Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American legislator has officially been sworn into office after winning elections last November.
Ilhan, who is always spotted with the hijab – head gear for Muslim women – made history by winning in a State House race to serve the people of Minnesota.
She stood on the ticket of the Democratic Farmer Labour (DFL) – affiliated to the Democratic Party, in Minneapolis District, defeating the Republican opposition
She will be a lawmaker in the Minnesota House of Representative for District 60B. Her legislative area comprises parts of the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, south-east Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.
Her first tweet after taking office on Tuesday read, ‘‘Today, we celebrated. Tomorrow, we continue to fight for social, economic, and racial justice for all Minnesotans. Forward together.’‘
As the first Somali-American, Muslim woman in the nation to hold an office at this level, she was celebrated widely in her home country with the President at the time, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extending congratulations
She is a policy analyst, coalition builder and community educator. She left Somalia due to the civil was then to Kenya before ending up in the US. Her twitter bio describes her as ‘‘Intersectional feminist, mom’‘ and legislator. “It’s the beginning of something new. This district has a legacy of making history. I am excited for our progressive values and to be able to be on the ground at the Capitol representing the diverse people of my district and being a champion with them and for them,” she said after winning the elections last year.
“Most recently, she served as the Director of Policy Initiatives at Women Organizing Women, where she empowered East African woman to take civic leadership roles in their community. Ilhan lives in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis with her husband and their three children,” her official website stated.

If you meet a Ugandan boy or man called Kakuru or Wasswa, he is likely to be an elder twin. The younger male twin is usually called Kato. These are names specially reserved for twins. Similarly, the Kalenjins in Kenya refer to the first born as Yator (first to open the way) and the last born Towett meaning last. The Yorubas call the first twin Taiwo (taste the world) and the second Kehinde (came after). In Ghana, the unisex names Panyin and Kakra, which basically mean older and younger, are used for twins. Day-born names Even before parents select a western or religious name for their child, the baby already has a name. Among some Ghanaian ethnic groups like the Akan, Ga, Ewe and Nzema, a name is automatically assigned based on the day the child is born. These day names correspond to the day of the week someone is born and so by default, everybody has one - though the name may not necessarily appear on official documents.

Faith-based names
Many parents express their religious beliefs through names but some this further than others. Edem Adjordor, from Ghana, believes there is a higher power than black magic and so through his three-year-old son, he sends a strong message to those he considers spiritual enemies.
Xolawubo, which means the creator (God) is greater than voodoo, is the middle name of his three-year-old son. Though his Dutch wife and in-laws find it difficult to pronounce the name, its meaning is all that matters to them. Across the continent, several local names have religious links. Among the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic groups in Nigeria, a name that starts or ends with Chi, Chukwu or Oluwa has some kind of reference to God. Olusegun means God conquers (Yoruba, Nigeria) Hailemariam means the power of Mary (Ethiopia) Mawufemor means God's way (Ewe ethnic group in Togo, Ghana, Benin) Makafui means I will praise God (Ewe ethnic group in Togo, Ghana, Benin) Day and night Among some groups in eastern and southern Africa, certain names are selected depending on the time of the day or season a child is born. Meet the ancestors Respected elders of the family may be dead but they continue to live on through their grandchildren. Parents often name babies after senior members of the clan whether dead or alive. But it is considered disrespectful to casually shout or call out the name of a senior family member that has been given to a child, so instead it is common to hear a child affectionately called Ouma (grandma) or Oupa (grandpa) in southern Africa.
Similarly in Senegal, a child who is named after a grandfather tends to bear the grandfather's nickname as well. So a baby boy often ends up being called Vieux (old man). Rude nicknames Somalia has a unique system. Most people have three names - the ones they were given, as well as that of their father and grandfather. But many also have nicknames, which are so common that they can find their way onto official ID cards.
Many people in Africa have several names - for example a name from their ethnic group, a Christian or Muslim name, as well as a name depending on the day, or time of day they were born.

Women, however, mostly get flattering nicknames like Lul (diamond), Macanay (sweet), Cod Weyne (rich voiced), Dahable (golden) and Indho Daraleey (gazelle eyes).

Dorgu, is the the Church of England’s first black bishop for 20 years.
Gospel says his life took a positive turn after changing his name from Misery
A statement from England’s Prime Minister Office said that The Queen approved the nomination of Dorgu to succeed the Right Reverend Michael Geoffrey Ipgrave.
Fifty eight-year-old Dorgu was born and brought up in Nigeria, where he trained as a doctor.
He studied at the London Bible College for his BA, and studied for his ordination at Oak Hill Theological College from 1993 to 1995 and also holds an MA in missiology. He is married to Mosun, a consultant child psychiatrist.
In the Yoruba tradition, it is not uncommon for each parent and grandparent to contribute at least one name. The child ends up with several names - each telling its own special story.
Dorgu told the Guardian UK his appointment was “a small step in the right direction”, adding: “Quite a lot of Nigerian Christians [in the Woolwich area] are from an Anglican background. Nigeria Beat Cameroon To Win The 2016 Women's Africa Cup Of Nations
Nigeria won the women's Africa Cup of Nations for an eighth time after a 1-0 win over hosts Cameroon in front of a capacity 40,000 crowd in Yaounde.
A late goal from Desire Oparanozie was enough for Nigeria to retain the trophy they won in Namibia two years ago.
The Super Falcons have dominated this competition, winning all but two of the ten editions played so far.
In a repeat of the 2014 final, Cameroon finished as runners-up again despite enjoying massive home support.
In front of Cameroon president Paul Biya, the hosts had the best of the first half, with a number of chances for Aboudi Onguene, but the Indomitable Lionesses failed to make the most of their opportunities.
In the second half, Oparanozie, who also scored Nigeria's winner against South Africa in their semi-final, hit the decisive goal again when she broke the deadlock seven minutes from time.
She followed through on a pass from the tournament's leading scorer Asisat Oshoala to give her team the trophy. The winning goal from Nigeria was a huge blow for the hosts and the thousands of fans who filled the 40,000 capacity Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium more than five hours before kick-off.
Security in the stadium was stepped up for the final because of the presence of President Paul Biya and roads were blocked for several kilometres around the stadium since early morning.

Betty Twumasi Responds to God’s Call to Serve in His Vineyard
The Christian Journal– To say Pastor Betty Prempeh Twumasi has been waiting for many years to fulfill her passion in the Lord will be an underestimated. But after many grueling days and nights at the bible school trying to sharpen her spiritual skills, the long awaited day came and when it happened, she embraced it with a heart of gratitude. Dressed in an all-white outfit like a beautiful bride awaiting the arrival of a groom, soaked in praise and thanksgiving, she could not contain her joy as she awaited the rest of the congregation for her big day; ordination into God’s vineyard.
Joined by her three children and husband equally dressed in white, Mrs. Twumasi could not hold back her joy. Waving a white handkerchief, she did not spare any opportunity as she took to the dance floor and praised her maker.
The well attended ceremony at the Berean Prayer Centre in the Bronx was officiated by Dr. Osei Kodie, General Overseer at Gates of Heaven Ministries International. He advised the newly ordained pastor to be circumspect in her decision making, insisting she must not allow her new position to compromise her respect for those she will be pastoring. Dr. Kodie said it was important Pastor Twumasi kept an open door policy, listen more and speak less, adding those who are called into the ministry have a responsibility of ensuring they remain humane to the cause.
Dr. Kodie said the ministry is not an avenue for settling scores with people she may perceived as adversaries but, rather, an opportunity to win souls for the

He reminded the newly ordained minister of the responsibilities expected of her especially when it comes to the challenges ahead. Dr. Kodie advised her to endure afflictions and not to contemplate a second of trading her calling when the challenges set in.
Dr. Kodie ended his sermon by advising Pastor Twumasi to extend the same service of humility at the church to her home; respect the husband and treat him with the needed courtesy as the lord has established.
Later at a reception, Pastor Twumasi used her speech to thank the husband for his enormous support throughout the process, disclosing that without him she wouldn’t have been able to fulfill the desire to serve God.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including the Asantefuohene of New York Nana Acheampong Tieku and his entourage.
Ohio based Deliverance FM USA a Ghanaian community online radio station on January 3rd 2017 took their outreach program to the Catholic Charity Shelter. They provided the homeless with several boxes of food and administered the Word of God to them as well. The Catholic Charities located at 1736 Superior Avenue, Cleveland OH provide services to counties of the greater Ohio area which include, but are not limited to homeless prevention programs, mental health counseling, services for older adults and senior citizens, emergency services, employment opportunities for teens, hot meals, and a food pantry.
They work closely with religious bodies, churches, public and private organizations and others to help the most vulnerable in any way they can. Rev. and Mrs. Dumfeh were joined on the mission by Ms. Rose Mensah known in Ghanaian Show business as Kyeiwaa to fete the homeless as part of their New Year outreach mission.
Deliverancefmusa was established in 2014 as an online community radio station by the couple to provide an avenue to reach out to the global community to build a prayer sustainable way of life and pursue spiritual warfare leading to breakthrough and redemption.
Through their ministry many souls have been won, yolks have been broken and testimonies are shared on their station on a daily basis. They have held successful outreach deliverance programs in many cities in the United States including Bronx, New York, North Brunswick, New Jersey, Cincinnati and Cleveland, Ohio.
Over the last 2 years they have made donations to several orphanages in Ghana on their mission trips.
The residents of the Shelter and the Management expressed their profound appreciation to the couple for their kind gesture and for reaching out to them. Ms. Rose Mensah (Kyeiwaa) assisted Rev. Harry Dumfeh and his wife Rev. Mrs. Bertha Dumfeh to dish out meals to the residents.

So when you see the impact that mobile has today in enabling financial inclusion and enabling consumers to have access to financial services you realize this is also an indication that technology is going to continue to play an increasing role in the remittance industry in Africa. The way we embrace technology is evidenced through some of the important milestones accomplished in Africa. For instance, in selected countries today you can receive money directly from your electronic device or mobile wallet. One has the option to choose whether to go to a location to pick up their cash or have the funds deposited into their electronic or mobile wallet, we also do that with regualr bank accounts. We now have the capability to draw funds from 50 million accounts in Nigeria, for example a customer that owns an account that wants to collect funds without going to a location can collect from a platform and pull funds directly to accounts. This fuction is going to develop further as most of the industry regulators are pushing to have financial inclusion that have come through new technologies and digital platforms.
Afrikan Post Newspaper had the opportunity of interacting with Aida Diarra; Vice President of Western Union (WU), a leader in global payment services as it celebrates 20 years of business with Africa.

At a meeting in WU's Washington DC offices in the USA, Aida gave a thorough insight into WU Operations in Africa as she spoke to George Bright-Abu of Afrikan Post and Oral Ofori of TheAfricanDream.net; respective news organizations targeting African audiences on the US.
In terms of total flows: the varying numbers depend on the respective organizations monitoring the industry, it is believed that there is as much as $60B US sent to Africa through WU, but again it varies from different sources.
Q: You have been with Western Union since 1999; starting as Assistant Marketing Manager in charge of US Outbound to Africa operations, give us a background to your rise up the ranks to where you are today?
A: The way I would like to look at remittance is more from the aspect of the impact on a given country. In some 15 countries in Africa, the remittance flow contributes to more than 10 percent of their GDP so that is how impactful it is. We therefore make sure we offer relevant services in every single country we serve, making sure we offer better options to consumers by enabling them to receive and send transactions as much as possible and with optimum flexibility.
Below is the Question (Q) and Answer (A) session that transpired:
A: I look at my career as the fantastic opportunity that it is which allowed me to be on both sides of the transactions when it comes to sending and receiving money to and from Africa. So I was fortunate to be in charge of our operations from the US servicing the African corridors. A few years later I decided to join our team in Africa because that is where everything is happening. I was assigned the marketing responsibility for all Africa and my role evolved into a regional role which I ended up with me being in that role for Africa.
Q: Where in Africa are you currently based?
A: We are based in Morocco; the headquarters for Africa though we also have regional offices - one in South Africa and the other one in Lagos Nigeria - on the continent.
Q: Your Decision to go to Africa might be borne out of your study of the demographics and the huge financial potential. Can you give us some insight into the financial aspects of your study?
A: What is important to know is that the financial flows in Africa is driven mainly due to the migration patterns of Africans, as you know Africans move a lot. It is believed that about 30 million Africans live outside of their countries of ori-

Q: So in this case are moneys collected in the local currency at the receiving end or in the currency of the sending country?
A: We respect the regulations in place for individual countries. If the regulator allows to be paid in hard currency we provide the option, if the regulator however has clear mandate and directions that the payments should take place in local currency then we abide by such regulation.
Q: Do you use the National bank rates or you set your own exchange rates?
A: It is critical to know that as we operate in any given country we do that within the guidelines of that country, so typically there are clear guidelines in terms of what rates can be applied and what flexibility operators have within that framework. Here at WU we are very keen on making sure that whatever rates we apply is in line with the guidelines. Nigeria for example is a place where the regulator indicates clearly the rates to be applied by all the industry players, in a case like this we of course have no option but to comply.
Q: You might be Aware that Nigeria has the biggest economy in West Africa. You mentioned that you have an office in Nigeria, so how are you impacting its economy?
Q: We all know Western union as being involved in A: The size of remittance for Nigeria is estimated at about $21B US sending and receiving money. Are there any other so of course as a key player we play a role in channeling these activities you are involved in that impact Africa?
A: We are certainly involved in sending and receiving money but I believe I would like people to relate to us more in terms as a company specializing in payments services. One of the things that we do is serving of small and medium scale businesses (SME’s) through our business solutions entity where we also enable consumer-tobusiness and business-to-consumer payments. This is probably more relevant to markets in areas like the UK and some countries in Europe but definitely an opportunity for Africa moving forward.
Q: How are you embracing emerging technologies with yout work in Africa?
A: You know you will be amazed by our capability in Africa to adopt to new technology. When you look at the total numbers of small wallet that exist in the world it
inflows into the country. When you do a ratio of the right size of the remittance compared to the GDP it is the equivalent of about 6%. You know the remittance industry contributes to 6% of the GDP of Nigeria so we believe that it is sizeable and significant and that we as a key player should continue to enable and make it easier for Nigerians to send and to receive money. One of the very interesting things is the fact that in 2015 the regulator allowed outdoor remittance within certain guidance, that was a rather phenomenal development enabling our customers to send money out of Nigeria. Parents were able to send money to their children in school. Looking at Nigeria as an important migration platform, this enables migrants there to send money back to their families in the neighboring countries. There are other interesting developments and which make us want to make sure we continue to serve the African Consumer in the most efficient manner.
Q: In the midst of Competition for Business in Nigeria with several money transfer companies, can you give us one reason Continued on Page 10

If so, then we are off to a great start! There is a song that we used to sing at church. It goes like this: “You’ve got to move, you’ve got to move, you’ve got to move, you’ve got to move, when The Lord gets ready, you’ve got to move, move, move, move, move!” See the emphasis is on the part about you moving. It appears while God has created us and we know that He holds all power in His hand; the power to move, the decision to move, to walk, talk, act, go for it, is in our hands. It is what He has given us; it is an empowerment of agency that He has invested in us. Thus, He depends on us to be willing to move, to be accepting and open to His direction for our lives. If He is ready and we choose not to move, we choose not to enact the motions that are called for in order to make certain realities happen, then we are simply refusing to be used, and even worse, denying ourselves of the heights He wants to take us and the blessings that come with it. I remember the Apostle Peter when he was weak and cowardly. I remember him when he was despondent and lost. He had passion (recall the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane when he cut of the ear of the soldier); and he had some faith, believing that Jesus is the son of God, stating “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16: 16). And declaring that he will always stand with Jesus, he vows, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (Matt 26:36) However, when Christ was captured, and Peter was confronted that he was a disciple of Christ, well, you know the story. Peter denied Jesus not once, not twice, but thrice. And when He believed that because Jesus had been crucified and therefore the ministry was lost, Peter abandoned his three-year purpose and ministry with Jesus and went back to fishing. But this same Peter transformed in will and purpose. When Christ reappeared to the disciples and directed them to go and wait upon the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, Peter obeyed; Peter moved. And you know the rest. On the day of Pentecost, it was Peter, who, no longer a coward, but filled with not just passion but the Holy Spirit of God, moved and spoke boldly to the masses despite any consequence he might face. Scripture tells us in Acts chapter 2 that after Peter had spoken, “they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” Acts 2: 37-38. This is Peter, once the reluctant apostle, moving. This is Peter walking in His ministry. This is Peter giving himself up to be used to great
heights, where he leads the disciples to convert three thousand people in one day! (Acts 2: 41) Sometimes we are like the former Peter. We believe, but we don’t act. We trust, but we just sit. And other times, we have just simply given up and go about doing our own thing. Yet, there is a calling on our lives. There is a purpose for us, and somehow something or someone has sapped all the joy, energy, desire and will out of our system and we sit defeated, just bearing time. But Christ calls us to awake. He wants us to tune in to Him and be in agreement to move and make a change in our lives. Our Maker wants us to be useful to Him and impactful in this world. Peter decided to get serious. He decided to commit and he was determined to move and that decision made all the difference in his life and his eventual story. Shall we be like the transformed Peter? “Me? What can I do? How can I save Israel? I am the least in my family.” (Judges 6:15) These are the words of Gideon, a man who before his transformation, thought very little of himself and simply existed rather than act and make a difference in his life and those of others. But Gideon, much like Peter, would become transformed and become a great man in the hands of God. Interestingly, God sees us as mighty warriors, life changers, movers and shakers in the kingdom of God, not to mention our own physical world. But too often, we do not see ourselves in the same light as our Creator sees us. Why is that? Is it because we don’t have a sense of our worth? That we don’t know or have forgotten that we were made in His image? (Genesis 1:26) That we “can do all things through Christ who strengthens us?” (Philippians 4:13) Difficult and even impossible situations can render us impotent and ineffective. But when the angel of the Lord looked upon Gideon, he didn’t see an impotent or ineffective man. He didn’t see the least in a family, church, work place or community. He saw a mighty warrior. We must understand that God’s desire is to use us to effect change, to make a difference, to accomplish something and some things. He can use anyone of us regardless of our sex, ethnicity, education and class. The angel of the Lord appeared to none other than Gideon and told him to save Israel out of the hands of their oppressors, the Medianites. While he doubted his ability, Gideon believed enough in the angel and obeyed. Gideon’s obedience, his decision to act, to move when the angel instructed him to move, is what alters him from a doubtful, low self-esteem person into a mighty warrior. Gideon, the nobody, obeyed the angel when he instructed him to “tear down his father’s altar to Baal, a god that the Israelites had turned to worship, and to build a proper one for Jehovah, Lord of Israel. Although Gideon was fearful, he still moved and performed the duties requested of him. He becomes a leader of his people and leads them against their enemies. Gideon becomes confident when his faith in God increases and when he sees that the people trust in his leadership and calling. He fearlessly and powerfully leads them to charge against their enemies instructing his small army, “’Watch me, follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘for the Lord and for Gideon.’” (Judges 7:17) They did just that and the Lord magnified Himself by using Gideon and demolishing their enemies! Gideon delivers Israel from their oppressors. He becomes such a fearless warrior and leader that the Israelites wanted him and his male heirs to rule them, but he says to them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.” (Judges 8:23) Because Gideon moved, because he obeyed the voice of God and aligned his will with God’s will, God used him mightily and scripture tells us that Israel’s enemy Midian “was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace for forty years.” (Judges 8:28) Who did this? God and Gideon did this. God the Creator, the all-powerful Deity, desires to use

you and cause you to be a blessing not only to yourself but to others. Will you respond to Him? Will you give up on your idleness, your comfort zone, your doubts, your pride and whatever is holding you back to allow Him to make you a great instrument? Or will you simply sit and while away the time, having no significant effect whatsoever with your life? Keep in mind that if you do not respond to Him, if you do not allow Him to take you on the journey that He meant for you to take, then you are not living your purpose and not fulfilling the intended goals spoken on your life. The angel of the Lord spoke unto Gideon’s life and told him that he was a warrior. Gideon, although doubtful in the beginning, decided to act and a warrior he became.
Allow me to repeat that we are more than conquerors through Christ our Lord (Romans 8:37). Allow me again to say that the Bible tells us we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil 4:13). Finally, let me end with the incident of the fig tree in Mathew 21. In this chapter, we see that Jesus goes to the temple and “cleans house.” Upon His arrival in Jerusalem, He goes to the temple and what He saw made Him angry. He saw that the temple had become a market place rather than a revered house of worship. In His rejection of what His creation had turned His house into, “He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,” and said, “’It is written, ‘my house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” (12) Immediately after this, He healed the blind and lame. Not long after, we see that He approaches a fig tree. Scripture tells us that it was early morning and Jesus was hungry and wanted something to eat. But when He went to the fig tree, He saw that there was no fruit on it, only leaves. And He spoke to the tree, “’May you never bear fruit again.’ Immediately, the tree withered.” (19) This chapter teaches us two things about Christ our Lord. He is a loving and caring God, but He is also a God of judgement. We see here that Christ does not tolerate the misappropriation of His property whether it is the temple or the tree. He requires that everything serves its purpose to His benefit and glory. Clearly that the temple was being misappropriated is not in His will nor to His glory. Furthermore, that the fig tree, a creation of His, fails to bear fruit, to perform its only purpose, is unacceptable to Him so much so that He curses it. One might say this is harsh, but what is the Creator to do with His own creation? As humans created in His image and even as His Spirit is breathed into us, we are surely more valuable than the tree. But the truth remains that the Master not only desires but also requires us to be fruitful, to be purposeful, to be productive and be useful in His kingdom even as Peter and Gideon were. The truth is that there are consequences when we do not move, when we do not act. Recall the parable of the talents and how one who refused to make any use of his talent was severely punished (Matt 25: 1430/ Luke 19:12-28). Consequently, let us remember that we have a responsibility as creations of God and even more importantly, as sons and daughters of The Most High. So, let us be determined to move. Let us agree to be profitable instruments in the hands of God. And as we get up to move in this year, as we rise and begin to walk in our purpose and objectives, we rise in the kingdom of God.

A Namibian Grade 12 learner Simon Petrus is making waves after he invented a mobile phone, with no sim-card, which uses radio signals and doesn’t require airtime to make calls. A Namibian Grade 12 learner Simon Petrus is making waves after he invented a mobile phone, which uses radio signals and doesn’t require airtime to make calls.
According to New Era, Petrus, who is a learner at Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School, made the phone using parts from a telephone and television set, and his invention doesn’t even need a sim-card to make calls.
The mobile device took the whiz kid two years to complete, and it has not been plain sailing for the young inventor, who faced financial difficulties. The project was funded by Petrus’ unemployed parents, who had to sacrifice over N$2 000 (U.S$ 146) to ensure that his project would be completed successfully.
The invention, which is made up of a radio system, is attached to a box and makes voice calls, while also doubling up as a TV, allowing the user to watch one TV channel. Petrus’ invention is not a fly-by-night success story. Last year the learner won a gold medal at the NamPower national schools’ competition, after he reportedly invented a machine that serves as a seed drier and cooler. Petrus’ invention continues to cause a stir on social media, where the development is being celebrated as a remarkable example of the innovative nature and potential of young people on the continent, which needs to be supported.
Over the past few years, Namibia has been the birthplace of various innovative projects by young people.
Last year, another Namibian student, Gerson Mangundu, developed the country’s own social network site called Namhook.
In 2014, another young inventor from northern Namibia, Josua Nghaamwa built a satellite dish booster using scrap material to enhance internet connectivity, to benefit those living in the rural areas where the signal is significantly weaker than normal.

ACRC Plans To Open A State-Of-The-Art Resource Center
Four years ago, a plan for an African Community Resource Center was announced. The project got put on hold and refined. Those plans aggressively have taken shape in the course of the past year. Plans of a stateof-the-art center was unveiled on November 5th, 2016 after some delays, but date for ground break and construction continues to be the goal in 2017, according to the organization’s president Mr. Dennis L. Bioh
The architectural plan for the multifunctional center consists of a reception services area, a conference room, bookshop, a bar and restaurant, and a theater auditorium. The building will also feature a gym with changing rooms and facilities, a game room, a library, and offices. Other features will include a 25-student classroom, an innovative technological lab, a museum and a host of other amenities. Mr. Bioh emphasized that the biggest thing about the new facility will be the organization of the community. “This is the key – togetherness,” said Mr. Bioh. With 300 parking spots, efficient bus drop off pick up, plenty of natural light, a teardrop-shaped, double skin enveloping the entire structure spread over three levels, characterized by soft flowing curves, transparencies, and lighting effects, the new facility will doubtless be in high demand for DC metro area.
Despite a population of over 20 million people, the DC metro area does not have an organization and facility that have an overabundance of amenities and programs that are capable serving the needs of all. The organization is reportedly close securing founding thanks to the success of its campaign, and has been undertaking a massive capital improvement program over the past several months; other Financing for the projects and activities is obtained through contributions from the CEO, individuals and organizations supporting this non-profit effort via its website.

Joseph Kwame Nti had a call to church planting in the late 1980s when, as a very young man serving (as the youth pastor) in the youth ministry of New Tafo Baptist, his home church in Ghana, West Africa. The then resident Pastor, Rev. J. S. Mensah recognized the call God on his life and took him under his tutelage and with the church EC detailed a handful of young men from the church to embark on satellite church planting outreaches with the church planting committee in nearby towns and villages like Old Tafo, Mamponteng, Asokore-Mampong, to name a few. Joseph was assigned to lead the Mamponteng church plant team which thrived very well.
He realized very early how highly-motivated, personable, service-driven and gifted he was for church planting and missions in general. During his active years at his home church several churches were planted and he was very actively involved with about six of them. Secondly, he experienced church planting with the House of Faith Ministries’ School of the Word Bible School in Kumasi Ghana. He attended the school from 1990 – 1991 during which years a lot of church planting assignments were engaged. Students were trained and organized in teams to embark on these projects beginning from Assin Foso, Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana, through Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. He also had the privilege of being on a team in particular that did church planting in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. In 1992 at age 21, while still a student at the Ghana Baptist Seminary at Abuakwa, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, young Joseph was assigned a church plant project in the township. It was more of a cell group with a handful of young men and women from the Abuakwa township who were organized for a church plant which successfully still stands by the grace of God.
Besides these, he has been involved in church planting with Trinity Baptist Church in London, England, Inspirational Charismatic Church, North London, Bethel Prayer Ministry International in Hamburg, Germany and Christ for All Nations Evangelistic Ministries in Dortmund, Germany. Joseph has served in many ministerial capacities; from praise worship leader, Sunday school teacher, youth pastor, traveling evangelist with a cutting edge ministry to the nations of Africa, Europe, and North America spanning 25 years. Since his being here in the United States, Joseph has been involved in church planting campaigns in the Bronx-New York, Inspirational Gospel Assembly (2003), House Of Faith Ministries New Jersey USA Inc., (2003-2004), Alexandria Miracle Church in Alexandria, Virginia (2005), Word and Spirit Baptist Church in Woodbridge, Virginia (2008), Favor House Ministries (2010-Current).Joseph Kwame Nti graduated from the Ghana Baptist Theological Seminary in 1991, and is currently pursuing a Masters' program in Theological Studies at the National Bible College and Seminary at Fort Washington, MD. Akon Helps Raise $1 Billion For Africa

Popular African American singer Akon has announced that he has raised about 1 billion dollars to finance projects in Africa.
Speaking to the press the artist said it was not an easy task for him raising the first billion dollar.
He went further to say that Africa is in dire need of basic neccesities like portable water and electricity.
Akon says his desire for luxury reduced when he noticed the poor development in Africa.
In 2015, the R and B hip hop recording artist, Aliaune Damala Bouga, popularly known on stage as Akon, launched a mega-solar project aimed at providing electricity to some 600 million Africans.
The initiative primarily targets rural communities that are not connected to the electricity and also seeks to find ways to bring costs down to make power supply more affordable.

DR Congo: Kabila Is Yet To Sign Deal To End His Rule January 2017

A deal has been signed to end Joseph Kabila's 15-year rule in the Democratic Republic of Congo - but the president himself has yet to add his signature. Senior ministers backed the deal, which would see Mr Kabila stay on until elections are held by the end of 2017.
The country has faced a crisis since Mr Kabila failed to step down earlier in December, when his mandate expired.
Elections should have been held in November, and dozens of people have died in protests since then.
After the electoral commission cancelled the scheduled vote, citing logistical and financial difficulties in organising them, Mr Kabila formed a 74-member transitional government and said elections would be held in 2018. Representatives of Mr Kabila and his long standing rival Etienne Tshisekedi have been locked in negotiations brokered by Catholic Church leaders since 8 December.
Neither man has yet signed the final deal, but representatives of both sides said the two men would put their names to the transition agreement later. In the meantime, members of the government and the opposition signed it in the final minutes of 2016. "Today, we are happy to head up a political compromise," said Archbishop Marcel Utembi, who heads the church body which mediated the talks. Under the deal, Mr Kabila is to lead a transitional government until elections which must be held by the end of 2017.
During that period, an opposition politician will serve as prime minister. The document states that Mr Kabila will not seek a third term. The constitution bars him from doing this, but the opposition had feared he might try to amend it to enable him to do.
Archbishop Marcel Utembi sees further challenges ahead. "It's one thing to have a political compromise but putting it into place is another," he said, after the signing ceremony on Saturday. DR Congo has not had a smooth transfer of power between any leaders since independence from Belgium in 1960.
Mr Kabila took over in 2001 following the assassination of his father Laurent Kabila.

Africa’s flagship football tournament the African Cup of Nations takes place in Gabon next January.
The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, known as the Total Africa Cup of Nations, Gabon 2017 (also referred to as AFCON 2017 or CAN 2017) is scheduled to be the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the biennial international men's football championship of Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The tournament was scheduled to be hosted by Libya until CAF rescinded its hosting rights in August 2014 due to ongoing war in the country. The tournament will instead be hosted by Gabon.

I believe it has to do with leveraging the new technology we have while continuing to remain compliant with all the different regulations that we have to abide by. Sometimes the regulations in place do not cover technology goals faster than what the regulation have in place so one has to be extremely careful as we embrace these new opportunities. Also, Infrastructure - as you want to expand locations and even touch points, we are all aware of the power shortages that we have. For example if a bank wants to open a location up country, one has to take into consideration the need to ensure ongoing power supply, ongoing connectivity, and these are realities to take into account as we develop the service offering . But the continent is moving at a very fast pace. These issues are the priorities of many governments and organizations throughout the continent and we are really very optimistic about our ability to capitalize on new technology to diversity our options for consumers but it is critical to know that there are so many support functions behind the scenes to ensure that the operations are ongoing ,that the transaction process is flawless ,that we have the right compliance, that it will be limiting the true number of people servicing the region to make sure that we offer the best alternative option out there .
Which Areas in Africa Has Western Union Not Covered Yet?
One of the biggest opportunities that we will focus our efforts on has to do with the small businesses . They are also underserved when it comes to financial options available to them and we at Western Union have the capability through our Western Union Business Solutions group that I believe that this is one opportunity that we will continue to explore moving forward . In Africa, I believe we are pretty much everywhere except in Somalia and again this is due to the availability of networks, but we opened Swaziland last year and we are very proud of the footprint that we have in the region today.

Nigeria Rice 'contaminated, Not Plastic' - NAFDAC
Lab tests on a consignment of rice seized by Nigerian customs officials show that the product is "contaminated" but not plastic, the National Agency For Food and Drugs (Nafdac) says. The rice contained bacteria "above permissible limits", a senior Nafdac official said. Customs officials' claims that the rice seized in Lagos last week was "plastic" sparked confusion and official denials. The health minister intervened, saying there was "no evidence" for the claims. Tests on samples of the rice showed that it was "unwholesome for human consumption", exceeding the maximum limit for bacteria including "Coli form", Nafdac said in a statement. The Nigerian customs service, speaking at the same press conference, said that it had acted on "credible intelligence" that "large consignments of plasticized rice were.... to be shipped from the Far East to Africa". Regardless of the outcome of the lab tests, intelligence still indicated that "several metric tonnes of expired and dangerous rice are still lying in wait at warehouses in neighbouring countries", with the Nigerian market the ultimate destination, customs chief Ibrahim Ali told media. Mali Sends Back France Deportees
Mali has sent back two people who were deported from France on the same planes they arrived on, questioning whether they were even Malian citizens. The pair were flown to Bamako using European travel permits or "laissez-passer", not passports or other Malian papers, the government said. The government said it could not accept people "simply assumed to be Malian". Recent reports of a deal with the EU to repatriate failed Malian asylum seekers have sparked protests.
In a statement, the Malian government condemned the use of the European "laissez-passez" in cases of expulsion, describing it as "against international conventions". It also warned airlines not to let people using the document fly to Mali. The French authorities have not yet commented. Mali's refusal to admit the two migrants comes as Bamako is under fire at home for having signed a ''migrant return agreement'' with the European Union. Many Malians claim the government has betrayed them by accepting â‚Ź145m ($153m; ÂŁ124m) for ''measures to deter migration''. The deal, announced on 11 December, was the first of its kind between the EU and an African country. The Malian anti-corruption group "mains propres'' (clean hands) says the authorities in Bamako were tricked by Brussels, whose own rules require such an agreement before mass expulsions can be triggered..
Bamako and Brussels are now both playing the deal down as ''an agreement with a small A'' or ''a communique on deepening migration partnership''. The EU has since signed a similar document with Niger, which is another major departure country for migrants heading through the Sahara desert on their way to Europe. There is a large Malian community in France, the former colonial power, who support their relatives back home by sending money. More than 360,000 people have reached Europe by crossing the Mediterranean this year. Self-Taught Nigerian Artist, Oscar Ukonu, Draws Impossibly Realistic Portraits Using Only A Pen
Oscar Ukonu is a brilliant self-taught Nigerian artist, who uses only a pen to create stunning photorealistic portraits that take him an average of 100 to 120 hours to complete. Before Oscar gets started on one of his portraits, he studies his subjects face for about two days to “connect with their personality” – and with such brilliant outcomes, who can argue with his methods?
Oscar started drawing when he was nine years old but only landed his first commissioned piece three years ago. It’s been uphill from there though, with over 12,000 followers on Instagram and successful exhibitions around Lagos, Oscar’s work seems to only be getting better (and more appreciated).
Oscar, who only started drawing with pens two years ago, says he didn’t start using the medium to achieve any sort of acclaim, but that the “steady ballpoint feature” gave him more control than any other tool – including the graphite pencils he started off with. Jonathan Mensah: Ghana Defender Joins MLS side Crew SC "We look forward to him making an immediate impact," head coach Gregg Berhalter told the Crew SC website.
"With Jonathan's vast playing experience and strong character we believe he will fit into our club nicely.
"Jonathan is a physically dominant central defender who at a young age has already proven himself on the world's biggest stage."

Prince Harry feels "complete relaxation and normality" in Africa. The 32-year-old royal - who is the son of the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles - has revealed he feels most like himself than he does "anywhere else in the world" when he visits the continent. Speaking in the February issue of Town and Country magazine, the flame-haired hunk said: "This is where I feel more like myself than anywhere else in the world.

Gombe United defender Uzama Douglas was shot dead in Benin City by armed men believed to be cultists on Thursday December 29, 2016
The murder of Uzama is the second tragedy to hit the domestic football scene in the last three months after Shooting Stars central defender Izu Joseph was shot dead.
A close friend of the former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles invitee said that the left back was shot in Benin City and declared dead on arrival in hospital.
“He was still on break in Benin City and was yet to resume for the new season,” the friend said
“He went out with friends when some cult boys carried out an attack against them. He was shot and that was it.
“The killers fled and left my friend in cold blood.”
A top official at Gombe United said the club was shocked by the death of the player.
“The Gombe United family has learned with sadness of the untimely death of our defender Uzama Douglas,” he said. “This is a sad loss to Uzama’s family, Gombe United and the nation.”

On this occasion, the church held a four-day Christmas Convention from December 22nd - 25th which brought Church of Pentecost members from the regional grouping territory together. The ushers and the church leadership had a hectic time to bring in extra chairs to accommodate the congregation. Upgrading, Downgrading or Simply Just SELLING YOUR HOME?
Dear readers, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for following and reading my articles. I take this opportunity to welcome you into the year 2017 and wish you the very best this year; a year full of extraordinary blessings. As most of you know, this forum allows me to share a wealth of information or resources with you concerning real estate. Since it is the beginning of the year, I feel compelled to ink something different that speaks to the heart of so many when a new year approaches. That’s New Year Resolution(s). The question then become, do we resolute or revolute when a New Year approaches. The Oxford Dictionary defines Resolution as “a firm decision to do or not to do something, whilst a Revolution is a forcible overthrow of something in favor of a new system.” I prefer and recommend the later. This is a year of Revolution. Typically, when a new year reigns in, we make promises to ourselves as to what we “should" do, or what we should stop doing or what other people suggest we should work on. The focus should rather be what YOU really want to do or actually what YOU want to achieve. Is not about anybody else, but YOU. To be successful in executing the new changes you want to make for the New Year, it requires a lot of commitment and motivating yourself. Here are some simple techniques to implement to make the goals a reality. Rule 1: Commit to Your Revolution Choose revolutions that you really want to achieve – and make them positive. The goal should be simply REASONABLE—a very small goal to easily attain. Announce your revolution to everyone around you – they
will help hold you accountable. • Ask yourself; is this revolution my idea or someone else's? Does this revolution motivate and invigorate me? • Does this revolution sit comfortably with other factors in your life, such as my values and long-term plans? Rule 2: Be Realistic This simply implies that; making sure the goal is in small increments, so that you can definitely attain it. Do not revolute to do something too big and probably out of reach. It can overkill the purpose and mission you’ve set your path on. Rule 3: Make the Revolution Stick This means reciting your revolution to yourself, meditating on it and finding ways to make it work daily. Last but not the least, the most common revolution for most people are to improve health and finances. If you plan on a quality health life, it starts by making small changes in portions of intakes. It is not recommended to do a drastic change, do it slowly in small portions day by day. If you plan on financial health it is also highly recommended you take steps to review your monthly bills such as Cable, Cell phone, Insurance, etc…. Take time to shop around and compare what competitors in the market are offering to save you money. Making these changes would position you to experience a revolution this year 2017. You will definitely see a difference. Here is a quote to think of: January 1 signifies a new beginning. However, each day allows for a new beginning, and hence it is a reset. Africa will go through six human actions this year it will stand, kneel, squat, bow, fall and then rise again. Here's how. Standing (Trump, Ghana, Ethiopia) In the group of those who will be standing in Africa in 2017 is Donald Trump. Yes, I know it's an act of treason to associate him with Africa. But when he's sworn in as president, his foreign policy (or tweetplomacy) will have a bearing on our continent. His critics warn that his isolationist stand might mean less attention will be paid to Africa. But it could just force Africans to find solutions from within, by strengthening our institutions, improving infrastructure, governance and security and trading more amongst ourselves. Another man who also takes office in January is Nana Akufo-Addo, the president-elect of Ghana. Many young Congolese are hoping President Kabila will go without a fight Although Jose Eduardo dos Santos has announced he'll step down, his blood will still flow through the veins of power and the economy in Angola. His daughter, Isabel, heads Sonangol, the state oil company and is considered by Forbes to be Africa's richest woman, while his son, Jose, is chairman of the country's sovereign wealth fund, Fundo Soberano de Angola. In neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, 2017 could mark the beginning of the end for another family dynasty, which started in 1997 when Laurent Desire Kabila became president after overthrowing Mobutu Sese Seko. Laurent Kabila's son Joseph picked up the reigns after his father's assassination in 2001, and was bent on staying in power until attempts to change the constitution to allow him a third term backfired. Violent street protests have piled pressure on President Kabila to exit from office this year and the issue is bound to continue into the new year. Falling - Fees, presidents and skirts The theme of falling is alive in South Africa. Uganda's last appearance in the finals was in 1978 when it lost to Ghana in the final. Reason For the West Africa Focus
The Center For Cosmetic Surgery Ghana (CCSG) was set up in 2006 as a for-profit entity in Ghana by Dr. Kwasi A. Debra and his associates. Based on needs seen by Dr. Debra from patients that need cosmetic surgery treatment devoid of vanity, he has seriously been considering the establishment of a West Africa Nonprofit Cosmetic Surgery Unit for breast cancer survivors.
The long-term goal of CCSG and Aesthetic Laser and Vein Center; Dr. Debra’s Bowie Maryland practice in the USA, is to enhance the nonprofit hub idea such that more people across the west African sub-region come to benefit from it. Partners and potential sponsors have begun working together to make the West Africa Nonprofit Cosmetic Surgery Unit (WANCSU) a possibility by the close of 2025.
Dr. Debra, a US based Ghanaian cosmetic surgeon born November 24, 1957, identified some of these non-vanity treatment categories in an interview with TheAfricanDream.net — during a meet up late 2016 in Washington, DC, — as being needed mostly by women.

“Based on my years of experience from working in Ghana on women coming from across various West African countries to the CCSG, I have been able to identify some of these needs to be in the forms of breast reconstruction and cosmetic procedures for people who have had breast cancer and have received treatment” Dr. Debra said.
The cosmetic surgeon went on to say that “...some of these women after receiving breast cancer treatment might have prosthesis fitted to create the appearance of an actual breast. Eventually, some of them though need extensive surgery that might seem reconstructive with certain cosmetic components involved.”
“It is for situations like these that make me want to invest in setting up the WANCSU nonprofit unit where we can get potential sponsors to help us assist people that need cosmetic surgery related treatment that is not vanity but more humanitarian oriented,” the surgeon told TheAfricanDreams.net

The daughter of Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has reportedly taken control of the country’s largest bank Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA).
The controlling stake was bought from a Portuguese bank by Angola’s largest phone operator Unitel which is run by Ms dos Santos.
Isabel dos Santos already heads the Southern African nation’s oil firm Sonagol, and is said to be the richest woman on the continent.
Forbes magazine reports that she had nearly 19% of Banco BPI shares, Portugals’s fourth-largest bank.
