events-calendar.after5ive.org LETTER FROM THE EDITOR December is a wholesome month. The holiday season is a time for family, gift-giving and decorative cookies. We light candles and bring out the good silver. We feast and sip eggnog, and flip through photo albums. It’s all very sweet. Then New Year’s Eve rolls around, and everyone goes crazy. Conditions are stormy in various parts of the U.S. The 2012 presidential election was out of control, women’s health is being threatened by legislature passing all over the country, the state of the environment is in a very real crisis, the threat of an ancient predicted apocalypse hangs over like a dark cloud. But, through the strife and tribulation, what do we have? A town full of music and strong drinks, remarkable artists, dancers and moshers. We have a NightLife. “But there isn’t anything to do in El Paso” they say. My friends, there is. There is a lot to do here, and these 80 pages detail exactly that. Scattered throughout are Q&A’s with different nightlife notables: roller girls, DIY musicians and more. Dive into our ever-growing collection of breweries. Sip an expertly crafted cocktail at the Garden. Cheer on the brave women on derby teams and party downtown. . . dress to the nines, ready to dash, crash and flaunt your way to happiness. We’ve got the places to dance, drink and dine. Make it a good one with our roundup of New Year’s Eve dinners for every palate and price. Figure out what to wear, where to go, and what to drink with our festive guide. Now grab your coat. We’re going out. The resolutions begin January 1st, right? So why not send the year out with a bang? And by bang, we mean the After5ive way! Yours truly,

Venicia N. Solis Editor-In-Chief

elve into the vast gastronomic offerings of The Pacifica. Anyone who says you can only find good seafood on the coasts is just plain wrong. Some spots do it better than others, but, The Pacifica offers up long lists of innovative creations featuring creatures from the sea. This is a seafood lover’s paradise! From the moment it opened, crowds crammed through the doors. The Pacifica filled a niche that El Paso didn’t even know was empty. The sexy spot features a board of appetizing dishes such as the Governor Tacos, made of shrimps, cheese and chipotle sauce or the Pacifica Tostada- made of Shrimp Ceviche, jicama and coconut. The Fisco Tostadas are made of tuna with their special sauce of the house and pore. And for dessert? We might be able to sate our sweet tooth with a piece of fruit in the summer, but in the dead of winter, nothing but a dessert made with plenty of cream and sugar will do. Whether we’re drowning our romantic sorrows or celebrating finding true love, you’d better believe that dessert will be on the menu. The owners of omnivorous restaurants have really gone above and beyond lately to cater to our desires, which is perfect for nibbling with offerings off the killer beverage list. Enjoy! The sophisticated restaurant been turning out a worthy array of dim sum for more than a decade and is constantly perpetually packed, thank to its ability to sate dim sum aficionados with its massive selection of handmade specialties to please anyone after rarer Chinese delicacies, like the CHANG’S CHICKEN LETTUCE WRAPS, seared minced chicken, mushrooms, green onions, and water chestnuts served over crispy rice sticks and served with cool, crisp lettuce cups or try the WOK-CHARRED P.F. f you need an excuse to start (or enliven) a relationship that involves an overnight, here’s one. Basico Bistro & Café ambience sets itself apart from the stop-n-go Starbucks. An eclectic mix of tables provides for study or relaxation. In addition, the coffees, cakes and pastries are delicious! Bistro also offers beer, an extensive wine list, soups and sandwiches.

This bistro and café are anything but ordinary. This café/bar has a mellow, yet upscale, feel and all are complete with a variety of seating available. The joint serves a wide variety of American dishes and the Blackberry Cream Cheese & Lemon Glaze Scone are reason enough to give that part of the menu your attention. You can’t go wrong with the pizza or the Red Sangria, and the grilled butter coffee cake with vanilla bean ice cream is heavenly. No matter how cold it is outside, the atmosphere inside of Básico Bistro+Café is warm as it is inviting. Coffee lovers will cry tears of joy when they sip on the Espresso Doppio and will shiver over the Espresso Americano. The space is beautiful, the service casually professional and the solidly French bistro fare very impressive. And while dinner is wonderful here, brunch is a thing of beauty.

ELEGANCE AT IT’S BEST ike skinny jeans and narrow ties, food is trendy. What was fashionable last year — burgers, say, or tacos — might be as out tomorrow as the boot cut. But restaurateurs can’t just go to H&M to update their menus. So what’s a chef to do? play it smart: Invest in classics and update with trends. It’s the classics that strike you first at the Thyme Matters.

ome while the weather is still warm — this year, that might well be December — and kick back on the patio with one of the various delicious wines. But the very best way to enjoy it is sitting in the outdoor patio that line the stretch, enjoying a tasty dish, a drink (or three) and the best people-watching in the city. Here, in no particular order. If you’re enjoying the scenery and your conversation and aren’t ready to order a main course, follow up with the Caprese Bruschetta, fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil with toasted french baguette $8. Diners are less likely to commit a fashion faux pas when it comes to Thyme Matters’ signature dishes such as the Filet Mignon, crispy onions, parmesan mashed potatoes and seared asparagus $31. If pasta is what you crave, try the Linguini with Skewered Shrimp, sun dried tomato and pesto mixed with fresh vegetables and crushed red pepper $17. One bite of the juicy Pork Tenderloin— and your taste buds will override your brain. This popular dish comes with raspberry guajillo sauce, parmesan mashed potatoes and blended greens $19.Thyme Matters may seem as traditional as a little black dress, but it’s tricked out with the latest accessories. 5 Delicious Fall Wines by Shilo Urban

A

utumn is a fine time to sit back, relax and crack open a bottle of vino to sip and savor as the days slowly grow shorter, the temperature cooler and the leaves more colorful. This time of year calls for rich and buttery wines that are strong enough to match the heartier dishes served to warm you up during cold weather. As summer’s busy energy slows into winter’s quiet snuggle, the ritual of a glass (or two!) of wine can be an ideal way to cherish the small, peaceful moments of life – and it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Many wine lovers turn to warming reds in the fall to fill the spirit with fuel and complement harvest foods like savory stews, roasted vegetables, spiced dishes and comfort cuisine. The best fall wines richly evoke their terroir, or the land they were grown in, reminding us of the blessings of the harvest and the many gifts from Mother Earth. Find your favorite wine for a brisk autumn day from these five selections: TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY! 2004 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape – You can’t go wrong with a cozy red from the appellation Chateauneuf du Pape, and this particular GrenacheSyrah blend tastefully echoes the verdant lushness of the Rhone Valley in Southern France. Red berries and black fruits mingle with a hint of olive and earthy undertones for a palate-pleasing taste that is mature for its age. Serve Clos des Papes with pasta, game dishes or curries. TRY THESE DELICIOUS WINES HO! HO! HO! 2010 Gamay, Malivoire – Malivoire is a small-lot, boutique producer in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada that uses mostly organic grapes to produce its wines. Their 2010 Gamay may be young but has a classic, non-tannin taste and a woodsy nose of cedar and juniper. With a full palate and toasty finish, this Gamay will pair well with peppery dishes like barbequed brisket, roast duck and wild boar.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! 2007 Nicolas Potel Bourgogne Rouge “Cuvee Gerard Potel” – For an affordable red wine that pairs well with any roasted meal, this bottle from Burgundy highlights the taste of the legendary Pinot Noir grape with added finesse from Volnay. Crisp fruits, red berries and smoky notes are supple on the palate with an elegant finish – ideal for a romantic fall dinner.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! 2008 Ca Rome Barbaresco Chiaramanti – From the Piedmont region of northern Italy, this special bottle is made from Nebbiolo grapes, a late-ripening fruit planted only on the warmest hillsides of the region. Expect strong tannins, a velvety mouth-feel and flavors of plum, cherry and roses. Well-balanced and able to stand up to rich dishes, serve this Barbaresco with hearty stews or enjoy with sharp, aged cheeses.

FELIZ NAVIDAD! 2008 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir – This silky, cool-climate red wine from the southern end of California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys is made from organic grapes and aged in French oak. Black fruits predominate, with hints of sandalwood and cinnamon as well as chocolate and clove – an indulgent autumn blend. With a medium body and even tannins, this bottle will please everyone and works equally well with a weekday dinner or all by itself at cocktail hour. After5ive.org :: (PAGE 14)

ooking may not be poetry, but in the right hands — whether those of a culinaryschool grad or a mother re-creating authentic family recipes — it can qualify as art. At La Tosca- art is definitely happening. This is a gracious, romantic arbiter of French food, with mouth-watering entrées. You’ll swoon over the La Tosca $7.95— homemade sausage sautéed with jalapeños and red onions. The menu is short but powerful, a direct, focused and ambitious stab at some of our favorite foods, including Mango Mousse cake $5.95 and the Panacotta Cappuccino $3.95. If French is the language of love, then French food is the cuisine of lust -- an entire canon of recipes and preparations that, when done well, can make a lady’s panties leap from her body and a gentleman’s thoughts turn to committing impure acts of passion in the street. And La Tosca Cuisine does things so very, very well that the menu ought to come with some kind of warning sticker. Even the most socially inept can’t help but feel like a man (or woman) of taste and sophistication here. From the decadent menu and seriously French wine list to the beautiful, intimate space and wonderfully comforting staff, there’s no more romantic getaway than this haven.

SUSAKI LOUNGE

or obvious reasons, we don’t make New Year’s resolutions here at after5ive magazine that involve cutting delicious morsels out of our diet. But since we used the holidays as an excuse to go on even more of a gastronomic bender than usual this year, we are thinking about switching our binge eating tendencies to lighter fare for a few days. Namely, sushi. If you’re on board with that sentiment -and in want of a great spot – then SUSAKI LOUNGE is that place. The dining room at this eastside joint is not exactly opulent, but its richly appointed and colorful, and absolutely comfortable for a lingering meal over dozens of bite-sized bits of fish. And you’ll want to linger, ordering round after round. Susaki Lounge serves up fresh cuts of what you’d expect as well as some surprises, plus wellcrafted rolls and hand rolls, all beautifully displayed and humbly delivered. The chefs at this sushi lounge go to great lengths to follow traditional Japanese recipes and cooking techniques, and to do it in a surprisingly serene setting, complete with a smile.

l Paso has an abundance of local restaurants, all devoted to a culinary canon that marries sensational cooking into dishes that are delicious -whether you’re eating noodles on the street or chowing down at a formal feast. But, few carry a well balance between food and beer. The Hoppy Monk offers a good selection of specialties such as the pan-seared Icelandic cod loin on a bed of kale, white beans and butternut squash. Whew! If that weren’t enough, we paired it with a tasty Brooklyn brew. Whether our team makes it or not, Super Bowl weekend is always a wonderful time of year. Mostly because it’s an excuse to daytime drink on a Sunday while we munch down truly impressive quantities of bar snacks, which vastly enhances our viewing pleasure. The festivities wouldn’t be complete either without at least one platter of Fish n Chips (my favorite) or a healthy salad that will convert you to an herbivore.

Natural Health

Amazing Benefits: Pomegranate by Jessica Guiller

Pomegranate is a round shaped fruit with juicy red seeds that have a sweet taste. The seeds, peel and aril of the Pomegranate fruit are all edible, but it is the juicy seeds that are often the primary source of nutrients. In addition to being a high source of fiber, pomegranate is an excellent source of essential amino acids, vitamin A, C, E, B5, B3 or Niacin, Iron, folic acid, potassium, and antioxidant polyphenols. These properties make pomegranate a great home remedy for many ailments.

Benefits of the Pomegranate: Pomegranate has been consumed for thousands of years due to its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and other healing properties. Women have used Pomegranate for centuries for beauty concerns including wrinkles, acne, dry and saggy skin. Many studies have also shown that pomegranate may help with heart disease, arteriosclerosis, blood clots, weakened immune system, viral infections, dental plaque, erectile dysfunction and prostate and breast cancer. A few recent studies suggest that regular use of Pomegranate extract may slow the spread of tumors and cancerous cells.

Side Effects of Pomegranate? Pomegranate is normally a safe fruit to eat when consumed in moderation. However, an overdose of Pomegranate seeds, its juice, oil or extract may cause diarrhea or upset stomach. In rare cases, some individuals can be allergic to the fruit. If you notice any sort of itchiness, swollen lips or tongue, or difficulty in swallowing or breathing, you should discontinue use and to consult your physician immediately.

Where and How to Buy Pomegranate Fresh pomegranate fruit and packaged pomegranate juice can be bought at many grocery stores. When buying Pomegranate Juice, it is recommended to look for 100% pure organic Pomegranate juice with no added sugars. You can also find Pomegranate Oil and extract at many herbal food stores.

A great Fruit to include in our diet! (PAGE 23) :: After5ive.org

Uses of Pomegranate Cancer

It is believed that the anti-oxidant activity in Pomegranate may induce apoptosis, a process which causes self destruction of cancerous cells. While a few studies have shown encouraging results in the treatment of cancer, further studies are still required to confirm these results. Nevertheless, in people with a family history of cancer, daily intake of at least 8 oz. of organic Pomegranate juice or a Pomegranate extract or oil capsule twice daily may help suppress the development of cancerous cells.

Cold and Flu The high amount of vitamin C in Pomegranate may help with flu and cold symptoms. Simply drink 1 to 2 glasses of pure Pomegranate juice diluted in one litre of water throughout the day.

Coronary Heart Disease A few studies suggest that Pomegranate may expedite the oxygen supply to the heart muscles and help treat many heart conditions including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and coronary heart disease. The anti-platelet activity of Pomegranate is also known to help with arterial plaque and blood clots. Therefore, simply drinking 8 oz. of organic Pomegranate Juice daily for at least three months may provide significant improvement in heart health.

Dental Plaque and Gingivitis The antioxidant activity of Pomegranate juice may prevent and remove dental plaque and restore optimal gum health. Therefore a simple remedy for plaque and gingivitis is to use organic Pomegranate juice as a mouth wash or chew on one tablespoon of pomegranate seeds after every meal.

Erectile Dysfunction Pomegranate may help with erectile dysfunction by increasing and balancing the blood flow to the heart and subsequently to the rest of the body. Simply drink a glass of organic Pomegranate Juice or take one capsule of Pomegranate extract daily as a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction.

Osteoarthritis Pomegranate is rich in potassium and polyphenols which may help with the restoration of cartilage in joints. Therefore, drinking a glass of organic Pomegranate juice or eating one whole Pomegranate daily can inhibit the onset of Osteoarthritis.

PMS and Menopausal Problems Pomegranate is believed to help balance the estrogen level in women. Therefore, daily intake of a glass of pomegranate juice or a capsule of Pomegranate extract can help combat PMS and menopausal problems.

Wrinkles and Saggy Skin The anti-oxidant properties of Pomegranate may contribute to the regeneration of skin cells and reverse the signs of aging such as wrinkles and saggy skin. Drinking a glass of Pomegranate juice or eating a Pomegranate daily can reduce wrinkles and give a rosy glow to the skin. Pomegranate juice can also be applied directly to the affected skin for half an hour before a shower for a healthy and rejuvenated look. Pomegranate oil can also be mixed into your daily moisturizer to help maintain younger, healthy looking skin. After5ive.org :: (PAGE 24)

How to Wear Colored Jeans: 20 Ways-FASHION by Kelsey Mulvey Confession time: you have a love-hate relationship with colored skinny jeans. Though you adore the funky pop of color, what are you supposed to wear them with? Hate to break it to you, but partial nudity is not an option (but you’d never do that anyway). Surprisingly, there are so many options that are contemporary and chic. To find the ensemble that works best for you, take a look at our style guide. 1. Give your pants a professional twist with a blazer Dressing for an internship can be a little… boring. Refresh your internship apparel with your skinnies. “Because colored jeans are so fun, I like to give mine a polished look with a navy blazer and white tee,” says Katie Naymon, a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University and HC Contributing Writer. Just make sure that this look obeys your internship’s dress code. You don’t want to commit a fashion faux pas, especially at the office. 2. Take on fall with a cozy sweater When combating the chilly fall weather, your secret weapon is the ever-so-cozy sweater. For a funky twist, don a pair of colored jeans as well. If you’re feeling a little risky, rock your pants with a crazy, patterned sweater. Chaotic, but we like it. 3. Pair with a chambray Deny it all you want, but you’re obsessed with your chambray top. Not only is it super hip, but you can also wear your chambray with almost everything. Though the denim-on-denim trend may be intimidating, the combination will actually look effortlessly chic. The best thing about this outfit is that any color will work!

4. Never underestimate the power of neutrals This outfit idea is perfect for the girl who cringed at the aforementioned style tip. If you want your pants to be the center of attention, pair them with neutrals. “Depending on the color, I like to make the jeans the statement of the outfit, so I usually like to go with a more neutral top and shoes so my colored jeans really stand out,” says Jessica Salerno, a senior at Ohio University and HC Contributing Writer. The best thing about this idea is that a simple switch from a white tee to a black long-sleeved shirt is the perfect “day-to-night” transformation.

5. Color Block, Color Block, Color Block To some, the phrase “color blocking” is scarier than a pair of Crocs. But don’t be afraid: color blocking doesn’t bite. On the contrary, it’s pretty cool. “I like to style my colored skinnies with a top in the same color family, but a different shade,” says Kim Horner, a senior at The College of New Jersey and HC Contributing Writer. “If I’m wearing teal jeans, I’ll pair it with a royal blue top.” If you have no idea what hue you should wear on top, your best bet is to wear a complementary color, which is a little different from Kim’s vibrant trick. Um, a complementary what? Time to take out your color wheel from your kindergarten class to figure it out. The trick to using a color wheel is to choose colors that are opposites. For example, add a yellow top if you’re wearing purple jeans. Don’t worry collegiettes—color blocking will be a breeze soon enough.

6. Rock a leather jacket Usually, colored jeans don’t scream, “rock and roll.” What are you supposed to do when all you want is a super hardcore ensemble? Put on a different pair of pants? You could, or you could add a leather jacket to your colored jeans. The edginess of the jacket coupled with your perky pants will create this awesome contrast that everyone in your lecture will secretly love. 7. Polo prep-fection Calling all Lily Pulitzer fanatics: this is the look for you. Maximize your prep status with ballet flats and pearl earrings. Even if you’re not a self-proclaimed prep, sport an oversized polo. (PAGE 25) :: After5ive.org

8. Go wild with prints If you love to make a fashion statement, you must sport your colored skinnies with a patterned top. With a ton of different prints to choose from, how could you not want to give this trick a try? Subdue this look with more refined patterns, such as stripes or polka dots. Get ready to get a lot of attention with this outfit – all eyes will be on you.

9. Simple with a button-down Nothing’s better than a buttondown shirt: easy to wear, versatile, and absolutely classic. Since your ensemble is essentially a blank canvas, you have the choice to add accessories or channel your inner minimalist. If you want to sport a polished look, wear a neutral button-down. For a saucy alternative, pair your skinnies with a vibrant top.

10. Keep it casual with a tanktop If you’re a laidback kind of girl, keep it simple with a cute tanktop. Give this ensemble a chic twist with awesome hair or makeup. How fantastic does a fishtail and smoky eye sound?

12. Sexy with sheer

11. Peplum Why don’t you pair cheery pants with an equally fun top? Out of all the shirts you can choose from, rock the peplum. Not only is peplum one of the hottest trends, the flared top will also look adorable with colored jeans. Whether you rock a vibrant or neutral, this ensemble is sure to make a splash.

Truth be told, some colored skinnies may intimidate some collegents. To prevent your outfit from looking like something on “The Man Repeller,” pair your poppy pants with a sheer top. The subtle hint of skin is sexy and chic.

15. Monochromatic is anything but boring Believe it or not, you can don a shirt that’s the same color as your jeans. It may sound a little weird, but a monochromatic ensemble is so in. A bunch of fashion icons have worn the trend: Miroslava Duma, Blake Lively… the list goes on. Just make sure that both the shirt and jeans are the same color. Nothing is worse than brick red pants with a cherry top. Don’t forget to suppress this striking outfit with natural makeup.

14. Cool with flannel Yes, collegiettes—you can rock hipster status with a pair of skinny jeans. Don a plaid shirt that matches your skinnies or go crazy and wear a clashing flannel. In a few months, you’ll be saying that you wore flannel with colored skinnies before it was cool.

13. Double the denim with a jean jacket Contrary to popular belief, jean jackets are hip – Clarissa from Clarissa Explains it All totally saw this trend coming. If you liked the chambray idea, you’ll love this one. Not to mention the jacket will keep you warm on those cold autumn days. Finish this ensemble with a simple white top and a basic scarf.

16. Look like a lady in lace Who doesn’t love lace? Whether you’re going to your favorite frat party or to coffee with your crush, this ensemble exudes femininity. Finish it off with wavy hair and a pair of booties.

17. Sport your skinnies with your collegiette apparel It’s not just a coincidence that your college’s colors match your skinny jeans – it’s destiny. Whether you’re headed to a tailgate party or your hockey team’s first game of the season, be sure to wear your skinnies to the next big game. Most people will probably wear normal jeans and that free shirt they received during welcome week, so you’ll be sure to get loads of attention. And with loads of attention comes jumbotron status. 18. Pump up the accessories This tip isn’t for the cowardly. As a fashionista, it’s your duty to take each ensemble to the next level. Instead of simply pairing skinny jeans with a shirt and calling it a day, add a slew of accessories: scarves, necklaces, bracelets, brooches—you get the picture. After this ensemble, you’ll rock style savant status. 19. Layer up Why wear one shirt when you could wear two? Whether you want to pile on tanks or wear a camisole underneath a Henley, layering shirts is an option when wearing colored jeans. To make sure you don’t look over color-blocked, make sure that one of your shirts is a neutral. It just goes to show you that sometimes two heads are better than one. 20. Sparkle with an embellished top You don’t need to wear an ultra glitzy top to give your skinny jeans some sparkle. Instead of modeling a colorful top, work a sequined shirt with a neutral color palette. And just like that, you have your going-out ensemble for this weekend.

Since fashion is all about taking risks, don’t be afraid to mix and match some of these style tips. Just remember that with any ensemble, a dash of confidence is the most important accessory. After5ive.org :: (PAGE 26)

6 Excuse-Proof Ways to Exercise Before Work (Even if you aren’t a morning person)

By Chelsea Bush

Are you reluctant to participate in that whole cardio at work trend? Good news: exercising before work is about to get… possible. Maybe it’s the New Year approaching, or maybe it’s a holiday fitness panic, but I’m on a major health kick lately. I’m all about getting more exercise by cheating the system (the “system” being my morning routine: wake up, down coffee, assume post at laptop). It shouldn’t be so hard to squeeze in a little 30-minute workout before we hit the grind, but it is. Why?

See if any of these sound familiar: Just ate breakfast. Need the extra sleep. No energy in the morning. It’s still dark outside. Don’t want to stink at the office. Spent an hour getting hot and I’m not about to blow it at the gym. These are all valid reasons to skip exercise in the morning. Not. They’re all B.S. True, it can be more time-consuming for the ladies who have to redo hair and makeup before work. But if we really want something, we’ll figure out a way to make it work, right? Wait — why do we really want it? Why do we want to sleep in our gym clothes and hide our very loud alarm clock in the dresser across the room so we’ll be forced to get out of bed at the crack of dawn? I’ll tell you why. Because it’s December. We can’t afford to get the winter sniffles like all of our friends. And we certainly don’t want to flush our holiday cheer (read: Christmas bonus) down the toilet due to a bad attitude at work. If you need a third reason to schedule some extra exercise this season, how’s this: I know you’ve been ignoring David Zinczenko’s advice and you’re chugging gingerbread lattes like they’re going out of style. I am. So get out your pencils, boys and girls. We’re about to cross all the excuses off our lists and master the elusive morning workout.

Ready? (PAGE 27) :: After5ive.org

1. Just ate breakfast. Well, thank goodness you know that you need to eat before you work out in the morning — but did you know that you don’t need to eat a Denny’s Grand Slamwich? (See, David, I am listening!) Fuel your workout by having a light, gutfriendly snack as soon as you wake up (put a protein bar in your pillowcase if you need to). Then eat Breakfast Part II after your workout. More tips on what to eat here. 2. Need the extra sleep. Uh, just go to bed earlier. And make those 7-8 hours of sleep count. 3. No energy in the morning. Get moving and you’ll get energy. I hate to say it, but it’s that simple. If your morning routine requires exercise, like getting from point A to point B (rather than jogging around the block), you’ll do it — and a few minutes in, you’ll be wide awake. If you live in California or own one of these, then pound the pavement to work. If you have grade schoolage kids and a flexible schedule, get in on the walking school bus: communities across the U.S. have rotating groups of parents that walk the neighborhood gaggle to school every morning. No gaggle and nowhere to go? Fine: perk up with a coffee protein shake. 4. It’s still dark outside. I know you feel like it’s the middle of the night at 7 a.m. It is. But you can use light to trick your brain into waking up. So flip on the stadium lights in your gym room and you’ll be up and at ‘em in no time. Or cash in on the abundant luminosity of corporate office fluorescents and do some cardio at work. Saying sayonara to coworkers at the elevator and taking 12 flights of stairs up to the office? Yep, that counts as a workout. 5. Don’t want to stink at the office. You’ll never catch me hitting the gym at 5 a.m. and blow-drying my hair in the locker room at 6. Not you, either? Well here are two fresh words to stuff into your lexicon: shower wipes. They’re big enough to clean your whole body, cost 50 cents a pop, and wipe away sweat and B.O. like a magic wand. So tuck a few in your Hermès briefcase and get treading already. 6. Spent an hour getting hot and I’m not about to blow it at the gym. There’s a magic wipe that can erase your B.O., but can it fix your chignon and reapply your lipstick? Nope. So here’s a thought: why not pick two days a week to go casual? These days, ballet flats, a cardigan and a ponytail will suffice whether you work at Goldman Sachs or 7-11, so don’t tell me you can’t forgo the stilos once in a while. Guys, same to you: sport casual attire a few times a week and it’ll only make your GQ days stand out even more.

Local ArtScene

At the Top of the Art Tree By Becky Salas

It is long said that “women can make a difference”. This represents what After5ive Magazine editors know to be true- when it comes to leadership, women are now taking on long-overdue roles. But, for every visible woman, there are dozens more who work tirelessly behind the scenes, whose accomplishments go unsung to the general public. So, to end this year with a bang, we parsed the qualifications and take a look at five remarkable artistic women who have truly made an impact in their fields, the city of El Paso and the world beyond our city limits. In contrast, they are the ones who are making things happen, doing their own thing, in their own style and at their own pace. We like to think of them as our local “renaissance” women of this generation.

It is with limited resources, passion and an enormous amount of patience, that these women - GET IT ALL SUCCESSFULLY DONE! Jakie Luve - We adore her for giving dance music a voice, a feminine touch and for showing the world that age and gender will NEVER have anything to do with talent. Jakie Luve tastefully fuses electronic music with her on air dynamic personality on the Bassment Mixshow. With an impressive résumé of online radio media, booking and networking, we at After5ive Magazine continuously wonder if there is anything this woman can’t do? We have loved Jackie since the moment we met her. The queen of personality never ceases to impress us with her evolving and provoking topics. A true artist and innovator.

Linda Duran - We love her for being one of the first ladies of electro in El Paso. She has brought us a soulful talent to the edgy sounds of electro underground. When we called this girl “amazing”, it was an understatement. Not just as any DJ or producer, this trailblazing techno and house maven makes BOMBS on the dance floor. It’s no wonder her career is rising at lightning speed. We can’t wait to hear more from her.

(PAGE 29) :: After5ive.org

Crysti Couture - We admire her for: her unapologetic forays into community journalism and most importantly for being a total entertainment visionary. Crysti Couture’s consistent enthusiasm demonstrates that you can be artistic, ironic, political and have fun at the same time. Christi embraces us with edgy episodes on the 915 Voice podcast and is also currently working on publishing her first book titled “Chuco: Graffiti From the Soul to the Streets”. This will feature an amazing exposition on El Paso street art. It is her opinions, her blissful prowess and her glowing impression that denotes our attention! Need we say more? This girl is explosive!

Annabelle Zeta - After5ive Magazine has a wonderful team of talented, beautiful and remarkable women. Therefore, it is no wonder why we must give homage to one of our own. This artistic and very unique creator remains true to her beliefs. Her loyal devotion and positive yet realistic approach to life has given her the willpower to remain strong and independent. From her immense knowledge to her editorial creativity, this is the glue of our publication ladder. “Embracing both passion and inspiration, you can always count on her ingenious flair to get any venture accomplished - and then some!”

Emily Davis is definitely making waves. Her silky, funk-inflected sound delivers beautiful lyrical content with poetry from the inner soul. Her album release in 2011-“Dark Matter,” created impressive support from the local scene. This independent diva spares no time in taking her destiny abroad. As a traveling song writer/musician, Emily’s music takes you into a sweet world of sultry vocals and joyful bliss. The blend of inspirational infused edginess provides style, grace and creativity all in one! There are no boundaries for this upcoming artist.

Men’s Fitness

Alert: You’re Pushing Yourself Too Hard By Ethan Boldt

You’ve seen commercials that feature athletes grunting through pain as if it’s a virtue. You’ve watched sports icons lead their teams to unbelievable comebacks on their seemingly inexhaustible shoulders. You’ve seen veins popping on the grimacing faces of those on “World’s Strongest Men” and Tour de France riders alike. It’s not just macho to push yourself to the limit -- it’s considered cool. But how do you know if you’re about to take your body beyond that limit and into dangerous territory? Especially in hot weather, there are risks you should you know about. As long as you can read your body’s signs, you can prepare for pushing it without going over the top. Here, your body’s warning signs and what to do about ‘em: Warning 1: You Stop Sweating When doing cardio, your biggest risk is overheating. “If you stop sweating, you’re in danger of heatstroke -- which can kill you,” warns Clint Phillips, a certified strength and conditioning specialist. What to do: In such a case, “Stop working out immediately, hydrate and cool off. Go somewhere airconditioned, splash water on you, get in front of a fan, use an ice pack on your head.” Avoid overheating when you’re training outside in hot or humid weather by going out in the morning or evening for more effective, less risky workouts. Warning 2: Your Urine Isn’t Clear Tom Seabourne, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and holder of four ultradistance cycling world records, recommends that you check your hydration levels via your urine color -- ideally, it’s clear. The darker (yellow) it gets, the closer you are to dehydration. What to do: Go-to drinks should contain electrolytes with essential elements like sodium, potassium and magnesium. While sports drinks can be a boon for hot outdoor workouts, Phillips urges that you avoid energy drinks, which may push your heart rate too high. Oh, and water’s good! Warning 3: Your Resting Heart Rate Is High Keep abreast of your resting heart rate, which you can check after a good night’s sleep. “If you wake up and your resting heart rate is consistently 10 beats above your regular resting heart rate, that’s a red flag,” says Seabourne. It indicates that the body is in an overtrained mode and is not sufficiently recovered, even after a night’s rest. This can be due to a very strenuous cardio workout or even a grueling strength training session. According to Greg Haff, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist at West Virginia University, higher repetition schemes -- such as 20 ser set -- can take four times as long to recover from than lower rep sets, such as five. If summer heat is involved, fatigue can be even greater, making recovery time longer. What to do: During cardio workouts, make sure you use a heart rate monitor. Phillips advises that you never go over 90 percent of your maximum heart rate. (This can be calculated by subtracting your age from the number 220. To calculate 90 percent of that, multiply by 0.9.) And on days when you wake up with a resting heart rate that is higher than normal, your body is telling you that it needs more recovery. Listen and take the day off. (PAGE 31) :: After5ive.org

Warning 4: You’re Still Sore For strength training, soreness that lasts more than a day or two usually means overtraining. Other symptoms include a lingering sense of lethargy, achiness, almost flu-like symptoms, a lack of motivation to train and even irritability. “If you can’t lift as much weight or do as many reps [as you did the week before], you are probably overtraining,” says Phillips. And pain is only normal when it is throughout the whole working muscle, he adds, but pain in a joint or isolated in one small spot in a muscle means something’s wrong. What to do: Get your z’s. Says Seabourne: Seven to eight hours of sleep is needed for an adequate release of growth hormone to build and repair muscle. When working out, err on the side of intensity over volume. Phillips says a couple of heavy sets for each muscle group is plenty. As “for cardio, I’d rather have someone do 20 to 30 minutes of high-intensity intervals than an hour of lower intensity work.” Also, consider working out with a partner, who can keep an eye on you (and vice versa).

Pushing yourself during your workout is the only way to get the results you want, but do you know your body’s warning signs that you’re over-doing it? After5ive.org :: (PAGE 32)

“Auxiliary Music for all Rock Lovers”. Low Luster League has developed a unique sound over the years: It’s gritty, electronic, and intelligent. It is safe to say that the trend to marry hard style with industrial scene and a like it or leave it attitude has created buzz in the realm of rock music. LLL, has risen to take on the lead through astonishing forces of lyrical emotion and inner conflict. With the 2006 - Demo/Independent Albums “SHH! IT HAPPENS!” and “IF IT’S NOT ONE THING.. IT’S THE OTHER” clearly demonstrate a multitude of growth. The 2007 - Independent Album “IT’S NOT WHAT YOU HAVE.. BUT WHAT YOU DO WITH IT” depicted a deep connection of dialog. But what is most impressive, is their 2008 - 1st place winner(s) of the 2nd season of the battle of the bands reality show Jammin’ [on SiTV NETWORK]. Check out their thoughts on their creative process and their grand plan for total rock domination.

Names of Low Luster League band members and instruments they play... Hapa Martinez/Guitar & Vocals Oakie Granados/Drums Roob Cordero/Keyboard Coe Escapite/Guitar Why did you pick your band name? The name’s technically just a name based around the projects extreme humbleness How and when did you form? Project was created and officially launched by Martinez in 2006. Began as a solo-project, having guest musicians, and evolved to official lineup 2013 Why did you decide to play the genre or genres you do? To create/play music done wasn’t necessarily a “lets focus on certain genre and just do that”. I’d say it all came about due to our favorite type of music. Rock. Took advantage of bilingual (eng/spa) and incorporated just that. Who are your musical influences? Influences range from Beatles to Bowie ..Caifanes to Strokes to Joy Division to Ramones Etc... What other local music artists/bands do you guys like to listen to? What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?) LLL songs usually speak of various things.. fav quotes such as, shit happens, if not one thing, the other, ...love, respect, heartbreaks and everything over and inbetween. What is the weirdest, funniest or most embarrassing thing to happen to you while on tour? Funniest/Weirdest things that happened on tour vary. Yet if had to select one, would probably have to be flying, preparing for a fest gig in Lafayette LA. Marvelous evening, all’s set and come play time! It starts raining heavily! We play a song and a half, full house evaporates, they shut us and all electricity down. We ended up forming a line of 15+ cars, headed to a bar and rocked the nite away. Hahahhhahh ..I broke my guitar to top nite off. . left it on speaker to mosh/dancetherefore fell..broke. What image do you think your music conveys? I’d have to say our music conveys whatever the song is speakin of. Ex: our song “Riddle Roulette” conveys “RESPECT”. Whether gay, peeps who go w/carpe diem, athiests, leader, followers, in the end, we live the life we allow, preferably what makes us happy.. But through it all.. respect sets cherry on top. Everyones ok...etc.

Feature Story

A step by step guide on how to survive the end of the world By Alana Blatz

There are many theories and prophecies about what’s going to happen to us all on Dec. 21, 2012. You’ve heard them all and have probably seen tons of glamorized “doomsday” movies. There are naysayers out there and that’s fine, but there is a need for end of the world preparedness. Here are the top five ways you should prepare for the very possible end, zombie apocalypse style.

GET A NEW GROUP OF FRIENDS. Forget all of those people you currently hang out with, or at least look at them critically. If your current group of friends are not physically fit or do not have the mental capacity to help you survive the end of the world, say goodbye. You probably like them because of their “great” personalities or how “loyal” they have been. Stop thinking like that. If Walking Dead has taught me anything, you need people with survival skills who can kick zombies in the chest, not your best friend from high school.

SURVIVAL NECESSITIES. Vodka. That is the number one survival necessity. First, it can clean wounds when you inevitably run out of rubbing alcohol. Also, you might want to be slightly inebriated if the world is ending, but that is just an opinion. (PAGE 35) :: After5ive.org

Aside from the obvious necessities like canned food or water, one recommendation is to learn how to cook and enjoy eating cockroaches. Cockroaches survive everything and learning how to prepare them—or at least stomach them—will help you survive far longer than people who have just stocked up on ramen and beans. Also, get an obscene amount of weaponry and ammo. Learn how to correctly use whatever weapons you have in you arsenal. This is America: respect the second amendment.

LEARN SOME KIND OF MARKETABLE SKILL. At least one person in your survival group should have medical experience since people will inevitably get sick, or hurt, or lose a semi-important limb and suffer a slightly debilitating injury. Another group member should be able to hunt or farm. The group needs a member who can cook and two people who are fertile. If you don’t fill one of these vital roles, you probably won’t survive the end of the world.

THROW AWAY YOUR MORALS. If the world wasn’t in the middle of an unexplainable zombie apocalypse, people might see loose morals as a problem; but the end of the world makes killing people a moral grey area. Everything is about survival. The bottom line is your life. So shoot people and never look back. Loot stuff and simultaneously justify this by citing survival. Forget your current ideas of “right and wrong” and recall everything you’ve learned about survival of the fittest.

LIVE LIKE YOU ARE DYING. Climb a mountain, ride a mechanical bull, tell someone how you actually feel, go skydiving, kiss that person you’ve always been afraid to kiss, get front bangs; do whatever you have been putting off doing because the world is ending. You no longer have an excuse for procrastination and fear because the world is ending and this is your last chance to do anything. After5ive.org :: (PAGE 36)

The New Couple’s Guide to the Holidays By Chiara Atik

When the holiday season is a relationship first, heed a few practical fundamentals to ensure a merry milestone. There’s something especially romantic about the idea of spending the holidays with a significant other: the dressing up for parties, the exchanging of thoughtful gifts, the kissing under hanging mistletoe. In theory, it’s like a scene out of a rom-com; in practice, spending the holidays with someone for the first time can be tricky to navigate. For possibly the first time in your relationship, you’re faced with work parties, family obligations, and gift giving expectations—all in the same month. While it’s natural to feel pressure to make everything about your first holiday season together perfect, the best thing you can do for yourself (and your relationship) is to keep a relaxed attitude. Here are some tips to help things go smoothly as you weather the upcoming weeks. To give or not to give. You want to be on the same page with your significant other in terms of gift giving, so discuss whether or not to exchange presents (and, if possible, how much you’ll spend) ahead of time. There’s nothing more awkward than giving him a $30 gift when he’s spent $200 or worse—nothing at all. If it’s a brand new relationship, you can opt out of gift-giving altogether and instead celebrate by splurging on a weekend together post-holidays to take time to yourselves. The plus-one. Meeting each other’s colleagues at office holiday parties can be nervewracking, but don’t calm those nerves with multiple trips to the open bar. Remember that despite the festive atmosphere and cheery music, a work party is still a professional environment, and it’s always a good idea to err on the conservative side. Keep your conversation and behavior PC! Family matters. If he’s coming home with you, give him a heads up on your family traditions so that he’s not caught by surprise when you all gather ‘round the piano to sing carols, or go out for Chinese food, or whatever quirky thing your family does to celebrate. (A forewarning about any tricky family dynamics—”My sister and mother are in a fight,” “We never talk about my uncle,” etc.—is also a good idea.) Make a list, check it twice. If your mother plans on making sure your boyfriend “has a little something under the tree, too,” let him know ahead of time so that he’s not caught unaware or empty-handed. (Vice versa, if your boyfriend plans to show up with presents for the whole family.) Leave the lingerie. If you’re spending the holidays at his place, pack family-friendly sleepwear. You never know who you’re going to run into outside the bathroom. (PAGE 37) :: After5ive.org

PDA rules. When around his family, take your physical affection cues from him. Don’t reach for his hand or kiss him around his parents until he shows that he’s comfortable with it. Pitch in. Christmas is a chaotic, busy time for the whoever’s hosting. Clear dishes, pick up wrapping paper, help hand out drinks, and do what you can; not only is it courteous, it’s also sometimes easier to break the ice with, say, his mother if you’re both doing something together—rather than just sitting in the living room. Wake up call. Don’t be the last one up! If you have to set your alarm or make your boyfriend wake you up, so be it, but make sure you don’t roll out of bed an hour after everyone else. On your own. If you do decide to spend the holidays apart, consider sending a basket of food or a few presents to each other’s families ahead of time; a nice gesture which will let everyone know you’re thinking about them and allow you to participate in each other’s holidays without being physically present.

The 25 Most Common Dream Symbols

Every dream is a story about the dreamer and is often times teaching us a lesson or showing us about who we are and why we are here and doing what we are doing. When you are interpreting your dreams it is important for you to work with your own meanings of symbols, places and people before reaching for a dictionary of dream meanings. There are a plethora of dream dictionaries available at any bookstore and online and I do not highly recommend using these dictionaries for various reasons but mainly because we personally are responsible for our own dream language. Our dream language is of the mind and each of us has a personal dream language of symbols made up from our personal histories, experiences and culture and is very complex. Many of the dream dictionaries out there are filled with old wives’ tales and superstitions and or generated from a computer program and have no collective meaning. Learning our own dream language is similar to learning a foreign language only you are the teacher as well as the student. In studying your dreams, I suggest starting your own personal dream dictionary. You can use a note book with alphabetical tabs or get an inexpensive address book and list symbols, places and people etc using the first letter in their name for easy look up. I will discuss in length how to create your own dream dictionary in another article and I teach you how to build your own dictionary in my dream interpretation classes. As in dictionaries for a particular language, there are some words that can be used for various meanings. There are also basic words and symbols in all languages that are understood collectively as to their meaning. The same goes for dream language. There are basic symbols which are understood by all of our minds as to their meaning. Created from my research and dream interpretation counseling I have put this common symbols list together.

Below is a list of 25 common symbols and their collective meaning, listed in alphabetical order 25 Common Dream Symbols and their Meanings 1. Animals in general represent habits, urges, instincts and aspects we attribute to them which are found in ourselves. Animals in your dreams are further explained here. 2. Baby is a new idea, new concept or ideal - something you have just given birth to, a responsibility you have accepted. It is your “baby” personal project “thing” to do. 3. Clothing shows our attitude and Self-expression. Things we “put on”. Clothing is the part of the Self that we show others, what we allow or want others to see. The Self is described in some cultures as the part we show to others; the part we believe we are, the parts we play and the part we truly are. 4. Death means change. It means the end of something: an idea, relationship, habit, etc. and on to something else. Death is nothing more than a transition because physical life, by nature, is a temporary existence for the soul. Death is a change from one state of being to another. 5. Tests and/or Examinations are about knowing the truth. This has to do with self-esteem and confidence or lack of it. Being prepared or not, making the grade or not, measuring up to other people’s expectations or fear of not being good enough. The most important test of our lives is knowing our own goals, standards, hopes and wishes – being crystal clear about what you want in life and standing up for what you believe. For further insight into the area where you feel you are being tested in, look at what the test was on in your dream. 6. Falling is basically just waking back up – the action of returning to consciousness. The old wives tale that if you fall in your dream and hit the ground, you will die, IS NOT TRUE. If you hit the ground in the dream, you will bounce right back and the dream will continue… falling at this point would have the meaning of “falling from grace” or “fall on your face” – embarrassment. 7. Food is knowledge. The saying “food for thought” comes from the idea that knowledge feeds the mind and soul just as physical food feeds and nourishes the physical body. Pay attention to what you are “feeding” yourself. 8. Games are the dreamer’s perspective of life. “Game of Life” or we can say the “games people play” and how they play them. Games have to do with learning skills, rules, talents, showmanship, training, practice, winning or losing, teamwork or solo performance. Particular games have different meaning to different people, depending on whether they do this for work or fun. A particular game interpretation will depend on your feelings and associations with it. 9. Hair represents outward conscious thoughts and feelings/sensitivity. Messy hair would mean mixed up thoughts, confused, can’t think straight. (PAGE 39) :: After5ive.org

10. Hands mean service, giving or receiving and expression of emotion. Also how you “handle” things or having/giving a hand in a situation. 11. House represents your mind. The floors in the house represent different levels of thinking. The mind is made up of three major parts: the conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the super-conscious mind. Within these three parts are seven levels of consciousness. The house is where you stay/live – your belief system. 12. Killing indicates change. Killing of yourself indicates a part of yourself and is a good thing when it is an undesirable trait, but a warning if the trait is a good quality. Killing of an animal is the killing of a habit that that animal or its qualities may represent to you. Killing can also be viewed as an expression, such as the death of a relationship or job. 13. Marriage symbolizes commitment between the conscious and subconscious minds for fulfillment of a desire. It symbolizes a new beginning or something you are “married” to until you “divorce” yourself from it by taking positive action. 14. Money symbolizes exchange value and worth. Things of value would be a new talent you weren’t aware you had, a new quality or gift within you. It could also represent a new vision or new understanding of something. Look at how you are receiving money/valuables to interpret how you feel about yourself. 15. Mountain is a challenge or obstacle. Depending on your mind set, you may see a mountain representation of something that you feel is an overwhelming obstacle, or you may view it positively as a great challenge you are ready to take on. A mountain can represent your life, your job and task you’re involved in, a project or a goal. 16. Naked represents honesty and openness. You are showing your true Self. How are you feeling about being naked in the dream- exposed/vulnerable, embarrassed, or content? 17. People. All people represent aspects or personality of the Self. These are characters in the dream – parts of you, some you know and some you don’t know. Some you don’t like and some you love. The successful businessman, the glamour girl, the bag lady, the playboy, the thief, the idiot, the comic, friends, relatives are all parts of our Self. We are made up of many people. As in Shakespeare’s words, “All the world’s a stage and we are merely the players.” Our dreams are our inner stage and we are everything and every character. 18. Radio/Television represents mind-to-mind communication. Telepathy is the sending and receiving of thoughts. A radio/TV is receiving and a radio/TV station is broadcasting, sending out thoughts. 19. Roads symbolize your direction in life. The direction of your life is determined by your desires and goals. There are highways, streets, roads, dead-end streets, bumpy roads, smooth roads, etc. You can make a right turn, a U-turn or a left turn (not right or unpredictable). 20. School is a place for learning. This can be your level of learning or school of thought. What grade level you are attending in the dream is an indication as to what level you are operating in a particular situation. 21. Sex symbolizes unification of opposites, oneness, marriage, a creative act, a longing to be whole. It can also represent fear or power depending on your feelings about the dream when you awoke. 22. Teacher/Guide is your higher Self. This is your source of knowledge. The soul holds the complete plan for its maturity and its desires and goals here in this lifetime and all others before and after this lifetime. 23. Teeth represent assimilation of knowledge so it can be used. Teeth are the first part of the physical digestive system, and teeth in a dream mean assimilation of knowledge. Losing teeth, which is a common dream, means a change in the way you take things in or learn. 24. Vehicles are means of conveyance from one place to another. The soul uses the body as a vehicle much the same way – going in and out at will. In general, vehicles represent lifestyles, such as work, play, independence, sporty, fast, luxury, economic. Different cars represent these different lifestyles. Your own car generally represents your own body so pay attention to how your car is in your dream. For example, having a flat tire on your car indicates you have gone flat, lost your enthusiasm and energy. 25. Water is the source of all life. It represents conscious life experiences. These are our everyday, physical, waking interactions, situations, and circumstances that arise and bring opportunity for growth and enrichment. Water can also represent emotions and feelings overall.

LOL!

“A well-rounded and charismatic performer”. “ Full-on doubled-up, gasping-for-oxygen hilarious”. Sam Butler, El Paso’s hilarious and fearless new face of stand-up! It is his magnificent, unbounded confidence that clearly demonstrate his natural gift for laughs. The maestro of feel good comedy will definitely have everyone rocking back and forth in their seats, some choking back tears of an exquisitely crafted performance. Sam Butler’s original brand of high-energy intelligent lunacy ensures that there are no other comedians like him. Check out what he had to say on what keeps him jaw-dropping funny.

Three words that describe you? Persistent, Insistent, Driven

Name your amazing talents. I make a lot of funny faces, mostly at my kids school. They love me!

The best gig you’ve had so far? Refried Fridays at the World famous Hollywood Improv. I’ve done it twice! That stage is the biggest honor in comedy. The show “A night at the Improv” was filmed there and all of the greats in stand-up have performed there. George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Andy Kauffman.

How comedy started for you? I was married for 16 years officially, but in my 13th year of marriage I discovered my wife (now ex-wife) was having an affair and I found all my hard work as a family man wasflushed down the toilet. I found myself with no hobbies, no single friends, no night life.. so I did some soul searching and decided to do something that I always wanted to do, ever since I was a kid I wanted to do Stand-up. Started at open mics with Sun City Comedy. Eventually I was booked as an opener at paying shows then I hosted every show I could for over a year. Soon after I auditioned at the El Paso Comic Strip and was invited back to host a whole week. Later I was invited to host about once a month or every two months and I did that for about a year. Earlier this year I was invited to become a producer for The Refried Comedy Show out of Hollywood which is now going to become a national franchise. It’s all surreal. I couldn’t do it alone, I had lots of help along the way. A big thanks to my fellow comics Gibran Saad, Alexs Roman, Israel Garcia (locally) and Brian Scolaro from New York for teaching me the basics, Luke Torres for opening doors in LA with all the promoters as well as being a friend. To Bart Reed for providing a real comedy club to work in EP. To Sebastian Cetina for always giving me a stage in LA. Last but not least Team Refried in Hollywood, Manny Saldivar and Richard Villa, the hardest working comic in Hollywood!

What would you be doing if not comedy? I would be managing professional cage fighters and boxers. I was managing El Paso’s own Oscar De La Parra up until he got injured and we had to take some time off. He just had his first fight last month since the injury and came out with the big W! Looks like I may be back soon. (PAGE 41) :: After5ive.org

r o y d e m SAM BUTLER o t C Bus

Name three things you would want with you on a deserted island? My first reaction was my kids and GF.. then I thought about it. It would be a rifle a sailboat and ammo.

Most embarrassing moment. Did a face plant getting on stage in a crowded bar one time. Then I got up and did my set.

Do you think that comedic abilities can be learned? Yes! It’s more than being funny... and like everything especially at a professional level, it takes practice and dedication. We have open mics almost every night now in EP which is something I have been pushing for, especially after working in LA with professional Comics who try new material there and people who want to learn can. When I first started there were two open mics a month and four paying shows... and 25 comedians.. very little stage time. Stage time is worth its weight in gold. So much so I even started singing Karaoke to get a little extra stage time.. I’m a horrible singer.

Perfect date... I had a perfect date recently on Oct.12, 2012. It was my first date with my now GF. Vicky.. We had dinner on Ft. Bliss at Shamrocks Irish pub and had some drinks and went for a stroll at Freedom Crossing and talked about us.. it was fantastic!

Your biggest inspiration... For me is the moon landing.. I always think if they can put a man on the moon.. then there is really nothing I can’t accomplish! That helps me persevere!

If today was your last day to be alive... I would say my goodbyes and spend the day at Disneyland with my girls and my GF and anybody that would wanna join me. I would say a prayer thanking God for all the time he did grant me.

Your best advice? Never allow your emotions to control your decisions.

Your favorite comedian? Is really hard but I would have to say, Bill Cosby.

What are you working on right now? I’m producing a show for Refried Comedy in EL Paso. We’re Bringing two Hollywood headliners for three nights to EP Jan. 17-19 Richard Villa and Christopher “Kid” Reid from Kid n Play. I will keep y’all posted! After5ive.org :: (PAGE 42)

HOW TO LOSE A GUY (OR GIRL) IN 10 MINUTES By Leah De Graaf

1

Be aware of the nonverbal messages you are sending to others. Ladies, if you are gazing at someone across the bar with a smile spread across your face as you tilt your head to the side and continuously flip your hair, he/she is probably going to think you’re interested. Communication studies professor Mark Redmond says women give off approachability cues that help others identify whether a person is approachable or not. Men, however, might engage in status displays says Dawn Sweet, who holds a doctorate in communication. So guys, if you catch yourself expanding your chest to take up as much space as possible, talking in a loud voice and engaging in “showing off” behavior you might be sending the wrong signals.

2

(PAGE 43) :: After5ive.org

Show disinterest. Once you know the nonverbal hints you give off, use them to shake that guy or gal without being hurtful. Body language is everything, so avoid eye contact and keep your body turned away from your unwanted admirer. Drudge down conversation by answering questions shortly and don’t ask questions in return. Redmond, whose research focuses on interpersonal communication, says people tend to avoid offending others. “We don’t want to embarrass someone,” Redmond says. “We don’t want to make them feel bad.” Indirect strategies, like ignoring the person or subtly acting rude, protects a person’s feelings, while direct strategies tend to “threaten” an individual. One risk with the indirect strategy is that your message may not be picked up. According to Redmond, “We see what we want to see.” If that’s the case and you just can’t shake them, find an excuse to leave.

quick tips to shake those creepy drunks that never seem to get the hint.

Find help or leave. If the message is just not sticking, don’t hesitate to excuse yourself from the situation. Sit in a different seat, create distance, leave or ask for help. As a bar employee, Foss can tell when a girl is not interested in a guy, and if he were notified about a potentially dangerous situation, he would ask the male to either leave the female alone or exit the bar—don’t leave without your friends, though. “There are creeps out there,” Redmond warns. “Ultimately, it is just a matter of getting the message across clearly.”

Remain clear and concise. Don’t say one thing and do the other. For example, if a girl accepts a drink and then walks away there is a clear contradiction, and mixed messages lead to tricky situations. Foss, also a bartender and bouncer at Big Shots, says when he buys a girl a drink he expects at least a casual conversation. Similarly, if you have told someone to leave you alone, do not continue any kind of interaction. “We get into too much game playing sometimes when it comes to relationships,” says Redmond. “It would be a lot easier if [everyone] could be real frank with each other.”

Be direct, say no. Flat out tell the person you are not interested. Sometimes it is best to have a clear and strong message to get your point across. According to Redmond, among the students he has talked to the preference is to be direct and say, “I appreciate your interest, but no thank you.” You don’t want to be seen as a tease. William Foss, senior in hotel and restaurant management, says it is easier to tell a lie. “If you lie you are saving their feelings. If you tell the truth, they could get upset,” says Foss. So using the whole “I’m sorry, I am in a relationship,” may be the best route, as long as you don’t get caught.

1. What’s your real name? Alias? Hector Landeros aka Trebel1

2.

If you could open for anyone, who would it be? Tough question, but that would be Laidback Luke and Bad Boy Bill, Bill is the reason I started spinning he has incredible talent, Luke is just and awesome dj and always amazes me on how he manipulates his music and pushes the envelope.

3. How do you connect with your

audience? I connect to audience with my music of course. To see people dance to your music is something so intimate and fulfilling.

(PAGE 45) :: After5ive.org

4.

In the 10yrs you’ve been doing this, how would you say the music scene has changed for DJs? When I started djing the music everyone was playing/Listening to was HArdhouse, guess you can say we have come a long way from that. I guess my music has moved from underground to mainstream, I still can’t decide whether that’s a good or a bad thing.

5.

What kind of equipment do you work with? Here at The Bassment we use Pioneer CDJS 900(x2) and a DJM900 Nexus. Our residents and djs play out of USB drives or cds. I myself use USB drives loaded with tons of music. But can play on anything, as a young dj I started playing on turntables, and still have that skill. : )

All About Woman, Lifestyle, Sport and Activity

DJ TREBEL1

“We take pride in the music we share”.

6.

How will you describe your style? My Style can be described as Uplifting and Energetic. I mix multiple House Subgenres from Electro to progressive, and recently started adding a touch of Trap and moombahton.

7.

When you do your mixshow, what is it that you personally want your listeners to hear? I want listerners to listen to the other side of EDM, the Radio shows you the “POP” part of our scene, there is a lot more to our scene than David Guetta, Calvin Harris, and Deadmau5.

8.

How did the Bassment notion evolve and what sacrifices have you sustained in giving life to your dreams- Deejaying? The Bassment began as a simple concept to share the music we love and give local djs the opportunity to share their music with the rest of us. A lot of talent here in the Sun City unfortunately not all of us get to share that talent in clubs and venues, thats where we stepped in. Djaing is something I loved to do, but with everything sacrifices are involve maybe. One important one is not spending enough time with my family, this business is very time consuming and with a full time job, plus school , one has only so much time. But I think with time I have learned to balance all that is on my plate, now I just try to incorporate my family with my passion.

10.

Why the Bassment? Why not perform at a local venue? We wanted to provide an intimate place, an intimate gathering. Sometimes in a club or venue you cater to your crowd, when you’re on The Bassment you play what your heart desires without anyone telling you what to play.

11.

What criteria is a must-have to be on the Bassment Mixshow? Originality! Pure and simple, why would we have someone on our show that sounds the same as everyone else. Someone that isn’t afraid to play what they feel and love is something awesome.

12.

What is your reflection upon working with your wife on the Bassment Mixshow? What is her role? I love working with my wife on the show, she has help us so much and not to mention is a great host! Her role consist of hosting our live shows and booking our talent, and of course promoting.

13.

We know deejaying, working & being a family man can consume a lot of your time. How do you maintain a balanced lifestyle? This is something Im still working on.lol I guess just always making time for your family is the most important, I have a great schedule where I work, which give me weekends off, Friday is Bassment time Saturday and Sunday are for my family.

14.

How do you stay above the competition? We have come to a conclusion that we do that by being consistent. We figured If we made sure to always be on Friday 7-10 people would start watching eventually lol.

15.

Any Shout outs? To our viewers because without you kids we are nothing! To my Bassment team, thank you guys for joining me on this voyage. My wifey, thanks for always having my back! After5ive.org :: (PAGE 46)

Because the 6 Strings Bar’s happy hours are very, very expansive -- almost as expansive as its booze is inexpensive during these times. And you can often down your drinks while listening to live music -- a rarity in this part of town. The crowd reflects the folksy, friendly vibe of the music calendar: lots of bluegrass acts, country, jam bands, rock, acoustic guitarists/singers and a solid open mic night. 6 Strings Bar has morphed from a late-night post-concert fave into an allday jack-of-all-trades spot.
