The significance of African American News&Issues’ unique Black History feature (sponsored by Shirley Ann’s Black Arts & Kollectibles Showroom, 6130 Wheatley), is relevant when we offer a complimentary memoriam to the family and love ones of a true history maker, who has been overlooked by chroniclers of descendants of slaves’ contributions to their nation. Thus, we proudly salute Howard Gordon, who proudly history during World War II, although his accomplishments went virtually unheralded until the celebration of his life at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 4000 Sumpter Street, on June 9, 2007. Father Lowell Case, S. S. munity located in St. Martin Parish, which gave Howard a birthright that positioned him to make history. In 1923, Howard’s parents became a part of The Great Migration, and joined the wave of Louisianans who moved to Houston, Texas’ Fifth Ward community and founded what became known as “Frenchtown.” The family prospered and Howard, being eager to learn, took full advantage of the HISD schools and became

English as the official language) to bring about lasting world “peace.” Conspiracy theorists see a sinister motive in the fact that Rhodes founded the Rhodes scholarship as a global brotherhood of future leaders. Lionel Curtis, a Rhodes disciple, later founded the Rhodes-Milner Round Table Groups in 1909, which led to the establishment of the British-based Royal Institute for International Affairs in 1919 and the U.S.-based Council on Foreign Relations in 1921. Inexplicably, President Gerald Ford concluded his Oct. 24, 1975, “Declaration of Interdependence,” by saying, “We must join with others to bring forth a new world order....Narrow notions of national sovereignty must not be permitted to curtail that obligation.” In present form, this can be traced to the collapse of the Soviet Union and President George H.W. Bush’s Sept. 11, 1990, NWO speech. In it he described the United States’ objectives for post-cold-war cooperation with the former Soviet Union, using the phrase “new world order.” Skull & Crossbones notwithstanding, there’s no denying that George W’s rise to power (from a baseball a proud grad of Phillis Wheatley High School. After high school, he continued to the military. History records that while in the military during World War II, Howard happened to speak a version of French that was used in Cecilia, while an officer was walking close by. The officer immediately, after hearing Howard speak, recommended him to the company commander who was in dire need of a translator. Howard was most likely one of the first Wheatley grads to become a translator for the US Army. However, his mind wasn’t on making history. Instead his immediate goal was to woo a beautiful young lady named Elizabeth Arceneaux, who he had met before he left for his tour of duty. Fortunately, she agreed to correspond with him, and a romance blossomed. As soon as he returned from the war, the two love birds decided to make their love official on October 11, 1944 and were married for 62 years. During his marriage Howard, who worked at Stewart and Stevenson for 38 years, participated in

mogul to president, and his flawed re-election following a preempted strike on Iraq), certainly gives credence to the NWO conspiracy. Hence, African-American News&Issues (Black America’s strongest editorial voice), as usual must speak from an uncompromised Black perspective, insofar as many made in America Africans still believe that it was essential for Bush to finish what his father started in Iraq, and/or the oil rich middle eastern nations. Especially when they factor England’s Tony Blair’s role into Rhode’s equation. Thus, we must explore the NWO that was introduced to them in a 1970’s edition of Muhammad Speaks, when the Honorable Elijah Muhammad warned America that oil would one day wreak havoc on our privileged lifestyles in the land of the free. Accordingly, one has cause to pause and ponder if oil truly is the NWO’s weapon of mass destruction? Conspiracy, or not, nothing has negatively impacted Americans more than skyrocketing gas prices. Undeniably, inflated oil prices trickle down to inflate prices of basic necessities of life, liberSee WMD page 3

activities like becoming a founding member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, and taking trips to the beach with his children. Howard also loved sports, and became a die-hard Rockets fan, but basketball had to take a back seat when it came to barbequing with the family. Along with his five children, Howard was also able to enjoy six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Howard will always be remembered for his courage and will to succeed. He leaves behind: his loving wife, Elizabeth; children, Frances Whitaker, Phillip Gordon, David Gordon, Annette Brock, and Anthony Gordon; grandchildren, Lydia Brock, Allyson Brock, Stephen Whitaker, Anissa Gordon, Phillip Gordon, Jr., and Cecily Gordon; great grandchildren, Phillip Gordon III, Patrick Gordon, Myles Gordon Smith, and Marley GordonSmith; sibling, Nora Bowman; a host of nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Howard is going home to be with his parents, and his brother Robert, and sister, Ann. TX-1

here is no shame in my game when it comes to being pro Black, therefore Sen. Barack Obama has my unconditional support because he’s a Black man (with fewer character flaws that any of the other presidential candidates), but I still have empathy for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, if only because I understand her win at any cost attitude. Self-aggrandizement notwithstanding, those familiar with my community activism know where I’m coming from, so I won’t dwell on it. But, suffice it to say, been there. Done that. Meanwhile, the tenor of e-mails (from history illiterate supporters of Texas Southern University President John Rudley) gives me the impression that our detractors ire has more to do with discrediting African-American News&Issues’s common sense Black perspectives than logic. Connecting the dots aside, for over a decade we’ve been explaining that, if one fails to include history in deductive reasoning, ongoing issues become isolated incidents. Accordingly, we not only report all news without fear or favor as a free press mandates, but we tell it like it is, because if we don’t tell it, it won’t be told. And if it’s not recorded, it can’t be regarded. In the interim, I invite you to access our archives at www. aframnews.com and peruse articles that predate mainstream media reports by years. Perish the thought it’s about outdoing other media, or being able to tell our friends and foes that we told you so. It’s about having an informed public that will be able to ask informed questions when new

t should be obvious to thoughtful people, not to mention welleducated made in America Africans’ (anointed, appointed, selected, and real, or imagined leaders), memorials are, in essence, history. Nevertheless, the editor of African -American News&Issues’ unique Black History 24-7-365 is Everyday feature, is often criticized, or even chastised by readers who fail to grasp the concept of using obituaries-- of ordinary descendants of slaves-- who were born before 1930. Thus, many take it personal when we don’t use their relative’s funeral program (in the coveted space at the bottom of our front page) forthwith. We Must Understand, an inability to objectively grasp a concept, is why mankind’s biggest problem has always been a failure to communicate. Yet, it’s a safe bet that supposedly intelligent people reading this editorial have misconstrued what we’re saying simply because they can’t separate a newspaper’s business from petty, personal b.s. Accordingly, they’re crafting an angry e-mail, or have their cell phones in their hands as we speak. If you’re wondering where we’re coming from, perhaps, you don’t know the history of Memorial Day. Then again, when it comes to honoring soldiers that gave their lives for their country, civil rights heroes don’t make the cut. Denial notwithstanding, many Black Americans have no shame in their game when they consider Memorial Day a “White thing.”

public servants introduce themselves with the same old, tired, “igno-ranting” political rhetoric that their predecessors espoused. And that’s how it is, whether we tell it like it is, or not. Accordingly, we don’t need a crystal ball, or prophetic foresight to know that Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas is history. The man has become a liability for the Republican Party. The handwriting is on the wall, and although the mainstream media don’t interpret it for their readers, it’s interesting than the “Off The Kuff” blog that can be accessed from the Houston Chronicle’s Web site. Naturally there’s a disclaimer disavowing Charles Kuffer’s opinions. Yet, it’s more interesting that on May 1, 2008 the blog revealed: “Unlike the DA race and the County Judge race, both of which feature candidates that have a number of similarities, the race for Harris County Sheriff has two contenders with vast differences. Incumbent Sheriff Tommy Thomas has been around forever, while his Democratic opponent, Adrian Garcia, is a part of the new generation in county politics. In style and substance, it’s the good old boy versus the new kid. “This race also has the clearest roadmap for a challenger to wage his campaign, as the incumbent’s record has a lot of targets at which to aim. While most Democrats running will be talking in broader and more general terms about a change of direction, Garcia can home in on a bunch of specifics from Thomas’s career.”

For sure, they relish a day off from work, or any excuse to fire up the barbecue pit and “throw-down” with family and friends. This is especially true for disenfranchised denizens trapped in underserved, crime and drug-infested urban jungles (indigenous to the land of the free), who blame the Iraq war for making their already miserable existence, even more miserable. Then again, history does, indeed, record that Memorable Day is a White thing. (FYI: Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of former Union soldiers and sailors - the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) - established Decoration Day. It was to be a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day. The Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, and designated as the last Monday in May. –About. com.) Meanwhile, there’s a preponderance of evidence that suggests that militant Black soldiers’ lives aren’t valued as much as their White counterparts who sacrificed

Bud Johnson: The Old African Warrior

oebeit I wanted to pay homage to my mentor Robert Powell who named me the African warrior, I must defer to an edited (to fit) cop’s e-mail: “Mr. Johnson, I’m not usually the type of person to take the time out to e-mail an editor about an opinion that’s voiced in a newspaper. But your article about police officers (“Cops Gone Wild”), and specifically Black police officers is a slap in the face to anyone that puts on the uniform. As a Black officer, or “house n_” as you so eloquently put it, I am on the front lines every day fighting this war on crime. It’s a war that happening right beneath our noses and the public has little knowledge of. “I am faced with the reality that there are many people out there that would love to see me dead simply because of the profession that I chose. My affiliation with my department does not dictate my personality nor does it make me who I am. It’s simply a job, nothing more, nothing less. I’m sorry to disappoint you but there is no ‘code of silence’ among officers. It just isn’t there anymore. It may have been at one time but those days are long gone and will never come back. The ‘good ‘ol boys’ are retiring and dying off and you are now getting a younger, more trained, highly-educated police force. Almost every officer I know has a bachelor’s degree and about half of them also have a master’s degree. Although

the media portrays us all as dumb cops, but we are nothing of the sort. The repercussions are just too high to allow yourself to participate in any misconduct. “Why would I risk losing my job just to cover other officers’ backs? If I see wrong, I call it as such, and the guys I work with do the same. In a war you begin to take on a certain attitude when you know that you are in an environment where your enemies are out to take your life. Your awareness is heightened; you are constantly evaluating and then re-evaluating situations that a normal person would not think twice about. I have been witness to some of the most evil things that humans can do to each other. It’s amazing how departments all across the country are hurting to fill jobs. Yet we are still understaffed and over worked. Everybody wants to talk about the police but don’t want to be the police. I grew up in Acres Homes, and went to Aldine High School, graduating 28 out of 475 in my class. “I graduated from UH, and will be entering the Thurgood Marshall School of Law this fall. Throughout my life I avoided drugs and gangs, kept a job and paid my way through school. Many of my friends did the same things I did. After having said that I think I can emphatically say that it’s pretty easy to avoid being arrested for a crime. It’s pretty easy to avoid getting a beat down by the police. I can even say that it

The blog further says Thomas is under fire for incidents, “Including but not limited to: The Ibarra lawsuit, and the millions of dollars it has cost the county; the newly-instituted email deletion policy, which was announced at a time when former DA Chuck Rosenthal’s emails were being closely examined. The continuing problem of jail overcrowd-

ing, which is partly to blame for the jails failing to meet state standards. A high rate of inmate deaths going back numerous years. Admitted negligence in allowing a death row inmate to escape. Trigger-happy deputies. And a sweetheart deal for Sheriff Thomas on his ranch house construction, which was designed by the guy whose architecture firm

their lives fighting for freedom and equality for their people. Hence, following that logic, Black America should ponder a special Memorial Day for our civil, and/or human rights soldiers. We Must Understand, if Andrew Hacker’s book (Two Nations Black and White: Separate, Hostile, Unequal) has merit, it should behoove politicallyastute, Black and proud leaders to take care of our own dead. Especially, those who sacrificed their lives in the civil rights wars that are still going on. Black History Month aside, African-American News&Issues has lamented for years that “The Uncle Tom Bible,” that only become relevant for Black children in February, should ideally be exposed to Black History-illiterate White kids. On the other hand, Black America’s elders should teach our children about their heroic soldiers , i.e., Elijah Muhammad, Denmark Veasey, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, at al, who are despised by mainstream America, the same as we despise those who fought for the Confederacy. Self-aggrandizement aside, lest we forget, Black publishers and reporters were considered “Soldiers without swords,” therefore they should be included in the Black nation’s Memorial Day. After all, a memorial is actually history. Thus, if America is, indeed, two nations, Black America’s real soldiers fight a much different war than those who’re honored on mainstream America’s Memorial Day.

is even easier to avoid getting shot by the police. Millions of people go through life every day with little to no interaction with law enforcement. I spent my whole youth without ever coming into contact with a police officer. I’m sure by now you think that I’m some ‘whitewashed’ house Negro. You can think whatever you want but blaming the police for the Black community’s problems ain’t gonna solve a thing. “Instead write an article about teaching your Black kids to speak proper English, how to turn off the television and take away the video games. Encourage your children to read one book per week. Write an op-ed about Black parents teaching their children to save money and avoid credit at all costs. Write an article about Black parents teaching their kids that it’s ok to not have sex until they are married. Write an article about how Black men need to deal with the police when they come into contact with an officer. Write an article about how Black parents need to take an active role in their children’s education from pre-school all the way to college. I could go on and on but it’s just so much easier to blame someone else for your problems. Sincerely, ‘a house n.’” Hey, don’t kill the messenger, I didn’t say it. As clearly stated, I was quoting a blog text protesting the acquittal of New York cops that killed Sean Bell. I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from? ften times when people have made a career out of selling out, they try to paint a different picture of themselves on the way out the door. This is what U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has attempted to do when she said that the United States has a racial “birth defect.” I can’t take anything away from the comment because the United States was not founded on freedom, justice, and equality, but on racism, genocide, murder, and slavery. Ms. “Conde” is absolutely correct on that score, but the fact that she waited until her term is almost over to say it, is a bit hypocritical and insincere, especially since she supported the most foolish war in the history of the United States. With this “birth defect,” America has gone on to oppress another country of nonWhites, namely Iraq. She said that the country has made great strides because she was the first Black Secretary of State, but one must keep in mind that her acceptance for the po-

sition was a result of being a Republican, which is still mainly a “White man’s political party.”

“What happened to the racial birth defect hypothesis when the mostly Black population of New Orleans was being hit by Hurricane Katrina?” She accepted the position from an administration that was totally against civil and human rights across the globe, not to mention the fact that the Bush administration created a world-wide chaos with his war in Iraq. The war in Iraq did nothing for international peace and has helped to make oil prices soar. The war in Iraq has helped to cause events to spiral out of control in Sudan, Egypt, Chad, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Thanks to her “go along to get along” philosophy, the world is in worse shape than it ever has been. Becoming “Black” overnight is what she has done. She never claimed the country had any kind of major defect as long as she was doing Bush’s bidding, but now that she is on her way out she finds the leisure time to talk about what we all have known to be true for years. If the nation has a racial birth defect then why didn’t she say so when President Bush refused to speak before the NAACP? What happened to the racial birth defect hypothesis when the mostly Black population of New Orleans was being hit by Hurricane Katrina? I wonder how she found the courage to say that America has a racial birth defect? Real easy! When Uncle Tom and Aunt Jemima are leaving the confines of the plantation, they recognize that they will be back in the field with the common folk, so what better thing to do than come across as a born again radical? Rice’s comments were correct, but they are disingenuous and ring hollow when she has been at the calling of one of the worst presidents the United States has ever had. Rice said, “Black Americans loved and had faith in this country when the country didn’t love and have faith in them.” True, but let’s examine that comment with a little more analysis. Black Americans

African-American News&Issues • Texas • June 4-10, 2008 • 3 on Foreign Relations, proposed the establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community, generally referred to as the North American Union. It has been proposed by Robert Pastor, a vice-chairman of the task force, that the North American Union would have a common currency, the amero. New World Order (Novus Ordo Mundi) aside, religious-oriented Black Americans tend to believe in signs exposed in conspiracy theorist David Icke’s 1998 book (The Biggest Secret) that dissects the conspiracy. The signs, in essence, portend that there’s an on-going plot to rule the world primarily through a combination of political finance, social engineering, mind control, and fear-based propaganda. For example, the strange murals in the Denver International Airport, the Illuminati symbol on the Great Seal of the United States with the words “Novus Ordo Seclorum” meaning “New Order of the Ages”, Masonic signs on buildings (particularly in Washington DC) and pentagrams worked into city plans. In Mathematics, the universal symbol that represents change, the triangle, is shown; In the Great Seal of the United States the eye completes the triangle inferring change. A DVD entitled “Riddles In Stone” investigates the peculiarities in Washington, D.C.’s streets and buildings. God bless America. when they first came here in chains, as slaves, didn’t love a single thing about this foreign land headed by racists and murderers. Rice’s comment is cute, but devoid of historical content. A society based on racism cannot and will not have faith or love in the people that they oppress, unless you are willing to do their bidding. Rice has done the bidding of the Bush administration, a regime that cared little for Black Americans. She cannot divorce herself from whom she was in service for. It is not enormous progress when African-Americans are placed in important positions if they are doing the bidding of a group that is doing all it can to subvert democracy and civil rights. Under the Bush regime, we have endured illegal searches justified by a so-called Patriot Act. We have had innocent people tortured and brutalized by a regime that claims it’s for human rights. We have had African-Americans shot 50 times by rogue police officers and the Justice Department do nothing. It is apparent that these individuals, put in place by a continuing racist regime, will make selfserving comments on their way out the door, because the “master” gave them a pass. I wonder what Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will have to say when he decides to leave? Rice’s comments mean little and are as hollow as a log in Mississippi. She cannot become a progressive overnight with this type of rhetoric that is insincere at best and an attempt to clean up an ugly record at worst.

scrutiny), that revealed: “Surely anybody perusing the report prepared by HSCD’s Heike C. Coons, was enlightened inasmuch as it reflects a clear pattern of using females as a majority to the detriment of Black and Hispanic males. The report further revealed that HSCD-- like most everything coveted by Americans-- is a White male dominated agency. It’s not surprising that the largest numbers of positions held by minority males are on the lower echelon, i.e., patrolmen and jailers. There are 583 minority males among 2144 deputies and 119 minority male jailers making up a staff of 338. First, however, it should be stated that among HSCD’s 3477 workforce, there are only 531 Black and 295 Hispanic males. You may recall that history was written at the behest of Harris County Sher-

iff’s Department’s Detective Godfrey Tambe Eta, who AAN&I gave a forum when no other media would, inspite of a preponderance of evidence of Thomas’s racist regime. But you’ll have to visit our archives if you want more of that history. in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was instrumental in getting this cemetery established by Congress. ‘Congressman Albert,’ as his many friends knew him, died in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 15, 1966, and was buried in the mall area of the Houston National Cemetery, on Feb. 18, 1966.” However, if you ask the family, and friends of Fred Sanders, Jr., he is the most important person interred there. Sanders, Jr., who served in the United States army before being honorably discharged, was born in Houston on January 10, 1944 to Fred Sanders, Sr. and Theresa Sanders. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor E.J. Booker. He remained a faithful member until death under the leadership of Dr. Edwin A. Davis. Sanders, Jr., retired from the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Boulevard, in 2005 as a rehabilitation technician after 35 years of service. At the VA hospital, he worked hard to improve the lives of people with severe illness or injury with skill and compassion. His life of service continued with the Regular Grand Lodge of Texas, where he served as a past Grand Master 33/43 degree. After retirement, he became employed as a newspaper carrier for the AfricanAmerican News&Issues, where he impressed the owners and other employees with his dedication and attention to detail. Roy D. Malonson, publisher of AAN&I stated, “He was from the old school. He didn’t mind working. He wanted to work. It didn’t matter what he was doing, he was going to be the best at it. I’m happy he worked with us. His family has suffered a tremendous loss.” Sanders, Jr. died on May 19 and was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jackie & Florence Sanders, Sammy & Hazel Johnson and Jef-

Jarvis Christian College 2008 STEM Scholar Program Step Rideaux & The Zydeco Outlaws

June 14, 2008 “Celebrating Freedom and Unity”

Prairie View A&M Awarded $100,000 Grant from Tom Joyner Foundation and NEA Jarvis Christian College 2008 STEM Scholar Program participants HAWKINS- Jarvis Christian College implemented “Creating Windows of Opportunity for Success in the Sciences” as its Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) initiative to address the historical under-representation of minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines of study at the undergraduate levels. The HBCU-UP program for the STEM Scholars has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2000 and operates on the proven thesis that the scope, depth, and quality of undergraduate training have a strong bearing on the desire and the ability of an undergraduate student to attend and to succeed in graduate school. It further believes that student participation in undergraduate research positively correlates with their successful pursuit of the Ph.D. degree in STEM disciplines. This program affords 20 undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in research under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors in each of the targeted STEM disciplines on the campus.

Earning by Learning instills love of reading through incentives

DALLAS- Elementary school students at Dallas ISD are catching the reading bug through the district’s reading incentive program, Earning by Learning. The program seeks not only to instill a love of reading in children, but also to improve their reading level, which affects their overall academic achievement. For every book up to 20 that students in the program read during the 15-week program, each student receives $2. Students take an electronic reading comprehension test about the book they read to receive the bonus. Sixty-four Dallas ISD schools now take part in Earning by Learning. One of the Dallas ISD schools with highest participation rates in the reading program is B.H. Macon Elementary School. Since Earning by Learning began in 1996, almost 70,000 Dallas ISD students have read about 657,000 books and earned $1.3 million. Program sponsors, such as Washington Mutual, provide the funding for the incentives. According to recent studies, incentives are a proven method to get children to read. The Earning by Learning program is sponsored by Harvard University, the Richard A. Rudine Memorial Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas, the New Car Dealers Association of Metropolitan Dallas, and Washington Mutual.

PRAIRIE VIEW- Prairie View A&M University has been selected to receive a $100,000 grant from the Tom Joyner Foundation and the National Education Association (NEA) to help increase the number of fully certified teachers in minority and hard-to-staff schools. PVAM is one of several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) awarded funding from the Tom Joyner Foundation and the NEA. The PVAMU Teacher Certification Program, housed in the university’s Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, will facilitate the university’s scholarship award process. The program will focus on certification in the areas of Science, Mathematics and Special Education. The university plans to distribute funds for the program beginning summer 2008. To apply for funds for assistance with teacher certification, teachers must be employed by a K-12 public school and currently teaching without certification. Scholarship winners must commit

to teach for a minimum of three years in identified communities. Eligible teachers can access scholarship applications from the Tom Joyner Foundation Web site. NEA will review all submitted applications and will refer award candidates to the certification program at the nearest HBCU. The award grant will provide financial and professional development assistance to aid teachers working under provisional certification. Assistance will be offered in the following areas: tuition, books and support in preparing to take state teacher certification examinations. In 2005, the Tom Joyner Foundation distributed $700,000 to seed the scholarship program. Over the last three years, the partnership has provided hundreds of minority teachers with funding and technical support for workshops, coursework, materials, individual tutoring and examination fees to prepare them to pass state licensing examinations.

for dinner that evening. I soon figured out that there was work that went along with all this fun when it came time to clean my catch of the day. My mother was the fish cleaning instructor as well as the chef that taught me how to prepare such a meal.” Kevin continued, “My outdoor experiences expanded into hunting as my father introduced me to air rifles and firearm safety as a youth. These experiences later led into the sport of small-game hunting, migratory bird hunting, and eventually more challenging hunting experiences which included whitetailed deer, feral hogs, exotics and dangerous game (black bears and alligators). I chose a career in law enforcement as a State Game Warden and Peace Officer for the State of Texas so that I could be a part of the process of conserving the natural resources of our State while at the same time serving the citizens, educating the public, and promoting an outdoor alternative for children. I believe that if we keep our youth conscientious, through outdoor adventures and experiences, a legacy and mind-set towards conservation can be born to be passed on for generations to come.

dren to Robert and Wilma Malonson of Houston, Kevin displayed a passion for a career in law enforcement early in life and attended Houston ISD’s Magnet School-The High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. He is also an Honorably Discharged Veteran of The United States Navy-National Defense Medal recipient and Overseas Service Award recipient; Graduate of Lamar University in Beaumont, TX (Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice) in May 2000 and recipient of one of Lamar University’s highest honors-C. Robert Kemble Award (For Exemplary Character, and Distinguished Achievement, Leadership and Contribution). Kevin stated, “My interest and passion for the great outdoors began as a young child with my first fishing trip taking place at Huntsville State Park (ironically, a State Park under the direction of my current employer). I was around the age of 8-years-old at a family gathering and my father purchased a cane pole for me which turned out to be my magic wand that filled a cooler with tasty, freshwater perch
