STIAS SERIES Persistence of Race Editor: Nina G. Jablonski

This is the third and final group of essays emerging from the discussions of the Effects of Race (EoR) Project at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) that occurred in 2016 and 2017. The authors consider the biological and social understandings of race, and how new information from both the biological and social sciences is changing our perspective on the nature of the human condition, including the association of biological and social phenomena with “race”. They also look at global events or movements which influence these processes in South Africa and the costs of a racialised world order to humans and humanity. Phenomena are examined through the lenses of many disciplines: sociology, history, geography, anthropology and writing. ISBN 978-1-928480-44-0 print ISBN 978-1-928480-45-7 e-book

Race in Education Editor: Gerhard Maré

There is global evidence that “ghosts” of notions of essentialist differences between human “groups” continue to haunt in various forms. People draw upon ideas of religion, race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and nation to draw distinctions. Racism, xenophobia, sexism, and right-wing populism are ongoing and increasing phenomena. In addition, genetic science has introduced new forms of “proof”, which lends itself to misuse, to confirm “common sense perceptions”. The valuable contributions of the authors in this publication not only warn against such notions, but offer ways of exploring, exposing and challenging the ghosts and the fears engendered through their contemporary forms. The Effects of Race

Editors: Nina G. Jablonski & Gerhard Maré The STIAS research theme on Being Human Today explores the interrelated questions: What does it mean to be human? And, what is the nature of the world in which we aspire to be human? In the context of post-apartheid South Africa race and racism remain key references in both these questions. Why is this so, considering that the biological basis of race thinking has been refuted? Templates of race and racialism remain at the core of state policy in South Africa, periodic gross incidents of racism surface in public, and notions of the existence of races remain central to everyday thinking and discourse. This book is the result of the work of a group of leading thinkers and their in-depth conversations at STIAS during the winter of 2015 on the effects of race. STIAS SERIES Transformational Infrastructure for Development of a Wellbeing Economy in Africa Editors: Desta Mebratu & Mark Swilling

African countries face unprecedented challenges of defining a future development pathway in a resource- and carbon-constrained world. This book addresses this challenge, with special reference to the set of infrastructure that most African countries require to meet the sustainable development goals and fulfil the aspirations of Agenda 2063. Infrastructure is a key factor that determines how resource and energy flow and transform through socio-economic systems. Decisions made today by African countries on their infrastructural configuration will determine the inclusivity, resource intensity and climate resilience of their development pathways for decades to come. This book is a product of a two‑year research conducted by a group of African scholars who have an extensive academic and practical experience on the development of key infrastructure sectors in Africa. Changing our Worlds Art as Transformative Practice

Editors: Michelle LeBaron & Janis Sarra Changing Our Worlds draws on the wisdom of African artists, theorists, educators and leaders. It profiles an array of transformative arts projects that, among other things, changed attitudes and behaviours toward HIV testing and prevention, helped rural citizens to design and build a new community centre and supported those with HIV/AIDS to strengthen their resilience. As a group of scholar practitioners, collaborating on the book reinforced our confidence in the potency of arts practices to unsettle unjust orders, inspire new visions and embrace the human dignity that comes from acknowledging the interdependent world in which we live. Subjects of Modernity

Time-space, disciplines, margins Saurabh Dube Dube ranges widely and globally – from histories of empires and genealogies of disciplines to recent Dalit artwork from India – to explore and carefully delineate a tension he regards as fundamental to the formation of the modern: the modern subject’s inevitable entanglement with those subject to modernity. A tour de force, this book offers a critical, timely and powerful sequel to postcolonial and subaltern studies. – Dipesh Chakrabarty, University of Chicago ISBN 978-1-920689-99-5 print ISBN 978-1-928357-45-2 e-book

Global Bodies in Grey Zones Health, Hope, Biotechnology

Editors: Susanne Lundin, Charlotte Kroløkke, Michael N. Petersen & Elmi Muller This book departs from the current globalised market in biological material and treatments. Three different forms of medical travel are in focus: transplant travel, fertility travel and stem cell travel. The global travelling includes legally organised cross-border care, as well as completely illegal activities involving trafficking in bodies and body parts implicating a range of people, technologies and treatments. The theoretical focus is grey zones – various places where people, money, bodies, and so on constitute components in an international market. Imagined Liberation

Xenophobia, Citizenship and Identity in South Africa, Germany and Canada Heribert Adam & Kogila Moodley

On a spectrum of hostility towards irregular migrants, South Africa ranks on top, Germany in the middle and Canada at the bottom. South African xenophobic violence by impoverished slum dwellers is directed against fellow Africans. Why would a society that liberated itself in the name of human rights turn against people who escaped human rights violations or unlivable conditions at home? What happened to the expected African solidarity? Why do former victims become victimisers? Imagined Liberation asks what xenophobic societies can learn from other immigrant societies which avoided the backlash against multiculturalism in Europe. STIAS SERIES Theory from the South

How Euro-America is evolving toward Africa

Jean Comaroff & John Comaroff Rarely is the Global South seen as a source of theory and explanation for world historical events. Yet, as many nation-states of the Northern Hemisphere experience increasing fiscal meltdown, state privatisation, corruption, ethnic conflict and other crises, it seems as though they are evolving southward, so to speak, in both positive and problematic ways. Is this so? How? In what measure? This view from the South renders key problems of our time at once strange and familiar, giving an ironic twist to the evolutionary pathways long assumed by social scientists. A View from the Global South

OCKERT DUPPER & KAMALA SANKARAN | EDITORS

Affirmative action is a critical feature of the prevailing social and economic policy in South Africa and also in other developing countries, yet research in the area remains largely underdeveloped. This is troubling, particularly when you consider the significant impact of affirmative action and the transformative role which affirmative action is intended to play in society. For this reason, Affirmative Action: A View from the Global South provides insight into a range of aspects of the affirmative action policies in seven countries from Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East. In addition to these national perspectives, important theoretical concepts and international developments on affirmative action are explored. Affirmative Action: A View from the Global South provides a balanced view of both the value of the idea of affirmative action as well as the difficulties encountered in implementing affirmative action policies, and sets the scene for the future nuancing of strategies to achieve the laudable goals that affirmative action seeks to deliver.

STIAS SERIES Genres of Critique

Law, Aesthetics and Liminality Editors: Karin van Marle &Â Stewart Motha

Genres of Critique seeks to open and explore the liminal space of critique at the intersection of law, aesthetics and politics. The chapters in this volume elaborate and expand the meaning and significance of critique through an engagement with aesthetic forms. Although this endeavour has wider significance, the focus is primarily on South Africa. The various contributions arose out of a process of reading, writing and discussion among visiting scholars at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), Stellenbosch University, South Africa, in 2010. The project responds to the limits of the transplantation of critical legal studies into different jurisdictions, especially South Africa. The chapters develop an approach to critical legal thinking that is conscious of critique as a problem of genre and seek to open up this problem of genre in the context of critical legal studies. A CREATIVE SPACE FOR THE MIND

The Humanist Imperative in South Africa includes twenty-six multi-disciplinary essays and reflections originally presented and discussed at the two symposia of the New Humanism Project held at STIAS in June 2009 and February 2010. The authors are leading academics and public figures drawn from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, all sharing a common concern: “How can our fledgling democracy not only survive but flourish? The essays focus on the humanisms that have shaped our society and its constitution; what it means to be human beings together in South Africa; and issues of economic and social justice, human dignity and rights. Developing mutual respect, listening critically and constructively to each other, and promoting a wider conversation are of vital importance. Fostering programmes that enable all people to attain their full potential are identified as an urgent priority.

John de Gruchy, a theologian and social scientist, is Emeritus Professor at the University of Cape Town, Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University and Fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study.

HUMANIST IMPERATIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA

THE

JOHN W DE GRUCHY | ED

This book is an outcome of the conversation that occurred during the five days of intense discussion at two symposia initiated by the ‘New Humanism Project’. The struggle for a more humane society is both local and universal, and increasingly these are connected in our time. So while the conversation focused specifically on South Africa, the discussion was neither parochial nor insular in its scope and character. Hopefully, then, people beyond South Africa will find the contents of this book of value to them in terms of their own contexts.
