SAN ANTONIO- At the 19th Senatorial District Convention in San Antonio, Texas, chaos ruled the day as the local Bexar County Democratic Party leadership lost precincts, provided people with the wrong information, violated party rules, and was characterized by trickery. These tricks also included delaying the convention as long as possible, reportedly to the benefit of the Hillary crowd. Additionally, the convention was held in a “hot dump” of a building in which the owner kept walking around the property dogging people out. The decision to use the Martin Alvarez site was a total disaster with people claiming that the owner of the building would be boycotted and told not to support the businessman after he repeatedly harassed delegates who had brought their own food and drinks. Alvarez was hawking poor-quality food at a ridiculous price and threatened to kick people out for not buying his food. The Chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party, Carla Vela, accused the temporary chair of the convention, Nick Pena, of purposely losing dozens of precincts which resulted in the loss of delegates for

The inquiry [of legislators] constantly is what will please, not what will benefit the people. But it’s the people themselves, not the legislators, who are to blame. The people, murmur at taxes, clamor at their rulers, but then elect demagogues who appeal to our worst instincts. Today, we have a coarser public discourse and lower standards, and we have suffered the consequences of a political party that quite openly set about to divide Americans into hostile camps because it believed that strategy would give them a narrow electoral advantage. The result is an atmosphere in which it is almost impossible to have a mature, adult, logical national debate about important issues. Hacker, a freelance writer, who served as press secretary for two Democratic senators in the 1980s and was a fellow at the International Center for Jefferson Studies in Charlottesville, Va., has long noted America’s intrinsic similarities to the Roman Empire’s fall. For sure, those similarities have been addressed many times in AfricanAmerican News&Issues’ articles that can be easily accessed in our Web page’s archives www.aframnews.com. Especially an article asking, “Has President Bush forgotten Rome’s history?” In addition you’ll find articles that also explain why a Democracy self-destructs, that should give one cause to pause and ponder, whether Rising Star Baptist Church in Conroe. Sam and Annie moved to Houston, Texas where Annie united with the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. L.H. Simpson. She has been a lifetime member, serving in the Mission and as a Sunday School Teacher. Annie has been an integral part of the storied history of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. No children were born to this union, which lasted until Sam’s death in 1971. In Conroe, Annie began a lifetime of caring for the children of others. Her sister’s two children Alice Maud McCloud and Owen Charles McCloud were the beginning of a legacy of family and friends’ children that were under her care. or not, America is doomed to repeat mistakes world powers made in the past. Even so, those familiar with Edward Gibbon’s classic book (The Decline of the Roman Empire), will agree that great empires tend to self-destruct regardless of their governments. Yet, there’s a preponderance of historical evidence that parallels 21st Century America’s reality. According to Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia, “In contrast with the ‘declining empire’ theories, historians such as Arnold J. Toynbee and James Burke argued that the Roman Empire itself was a rotten system from its inception. The entire Imperial era was one of steady decay of institutions founded in Republican times. “In their view, the Empire could never have lasted without radical reforms. Since the mid 1950s, Annie has lived on the premises of the Frazier Funeral Home, which was owned by her sister, Bessie Mae Frazier. Since her sister’s death in 1975, Nana has had a special bond over the years with the FrazierMitchell Funeral Service staff as they shared the premises. Politics Ain’t Prophecy Roy Douglas Malonson

’m sure those who depend on a politically-controlled mass media for their major source of information read the great revelation, “Slade avoids prison with plea deal” that dominated the Houston Chronicle’s March 27, 2008 early morning edition. As usual, that also was the topic of discussion for the talk show on Houston’s “only Black radio station.” So I shouldn’t waste space, or time regurgitating the bias news report. Even so, African-American News&Issues (as Texas’ widest circulated and read newspaper with a Black perspective) would be presumptuous to think everybody can afford to subscribe to Houston’s only daily newspaper. Accordingly, here’s an edited excerpt: “A scandal that began in 2006 when a TSU regent complimented Priscilla Slade’s choice of home furnishings ended Wednesday with a deal that lets the ousted leader of Texas’ largest historically Black university avoid prison in exchange for paying back $127,672. Her first trial ended last year in a mistrial, and the former, muchbeloved president was scheduled to again face judgment Friday. Wednesday’s settlement, reached after hours of negotiations and ending with Slade apologizing, brings the saga to an end. In addition to repaying the money, Slade will also be given 10 years of deferred adjudication in exchange for the ‘no contest’ plea. That means the finding of guilt will not be on her record if she completes probation. She must also perform 400 hours of community service. “Assistant District Attorney

s we watched President George W. Bush futilely rationalize, moralize, justify and sanctify his preempted strike on Iraq (in response to 9/11 and Saddan Hussein’s non-existent WMDs), African-American News &Issues’ living historians had cause to pause and ponder, whether or not, he took time out of his hectic schedule to listen to Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s fiery sermon that has become a thorn in presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama’s Black flesh. Denial notwithstanding, when one reviews the cost of the ill-fated war in money and/ or lives, God, indeed, is damning America. Thus, even if Sen. Obama Barack neglected to rebuke his pastor in the past, Bush should say “amen” today. We Must Understand, evil rulers have either ignored, or resented God’s prophets through-out history. Bush, in fact, ignored not one, but two letters from the Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan. If you recall, Minister Farrakhan warned: “Mr. President, you must study prophecy in order to beat it. Look at the nations to the north and south of you. Are they pleased with you, your administration and your policies? Look at your friends in the Middle East. Are they really pleased with you, your administration and policies? Look at your European friends and your African and Asian friends. Chuck Rosenthal’s bullet), African-American News& Issues won’t waste time and space to say we told you so. Then again, we would like to believe that the six jurors that refused to be bullied by State District Brock Thomas’ tactics are among our estimated 2 million readers that were able to connect our editorial dots to reveal the whole truth. “We Must Understand, it is virtually impossible to prove that a person who serves at the discretion of others was guilty of criminal intent, sans the blessings of a higher authority. TSU is no Enron, but the jury apparently followed the same line of reasoning when they listen to the prosecution’s witnesses that admittedly conspired with Dr. Slade vent their personal disaffection for their tyrannical associate. Conversely, our mission statement is to be a different kind of Black newspaper that reports all news without fear or favor from an uncompromised Black perspective. Accordingly, as we’ve said repeatedly, WE AIN’T PLAYING. In addition, if you visit our archives, you’ll

they will hate you and ultimately make you desolate. We are headed into a terrible time. “I am writing this letter as a final witness of my deep concern for you and for the nation, believing, however, that you are bent on doing what is in your heart with respect to Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Mr. President, if you do this, you will bring down upon America an increase in the Divine Judgment of rain, hail, snow, wind, earthquakes, pestilence and famine that is already witnessed in the country. As you go about destroying other nations and cities, you will bring this kind of Divine Wrath on the American people and on American cities.” Amen aside, Bush also chose to ignore Osama bin Laden’s prophecy that his “war on terrorism” would cause economy chaos in America. We Must Understand, bin Laden’s prophesy becomes reality when one reads: “As of January 2006 counted $323 billion in expenditures for the war on terrorism. This includes military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just this week the House approved another $60 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, which would bring the total allocated to date to about $400 billion. The Pentagon is spending about $6 billion a month on the war in Iraq, or about $200 million a day, according to the CBO. That is about the same as the gross domestic product of Nigeria.” However, if the “Axis of Evil”

oebeit as much as my brothers and sisters declare “Knowledge is power,” it grieves me that a disproportionate number of made in America African’s tired, huddled masses (indigenous to underserved, crime and druginfested urban jungles of the land of the free), don’t have too much more political power than our uneducated forefathers had when they were emancipated. That sad reality is untenable in an era of unprecedented, and/or unrestricted access to intelligence. For real, today’s outer worldly technology allows one to casually tool down superhighways of information on a moderatelypriced cell phone. Perish the thought I’m disputing Hosea’s lament, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” But, alas, when I listen closely to clueless brothers and sisters “igno-ranting” about topics ranging from politics to religion, I must question the biblical icon’s abridgment. Square business, there’s a much deeper problem than a lack of knowledge that’s causing 2008 Black America to self-destruct. However, I have enough knowledge (about how humankind’s cranial circuits are wired), to dare not try to dispel misinformation they’ve already deposited in their intellectual banks simply by invalidating the source. Accordingly, mayhaps,I should first do a little showing off and dip into what Schools of Communication alludes to as Journal-

ists’ “Deep Well of Knowledge.” Shazam! After over 50 years, my well is sho’nuff deep. If you hear me being dissed by talk show hosts (that delight in “bleeping” me in mid-sentence), know I’m teaching, rather than offering an opinion for debate here. As brazen as that sounds, veteran journalists must be more knowledge than educators. For real, good journalists must go beyond simply being an intellectual, or scholar to reach pundit, or master of words status. It’s incumbent upon us to know the whole truth, to report nothing but the truth. Yet, one must be smart enough to realize that smart folks resent smarter folks. Especially if the person (imparting knowledge to folks suffering from the residual effects of Willie Lynch’s slave indoctrination) is Black. And that, my brain-dead naysayers, is Black folks’ deeper problem I alluded to earlier. I say this, to say that for some unfathomable reason, everybody wants to talk today. Even if they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s bad enough they get most of their misinformation from a bias mass media (putting a special interest spin on news and issues to beguile malleable-minded citizens), but they don’t understand the misinformation they’re “igno-ranting.” Cutting to the chase, knowledge is power only when it’s used to change things. Otherwise, a lit-

can’t get an amen from Bush, perhaps he will defer to the late Pope John Paul II, who in his speech to the world’s ambassadors, on Jan. 13, 2003 said: “No to war! War is not always inevitable. It is always a defeat for humanity. “International law, honest dialogue, solidarity between States, the noble exercise of diplomacy: these are methods worthy of individuals and nations in resolving their differences. I say this as I think of those who still place their trust in nuclear weapons, and of the alltoo-numerous conflicts which continue to hold hostage our brothers and sisters in humanity... I will simply add today, faced with the constant degeneration of the crisis in the Middle East, that the solution will never be imposed by recourse to terrorism or armed conflict, as if military victories could be the solution.” Cutting to the chase, instead of mixing church business with political games, Bush and our sin sick nation should read 2 Chronicles 7:14 in this disquieting time. In essence, if the leaders of the land of the free, seriously want God to bless America, they would say amen to the scripture: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” And, perhaps, God won’t damn America. tle education becomes a dangerous thing for talking heads too dumb, or lazy to listen, or read enough to validate flawed knowledge before passing it on to dumber folks that’s dumb enough to depend on them for edification. Hello preachers, teachers, key note speakers, and ego-tripping parents, et al! Excuse my venting, but we can’t educate our children if there’s a failure to communicate. So can we talk? As always, I researched to learn where the English philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626), was coming from with his “Knowledge is power” axiom. Mayhaps it isn’t widely known, but his quote continues: “For whatever deserves to exist deserves also to be known, for knowledge is the image of existence; and things mean and splendid exist alike.” Do you feel him? If so, “whatup” with supposedly educated Black folks who ignore African-American News & Issues’ well-researched knowledge (circulated in over 400,000 free newspaper, to empower a politically-powerless people in over 40 Texas cities), and continue to regurgitate the bias mainstream media’s misinformation as if it’s gospel? Knowledge’s power aside, you can’t answer that unless you know that Bacon’s wisdom concludes: “One of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea.” I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from? able. The Roman economy was basically one of plunder, which was based on looting existing resources rather than producing anything new. The Empire relied on booty from conquered territories. This source of revenue ending, of course, with the end of Roman territorial expansion. Rome’s pattern of tax collection drove small-scale farmers into destitution (and onto a dole that required even more exactions upon those who could not escape taxation), or into dependency upon a landed élite exempt from taxation. An economy based upon slave labor precluded a middle class with real purchasing power. Rome produced few exportable goods. “Material innovation, whether through entrepreneurialism or technological advancement, all but ended long before the final dissolution of the Empire. Meanwhile the costs of military defense and the pomp of Emperors continued. Financial needs continued to increase, but the means of meeting them steadily eroded.” Denial aside, 474 A.D. Rome’s history chillingly describes 2008 America. Meanwhile, we defer to one of our deep-thinking reader’s e-mail for a Black perspective. The politically- astute intellectual watcher on the wall confided: “I wrote to you about the economics of Keynes versus the economics of The Austrian School, aka Adam Smith or laissez faire economic model. Capitalism rewards the wealthy and oppresses the poor. Why do you think any Black or poor White person would embrace a system that acts against their interest? “US capitalism has to be tweaked (redistribution of wealth through taxation or programs) if it is to remain viable. Despite these political shenanigans, which have earmarked the Hillary campaign, Obama defeated Hillary in the caucus delegate count, resulting in more calls for Hillary to step down. With Hillary so far behind, and with her needing to win the remaining primaries by large margins just to catch up, many are speculating that she will resort to this type of graveyard politics used by party officials in San Antonio. talism for the last 25-30 years. Kenneth Dolbeare wrote in ‘Democracy At Risk,’ (page 32) ‘We militantly refuse even to notice that there is a profound conflict between the multiple inequalities of a capitalistic society and the claim to have a democratic political system.’ Frederick Price in ‘Race, Religion & Racism’ quoted a Harvard trained economist, currently the president of Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., ‘-----once you get behind in the ownership of capital, the normal process of the economy will keep you behind ‘forever.’” More succinctly, Hacker concluded: “I tried to answer a perennial question about American politics. Does the United States look more like the country predicted by Thomas Jefferson, or by his rival, Alexander Hamilton? Jefferson asserted that ordinary people with sufficient education and virtue can govern themselves wisely, that liberty is the natural desire of all mankind, and that the world’s monarchs and dictators will ultimately be overthrown. On the other hand,Hamilton claimed Jefferson’s view was folly, based on wishful thinking, because human nature itself precludes the kind of wisdom necessary for self-government. Indeed, if Jefferson returned today, he would be shocked by the reemergence of self-styled Christians hacking away at the wall between church and state. “Hamilton and Jefferson were both deeply affected by the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason, but Hamilton believed reason would always be under attack by demagogues who know hate and fear are stronger motivators than reason and rationality. Maybe Hamilton was on to something. Is democracy a natural state of mankind? Is the survival of democracy assured even in the United States? It is a what Hillary is relaying to bamboozle her way to a nomination. If Hillary gets the Democratic Party nomination, which is highly unlikely at this point, she will be characterized as the candidate that cheated her way to the top. Democratic Party hacks have ruled the Party for so long that they can’t see that Hillary needs to step down now, to save the Party and the election from the clutches of the Republican war mongers in November. Hillary needs to recognize that the super delegates most probably will not provide her with a win as many of them are smart enough not to go against their own constituents to help her. However, some super delegates seem not to be smart enough. Case in point, Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston. Sheila Jackson Lee is backing Hillary as a super delegate, although 90% of the African American community in her district is supporting Barack Obama. Obama delegates booed her, and it could mean big trouble for her efforts to stay in office, as there appears to be a campaign mounting to retire her at the next election. Any and every super delegate that goes against the wishes of their voters are playing into the hands of party hacks that care little or nothing about the black community. For all of the Hillary political hacking done little was accomplished, as Obama came away with a majority of the delegates statewide. Projections place Obama ahead by 600 caucus delegates to the State Democratic Convention. If this holds, Hillary actually will lose Texas and Obama comes out ahead again. Bexar County could not save the day for Hillary as thousands of voters are growing tired of the backroom underhanded, negative, dirty politics of the Hillary campaign. As the days go on Hillary is becoming a liability and the Democratic Party which may be getting ready to dump her, as the chances of beating the Republicans are slim to nothing if she wins the nomination. If Hillary wins the Republicans win!

“Democrat Party can no longer hide its hypocrisy” Apparently, there is a double standard in the Democrat party regarding Black candidates aspiring being elected to the presidency. The litmus “Jeremiah Wright” test is clearly designed to prevent Blacks from befriending anyone deemed unacceptable to the establishment. Why does the Party continue to minimize the accomplishments of Sen. Barack Obama? It is obvious that he represents major changes, based on the voters, that are necessary for the revitalization of America. Hillary Clinton’s tenured popularity should not be the determining factor in receiving the nomination. Playing the race card is the only issue that matters in her egotistical desires on returning to the White House. The Super Delegates are faced with the important challenge in doing the will of the voters. Refusing to comply would result in a backlash of Obama supporters voting for Sen. John McCain. The party can no longer hide its hypocrisy in relating to Black Democrats versus White Democrats. Floyd Andrews Houston, TX

I would be so proud to have Mr. Obama as my president. I have never seen so many people coming together from all walks of life and races supporting one person. Anyone who does that can bring peace to other far away countries. He brings hope and love and it doesn’t matter how many times people try to knock him down, he always get back up with a smile and say, “there is hope.” The people who are digging the ditches for him are filling them up themselves as fast as they can dig them. I pray for him everyday and night and I know God is with him and his sweet family. Everyone I know, loves him and God bless him. He is his own man and I belive no on can change his mind if they are wrong. Gracella Bossette Houston, TX

Looking back on that bleak period in his life, he says, “I am pretty sure that if God had not intervened, my marriage would have been over.” Jennifer had constantly covered for him and bailed him out of jail. But like so many people, she was what is called an “enabler,” someone who enables another to persist in self-destructive behavior by providing excuses or by making it possible to avoid the consequences of such behavior. After he got out, Darryal began to volunteer with the Houston Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse, which has a mission to: “keep our community healthy, productive and safe by providing services and information to all who may be adversely affected by alcohol and drugs.” He wondered why there weren’t any similar programs in the Black community? After meeting Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell, of Windsor Village UMC, 6000 Heatherbrook, in 1988, he was moved to action when God seemingly answered his question by asking him, “What are you going to do?” According to Darryl, he vacillated by using the excuse that he didn’t go to college, didn’t have a Master’s degree or a Ph.D. “But you have a G.O.D.,” the answer came back to him. When the Cocaine Deliverance Ministry first started at Windsor, people were apprehensive and didn’t really know what to make of it. Consequently, for the first two months, nobody showed up. However, one night about 10 people did. “I don’t know where they came from, but 20 years later, we are still meeting.” Two years later, Jennifer became a part of Williams Resources and as Executive Director, is an integral part of the component that is geared towards the family. At the 20th anniversary of the ministry held last year, it was standing room only as family members, friends and supporters came out to celebrate the milestone. Williams thanked people like Caldwell, who has never missed an anniversary event in 20 years, Lisa BerryDockery, the ministries HUB leader who “makes sure that we have basic needs to operate and have we need to help people,” along with the entire staff and church congregation. Ministries like the one at Windsor are proving to be much-needed because there are only two charitable hospitals in Houston—Barbara Jordan Healthcare Center of Houston, 4514 Lyons Ave., and the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, 2118 Washington, where abusers can get low-cost and even free treatment. Even then, because of the limited number of beds and the extraordinary number of addicts, many seeking treatment are forced onto waiting lists. Williams points out that there has been a surge in the use of crack and for a period of time, even heroin use had increased. “The picture that most people have of addicts are people who are under the bridge on Pierce, homeless and pushing a cart. But the real picture shows students, professionals, and even ministers,” he stated. See FIGHTING page 7

Darryal Williams right, founder of Williams Resources, said he was pretty sure that if God had not intervened, his marriage would have been over after his third D.W.I. conviction. His wife, Jennifer, is an integral part of the Family component of the ministry. Photo by M. Hope-Thompson TX-3

geometry test if he or she can’t pass a sobriety test. Truth is, it’s difficult to recognize when your child is abusing drugs when you as a parent get high too. In most cases if you follow the student home and peek into the back window of the home, it all begins to make more sense. It has been scientifically proven that drug using parents produce children who are often genetically predisposed to substance abuse. Growing up, I remember having friends who got high with their parents. Some of them even stayed awake in Algebra class, but most of them ended up strung out severely. Peer pressure is said to be the leading cause of drug use among students across America. While parents may be able to do little to control the pressures, they can do wonders in preparing their children to meet, overcome and even reverse these pressures by properly educating their children about these drugs and their effects. “Just say no” is not enough. The previously mentioned statistics are proof. There needs to be a weekly tour of the county jail and morgue so that youth can see up close what the end of the high road looks like. You may deem that harsh, but I would rather take my child to visit the morgue than visit my child at the morgue later. Deric Muhammad can be reached at askbrotherderic@yahoo.com.

It will take place in the Conrad Hilton Ballroom of the Hilton University of Houston Hotel, 4800 Calhoun St. Both seminars are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the seminars, visit www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ franchise/ft_tour_0408.html. Black Pilots visit various Houston ISD schools; encourages students to aim for aviation careers

HOUSTON- About two dozen pilots and an equal number of professionals from other fields, spoke to approximately 5,000 students in elementary, middle, and high schools about careers in aviation and the importance of staying in school—but the most convincing part of the pilots’ presentations may not have been anything they said. Instead, the simple fact that several of the pilots were successful HISD graduates spoke volumes. “For current students to see former students who have graduated and gone on to college or professional careers in highly regarded fields is one of the best kinds of inspiration they can get,” said Continental Airlines pilot and coordinator of the Pilots in Schools HISD Community Engagement Coor- program for the Organization of Black Airline Pilots Xavier Samuels dinator Rose Adams, who planned the (center) receives an HISD Certificate of Appreciation. The star of the show was Ross Sterling High School graduate Corey Shepard, a member of the Class of 1998. Shepard actually taught in his alma mater’s Magnet aviation sciences program before becoming a commercial pilot for Continental Airlines in 2004. He urged the students he met with to never to give up on their dreams, as “once you take off, the troubles stay on the ground. You’re in a different place that not everybody gets to experience.” Another Sterling alumnus, Marvin Weatherspoon III, is now pursuing a degree in aviation science at Texas Southern University. “I had an inspiration to become a pilot ever since I was a little child,” he said. “I was once sitting where they were, and (my achievement is) a testament to what they can do and what they can become.” Other presenters, such as Texas Southern University aviation instructor Charles Glass, spoke about the financial rewards of a career in commercial piloting. “The opportunities are there,” he explained. Pilot Kelvin Sherman speaks to students at “They can make up to $200 an hour in the transporCharlotte Allen Elementary School. tation and aviation fields.”

Supporting OUR Historically Black Colleges and Universities is IMPORTANT for our future!

“By the time they get to us, they usually don’t have a job, which means they don’t have any benefits or insurance to pay for treatment,” he continued. “We provide the three Hs: Help for now, Hope for tomorrow and a Home to belong.” People might be surprised to find out that girls are becoming more and more involved in illicit drugs. According to Darryal, who provides training at juvenile detention centers, it has become a trend for young ladies, as young as 12-yearsold, to commit heinous crimes. Some are doing things as iniation into gangs and others are doing it independently. Many are confusing love with lust and for most, the common thread is drugs. Family members can become a part of the ministry, even if the addict doesn’t. Because addiction affects everyone, it is important that everyone has access to the information. Signs to look out for include: a change in friends; dropping grades (school-age and college); change in appearance; isolation; away from home; money issues; and attitude. The bottom line, said Darryal is to be aware of D.E.N.I.A.L. which stands for “Don’t Even Know I Am Lying.” The bottom line he says is, “the Cosby Show is idealistic, but not realistic. We want to change lives at an early age. If they don’t change, they won’t reach my age.” After the success at Windsor Village, he launched other programs at St. John’s UMC, when Caldwell was senior pastor there, now under the leadership of Pastor Rudy Rasmus (15 years); and Lily Grove Baptist Church (12 years). That program is under the leadership of Deacon Byron Griggs. After noting that there weren’t anything in the Prairie View area, Williams who also works at the University there under Thelma Pierre, started a pro-

gram in Hempstead, Texas at the Mt. Corinth Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Lloyd H. Crosby. That program lasted six years. Two years ago, Covenant Glen United Methodist Church started a program under Dr. Robert E. Childress. Programs are also at Palmer Memorial United Methodist Church and Abundant Life Cathedral. Gail Shaw, along with her husband Rodrick will launch a substance abuse prevention and support program at Pentecostal Baptist Church. Darryal believes the more programs we have in churches, the more help we have in the community. “People don’t have to be members of the churches; all of the programs are open to the community. We ” In addition, Darryal has presented workshops, seminars and in-service training programs and lectures to hundreds of adults and youth throughout Texas. Recently he was invited to England to participate in the United Kingdom Recovery Convention. He was able to share how programs are started, the innerworkings of Williams Resources. It was also an opportunity for him to let that part of the world know about the work at P.V., because they wanted to know in particular how the ministries were getting the message through. Darryal stated, “Substance abuse is world-wide, standing recovery ought to be worldwide too.” Last month, for example, he had a chance to work with the Sigmas, Zetas and Omegas along with the Health & Counseling Service in a blood drive. He also stated that his long-term goal is to start programs in rural areas. That may be a daunting task, but as he knows all too well, “the will of God will not lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you.” For more information, call (713)723-8187 ext. 293.
