Will President Obama be invited to the meeting? MEL HICKS
African-American News&Issues
FT. WORTH- As we witness history in the making with the probable election of the first Afrocentric president Barack Obama, I can’t help but ponder the question; will President Obama be invited to the meeting? You’re probably asking, “What meeting?” Let me explain. I have a friend that I’ll call Billy. I consider Billy to be as brilliant as Barack Obama. In fact, Billy was the first African-American to graduate from the University of Illinois (Circle Campus Chicago), with a degree in computer engineering. After his graduation, he went to work for one of the computer giants making a very nice salary. He was given all of the tough assignments, the clean up person if you will. The predominately White staff, including the supervisor, consulted with him and with his assistance, his department was ranked number one in the region. He thought everything was going well up until he started talking with several of his colleagues he had trained. The conversation would go something like this, “Hey Billy, did you go to the meeting today?” Billy would respond, “Yes, I went to the meeting at ten this morning.” The other guys would say, “No Billy,

In an era when “strong Black man” translated to intelligent, skillful, hard-working, family oriented, Christian gentlemen, Ethal Lieutenant Ellis, aka “Jack,” personified the made in America African males that were worthy of that lofty designation. And that’s how he was eulogized during the celebration of his long and productive life on August 6, 2007 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 1510 Pannell. Pastor Harvey Clemons Jr. officiated an order of service that included a poignant tribute by Jack’s beloved daughter, Dawn Ellis, and Rev. Gwen Pierre shared memories of her favorite uncle. Inasmuch as Jack married into Fifth Ward’s legendary Henderson clan, the order of service also included Rev. Lloyd H. Crosby, pastor of Mt. Corinth in Hempstead, Texas; Rev. Robert Staggers, pastor of Northside Antioch BC; Dr. Steve W. Hall, pastor of Bethany BC; and Sullivan Gant. Obama’s timely and highly successful European tour--via Iraq’s war-torn battlefront--gives descendants of slaves cause to pause and ponder whether or not, the haunting lyrics of the popular 1960’s civil rights mantra, “We shall overcome someday,” was prophecy? Nevertheless, although the above text could easily be mistaken for a report on Obama’s recent “political safari,” it, in fact, was an excerpt from Ken Rudin’s Dec. 7, 2006 article (Obama, or a History of Black Presidents of the U.S.), on National Public Radio’s Web page. It, in fact, was somewhat of a dig at Obama who he considered a media creation and concluded: “Barack Obama has been in the Senate for all of one year and 11 months. He is also African-American. And yet,

of all the things people are saying about the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, ‘race’ is usually not one of them. That’s a good thing, I suppose. Maybe it’s a sign of progress.

Then again, Black America would be better served to remember that hope is defined as things we’ve never seen, and faith without works is dead.

there was a meeting at noon, how come you didn’t go?” Billy would respond, “I was scheduled for lunch at that time, I didn’t know about it.” “Aw bummer, hope you can make the next one on Tuesday at noon,” they would say. “Sure I’ll talk with the supervisor,” he would say. Billy would later ask the supervisor, “Am I scheduled for a meeting next Tuesday at noon?” He would reply, “Um, no Billy, that’s for certain individuals with certain classifications.” Billy would then ask, “Why are Craig and Doug (the aforementioned White guys) being invited to classified meetings, when I have seniority over them and hold most of the classifications for this job, except supervisory?” The supervisor would then respond, “I don’t know Billy, I’ll have to look into this.” Needless to say the supervisor never did “look into it”, because he was in on the plan to deceive Billy. Even though Billy was doing a great job for the company and making them a tremendous amount of money, they didn’t seem to care. The company basically used Billy to do most of the important and dirtiest of work in the unit. Work that the Whites could not figure out or simply did not want to do and to add insult to injury, they gave Billy information on a “need to know basis.” Billy got very few accolades when things were going right, but received most of the blame when things went wrong. Moral of the story is, he got tired of never being invited to the “REAL” meeting, the one with the actual information of what was really going on in the company. Further, he was tired of the undercover apartheid treatment he received there just because he was Black. He decided to quit the company. But before he quit, Billy was mysteriously offered a hefty pay raise and an offer to sit in on every meeting that would be held at the company. He declined and he now works for a doctor’s service making $16.00 an hour and seems to be content. When I asked him if he have plans to go back and work in corporate America his response was “No way, I don’t need the aggravation or the stress, it’s just not worth it”. Which
“Maybe it’s a hunger for someone so new and so promising who transcends race. Or maybe we’re just deluding ourselves, and once he becomes a genuine candidate, all bets are off. I’m not suggesting there are secrets in Obama’s past that will torpedo his chances. I’m not egging on those who are obsessed with race. I’m just trying at the Hopewell Baptist Church in Crockett. He later united with Northside Antioch BC, in the early 1940’s under the leadership of the late Rev. J.C. O’Conner. He was educated at Center Grove High School in Lovelady, Texas. After moving to Houston at age 14, he continued his education at Phillis Wheatley High School and graduated in 1949. He continued his education at Texas Southern University. On May 4, 1963, he married Oretha O. Henderson at Pleasant Hill by the late Rev. Dr. L.H. Simpson. Through this marriage, he enjoyed worshipping with his wife and the Pleasant Hill family. In 1952, he became employed with Champion Paper Company, (Simpson Paper). For 42 years, he received recognition for perfect attendance and job performance. Jack was a lifetime president of the L & S Family Fund, a fundraising organization whose main purpose is to keep the family together. He was endowed with natural abilities that enabled him to do anything he set out to do. He designed and constructed his Houston
to get a handle on this phenomenon. And from what I’ve seen so far, it’s been pretty phenomenal.” Almost two years after Rudin’s syndicated “Political Junkie” column was published Black Christians have added “godsent to the positive adjectives used to describe Obama. Denial aside, although many made in American African believers choose to deify Obama they have become his greatest threat and the weak link in his strong campaign chain. Thus, African-American News&Issues (as Black America’s strongest editorial voice that speaks from an uncompromised Black perspective), would be remiss not to remind political naïve Black Americans that USA’s presidents ideally belong to the world. Accordingly, it should be obvious that he has become a symbol of hope for the tired, huddled masses See OVERCOME page 3

Black In The ‘hood Roy Douglas Malonson
f my absence (at Bishop Jimmy Dixon’s viewing/forum of CNN’s Soledad O’Brien’s documentary “Black In America”) was noted, let me first offer a disclaimer. I was invited, so African-American News&Issues’ telling it like it is about absentee community leaders had nothing to do with my being MIA. However, I did watch enough of it to know that I didn’t miss much. Truth is, it only confirmed the dire need for our uncompromised Black perspective editorial policy. So I wasn’t surprised that the documentary got negative reviews from Blacks in the ‘hood that are sick and tired of being sick and tired of media anointed Black leaders speaking for them. I won’t waste space with my own opinion, but I ask the same question that Monica Daye, the host on Shairis Radio Show (WXDU 88.7FM), asked: “Should CNN Define Blackness?” and “How do We Define Ourselves?” Even so, on AOL Black Voices’ “Black Spin” bloggers seem to resent the messengers, more than the message. To wit: “Even CNN’s “Black in America” they appeared to have gone and gotten the same ole talking heads that are on every Sunday, on TV One, Black Enterprise, Summits like D.L. Hughley, Angela, TD Jakes and Cheryl Lee Ralph to say the same ole stuff. I hate to tell White America but rappers, actors and Preachers do not speak for all Black folks. “D.L. Hughley does nothing for the community. In fact when some brothas in Hollywood wanted to start some inner city spiritu-
al groups for Black men, D.L. Hugley didn’t even have the time to do that. Yet White people found him and put him on as a speaker for Black men. “Why do news stations like CNN, MSNBC and others that do investigative reporting never use Black journalists? Even if the targeted audience is Black they still use White, Hispanic or East Indian journalist to report Black issues and stories in the Black community. There has been a decline in Black journalists getting employed in television. “There has been a rise in White females, Hispanics, Indians from India, Southern Whites but Blacks have been dropping in numbers. All Blacks get are these clowns like Larry Elders or Rubin or these radio Blacks who also moonlight as a reverend to speak for Blacks. And they are wrong or just tokens of the White racist mind set. “When CNN does something in Africa they send every other journalist BUT the Black ones. “They will send White to Africa, Europe and send the East Indians to Africa, Europe and Latin America and even send Rick Sanchez and Geraldo Rivera to cover the Hispanic communities, but when it comes to covering the Black communities or Africa they make an effort to use non-Black journalists. The cable stations do not give any PR, promotions and jobs to any Black doctors, sociologist or international journalist. They have every other ethnic group doing the international stories and when it comes to the Black journalists, they are lucky if they get to interview or report about the
lar overseas, but which would better handle the foreign policy challenges, predictable and unpredictable, facing the next president. “And that raises a deeper question: Just what are the ingredients for a successful foreign policy? Even Obama’s critics would be hardpressed to disparage the sight of so many Germans waving U.S. flags and cheering his message of tearing down walls. On Jan. 20, though, the foreign policy questions facing the new president will require far more than adoring audiences and press coverage. Berlin was a buffo outof-town debut, but rougher realities await.” Does that review conjure the poignant scene-- in the “Roots” TV classic-- when old Fiddler told Kunte Kinte, “You in ‘merikka’ now boy?” Race card aside, AfricanAmerican News&Issues (as Black America’s strongest editorial voice that speaks from an uncompromised Black perspective), we must warn our readers not to let passion, and racial pride, cloud their political judgment. We Must Understand, if we allow the powers that be to use electing a Black president to negatively impact local politics, we can’t win for losing (See Bud’s Eyeview), just as we’ve done on far too many occasions in the past. Surely this is a pivotal year in the nation’s political history. But, alas, unless Black America bewares of intellectual Trojan

rony notwithstanding, Sen. Barack Obama’s triumphant excursion outside the United States of America (See Front Page feature), that coincided with CNN’s much-heralded documentary “Black In America” couldn’t have been planned any better if it was a political conspiracy. Nevertheless, when one has the wherewithal to analyze the ground-breaking events from a critical thinker’s Black perspective, one more than likely will conclude that made in America-Africans have been historically treated with more respect in foreign lands than they are in the land of the free. In essence, Black Americans are blacker in America. We Must Understand, that there’s a preponderance of historical evidence that African-Americans best and brightest often fled to foreign nations to escape institutionalized racism. Accordingly, a July 25, 2008 opinion piece (Easier said than done), in USA Today forewarned: “Obamamania went global this week. An estimated 200,000 spectators in Germany responded to Thursday’s speech by Barack Obama with the enthusiasm more often reserved for a rock star. Eloquence clearly comes to the Democratic presidential candidate as naturally as music does to Bruce Springsteen or Bono. For voters back home, though, the key question is not which candidate gives the better speech or is more popu-

Bud Johnson: The Old African Warrior
oebeit I understand when Black history illiterate brothers and sisters put the old African warrior/griot into the “radio revolutionary” category, it vexes me when the ego-trippingtalk show hosts cut me off in midsentence. And that’s why there’s no shame in my game when I name and blame Black faces in high places that have turned radio programs (targeting Black consumers) into political and intellectual Trojan horses that pose a real and present danger to Black America’s progress. Unfortunately, Black-oriented radio stations (owned by White conglomerates, or sell-out Black moguls), have become intellectual weapons of mass destruction for Black perspectives. Especially when malleable minded Black folks allow a status quo system friendly media think for them. Divide and confuse notwithstanding, I was thrust into a position that’s tantamount to choosing sides when long time friends divorced by a diverse group of Black leaders. Believe it, or not, they used “a ‘free’ Legal Redress Clinic” hosted by a coalition, e.g., the National Bar Association, and NAACP, to ambush Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. For sure, it’s not surprising that long time “Sheila haters” would take advantage of the Black community’s disaffection for her playing on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s losing team. Nor was I sur-
prised that the Breakfast Klub’s Marcus Davis had political aspirations. Yet, I must confess I never expected him to challenge Lee as a Democratic write-in candidate. For sure, I recalled my mentor, the late, great Herbert “Big Bopper” Provost saying that when you’re flying high, only a few high power guns shoot at you, but if you get your wings clipped and lose attitude, everybody with guns start shooting. And that’s exactly what’s happening to Sheila. Hence, her foes should be forewarned that I have her back. And love ain’t got nothing to do with it. And, as much as I love my political naïve brothers and sisters that unwittingly buy into the “it’s time for a change” mantra… it’s a change for the worse if we can’t win for losing. History records that “change” has defused Black’s political power greatly since we voted for term limits, and allowed the media to turn us against strong Black leaders that threaten the status quo system. Yet, we keep making the same mistakes over and over. Unfortunately, Black-oriented radio stations (owned by greedy White folk, or sell-out Black folk), have become intellectual weapons of mass-destruction throughout Black America. Consequently, radio talk show hosts have become power brokers. Don’t believe me. Instead, try to think of the Black broadcasters that were recently elected, or selected to feed at the
‘cat stuck in the tree! Then again, we have been lamenting for years that Black leaders have the power to make a change. “Even Barack Obama didn’t do his CNN interview with Suzanne Malveaux, the CNN journalist from New Orleans, who is one of the best political journalists on TV. Obama was interviewed by the new guy at CNN. The East Indian Fareed Zakarha??? Then again, Obama could have asked for a cer-
tain journalist being that Jews ask for Jews, Hispanics ask for Hispanics and White men ask for Fox News (where they know that White men run the show) but Blacks just accept anyone. And half the journalists do not even like Blacks so you never know how the interview will be slanted and twisted.” A letter to the editor closer to home alleged: “Went to CNN (Blacks In America); listen at Soledad spew negative undercut statements on Blacks

horses, we will be too divided and confused to take advantage of, perhaps, the greatest opportunity we’ll ever have to influence “Change We Can Believe In.” In essence, we must put aside petty differences (defined in Willie Lynch’s How To Make A Slave letter), and separate political business from personal b.s. Denial aside, every Black leader that didn’t jump on Obama’s bandwagon (after it became obvious that White voters were desperate for a change too) find themselves in trouble with their constituents. For sure there’s much wisdom in Charles Dudley’s often misquoted proverb, “Politics makes for strange bedfellows.” Thus, it’s not surprising that the GOP and their Democrat adversaries joined forces to move once immobile Black faces in high political places nationwide. In essence, even if Obama becomes president, the status quo system can’t lose for winning. In fact, Black newspapers dare not report anything that has the slightest connotation that impacts Obama negatively, lest we’ll be denounced for exercising our First Amendment free press mandate to “report all news without fear or favor.” Even so, we wouldn’t be a creditable newspaper if we failed to tell it like it is, whether political naïve Black politicos want us to tell it or not. Because, for sure, it is like it is, whether we tell it or not.
public troth. We’ll discuss that later. Meanwhile, since the political wars will be fought on the radio, my pariah status will limit my input. Especially among the “igno-ranting,” wannabe “talk show warriors” that inanely praise the hosts and radio stations for “doing a good job.” Mayhaps they’re emulating White “Ditto Heads” that are programmed to call conservative hosts “great Americans?” Hey, dare I express how dumb one has to be to rely wholly on a radio talk show to shape their opinions? Then again, I would be hypocritical if I didn’t admit that I use radio talk shows for my own selfish purposes. Even when I’m cut off abruptly, it still opens a portal to my column. Regrettably, I refused to touch a computer until I was 65. I had no idea that the Internet would recharge my cranial circuits. Selfaggrandizement aside, I’ve gained more fans in less than a decade of Internet exposure than my combined four pre-computer decades as a journalist. Not to mention connecting with a new generation of warriors to be enlightened by a living historian that they can actually relate to. So I think I’m battle ready to fight one more war. However, Sheila has already fired the first shot in the radio wars. She invaded Sunday Morning Live, which was being co-hosted by Davis. Stay tuned, because it’s on. I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from? To contact Bud Johnson, please call 281- 847-9929 (8-5- Wednesday -Thursday) or via e-mail at Africanwarrior@aol.com
social ills; my how she hates us. Why is Soledad telling our story? Where the hell is Roland Martin? that are negatively impacted by an evolving New World Order globally. That fact is validated by “The World Wants Obama Coalition” Web site that states: “All around the world an energetic and unprecedented movement is growing in support of Senator Obama’s candidacy to be the 44th US President. Some examples of the worldwide movement include: In Trinidad, calypso legend The Mighty Sparrow sings that America could “regain worldwide respect with Obama’s vision”, and in Jamaica reggae star Cocoa Tea adds ‘This is not about class nor color, race nor creed. It’s about the changes, what the Americans need.’; In China a dramatic Obama rally is being planned on the Great Wall; In Egypt a humanitarian worker has written letters to dozens of superdelegates urging them to back Obama; In Gaza, a Palestinian student has been making hundreds of campaign phone calls to the US over the internet, whenever he has electricity and is not under Israeli bombardment; In Kenya, Obama is so popular that a beer has been named after him! On the internet there over 40 international Obama fan groups on Facebook, many with more than 500 members, focused on Denmark, France, Indonesia, Tanzania and other countries. Opinion polls comparing him with McCain, show that Obama is consistently the favorite candidate by a wide margin. But, alas, none of those nations vote. Political columnist Clarence Page explained: “Sure, the media coverage helps Obama, but it also confirms the biggest bias in the media, our hunger for a big story—and the audience that comes with it.” Lest we forget, in spite of all of the hoopla, according to polls Obama only has a six-point lead over McCain. Hence, perhaps, we shall overcome if we adhere to BLKMANUP30’s July 18 blog. The true believer pontificated: “Change is in your hands and God wants you to make the right decision. My proof that God sent Obama is evident in his struggle to get here, and in his courage to stand up against as strong opponent to challenge the status quo. Much like David and Goliath. Who has ears let them hear sayeth the Lord. Follow Obama into the Future.” Then again, Black America would be better served to remember that hope is defined as things we’ve never seen, and faith with out works is dead. Voter apathy aside, America needs “Change We Can Believe In” to overcome the difficult days ahead, therefore voters must make the right decision at the polls on Nov. 4, 2008 to keep hope alive.

brings me back to my original question will President Obama be invited to sit in on the “REAL” meeting? The meetings where national defense, health care, economic, and other important issues are discussed and made. Will the “White folks” get in Obama’s face and let him know that they are still running every inch of the country and they will let the little Black Prez in on information on a need to know basis? Will they buck him at every turn not working with him to clean up the catastrophic mess
African-American News&Issues • Texas • August 6-12, 2008 • 3 the Bush administration has left, leaving Obama to become a “lame duck President”? These questions will be answered only if and when Obama is elected. If elected President, let’s hope he is up for whatever tactics are initiated and will be allowed to run the country as he sees fit. HOUSTON- Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee welcomed House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to Houston, Texas on July 18, where the two conducted an examination into the Harris County Judicial System. The unofficial hearing took place at City Hall. They examined the many missteps and shortcomings of the local criminal justice system, and addressed questions surrounding the recent findings of 101 deaths at the Harris County Jail, the derogatory emails being circulated in the Harris County Sheriff’s office, the years of DNA evidence mismanagement, the Joe Horn case, the ICE Immigration Raids and much more. They also conducted an examination of the healthcare crisis in America, offering Universal Healthcare as the solution. This forum took place at The John P. McGovern Theater Health Museum. Representative John Conyers, Jr., a Detroit Democrat, was re-elected to the 14th Congressional District in November 2006, to his 21 term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district covers all of Highland Park and Hamtramck, as well as large portions of Detroit and Dearborn.

COMMUNITY & YOUTH Volunteerism can make a difference in your community & business CARY YATES
GUEST COLUMNIST
MISSOURI CITY- The power of workplace volunteerism is huge – according to the National Council on Workplace Volunteerism, 463,000-plus employees gave more than nine million hours of their time in the U.S. and abroad in 2006. During the same time-frame, more than 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies reported having volunteer programs. Cary Yates Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Yet there also is a host of business benefits that can result from community service. Read on for a few examples of win-win situations that can be created when businesses support their employee volunteerism. Employee Camaraderie. Company-sponsored volunteer events provide a two-pronged benefit: they empower team members to support worthwhile causes and provide the opportunity to meet coworkers outside of their work area. Getting together outside the workplace fosters relationships between team members and helps us call our coworkers “friends.” Company sponsored volunteer events can also help build bridges between internal workgroups. Recruitment- Demonstrating your company’s commitment to community service may also help recruitment efforts. Even with unemployment rates at 4.1 percent in Texas, human resources departments in our community are working to recruit qualified team members. Employers have long touted benefits such as health care and vacation time. Letting prospective team members also know about your company’s commitment to community service should also be part of that list. One recent study shows more than 80 percent of us in the workforce review a company’s commitment to social issues when we are considering a new job. Corporate Reputation- More and more, consumers are paying attention to a company’s reputation for philanthropy and community support when making buying decisions. According to the 2004 Cone Corporate Citizenship Study – an 11-year research poll – more than 70 percent of Americans say a company’s commitment to a social issue is an important factor when deciding whether or not to recommend the company’s products and services to others. In fact, that same study indicates
Americans between the ages of 18 to 25 are significantly more likely to consider a company’s citizenship practices when making purchasing decisions. Long-term Business Health. Doing business in a healthy, vibrant community is beneficial for commerce. Taking an active approach to helping make your community an even better place is a smart way to help secure your company’s place in your community’s future. Community Feedback. Workplace volunteers are in a unique position to talk to prospective customers and community stakeholders about what is going on in the community. This insight and feedback can be helpful when determining new services or products. It is also helpful when assessing how well your company is responding to the needs of your community. You don’t have to be a Fortune 500 company to have a workplace volunteer program. There are many organizations and Web sites that can help you develop a meaningful program – for your business, employees and community. Here are a few sources that can help your company harness the power of workplace volunteerism: • The Corporation for National and Community Service works to strengthen communities and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. Learn more about starting a workplace volunteer program on their site, http:// www.nationalservice.gov. • Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network is a national organization that promotes volunteering. Their site also contains helpful information about starting a workplace volunteer program. Log on at www.PointsofLight.org. If you’re not quite ready to pioneer a volunteer program in your workplace and want to search for volunteer opportunities in your area, visit: • Volunteer Match at www.volunteermatch.org. This site helps match volunteers with opportunities in their community. This nonprofit organization has more than 125,000 visitors each week and is committed to building world-class Internet applications that bring communities closer together. • Volunteer Solutions at www. volunteersolutions.org. A division of the United Way, Volunteer Solutions helps connect individuals to volunteer opportunities in their community. • USA Freedom Corps at www. usafreedomcorp.gov. An office of the White House, USA Freedom Corps partners with national service programs and helps connect individuals with volunteer opportunities I wish you the best of luck with your efforts. Working together, we can make positive differences in the communities we serve. Cary Yates, market growth & development manager for Wells Fargo in Houston, works closely with nonprofit organizations. He lives in Missouri City with his wife, Clarease, who is a U.S. Judge and their children Shawn, Phillip and Chelsey.
