African from Down Under
Yes, Australia is a land of opportunity but as I was reminded Australia doesn’t owe me a living., a job, a dream house or a flash car. Its not about where you come from, its not about your history, its not about the colour of your skin, Its all about THE MINDSET AND PRIORITIES. I have the privileged opportunity of meeting African Australians at the highest echelons in Australian society, from Corporate to Small business, Government to Academia and it’s intriguing how different the mindset is. Eve Howell, Woodside Petroleum Vice President HSS&S, noted being an African Australian is actually an advantage; it opens doors and opportunities – wow! how about that for mindset. As the last wave of new migrants, I believe there is something special about us, our capacity to succeed is tested and proven by the very will and determination that brought us to our new home. We have the power to brand who the African Australian is – progressive, modern, educated, engaged, astute and a celebrated citizen of this continent.

The Feel Good Issue When the majority are escaping our wet and windy Australian winter to where the sun shines and temperatures are high, we stay here to review the most interesting events that took place this winter to have an impact on our Afro-Aussies to make you feel good. Miss Africa 2011, African Professional’s of Australia Awards, Africa Day celebrations plus countless events taking place in Africa as this issue goes to print, all of this undoubtedly shows that there is a lot to feel good about and be proud of. This is also the perfect time for us to catch up with some amazing people, such as Tommy Adebayo, Chairman and Founder of the APAAU and Shelagh Magadza, one of Australia’s top women in arts industry, for a cup of coffee and chat about the opportunities they found in Australia and about the qualities that make Afro-Aussies great contributors to Australian multicultural society. Of course, we didn’t stop there. A little bit of fashion flash (these pieces are not for your wardrobe, they are better suited for an art gallery), virtual journey around Africa (after all, it is holiday season), music interviews, small obsessions for your wish list (one day it will all be yours!) and easy entertainment are all in this issue. How does this feel?

Guest Lounge:
Couched with Imat Akelo-Opiro Abena Wright | NSW
Afriqan Times Magazine caught up with Imat Opiro Founder and Director of Otino-International, an actress and a Senior International Drug Monitor. Surely a woman of many facets to chat about the recently launched Otino-International and what she hope to achieve. AQT: What projects are you are involved in? A: Currently (as of this year) I have just completed a small feature on the Channel 7 TV series Winners and Losers that will air this season. I am also currently working on a play that has never been performed before and due to confidentiality reasons I cannot name the play however this will be showing later this Year in September. In relation to Otino-International, we are a medical non-profit that aims to provide medicine to the returned innocents of war torn nations. We are currently beginning in Northern Uganda with the focus on immunization to the innocents in rural areas that do not have access to hospitals or medical facilities, due to the LRA having raised their ancestral homes and all infrastructure to the ground. Please join us on facebook as per the link at the end of the interview and we will be online soon! However earlier this year Otino had a benefit called “The Last Frontier Benefit” of which 100% funds raised were donated to the Queensland Flood and Cyclone victims. The evening was based on 100% African Urban and World Music Performers giving back to our brothers and sisters in this land that we all call home. The evening was named “Music for Humanity” and was an amazing success with world class acts: Culture Connect, Barawato (Ousmane), Zulu, Victory, Urban Empire and DJ NukC. AQT: Have you got anything in the pipeline? A: Yes, God is more than good. I have been invited to Europe by the President of the EOAWO (Empowerment of African Women Organization). The EOAWO is an International organization that stems from Europe that are advocates providing help and generating awareness to the causes of Gender Inequality. In particular, violence against women and children in DRC. Further to this the EOAWO also is working in the EU to help turn around lives of young women caught up in the slavery of human trafficking (specifically prostitution) who were brought from Africa to the EU. This invitation is extremely humbling and I look forward to playing an integral role as an Otino International partner in conjunction with EOAWO later this year. AQT: What would you advice fellow afro aussie women? A: Know who you are! Spend time with yourself (as in your soul). Be confident in who you are as a unique and beautiful daughter of Eve and do not be alarmed/distracted, because when you start following your dreams because there will be stiff opposition. Just keep on moving and have faith, joy, love and stay focused and you will achieve!
AQT: What inspired you to do what you are doing? A: I believe that we are given a purpose to fulfill during our lifetime. My inspiration was no more than enjoying having a passion for the arts, feeling comfortable in my own skin and empowering others wherever and whenever I can especially through the arts. In addition the current source of my inspiration that keeps me going right now, is the need for me bring forth Imat , un-exampled, visionary and empowerment role model that inspires all peoples around the globe. My inspiration is paving the way as Imat and doing what no –one else can and sharing this gift empowerment to all peoples so that they go farther than imagined and do what only they are purposed to do with their own unique ability. In short my inspiration is that “The message is far greater than I”. AQT: Who is your role model? A: My role models include both my grandmothers and my mother. Each one is so strong and vision oriented that were it not for them going through being jailed for selling local brew to send my mother to school or standing up against men folk during a male dominated era to ensure that my mother was given an education, or for my Mother for studying to tertiary level in life and becoming a global leader and world changer then I would not be where I am today. We are all a product of the pyramid – i.e. we all stand on the backs of the ones who went before us and paved the way for us in order to reach the stars and beyond. Their dreams were for us to live out our dreams and they had a generational vision and wisdom that was so strong that even if they did not see the Promised Land for themselves they made sure that my sisters and I did as women. Yet I must also say in terms of men, my Father. I have learnt a lot from his demeanor and his actions that I didn’t understand as a child but now I have begun to understand, what it means to be a protector, a provider and wise decision maker. AQT: Thank you A: I would like to thank Afriqan Times for giving me this amazing opportunity to share my journey travelled thus far. I am extremely humbled and grateful. As always, Peace love and May continue to Bless You as you bless others through your media. Laying the Foundation for African Australian professionals
Tommy Adebayo - Chairman and Founder of the APAAU
AUGUST 2011 | AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE  13
African & Distinguished
A
QT met up with Tommy Adebayo, a distinguished African Australian making us proud. He shared with us his journey and experiences that lead him to earn a livelihood and find his place in the Australian community. He talked about the pursuit of his destiny. And last but not the least; we will talk about the value that the African Australian community is adding to Australia and Africa. Born in the Yoruba tribe of South West in Nigeria, Tommy belonged to an above average middle class family. His father was a businessman and the feel of running a business was present within him and his siblings. As a youth Tommy had many daunting challenges to face while growing up in Nigeria but being driven by a strong passion to be a go-getter and to gain recognition from his equally talented peers he realized tart he needed to bring a sharp focus in pursuing what he believed in and was destined to do. As an inspiration he adored a Nigerian business Icon Mr. Abiola Kashimaw whom he still remembers for his astute words his words- “anybody that wants to succeed in life must be ready to sacrifice and pay for it; that every successful person must have a story to tell; only lazy people don’t have a story to tell”. From then on Tommy decided that he will have a story to tell every living day of his life; and rose to be a man of excellence and efficient in everything he does.
Tommy’s educational contorted one. He did his primary and secondary schooling in Nigeria, went on to pursue a 5-yr Bachelors in Electrical Engineering at University of Ilorin; He left his home country to South Africa and gained a diploma in Computer Studies for 1.5 yrs. Being pulled by the Information Technology boom he left his continent to Australia to pursue his Masters in Information Technology (2002-3). Most, like myself travelld from Africa to Australia dreaming of a land where things will be served on a golden platter. But reality sunk in and he realized that hard work was universal; he juggled work while studying and barely had time for entertainment. As if he hadn’t had enough challenges, upon completing his studies he found it very difficult finding work that matched his educational specialization. In spite of holding a Master’s degree Tommy starting working “odd” jobs to earn a living. He worked as kitchenhand, housekeeper, security guard and many others. It is through these jobs he learnt the value of simple hard work and how it eventually pays off. Just about the same time, Tommy realised that his true calling was not in the isolated work of a programmer, but in the fast paced, dynamic, unpredictable, challenging and team oriented environment of the Oil and Gas industry. This lead him to re-train and educate himself by pursuing two postgraduate degrees and finally landed him a job. He has since been working in the industry. Tommy has won various accolades such as IFAP/CGU Gold Safe way awards (2006-2010), and OMI Multicultural Community Service Award 2011. Tommy speaks very passionately about the Oil and Gas industry. 14 AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2011
He says that if you know what you want then you can definitely succeed in this industry. Prior to re-training and re-educating himself Tommy and his Indian room/classmate wondered if the cultural difference that existed was responsible for them not getting a job. It is a fear that most migrants hold deep within themselves. After speaking to successful Africans and non-natives Australians he came to understand his fear was a not real. He came to understand its about what you can offer and the value one brings to the table; what is it that gives one a competitive advantage above every other candidate? He also learnt that one needed to connect with people in the industry that one wants to get into. He did noted “I did as told by various mentors and followed the learning curves that finally lead me to a great job”. Over the last few years Tommy has created and nourished a NGO called African Professionals of Australia Inc. (APA). It is an organization that has grown from one to 450 members today. It was formed from the basic belief that there is no new secret and that success is a process. Through this platform Tommy wanted to share his own success story; and the success stories of many others. Through this community he is creating an instrument through which the African Australian community can get the acknowledgement that they crave for and truly deserve. Through this effort Tommy looks to create a pool of African Australians who could act as ambassadors and provide localized knowledge; adding value that would help the Australian government build a better business network in Africa. When asked about the people that have helped him most in his journey; he noted how his wife has been a constant source of emotional support and encouragement. He says that family support has been very important to him. He also acknowledges the help of notable organizations like the Western Australian Government office of multicultural interests, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Macquarie Private Wealth, Keystart Home loans and Country Housing, Realty One and individuals like the Consular for Mali, Uganda, Egypt, and Kenyan, Nigerian, and South Africa ambassadors.

A Heart of Art
A
heart of art is the best way to describe this month’s Phenomenal Woman. The arts have been embedded in her from her childhood days and today she is living out her heart’s content as one of Perth Australia’s top women involved in the Arts Industry. When I say heavily involved I mean Perth International Arts Festival and Commonwealth Festival Perth 2011 (to be staged alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)) heavily involved. Join me as I explore the arty heart of Shelagh Magadza. Shelagh as she says has a very eclectic background. Her mother is from New Zealand (NZ), where Shelagh was born and her father is Zimbabwean. They lived in NZ for a couple of years, moved to Zambia and then settled in Harare, Zimbabwe in the mid-seventies. She credits her parents for her passion for the arts . Her father is a scientist (Ecology and Environmentalism) and he used to take her on his expeditions. Her mother was a teacher and as a family they explored a lot of the history and art of the country.
AQT : What fond memories do you have of home Shelagh: Whilst I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, the travelling that we did as a family are some of my fondest memories. I saw different parts of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania. Lake Kariba has a very special place in my family’s hearts as we have driven around it, gone across it many times, and we know it well. Through this travel I have many memories of beautiful places, people and experiences.
Phenomenal Woman
Phenomenal Woman
AQT : How many years have you been in Australia and how did you come to be in Australia? Shelagh : I left Zimbabwe when I was twenty and I travelled around a bit. I went to Europe and then to NZ where I studied at Victoria University, ending up with a Masters in International Relations.. At that time I began to work in the arts industry. I worked for the NZ International Festival of the Arts and started travelling again to different parts of the world. In 2002 I came to Perth on a nine month contract to work for the Festival, and I have ended up staying nine years now. AQT: What was it like being the Director of the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) and currently the Director of the Commonwealth Festival Perth? Shelagh : I was the director for PIAF for four years. I had been in festivals for a long time and knew he industry well, but the position of Artistic Director did present a new challenge and a lot to learn about leadership. On the good side, the opportunity to travel both internationally and within Australia was a privilage and a chance to learn more about the history and cultures of this country.
The Commonwealth Festival is more project based but this has different stresses. CHOGM is a very important event for Perth – hosting up to 53 world leaders and a Royal visit means that many, many people across the city are currently involved in preparations. It is wonderful to be part of it but it also has quite a degree of complexity as so many aspects of West Australian state, businesss
a AUGUST 2011 | AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE 23
Phenomenal Woman
A Heart o and community are involved. The aim of the Festival is to present an accessible aspect to the whole CHOGM event for ordinary people - to celebrate the fact that all of these people from around the world are coming to our city. The Commonwealth Festival is also about showcasing the diversity of culture and arts in Western Austrence in yourself and your professionalism,. Live a compassionate life and know that everyone is struggling somehow. Trying to understand where someone else is coming from can help tremendously in finding a way to work together. Working with artists is great for this because it often involves a great deal of collaboration and understanding of each other’s ideas. AQT : How does an Afro – Aussie woman get to be where you are today? Shelagh : Firstly because I have come from an environment that has enabled me and had people offer me opportunity and mentorship. I certainly can’t take the credit for doing it on my own. I have worked with some fantastic people and what I’ve achieved is very much a joint effort.. The rest is hard work - you lose a lot of your privacy and personal time, often work

obligations can go on until very late at night so you have to be passionate and prepared for that, and believe it is worth while. It’s about believing in something bigger than yourself. It’s not about you accomplishing things but it’s about the bigger picture. AQT : Having been away from home for so long how to do you keep connected to your culture? Shelagh : I don’t believe any culture is a fixed thing. Everyone has the right to pursue their own happiness, I hate it when people use culture to say this is how things have to be, but I acknowledge things like family and respect for your fellow man. It’s important not to forget home, so I keep in touch with my parents and go back regularly. I’m also interested in the African artists of our generation such as Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and follow their work. AQT : What was/is your most rewarding moment in your career? Shelagh : The Perth Festival was the most amazing opportunity by far, and a real honour to be part of. AQT : What was the defining moment of
your life that led you into your career path? Shelagh : Being in a theatre and seeing an incredible piece of theatre from Russia in the 1990s. Although I could not follow the language it was a powerful experience and made me realise how special these moments were and how lucky I was not only to have had that experience, but to have been part of making it happen. AQT : Finally what words of advice and encouragement do you have for the AfroAussie woman? Shelagh : Be aware of the opportunities that exist around you and don’t be afraid to try something new. Keep a positive view and you will often find people who want to help you succeed. Have your own passion and self-confidence. Have confidence in your dreams. The Commonwealth Festival Perth (October 23 to 30) will bring a week of colour and activity with exhibitions, music, art, films and light displays and fireworks. Key supporters of the festival are the Department of Culture and the Arts and Lotterywest.

SUCCESS, Knows No Birth Right By Emmanuel Solomon
I
nheriting your fortune might make some people look down on you. It might make people think you had everything handed to you, and that you’ve never had to work a day in your life. It might make them say you were born with a silver spoon, and they might not bother to respect you. Nassef Sawiris is the perfect rebuttal to all these assumptions.
Nassef began supervising the construction wing of Orascom in 1990. In 1998, Orascom Construction Industries was incorporated, and he became the CEO. In addition to running his company, Nassef directs several international exchanges including NASDAQ Dubai, Bensix, and Lafarge. He is the President of Egyptian Cement Company.
Nassef got the foundations of his wealth from his father, Onsi Sawiris. He is the youngest of three sons. Both his father and his brothers reside in the 2010 list of Africa’s top ten billionaires. But what’s interesting about Nassef is that he has surpassed all three of his elders. He is counted as the second richest man in Africa, while his father is the fifth, his brother Naguib is the sixth, and his other brother Samih is the tenth. Nassef has managed all this despite being the last born son.
Nassef’s business interests have led him to join the American Chamber of Commerce and the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In addition to business, the 48 year old has healthy political interests. He is a member of the Egyptian National Democratic Party, where he sits in the Business Secretariat. He also sits in the Young President’s Club. Success certainly knows no birth place.
Nassef made his money in construction. His went to school at the International German School of Cairo, in his homeland Egypt. For his higher education, he went to the University of Chicago, where he graduated with a degree in Economics. His studies served him well, because they enabled him to not only manage his vast inheritance, but also to grow it beyond his own father’s wildest dreams. He pushed the family fortune beyond the $20 billion mark, and it was truly a case of the student surpassing the teacher. 26 AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2011

With its dreamy designs featuring rich, fiery reds punctuated with intense shades of blue and green, the Trésor Brillant concept is truly diverse, ranging from the highly detailed to the highly abstract. The repetitive figurative designs appear to be infinite, while twinkling designs create a glossy look and add the perfect touch of glamour. The fabrics let every woman shine in all her allure. The model featured in this campaign is Ovo Drenth. Ovo’s parents are Nigerian though she was born and raised in Holland.
The latest collection from Vlisco named “Trésor Brillant” is amazing!

struck A year later, in 2008, J Boog met Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage and there was an instant chemistry. Shortly after, Gramps, J Boog and other Wash House family members were in Jamaica recording in such prestigious places as Bob Marley’s “Tuff Gong” Studio, Don Corleone’s “Hit Maker”, Bobby Digital’s “Digital B”, Shaggy’s “Big Yard”, Sugar Minott’s “Youth Man Promotion” and more. n behalf of the Afriqan Times Magazine caught up with International Reggae Sensation J Boog on his “Let’s Do it Again” Tour Down under. Brought to you by Jamrock Sydney’s No.1 Reggae Club & Dox Entertainment.
Jerry Afemata, aka J Boog, is nothing short of an international superstar, with his unique mix of reggae, R’n’B and hip-hop, all combined with a touch of that Polynesian Flavor. J Boog is a man of many influences. The singer of Samoan descent was born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, California. Growing up in the rough streets of Compton, the strong sense of tradition and culture that J Boog absorbed from his family was instrumental in his path to stay off the streets and begin a successful music career.
J Boog’s music career became serious in 2005, when a couple of brothers from his neighborhood brought him to one of his favorite artists, George “Fiji” Veikoso”. The two began working together immediately Jerry ended up moving to Hawaii in 2006 to continue developing his craft and following his dream. After releasing his debut album “Hear Me Roar” in 2007, he joined the musical family Wash House Music Inc, a record label based in Hawaii and San Francisco. 30 AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2011
The results are apparent when listening to Boog’s new music. It is authentic Island Music and genuine Jamaican reggae at the same time. When you listen, you will feel he truly knows matters of the heart. His new album, “Back Yard Boogie” is slated for release in 2011 and features the reggae giants Richie Spice, Tarrus Riley, Fiji and Morgan Heritage, as well as Hip-Hop superstar Snoop Dogg. Leading up to the release of his official new album, J Boog is dropping the “J Boog EP” on June 14th 2011 via Wash House Hawaii/EMPIRE Distribution. The EP features five brand new songs, along with three previously released songs, including his smash hits “Let’s Do It Again” and “So Far Gone”.

iOpena iPhone Case
When we first saw the latest iPod shuffle, our immediate thought was “make it any smaller and you’ll have to build it into the headphones somehow.” We doubt anyone was listening, but that’s pretty much exactly what has happened with the Sony Walkman W260 ($60-$80). Designed with active users in mind, the W260 is rinsable, wearable, and water-resistant, and offers features like quick charging, a black or white casing, and either 2GB or 4GB of storage.
As our European friends have been telling us for years, Spotify ($Free) is what the long-rumored iTunes subscription service was supposed to be. Boasting a catalog of 15 million songs, it lets you search for and listen to specific songs, artists, and entire albums (for up to 10 hours a month), after which you’ll need to pony up $5 for the Premium service Sorry iTunes Match, but you’re no match for this.
Let’s see: your iPhone is always with you, and you never know when you might need a bottle opener, so why not keep them together? That’s the idea behind the Opena iPhone Case ($40). Made from protective polycarbonate and ABS plastic, the Opena’s unique design hides a slide-out bottle opener on its back, offers compatibility with both GSM and CDMA iPhones, and gives you open access to all your ports, buttons, controls, and cameras.
