EDITORIAL WE WILL MISS YOU TENDAI MADONDO At the pan-African lecture where she was the master of ceremony, Tendai informed me about the impending departure of the Madondos back to Harare. Though the news pinched me like a pin would do to the skin, however, I have come to terms with their decision. Tendai Madondo is a woman bestowed with beauty and brain. A quintessential leader and enigma in multicultural Ireland, Mrs Madondo carved out a niche for herself while she lived in Ireland. At the valedictory party, people from different ethnicity and background gracefully attended, with tears streaming down the cheeks of a few. From the gathering at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire, one can say more about Tendai Madondo: A wife and devout Christian who is well pleased to Farai Madondo and her Church parishioners. How did this beautiful and intelligent wife and mother of three make a strong impact in Ireland? How did she nurture a young family and still serve the community meritoriously? Tendai Madondo talked exclusively to AfricaWorld Newspaper on her life in Ireland and other issues. It will be published in next edition while full interview is on AfricaWorld TV. We will surely miss this classic woman, one that is beautiful and brainy, a ‘primus inter pares’ among her contemporaries. We wish you and your family all the best in life Tendai Madondo. Come in. Uka.

STEPHEN KESHI By Ukachukwu Okorie

S

tephen Okechukwu Keshi was born on 31 January 1962 in Lagos to parents from Illah in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. Often nicknamed “the Boss” by his contemporaries, Keshi’s life revolves around football and the quest for black African Coaches to be recognised. He came to global stage when, at a young age, he joined the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Keshi started his playing career with the African Continental Bank (ACB) Lagos where he played a total of 10 games in 1979 before joining New Nigeria Bank (NNB) where he plied his trade from 1980 –1984. From NNB, where he played about 42 games, Keshi was transferred to Stade d’Abidjan in 1985, and then to Africa Sports in 1986, all in the Ivory Coast. His rise further took him to play professionally in Europe, starting with Belgian side Lokeren between 1986 - 1987, Anderlecht 1987 - 1991 and Racing Club de Strasbourg in France between 1991 - 1993. He came back to Belgium, starring for FC Molenbeek Brussels Strombeek, often referred to as FC Brussels from 1993 - 1994. In 1995, Stephen Keshi went to the United States to play for Central California Valley Hydra in Stockton California, Sacramento Scorpions in 1996 and the Perils FA of

Malaysia from 1997 - 1998. In 2000, a testimonialmatch was arranged for Keshi in Lagos to cap his illustrious football playing career and service to his fatherland. Keshi debuted for Nigeria in 1981 at the age of 19 under Brazilian born Otto Martins Glória who led the African giant to glory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, which the team won 3-0 in the final in Lagos against Algeria. From 1981 until 1995, when he retired from the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Keshi played 64 games, scoring on 9 occasions. He went on to captain Nigeria to another Africa Cup of Nations glory in Tunisia 1994 under the guidance of Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof. While Keshi led

the Super Eagles as a Captain, Nigeria witnessed a rise in prestige around the world as a flurry of successes in the field of play sent jitters to opponents’ spines. Stephen Keshi ventured into coaching with the Super Eagles as an assistant before having an unsuccessful stint with the Junior Eagles at the 2001 African Youth Championship, which also served as qualification for the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. He broke records by qualifying the unfancied Republic of Togo

Unfortunately, Togo put in a dismal performance and failed to advance to the knockout stage in 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. However, in 2007, the Togolese football authorities reengaged Keshi in time for a friendly against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. In April 2008, Keshi became the manager of the Mali national football team, taking them to the Nations Cup in 2010 which was hosted by Angola from 10 January to 31 January 2010. Stephen Keshi was appointed coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles National in 2011, leading them to qualification for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, which they won, defeating impressive Burkina Faso 1–0 in the final. Keshi thus became the first black African to win the prestigious trophy as Captain and Coach. After qualifying Nigeria to Brazil 2014, Keshi became the only man in Africa to lead his country as a captain and coach. Keshi is known as a gentle football technocrat but is vocal in the empowerment of coaches of African extraction. His desire to carve a niche for himself and African coaches has often pitched him against Nigerian football administrators, who are generally believed to favour foreign managers, especially those that can satisfy their corrupt demands.

J

oseph Chukwu is a Consultant Paediatrician with the Health Service Executive (HSE). He is the CEO, Manorfield Foundation in Dublin and Founder RateNigerianHospitals.com Born in Enugu Nigeria, Dr. Joseph lives in Dublin where he furthered his medical career at the Royal College of Surgeons. He has led in Community based initiatives, leading to recognition from AfricaWorld Newspaper as an ‘Unsung Hero’. Recently, he established the RateNigerianHospitals.com for Africans and people of the world to access Nigerian hospitals. AfricaWorld had a brief chart with Dr. Joseph Chukwu and below is excerpt: Could you explain what RateNigerianHospitals is all about? Answer: RateNigerianHospitals.com was established to provide an avenue for health service users in Nigeria to express their views on their level of satisfaction with the health service they receive in the country. This is part of the effort to improve the quality of health care in Nigeria. This site will be helpful not only to the health service users and the health care providers but also to the agencies that fund these services. The site also has a searchable directory

of hospitals in Nigeria. One could search for a particular hospital by its name and by its location. The information available in the directory include hospital name, the year it was founded, location address, email address and telephone number. When was it established? ANS: The website was established mid July this year How will you rate Nigerian hospitals? ANS: I think it all depends on the hospital. While some of the hospitals are quite good a lot of them that I have visited are substandard. I think it is left for the service users to judge for themselves. It all depends on their expectations and needs. Whether the hospitals they have attended are able to meet their needs and expectations is up to the service users to decide. RateNigerianHospitals.com provides that avenue for them to let others how satisfied they are with the services provided to them. What motivated you to set up this project? The desire to see that the quality of health care service in Nigeria is greatly improved within the shortest period of time motivated me to set up this site. Letting the consumers say what they feel about the quality of health service provided to them also give the power back to the consumers. They will be able to vote with their feet if a health care provider is not doing a good job. People would be able to make informed decisions about which health care providers they would like to attend

based on how other customers who have been there feel about the service. More like looking at the rating of a particular hotel before booking to stay a night there. What is your profession and knowledge of Nigerian health structure and process? I am a medical doctor. I obtained my primary medical degree from a medical school in Nigeria. I worked in the Nigerian health service for a few years before leaving the country for further training abroad. I am still in contact with my family and medical colleagues in Nigeria. Tell us more about your target audience Everybody who has ever used the health service in Nigeria is my target audience. I am sure most Nigerians living at home and abroad have encountered the health service at one point or the other in their lifetime. Some people have not been in direct contact with the service but their relatives would have been in contact. Such people can still rate the health service based on their perception of the quality of service their relatives received.

he ANC group in Ireland held a farewell party in honour of the outgoing South African Ambassadorto Ireland, His Excellency, Jeremiah Ndou. The farewell party was held on the 9th of November, 2013 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Airport Road. In his speech, one of the organizers of the event, Michael Segoapa expressed his gratitude to a man who has supported South Africans and their interests here in Ireland and remarked that His Excellency is first a comrade before he being is an ambassador. The Ambassador who was touched by the send-forth package said that the ANC Ireland have become a part of him. He admonished the audience that South Africa is a beautiful country and the citizens should always be proud of who they are, what they have achieved irrespective of the so-many tribes in the country, that they should not

focus on the negatives, because they cannot be defined by the crimes in South Africa which is not just peculiar to them, but something found in several countries. He agreed that there are challenges in South Africa but there are a lot of positives too. He also thanked the ANC group which he saw as having developed good and wonderful policies for South Africa. He also told them to work so hard and arm themselves with tools of analysis, that ANC is bigger than an individual and should not be treated as if it is an individual. He also encouraged the interaction of Africans within Ireland and urged all to build such relations and make them strong. For him “South Africa is an integral part of Africa. Our destiny as South Africans is the destiny that Africa will take”. He said this because he sees the African continent becoming an economic giant in the near future.

He began his ambassadorial role in 1998 to the Democratic Republic of Congo, but because of the crises in the country at that time, he was made to stay in the neighbouring country of Zimbabwe. He remained there for six years. At the end of his stay in office, he was sent to Libya. It was after his tenure in Libya that he was sent to Ireland. He arrived in the middle of February 2010 in the middle of the preparation of the National Day of South Africa. For the Ambassador, “the primary purpose of a diplomat is to build stronger relations between the two countries”, this he believed he has carried out to his best. The party was attended by members of the ANC Ireland group, some members of the Sinn Fein and other friends of the Ambassador.

SECRETS REAL MEN HIDE FROM THEIR WOMEN

T

he bad news: men lie and keep secrets from the women they love.

The good news: They’re not doing it to hurt you, in fact more often than not, they’re doing it because they’re either insecure or trying to protect you. Monica and Adam have known each other since childhood. Although the attraction between the two is palpable, Adrian knows Lena is off limits, after all she’s the little sister of his best friend Jared. Now, all three work together as officers in the special ops and Monica and Adam are sent on a top-secret mission to Pakistan where they must pretend to be married. An unexpected twist compels Adam to keep a secret from Monica so big, that coming clean could destroy both their worlds. AfricaWorldnews Agony Corner previously asked real women about the secrets they keep from their men. Now, we’ve asked real men, “What do you hide from the women you love?” Check out some of their shocking responses below. Then, read on for some expert thoughts on the differences between the secrets men and women keep from their partners. I made significantly less money than my last two girlfriends and have thousands of dollars in credit card debt. - Gregory, 28. This one’s not exactly a secret, but I’m balding! - Ade, 31 I used to be way more in shape than I am now. - Funmi, 25 My penis is a little crooked, but it works! - Anonymous, 26 I used to date a model. I’m not ashamed, but I know it would make my girlfriend self-conscious when she shouldn’t be. - Ferdinand, 34 All my serious relationships have been with women, but I’m bi. - Samuel, 38 I hate my job and want to go back to school, but I don’t know what I want to do. -Joe, 36 Erectile dysfunction is a side effect of one of the medications I’m taking. -

Emeka, 30 Now that some real guys have come clean, it’s time to consider what secrets your guy might have. Now, lets look at how men approach secrets differently. Below are 4 interesting insights. 1) Men are more likely to feel insecure about their finances and careers. In 2013, most women work, and most families are dual-income. But men are still more likely than women to express anxieties over their careers and finances. Men are raised, in large part, to be providers and when they feel they’re not providing, or their provisions aren’t up to snuff, insecurities seep in. These insecurities aren’t just about their own selfworth, but

also their worth as boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. Men are also more likely to define themselves solely by their work, which can be especially painful in a troubled economy 2) Women aren’t the only ones insecure about their bodies. Our culture’s obsession with perfect looks — often at the cost of starvation, plastic surgery, and grueling workouts — doesn’t just hurt women. A number of men expressed insecurities about the way they look, from their weight to their hairlines and even the size and shape of their manliest parts. Consider this a reason to tell your man how attractive he is. He just might need a reminder. 3) Men sometimes keep secrets to protect their partners.

We tend to associate secret-keeping with self-protection — hiding the truth from partners to avoid getting in trouble for bad behavior. But some men keep secrets to spare their partner’s feelings. One man we spoke to, Ferdinand, knows his girlfriend will feel insecure about her appearance, if she finds out he previously dated a model. Ferdinand’s heart sounds like it’s in the right place, but his girlfriend will probably find out somehow and then what? Because he can’t change his dating history, his task in this relationship is to make his current partner feel as secure as possible. When your past relationships affect your current one, you have two choices: You can either work through your partner’s insecurities with honesty and openness, or you can move on to another partner who accepts your past choices. You cannot and should not stay with someone who can’t seamlessly weave those choices into the whole of who you are or who punishes you for making them. 4) Caring doesn’t always mean sharing. When men don’t reveal all to their partners, it’s not always about a lack of trust or love. It’s a matter of gender norms. Modern men are more in touch with their feelings, but many still struggle to be vulnerable. But it’s a worthy struggle. Sharing secrets, as similar or as different as they may be, helps partners grow closer. The good news: Women are especially equipped for the task. Because women communicate their innermost thoughts and feelings on a near-daily basis with friends and loved ones, when someone reveals a skeleton or secret, they’re already in the mode of listening and acceptance. The easiest way to get your partner to open up might be to open up first. Finally, here is a word of advise: Your relationships should not be a cat and rat or a hide and seek affair. Please both of you should continue to do things to make everyday exciting for each other. Every individual, no matter the age, yearn for true love and affection. No woman or man wants to be made to feel old even when they both know that they are getting old. Please do take care of yourselves and each other.

Chad has signed an agreement with the Vatican, recognising the Catholic Church in Chad as a legal entity. The move comes as the hold of Islamic e x t re m i s t s weakens in a country that has previously been plagued by attacks on churches.

The little improvements that Apple made to iOS 7 has caused some changes or movement in the old features and sometimes this is not noticeable. As we know, smart phones batteries are usually challenged with considering the many apps available. Some of these apps require large memory to run properly and in many cases, we switch screen, leaving apps running in the back ground. This attitude can ruin the life of the battery or result into a slow performance of the phone. The best option in this circumstance is to close these apps that are idle. T h e iPhone for example has developed from the iPhone 3 to

The government claimed it would not sign a political deal with a group its UNbacked army had already defeated and demanded a declaration from the rebels that they would not take up arms again.

iPhone 5 and the iOS running on each of this series had also been affected. In the iPhone 4 series, a double click on the home button would open all the running applications. Also, when you place and hold the app displayed for few seconds, it offers an option to close. Press the close (X) button and repeat for as many idle app to free up the memory for a better performance. The iOS 7’s has a different approach to exit and prevent apps from running in the background but this is not easily obvious. All you have to do is double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking view as we had described earlier, then swipe up on the screenshot of the app you want to exit. The app will disappear off the screen, and release its resources to the OS. That was easy right, No? Don’t feel bad if you couldn’t figure it out. While many of the new features will be familiar to veteran iOS users, some aren’t immediately obvious. One of the first things that I had difficulty figuring out was how to force-quit my apps and that’s why I decided to share it on Tech_Pilot. Another significant change is the spotlight search. The primary function of the Spotlight Search is to quickly locate items on your iPhone from all the storage areas, including Contacts, media, apps, and other elements. If you have a lot of apps, music, or other things, it is faster to simply Spotlight

Search for it than to have to browse through the available menus or screens to find it. It is not beneficial to use it for apps that are on your front couple of pages, so you want to begin utilizing this when you need to quickly search without much browse time. To bring up Spotlight Search on iOS 6, you will go back to your main home screen and then slide to the right, which will bring up the search box. Now, in iOS 7, all you have to do is swipe down on any page of your home screen to reveal the search bar. From there, you can use Spotlight as you did before and type in whatever app, contact, or document you’re trying to find. As before, you can head over to Settings -> General -> Spotlight Search to choose which options you want to appear during your searches. The fascinating development here is the fact that, you could do a spotlight search on any page.

FOLKTALE WHY THE VULTURE HAS NO FRIEND

Once upon a time in the land of animals and birds, there was peace and love between all. Birds andanimals of all kinds lived together in harmony. Apartments tunneled in caves were shared by all as birds even weaved nests in human caves. The earth was filled with brotherhood as much as green food was plenty. As the population of the earth grew, it was agreed that their must be leadership and authority vested in either an animal or bird. However, it was decided that it must rotate between them. The birds, after much discussion, conceded the first shot at leadership to the animals. They told the animals to decide among themselves and present the first Emperor of the earth as agreed. As such, a man was presented by all animals and the earth came under his authority unanimously. The birds tallied along with the hope of succeeding man after his death. Unfortunately for the birds, there was a conspiracy between humans and other animals. They planned to short-change the birds and rotate it between them instead. It happened that during the reign of the humans, there was drought on earth as no rain dropped from the sky for a couple of years. This brought tough times on earth as the human leadership demanded hard work and commitment from all in communal effort to grow drought friendly crops. As this period demanded serious manual labour from all, it was evident that the vulture was lazy and cunning. They would laze around only to eat more to annoy other birds and animals. The human leadership did not take this kindly as they felt cheated by a little creature without bigger brains. This trend continued until life came back like it used to be but sooner rather than later, the Emperor died. The death threw the throne open but it was previously agreed that the next occupant shall be one of the birds. Though grudgingly, humans and their counterparts asked the birds to nominate among them. After tough deliberations and arguments, the birds came up with the choice of the vulture but it perturbed all how it came to happen. The humans were the first to object to the choice, arguing about the vulture’s laziness in the case of tough times. Other animals joined the humans in backing off from recognizing the bird’s choice and soon, there was a crisis of leadership. The birds agreed to back the vulture due to certain strange qualities it possessed that frightened the animals, of which some included patience and cunningness. However, their support became shaky as the whole issue threatened earthly harmony, making them begin to withdraw their support for the vulture. Meanwhile, chaos started to set in when other animals sought the backing of humans to reign as they had agreed but the latter backed off, instead manoeuvering to continue leading with the pretence of holding forth until calm was restored. However, the birds regrouped and nominated another to replace the vulture but the victim could not take it. On the other hand, crisis of confidence brewed between the animals over the craftiness of humans. Finally, war seemed imminent and the vulture took his offspring off with a parting warning to other birds to watch out for the worst of humans and their fellow animals. For all animals, he promised to stage a come-back for revenge at the right time. A war later broke out on earth when the vulture and its lineage were out. As a form of payback, they always hovered and patiently perched mocking a dying animal or bird to give up fast so they could eat it as a way of pay-back. Since that earthly war, they do not mix with other birds or animals because of lack of trust.

And squeezing in total calamity Ur gaze make me think of it Ur lips send me invitation For a journey of lubrication A prelude of boob suffocation Twisting the pinnacles In a game of manipulation And aggressive fornication Till thy come to sensation

NIGERIA’S 2014 WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION AND ITS ECONOMIC BENEFITS

N

igeria, as a country that has lurched from crisis to crisis and seem to constantly stand on the precipice of breaking up has been united again with one voice by her qualification for Brazil 2014. As a nation whose cleavages run deep on ethnic, religious and regional issues, Nigeria as a nation with different and heart rendering issues comes together when the Super Eagles play and win. Yesterday an Igbo man, the national coach of Nigeria Mr. Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, his northern brother, Daniel Amokachi and his Yoruba coaching partner Ike Shorumu brought Nigerians joy and banded Nigeria together towards Brazil 2014. The three

coaches would arguably be described as the three races that make Nigeria what she is. The three large races that mean what Nigeria is today. In spite of where they are from, even the minority tribes in Nigeria accept them as one with love and kindness. This is football, an event that unites all Nigerians and makes Nigerians forget their races, tribes, pains, religions and misgivings. Lending credence to this Mark Maza writes: “Nigeria that has remained immune to being politicized – sports, generally, and specifically, football. The ardent fervour and passion with which Nigerians follow football has turned into a religion… Many Nigerians follow the major European leagues, and

have adopted one club or the other as their favourite, memorizing the players and analyzing matches with so much passion that you would mistake them for managers. This passionate support is, e x p e c t e d l y, transferred to the Nigerian national team whenever they are playing other countries. But the most beautiful thing is how once Nigeria is playing, all differences, usually pronounced on a daily basis, are forgotten and only thing matters: that we are Nigerian. It is the only time when no one talks about the religion, ethnicity or place of origin of our players; when there are no heated debates on zoning or federal character; when, for once, we act, think and respond truly as one nation. Irrespective of where a player is from and where a match is being watched, the fans love or loathe him entirely based on his performance, and with completely no reference to where he is from, what language he speaks, or how and who he worships. I believe that our love for football binds us strongly as a nation that a goal by an Ahmed Musa makes militants in the NigerDelta erupt with joy in the same way as a beautiful performance by a Victor Moses brings Boko Haram fundamentalists in the North to cheers. But more than that, the sense of unity we exhibit during football matches involving Nigerian national teams feeds the hope in me that a true and lasting national unity is possible; that one day, Nigerians will agree, celebrate, promote and accept each other no matter the religious, ethnic and regional differences we

have.’’ That unity and love of Nigeria was echoed on the 16th November when continental champions Nigeria became the first African side to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after beating visiting Walya Ibex of Ethiopia by 2-0 in Nigeria’s Southern city of Calabar. The defeat of the Walya Ibex of Ethiopia came through Liverpool’s striker Victor Moses and substitute Obinna Nsofor. Therefore Nigeria becomes the first African nation heading to Brazil in 2014. Nigeria became the 22nd team to make Brazil 2014, booking a place at their fifth World Cup. As Matt Cheetham opines: “having come from behind to win the first leg 2-1 in Ethiopia, the Super Eagles were heavy favourites to finish the job off on home turf and did so comfortably. A 20th-minute penalty from Chelsea’s Victor Moses effectively sealed their progression before Victor Obinna added a final goal in the closing stages. Boosted by recent Africa Cup of Nations success, Nigeria will be hoping to emulate their best World Cup performances and qualify through to the Round of 16.’’ THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO NIGERIA. Writing on the Eagles’ World Cup ticket and benefits for Nigerian businesses in The Business Eye, Gerry Armstrong states: “ The Super Eagles will get $1m preparation cost for qualifying alone, and another $8.56m for the group stage. The round of 16 will see the National team pocket $9.6m and if they make it to the quarter final, which the team has not managed since debuting in 1994, they will get $14.99m. A semi finals berth and third place finish will attract $19.27m and $21.41m respectively. In the event the team makes it to the final but loses, they will get $25.69m, but if they can go ahead to win the World Cup, Nigeria stands to earn a whopping $32.12m. Although these incentives from FIFA seem mouth watering… the emphasis is on the opportunities open to Nigerians businesses from Eagles’ qualification for Brazil.’’ “Nigeria’s qualification transcends football; the benefits go beyond the game, it covers the entire gamut of the football industry and allied areas. By allied sectors I mean the media, travel business etc.” notes Harry Iwuala managing Director of Youdees, a marketing communication and consulting company. “Let’s start with the media. They’re going to generate huge revenues from advertising because most of the sponsors of the Super Eagles are going to latch onto the media platform to leverage their

affinity with the team. There will be a surfeit of goodwill messages that will be sent to the team underlining the fact that they (sponsors) are part of the team’s success. “On the side of copy sales there is also going to be a boom. The interest that will be generated by stories coming out of the World Cup will necessarily see a rise in sales. Again, a lot of people would want to use the opportunity to travel to Brazil to watch the world Cup; the travel industry will also experience a boom.” Godwin Spiff Sagbama, Managing Director of Hally Sports International a sports PR and integrated marketing communication further illuminates the spinoffs from making Brazil which he says will impact the economy at a macro level. “Let’s start from the people who will want to travel to Brazil to watch the World Cup. The whole world sees Brazil as the home of football, the country is 13th in the world in terms of sports tourism and after the Rio Olympics in 2016 they are likely to climb to top five in the world,.” “Several companies, even those that are not normally interested in football will want to see how they can activate their brands in keeping with the general mood. These brands know how much Nigerians love football, so they are going to build products that will key into this following for the game in the country.” I can confidently tell you that immediately Nigeria’s ticket is confirmed after the second leg against Ethiopia, brands like Guinness, Coca Cola, which is also a FIFA partner will come up with a new advert. They will be in your face and begin to drive peoples’ attention to Brazil- that ‘Nigeria is coming.’ They will activate global products and bring them to the local audiences that have qualified for the World Cup. Ivory Coast qualified too, drawing with Senegal to a 1-1 ending and going through thanks to their 3-1 win in the first leg. Senegal got ahead on 77 minutes through Moussa Sow. But Sabri Lamouchi’s men won after many nervous exchanges. And Salomon Kalou would be described as the man of the match who got the Elephants to Brazil. This will be a third World Cup for Ivory Coast, having qualified for 2006 and 2010. Cameroon booked their world cup ticket too with two-goal Jean Makoun the hero. Pierre Webo put his side off to a great start, before Benjamin Moukandjo made it 2-0 on the half hour mark. This is the seventh time Cameroon has made it to the World Cup since 1982, reaching the quarterfinals once and winning four of their 20 games.
