a 15-minute speech at Gettysburg and concluded with that phrase. At Finnigan Park, in the heart of historic Fifth Ward, Texas, Beto said that history demanded that he stands firmly with the soldiers who left ports in Texas for Normandy and Imo Jima. Beto explained that there was too much blood and sacrifice in the fields for any response other than rock opposition to the neo-confederates and insurrectionists. According to BETO, his conviction for public service flows from the “last measure of devotion” by countless forgotten American boys and girls. Beto mentioned that he was in this fight because of Medgar Evers’ assassination and Fannie Lou Hamer’s struggles for full voting rights. Beto suggested that strong democracy for all is the best way to ensure the interests of the dead, unborn and living patriots. Medgar Evers was a young NAACP field secretary. During
WWII, he risked his life by volunteering for the US Army and storming the shores of Normandy. In the ultimate twist of irony, he returned home to fight for rights that he had defended only to be killed by a white supremacist. Beto unapologetically said, Medgar is “why I fight.” Beto captioned his speech by talking about the person who made the saying famous, “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer. She was the child of sharecroppers and she and her husband had eleven children in the segregated land of the free. Working with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) she helped organize Freedom Summer 64 and led the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in a challenge to the segregated state party at the convention. Beto unapologetically said, “I fall within the Hamer tradition, and she represents why I fight.” During his run for the United Senate, he visited all 254 counties in Texas. After the Finnigan Park rally,

There Is No Pride In Sin EDITOR’S NOTE: This editorial is the opinion of the author. These are not the views or opinions of Af r i can-Ame r i can News&Issues, which remains objective and allows freedom of speech. It has rightly been said that “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before the fall.” The secular motto is: “Pride goes before the fall.” False pride is a lie. Moreover, the beginning of sin is a lie, and the devil is the author of lies. He told Eve the first lie that she and Adam had the same power as God, and God did not want them to have this knowledge. No doubt about it, all have sinned, and this is why King David a man after God’s own heart declared: “For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.” If an individual says he or she has no sin, they lie and the truth is not in them. Therefore, we
should ask and diligently seek forgiveness of our sins from God. America, know this sin is lawlessness, and this is why laws should be grounded in the Divine Lawgiver, GOD. There are no alternative facts concerning what is sin, because the truth is the truth, and a lie is a lie. Gay pride month is a lie. Homosexuality is a bold-face-lie, because it is an abomination to the procreation will of God: Sodom and Gomorrah. There are no alternative facts: male is male and female is female. Hence, the order of God’s society is based upon family structure; male and female, and from the divine union of marriage, children. God is the author of the four-fold foundation of the universe. Unfortunately, too many Americans have gotten caught-up in themselves that is maximizing the pleasure principle, and consequently, saying Lord, Lord and running with the devil. However, God warns US concerning selfdeception: “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Turn-

History Through Pride cont’d communities silent, him kissing another man. Many or “in the closet.” felt it was pushing hypersexuality The Lens On the other hand, the era of Priscilla Graham political correctness has served as a tool for self-righteousness and herd mentality, which is a mentality that influences peers to adopt certain perspectives based on an emotional, rat her t han r at i ona l, b asis. Political correctness has greatly impacted the Black community, and depending on who you ask, the impact has either been good or bad. For the Black LGBTQ+ community, PC, representation in media, and an overall greater recognition and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ has been a source of liberation for many who are afraid of living their truth. For some other Black people, the acceptance and display of LGBTQ+ lifestyles are seen as an “agenda” against Black masculinity, Black children, and the Black community as a whole. NBA superstar Dwayne Wade and wife Gabrielle Union have received backlash for their decision to publicize their support of Wade’s biological teen daughter (born male), who has come out as transgender. Many feel the Wades should have kept their family business private, or “in the closet,” where many people are hiding their inner biases. “Remember, your black queer children are an extension of you. When you hurt them, you hurt yourself. When you hate them, you hate yourself. And when you honor them, you honor yourself,” said Kaleb Elijah, Black Trans activist and owner of Lake and Prosper. “So, let us not remain impartial in our revolution for equality as a race. You can’t include us because we are Black yet exclude us because we are queer.” A most recent example of how displays of gay affections have sparked debate and controversy in the Black community is the BET awards that aired last weekend. Artist Lil Nas X performed a steamy routine that ended with
and a “gay agenda” on Black viewers, however, the overtly sexual performance of rapper DaBaby’s female dancer barely drew any criticism. Is it because DaBaby is heterosexual? Absolutely. Bias can lead us to do, say, and think in hypocritical ways. What should have been a conversation about hypersexuality in today’s culture became criticism specifically targeted at a gay performer that did nothing more than any other performer at the BET Awards. “We are often made to believe that perception is everything, however, the experiences and narrative of Black LGBTQ+ folks in Texas are far removed from the “gay agenda” many see created by media. Bias plays a huge role in the many disparities Black queer individuals face daily throughout media, school, health care systems, and community. It really comes down to the lack of representation,” said Verniss McFarland III, Executive Director/Founder, The Mahogany Project Inc. McFarland stresses we have bigger issues for which we should be advocating. “If there was a ‘gay agenda’ our main goal would not include Lil Nas X kissing another male on the BET Awards,” he said. “Our focus would be to increase the life expectancy of Black women of transgender experience beyond 25 years of age here in Texas, decrease HIV contact among Black gay men from the projected 1 in every 2 people ratio, and working to end gay and trans panic defense which is still on the books in 44 states.” Bias and ignorance are leading our Black LGBTQ+ youth to be abused. Just last week, a 12-year-old Black queer boy from Atlanta was in a viral video that contained him being hit and verbally humiliated, with his attackers etching the word “GAY” into his hair.

BILL COSBY IS OUT By: AANI Staff
Bill Cosby’s 2018 sexual assault conviction was vacated on Wednesday due to a technicality. Cosby was freed and this unexpected turn in the case led to outrage from sexual assault survivors and their supporters. Lisa Bloom, the attorney of three women who accused Cosby of assault, made a tweet stating, “He is not released because he is innocent. He is re-
leased because a prosecutor promised him years ago that he would not be brought to justice, without even making a deal for him to do time.” The main reason for Cosby’s release was an agreement with a previous prosecutor that Cosby would not be charged if he gave a self-incriminating testimony. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the agreement should have been honored under the prosecutor of Cosby’s 2018 case, and that breaking the agreement was a violation of Cosby’s due process rights.
Cosby was first arrested for sexual misconduct in 2015 during the #MeToo Movement. In his 2018 retrial, he was charged for aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand in 2004, and sentenced to a three to 10-year sentence. Justice David Wecht wrote in the majority opinion that Cosby “must be discharged, and any future prosecution on these particular charges must be barred,” meaning he can’t face trial again in this case, essentially blocking any recourse for his accusers. - AANI

JEFE DE POLICÍA DE HOUSTON SE DISCULPA PÚBLICAMENTE Por: N.L. Preston

Well women will definitely not be HIDDEN FIGURES behind space exploration anymore! That’s because NASA has promoted two women as directors of the Johnson Space Center in Houston and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.Proudly, one of
them - Vanessa Wyche is making history as the first woman and first person of color in her new role. Wyche, an African American, will take the reins at JSC and Janet Petro will lead KSC as they prepare for the Artemis 1 launch to the moon scheduled for later this year. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said both women are exceptional leaders who will help propel NASA forward as we venture farther out into the cosmos than ever before. “It’s an incredible time at NASA, and with Vanessa and Janet leading the Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers, NASA will embark on a new era of space exploration,” Nelson said. Before being named acting director on May 3, Wyche had served as deputy director of JSC
since August 2018. Before that, the 31-year NASA veteran held other key leadership positions to include: assistant and deputy director of Johnson; director of the Exploration Integration and Science Directorate, flight manager of several missions of the retired Space Shuttle Program, executive officer in the Office of the NASA Administrator, and led additional center-level technical and program organizations. Before joining NASA in 1989, Wyche worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C. Wyche is a native of South Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Bioengineering from Clemson University. In recognition of her contributions to the engineering profession she was inducted into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and
Scientists at Clemson University in 2019. Wyche has received many prestigious awards including two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals, two NASA Achievement Medals, and is a “Women at NASA” awardee. She’s been recognized as a national “Women Worth Watching” honoree by Profiles in Diversity Journal, an “Inspiring Woman from South Carolina” by Coastal Carolina University. She is a current fellow of the International Women’s Forum, Wyche is married to George Wyche Jr. Esq, and has one son, George Wyche III. eternal spiritual truths by making God out of a lie! It is not about Civil Rights. Individuals have God given free-will-choices to sin or not sin. However, choices have consequences: good or bad. Because: “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ: that everyone may receive the
things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” Children are our future. Consequently, we need holiness and wholesomeness in our family environments and not profaning. Our children deserve opportunities to be trained in spiritually healthy nucle-
ar families, because: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Moreover, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor of the Lord.” (Proverbs 18: 22). Selah. - AANI

Fossil legislators and the governor have refused to expand Medicaid to cover low –income citizens. Our neighbor state, Louisiana, via a Democratic governor has expanded Medicaid. Texas is like Louisiana in that the health metrics are abominable. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and maternal mortality disproportionality affects people of color and low-income people. There has been a substantial drop in the uninsured in Louisiana and greater access to quality health care. None of this happens unless your party controls the governor’s seat and the Statehouse. The last time that I checked, Hermann Hospital provided more indigent care than Ben Taub or any other provider. Much of the unfunded liabilities will be eventually picked up by taxpayers - meaning you and I. The message is not debatable, in my opinion. Not only for affordable housing, childcare, and energy costs, we need change. As President Joe Biden says, when the Affordable Care Act passed, this is a “BFD.” Austin must undergo more than a face lift. For Black well-being, high quality lives, for meaningful Black futures, we must harness all our energies and resources to save our democracy, and this means voting intelligently.
