Nearly 50 African leaders converged in Washington on Tuesday, December 13, to begin three days of talks on issues central to the future of the continent and the world, including health, food security, climate change, civil wars and even the exploration of outer space.
The U S -Africa Leaders Summit this week, the first one since 2014, comes as the world is struggling with urgent crises, some of which are having catastrophic effects on Africa. The continent is grappling with a food shortage worsened by both Russia’s war with Ukraine and supply chain problems arising from the Covid-19 pandemic
But U S officials say they also want to discuss forwardlooking topics such as commercial investments and technology that can have long-term benefits for the continent
“Over the next few days, we will be announcing additional investments to make it easier for students to participate in exchange programs between our countries, to increase trade opportunities for members of the African diaspora and to support African entrepreneurs and small businesses,” Secretary of State Antony J Blinken said at the summit’s opening event, a forum for what the State Department called “African and Diaspora Young Leaders ”
“Each of these investments is guided by one overarching goal: to continue building our partnership so that we can better address the shared challenges we face,” Mr Blinken said
The first day’s meetings were centered on critical topics including the environment, public health, democratic governance and security The governance and security session was hosted by Mr. Blinken; Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III; and Samantha Power, the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development Katherine Tai, the U S trade representative, led a ministerial conference on trade.
In the morning, Mr Austin and Mr Blinken discussed military cooperation with the leaders of Djibouti, Niger and Somalia “We recognize that African leadership remains key to confronting our era’s defining challenges of peace, security and governance,” Mr Austin said The Biden administration is trying to repair relations with African nations after President Donald J Trump largely ignored them and famously disparaged some in a White House meeting in 2018.
American officials are concerned about Chinese and Russian influence on the continent, as well as instability caused by famine, climate change, epidemics and wars. U S officials say they also want to help African countries create economic opportunities for their growing youth populations.

The Abena Dokua Educational Foundation (ADEF), a US-based charity organization, has organized its maiden annual fundraising event in Springfield, Virginia.
The event, which was held on October 29, 2022, was characterized by grace, gratitude and giving. The organization treated the audience of over 100 guests to its history, mission and vision encapsulated in emotional testimonies by past beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the President of ADEF, Kwaku Boateng, gave an update on previous projects, the prevailing needs of the educational sector in Ghana and what the organizational focus is. The President without mincing words entreated the guests to join hands with the organization to help students and educational institutions in Ghana. According to the president, the provision of safe and conducive learning environment for every student in Ghana is a goal for the organization

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H E Dr Mahamudu Bawumia addressed members and participants of the International Democrat Union (IDU) Forum 2022 in Washington D C on December 8 where he delivered the Keynote Address The Forum was under the theme “Russia, the war and African interests ”

rnest Mongezi Majenge is a South African innovator helping improve mobility for wheelchair users His invention has earned him the nickname ‘wheelchair doctor.’ His wheelchair comes with grooves that enable it to be pulled up and down stairs, according to ThisAbility.
Majenge’s invention was born out of research to understand the challenges that wheelchair users face. He realized that accessing buildings with stairs but no elevators or ramps was a major struggle for wheelchair users. So he developed the idea to invent a wheelchair that can climb stairs
Majenge started his company, 911 The Wheelchair Doctor and Manufacturing, in 2018, as a wheelchair repair service. He then moved into developing his off-road wheelchairs that will cater to people in townships, rural areas and on farms. “The wheelchair works by gripping onto the stairs to protect the user from falling off while someone easily pulls them up and down the stairs,” Majenge told ThisAbility.

The African Development Bank Group’s Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative has launched its second call for proposals for the Women Entrepreneurship Enablers program.
The initiative is targeting women’s business associations, incubators, accelerators, women-led cooperatives, and civil society organizations that promote the development of women entrepreneurs on the continent.
AFAWA is offering grants up to $250,000 to organizations and projects that enhance the viability and sustainability of formal women-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and enables them to access financing opportunities to grow their businesses
Successful proposals will demonstrate innovative approaches to building a supportive ecosystem for women’s entrepreneurship, aimed at improving access to finance for women SMEs.
Enablers are expected to develop a comprehensive and sustainable capacity-building program to enable access to finance in partnership with financial institutions.
Applicants from all 54 African countries are welcomed Eligible organizations may request one-time funding between $100,000 and $250,000, which will be provided through the Bank’s Gender Equality Trust Fund.
“Our first call for Women Entrepreneurship Enablers proposals drew nearly a thousand applications from organizations doing some groundbreaking work to equip women with the tools to expand their businesses,” said Malado Kaba, the Bank’s Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society
“We are excited to pursue this initiative by bringing in a second cohort and funding the development of their capacity building activities allow-
ing women entrepreneurs to obtain significant financing and scale,” she said.
The initiative is one of the Bank’s flagship gender-focused programmes which seeks to accelerate growth and employment creation across African economies, by closing the financing gap for women.
It aims to unlock $5 billion in financing for small and mediumsized enterprises owned and managed by women by 2026. AFAWA is supported by the Bank’s partners and donors, G7 countries, as well as the Netherlands, Sweden, and the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi).
The funding, which aims to strengthen the ecosystem for women’s entrepreneurship, is in line with the Bank’s agenda to further gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“Entrepreneurship enablers play an important role in bolstering the skills of women to establish ‘bankable’ SMEs. However, the enablers themselves often face challenges, such as viable longterm growth plans and lack of financing, which reduce their reach, impact, and sustainability” said Esther Dassanou, AFAWA’s Manager.

12-year-old chess master Tanitoluwa “Tani” Adewumi and his family, who fled Boko Haram in northern Nigeria in 2017, have officially been granted asylum in the United States.
Tani’s family first applied for asylum in 2019 and are elated that the long process has come to an end. “We felt so good and thank God for His mercy upon us Thanks to our attorneys and the Americans, they are wonderful people,” his father Kayode Adewumi told Chess.com.
Tani made headlines at 8 years old, after defeating 73 of the best chess players in his age group in New York to win his division in the state championship. Tanzania’s president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has canceled Independence Day celebrations scheduled for Friday, Dec 9 and directed that the budget instead be used to build dormitories for children with special needs.
The 61st Independence Day event was to cost $445,000, money that will be used to build eight dormitories in primary schools around the country
Tanzania’s minister of state, George Simbachawene, on Monday said the money had been disbursed He said the East African country will celebrate Independence Day by having public dialogues on development.

Amidst applause and handshakes, the government of Germany on Tuesday officially handed over 22 stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria.
The artefacts were looted from Nigeria in the colonial era and about 125 years later have found their way back to their home in what is meant to right the wrong of colonialists
"We are here to return the Benin Bronzes to where they belong- to the people of Nigeria We are here to right a wrong; officials from my country once bought the bronzes knowing that they have been stolen... " Germany's Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, said at the event in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
The 22 are part of the total 1130 bronzes held in Germany which the European country promised to return.

According to the report, relative to GDP, Rwanda's performance is above expectations for its level of development, however, Rwanda produces fewer innovation outputs relative to its level of innovation investments.
The GII report of 2021 shows that Rwanda performs better in innovation inputs than innovation outputs, which was an improvement compared to 2020 and 2019.
It reveals the most innovative economies in the world, ranking the innovation performance around 132 economies while highlighting innovation strengths and weaknesses
The 15th edition of the GII also ranks Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco, which have significantly moved up to developed economies in the rankings over the past few years, as the most innovative African countries.
Tunisia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe performed above expectations under the lower-middle income category, while Mozambique, and Burundi "outperformed on innovation relative to their development" in the low-income group.

Parents who broke record when they welcomed nine babies at once (nonuplets) have finally returned home after 19 months in an intensive care clinic
Mother Halima Cissé, 27, and her husband Abdelkader Arby, 36, from Mali, spent almost two years at the specialist Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca, Morocco, following the birth of their nonuplets in May 2021.
They have now been discharged and were on Tuesday, Dec. 14, preparing to meet family and friends in Mali’s capital Bamako, and they will then head on to Timbuktu.
“It’s been a long wait, with plenty of tears, but the babies are now all fighting fit, and everybody is delighted to be coming home,” a close family friend in Mali told Mail Online.
“They are getting lots of support from the Malian government and – God Willing – are now going to enjoy a lovely new home in Timbuktu

You may have noticed five distinct chairs of African origin in the last scenes of the $250 million Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie, and wondered what they mean and their significance.
At face value, Ethiopian-American designer Jomo Tariku, who is behind the symbolic chairs, said his idea was to export the work of Black designers to a diverse audience and promote the African heritage. Tariku’s artistic work is a result of the inspiration he draws from his early childhood days in Ethiopia, as reported by Dezeen.
These five chairs which were showcased in Wakanda Forever are Nyala, Mukecha, Boraatii, Ashanti and Dogon The Nyala was featured at the end of the living room of Wakanda Forever. Tariku drew inspiration from the Nyala mountain antelope from the Bale Mountains in East Africa The horns and legs of the antelope provided the stimulation for the carving of the armrests and legs of the chair
He said he connects with nature and that is where he picks most of his designs He said another area where he draws inspiration is from books and research he conducts. He added that when the inspiration hits him from observing the things he loves, he quickly pencils silhouettes down for later carvings of the artistic work The result, according to him, is
the Nyala chair in the high-impact movie.
The Mukecha also appeared in the wrapping scene of Wakanda Forever in the same setting as Nyala The Mukecha is a wooden chair consisting of orange rings, referencing the neck rings on the bronze busts from the kingdom of Benin “We have barely touched our own resources to do design work as Africans,” he told Dezeen. “We have a lot to contribute to the library of design by using our culture so within the limited time I have in proceeding with my career, I want to highlight the works of obviously myself and other African designers ”
The Boraatii, according to Tariku, was one of the three significant works the Wakanda Forever team wanted badly on sets including Ashanti and Dogon They wanted the work in its authentic form with no embellishments.
The Boraatii is quite novel and has no links to any ancient design. The Boraatii has a triangular base that was inspired by a headrest of Ethiopian origin He said these are works that he invested a lot of man-hours in carving. He explained that when he has major work, he solicits support from other builders to carry it through, but, it was different with the Wakanda Forever project
Tariku said with the Ashanti stool, he picked the art impressions from the West African nation of
Ghana He said he has a certain affinity for Ashanti stools and it is one of his prized works of art He said his difficulty is how to produce an Ashanti stool that has a touch of originality but does differ a bit from the traditional ones
He said one distinct feature about how he names his works is closely linked with where he either got the inspiration or the country it is associated with. The Ashanti stool, for example, is connected to the Ashanti traditional area in Ghana hence the name, he said.
The designer said the Dogon is what sums up the African heritage he sought to portray He assembled the five chairs in the final scene of Wakanda Forever He added a touch of a historical relic to give the scene a variety of African culture with coffee pots called Ebena and basket tables from Ethiopia.

The library started with Paul’s private collection during his studies in New York He invested his income and savings in books on photography and filmmaking, hoping to bridge the gap between both the unavailability and inaccessibility of such books in Africa Others were donated by institutions such as the International Center of Photography and the Howard Greenberg Gallery
After years of investing and collecting books in New York and other libraries across the world, Paul returned to Ghana in 2021 to start Dikan, a home to photographers and other creatives that tell impactful stories.
In the short-term Paul hopes to secure and make other visual instructional materials accessible both online and offline by securing iPads, and laptops at the Dikan library.
An ultra modern photo library and exhibition centre which is expected to boost photography and visual story telling that target at harnessing imagery resources across the continent has been commissioned at South La neighborhood in Accra
Known as Dikan Centre, the multi million dollar project which is an initiative of the GhanaianAmerican trained documentary photographer, Paul Ninson has in stock over 30,000 photo books.
It will offer a golden opportunity to facilitate photographic talent hunt and also be used as reference centre for the African photography industry.
Apart from the library, the Dikan Centre has an art gallery, photo studio and editing department where editing of films and other productions take place.
In his welcome address at the commissioning, the Founder and CEO of the Dikan Centre, Mr Paul Ampofo Ninson paid a glowing tribute to Mr Brandon Stanton, CEO of Creator of Humans of the United State of America for making his dream come to fruition
He said the centre is poised to mobilise efforts to sharpen the identity of the African creative arts industry that has been left untapped, undeveloped and unattended to for centuries, adding that the centre is gathering power and momentum to use the tools of visual education to bring into richness the continent’s creative –visual-arts industry into fine form and commercial viability
“We are determined never to leave behind any person, idea, history, culture, concept and facility necessary in re-imagining and firming the place of visual education in building a modernised African economy – If you know and have knowledge, see and/or hear, you are a storyteller Dikan will find you” said Mr Paul Ninson
The centre offers refresher courses and professional training programmes expected to attract photography students and visual story tellers from around the world.
The centre teaches leadership skills, critical thinking and innovation as a complement to its interdisciplinary programme with a strong foundation crafted around the African context.He said for centuries, African history, culture and society lacked the central ingredients for transforming its potential into a commercially viable creative-visual-arts workforce.
The Dikan journey pivots the very essence of the emerging African dream Mr Ninson expressed worry that the African continent is crippled by the enormous confrontations that undermine dreams of people while it is desperate to participate in the opportunities of this world
