HOUSTON – O’Rourke, Abrams to run for governor in Texas, Georgia. They say things are hot in the south, well, when it comes to politics, it’s about to be scorching. That’s because two major announce-
ments for gubernatorial seats in Texas and Georgia are about to make 2022 “one for the record books.” Earlier this month, former congressman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’ Rourke launched his cam-
paign to run for governor of Texas. O’Rourke tweeted, “Together, we can push past the small and divisive politics that we see in Texas today -- and get back to the big, bold vision that used to define a Texas big enough for
all of us.” O’Rourke has become a person that many millennials have connected with. So what is the draw? Well, he is an El Paso native and former punk rocker who launched an internet services com-

Too Many Unnecessary Laws
America, it is impossible to legislate personal morality, because the law is no more just than those who are responsible for the administration of the law (s). Only the Holy Spirit (TRUTH) can free us from sin: lying, stealing, and killing. Sin is sin, and there are no little or big sins. As an American citizen you are privileged and entitled to experience all of the privileges/ blessings of citizenship. Even though there have always been some individuals who have never embraced the spiritual/moral tenets of The Preamble and the U. S. constitution (Cain’s Children). The Holy Spirit frees US from sin and eternal condemnation, and: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For
what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8: 1-4). Free-will is a spiritual principle of GOD, and no man or legal system can destroy a principle of God. This is why Roe V. Wade was an unnecessary law, and no male should seek to morally regulate a woman’s body. There are no laws regulating the pleasure principle of the bodies of males. The Jewish people had (613) Hebraic manmade laws and they could not abide by their own laws created for themselves. Moses had a spiritual encounter with God on Mount Sinai, and God reduced the (613) manmade laws to the Ten (spiritual) Commandments; even though sin waxed exceedingly. Jesus reduced the Ten to Two, and they cannot live by the TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS. God always gives the word (TRUTH), and this is why we have had tremendous calamities such as: Noah and the Ark, Sodom and Go-

morrah, the battle of Jericho, and the January 6th, 2021 riot: an attempt to over throw American democracy. Throughout all of our trials, and tribulations had it not been for God on our side with his grace, and mercy where would we be? It certainly was not manmade laws that brought us safely through our sinful trials and tribulations. It was the divine grace and mercy of Almighty God; not manmade laws. Since we now know that it is not about manmade laws; but God’s will, what are we going to do now? Nations Rise: Nations Fall; but God’s Will, shall be done on earth as it is in heaven. America, here’s precisely what we should do, because: “If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (1 John 1: 7). God is the Divine Law, and Jesus is the Divine Sacrifice; therefore: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye are healed.

Think About It By Dr. John E. Warren
Preparing for Coming Changes While many are watching developing court cases and the treatment of Blacks and people of color as both victims and perpetrators in the judicial system, we must not lose sight of the coming changes around us designed to both distract and disable. I speak specifically of the following: (1) the redistricting or redesigning of all the Electoral Districts in the United States, based on the 2020 Census; (2) the new Voter Suppression laws in over 22 states restricting voting hours, locations, and conduct while waiting to vote; (3) the local campaigns against Critical Race Theory resulting in the removal of books in school libraries and restrictions on how issues of race can be taught; and (4) a very close look at all people running for office in 2022 and where they actually stand on the issues just mentioned.
The Conservative Right, with all its Trump supporters, is counting on low voter turnout as a result of the abovementioned restrictions. They are also putting those who are in agreement with them in key positions within each state’s vote count and certification process. The greatest weapon we have is our ability to engage the process at every level. We must now start serious voter registration; we must now look very closely at the new electoral boundaries and changes in all districts, from Congressional Districts to State Legislative, County, Municipal, and School Board Districts. We must start now and begin looking at the impact of these proposed changes. In some cases, it is already too late to engage the Redistricting Commissions for final changes. Many of these commissions sought to use the internet as a substitute for outreach and citizen engagement in the process. Many of these commissions, both here and around the country, were appointing and stacking the commissions even before the Bureau of the Census released its report.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY
JOSEPHINE BAKER BECOMES FIRST BLACK WOMAN HONORED AT THE PANTHEON IN PARIS By: Nevaeh Richardson
The late-great Josephine Baker is well-known France and Europe, but never quite received her flowers while alive in America, where she was born. We know much of her legacy through a movie about her life, starring Lynn Whitfield, but many of us were not taught about the woman who used her stardom as a 1920s singer and exotic dancer to become a wartime spy and fierce advocate for civil rights, who also spoke at the 1963 March on Washington. We take this moment to honor her in this week’s “Know Your History.” T h e legendary performer from Saint L o u i s , Missouri was recently granted one of France’s highest
honors: A tomb in the Pantheon in Paris, the country’s monument to its heroes. There have been only 80 people granted the honor since the tradition began in Napoleonic times. Baker is the first Black woman honored at the Pantheon, according to the Elysee Palace. She is also only the sixth woman, which includes scientist Marie Curie and politician Simone Veil. Though her body remains buried in Monaco at the request of her family, a coffin was entombed at the site bearing handfuls of dirt from four important locations in her life -- Saint-Louis, Paris, Milandes -- the site of her chateau home -- and Monaco. The date of her interment also holds significance, marking the anniversary of when she received French citizenship in 1937. Freda Josephine McDonald was born on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri. Her mother, Carrie, was adopted in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1886 by Richard and Elvira
McDonald, both of whom were former slaves of African and Native American descent. She spent her early life in the Mill Creek Valley neighborhood of St. Louis, a racially
mixed low-income neighborhood near Union Station, consisting mainly of rooming houses, brothels, and apartments without indoor plumbing. She was poorly dressed
and hungry as a child, and developed street smarts playing in the railroad yards of Union Station.

4 AFRAMNEWS.COM Governor cont’d pany. He served on the city council before being elected to Congress in 2011 -- and is now making his third run for office in four years. His first statewide run in Texas against Republican Ted Cruz in 2018, electrified Democrats, where the party has rarely been competitive for a generation. He founded and currently leads Powered by People, a Texas-based organization that works to expand democracy and produce Democratic victories through voter registration and direct voter engagement. Powered by People has helped register over 250,000 unregistered Texans to vote since its inception in December 2019. He rose from little-known congressman to fundraising dynamo, setting what, at the time, was the all-time record for money raised for a Senate bid. And he did it with a relatively barebones campaign structure, mostly driving himself to campaign events across the state with two staffers and live-streaming it all on Facebook. When he didn’t get the senate seat, he ran for president, and now he is in it to win it as governor in 2022. For many Texas Democrats, O’ Rourke could be the party’s only chance of denying Abbott a third term. A lot of Democratic hopes are riding on O’Rourke this election cycle, but few may be more consequential to the party’s future in Texas than his ability to stave off a strong GOP offensive in South
December 5, 2021 Texas. Emboldened by President Joe Biden’s underwhelming performance throughout the predominantly Hispanic region last year, Republicans have been pushing hard to make new inroads there, and O’Rourke faces an incumbent who has been working for years to win Hispanic voters. Abbott has put an emphasis on South Texas since his first gubernatorial campaign in 2014, and he has been increasingly traveling there in recent months, both in his official capacity and for political appearances. Carney said it will become “c r y s t a l clear” after the holidays that Abbott will be traveling to South Texas frequently. If O’Rourke wants to beat Abbott, in addition to grabbing the Hispanic vote, he needs to focus on addressing food and gas prices, Roe v. Wade and the coronavirus. And in Georgia, Stacey Abrams has once again set the state on fire. In an announcement that has provided a jolt to the 2022 midterm elections, Abrams said she’s running for governor of the Peach State. The race, which could mean a second dual be-
tween Abrams and Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, promises to catapult Democrats into the position of favorites. A Democrat and noted voting rights advocate, Abrams lost to Kemp by just over one percentage point in their controversial 2018 battle. Her activism helped Democrats claim the majority in the U.S. Senate when Georgia Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff defeated Republicans Kelly
Loeffler and David Perdue in the January 2021 runoff election. “I’m running because opportunity in our state shouldn’t be determined by zip code, background, or access to power,” Abrams declared. “That’s the job of the governor – to fight for one Georgia, our Georgia,” Abrams exclaimed. “And now, it is time to get the job done.” Abrams’s work since her 2018 loss to Kemp has received praise across the political spectrum. In 2019, she launched Fair Count and Fair Fight Action to

She said G e o r gia’s 2018 elections “shone a bright light on the issue with elections that were rife with mismanagement, irregularities, unbelievably long lines and more, exposing both recent and also decades-long actions and inactions by the state to thwart the right to vote.” “Fair Fight Action was founded to organize collective efforts to expose, mitigate, and reverse voter suppression. In 2018, Abrams became the Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia, winning more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history. She broke the glass ceiling as the first Black woman to become the gubernatorial nominee for a major party in the United States and as the first Black woman and first Georgian to deliver a Response to the State of the Union. “It’s a very humbling experience to know that if I win this election, I would have achieved something that Black women as far back as Barbara Jordan and Shirley Chisholm has fought about, not necessarily the same job, but transforming how we think about leadership in America and physically claiming that mantle of leadership and holding it signals that anything is possible, and we can re-define what leadership looks like and who we can lift up,” Abrams said in a 2018 interview with the Black Press of America. If Abrams is successful, she would become the first Black governor of Georgia and the first Black woman to serve as governor of any state. If elected, O’Rourke would be the first Democrat to serve as Texas’ governor since Gov. Dorothy Ann Willis Richards in 1995, though the traditionally conservative-leaning state has become increasingly more purple in recent years. - AANI

NEW FOOD INSECURITY BOARD LAUNCHED TO FIGHT HUNGER IN HOUSTON
By: Nevaeh Richardson
Council Member Edward Pollard announced the establishment of the new Food Insecurity Board, which was approved by a unanimous vote by Houston City Council. The Houston Food Insecurity Board will be an effective and comprehensive approach to addressing the issue of food insecurity by providing policy suggestions, guidance, and best practices to policymakers. Over 738,000 Houstonians have little to no access to healthy food, and 360,000 children in Harris County are experiencing
food insecurity. This includes over 500,000 Houstonians living in “food deserts” with little to no access to healthy food. Because of the pandemic, the Houston Food Bank distributes 1,000,000 pounds of food per day, compared to 450,000 pounds a day before COVID-19. After Winter Storm Uri, this number spiked to 1,200,000 pounds of food per day as mass distributions took place in worship spaces, schools, and parking lots throughout the city. “Over the past year and a half, I have all been involved in numerous food distr ibution
drives. I am continuously in awe of how many people wait for hours for basic food items. This drove me to find solutions to the food needs of our city and issues related to the root cause,” Pollard said. “In collaboration with the Minaret Foundation, I learned that Houston was one of the only major cities in the country that did not have a Food Insecurity Board. As such, my office worked diligently in order to create this board before the new year so we could begin 2022 ensuring that this issue would be a top priority at city hall.” The Food Insecurity Board
will consist of 19 members, who will each serve one-year terms, with the first term expiring on January 2, 2023. The members include: Shariq Abdul Ghani (Chair of the Board), Valhalla Clack, Billyssia Pierce, Gabrielle S. Dirden, Warren B. Luckett, Kandace Cooks, Charmaine A. LeBlanc, Sandra
Rodríguez, Vipin Kumar, Zahoor A. Gire, Rudy Rasmus, Kathy Flanagan-Payton, Megan Hoag, Shannon G. Strother, Nipa Kamdar, Katherine H. Byers, Daphne C. Hernandez, Tanweer Kaleemullah, and Lisa Helfman. Within the first two years, the Food Insecurity Board is expected to focus on key
food, nutrition, and agriculture policy issues and opportunities that are affected by government and legislation; create recommended policy priorities that best suit the needs of Houston, with an emphasis on community food security; and educate the public and policymakers about food system. - AANI
6 AFRAMNEWS.COM Curley cont’d ball and then in wrestling, winning state high school titles as a heavyweight in 1963 and 1964. He was recruited to Arizona State University to play both sports. At Arizona State, Culp amassed a 84-111 record, three Western Athletic Conference championships, and was the 1967 NCAA heavyweight champion, winning the Gorriaran Award for scoring the most falls at the Division I championships. Under legendary Arizona State football coach Frank Kush, Culp played nose guard, including on the 1967 team that allowed opponents an average of only 79.8 yards per game. He won AllAmerica honors in football as well as wrestling. The Denver Broncos drafted Culp in the second round of the 1968 NFL Draft, but considered v. him too small for the defensive line at 6’1” and 265 lbs. After trying him at guard, they dealt him during training camp to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick (Mike Schnitker). He played for Kansas City for seven seasons, appearing in 82
December 5, 2021 games, achieving nine sacks in 1973 with nine QB takedowns, and also recovering five fumbles during his career with the team. Culp’s role as a nose tackle in the pros actually took root in Super Bowl IV, where he was a starting defensive tackle. Chiefs coach Hank Stram, in an attempt to nullify the Minnesota Vikings’ quick outside rushing attack, decided to line Culp directly nose-tonose with Vikings center, Mick Tingelhoff. The smaller Tingelhoff could not block Culp one-on-one and had to be helped by the other linemen. This freed teammates Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, and other Chiefs de-
fenders to get into the Vikings offensive backfield and shut down their running game. The effectiveness of the Chiefs’ defensive game plan helped continue the growing popularity of the 3-4 scheme in the 1970s from the college to pro ranks. When Culp arrived in
Houston, Bum Phillips was the defensive coordinator for Sid Gillman. He had convinced the head coach to try a 3-4 defense, employing three down linemen and four linebackers, eschewing the standard 4-3 fronts of the day. In basically an e x -
change of defensive tackles who had threatened to jump to the World Football League, the Oilers acquired Culp and a first-round draft choice in 1975 from the Chiefs for John Matuszak on Octo-
ber 22, 1974. Both Culp and Matuszak had signed contracts with the Southern California Sun and Shreveport Steamer respectively. It became known as one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history,[6] made worse for the
Chiefs when the Oilers selected Robert Brazile with the draft pick. Culp was so strong he required two and three players to block him, opening lanes for Elvin Bethea, Gregg

As Phillips later said, “Curley made (the 3-4 defense) work. He made me look smart.” As a nose tackle, injuries and age began to take their toll. Midway through the 1980 season, Culp was released and was claimed by Detroit, where he stayed an additional season before closing out his 14-year NFL career. So great was his impact that the Sporting News named Culp to the All-Century teams of both the Kansas City and Houston/ Tennessee franchises. Hall-Of-Famer center
Jim Otto of the Raiders called him “perhaps the strongest man I ever lined up against”. Culp is regarded as the NFL’s greatest nose tackle. He played a total of 13 seasons in the AFL/NFL and was selected to a total of six
AFL All-Star Games or Pro Bowls. He was twice honored as the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Week. In 1975, he won All-Pro honors and was chosen NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Newspaper Enterprise Association and as such received the George S. Halas Trophy. He was inducted into the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame at its inception in 1975 and was named Greatest Athlete in the history of Arizona during the state’s centennial in 2006. Culp is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs 25-Year All-Time Team, and in March 2008 was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame. In 2012, the Professional Football Researchers Association named Culp to the PRFA Hall of V e r y G o o d Class of 2012. On August 3, 2013, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Culp announced on November 16, 2021, that he had been diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. He died eleven days later. - AANI
