Chuck Rosenthal did what he said he wouldn’t do (resign).

Rosenthal is history, but ...

“For much of the postwar period, higher shares of African-American workers have been in unions than workers from other racial and ethnic backgrounds. As union

representation and union coverage have declined for the country as a whole, unionization rates for African-Americans have fallen more quickly than for the rest of the workforce. For example, since the 1960s, African-Americans were more likely to work in the heavily

A very predictable chain of events culminated with Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal’s reluctant resignation. His abrupt departure came as his tormentors (including most of Houston, Texas’ high profile African-Americans), turned up the heat by using the same mechanism that he used to destroy so many lives during his 31 years as a prosecutor for the nation’s most Draconian criminal justice system. Chuck went out swinging, however, and had the audacity to, in essence, plead temporary insanity caused by “the particular combination of drugs prescribed for me in the past has caused some impairment of judgment.” Even so, the good news is that Rosenthal is now history. But let’s not confuse his history with the younger generation’s cliché for telling an intimate friend, or spouse “that their relationship is definitely over.” Ideally, African-American News&Issues’ estimated 2 million enlighten readers and millions more that regularly visit our Web Site at www.aframnews.com recall our many articles where we explained that history is ongoing and/or what’s past isn’t hardly gone. We’re suggesting instead… that whenever corrupt courts are discussed in the future, Rosenthal’s saga will be used as a prime example. I’m equally sure that when Houston’s self-aggrandizing future leaders want to make their city look good they will trot See ROSENTHAL page 3

unionized automotive sector than White or Latino workers. From the end of the 1970s through the early 1990s, African-Americans were just as likely as workers from other racial and ethnic groups to have manufacturing jobs. Since the early 1990s, however, Black workers have lost considerable ground in manufacturing. By 2006, Blacks were about 15 percent less likely than other workers to have a job in manufacturing.” This preface excerpted from The Black Commentary’s March 8, 2007 critique, suggests that younger generations forgot descendants of slaves’ history, therefore they repeated mistakes that divide and confuse 2008 Black America. And, for sure, nobody mourns the loss of Blacks’ unity more than the living historians that represent-

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee expressed the nation’s thanks for Wheatley’s service. Rep. Harold V. SAN ANTONIO- Although both presidential candidates Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hilary Clinton opened campaign centers in Austin, preparing for the upcoming Texas presidential primary (March 4, 2008) and offices in Houston, Dallas and other cities, citizens waiting for voting to begin in San Antonio, long anticipated last week. The Barack Burnett Leon Bell Sr. whose long and productive life ended on Feb. 28, 2007, typifies the hard working, God-fearing Black men of his era. Accordingly, it is an honor to present a complimentary memoriam (sponsored by Shirley Ann’s Black Arts & Kollectibles Showroom), during the 32nd observance of Black History Month. Bell’s life and legacy was celebrated on March 10, 2007 at Clinton Park UMC, 201 Calloway, with Pastor James Crabbe officiating a brief order of service that was fitting for a man who, indeed, had lived his sermon. Active pallbearers were: Carleton P. Bell, Jerry C. Young Sr., Darryl A. Mayfield and Jerry C. Young Jr. Jesse C. Gates, Jerome C. Bell, Reuben Wheatley and their families were honorary pallbearers for Burnett, who was born on October 20, 1916 to Leon and Ethyl Bell in Spring Hill, Louisiana, a small city in Webster Parish, Louisiana. (The name of the town was originally “Barefoot”). The Bell family moved to Hous-

As fate would have it when Burnett finished Crawford Elementary School, instead of traveling to Freeman’s Town to attended “Old Colored High” (aka Booker T. Washington), he was among

Burnett, who immediately went out for the football team was blessed to have John Codwell as a coach. A great rivalry began on Oct. 23, 1927 when Wheatley’s first team lost to Jack Yates High School, 19-6. However, the following year Burnett and his teammates led the Wildcats to its first Negro State Championship finals before losing to Corsicana High School in a hard fought game on their home field on Dec. 15, 1928. After high school, Burnett had few options but to go to work. Thanks to his parents who instilled a devotion to family and a strong work ethic, Burnett got a job at Southern Pacific Railroad (a dream job for Blacks of his era), and worked 40 years before retiring. He received an award for 40 years of Injury-Free Service when he retired. he also received an award for the Employee of the Month in February, 1968. Apparently, he instilled his

work ethic in his boys who all became great athletes at Wheatley. Burnett Jr. starred in all sports and Carlton “Ding Dong” Bell’s name still resonates when one speaks of Wheatley’s greatest basketball teams that played for Coach Collins Briggs. Little brother Jerome, who played baseball, football and basketball, exceeded both when he went on to star at Okalahoma State University and the National Football League. Jerome now lives in Galena Park. Burnett, was preceded in death by his parents; two sons; two sisters, Vasie and Naomi; and one brother, Maceo. He leaves to cherish his memory, one untiring, devoted, caring son, Jerome; two grandsons, Carleton and Jerry; one granddaughter, Norcott Estancia; one daughter-in-Law, Norcott Erie Bell; three sisters-inlaw, Hazel Wheatley Kemp, Helen Wheatley and Luella Wheatley; five great-grandchildren, Daphne, Tiffany, Jerry Jr., Charisse and Terriah, and a host of treasured nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. ’m not playing when I say that African-American News& Issues will report all news and/or issues (germane to Black America in particular, and the world at large in general, and challenge misformation by taking the spin out of bias, special interest propaganda), without fear of favor. And if you think I’m not serious, I want to set the record straight that no matter what our writers say publicly is on them, because if it isn’t a validated fact it will never be published in my paper. I say this, because our resident living historian told me he played mind games on a radio talk show in an attempt to provoke a rebuttal. Tongue-in-cheek, he weighed in on the Black History myth of America’s first president being Black, because he was a Moor. The old warrior/griot purposely spun the theory a Moor could possibly be in the equation because African Pirates played a significant role in the Revolutionary War. However, he knew better. In fact, we have the whole story of John Hanson, who I’ve long heard Black wannabe historians identify as America’s first president. Then again, our prime directive is to enlighten our readers. In addition, our mission statement is to publish at least one little known fact in every edition. Accordingly, I decided to share History Channel’s edited article entitled: John Hanson, American Patriot and First President of the United States: (1715-1783), for your edification: “George Washington was definitely not the first President of the United States. He was the first President of the United States under the Constitution we follow TX-2

leaders were indeed, anointed by God. Perhaps, not like His only begotten Son… our Messiah. But, most assuredly, much like Moses, who the omnificent I AM empowered to convince Pharaoh to let His people go. For sure, it’s understandable why a people emerging from nearly 300 years of brutal bondage would be politically naïve. Accordingly, Black folks tended to consider former slaves who had the nerve and verve to speak boldly to White folks, heroes that were more-orless protected by God Almighty. Even so, politics, like all other social vocations requires education. And, ideally, a political education starts primarily with the ABC’s to prepare one for elementary instructions. Need we waste space and/ or time explaining that ultimately one should graduate to a level of political astuteness that allows one to grasp the concept of political gamesmanship? Lest we forget, slow learners are usually retarded. Consequently, retarded comes to mind when 2008’s Black Americans factor God into a political equation the same as our ancestors in 1868 America. We Must Understand, there’s nothing godly about politics. In fact, the Greek philosopher Plato (428-328 BC), in his book “The Republic,” argued that all conventional political systems (democra-

cy, monarchy, oligarchy and timarchy) were inherently corrupt. That’s why it’s disheartening when Black and proud Obama supporters allow the race card (played as a trump high Joker), to put us in the position of not being able to win for losing. We’re talking, without fear of contradiction, that unwarranted attacks on Black politicians, or anybody else (that supports Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton rather than Obama), shouldn’t be part of a political equation in a Democratic election process. Truth is, supposedly politically-astute Black political activists are downright childish, if not retarded, to allow emotions to overrule common sense. Space won’t allow us to ventilate sufficiently here, therefore it’s likely that we’ve failed to communicate with political retards that should have common sense enough to realize that not only have times changed, but post-integration demographics too. No longer can public servants discriminately serve in the best interest of people who look like them exclusively. Then again, we dare not ignore signs and wonders. Yet, if Obama is anointed by God to be the first Black president, we suggest that YOU Get off your knees (thanking God for small blessings and tender mercies), and get yourself to the polls on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 and become part of the miracle that’s unfolding.

Let’s be heard! Exercise your right to vote on March 4, 2008 in the Texas Primaries!

pparently made in America African “political actors” have elevated Sen. Barack Obama to the status of a minor god, insofar as it becomes blasphemy to even entertain the thought that he hasn’t been anointed to become this sin-sick nation’s Lord and Savior. Objectivity notwithstanding, although it won’t make the slightest bit of difference, we would like to put it on record that every person that has the remotest connection with African-American News &Issues is praying that Obama does indeed, make us Black and proud by becoming the first person of African decent to occupy the oval office and re-establish God’s blessing on the land of the free. We Must Understand, however, contrary to what one might believe… becoming president of 2008 America is closer to being cast into hell’s fire and brimstone, rather than being a blessed and highly favored Commander-in-Chief of this ungodly, decaying nation. Even so, there’s a preponderance of evidence that suggests that Obama is the closest thing to a political savior among the aspiring presidents running for their bipartisan party’s nominations. With that said, let’s cut to the chase and explain where this editorial’s “retard” indictment is coming from. History records that descendants of slaves were indoctrinated to believe that their

today. And John Hanson, the first of seven earlier Presidents are forgotten in history. Other presidents after Hanson included: Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), John Hancock (1786), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788)—all prior to Washington taking office. Hanson actually was royalty. He was the heir of one of the greatest family traditions in the colonies and became the patriarch of a long line of American patriots—his greatgrandfather died at Lutzen beside the great King Gustavus Aldophus of Sweden; his grandfather was one of the founders of New Sweden along the Delaware River in Maryland; one of his nephews was the military secretary to George Washington. “Another was a signer of the Declaration; still another was a signer of the Constitution; and still another was a member of the first Congress; two sons were killed in action with the Continental Army; a grandson served as a member of Congress under the new Constitution; and another grandson was a Maryland Senator. Thus, even if Hanson had not served as President himself, he would have greatly contributed to the life of the nation through his ancestry and progeny.” Since the foregoing history can be easily found with a minimal of research on the Internet it puzzles me why supposedly well educated Black folks continue to espouse that Black History myth, rather than simply do what they claim the younger generation should do to close the so-called “digital divide.” It’s even more puzzling why

oebeit the days to observe Black History Month is dwindling down to a precious few, therefore as a living historian and professional communicator, I would be remiss to not tell my own story, that ideally connects the dots with my brothers and sisters that are recognized in the “whitewashed” history that’s derisively tabbed “Uncle Tom’s Bible” in the ‘hood. Hey, if Black pundits don’t tell it, why should we expect for anybody else to? What I’m saying is when descendants of slaves allow descendants of slave owners to write our history, they’re wont to glorify those who serve “Massa” well as “role models” for our future generations, while our heroes become history’s conundrums. In case you’re not down with conundrums, Webster-Merriam Dictionary defines them as, “A riddle whose answer is or involves a pun, or a question or problem having only a conjectural answer.” I’m sure you’ve been asked the often misquoted conundrum: “If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?” And I’m equally sure that you answered yes. However, if you’ve never witnessed a tree fall, your opinion becomes conjecture that’s based intellectu-

ally on some simple laws of physics. On the other hand, when you have historical knowledge about falling trees, you have to factor in the conditions under which the tree fell before you can apply those simple laws. And that’s where I’m coming from when I share my personal experience with history makers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hey, the brother was just another Black preacher who was in the right place, at the right time when a chain of God-ordained events forced greatness on him. For sure, shallow-minded brothers and sisters that don’t know the difference between a hero and Black role models that the White media turn into a minor god for us to worship. It amazes me how incredulous history-illiterate brothers and sisters react when I mention that I took photos of MLK that Houston’s dailies begged my paper (Houston Informer) to use. In addition, their eyes roll skyward, as they mentally queue up The Twilight Zone because they think I’m ego-tripping into The Outer Limits of fantasyland when I say I once kissed Rosa Parks on the cheek. Accordingly, they flat don’t believe that I verbally traumatized the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan in a

Black journalists, talk show hosts, preachers and teachers ignore our well-researched information that we publish every week and continue to feed the misinformation and Black History myths that we constantly invalidate. To set the record straight there was a White and a Black John Hanson. (FYI: John Hanson was a 19th century Liberian Senator from Grand Bassa County who was involved in efforts to relocate African Americans to Liberia. There is some-

times some confusion between him and John Hanson, the President of the United States Continental Congress, and some of those who claim John Hanson to have been the first President of the United States also hold that the American Hanson was Black.-Wikipedia Free Online Encyclopedia.) It really bothers me when I hear Black people regurgitate the marketing propaganda (Black kids will suffer from a digital divide if we don’t buy them expensive comput-

classroom. Even so, today’s civil rights heroes were my contemporaries. In fact, I was mentor to many of them, hence I know I was smarter than some of them. Ergo, I know my mentors were sho’ nuff as courageous as the Black role models anointed by mainstream America. For real, I’m talking brilliant brothers like Rev. L.H. Simpson, Carter Wesley, Julius Carter, George “Pops” Nelson, Herbert “Big Bopper” Provost, and so many more, I dare not try to name them in this limited space. Lest we forget, I haven’t even got to my list of truly great sisters who had the backs of those great brothers of my era. Thus, I’m not in awe of Black faces that are elevated to high places by White folks. Truth is, the most unforgivable thing about racism, is that it prevents Black America’s best and brightest from reaching their full potential. I often have cause to pause and ponder what a multi-talented Fifth Ward legend like Robert Tapscott could’ve achieved sans racism and discrimination? Alas, we’ll never know, because since White folks that validate our history (didn’t hear, or see him do his thing), my perplexity becomes a conundrum. I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from? Alston, Garland Ward, Mavis Dedman and Rev. Carolyn Clay Pickens also paid tribute to the great man who worshipped among them. Ruben, as a member of the God fearing Wheatley clan, confessed his faith in Jesus at Sloan Memorial UMC. Ruben, however, was a warrior by nature (which was proven by his athletic prowess) and he was predestined to fight for equality. Thus, it wasn’t surprising when Ruben, who was a star athlete at his beloved Phillis Wheatley High School (excelling in football, basketball, and track and field earning the nickname “Rabbit”) started working on the Houston docks in 1946 where his father had worked since 1921. However, it is very doubtful if history will reveal that Rosenthal was forced out of office because he had become a liability for Texas’ Republican regime that realized that he couldn’t possible win against former Houston Police Chief Clarence O. Bradford. Therefore, as always, it becomes Texas’ widest circulated and read newspaper with a Black perspective to tell it like it is, insofar as if history isn’t said (recorded), it can’t be read. If, by chance, future journalists write about Rosenthal’s history, they will peruse our archives and read my 915-08 Analysis (Remember D.A.’s History), that asserts: “It didn’t take long for my phone to start ringing after Michael Harris, as usual, opened his Person-to-Person callin talk show on KCOH (1430 AM) radio by reading the hottest article in the Houston Chronicle’s Dec. 27,

ism, therefore he became a member of ILA Local # 872 (which merged into Local # 24). And the rest is history. Ruben, served his home local as Trustee, Recording Secretary and Business Agent before being elected President in 1971. In 1975, he became Executive Vice President of the South Atlantic Gulf Coast District of the ILA. In 1979, he was elected International Vice President of the International Longshoremen’s Association. He served diligently in both positions until 2006 and retired as Executive Vice President Emeritus, however, he also fought for his country during World War II. He joined the Army in 1941 and served in Europe and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1945. He then married Helen McCree, his high school sweetheart, on Nov. 18th of that year. To this union, four daughters were born: Beverly, Sheila, Dianne and Marsha. He also joined his bride at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and subsequently, both, as faithful servants of the Lord, joined Brentwood. Ruben also was deeply committed to his community and his civic involvement reflected his concerns. During the 1950s, he campaigned for the South Central Branch of the YMCA and served as a board member. He remained a Century Club member of the “Y” until his death, and he also was an active board member of Family Services of Greater Houston and supported the United Negro College Fund and the Boy Scouts. He also was a member of True Level Masonic Lodge, the Lone Star Golf Association, the NAACP (life member) and the Bob 2007 edition. “The article supposedly was an expose about District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal’s alleged proclivity to woo and reward his love interest. Other than the fact that Rosenthal was dumb enough to romance a female like a love struck teenager who reveals secrets of his heart in an e-mail, I found nothing truly newsworthy about the (real, or imagined) media revelation that was meant to be a political bombshell. On the other hand, since I know “poli-tricks” a red flag went up. Maybe I’m paranoid when it comes to “power politics” (that concede nothing without a struggle), but my suspicions about how Houston/Harris County’s movers and shakers were going to keep former HPD chief Clarence O. Bradford from becoming the first African-American District Attorney,” were confirmed. I went on to write: “For some strange reason Black people don’t seem to realize the enormous (life and death) power that a district attorney has. I say this because Black voters failed to read the handwriting on the wall and seize an opportunity to “chuck” Chuck from office in 2004 by electing McKamie. Fortunately, our uncompromised Black perspectives allow us to (not only read the handwriting on the wall), but to prepare for war in the time of peace. And, trust me, when I say that our research files are fully loaded with historical stuff that we intend to use judiciously, so that Brad’s opposition can’t formulate a strategy to ambush him like they did Rep. Sylvester Turner when he ran for mayor. Meanwhile, please note how cleverly the Chronicle reported Rosenthal’s crawfishing. “This is serious. From my Black perspective, Bradford doesn’t fit the image of a “safe Negro,” therefore you can expect the rich and powerful (e.g., racist cop unions and bias media) to play a whole lot of ‘poli-tricks’ before the Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 elections.” Gift of prophecy notwithstanding, I want history to note that the Black community was duped into wanting to remove Rosenthal from office and lessen the chance to elect Bradford, because they failed to consider AAN&I’s common sense Black Perspectives.

and Hawaii, his ninth and 10th wins in a row. In the Wisconsin primary, Obama beat Clinton 58 percent to 41 percent, with 99 percent of the precincts reporting. He also won the caucuses in Hawaii, his native state, over Clinton 76 percent to 24 percent, with all precincts reporting.Early voting for the election started on February 19 and runs through Friday, February 29, 2008. City Council District 2 and State Representative District 120 voters are being urged to cast their votes at the Claude Black Center at 2805 E Commerce Street or at any of the other early voting sites that will be open. The other sites available to District 2 and State Rep. District 120 are Lions Field at 2809 Broadway, and Montgomery Elementary at 7047 Montgomery Drive. Additional sites are available by calling 335-VOTE. If you wait until the day of the election, you will have to vote at your precinct. On election day and after the polls close, citizens are being urged to return to their polling place and hold a caucus meeting to elect delegates. This will be very impor-

tant and everyone is being urged to return to their poll to vote delegates in for the national convention which will be held, August 2528, 2008 in Denver Colorado. At the grand opening of the Obama San Antonio offices, supporters are being urged to attend the meetings at the time your poll closes (about 7:15p.m.) to elect delegates that could make the difference in the final count. The Obama campaign is the most spirited campaign in the history of the United States, and stands to break down the “Berlin Wall” of race if Obama wins. Everyone should vote in this election as it stands to be of a momentous scope. On March 4, voters in Rhode Island and Vermont also go to the polls. Clinton has lost tremendous ground and must win Texas and Ohio to remain competitive. After trailing early on, Obama now leads in delegates and Clinton may not be able to overcome that edge without very large margins of victory in Texas and Ohio and without a large majority of uncommitted superdelegates breaking her way. Conversely, Obama can take Hilary down if she loses either one of these cru-

cial states. The super delegate argument may not be an issue if Obama wins handily in both states. Senator Obama has increased the pressure lately by garnering Hispanic support, support of the woman vote, and an increasing number of older voters. The Hispanic vote will be crucial, and it’s no secret that Clinton has a lot of support and respect from the Hispanic community. Former mayor Ed Garza, Congressman Charlie Gonzalez, and a host of other Hispanic leaders have validated Obama. Clinton meanwhile, has resorted to negative campaigning and attempts to characterize Obama as a “dreamer.” For his part, Obama stays on message and articulates that experience is not always a good thing if you are on the wrong side of an issue. He has created a immense grassroots campaign in Texas unlike anything seen before in American politics. He has galvanized opposition to the Iraq War as one of the most corrupt wars in American history. It will assuredly damage the Republican nominee, who appears to be John McCain, although he said that we might “be in Iraq for 100 years.”

Smith Yacht Club. Lest we forget, Ruben also loved golf. As a teenager, he learned the game caddying at country clubs and later was one of the founders the Lone Star Golf Association. The LSGA allowed him to fill his mantel with tournament trophies and meet wonderful people on courses throughout the world. He considered June 15, 1993, one of his best days as a golfer. It was the day he made a hole-in-

Ruben Wheatley finished his course, and left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory: his wife of 62 years, Helen; four daughters Beverly Ratliff, Sheila Wheatley-Clark, Dr. Dianne Nicholas and Dr. Marsha Wheatley; son-in-laws, Denzell Jordan Reed and Christopher Jordan Reed; sister, Hazel Wheatley Kemp; aunts, Virginia Lee and Doris McGowan Rayna;

“War is not the answer DERIC MUHAMMAD

African-American News&Issues

The 2008 presidential primary has turned out to be one of the most electrifying, exciting and riveting political seasons in the history of this great nation. Many cite the popularity of the current candidates as the chief reason for the high voltage response to the race for the next commander in chief. While I can agree, I also believe that the supreme level of dissatisfaction with the current president and his administration has the American people just as excited about George Bush’s departure as they are about the possibility of electing Obama or Clinton or whoever. President Bush will exit the oval office as possibly the most unpopular president in American history. And it seems that he has taken the United States Military along for the ride. The number of Black people joining the United States military has taken a dive by one-third since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars began. The Pentagon reported that there were 51,500 new Black recruits for active duty and reserves in 2001 and that number fell below 32,000 in 2006. In 2007, it got worse despite the military’s aggressive offering of increased incentives. The only carrot that they haven’t dangled in the faces of Black youth is that Cadillac Escalade “sitting on 22’s, but I’m sure they’ve already priced them. Black men and women have a sordid historical relationship with the United States military. We have fought on every foreign battlefield to maintain a freedom in America that we have yet to enjoy as equals with our slave-masters’ children.

The Vietnam War decimated the ranks of men in the Black community so severely that in 2008, we are still feeling the effects of a war that left many of its soldiers hopeless, homeless, jobless and languishing in insane asylums. Our fathers and uncles risked their lives only to return to the “same ‘ole America. Now let’s fast forward to 2008. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already claimed the lives of thousands of soldiers and left nearly tens of thousands armless, legless, paralyzed and in “vegetable state. Others have become mentally disturbed—leaving them violent, homicidal, suicidal and unable to cope with civilian life. The heavy publicity associated with the “cost of war in Iraq and Afghanistan has affected our youth to the degree that they are silently protesting the war by not exercising the traditional option of joining the military. This means that 35 years later, young people agree with Marvin Gaye’s assertion: “War is not the answer. To fill the void left by this overarching sentiment among youth, the military has lowered the bar that qualifies an individual for enlistment. This means that less educated, less qualified brothers and sisters can now “be all they can never be by joining the armed forces. You no longer need a high school diploma and past run-ins with the law are either excused are “overlooked. This is a desperate attempt to save face, because when a nation has a hard time recruiting it’s young men and women into the ranks of it’s military, it gives the appearance of a weakening army—left to protect it’s interests. I would warn young brothers to be mindful of the man in the uniform knocking on the door in the projects. If indeed the Army, or any other branch, will allow you to enlist despite your criminal record or lack of education, trust me, they do

Perfect attendance pays off

HOUSTON- Vines EC/PK Center has put great emphasis on making sure both the parent and the child understands the importance of good attendance and getting to school on time. Vines EC/PK Center celebrated the achievement of their students that had perfect attendance and no more than two tardies during the first semester of school by entering these students in the Vines Perfect Attendance Bicycle Drawing. These students took home a brand-new bicycle donated by InvesTex Credit Union. not plan to place you in an air traffic control tower. The least qualified recruits are usually the first to hit the front line in war and subsequently the first to be shipped back home in a casket. If you have already enlisted in the service and you receive orders to go to a war that is taking the lives of human beings, it is your human right to respectfully say to them “I’m not going. Trust me, I know from experience (smile). It is good that our young brothers are stiff-arming the war machine and exercising other

From the left: Asia Knight, Emily Lechuga, Jonathan Marquez & Jaden Jones options. I believe that the young Black male is a soldier by nature and desires to be among others who are like-natured. If they are not going to the U.S. military, then what army will they join? I humbly submit that every Black church, mosque and organization of goodwill must embark upon a massive recruiting drive to bring in the young Black males who are turning down the option of a career in the U.S. armed forces. We must then unite and teach them character and discipline and

give them a mission at home worthy of their very lives. We must pool our resources to create opportunities that they will not have to resort to selling drugs, robbing, counterfeiting or other criminal behavior. If we don’t unite, then our young men will reject one boot camp only to be forced into another called TDC (Texas Department of Corrections) where they will be forced to wake up just as early.
