PAVING THE WAY FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

“My mother always wanted me to teach, and believe it or not, at a young age, she wanted me to be a college president,” said Dr. Stephen C. Head, Chancellor of Lone Star College (LSC). Growing up, Dr. Head’s family moved around a lot due to his father’s job, and he spent a lot of time reading as a kid and playing sports. No matter where his family lived, he was always into the history. After he enrolled into college, he started out in engineering, and then went into business. His dad even wanted him to be an engineer because he worked in the oil business, but “history was just a natural thing to me,” he

Married with two children during the last year of his doctoral program, Dr. Head took a recruiting job at Texas Tech thinking he would just do it part time. He served in this role for a little while and received a few promotions. He then moved back home and interviewed for Director of Financial Aid at Lone Star College-North Harris. He served in this role for a few years and shortly after became a dean. Three years later, he became president of a college at a very young age. “I had just turned 38 or so, which was

HCPA PRESENTS REIGN

Black Excellence. Black Opulence. Black Royalty. That was the vibe and energy in the room at REIGN. Gentlemen Noire and LaVie beautifully curated the night with precise detail and care which was evident when you walked into the room. Everyone was dressed to the nine in tailored suits and beautiful gowns that would make our ancestors proud.

It was everyone’s time to REIGN. Mission Accomplished. The Houston Caribbean Professionals Association’s (HCPA)Annual Scholarship Fundraiser was a glamourous tribute to grace and class. Henke and Pilot was the perfect venue to create the ambiance of a celebratory night of community achievements, culture, dance, art, and fashion. HCPA’s Education Committee’s goal is to raise $10,000 for their scholarship fund.

HCPA formed in 2016, is a non-profit organization of Caribbean-heritage individuals who look to connect with like-minded persons who are ready to challenge the status quo and commit to supporting, empowering, and celebrating members’ achievements while fostering sincere relationships that impact our Houston and their shared heritage communities abroad.

A Revival of God Consciousness

Criticism Is Easy: Cooperation Is Difficult

It is easy to criticize because criticism does not require spiritual fore thought or work. The devil is working (24/7) for himself and against all of US. On the other hand, God is the author of peace, “and God is not the author of confusion, but peace” (1 Corinthians 14: 33). Moreover, God desires that “all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14: 40).

Cooperation is much more difficult to achieve because it requires a commitment to work together to achieve stated lofty ideals, objectives, and goals. Unfortunately, GOP critics usually have no positive solutions to problem solving, but they have become professionals at criticism and cynicism concerning everything and doing absolutely nothing to solve anything.

Individuals who foment grievance and ungodly criticism are playing with hellfire.

It appears that Christian Right Evangelicals, The GOP, White Nationalists,

EDITORIAL

Fox “FAKE” News, and some spiritually misguided Blacks and other minorities have not read these words of spiritual inspiration. “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the way of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1: 1-2). Know this, God will not allow the Children of Cain to destroy a democratic multi-cultural society that has been the light of the world for human rights and human dignity. Thus, America, be still and see the salvation of the Lord, because God know, and we know that, “Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour” (Proverbs 14: 9). America, take heed and beware of covetousness, because the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, and we have not been good stewards, “because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were they thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1: 21-22).

Trellis Sykes’s Life Mattered Then and Still Matters Now

Year after year, one of the main complaints other than drainage and undrivable streets, illegal dumping, abandoned buildings, etc., are WEEDED LOTS! The city ordinance concerning weeded lots is a joke. The ordinance says the grass or weeds can’t exceed nine inches. However, some lots are well over 10 feet tall or taller. Even though residents are told time and time again to call 311 to report weeded lots, you may receive three hundred eleven excuses as to why they can’t be cut or have to wait three hundred and

eleven days before they finally get cut.

Weeded lots near senior citizens, churches, or schools are supposed to be priority but they haven’t been for decades. For example, you have HISD schools, Sunnyside elementary AKA, Young elementary, Attucks middle and Evan E. Worthing all with in a two-mile radius of student’s neighborhood or home, meaning the children attending these schools, don’t qualify for transportation to and from provided by the district.

One would think that neighborhoods with the highest registered sex offender count in Harris County other than licensed facilities which house them, that safety would be top priority. But it isn’t, not now nor twenty-eight years ago.

really young in our business for a short period.” At that time, Dr. Head was the youngest president in the state.

Being a college president is no easy task, and it requires a lot of hard work, but for Dr. Head, working hard is just something he does. “I just worked hard. I always liked working. I always got along with the faculty, staff, and others, and every time we had a problem someplace, I volunteered to fix it.” Most of

the problems he faced were either money problems or people problems, “and those were two pretty easy things for me to resolve.”

In 2014, Dr. Head became the Chancellor of LSC. Ironically, he wasn’t going to do it. He had previously applied for the chancellor position when his predecessor, Richard Carpenter was chosen, but he had never really wanted to be a college president. It was others who were telling him, “You need to do that,” and “we want you to be

this.” Outside of doing it for the people, his wife, Dr. Linda H ead, who insisted that he apply for chancellor, and he did at the very last hour. It was never about doing the job as to why he was reluctant to apply, he truly enjoyed his life and family, and enjoyed being at the campus. On campus, “he could see the students and see the community,” which is what he loved.

Because Dr. Head had been at LSC for 30 years prior to becoming chancellor, and had served in every capacity, he was more than prepared and ready to be chancellor. When reflecting on how long he has been with LSC, he jokingly said, “I know why the light switches are put in certain places and why some of the room numbers are off in a couple of places. Got to be there to know that right?” Many people wanted Dr. Head to become chancellor because they knew him, they knew he was going to be “fair, consistent, and not do crazy, wild things.”
