BLACK JOURNALISTS SNEAKER NIGHT By: N. L. Preston

The Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) hosted its annual Scholarship and Fundraising Gala was held at the historic Eldorado Ball Room in Third Ward. The evening turned out to be a “Who’s Who” event, mixing media pioneers, up-and-comers and college students all under one roof as they celebrated accomplishments, then danced the night away comfortably while wearing their “flyest kicks” for the themed “Sneaker Ball.” HEB was title sponsor of the event, providing 12 students from across the Houston area with scholarships to help fund their educational endeavors.

James Harris, HEB’s Director, Diversity & Inclusion and Supplier Diversity, and nearly 20 more representatives from the company were in attendance, witnessing the impact their sponsorship dollars have on the youth. HABJ wanted to cast the net wide, reaching out to colleges across the Houston area to bring more students, who may not have even known HABJ was an available resource for development and mentorship. Students were selected from Alvin Community College, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, Lamar University, North American University, Lee College and College of Biblical Studies. Commissioner Rodney Ellis and County Judge Lina Hidalgo on Tuesday, Dec. 5, will announce Commissioners Court will vote on a resolution to recognize the African American soldiers and apologize to their families for the miscarriage of justice during the 1917 Camp Logan Riots in Houston. “… On behalf of our region, Harris County Commissioners Court apologizes to the families of all the soldiers who were killed, beaten, harassed, unfairly convicted, and denied their rights to due process and equal protection under the law while serving our country in Harris County,” states the resolution, which Commissioner Ellis will present. “The Harris County Commissioners Court salutes the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment who served at Camp Logan and their courage in the face of extreme racism and injustice; commends the individuals who fought for their clemency,” it continues. The U.S. Army recently set aside the convictions of 110 Black soldiers who were convicted after the riots. Nineteen were hanged, and 63 received life sentences. “I am putting forward a resolution at Commissioners Court commending these families for their perseverance to shine a light on this injustice,” For more visit Commissioner Ellis said. aframnews.com

POLITICS WITHOUT HONOR Politics without honor is like celebrating Christmas without honoring Jesus Christ, because Christ is the reason for the season. Therefore, we must spiritually try to understand why there is so much ungodliness in politics. Apparently, it’s because families, churches, and schools are not effective in their respective ordained roles. Families are not teaching and exampling spiritual moral values but are embracing materialism as a way of life. Families are spiritual units, and the basis of every society. Families are not economic units, but families have economic functions: food, shelter, and clothing. Churches, especially Christian Right Evangelical pastors are not teaching sound spiritual doctrines. Christian churches, for the most part have become too Social Club oriented and are not spiritually Bible-based. Public schools have become like baby-sitting services. Basically, keeping children while parents work, and we cannot positively declare in safe environments, because of lack of love, intellectual integrity, social respect, self-discipline, and school violence. Individuals cannot teach or learn in undisciplined, non-integrityoriented environments. America, what we spiritually

invest in these three major social institutions is what we invariably spiritually invest in multi-cultural democracy, and it is without honor and justice. January 6th, 2021 is the perfect example of politics without honor, and democracy gone astray. To add insult to injury, House Speaker Johnson, claims to be a Godly man, but his actions are so ungodly and devilish that he says Lord, Lord and consults with the devil, and the high priest of the devil’s Imp. What a shame! With such an ungodly political leadership example, America cannot be righteously exalted, because sin is a reproach to Godfearing people. But know this God will overthrow the house of the wicked, and the tabernacle of the righteous shall be exalted. It is so spiritually difficult to get partisan political leaders on the same page, and going in the same direction, because: “The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.” (Proverbs 21:16). America, we simply have too many dead-men-walking GOP politicians who are members of the congregation of the dead, and who will not listen to sound spiritual understanding. Thus, the GOP simply has too many ungodly politicians with minimal spiritual understanding of the Preamble and the U. S. Constitution, because they desire to transform multi-cultural democracy into White Privilege Autocracy, Russian style.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Every senior at H.I.S.D.’s Carnegie Vanguard is admitted to college with 95% matriculating to four-year institutions. Every single senior. First generation college bound students from very low-income families. Students with less than exemplary grades. Even uncertain students who are not convinced of the value of higher education are expected to try, and each of them have been accepted at a college or university before they graduate. Some are awarded full scholarships to prestigious institutions; some accept work-study packages and borrow to cover their expenses locally. Their school counselors and interns faithfully channel these students through the process of determining their destiny. For schools without such devoted on-site advisors private college admissions consultants are happy to help. Count on spending between $850 - $10,000 with an average hourly rate of $200 for their advice which comes with no guarantee of admittance to your desired institution. For students inbetween these circumstances, free help (and sometimes funding) is available to direct your endeavor. Libraries are a good source of information. College admissions offices are full of helpful details. Teachers are often helpful. Dan Lee is an admissions consultant who believes that

some colleges covet firstgeneration college students (those from homes where neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree) so much that they are preferred over more highly prepared students. To demonstrate their preferences these schools, offer scholarships to some capable, less well-resourced students whose parents lack a bachelors degree,. He says colleges and universities realize that GPAs and standardized test scores are frequently the result of socioeconomic circumstances, so many institutions review low-income students’ performance through the lens of their individual high schools, not in comparison to the entire applicant pool. Mr. Lee co-founded the Solomon Admissions Consulting Group, and he understands how challenging it is for a student to make themselves outshine their peers in the effort to be chosen by the school of their choice. “Especially for kids who are applying to a lot of the top schools, it’s almost like a part-time job.” Certainly, many kids must feel like a part-time job is necessary just to participate in the college application process, even before paying for the tuition, fees, books, and board needed to continue their education. Registration to sit for the SAT costs $55 (but can be waived for eligible candidates). Application fees to individual colleges can run up to $100 but most Historically Black Colleges and Universities offer a Common Black College Application (CBCA), allowing students to apply for up to fifty HBCUs with just a single application and $35. GREATER HOUSTON EDITION Sneaker Night Cont. Then there were the honorees. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was given a standing ovation and a warm send-off from the journalists of color, thanking him for eight years of service to the community. In addition, National Association of Black Journalists President Ken Lemon flew down to Houston to participated, with Lemon being awarded for his leadership. Tributes were also paid to other media and business powerhouses and rising stars, including Gene Dias of the Houston Astros, Radio One’s “Uncle Funky” Larry Jones, Fox 26’s Nate Griffin, Karen Jackson of Sisters Network Inc. and rising star Nawara Blue, a reality show producer with dozens of hit shows under her belt. ABC 13 Chief

Meteorologist David Tillman was surrounded by his family as he was honored by the organization. Anchors Melanie Lawson, Gina Gaston, and Erica Simon were just a few of the colleagues who proudly stood by his side. “David Tillman is the epitome of professional. He knows science like the back of his hand and is always accurate, always delivers with the right tone, and works hard to keep Houstonians safe,” said Simon. “As a Black meteorologist, he represents us well, and has for decades — from Jackson, Mississippi to Memphis to H-Town. What a lot of people don’t know is that he loves to storm chase and is a big basketball fan. He’s a joy to work with and be around. No one is more deserving of his flowers than him.”

December 10, 2023 In addition, African American News & Issues’ Roy and Shirley Malonson were also honored for their fearless advocacy of truth and justice in the community. “I know and love the Malonsons,” HABJ President Nakia Cooper said. “I have worked for them, learned from them, and appreciate them for making me see the

world through a different lens. We all need a Mrs. and Mrs. Malonson in our life, and it was my honor and privilege to pour a little back of what they’ve always poured into me.” For more information, visit www.habj.net.

LOCAL BREAKFAST WITH SANTA By: Shelley McKinley

Everyone involved was all smiles and holiday cheer at the 54th Annual Breakfast With Santa held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Blue Triangle Community center. This was a joint effort between the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. of Houston and the Blue Triangle MultiCultural Association, Inc., led by Charlotte K. Bryant, Executive Director of the Blue Triangle Multi-Cultural Association (MCA) and Community Center. In addition to breakfast, each child left with a book, a bicycle, and a toy of their choosing. Members of the Divine Nine were on hand to help children and parents navigate the all the activities such as ticket drawings for prizes as well as their individual pictures with Santa. Young people from various organizations, including Miss Top Teen Humble, were there as Santa’s helpers. Mrs. Bryant shared the history of the breakfast. “Breakfast with Santa started with Lullelia Walker Harrison of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority 54 years ago. She introduced the idea to the Pan-Hellenic Council and started with breakfast and a book for every child. The Alpha Phi Alpha men began to provide toys, along with the Blue Triangle Garden

Club. Each year it has gotten bigger and better. This is the first time with bikes.” UPS provided 50 bicycles and a love package for each family. Toys were also donated by members of the Divine Nine. “This was the first year that we were unable to invite the usual nine elementary schools in HISD, so we relied on social media and had an excellent turn out,” explained Bryant. “The next event at the Blue Triangle Center will be Kwanza for Families on December 27, 2023, 9am – 12pm, and the public is invited.” The Blue Triangle Community Center, previously known as the Blue Triangle YWCA, has served as the foundation for African American politics and social life for decades. Toward the end of the 1940’s a group of (10) women in the community organized and purchased land at 3000 McGowen St. for $1000. After the purchase, the property was deeded to Houston YWCA. The City of Houston Community Chest gave permission to hold a Capital Funds drive in 1948, raising $350,000.00, with Ms. Sylvia Coleman, chair. Construction began summer of 1950 and was completed December 1951. Programs and activities for children

and adults, daycare, Bible Class, art, drama and dance classes continued many years. Leisure learning and social activities made Blue Triangle “the social spot” for Houston’s people of color. Breakfast With Santa, and Reunion Dinners were annual events. Life Memberships, Silver and Gold Members – many of whom were sponsored by organizations, churches, civic groups and fraternal organizations provided funding to benefit program and operations. The Houston Y lost United Way funding, prompting the sale of each of the branches. On July 28, 1998, Kathy Johnson, Chair of Committee on Administration for Blue Triangle Branch, presented to the Houston Metropolitan Board of Directors

a letter of agreement and recommendation to keep Blue Triangle open to the community. She further requested that Blue Triangle Branch YWCA Building be turned over to the newly organized Blue Triangle MultiCultural Association, Inc., at a cost of $1.00. The majority of this community group were Life Members of Houston YWCA, who wanted to preserve the history, tradition and programs in Third Ward community. Inclusive rites and ownership of the Art of Dr. John Biggers and real property located 2805 Berry St. would complete the request.
