Temple Priests have major problems MARIO SALAS

African-American News&Issues

The modern day “Temple Priests,” as the mega-pastors have come to be known, are constantly finding themselves in the middle of trouble. A coupld of years ago, Victoria Osteen, the wife of mega-pastor Joel Osteen, was fined Victoria Osteen $5,000 (later reduced to $3000) by the FAA although last week, was found “not guility” in civil court, for apparently taking on an air of arrogance against airline workers who were ordered around as if they were her play things. According to press reports, Victoria was busted and charged with interfering with a crew member. There is no denying the fine over the incident which started in the first class section of a Continental Airlines flight over a tiny spot on her seat slightly bigger than the size of a quarter. The Osteens paid the fine in order to put the incident behind them. Paying the fine was no an admission of guilt. Being of such opulent wealth it

seems that Osteen got beside herself and thought she was so important that she could push her way into the cockpit to complain about a small spot. It seems that the humbleness of Christ was far away from her mind. With Lakewood church having a sizable number of AfricanAmericans, it was even cruder for Victoria to indicate that she did not want to deal with the Black flight attendants. According to the AP, she wanted to deal only with the White flight attendant. What is the problem here? One mega-Temple Priest after another is falling apart. It stands to reason when you drift away from the true teachings of Christ, you begin to think of yourself as some “messiah.” Mrs. Osteen should have been arrested and charged with a felony for trying to bum rushes the cabin door of the pilot. This is what would have happened to anyone else. Many pastors are more concerned with wealth and power, big houses, planes, helicopters, VIP status, and the like, while claiming they are “blessed” because they have all of these material possessions. They are allowed to turn churches into businesses. What a shame and a sham! I am certain that Jesus would have thrown these material minded pastors and their arrogant wives out of the temple if he were alive today. Big money, big cars, big shoes, big robes, big everything is the order of the day in many of these churches. But what can you expect from the rich and famous? I don’t question the palace priests’ belief in God, but I do question their motives when they live these extravagant lifestyles. What happened to living the simple life? What happened to teaching by example? Someone who lives the life of a king can hardly tell any else how to live, especially when such arrogance is shown. Last year, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Ohio), who is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee started an investigation into the finances of several well-known TV pastors who earn millions of dollars—yet pay no taxes. The inquiry is part of Grassley’s long-standing interest in makingsure tax-exempt organizations are accountable to donors. “I’m following up on complaints from the public and news coverage regardSee PRIESTS page 6

Inasmuch as African-American News&Issues has long been a reliable resource (on Internet search engines as well as the Houston Public Library), the celebration of Eva Lee MullinsHodges’s long, blessed and highly favored life on August 30, 2008 at Augustana Lutheran Church, 2001 Wheeler Avenue will be duly noted in the annals of history for future generations. Pastor Paul Schairer officiated an order of service that included: Ira B. Scott Sr., Raymond Booker, Carl W. Scott Sr., and Ellis May, III, who said farewell to Eva, who was born September 9, 1918 in Quitman, Mississippi to Louie and Cora Lee Dixon Mullins. Sadly, she lost her parents at a young age. But thanks to her loving grandparents, Ran and Mary Montgomery Mullins, Eva and her brother James were reared in Starkville, Mississippi (Settled after the Choctaw inhabitants of Oktibbeha County surrendered their claims to land in the area in the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830). However, Eva, who accepted

Poli-tricks’ confuse Olympics’ message

President George Bush and Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin became enstranged bedfellows at Beijing Olympics, after Russia invaded Georgia. BUD JOHNSON

African-American News&Issues

The United States boycotted the 1960 Summer Olympics to protest the 1979 Soviet war in Afghanistan. Consequently, President George W. Bush was in somewhat of a political Catch-22 when he was pressed to boycott the Beijing Olympics. Not so much because Bush is largely responsible for the current war that’s ongoing in 2008 Afghanistan, as it is that it would be hypocritical to chastise political China for violation of human rights, while at a time corporate America is selling the nation’s economic soul to corporate China. Dare I also mention the further irony of the fact that greed driven “poli-tricks” have made the USA and Russian “strange bedfellows?” Then again, Russia’s wanton attack on the sovereign nation of Georgia exacerbates an already tenuous relationship between the two self-destructing nations. Meanwhile, African-American News&

Issues (Black America’s strongest editorial voice that speaks with an uncompromised Black perspective), would be remiss not to explain how “poli-tricks” confuse the Olympics’ message. Thus, we defer to USA Today’s synopsis: “After tonight’s opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics dazzles the world, the Games will morph for many viewers into a titanic battle between the United States and China for the prize of prizes: Which country will capture the most medals? Not that the Olympic Games are supposed to be about national pride over individual and team achievement. But the reality is that they often are. “At times — most recently when the U.S. and Soviet Union were locked in fierce competition to prove the superiority of capitalism or communism — the Olympics take on an added symbolism. So it is today. For all that the Olympics are billed as China’s comingout party into the world, they are also about whether China’s emerggomery Matthews. After blossoming into a beautiful, young woman, Eva met and married the late Richard T. Hodges in Rockford on December 22, 1953. Later, she moved to Chicago to attend Nursing School, where she received her LVN degree. She worked as a private duty nurse in Chicago for over 40 years. While living in Chicago, she was very active at Christ The Mediator Lutheran Church. She was a member for over 50 years and worked on numerous committees and community outreach missions. Eva was a loving and devoted wife and caregiver for her husband until his death in 1988. After 50 years in Chicago, she moved to Houston to reside with her beloved, goddaughter niece, Dawana Matthews Lewis-Scott and her husband, Carl Scott and son Theron Lewis. The Scotts give special thanks to caregiver Aminata Bright, whose patience and love made Eva’s final days joyous. Eva, was preceded in death by her family members and spe-

ing system, a blend of capitalism and political repression, will prove such a powerful model that it will seriously challenge U.S. and Western-style democracy. These Games are a perfect metaphor for China’s emerging competitiveness in areas beyond athletics. For centuries, it was focused on keeping the world out. Not anymore. Beijing is aggressively engaged in the world, in ways that hold lessons for Americans who’ve grown doubtful about their nation’s ability to solve problems and achieve great goals.” Illegal immigration woes aside, according to David Walker, who audits the federal government’s books as the U.S. comptroller general, China is winning gold for Team Communism. “I really do not believe the American people have a real idea as to where we are and where we’re headed, and what the potential implications are for the country if we don’t start making some tough decisions soon,” Walker said during an AP interview. n angry reader who apparently didn’t read African American News&Issues’ August 6/12-2008 edition, but later visited our Web site at www.aframnews. com, decided to give our publication a litmus test. It seems that she had been blindsided by something that was reported only in our newspaper. Perhaps you, like her (she also called our office, therefore we know she was in her own vernacular “An Angry Black Woman” who supports Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee), missed that edition and is unaware that The Breakfast Klub’s Marcus Davis, will challenge the 18th Congressional District’s incumbent as a Democratic writein candidate. We Must Understand, the politically-astute “angry Black woman” was upset over the fact that none of the other media (she depended on for her major source of information) had reported what could be a pivotal moment in Black Houston’s politics. “How can something like this happen in such a low-key way?” the reader asked in her email’s preface. She then concluded, “I’m putting my little two-cents in this mess, but I doubt if it’s printed because I see where lack of space limits letters to the editor.” Surely, we can’t refute that salient fact. Objectivity notwithstanding, albeit we defy conventional journalism, but since our mission is to find uniquely different ways to report all news without fear or favor, from a Black perspective, we dare to insert J. realize that hype is designed to beat your own drum, so I won’t even try to convince you I’m not promoting the African-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston’s monthly (each first Thursday) Business Networking Luncheon, at the Beulah Ann Shepard Building, 6112 Wheatley. Even so, I’m sure that if you asked the “Lunch Bunch” that broke bread with State Rep. Harold V. Dutton Jr., on August 2, 2008, they would assure you that you missed some very candid, but crucial insight into how our children are being miseducated. I’m not just saying that because I’m chairman of the Chamber. I’m saying it, because every concerned parent should’ve been there. In fact, the audience not only should’ve been filled with parents (with school-age kids), but every concerned citizen would’ve been edified by Dutton, who delivered a very informal, but tell it like it is speech. Especially those who consider themselves political activists, and/or community leaders. In addition, nobody has more up close and personal knowledge about “The State of Texas’ Education” than Dutton, who spoke from his heart, rather than a prepared text. Dutton, who represents northeast Houston’s District 142, currently chairs the Committee on Juvenile Justice & Family Issues, and is on the House Committee on Public Education, the Select Committee on Higher & Public Education Finance and the Operation & Management of the Texas Youth Commission committee. But what’s more important to me is that

he feels our pain. His own children attend Houston (HISD) Schools in the ‘hood. Furthermore, Dutton is a “Fifth Ward, Texas” native, whose roots began in the Kelly Courts. After graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School and he earned a BBA in Accounting at Texas Southern, and later got his law degree from TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Even so, I like the fact that he first put his bucket down in his own community by working at the Julia C. Hester House and became CEO of the legendary Fifth Ward institution that he still works tirelessly for. I also like that Dutton quit a six figure job to serve his inner-city community, insofar as he left a job with Conoco Inc., where he held management positions in corporate planning and economic analysis to become a public servant. After leaving Conoco, Dutton became President of Four Star Broadcasting with the assistance of the late Congressman Mickey Leland. He was granted an FCC license to operate TV-67, an independent UHF-TV station, which began airing in the Houston area in early 1986. For his service to the community, Representative Dutton was cited as an Outstanding Young Man of America. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, a 32nd Degree Mason and is serving his twelfth term in the Texas House of Representatives. Dutton, definitely has clout, because he’s on the House Democratic Caucus, the Steering Committee of the House Research Organization, and was elected Chairman of the 25-member Har-

double-edged, political vendetta by back-room dealers using people’s enthusiastic love for Obama and political naivety to attack Sheila Jackson Lee,” she opines. “Over the years, Sheila Jackson Lee’s hardwork, popularity and high visibility has engendered the jealousy of less-accessible, less productive socalled community leaders. Now they want to use her endorsement of Hillary Clinton in the Primaries as an excuse to work behind the scenes to use innocent faces to help them feed at the political trough. Never mind that Sheila Jackson Lee is already doing more for Barack Obama than they can do for him themselves. Never mind that Sheila Jackson Lee has often single-handedly fought fights for working-class Blacks before it was ‘fashionable.’ “She has always fought for justice reform, fighting poverty, and helping minority contractors. Never mind that some of the ‘new’ faces only recently cared to bother learning about legislation, community services or good government. This wouldn’t be the 1st time the Black community got ‘played’ with catchy slogans about ‘change.’ But this would be one of the WORST times to make the community suffer because of cliques, cronies, puppeteers and a gullible, uninformed electorate.” Believe it, or not, according to our personal poll, a consensus of politically astute, conscious Black folks agree with J.T.’s common sense logic. Even so, we must amend her statement, because that’s not only what time it is the Black community, but throughout Greater Houston’s Democratic Zip Codes.

Bud Johnson: The Old African Warrior

oebeit I’ve been erased from The TSU Three’s history that I helped create, I cherish my relationship with Justin Jordan. In fact, I advised him to distance himself from me once Black political eunuchs (that didn’t respond to his plight until the mainstream media was forced to stop supporting Dr. Priscilla Slade) embraced him. For real, Channel 26 gave her a forum to relegate the original “TSU Two,” Justin and William Hudson (Oliver Brown, the reluctant Musketeer, made three later), as misguided students, and all other media followed suit. She, in fact, deviously promised to forgive the youngsters for their folly. Hey, I know you’d rather believe the mainstream media’s version. But, alas, it’s my job to challenge misconceptions, because that’s how lies get started. Mayhaps, folks with selective memories have forgotten that Slade’s political cronies dissed The TSU Three publicly, after Justin was grudgingly given a forum on KCOH radio. Yet, the youngsters are now being hailed as heroes for toppling “Queen Prissy’s Dynasty.” Hence, I’m saying, straight up, the invalid report that The TSU Three’s activity exposed Slade’s ongoing malfeasance is a damn lie. Even so, “igno-ranting” Black folks that love to embellish and spread lies don’t feel me. Nevertheless, African-American News&Issues had been reporting her transgressions since Justin and William were in high school. For real, check our August

2002 archives at www.aframnews.com. Then again, you can explore the TSU scandal’s timeline in the Chronicle’s archives, or at the library. What happened to Slade—as you should recall— was an entirely different situation. Come on pray with me brothers and sisters. You know Slade’s woes started when a “catty” TSU trustee got jealous of the eloquence of her palatial Memorial enclave abode, and Black folks got hung-up on her $9,000 bed. Then again, since I’ve known Justin since he was a 16year-old high school junior, I know he ain’t about to refute the expanded role he and his cohorts played in the Slade saga. Hey, I’m the one that advised Justin how to play the mainstream media for his benefit, because the pub would look good on his political resume, or enhance a future book’s sales. Square business, I applaud the young warriors. Even if they ain’t gonna share that $540,000 judgment (they’ll never get) with me. Hello, Rep. Sylvester Turner! So I expect the mainstream media to perpetuate their lie, and my gullible, brain dead brothers and sisters will regurgitate their stuff as gospel. Mayhaps, I should stop here and warn you to queue up The Twilight Zone theme, because I sho’ nuff must drift into The Outer Limits of blaming and shaming “igno-ranting” adults I heard denigrating a 22-year-old sister on KCOH (1430 AM) radio, after she admonished her elders for summarily playing the race card. We Must Understand, one of the main reasons so much of Willie Lynch’s (real or imagined) letter still resonates in 2008 Black America, is because descendants of slaves are gullible enough to depend on descendants of slave owners’ lines of communication for their major source of information. Denial aside, if one is capable of thinking critically about our slave -pathology, they must conclude that far too many political naïve Black folks allow the mainstream media to think for them. Then again, woebeit we focus on the Black community per se, be assured that propaganda, and/or misinformation is, indeed, a double-edged sword that also (directly or indirectly) negatively impacts White folks, and “Others” too. In essence, a bias, double-standard media is evil in high places intellectual Weapon of Mass Destruction that’s used to divide and confuse the entire populace. More succinctly, woebeit poor government hurts the have nots, much more than the haves, bad politics rains on everybody. Thus, even if those with economic umbrellas don’t get soaked, they get wet enough to be uncomfortable. Need we analogize that we (citizens of good consciences) are all in this storm together? Even so, this is a pivotal moment in America’s political history. Accordingly, if we allow the mainstream media’s double-edge sword of propaganda flood our apathetic minds-- and keep us from electing “Change We Can Believe In,” sans a democratic umbrella on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 --we’re doomed to drown in our own tears. standing, I almost flipped when the host challenged the young lady, who was persistent enough to call the following day to defend her totally rational perspective of the Victoria Osteen controversy. When she suggested that Victoria could’ve targeted the Black stewardess for many reasons that had little to do with race, he rebutted a totally invalid premise. Michael Harris, who often opens his show reading from Houston’s only daily newspaper, igno-ranted, “Did you read the article?” The White stewardess testified that Victoria appeared to play the race card. Damn, when have invalid newspaper articles, written by clueless reporters become an authority for truth? Then again, I’m sure the Chronicle reporter was as strapped for space as I am, so I’ll just cut to the chase. I was delighted when the young sister defended her premises as if she were one of Dr. Thomas Freeman’s fiery, self-confident debaters. For sure, she was anointed an old African warrior/griot’s princess forthwith. Meanwhile, Critical Thinking 101 classes are now in session. Dr. Freeman taught me (in Logic 131), that one must explore every rational possibility to reach a logical conclusion. Accordingly, if one jumps to a conclusion, after reading a bias newspaper, one is dumb enough to believe that the media is gospel. Consequently, the inane host (obviously unaware that racist is a fighting word for wannabe liberal White folks) really blew my mind when he asked, “If she settled with the airlines to avoid a hassle, why didn’t she pay off the stewardess?” Duhhhhhhh. I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from?

“As a society, Americans are on track this year to spend $680 billion more on foreign goods such as Chinese-made clothes, Japanesemade cars and Scandinavian cell phones than overseas buyers do on American goods. The crush of arriving, Asian-made products recently spurred the Port of Los Angeles to switch to 24-hour operations. “At the same time, the government provides more services to the public than it can afford to — and goes into debt to cover the cost. Other nations actually purchase that debt, in the form of U.S. Treasury bonds and notes. Those bonds have increasingly been snapped up not just by private investors but by foreign banks. Japanese investors hold the most U.S. debt, but China has been buying more than any other country in recent months. The biggest trade deficit is with China, too, at $162 billion. Japan is next, at $75 billion. DUTTON-from Page 2

passing a bill that allows exoffenders to regain their right to vote after successful completion of their sentence. And Dutton certainly practices what he preaches, since when he regaled the Lunch Bunch about registering felons on TDCJ’s deathrow to vote, he introduced Charlie “Slim” Burton, a colorful ex-felon that works for him. Dutton, whose greatest asset is his common sense Black perspective, decided that the ex-felons problem wasn’t finding jobs. Instead, it was finding employers willing to hire them. So, he flipped the script, and had a very resourceful and streetwise, but political savvy Slim to solicit employers to come into the ‘hood for a Job Fair at the Fifth Ward Multi-Center on Sept. 27, 2008. For more information, call (832) 207-6905. Meanwhile, I’m hoping that other public officials follow Dutton’s lead and get serious about helping ex-felons by finding employers that will hire ex-felons, who must have work to stay in the free world. Meanwhile, Dutton candidly spoke about the state’s government. He didn’t bite his lip when he called the Texas Education Agency a useless bureaucracy. If not part of a conspiracy to miseducte our kids. And that opened the door for North Forest ISD’s Board of Trustee’s VP Allen Provost, who like many other public servants (having a problem with the system) has learned that our networking luncheon offers a forum that ultimately connects with African-American

In a very real sense, the U.S. economy is dependent on the central banks of Japan, China and other nations to invest in U.S. Treasuries and keep American interest rates down. The low rates here keep American consumers buying imported goods.” For sure, that’s why China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang had no shame in his game when he rebuked Bush’s condemnations of his nation’s human rights violations. “The Chinese government puts people first, and is dedicated to maintaining and promoting its citizens basic rights and freedom,” Gang said in response to Bush’s criticism. “Chinese citizens have freedom of religion. These are indisputable facts. China advocates discussions on differing views on human rights and religions on ‘a basis of mutual respect and equality.’ We firmly oppose any words or acts that interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, using human rights and

African-American News&Issues • Texas • August 20-26, 2008 • 3 religion.” Sadly, the Chinese resonates with a cashier and mother of three, who responded to an AP/Ipsos poll with the lament:” We’re stealing from our children’s future and our grandchildren’s future. “We’re led off on this belief that we should buy, buy, and buy. Everyone needs a big house, everyone needs a new car every two years. We’re spending all this money on that, and we’re not saving anything.” Perhaps, Black America should have cause to pause and ponder whether, or not, China is more tolerant of its tired, huddled masses than the land of the free. Especially if one recalls the excerpt from President Bush’s 2004 inaugural speech (formally used in our editorial mast), that bemoaned: “And our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time.” God Bless America.

News&Issues, that not only sponsors the luncheons but is the only media that covers the most significant Black controlled organizations in the Greater Houston area. No brag, just fact. There are no punches pulled at the Chamber’s luncheon, because the speaker knows I’m coming up behind him. Even so, Dutton didn’t get nothing but an amen from me, because he shares my ideas about child being educated in their own community. He also added a little humor when recalled a discussion with the TEA and HISD when they targeted schools in his district to close. “I asked them whether or not the school building failed?” Dutton said. He then explained where he was coming from, when politicized educators decide to close low performing schools, in underserved neighborhoods, rather than infusing them with better teachers, and/or students as the late Franklin Wesley forced them to do at Booker T. Washington. He and I also agreed that Texas’s schools should teach Spanish in the lower grades, rather than making teaching immigrants English, a political issue that divides and confuses the minority community. He joked, “I took three foreign languages in school, and did better in all of them than I did in my English classes.” He was alluding to TEA’s misconception that immigrants are literate in their own language, therefore they only had to learn to read and write English. That certainly isn’t the case. He also believes that if you teach children their own languages at a lower grade, they automatically learn English as well. To make a long story short (enough to have space to salute the Chamber’s matriarch Beulah Shepard), let’s cut to the chase. Shepard, whose name graces the Chamber’s building, is recovering—at 89—from a debilitating stroke, but still has her wits, and thoroughly enjoyed the love that the Lunch Bunch showered on her before I closed the luncheon with remarks. As usual the Chamber members, including President Carmen Watkins, did an outstanding job to make the event a success. I was very pleased to see our regular supporters, e.g., Center Point, Comcast, HCCS, Lone Star-Carver, CPA Rodrick Dow, and many others in the house. Especially, Zakee A. Rashid, VP of Comcast’s Community Relations, and our City Councilman Jarvis Johnson. I would be remiss not to warn you to RSVP early for our Thursday, September 4, 2008 business networking luncheon, because vacation is over, schools are back in session and our regular sponsors will be back in force to greet Lone Star College’s new president, Steve Head, who will be our keynote speaker.
