African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
This year SEBO South Africa, the African distributor of German manufactured SEBO upright and canister vacuum cleaners celebrates its 30th anniversary. The company started operations in 1985 when Johan Humphries Snr realised the local potential for an upright vacuum featuring an integrated hose and initially focused his attentions on the consumer market. It was however not long before retailer Truworths approached SEBO SA, requiring a quality upright vacuum cleaner for their stores. This effectively started SEBO SA’s foray into the commercial and industrial floor care markets. African Cleaning Review spoke to SEBO SA Managing Director Johan Humphries Jnr regarding the company’s history and current activities.
What is the history behind the SEBO brand? Eighty years after the first vacuum cleaner patent, two young consulting engineers were confident they could invent a vacuum cleaner on a whole new level. With a lot of theoretical and practical experience they founded the company “Stein & Co.” in Velbert in the “Bergischem Land”, Germany, and developed the SEBO 350 in 1978. This innovative and well-designed model contained so many new patents reflecting advanced technical progress that cleaning staff in hotels, hospitals and offices quickly realised that this was the best vacuum ever made. Mainly due to the user-friendly design and superior reliability of these vacuums, they rapidly became the world’s best selling upright vacuum
cleaners. Many features, which are now common on vacuum cleaners, were first introduced by SEBO, for example the integrated hose on uprights and electrostatic micro filters. During 1991 SEBO introduced the SEBO Automatic X1 upright vacuum cleaner to the retail market that featured computer controlled brush height adjustment for optimum cleaning performance. This feature still remains unique to SEBO. With four million vacuum cleaners sold SEBO is regarded as the global leader in commercial uprights. SEBO was also the first company to initiate dry carpet cleaning in Europe, as well South Africa. Subsequently the company started manufacturing canister vacuums and developed polishers for marble and wooden floors.
interview
Johan Humphries
Elaborate on the dry carpet cleaning system DUO-P carpet cleaning powder consists of hundreds of microsponges that contain safe solvent for greasy soiling, a neutral shampoo for non-greasy soiling and an anti re-soilant to delay re-soiling. All you have to do is – apply it to the carpet and work it into the carpet piles in order for it to absorb the dirt. Once absorbed it can be vacuumed and the big advantage here is that you don’t have to use water; it leaves your carpets dry immediately and ready for use. DUO-P also features antibacterial properties and is proven to eradicate dust mites.
How would you describe a typical SEBO upright vacuum cleaner? The SEBO upright vacuum cleaner is completely focused on the essentials: providing the utmost in reliability and cleaning effectiveness on a daily basis! From the start, SEBO Stein & Co. established product durability, usability and ease of maintenance as its highest developmental priorities. As a result, the SEBO EVOLUTION sets new standards in the professional cleaning industry.
Describe the strengths of SEBO SA Our strength is definitely after-sales service. SEBO South Africa is after all a family business and we pride ourselves on being hands on, to be on site when a client calls and to attend to the matter immediately.
It is the personal interaction that makes the company unique. We have 40 agents all over South Africa, who were appointed on their individual strengths, market knowledge and potential to grow. We also have representation in other African countries like Botswana and Zambia.
Why use an upright vacuum compared to a canister type? If you want to maintain a good quality carpet properly then you will definitely need the active rotating brush action offered by upright vacuums. In order to reach the fine dust and imbedded dirt the carpet piles need to be agitated before removal and the rotating brushes perform this task best. In addition, the integrated accessories and vacuum pipe make the upright vacuum readily available for use on floors, curtains and upholstery. Another major advantage of SEBO vacuums is that the bag is fitted in front of the filter and motor, therefore the dirt is sucked into the bag as opposed to other vacuums where the dirt is blown into the air causing an inflated bag. All SEBO vacuums boast the British Allergy Foundation’s Seal of Approval, thereby making it ideal for use in hospitals, hotels and clean rooms.
What is your opinion on the market trend towards hard floors? There is most certainly a growing trend towards the installation of hard floors in many facilities. It
has its benefits: it last longer, is easier to clean and to maintain, but is not always practical within the hospitality sector. However we realised a new maintenance opportunity in real wood and marble flooring applications especially, and introduced the SEBO FELIX vacuum cleaner with the DISCO polisher attachment that offers brilliant performance on hard floors, using diamond encrusted pads and eliminating the use of chemicals. Its powerful suction removes fine dust particles leaving the floor dust free, whilst the highly efficient 2 000U/ min ultra high-speed floor polisher creates a brilliant gloss surface. We have already introduced it to a number of hotels and the prognosis is that these facilities are very happy with the end result. This is extremely encouraging considering the hospitality industry constitutes seventy percent of our business.
What does the future hold for Sebo SA? We definitely want to see additional growth in the rest of Africa; at the moment we are fielding a lot of queries from other countries on the continent and I am confident this is where new opportunities await us. SEBO South Africa also wants to entrench the brand within the contract cleaning sector as it is a growing market due to increased outsourcing of cleaning services. industry news KTH acquires 51 percent of Servest in major black empowerment deal
I
nvestment holding company, Kagiso Tiso Holdings (KTH) announced the successful acquisition of a 51 percent shareholding in the Servest Group (“Servest”) to form the largest, majority black-owned, multi-services company in Africa. In terms of the deal, Servest Group is valued at approximately R4.5 billion. The Servest investment offers a compelling proposition, consistent with KTH’s strategy, as the business has significant presence in South Africa, United Kingdom and the rest of Africa with multi-currency earnings. The purchase will give KTH exposure to 24 000 African and UK sites. Servest provides integrated facilities management solutions including inter alia cleaning, parking, catering, hygiene, office service and landscaping to prominent clients such as Transnet, Netcare Group, Anglo Platinum, Debswana, Sasol, Sainsbury’s, BBC and UK’s House of Parliament, among others. Commenting on the acquisition Vuyisa Nkonyeni, Chief Executive Officer of KTH, said: “This transaction demonstrates clear delivery against KTH’s strategy of acquiring meaningful or majority stakes in fast growing

companies, which are supported by strong management teams and have good exposure to African market opportunities.” “This deal means that Servest is now 51 percent black owned, but it represents so much more than just an empowerment transaction,” says Kevin Derrick, Chief Executive Officer of Servest. “This not only clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to transformation and long-term sustainability, but brings with it significant opportunities for future growth, expansion and job creation.” Servest co-founder and Group Chairman, Kenton Fine, said, “We are
delighted at the prospect of partnering with a professional organisation with the calibre of KTH. With similar values entrenched in both organisations, we look forward to embracing the additional experience and knowledge that KTH will bring, further underpinning our continued ambitious growth strategy into the future“. Beyond the commercial rationale, both parties see the transaction as an important step in driving further transformation at Servest. The KTHServest acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals including South African Competition Commission approval.
Cannon Hygiene takes gold in people management
C
annon Hygiene UK has cause for two celebrations this year – its 60th anniversary and very recently being awarded the gold standard by Investors in People (IIP).
6
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
The company has been successful in achieving this coveted standard, recognising best practice in people management. IIP is a standard used by thousands of organisations across the world, and the gold award is only given to those businesses that are able to meet an additional 126 requirements on top of the 39 core IIP objectives. Cannon Hygiene employees were interviewed by IIP across a number of service centres and its head office as part of a rigorous and objective process. Howard Sedgwick, MD of Cannon Hygiene UK said: “After initially being awarded the standard IIP accreditation in 2001, securing the gold award acknowledges our
commitment to continually invest in our people. This is definitely their achievement and they have been fundamental in developing a distinctive approach to working with our customers. This approach is liked by our customers and it makes Cannon Hygiene a great place for people to work.” Cannon Hygiene provides hygiene solutions to many household names and thousands of SMMEs across the length and breadth of the UK, as well as having an excellent reputation in the public sector. In its 60th year the company shows continued ambition and the achievement of the gold award reflects this.
industry news New feminine hygiene service from Initial
A
new feminine hygiene service called PLUS by Initial was recently launched by Initial – a division of Rentokil Initial. The PLUS by Initial service is a proactive and multi-layered approach to the management of sanitary waste in which multiple levels of protection are used to provide an unparalleled level of hygiene protection for both customers and employees alike. Initial ran a pilot project during 2014 to test the new procedure for the servicing of feminine hygiene units. The new process promised both an improvement in the actual hygiene levels of the sanitary bins and a reduction in the business’s impact on the environment. Prior to the pilot, Initial had already carried out preliminary hygiene tests in real-life situations, using an independent laboratory. The preliminary results showed that with fully-trained service colleagues carrying out the new procedure, bacterial levels could be consistently reduced – on average – by 92 percent!
Throughout the course of the pilot the preliminary hygiene findings were rigorously tested, and the process refined further. Over 4 000 swab tests – taken by an independent SANAS-accredited laboratory – from PLUS-serviced sanitary bins proved that the additional layers of protection afforded by Initial’s anti-bacterial liners, natural plant and mineral essential oil odour-neutralising granules and alcoholfree sanitising solution leave PLUSserviced feminine hygiene units more hygienic than the average kitchen counter. The PLUS service has also been endorsed by industry expert Dr Dave Baldwin of EmChem Consulting “as providing a higher level of protection than would be afforded by a service offering only a single barrier of protection”. In addition to the hygiene assessments, Initial also commissioned an independent environmental assessment (conducted by the Carbon Trust), which examined the impact the new service procedure would have on the carbon footprint of
the business. The results were extremely positive, with a reduction of up to 24 percent possible with the rollout of PLUS to all customers. Based on these extremely encouraging results, Initial has started a country-wide migration all its current Feminine Hygiene Service customers over to the PLUS by Initial service. “We are extremely proud of our PLUS service. Not only does it offer superb hygiene benefits for our customers, but it also supports a healthier working environment for our technicians and reduces our impact on the environment,” said David Lewis, MD Rentokil Initial. industry news Matco acquired by COBA International
C
OBA International recently announced that it has acquired Matco, an established matting and flooring business based in Johannesburg. The move is said to bolster COBA Plastics’ business in Cape Town, as it will provide new potential for both companies. Matco was owned for nearly forty years by two generations of the Bertz family. The company is a leading manufacturer and supplier of entrance matting, workplace safety matting and other commercial flooring and floor safety products. The Matco range has a comprehensive offering that bears a great similarity to COBA’s matting range, as well as expertise in the customised logo matting market. As such, there is an ideal synergy
between COBA Plastics (Pty) Ltd and Matco. The two businesses will operate alongside one another, but trade independently from their respective locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Strategically, this acquisition enables COBA to extend its geographic reach, as well as enhance the company’s product offering to matting and flooring customers throughout South Africa. Matco will continue to trade under its current name as part of the COBA International group, without any changes to its management and staff, with a “business as usual” approach. Nicole Herron, daughter of the company founder, Hans Joachim Bertz, retains her position as MD of Matco. Mark Cooke, CEO of COBA International
said, “We are delighted to welcome Matco to the COBA International group. We have been impressed by the company, its people, and its products. This is yet another significant strategic acquisition for COBA International, which maps out an exciting new phase for our matting business in South Africa, and the COBA group as a whole.” COBA International, with its head office based in the UK, is a global group of manufacturing and distribution businesses servicing the needs of customers worldwide. The long-established Group includes specialist design, development and manufacturing companies producing high quality thermoplastic extrusions, plastic tubing and hosing, as well as market-leading floor matting and safety knife products.

on their waste and recycling activities, and are compelled to keep all records of submitted waste management information for a period of at least five years. To ensure compliance, commercial and industrial solutions specialist Pandae proposes its innovative new GreenSolution offering. Pandae CEO Ryk Coetzee notes that GreenSolution is a complete onsite waste management programme that assists companies in complying
with new waste disposal laws and government regulations. “As part of the offering, GreenSolution experts assess a company’s waste stream and develop an appropriate, customised waste diversion programme,” he explains. An optimal waste collection station is designed and on-site waste management equipment – such as waste stands, mini steel skips, sorting tables, coloured wheelie bins and waste sheds – is supplied on a rental basis. Pandae personnel are stationed on site to collect and sort all waste into various categories, ready to be collected and disposed of by approved recycling and waste removal companies. Pandae ensures best pricing for all its clients’ recycled waste and, according to Coetzee, the resultant income generated often pays for the facility. “While positively assisting businesses and ensuring peace of mind, the company is also able to provide a substantial number of muchneeded jobs for general workers and supervisors in South Africa through the GreenSolution offering.” Continues on next page >>

Kärcher sweeper declared Pulire Innovation Award winner
A
combination of user friendliness and efficient operation won Kärcher’s new KM 125/130 R mechanical sweeper the Innovation Award at Pulire 2015, a leading event in Europe for the professional cleaning industry. The show, held every second year in Verona in Italy, hosted 271 exhibitors from 16 countries that presented the latest products, machines, tools and solutions for professional cleaning. Compared with its predecessor, the sweeper unites a number of features that have already been successfully employed in smaller machines. This includes the rotating brush, which makes cleaning corners effortless; extraordinary manoeuvrability; positioning of the main sweeper roller on the rear axis for easy maintenance; safe crossing of floor bumps and ramps, as well as fully automated, continuous filter cleaning by means of compressed air.
For cleaning difficult corners, Kärcher has developed what is known as a rotating brush. This is mounted between the main roller brush and the side brush and is an optional extra. This, combined with the machine’s high manoeuvrability, enables dirt to be effectively picked up from corners with a single action. Kärcher Fleet, the fleet management system, is also available as an optional extra. This allows for incorporation into a larger fleet of cleaning machines and access to the machine’s data for optimised use and maintenance.

F
ollowing prolonged exposure to regular lightning strikes that caused structural damage to the tip of a 106 m-high smoke stack at a copper mine in Phalaborwa, leading rope access specialist Skyriders was contracted to complete the repair work. Skyriders’ Mike Zinn explained that a team of five rope access specialists
10
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
successfully repaired the steel lightning protection capping on the top of the structure, which protects the top of the smoke stack, within eight days during May this year. “With issues like lightning strikes, high winds, thermal variations and the velocity of the exhaust gases from the stack, the capping can become misaligned. Our task was to realign
the various stainless steel components before welding it to a belt to secure it safely. The biggest challenge was accurately welding the steel at such height. However, this obstacle was easily overcome as the Skyriders team boasts in-depth skills and experience in this regard,” commented Zinn. Given the ongoing success at this project, and many similar ones located across Africa, Zinn is optimistic of the future outlook for Skyriders. “Rope access is a safer and more cost-effective alternative to the more traditional means of access on tall structures, as it applies practical rope work to enable workers to access difficult-to-reach locations with greater ease. This has made rope access increasingly popular in numerous industries, including mining,” he concluded.

Working together to stop the spread of disease By Robert Kravitz
A major professional cleaning-related organisation conducted a study looking into the types of comments people leave on social media sites concerning the appearance of washrooms in facilities such as restaurants, retail stores and public facilities. The study revealed that building users pay surprisingly close attention to how well maintained washrooms are and, in at least one case, the manner in which they are cleaned.
S
ome of the comments made were complaints such as one that mentioned cleaning workers using the same mops and cleaning cloths to clean a variety of surfaces, whether it was a toilet, faucet handle or countertop. It is unfortunate to see that incorrect cleaning procedures still occur, because there is a considerable body of evidence indicating that using the same soiled cleaning tools, such as mops or “rags,” can spread contaminants from one surface to another. But in fact it is still happening – and frequently, as noted in other posts. The person who must lead the way in correcting this, and in promoting proper hygienic cleaning, is the person most facility managers turn to when it comes to cleaning: their cleaning equipment and product distributor.
Getting knowledge under your belt Before providing any instruction, distributors and managers should become aware of some of the studies available, published by some of the most credible organisations, on how the tools we use to clean surfaces – specifically, cleaning cloths and mops – can sometimes spread disease and cause cross-contamination. For instance, a study published in 2004, “Household Cleaning and Surface Disinfection: New Insights and Strategies” in the Journal of Hospital Infection, found that in situations
12
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
where the cleaning procedure fails to thoroughly eliminate contamination from one surface, when that same cloth is used to wipe another surface, “the contamination is transferred to that [new] surface.”1 And just to prove this is certainly not “new material,” one of the first studies on how cleaning tools can spread contaminants from one surface to another dates back to 1971.2 This study investigated microbial contamination of cleaning cloths and their potential to spread contamination. Once again, the researchers reported that wiping surfaces with contaminated cloths can contaminate hands, equipment, and other surfaces. As to the spread of contaminants using mops specifically, part of this 1971 study reads as follows: Following the demonstration of [the] massive spread of bacterial contamination throughout the hospital by the wet-mopping techniques in use, quantitative studies were undertaken to determine the source of contamination and to institute measures of control. It was found that mops, stored wet, supported bacterial growth to very high levels and could not be adequately decontaminated by chemical disinfection. Laundering and adequate drying provided effective decontamination, but build up of bacterial counts occurred if mops were not changed daily or if disinfectant was omitted from the wash water.
Steps to take These studies and numerous others are significant because they have been published and reported in prominent medical- and health-related journals in Canada, the United States, and around the globe. It is clear that a problem does exist when cleaning cloths and mops are used and then reused. Convincing your customers of this problem is the easy part. The studies speak for themselves, and most cleaning professionals realise their primary job is to clean for the health of building users. However, the harder part is offering alternatives. One alternative is provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)3,which suggests contaminated, reusable cleaning cloths (and it is assumed mops) can often be effectively cleaned by washing with detergents in hot water and drying for two hours at 80 degrees (C). This is about four degrees hotter than the drying temperature of most commercial and residential dryers. The CDC also mentions that some cleaning cloths may not hold up under this high-heat setting. Another option the CDC offers is to decontaminate cloths and mops during cleaning. Facility managers know that cleaning professionals are unlikely to decontaminate cleaning cloths and mops while cleaning. They are obliged to clean a given square metre per hour, which essentially eliminates extra time
feature contract cleaning Facility managers know that cleaning professionals are unlikely to decontaminate cleaning cloths and mops while cleaning. They are obliged to clean a given square metre per hour, which essentially eliminates extra time for decontaminating during cleaning. for decontaminating during cleaning. Further, in many cases, an industrialtype dryer would be necessary to dry these cleaning tools at a sufficiently high temperature, making both of these recommendations impractical. Distributors and cleaning professionals may consider additional systems and equipment to limit the spread of contaminants from one surface to another. Solutions such as spray-and-vac systems, trolley buckets that dispense cleaning solution directly to the floor without a mop, flat-surface cleaning systems, and
even cleaning cloths that can be folded into quadrants can help to eliminate this problem altogether, or reduce it significantly. At the end of the day, distributors and cleaning professionals must work together to stay on top of the latest trends and methods. This will help to ensure cleaning tasks are carried out correctly, all in an effort to protect human health.

Backpack vacuums – The basics The professional cleaning industry is now witnessing the beginnings of an entirely new generation of backpack vacuum cleaners, according to Doug Berjer, product manager for CFR Corp., a manufacturer of recycling carpet extractors. The significant amount of time, effort and resources put into manufacturing and machines is a solid indication that manufacturers expect the selection of backpack vacuum cleaners to increase in the years to come.
B
ackpacks have several benefits, and at the top of the list is improved worker productivity. Some machines are capable of cleaning as much as 650 square metres per hour. Depending on the size of the machines used, that is 86 plus square metres – more per hour than when using an upright vacuum. Other benefits include the ability to clean both hard and soft surfaces with the same machine, to reach high and low surfaces easily, to get to hard-to-reach areas and more. To realise these benefits, cleaning professionals need to know how to use a backpack vacuum cleaner, and that is where distributors marketing these machines come in. Because backpacks have been around for nearly 20 years, many distributors may assume that, at this point, most workers are well versed in the use of these machines. These assumptions can be mistakes and will lead to lost sales.
Wearing a backpack vacuum While injuries are rare when using a backpack machine, if they do occur, it is often when the user is either putting on or taking off the backpack. There is a safe and ergonomic way to put on a backpack vacuum cleaner. First, the operator should begin by making sure the wand is attached to the machine and all the necessary tools are in the waist belt holder (if the belt provides this convenience). Next, the worker should put the machine on in an open area. Be sure the space is clear of obstructions; I hate to count the number of times a new user has knocked something over on a desk or ledge behind them while putting on the machine. Other instructions for wearing a backpack vacuum cleaner include: • Loosen the harness and, if you are right-handed, grab the harness of the machine with your right hand and pull it over your right shoulder.
In order to educate both cleaning equipment distributors and their customers, here are some basics about wearing and operating a backpack vacuum cleaner. In order to educate both cleaning equipment distributors and their customers, here are some basics about wearing and operating a backpack vacuum cleaner. While the machines vary, with some more comfortable to use and wear than others, what we will cover here applies to the more advanced professional backpacks and offers some food for thought.

African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
(If you are left-handed, grab the harness with your left hand and pull it over your left shoulder.) • If you are right-handed, put your free arm through the left shoulder strap. (Again, if left-handed, put your free arm through the left shoulder strap.) • Fasten and tighten the waist belt. The belt should be snug but not tight.
• A djust the shoulder straps so that the machine fits comfortably; the weight of the machine should rest on the base of your spine, just above the hips and not on your shoulders. • Fasten and secure the sternum strap. • To ensure a comfortable fit, some machines will have a space between the shoulder strap and the shoulders. • Pull one end of the power cord under your waist belt and then plug it into the machine. This will help indicate when the cord is running out without disconnecting the machine. • Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. This procedure will work with most backpacks. To ensure comfort, some harnesses offer a variety of ways to adjust the machine to the torso, including using a stabiliser strap. These adjustments may be necessary because one size will not fit all. Some harnesses now have an air mesh lining that rests against the user’s back. This allows airflow between the machine and the worker’s back, which helps minimise heat issues that can negatively affect operations.
Using the machine Once the machine is comfortably placed on the back the cleaning professional is ready to vacuum. What invariably happens is the operator starts pushing and pulling the wand as if it were an upright vacuum cleaner. This is not the appropriate way to use a backpack, and if one of the goals is to enhance worker productivity, it will not be accomplished by using the wand in this manner.
feature contract cleaning As an alternative, the user should place one hand where the hose connects to the wand and the other beyond the bend of the wand, which is found on most systems. Keeping the back straight, twist at the waist, not the shoulders or upper body, using a sideto-side motion. Twisting at the waist is much easier on the body and will result in faster cleaning. When using a floor tool for vacuuming hard-surface floors, it is best to keep the tool at a slight angle to allow airflow, which makes the wand easier to use. Some backpacks now come with virtually all the tools that a cleaning professional needs to perform the job. With the tools needed placed on the waist belt, it is easy to access the right tool for the necessary application. Having the correct tools readily available also helps improve worker productivity. In most cases, first-time backpack users are able to comfortably use the machine for all their vacuuming needs from the start. However, sometimes the machine can take some getting
used to; after all, the operator is wearing a vacuum cleaner on their back. In this case, try transferring the worker to backpack use in increasing increments of time, wearing the machine an hour or so the first and second times, two hours the next, and
so on. Usually within a few days the user will adjust and start wearing and using the backpack comfortably and confidently. For more information about CFR Corp visit: www.cfrcorp.com

New guidelines will help sports venues implement greener cleaning programmes To assist sports facilities in creating healthier, safer environments for their fans, athletes and staff, the Green Sports Alliance has released its “Greener Cleaning” Playbook. The Playbook provides cost-effective strategies for creating a successful greener cleaning programme, and offers comprehensive guidance on how to select cleaning products and services that are environmentally safe.
Stephen Ashkin
Our goal is to improve the health and environmental sustainability of the places where we play sports.
E
ach year, the US commercial and institutional cleaning industry uses more than 2.7 million tonnes of chemicals, more than 1.8 million tonnes of sanitary paper products, and more than 453 thousand tonnes of plastic liners for waste receptacles. Greener cleaning initiatives can improve sports facilities’ operational efficiency and savings by assisting them to use resources more effectively and safely. These strategies include using cleaning processes that reduce energy and water use, decreasing
26
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
the number of cleaning products and switching to high-efficiency cleaning equipment, and ecologically preferable sanitary paper products. “Our goal is to improve the health and environmental sustainability of the places where we play sports,” said Stephen Ashkin, Playbook author, executive director of the Green Cleaning Network and member of the Green Sports Alliance Board of Directors. “We heard from our members that they want to pursue greener cleaning but found the process daunting because of the variety of products, equipment and processes that are used. This Playbook provides a one-stop resource that helps venues easily plan and implement a greener cleaning programme.” The Playbook identifies best practices that sports facilities have leveraged to implement stronger programmes, including staff training. Staff training includes educating facility staff on the effectiveness of greener products, which in many cases can clean better than traditional, more toxic products. Other better practices include using greener cleaning as a cost reduction strategy, as many greener products are less expensive than their traditional counterparts, and exploring new technologies that can reduce the need for cleaning chemicals altogether. “A core focus in creating meaningful change across the global sports industry is through the supply chain,” said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, cofounder and president of the Green
Sports Alliance. “By better enabling sports venues to implement greener cleaning, we’re helping to educate our members and the marketplace about environmentally preferable products that can reduce impacts on the planet.”
A core focus in creating meaningful change across the global sports industry is through the supply chain. Sports facilities are already benefiting from their greener cleaning initiatives. The Playbook highlights the operational efficiency and cost-saving results at five leading professional and collegiate venues: • Xcel Energy Center (Home of the Minnesota Wild): Thanks to its switch to greener cleaning products, 90 percent of cleaning product purchases meet green standards and several toxic items have been eliminated entirely, including bleach, floor strippers and harsh seat-cleaning chemicals. • CenturyLink Field and Events Center (Home of the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders): Reduced the amount of chemicals needed to clean the stadium by more than 231 000 litres and reduced battery waste by 590 kilograms per year with more efficient hand towel dispensers.
educational • D odgers Stadium (Home of the LA Dodgers): Converted from plastic can liners (made from virgin plastic resin) to liners made from 100 percent postconsumer recycled resin. Coupled with using liners sized to fit their respective containers, the stadium has removed roughly 27 tonnes of plastic from its waste stream annually. • Lincoln Financial Field (Home of the Philadelphia Eagles): Replaced most of its traditional
cleaning chemicals with devices that electrically convert tap water into an effective and environmentally responsible cleaning solution, reducing the ecological impacts associated with packaging and transporting traditional cleaning chemicals. The Green Sports Alliance leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play. The nonprofit organisation does so by inspiring
sports leagues, teams, venues, their partners, and millions of fans, to embrace renewable energy, healthy food, recycling, water efficiency, species preservation, safer chemicals and other environmentally preferable practices. Alliance members represent nearly 300 sports teams and venues from 20 different sports leagues and 14 countries. For more information visit: www.greensportsalliance.org.
Considering purchasing a floor scrubbing machine? Over the past number of years, manufacturers have introduced entirely new types of floor cleaning and scrubbing systems. This means cleaning contractors have many more options and types of machines from which to choose.
A
quick search on Google Shopping for automatic scrubbers indicates that the average price for these machines ranges from about R49 000, with smaller traditional machines costing about R14 700 and more complex and larger auto scrubbers approaching R98 000 in price. This makes selecting a floor cleaning and scrubbing system potentially one of the most costly expenditures as a cleaning contractor. Because of this Kaivac, Inc., developer of the OmniFlex™ AutoVac system, offers cleaning contractors 10 issues to keep in mind before purchasing a floor-cleaning machine: 1. The lifetime cost of ownership of the machine, which includes the initial purchase price, ongoing maintenance, and operator training 2. The machine’s effectiveness in cleaning
3. Ease of operation 4. Ease of maintenance 5. Speed of repair – to avoid costly extended downtime 6. Productivity rates 7. Multi-purpose efficiency – the ability to handle a variety of flooring needs 8. Mobility – how easy it is to move the machine from one site to another 9. Customisation – the ability to be altered to accommodate a facility’s specific needs 10. New floor care systems and technology The last item requires some clarification. According to Matt Morrison, Communications Manager for Kaivac, Inc., the past few years have shown manufacturers introducing entirely new types of floor cleaning and scrubbing systems. “This means cleaning contractors have many more options and types of
machines to choose from, therefore they should investigate their options.” Morrison adds that of the 10 things to consider, probably the most important and most often overlooked is the total cost of ownership of the machine. “No contractor wants to be in a situation where they have purchased a costly floor machine but can’t keep up with the repair bills. Be sure and look into total cost of ownership issues prior to making an auto floor scrubber selection.” Kaivac, Inc. delivers complete science-based cleaning systems designed to produce healthy results and outcomes while raising the value of cleaning operations and the professionalism of the worker. Kaivac, Inc. offers an integrated portfolio of environmentally friendly cleaning products designed to remove the maximum amount of soil and potentially harmful bio pollutants in the most cost-effective manner possible.

Five evolving trends in building operations “It is important that cleaning industry professionals be aware of these trends so they can better address the changing needs of their clients. The concerns of large facilities are always evolving,” says Ron Segura, president of San Francisco-based Segura Associates.
H
is company assists organisations, such as Stanford University, Adobe Systems, Stryker Medical and others, to operate their facilities in a healthier, more sustainable and efficient manner. “Sometimes their focus is on cost reduction,” Segura says. “This was very true during the recession but now these larger organisations are more focused on other issues.” Segura says it is important that cleaning industry professionals are aware of this so they can better address the changing needs of their clients. Invariably, the concerns at a major university, for instance, will in time filter down to smaller colleges and educational facilities, he adds. So, midway through the year, what mega trends does he see evolving in 2015? Among them are the following: • Water. There is a much greater emphasis on water conservation and efficiency. “Facilities throughout the country are now looking for ways to reduce water consumption on a long-term basis and not just during a drought.” • Beyond green cleaning. More organisations are looking into green cleaning strategies that go
beyond traditional green cleaning programmes. Cleaning with engineered or chemical-free water, for example, is attracting greater interest. • Worker morale. At one time, cleaning workers were rarely thought of when it came to building cleaning operations. Today, not only are they respected for the contribution they make in keeping a facility healthy, “major organisations want them to know they are a part of the [organisation’s] family. Improving morale has been tied to enhanced building performance and reducing staff turnover.” • Streamlining purchasing. This is becoming a crucial issue. Large organisations purchase millions of dollars in cleaning products every year. However, referring to one organisation he worked with, Segura says, “They had more inventory than many supply houses, purchased from several distributors and manufacturers.” Streamlining purchasing assists clients to keep improving the tracking of their purchases, cut costs and, in this case, reduce
supplies from 24 different chemicals to just four.” • New RFPs. Many large building owners/managers are finding that the entire request for proposal (RFP) process needs revising so that it is more specific to the needs of the facility. “The RFP models used for decades just don’t work anymore.” The RFP presents preliminary requirements for the commodity or service, and may dictate to varying degrees the exact structure and format of the supplier’s response. Effective RFPs typically reflect the strategy and short/long-term business objectives, providing detailed insight upon which suppliers will be able to offer a matching perspective. Segura & Associates was founded by Ron Segura, who now serves as president of the company. Ron has over 45 years of experience in all segments of the professional cleaning and building operation. Segura & Associates works with clients, helping them operate their facilities in a healthier, more sustainable and efficient manner. For more information visit: www.seguraassociates.com

New fire extinguisher rental service With fire damage costing the South African economy R3.1 billion annually, leading hygiene and related services firm Bidvest Steiner has launched a maintenance and compliance service aimed at hand-held fire equipment.
M
onthly inspections, coupled with annual servicing, will enable organisations to be rest assured that all legislative and insurance requirements are complied with. Government has put extensive legislation in place to help mitigate the risks posed by fire. Few business leaders realise that all buildings are required to have fire extinguishers, in addition to any automatic sprinklers or other fixed equipment that may also exist. Applicable legislation includes the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the National Building Act.
Specifications are laid down by the SABS, and enforced by the South African Qualifications and Standards Committee. “Fire extinguishers are easy to forget, but when you need them, they have to work – that’s why the legal requirements are so stringent,” says Morne Lourens from Bidvest Steiner. “Our new service leverages the fact that we already have teams on site servicing hygiene equipment all over the country every month, [so this is] a great opportunity to add value to our clients by helping them to comply with the law, as well as prevent unnecessary loss of life or property in the event of a fire.”
Bidvest Steiner will supply new equipment free of charge, as well as appropriate signage, and assist with the evacuation plan. If clients already have equipment, Bidvest Steiner will assess its state and, if appropriate, buy it from the client. Faulty equipment is replaced at no additional cost and the necessary compliance documentation is supplied and updated regularly for the duration of the contract. “A further innovation is our ability to give risk managers access to an online portal to personally manage and check the company’s fire-equipment compliance,” concludes Lourens.

laundry review
Optimal infection prevention strategies when laundering health care textiles Proper laundering and handling are important in achieving and maintaining the hygienically-clean quality of health care fabrics and textiles delivered to the point of care, according to a new review that highlights evidence-based strategies to inhibit potentially serious contamination.
T
he review, based on findings and recommendations from peer-reviewed studies, as well as current standards and guidelines, is published online in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology. “We asked whether current industrial laundry processes are sufficient to interrupt patient-to-patient transmission via clean health care textiles (HCT). The evidence we examined suggests this is indeed the case; we found no evidence of microbial carry over from one patient to the next for patient-care textiles when proper textile management and laundering specifications were used ” says Lynne Sehulster, PhD, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and lead author. Outbreaks of infectious disease associated with laundered HCT are rare: only 12 such outbreaks have been reported worldwide in the past four decades. Analyses have identified inadvertent exposure of clean HCTs to environmental contamination, including exposure to dust in storage areas, or a process failure during laundering. “Current infection prevention strategies for laundering and handling HCT appear to be adequate in preventing health care-associated infections, provided that every step is taken to maintain the hygienic quality of HCTs prior to use,” says Sehulster. “However, if an outbreak occurs linked
30
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
to HCT, it is not enough to conduct microbial sampling of laundered textiles and declare the laundry process to be the source of the problem. Each of the distinct operations of the laundryhandling process needs to be evaluated in order to pinpoint the root of the problem. Our review was limited to clean HCT from laundries. We did not address contamination that occurs while the HCT are in use. That’s a topic for future study.” Recommendations on optimal infection-prevention strategies used during the laundering process of HCT include: • Adherence to standard precautions (gown and gloves) and minimal textile agitation when handling contaminated laundry in isolation rooms are considered sufficient to prevent the dispersal of potentially infectious aerosols. • Offsite laundries should carefully package or cover clean textile bundles prior to transport to prevent inadvertent contamination from dust and dirt during loading and unloading. • Laundered HCT must be stored in a manner to keep it dry and free from soil contamination. • If alterations occur in water temperature, agitation, chemical type and concentration, and duration of laundering cycle, the addition of a disinfecting laundry chemical can
compensate for the anticipated loss of antimicrobial effectiveness of the overall process. • Laundry additives, such as hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and acetic acid, can provide extra disinfection options for short wash cycles of HCT or for those laundry situations in which chlorine bleach is not indicated. • Industrial laundering offers more control of the process and can be tailored to adequately disinfect HCT with more choices of detergent and laundry additives compared to home laundering. • The importance of temperature, relative humidity, and moisture control in storage areas is central to preventing microbial proliferation in and on materials that have some organic components. As new technology and treatments (such as antimicrobial treatments of healthcare textiles) emerge, Sehulster recommends further research on the development of laundry processing in addition to current operations. “Studies are needed to demonstrate an impact on health care-associated infection incidence and increased patient safety in a costeffective manner,” Sehulster says. Advanced monitoring system dramatically improves hand washing in healthcare sector Hand hygiene is the simplest, most effective measure for preventing nosocomial (hospital-associated) infections. Yet on average, compliance by health care workers with recommended hand hygiene procedures is usually estimated at less than 50 percent.*
N
ew data from Hill-Rom, a leading global medical technology company shows its hand-hygiene compliance system dramatically increases hand washing among hospital staff using the system. Analysis of more than 20 million instances of hand washing shows institutions using Hill-Rom’s Hand
The Hill-Rom Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution uses badgebased locating technology to provide automatic, continuous monitoring and recording of every time a staff member uses a hand-hygiene station. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a serious threat. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately one in every 15 hospital patients has acquired at least one health care-acquired infection. In the United States alone, the cost of HAIs is estimated between $25 and $45 billion, and each year 75 000 people will die due to HAI. Experts in nearly every major public health organisation agree that ineffective “hand hygiene” (hand washing or using disinfecting sprays, wipes or gels) is one of the most significant contributors to the problem, yet compliance rates among caregivers are difficult to track and are regularly found to be less than half of what is recommended.
The Hill-Rom Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution uses badgebased locating technology to provide automatic, continuous monitoring and recording of every time a staff member uses a hand-hygiene station. Hygiene Compliance Solution achieved an average 226 percent improvement in compliance, with some institutions showing compliance by caregivers nearly tripled.

African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
The most effective strategy to improve hand-hygiene compliance includes monitoring hand-hygiene behaviour and implementing performance-based interventions.
“It’s all about forming a habit. Once caregivers get used to the system, they’re eager and excited to see their results posted at the end of each week. We showcase our highest individual compliance performer on a monthly basis,” says Dr Javier Reyes Mar, Head of Epidemiologic Surveillance at Medica Sur Hospital based in Mexico City, Mexico, a site included in the analysis. “Our caregivers strive to continuously improve and do better. They’re pleased with the ease of use of the system and it is encouraging to them that they are positively impacting the lives of the patients through this solution.” The Hill-Rom Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution is in use at innovative academic medical centre and community hospitals in the United States and Latin America.
feature hand hygiene “Hand washing is simple, but also simple to forget in a busy health care environment,” says Alton Shader, Senior Vice President and President, North America, at HillRom. “This new data shows that our system is extremely effective at helping hospital teams move the needle on compliance – the first step toward decreasing hospital-acquired infections.” The Hill-Rom Hand Hygiene Solution was designed to establish a 24/7 tracking and reminder system that fits seamlessly into clinical workflow.
The system helps hospital teams change hand washing behaviour without changing workflow via a proven change management process that works in concert with handson clinical support and best-in-class technology. The solution enables realtime feedback and is helping clinicians to achieve dramatic improvements in hand washing compliance. Additionally, the real-time locating technology used for hand-hygiene monitoring can be leveraged for other cases as well, including: nurse call, smart bed connectivity, staff locating,
asset tracking and environmental monitoring.

SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands WHO’s global annual call to action for health care workers Embedding hand hygiene promotional activities as a national priority is key for sustainability. Efforts have therefore been made to support countries or areas with large-scale activities to promote hand hygiene in health care facilities. World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety supports an informal network of co-ordinators/leaders of such activities with the aim of sharing experiences and learning from each other. At the moment there are 48 participants in the network, with co-ordinated activities to promote hand hygiene in health care either as specific activities or as part of infection prevention and control activities, or patient safety initiatives. After 10 years of the WHO Clean is Safer Care programme, here are 10 reasons why you should be part of it: • Hand hygiene at the right times saves lives. • Hand hygiene in health care has saved millions of lives. • Hand hygiene is a quality indicator of safe health care systems. • Health care problems, such as HAIs, which are often invisible but nevertheless still occur, are political and social challenges that we must address now. new products Clean and maintain high-traffic floors A new Blue HTC Twister diamond-media maintenance pad for retail applications that offers the dual benefits of cleaning and maintaining high-traffic floor areas is being exclusively launched in South Africa. Warehousing, supermarket and logistics applications are high-traffic areas that require regular cleaning and maintenance to retain their “as new” appearance and to prevent any longterm degradation or damage. The latest Blue Twister pad meets these diverse requirements in a single diamond-media maintenance pad. The Twister cleaning system consists of floor pads containing billions of microscopic diamonds that clean and polish the floor mechanically. The system does not make use of any harmful chemicals. It uses water as its primary cleaning agent, which poses a major environmental benefit, as well as
34
African Cleaning Review July/August 2015
reducing overall costs for end users. It is ideal for most common floor surfaces such as terrazzo, ceramic tiles, linoleum, vinyl/plastic, natural stone and concrete. When used in high-traffic areas such as in retail applications, or even metro stations, such floor surfaces have to be cleaned and maintained regularly. The Blue Twister pads have been developed specifically for uncoated, hard resilient floors. A single pad has a lifespan sufficient to cover up to 45 000 m2. The traditional method of flooring maintenance has always been to add a polish layer on top to give it a shiny appearance. Cleaning on a regular basis, however, does not prevent the ultimate deterioration of this layer. Hence the floor quickly loses its shiny appearance and becomes more susceptible to both scuff marks and more permanent damage in the long term.
“The answer to this perennial problem has simply been to reapply the surface polish layer. What this means is that such floors require regular periodic maintenance. By upgrading the floor itself, the Twister cleaning system drastically reduces this need for periodic maintenance. Epoxy-coated floors are common in warehouse and logistics applications and many manufacturers recommend using diamond-media maintenance pads for such surfaces.” says PMSA’s Quintin Booysen.
