GREATER HOUSTON EDITION
Why Is There Constant Friction Between Blacks and Whites? Today, there seems to be a lot of racial tension across the nation, especially between Whites and Blacks. One could blame this tension on slavery, or even White supremacy. It has been approximately 400 years since the beginning of slavery, and some people would say our nation has come a long way. Blacks are no longer enslaved, Blacks and Whites are no longer separated, Black people can vote, and a host of other things. However, racism seems to be more alive now than ever. Today, hate still permeates through the souls of many. One example of this is the Buffalo shooting that occurred on May 14, 2022. A White man, 18 years old, killed ten Black people who were shopping at a Supermarket. The act of violence was intentional as he drove more than 200 miles to reach the predominantly Black community to kill as many Black people as he could.
For so long, blacks have suffered not only from racism, but from inequality such as not being able to vote. The Civil Rights Movement was a major turning point in history for blacks. Blacks have a lot to be grateful for because of certain civil rights leaders who demanded change for the black race. One of those leaders was the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose legacy still carries on today. With everything going on in the world today, one could say that history is repeating itself. The killings of Blacks, the looting, the protests, racial slurs, and white supremacy, just to name a few. The question that Blacks have yet to receive an answer for, and many others, is why? One reason to this question is cultural. Blacks and Whites simply do not understand one another. Because of the long tension between Blacks and Whites, the two cultures do not communicate with one another, do not take the time to learn about each other’s cultures and differences. In addition, many Whites, not all, think they are superior to blacks, and if one race feels superior, there will always be conflict. For more visit aframnews.com
How long is too Long ByTravis McGee
“Too Fast in SHouston, TX, Too Furious in Hazzard County” First, I would like to begin by offering my condolences to ALL the families who have lost loved ones due to “Reckless” disregard for human life driving. Second, I would like to say, “Our Lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. I believe our “Elected Employees” especially, have been both deaf and mute to all things
that affect us, while they are more concerned about losing endorsements than they are about their constituents losing their lives. Which is happening on an all too consistent basis, but with absolutely no representation. Right has all ways been right and wrong has always been wrong. We should all know and believe that our lives matter just as much as the lives of law enforcement, celebrities, those with titles and certain positions, and elected employees. We often hear our city and law enforcement officials only mentioning wanting law enforcement to make it home For more visit safely. aframnews.com

Where is the KKK? By: Roy Douglas Malonson
Hear me when I say that we have always been the most hated race in America! If you are living in a fantasy world and think otherwise, then you need to wake up. If we have learned anything in the last few years, it is that racism and discrimination are still alive. Have Black people made historical moments? Yes, but we have not made it, not even close. As we continue to navigate our way through life, we must never forget the most hateful group in America, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Founded as a terrorist organization towards the end of the United States Civil War (1865), the KKK used fear tactics against African Americans who were free. The main purpose of the KKK was to push White Supremacy as the “political and social” order for the south. There were rights that were put in place to protect African Americans, but the KKK did whatever they could to strip those rights away through violence. The KKK would beat,
lynch, burn crosses, bomb places, terrorize the homes of African Americans, and so much more. They also did whatever they could to block African Americans from voting. Does this sound familiar? The mission of the KKK was accomplished with the creation of the Jim Crow Laws (18751965) that made segregation legal. See, the KKK wanted us to be afraid of them simply because they were afraid of us. They feared a race that was so powerful. If only we could realize it. You may not see the KKK walking the streets in their White sheets and White hoods, but don’t fool yourself, they are still there. Angelia Williams Graves, a city council member, who spoke at an NAACP luncheon a few years back said, “Modern racist have taken off their white hats and white sheeted robes and put on police uniforms. Some of them have put on shirts and ties
as policy makers, and some of them have put on robes as judges.” When it comes to police officers, this makes sense because so many of them have put so many of our people behind bars. At the end of 2018, “There were 1,501 Black prisoners for
many police brutality incidents in the last few years alone, and sadly, many deaths have happened because of this. We will never forget the execution of George Floyd that happened on May 25, 2020, by Derek Chauvin. That incident alone shocked the nation,
every 100,000 Black adults,” according to the Pew Research Center. Sadly, this data does not include Black inmates who are behind local jail cells. The more Black people they lock up, the more Black votes they can count out. Also, if you lock up our Black males, they can not reproduce, which is what they want. With police, there have been too
but I don’t understand why. White people have been killing Blacks since slavery. This is just the truth finally being recorded. One organization outside the KKK are the Oath Keepers. They are a far-right antigovernment group, which was founded in 2009. They are the “Guardians of the Republic.” Their organization consists of “tens of thousands of present and former
law enforcement officials and military veterans. This could explain why there’s so much violence against Blacks, especially from those in uniforms. It’s amazing how some White people can go on a shooting spree and kill dozens of people, and yet walk away without a bruise or a scratch. So, the police do their part by either locking us away or killing us, and then if we make it alive to the courthouse, the judge does his or her part by putting us away for a long time. In 1981, Michael Donald was beaten, killed, and then lynched because the KKK “wanted to send a message to the Black community.” There was a Black man by the name of Josephus Anderson who was tried for killing a White police officer. The case ended in mistral, which only added fuel to the fire for the KKK. Incidents like this was the only justification the KKK needed to kill an innocent Black man. A life for
a life. The mother of Michael Donald, Beulah Mae Donald sued the United Klans of America for $10 million. “She was awarded $7 million by an all-white jury and the killers were convicted.” It was noted that her case bankrupted the United Klans of America. This act of bravery was bold and dangerous but fighting for her child meant so much more. Another group was the Dixiecrats (1948), who were a segregationist political party in the United States. Though they were short lived, their mission was to promote White supremacy and segregation. A more recent group is called the Proud Boys. Founded in 2016, they are far right and love to engage in violence, and their organization is exclusive to men. Over the years, they have gained national attention from their rallies and from being mentioned in a presidential debate in September 2020.

Kappa League Is Making A Difference By: Crystal LaShan Photo Credit: Randall McHenry
Kappa League was founded on Thursday, February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., at Alain LeRoy Locke High School. Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the 56th Grand Chapter, which was held August 12-15, 1970. The Kappa Instructional Leadership League founders were Mel L. Davis, an Elder Watson Diggs Awardee, and Edgar H. Bishop. Under the chairmanship of Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter’s Social Action Program took the form of a training activity for young men of the Alain Leroy Locke High School. The Kappa Instructional Leadership League was designed to help young men grow, receive, and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provided
both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhanced their lives. Membership was open to male students from the tenth through the twelfth grades. The National Kappa League has now grown to include high school young men from 9th– 12th grade. Kappa League’s national four major initiatives include college prep, college success, social active/ community, and positive vision. The College Prep National Kappa League program provides educational college readiness opportunities for its students. This program utilizes the following tools and activities to foster college enrollment and academic success such as Naviance, college signing day, virtual college tours, virtual college conversations, Black college expo collaboration, and common Black app. Mentor-

EDUCATION
Impact Leadership Academy By: Chelsea Davis-Bibb, Ed.D.
Principal Kegler speaking to fifth grade students. Last year, the Aldine Independent School District (AISD) launched its all-girl school called Aldine’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy. This fall, AISD will be launching the all-boy school called Impact Leadership Academy (ILA). According to Jonathan Kegler, who will serve as Principal of ILA stated that, “The purpose of ILA is to provide more choices and opportunities to families in AISD.” Most schools in an all-boy sector start their students in all gender schools in middle and high school. What makes ILA unique is that they’re providing this opportunity for students starting in first grade. The exciting part about ILA is that any student who wants to attend can enroll. They are currently accepting students from AISD as well as students from the greater Houston area. The staff of ILA are
diligently calling prospective parents and letting them know about the campus and what they can expect from the academy. There are already a few students outside of AISD that are expected to attend in the fall. One of the elements that students will learn from ILA is leadership. Principal Kegler stated, “We want to provide an opportunity for people to be leaders. We truly believe that everyone has a leader within them, and we want to provide the environment that’s going to be conducive for that to happen.” Students of ILA will also be exposed to the college environment as ILA has partnered with Prairie View A & M University (PV). Students will have the opportunity to visit PV, sit in a classroom, “and begin with the end in mind.” Principal Kegler wants them to see the end result of where they want to be.
Additionally, one of ILA’s leadership strands is entrepreneurship, so aside from college, students will be exposed to the different aspects of entrepreneurship. “You get to pick and choose what you want to do, and we’re going to supply you with the skillset so that you can choose wisely.” Since the school is launching for the first time, students will be able to attend first, second and sixth grade for year one. By 2025-2026, the academy will serve grades one through eight. “We are projecting 125 students per grade level, however, if we have more than that, of course we are going to take them in. Our campus can hold
1400 to 1500 students…As they come, we’re going to build it,” he mentioned. One thing that parents, students, and the community can expect from Principal Kegler is “dynamic leadership,” and how he believes in “no box thinking.” He stated, “A lot of times we think outside the box, but when the conformity of the world and the pressures come, and it doesn’t’ work, we’re forced back into the box. We struck the match threw it in the box and burned it a long time ago.” For more visit aframnews.com
