HOUSTON- Everyday, the media department at the Houston Police Department sends out several news releases to media outlets, detailing tragic crimes in the area, such as one titled, “Fatal Home Invasion at 8100 Lenore.” It goes on to state, “Houston police are investigating the death of a man at 8100 Lenore about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday (July

22). The victim, Javier Cortez, 37, suffered blunt trauma to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. HPD Homicide Division Sergeants L. A. Flores and P. C. Motard and Senior Police Officer C. P. Abbondandolo reported: Patrol officers responded to a dead on arrival call at 8100 Lenore and found Mr. Cortez in his bedroom deceased. Further investigation determined Cortez’s brother had arrived home earlier and found him in the bedroom and his mother in a second bedroom. The rear door was found forcibly opened and the residence was in disarray. Cortez’s mother stated to investigators a loud noise woke her and her son, then several unknown suspects rushed in the bedroom and repeatedly struck Cortez. The suspects then went through the residence and took unknown items.” Although the ages of the suspects are unknown at the time of the

“Spreading Hope In An Uncertain World” report, the violence enacted is symptommatic of the turbulence facing young males today. Many teen-age boys and young adult men find themselves trapped in tragic situations of gang violence, hip-hop culture, self-identity crisis, poor family relationships and incarceration. To combat this, “A Day of Discussion, A Day of Acceptance, A Day for Change” a conference that reaches out to teen boys and young adult men ages 11 through 35, will be held at the Blueridge United Methodist Church, 2929 Reed Road, where Rev. Rodney L, Graves, is pastor. This is the third “Young Men of Valor” conference and this year, it’s held Saturday, August 2, 2008 from 8:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m. (Registration and Continental Breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m.). Pastor George E. Burrell, Sr., the pastor of a Friendswoodbased ministry, Internal Hope Fellowship Church, aka “The Fellowship of Hope,” gave birth to this conference. See CHAPLAIN page 6

Bennie Bass Jr. personified the courageous Black men of the “Roaring Twenties” that set the standards for future entrepreneurs that became the backbone of descendants of slaves who defied the odds against them and took on the responsibility of leadership in their communities throughout the land of the free. Thus, the accomplishments of those uncommon men were revisited when the history maker’s life was celebrated at Ross Mortuary Chapel, 3618 Lyons Ave, on July 31, 2007. Pastor C. L. Harvey officiated an order of service that included: Rosalee Taylor, Millicent James, and Elsie JonesWashington. In addition, Larry Young, Spelvin Jackson, Albert Womack Jr., Jeffrey Williams, Donny Sherman and Fredrick Jones Sr. were active pallbearers. Kevin Bass, Kerry Bass Sr., Xavion James, DeMarcus Perry, Edward Schasa and Matthew Jackson were honorary pallbearers for Bennie, the second of Bennie and Irene Jeffrey Bass Sr.’s four children who was born on March 10, 1924. He accepted Christ at an

America’s Responsibility

Are Black males unfairly ostracized? BUD JOHNSON

Denial notwithstanding, one should have cause to pause and ponder, whether or not Black America’s anointed leaders live in a parallel universe from disenfranchised descendants of slaves who are trapped in underserved, crime and drug infested urban jungles indigenous to the land of the free. Then again, unless one has the wherewithal to separate political rhetoric from reality, a failure to communicate is enviable. Hence, as Black America’s editorial voice, African-American News&Issues dares to suggest that responsible people should objectively explore the nettlesome appellation “responsibility” that’s used ad nauseam to unfairly ostracize Black males. Although responsibility is defined simple enough, i.e., the state of being responsible, or a person or thing for which one is responsible, if taken in the context of a reprimand it can easily become a racial slur. Perhaps, unwittingly, Sen. Barack Obama

R. Kelly is free. Now the question that looms largest in the minds of Black folks is… “FREE TO DO WHAT?” Some say he is now free to pursue his music making career and continue to supply us with the songs we love to sing without the dark cloud of the justice system hanging over his head. Others say that he is free to do to some other young schoolgirl, the same thing that is alleged in the infamous tape that spread through the hood like a California wildfire.

early and grew up in Sunlight MBC under the leadership of Pastor A. B. Boylan, and was educated in HISD schools. History records that 1938 was a pivotal year in Houston, Texas insofar as Curt Flood, the man who would be responsible for free agency in pro sports was born on Jan. 18. In the month of April, Carter Wesley launched a shame and blame campaign against Black leaders in his Houston Informer newspaper. Wesley was at odds

did, indeed, “talk down” to Black males on Father’s Day, when he used general terms. In addition, “change” doesn’t resonate when one says: “If we’re serious about reclaiming that dream, we have to do more in our own lives,” insofar as MLK’s dream of racial harmony Watching Kelly walk out of a Chicago courtroom in June provoked conflicting emotions in Black America. While we make up approximately 12% of the population in this country, we make up approximately 60% of the prison population. That being said, it is always a good feeling to see a Black man walk out of a courtroom without handcuffs and shackles on his body. We rejoiced when O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder. We rejoiced in the 70’s when Black Panther, Huey P. Newton, beat his case. However, when a Black man is accused of having several sexual encounters with underage Black girls he gets no parade. The abuse of young girls is a huge problem in our society. Some statistics say that nearly half the females in the Black community were violated

with Black leaders over the Houston Housing Authority’s slum clearing project. Meanwhile, on July 20, President Franklin D. Roosevelt impacted 1938 Black Houston’s history when he signed an order to release the surviving Black soldiers involved in the Camp Logan riot. History also records that on Oct. 21 C.F. Cliff Richardson Sr., Will Green, William Drake and Julius White filed a class action suit against the Democratic Executive Committee, et al, for denying Blacks to vote in their primary. Surely, the court’s ruling against the lawsuit wasn’t the most significant event in Bennie’s young life, since he married Mildred Green during that eventful year. To this union, four beautiful children were born. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted and served two years in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1945. Some years later he married Lola Fullson. Bennie then became employed with Kelley Steel and Manufacturing Company, where he worked for 37 years. He retired in 1981. During his employment,

began to die a slow death when he was assassinated. Although amen’s encouraged him to add, “There’s nothing wrong with saying that,” his remarks are open to discussion. Sadly, the irresponsible males Black women allude to as “deadbeat dads” See RESPONSIBILITY page 3

he also was an entrepreneur, and owned his business until well after retirement. He retired from his business in 1991. Bennie, who was preceded in death by his parents; first and second wife, Lola Fullson, enjoyed his retirement until his health failed. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, daughter, Jeanette Johnson; his brother, Riley Whitfield; grandchildren, Debra Giles and Lafate Giles; great-grandchildren, Norrita Wynder, Richele Henderson, Michele Henderson, and Tony Sanders, and joined them in heaven on July 23, 2007. He leaves to celebrate his life: sister, Lucille Dukes of Houston, Texas; brother, Willie Bass of Los Angeles, California; children, Mary Bass James Partner (Johnnie); son, Clinton Bass (Shellye); fourteen grandchildren, Larry, Rosalind, Marsha, Lynette, Thea Fantroy (Marcus), Millicent, Kevin, Kerry, Kenya Ernest (Robert), Kim, Clintnisha, and Robert; 34 great-grandchildren, and I4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. t’s a safe bet that today’s most Bible-illiterate, unchurched infidel has a working knowledge about Jesus the Christ’s plan of salvation that became a popular mantra during the futile “War on Drugs” that was fought mostly in the underserved, crime and drug- infested urban jungles in the land of the free. Denial notwithstanding, but when one listens to today’s made in America Africans’ most politically-astute intelligentsia, one can’t help but have cause to pause and ponder whether or not, they realize that a drug addict’s delusional mind is incapable of denial. Okay, we’re guilty. Yes, African- American News&Issues is playing mind games again. We Must Understand, there’s much wisdom in Thomas Carlyle’s assertion that “self-delusion is the most addictive drug known to mankind,” insofar as it’s tantamount to one being able to not only lie to others, but to themselves. If we have your attention so far, perhaps we should offer a disclaimer. As hard as we’re trying to be objective and not make this editorial politically subjective (although you know who we’re talking about), suffice it to say we’ve detected disturbing parallels between bipartisan politics and religious cults that defy logic. ince our editorial staff includes African griots that believe in the occult, i.e., Para normal phenomenon, black magic, voodoo (aka “who do” in the ‘hood), you can be assured that our newsroom briefings are more entertaining than those boring “reality shows” that proliferate TV networks these days. I can’t say exactly how other Black newspapers choose their news content, but apparently it isn’t the way we choose news and issues to publish. Although our critics will probably misconstrue it to be selfserving, I dare say that we choose our news differently because we strive to be a different kind of Black newspaper. In addition, I’m sure any moderately-informed Black reader will agree that they’ve already watched, heard, or read most of the news in Black publications. Accordingly, since the definition of news is: “Informal information of any kind that is not previously known to someone,” our living historians gave us an edge when we decided to report all news and issues without fear or favor from a historical Black perspective. The fact one must start with history to connect the dots, our living historians are on target so often until one would suspect that we have a crystal ball in our newsroom. As a result, even our most persistent critics can’t deny that we tell it like it is so long before any other media tell it. Truthfully, reporting news and issues from a Black perspective is the only thing that makes the Black press relevant. Perish the thought I’m trying to put down other Black news-

papers, because we don’t compete with them either. In fact, we share the same problem (finding talented journalists, who just happen to be Black enough to want to work for Black newspapers), as they do. Especially one history-astute enough to know the Black press’s original prime directive that’s vividly displayed at the top of this page. But our living historians realize that Black newspapers must be different to be relevant. In addition, BlackHistory literate African-Americans surely realize that Freedom Journal wasn’t published to compete with 1827 America’s mainstream media. Accordingly, the same things that made Black newspapers relevant 181 years ago, is exactly what makes them relevant to descendants of slaves today. In other words, our Black perspective makes old news relevant for our estimated 2.2 million readers and many millions more that visit our Web site each week at (www.aframnews.com), reading it for the first time. Nevertheless, our personal files are what make an educated guess appear to be prophecy. For instance, we’re predicting that in the near future most of the state’s failing minority schools will be privatized into the education conglomerate, KIPPS. We also predict that Dr. Rod Paige and Sen. Rodney Ellis will be part of the conspiracy. Why so? Prophecy aside, let’s start with Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) history in a 1999 Houston Chronicle that revealed: “The debate preceding the 5-4 vote largely centered on whether the Houston Independent School District’s plan consti-

monly defined as a fixed false belief and is used in everyday language to describe a belief that is false. As pathology, it is distinct from a belief based on false or incomplete information or certain effects of perception. Delusions typically occur in the context of neurological or mental illness. On the other hand, denial is simply a refusal to acknowledge; a disclaimer of connection with; a disavowal. Accordingly, dare we suggest that theocratic nations listening to America’s “hawkish” leadership igno-ranting “God bless America” have to conclude that we’re delusional, rather than in denial. Especially, when there’s no denying that the USA is often compared to Sodom & Gomorrah. Evil Empire notwithstanding, that thought came to mind after reading an article (US among the most Bible-literate nations), in an April 28, 2008 Reuters News Service release that revealed: “Americans are among the world’s most ‘Bible-literate’ people and Spaniards, French and Italians are among the most ignorant about what the “good book” says, according to a new study released on Monday. “A poll also showed Americans were most willing to donate money to spread the message of the Bible. Americans were the largest group

oebeit I’m the last person to discuss sensitive topics that reopen the unhealed wounds that chattel slavery inflicted on The Outer Limits of my made in American African brothers and sister’s fragile psyche. Especially at a time I’ve experience another cycle of imposing my will on copy editors wont to sanitize my Eyeview for public consumption following an outcry over how proudly I use the N-word. Dare I even mention my demeaning analogy “raising Pickannanies for the plantation?” For sure, for an old African warrior famous for having “long nuts,” that’s sho’ nuff tantamount to intellectual castration. Censorship notwithstanding, if you’ve reading this, mayhaps, Fox News made “nuts” acceptable enough to use in my column head. That’s why I dared use it instead of Political Eunuchs II. If you don’t remember the two previous Political Eunuch’s Eyeviews just keep reading. Then again, mayhaps, it’s best I just stop sharing the innermost expressions nestled in The Twilight Zone of my cranial system that earned me five NNPA Best Column Awards (when they included a cash prize), and even one from the Houston Press. However, that’s a decision I’ll make in the first week of September when my expiring contract with the good Lord could, indeed,

end my 56-year-career as a journalist. Hell, I’m tired of trying to make shallow-minded folks understand that to be different one must be different. But, alas, I’ll allow myself to be neutered by folks who can’t grasp the concept that my gift isn’t writing, but expression. In fact, the late great Aldine Carver debate coach Thomas Gray told me that back in 1952. And Dr. Thomas Freeman sanctified his opinion at TSU in 1953. Yet, I’ve had to fight to maintain my gift of expression throughout my 56-year-career. “What up” with silly dilly brothers and sisters that say stupid things such as, “If the White folks hear us use that word, they feel free to use it?” That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Then again, I think much like ghetto dogs that pee on trees in the ‘hood to mark their turf. Mayhaps, you folks (with lap dogs that live in the house, and/or even sleep in the bed with their masters), will snap and figure out where I’m coming from later. Even so, if you’re ever driving through what’s left of Da’ Big Nickel (Houston, Texas’s Fifth Ward community), be forewarned not to let your dog out to relieve itself on trees that you’ve seen dogs in the ‘hood pee on. Meanwhile, can we talk about castration? I was listening to erstwhile freedom fighter/ City Council Pro Tem Rev. Jew

tutes a voucher program, which has been stirring political controversy throughout the nation. “Superintendent Rod Paige argued that the plan is merely an expansion of the district’s contract services, which already include charter and privately run schools for special alternative education and relief from overcrowding.” I’ll save space, because the recent HISD school bond battle is still fresh in your mind. So let’s fast forward to July 1, 2008 and read: “Stealth Vouchers: Texas Education Agency is wrong to try to route state funds to private schools in defiance of the Legislature. The Texas Legisla-

ture has repeatedly rejected voucher programs that would use public funds to send children to private schools. Despite those clear statements of legislative intent, the Texas Education Agency seems determined to do exactly that. It has devised a pilot program to entice dropouts to private classroom. “The TEA has no right to institute a voucher program that the state’s legislators have repeatedly rejected.” Ironically, in the same edition there was an article on North Forest’s mess. In fact, it shared space with: “The Knowledge is Power Program debuted a new charter school in the East End on Monday

who said they had a Bible at home (93 percent) and the French were the lowest (48 percent). The French were the most opposed to teaching the Bible in schools whereas the Americans were split about evenly.” Woebeit we’re all in this together, no sane person can deny that we no longer can be considered the good guys after President George W. Bush’s preempted strike on Iraq for an ungodly reason. Yet, Bibleliterate Americans truly believe that our sin-sick nation won’t ultimately suffer God’s wrath the same as every other evil nation throughout biblical history. Closer to home, for some insane reason, “highly blessed, and favored” born-again Black Christians have deluded themselves to believe that God favors poor, Black believers over rich White believers, therefore He has sent us a messiah. Denial aside, Black preachers of the gospel that’s espousing that God has sent our people a Black messiah, would better serve their malleable-minded congregants if they reminded them that Jesus’s followers had a chance to vote before He was crucified. And surely, history could repeat on Nov. 4, 2008 if apathetic Black voters allow the political powerful status quo, that don’t want Change We Can Believe In shout…“Give us (a fighting man like) Barabbas?”

Don Boney lament about politically-apathetic Black folks on Kamau Obidike’s Sunday night (911 p.m.) KPFT (90.1 FM) radio talk show “Self Determination,” so I called to suggest that fear render our males impotent. Boney asked, “Are you talking impotent in sexual terms?” I assured him that’s exactly where I was coming from, insofar as, in spite of their ability to perform, they allow fear to render them totally impotent. Hey, since I’ve often called brothers political eunuchs in the past, a disconnect was imminent. Mayhap you recall me comparing safe brothers working within the system to castrated male slaves that wary rulers allowed to work in their abodes? For sure, I have no desire to castigate Black faces in high places. Nevertheless, I’m called nuts because I have enough nuts and guts to tell it like is. Hence, there’s no shame in my game when I say that brothers that become impotent when they fear (losing their privilege to swill at the public troth, or Massa’s 30 pieces of silver) subjugate their manhood. Accordingly, I resent 2008 Black America’s younger generation of political eunuchs that must be nuts to think older African warriors envy their access to the masssa’s house. I wonder if anybody knows where I’m coming from? To contact Bud Johnson, please call 281- 847-9929 (8-5- Wednesday -Thursday) or via e-mail at Africanwarrior@aol.com

and announced plans to open at least four more campuses in Houston next year as part of its $100 million expansion effort. The rapid growth keeps KIPP on track with a plan officials announced last year to grow to 42 Houston-area campuses with 21,000 students in the next decade. At that point, roughly 10 percent of all Houston students would attend a KIPP school.” But let’s cut to the chase, because I will definitely keep our readers abreast of any future news that you have to read between the lines. aren’t likely to be “turning off the TV set,” or “attending parent-teacher conferences.” Irony aside, Rev. Jesse Jackson’s “nut cutting” remark rescued Obama, who fails to realize why made in America Africans questioned his Blackness. For sure, Black and proud people (enamored with Obama becoming the first Black president), are doing him a disservice not to explain there’s a vast difference in just being Black, than it is to be poor, Black and illiterate in America. Accordingly, when Obama chose to explain, “If I’ve been too tough on folks talking about responsibility. NAACP, I’m here to report, I’m not going to stop talking about it,” he was preaching to the choir. He was talking to those who will benefit when he “fight to make sure that government’s doing its job and the marketplace is doing its job,” because they, indeed, have their “own stuff” to take care of. He, of course, was responding to Rev. Jesse Jackson’s comments about his Father’s Day speech that set off a chain of discord that validates the mythical Willie Lynch’s “How To Make a Slave” prophecy. Telling it like it is aside, Sen. Obama’s speech revealed a much deeper problem (See Editorial), impacting 2008 Black America. Surely, our Black perspective makes our editorial suspect, but Obama’s spokeswoman Linda Douglas lends validity to our premises, insofar as she insulted Black America’s intelligence, as well as Obama’s when she explained: “It’s not just a speech aimed at Black audiences. It’s aimed at all parents. This is a larger theme of responsibility.” Even so, Obama would be wise not to buy into misconceptions about Black males, sans validation. Our mission to invalidate often espoused misconceptions (e.g., the popular idea that there are more Black males in prisons than colleges) should make our Web site, www.aframnews.com, aspiring Black politicos’ first stop. Then again, the photo of Morehouse College’s grads isn’t part of the prison/college equation that excludes HBCU’s from their distorted study that Black America consider gospel. Morehouse is only one of several Black colleges that are ignored. Not to mention that the Abstract of Black America validates that the nation’s military, police, or fire departments, and every other human resources agency germane to a society’s survival are filled with responsible men, who just happen to be Black. Cutting to the chase, Black Americans should rise up in righteous indignation when Black males are disparaged unfairly. Responsibility is an ideal

espoused by descendants of “robber barons,” like John D. Rockefeller Jr., who once said: “We must instill a sense of duty in our children; every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty.” However, Dr. John H. Sklare, Ed.D concludes: “To accept personal responsibility, we must first define responsibility. It is very difficult to develop an adequate ability to accept responsibility without a preliminary effort to define responsibility. Fritz Perls, the father of gestalt therapy, often rewrote responsibility as ‘responseability.’ By this, he meant that a basic given in life is that we all have the ability to personally respond – ‘response-ability.’ It’s when you lose sight of this basic, elementary fact that you feel the most lost and hopeless in the struggle for personal responsibility.” Keep hope alive aside, according to the tenets of democracy educating citizens is the government’s responsibility. Access www.usinfo. state.gov to validate: “Education is a universal human right. It also is a means of achieving other human rights and it is an empowering social and economic tool. Through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s nations have agreed that everyone has the right to education. Every society transmits its habits of mind, social norms, culture, and ideals from one generation to the next. There is a direct connection between education and democratic values: in democratic societies, educational content and practice support habits of democratic governance. “This educational transmission process is vital in a democracy because effective democracies are dynamic, evolving forms of government that demand independent thinking by the citizenry. The opportunity for positive social and political change rests in citizens’ hands. Governments should not view the education system as a means to control information and to indoctrinate students.” Meanwhile, it’s politically-astute Black America’s responsibility to ignore a bias media’s effort to divide and confuse us with issues that have absolutely nothing to do with voting for a “Change We Can Believe In” on Nov. 4, 2008.

girls suffer in silence, but their pain is often manifested in relationships with men throughout the course of their lives. We all agree that any grown man who would recruit young girls to use them as objects of sexual pleasure should be punished. And while a jury acquitted Kelly, the vast majority of Black folks (I’ll say it), truly believe that he is guilty, sick and needs professional help. Let’s be real. If R. Kelly was a rich White man and he was acquitted notwithstanding videotaped evidence, we would be up in arms as a community. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. White folks use the power of their wealth to manipulate the justice system all the time. You are thinking that no one should be offended when a Black man does it.

Study reveals lack of minority females on corporate boards HOUSTON– Dr. Laureen Wishom, of Masterpiece Solutions, LLC, concluded her study of Houston’s top 50 boards and concluded that there was a lack of African-Amer- Laureen Wishom ican, Hispanic and Asian women in the boardroom. “While women have made significant strides in the corporate arena, we are still drastically underrepresented in the boardroom. Although many women feel like they lack the knowledge to sit at the table, women bring an infusion of experience, expertise, energy and innovative ideas. Having diversity on corporate boards will lead to better marketing strategies and enhanced corporate governance while maximizing a company’s financial performance” says Wishom. What if R. Kelly really was innocent of the charges hurled against him? Then he should be left alone to live his life in peace. And those that accused him wrongfully should be charged, tried and prosecuted. But, what if the jury was wrong? We do know that juries sometimes produce horrible verdicts. This is the basis for our many protests in the grand jury no billing of the Pasadena cowboy Joe Horn. We believe that when they no-billed Joe Horn, they put a murderer back out on the street in Texas. And if R. Kelly is really guilty they put a pedophile back out on the street in Illinois. We must be realistic. If R. Kelly was sent home guilty, then what message does that communicate to the sick pedophiles across this country? It sends the message that you can be as sick as you wish to be as long as you have the capital to hire great attorneys who know how to manipulate this justice system. It says that if you plan on preying on young girls you’d better stack your paper (save your money). It empowers and emboldens them into a belief that you can be caught on tape and still go free. I am sure that many child molesters were following the case with great focus and looking for new ways to get away with robbing our babies of their innocence. However, I take great comfort in knowing that there are two justice systems. There is one set up by

man and there is one set up by God. The system set up by man in imperfect and flawed, but the one set up by God is perfect and flawless. God’s justice system cannot be manipulated by money, power or crafty attorneys. At the end of the day, although the victim says that is not her on the tape, God knows. And if indeed Kelly is guilty, I pray that those around him demand that he get professional and real spiritual help, before his disease strikes again. The issue of female abuse and child molestation is bigger than R. Kelly and cannot be made to become acceptable to us as a people. Every Black father must take an oath to give his life to protect his daughter from the sick predators that lurk the streets that we walk and roam the neighborhoods where we live. If we as a people will condemn child molestation, but in our minds excuse it if the perpetrator has money or is one of our favorite celebrities then we are no better than the justice system that we condemn. It is not my place to legislate innocence or guilt to Kelly. But as a father of two daughters, I am sensitive to these issues and believe that we need harsh laws to punish those who abuse our young girls. If R. Kelly is guilty, though he was acquitted by that Chicago jury, he still has to face that other system of justice. Respect and protect the Black female…by any means necessary.

Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra, Abbott oversees a four-person team and earned a base salary last year of $162,802. Abbott plans to build a national public relations business with Adriana Villarreal, his former deputy press secretary who left HISD two years ago to start her own firm.” Maybe I don’t have the gift of prophecy, but my educated guess is that Ellis will be involved with KIPP that will hire Dr. Paige’s consultant firm and Abbott will be the hired gun that shoots down the opposition.

Then, in 2001, after President George Bush named Paige the secretary of education, Abbott joined his boss in Washington, D.C., for two-anda-half years. Now, under HISD

Are Children Cursed?

Dear Mr. Johnson, this is concerning your article (Are Children Cursed?, Vol. 13 Issue 23). Is it all about using children in a way that God never intended: 1) sexual partners 2) soldiers 3) workers, etc. When you misuse something, it becomes damaged and not fit to carry out their original purpose. Abuse of children is a terrible thing and it continues to happen globally as these broken children become broken adults. Only

expand your opportunities

God can stop it if He wants to and it will take generations to see the results...however, when I think of all the children who suffered in the old world and those who suffer today, I still cling to hope. I believe in the love of God for us and the resiliency of our young ones. It is not what is done to you that defines who are: it is how you treat yourself and others. God’s grace is sufficient, no matter what the children of the world goes through. Coletha Albert Houston, TX

Pastor Burrell also serves as Assistant Director of Jail Chaplaincy Ministry (a ministry serving Harris and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept./Jail). Burrell began serving in jail ministry as a volunteer three decades ago. The Jail Chaplaincy Ministry started as an outreach to meet the spiritual needs of both men and women incarcerated in the Harris County jail facilities. It offers religious services, Bible study and other services including AA programs. Chaplaincy staff and volunteers are available primarily for followers of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths, however, they make every possible attempt to coordinate with other faiths upon request. According to a Justice Policy Institute study, the number of people in American jails has nearly doubled since 1990 as the facilities detain more drug offenders, mentally ill and criminals sentenced to prisons. In April, The Harris County Jail held about 10,400 inmates, 1,000 beyond its capacity. Burrell believes that many of these inmates, especially males, can be short-stopped with intervention by proper role-models. Hence, “The Young Men of Valor” conference is made up of local speakers and entertainment, roundtable discussions and interactive counseling. The concept is based on the Bible scripture found in I Samuel 16:17-18 which states, “So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.’ One of the servants answered, ‘I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him.’” Burrell said, “Over the years, I have counseled and shared with hundreds of young men who have expressed

the desire to have known someone who could have been a positive mentor in their lives. The goal of ‘Young Men of Valor’ conference is to provide an opportunity to help fill a social, emotional and spiritual vacuum for teen boys and young adult men. We also want to serve as a preventive against the growing crime rate, suicide, drugs, gangs, tears, pain, scars, sorrow, incarceration and even death among our young men.” Pastor Burrell and his wife, Kathy have served in ministry for over 25 years. He has a heart for God’s people and a passion for preaching and teaching the infallible Word of God. His vision for church ministry reflects how Jesus ministered while on planet earth, ministering to the “total” person. That is the promise he gives his parishioners at Internal Hope Fellowship Church, currently meeting at the Forest Bend Civic Building, Townes @ Laura Leigh. There visitors will find the theme to be true, “Spreading Hope In An Uncertain World” along with teaching truth, bringing hope and restoring lives. The Burrells have three adult sons, one daughterin-law, two grandsons and a new granddaughter. Burrell attended the University of Houston and the College of Biblical Studies. He is an alumnus of Billy Graham’s School of Evangelism and E.K. Bailey’s International Expository Preaching Conferences. In talking about the upcoming event, the “Silver Award” recipient for outstanding Christian Leadership in the community and board member for Youth Reach-Houston states, “We want to draw a racially and socially diverse mix of teen boys and young adult men who may be reaching out for help and guidance or who may simply need encouragement to keep on a positive course in life. At the conference, attendees will
