ning. I have been working in strategic consultancy business for more than 12 years and now I have the possibility to transform my passion (I am a photography collector) into a job. I took this opportunity and left my career to run our family business represented by MIA Fair. We are also developing internationally MIA Fair which will be present in Singapore at Marina Bay Sides in October 2014. The challenge of my role is to organize smoothly and precisely all the many aspects related to the fair organization, from the fitting of the booth to the cultural program, from the sponsor presence to the catalogue preparation etc. In 2012 MIA Fair presented 211 solo-shows of artists coming from 16 countries worldwide, 13 conferences, 24 publisher presentations and 28 book signings, on a surface of 8,000 square meters. What can we expect this year?

LC: We feel this formula is part of our success among visitors and galleries, since it helps visitors better understand the artist’s project. In particular our format gives visitors the opportunity to encounter 180 one-man shows and to concentrate on the project of one artist at a time for a better comprehension.

LC: This edition we will present 230 exhibitors: of which 180 solo-shows of artists, an enlarged publishing sector with 45 exhibitors (publishers and bookshops) and a new area dedicated to the presentation of 6 works created jointly by the photographer and printer (4 hands projects). In particular a close relationship has developed today between these two figures, similar to the one that was established in the past between the authors and printers of engravings, and this is reflected in the decision to exhibit the photographs with both signatures. The artists come from 18 countries around the world and our cultural program consists in 10 conferences, 18 publishing presentations and 20 book signings. We have confirmed the BL BNP Paribas Award and a new award devoted to photography archives organized with Eberhard & Co (one of the most ancient Swiss Watch Maison) and the Italian Magazine IO Donna (Corriere della Sera).

How did you get involved in MIA Fair? What are the most challenging facets of this position?

What regions are in your focus? Who are the exhibitors from the Central Eastern European scene?

LC: MIA Fair has been conceived in 2011 by my father, Fabio Castelli, and I have been involved in the organization since the begin-

LC: We have exhibitors from France, UK, Germany, Austria, Greece, Spain, Hungary and Russia. From Central Eastern Europe we

Milan Image Art Fair exhibition director Lorenza Castelli informed us about the third edition of Italy’s unique fair devoted solely to photography and video art.

MIA Fair distinguishes itself in the international art fair scene for its original format: one booth for each artist. Have these oneman shows proved to be an overall success?

present from Hungary, Faur Zsófi Gallery with Gergely Szatmari and from Russia, Al Gallery with Dmitry Provotorov and Galerie Iragui + Grinberg Photo with Alexander Gronsky. this year there will be a special “corner” given to the collectors, what will it be special in? LC: The Collector’s Corner is an entire area where collectors can find exhibitors specialising in conservation, enhancement, lighting and protection of photographic works, restoration and conservation experts, framing professionals and an insurance company to cover the risks of an art collection. Also here, the collector will find a section in which MIA Fair proposes some fundamental publications for anyone looking for information on how to begin collecting. seminars, topical workshops and round tables will be organized, covering subjects that range from the history of photographic image to the market system, from the world of collecting to other experiences in curatorship and display. What are the highlights of these programs? LC: The rich cultural program envisioned promotes the cause of a well-informed artcollecting. We propose 3 talks on collecting photography, 1 on collecting books, 2 on the art market, a focus on the Dutch publishing sector and a lecture by W. M Hunt, an important collector from USA. We will also focus

on the photography archives award we organize and on the Dummy Award. In this edition, the Basement, a big central area underneath the Pavillon 4, becomes a space devoted to the world of independent and research publishers and MIA Fair 20 3 devotes an always keener attention to photobooks. What will it be like? LC: MIA Fair is investing on the publishing and photobooks sector area enlarging their presence with a new pavilion, a new exclusive conference room, a reading area and an exhibition of the Dummy Awards. The Dummy Award, organized by the Kassel Photobook Festival, is a cultural partner of MIA Fair right from the first edition. In the 2013 edition MIA Fair will be the first stage in presentation of the 50 best dummies selected over an itinerary which will include the other Dummy Award locations: Le Bal in Paris and the Photobook Festival in Kassel (Germany). In what way is your catalogue innovative? LC: The innovative catalogue is part of our formula since our first edition in 2011. MIA Fair produces for each artist a catalogue with the biography, the photographs presented at the fair and a critical text on the project. The innovative conception of the catalogue consists in the fact that the fair catalogue is conceived as real self-made book, that each visitor will assemble and enrich along the path of their visit according to their interests.

Not without some irony – a frequently encountered working tool (or weapon) for Stefan Nikolaev – “Half-Life” aims at a sculptural outcome of various social topics such as the leftovers of personal freedom in the contemporary consumption society, the primitive social importance of violence that is still legal tender in present day’s civilisation, the possible interpenetrations (or shortcuts) between the sphere of private history on one side, and

What’s on: Josip Vaništa Abolition of Retrospective Josip Vaništa (Karlovac, 1924) is one of the last major active artists of the neo-avantgarde. At the exhibition Abolition of Retrospective in Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art, more than 200 of his works, paintings, drawings, objects, installations, collages, anti-magazines, letters, movies... will be exhibited. These works testify to an extraordinary artistic personality of Josip Vaništa, and, at the same time, represent valuable documents of the visual culture, literature, philosophy and entire society of the second half of the 20th century. When: 25 April-16 June 2013 Miroslav Šutej – Retrospective Miroslav Šutej (1936-2005) has always been the artist of the paradox. Šutej embraced the hypothesis of the end of painting and enjoyed thinking about the kinds of new objects which could possibly replace traditional arts. Art critics most often associated Šutej’s work with Op Art. Fascination with movement remained his longheld obsession. Šutej was one of the few, if not the only one, who at that time dared disregard the modernist canon. When: 30 June – 22 September 2013 Opening hours: Tue–Sun 11am–6 pm, Sat 11 am–8 pm

When: 19 April- 16 June 2013 Jacob Aue Sobol – Arrivals and Departures / Moscow • Ulaanbaatar • Beijing In March 2012, Jacob Aue Sobol embarked on a train journey from Moscow to Beijing. While his street photography distinguishes itself through its artistic, expressive compositions and virtuosic grayscale expression, his portraits are characterized by a nearly painful sense of intimacy and proximity in which the boundary between the subject and observer seems to almost dissolve. Participating Artists: Martin Andersson (CH), Jana Babincová (CZ), Milan Guštar (CZ), Morgan O’Hara (US), Tom Kotik (CZ/ US), Jan Krtička (CZ), Hanne Lippard (GB), Radio Lemurie (CZ), Matěj Smrkovský (CZ), Jiří Valoch (CZ), Tomáš Vaněk (CZ), Lenka Vítková (CZ), Zimoun (CHE) The 16–20 000 Hz project presents a selection of visual and sound oriented tendencies in the Czech and international art scene. The exhibition confronts installations and objects with a diverse group of artists who, each in their own way, reflect the themes of complementarity and context of the phenomena of sound, visual image, space and time-based actions. As a metaphor, the exhibition can be perceived as an invitation to enter a sound labyrinth, built from apertures, echoes and sound interferences. The space of the gallery is intersected by different trajectories and remediation between image and sound. The exhibition presents graphical scores, textual artworks, kinetic and acoustic objects as well as interventions into the electromagnetic space and site-specific sound installations. The project is conceived as an intergenerational and inter-genre encounter. When: 11 April – 24 May 2013 Opening hours: daily 1–8 pm

An audiovisual installation exploring sounds and images as particles of reality clustered to form meta-entity with an attempt to provoke no meaning at all - only pure potentiality. Sound-installation consists of 2 systems playing in tandem. Slavek Kwi is a sound-artist, composer and researcher interested in the phenomena of perception as the fundamental determinant of relations with reality. He has a longstanding fascination with sound-environments, developing what he terms ‘electroacoustic soundpaintings’ that oscillate between sound only works and interdisciplinary works exploring social, spatial and temporal processes. Knoll Gallery

Budapest Liszt Ferenc tér 10. 1061 Budapest, Hungary www.knollgalerie.at What’s on: This is not a war – Csaba Nemes The caracteristics of the new graphical series of Csaba Nemes are humor and the surprising visual solutions. His works are montage-like, both the ones, that depict urban, public sorroundings and the ones that represent rural, personal milieu. Although all of them are figural imageries, the tools of the classical avantgard – geometrical structures and elements, reflections, short texts - are still essential in the poetical, but - at the same time - ironical scenes. The grotesque, satirical aspect of the graphics – evolving from the the proportion-changing of the figures and by juxtaposing different picture-planes – evokes literary examples and hereby social-critical aspects. Scope Participating artists: Patrick Schmierer, Tomek Baran The exhibition Scope shows the latest works of Patrick Schmierer and Tomek Baran. They focus on the question of abstract painting, searching the boundaries of image, redefining the art-object itself. The paintings of the young polish artist, Baran are free of personal expression, emotions, or what is commonly referred to as a theme. Rather laconic, they reflect an orientation towards formal investigation. Using the painting’s three basic elements, each of the artist’s works is an attempt to reinvent painting. Schmierer`s works - even though their minimalism - offer especially diverse possibilities for cultural associations but can make us smile, if we recall their silent dynamism, that they indicate such process which let us see that each painting could be an object, that each object could be an abstract painted picture. Budapest Széchenyi u. 3. 1054 Budapest, Hungary www.viltin.hu What’s on: Repechage- Kata TRANKER ‘Much banal as it may seem, but we can still wonder on what life is. Or to be correct how it is. As if I would be standing on the other side, trying to peek how the others succeed. And I note down everything I see. I want to puzzle out its framework, its logic that allows the routine. There are no big stories, only simple principles: strategies according to age and historical period. Everybody is trying to equilibrate, showing some feats and finally reaches the target – and it’s no problem if it is on repechage. In fact, the great majority won’t be winner, particularly if there is no other target than surviving. ‘ Belonging to the youngest generation of Hungarian artists, Kata TRANKER’s socially sensitive focus of interest has long been on the human nature and the boundary between appearance and reality. Her socio-historical analysis - focusing on the symbiotic relationships - results in identity questions. The installations composed of variable drawings and objects are mostly narrative, but not giving the viewer a linear plot or interpretation. The artist creates fiction based spatial systems that raise questions for the viewer and offer room for interpretation. Accordingly, the artist’s use of exhibition space is not merely a presentation of individual works but also weaves together complex stories that make each work and item an indispensable part within a larger whole. Fathoming the undulation that imposes its laws on nature: this is precisely what Eszter Csurka’s new exhibition offers. The Landscape Architect of the Year Award is a professional award that recognizes the exceptional work of a practicing landscape architect’s (or occasionally a pair or a team of architects’), work for a maximum of 5 years retrospectively. The prize is not meant to be a lifetime achievement award; instead it is a prominent recognition of a shorter, but rather intensive (productive) period. When: 26 April – 20 May 2013 Boom/Room - New Estonian Architecture /Exhibition of the Union of Estonian Architects In Estonia, the years between 2000 and 2008 were marked by vigorous eoconomic growth. The construction boom that started in the second half of the 1990s and truly gathered steam at the beginning of the 21th century quickly and thoroughly changed the appearance and atmosphere of Estonia’s cities. The exhibition of the Union of Estonian Architects focuses on the best of the contemporary architecture that has sprung up from these chaotic local conditions. The fruit of the construction boom, which had now cooled, is not just anonymous office boxes, maxi-markets and catalogue houses – there is also a great deal of architecture that is contextually responsive and deserving of attention. The lines separating photography from other branches of the visual arts have become blurred and uncertain. The boundaries within the visual culture are constantly being broken down or broken through. The aim of the exhibition being held at the Hungarian National Gallery is to show the changes experienced in Hungarian art photography in the period following the turn of the century, and to present the creative use of photography in Hungarian art. What kind of processes have been at work within photographic art, and how have universal photographic trends impacted on Hungarian artists? How has digital technology influenced contemporary art? What has the photography scene had to go through in order to achieve recognition and to sustain its deserved rank? Who can we describe as a photographic artist and who as a visual artist who utilises photography? The exhibition titled Hungarian Art Photography in the New Millennium is intended to provide an answer to the theoretical questions by showing a series from each contemporary Hungarian creator. Budapest MűPa, Komor Marcell u. 1. 1095 Budapest, Hungary www.ludwigmuseum.hu What’s on: The Naked Man Whereas the female nude has been taken for granted as a pictorial theme and popular exhibition subject for centuries, the male nude has been mostly consigned to museum depots. Many important painters, photographers, performance and video artists, both female and male, have dealt intensively with this taboo theme. The male nude, which was initially only a pictorial theme in mythological garb, became a public field of action and experimentation around 1900 as a nude selfportrait. From this point on, the crisis of the hegemonic male image in the 20th and 21st century can be illustrated with numerous works by prominent artists. Themes include the deconstruction of the hegemonic model of masculinity and the gaze of desire at the male body, as well as body cult and destruction of the body. The Male Nudes exhibition is a joint project of Lentos Art Museum, Linz, and Ludwig Museum – Contemporary Art Museum, Budapest. When: 21 March – 30 June 2013

Ősz Gábor Light as a physical phenomenon and the basis for the technique of film and photography plays an important part in Gábor Ősz’s art and an experimental, conceptual tinge accompanies his works. His beloved picture composing device is the camera obscura, or pinhole camera. He used this technique in his series titled Liquid Horizon and Prora Project as well, where he transformed WW2 bunkers and a colossal building-complex’s identical rooms into a camera obscura so that it is the building itself taking the pictures with a several hours long exposure. The works moving on borderfields of various image making techniques (painting, film, photography) look into such exciting technical and visual questions as the operation of image structure or the tension triggered by the encounter of light and objects. Ludwig Museum presents Gábor Ősz’s solo show as part of its series featuring Hungarian artists and artists of Hungarian origin whose works are less known in their native country. This exhibition has been realised in cooperation with Netwerk, centre for contemporary art, Aalst, Belgium. When: 26 July – 3 November 2013 Opening hours: Tue 10 am – 8 pm, Wed–Sun 10 am – 6 pm

The title of the exhibition is rooted in VALIE EXPORT’S installation work Fragmente der Bilder einer Berührung [Fragments of Images of Contingence] of 1994, in which poleand wire-hung light bulbs are rhythmically immersed into cylinders filled with milk, used oil, or water. These liquids are fundamental sources of our existence. At the same time, their physical fusion with electricity implies a life-threatening danger – a contradictory, yet also mutually conditioned state of joining and repelling. The rhythmic movement in this work is repeated in a second installation of the exhibition, Die un-endliche/-ähnliche Melodie der Stränge [The un-ending/-ique melody of cords] of 1998, a recording of a threadless sewing machine and its sound. It is at this threshold between alchemy and mimesis that Farcas’s last series of works is negotiated. Characterized by an elevated degree of magic, the central theme of this series is light. She uses light as an instrument of ritual that dazzles the viewer with reflections in the actual play of light, reinforcing the significance of artworks as visual vehicles charged with communicational energy. She casts light into the frantic speed of exchanges between humans, among each other and with their environment. When: 11 April – 17 May 2013 Opening hours: Tue–Fri 3 pm – 8pm Sat-Sun by appointment

The geometrical abstract paintings of the italian artist will be presented next a performance. Opening: 24 April 2013 Berszán Zsolt, Veres Szabolcs, Betuker István (Berlin) The three artists will present their work for the public in Berlin. Berszán Zsolt’s work is an approach for the dark black of death. A sensed atmosphere, vaguely prefigured through Betuker István’s imagery, while in Veres Szabolcs’ paintings, the atmosphere is striking, with the copious violence of a macabre portraiture. Opening: 19 July, 2013 Sasa Bandi; Bazis (Berlin) The ironically expressive drawings and paintings of the young artist Bandi Sasa has a critical perspective. His work will be exhibited in the exhibition space in Berlin, after his residency there, where his work can experiment new ideas and themes. Both artists share two concerns: the problem inherent to sculpture of animating an inanimate object, and trying to impose the artist’s will on something that is stubbornly three dimensional and therefore already a ’ready made’ be it stone, wood or a man made material. Whatever its nature, the object is essentially ’found’ by the artist already imbued with its own character; hence the ’obdurate’ object. The ’idiot cousin’ is a playful reference to the humour that is present in both Woolner and Olariu’s practices, infusing the character of their practices in distinctly different ways. What’s on: signs of the city, 1971–2012 – Bálint Szombathy “Starting in 1971, Bálint Szombathy’s exploration of urban visual semiotics has belonged to the artist’s major fields of interests over the course of a career that has, in both linguistic and ideological terms, embraced a wide range of activities and mediums. Inspired by the novel linguistic approaches of a momentous era and considering the implications of contemporary structuralist and semiological research, Szombathy sought to locate his visual arts activities outside the enclosed spaces of studios and exhibition venues, i.e. in outdoor public space. Such a decision was also in line with the actions that he had been performing in urban or natural environments. Never having concerned himself with the practice of painting or sculpture, the artist took note of spontaneous linguistic phenomena, visual sign formations left by anonymous authors in the urban sphere of life, that fully met his expectations of painting and sculpture and which, on being photographed, could be accepted by the artist, as well as others, as his own work.” Karen Eliot Preface, szombathy – signs of the city, 1971–2012 When: from 8th June- till 7th July Natural frequencies – Attila Pokorny “These marks and traces, which I leave them in the space, landscape and on some surfaces with certain interventions, which are the result of collaboration with nature, are important to me. My range of interests is about unrepeatable gestures, about memory, about the impact of the time on my works, about various interventions, such as references. There are important to me the space of creations and the relations with the lived space as living space, and at the same time with the cultural space as well. Taken from Essence of my works by Attila Pokorny” When: 12 July – 4 August Opening hours: Tue–Sun 11 am – 7 pm

And that is obvious since the nature is beyond the image. Lucian’s photos are not a naturalistic elegy, as they are not documentary images. Let’s Talk about Cars exhibition comprises a conceptual ambiguity with regard to the artist’s intention, consisting of the symbolic analogy between the two existential notions of death and purification, which creates an interval that gives Dan Beudean the possibility to maneuver the thoughts spaced between a painful, definitive farewell and a hopeful, conceivable see you again. Kalinka works with different kind of media, such as photography, performance and video. He also uses found objects, normally made for the everyday use and customizes them, transforming them in stand-alone installations, which often combine video and audio devices. His themes are mainly related to our society, described using physical actions, symbols and words. With great humour and irony he refers to social and political issues. Hereby he focuses on the misery of a world that man continues to destroy and rebuild. When: 19 April – 1 June 2013

Dmitry Shorin dedicated his new project «The Private space» to this impact of IT innovations on people’s lives. He says: «The private space is when I get into my car, light the engine- and drove off. I stay alone with myself in an enclosed space, turn on the music and drive slowly along the avenues in my little house made of glass, plastic, leather and wheels. This rare atmosphere of comfort and safety makes me feel cozy and happy. You will find me quickly: iPhone in my pocket will mark on Facebook a place and precise time of my lunch while Cobra navigation will report the coordinates of each parking on the globe. There is no sense in calling you to tell that I will be soon. You will already known when the lights of my Toyota go out in our backyard”. (Irina Filatova) When: 15 May – 20 June 2013

Grammatical structure of Russian language is ruthless to female creativity the notion of ’a female artist’ sometimes is enough to demonstrate the derogatory attitude. Real art does not have any gender. The project participants have set themselves plastic and semantic tasks, which go beyond the gender problem. The inner world determines a creativity degree, and it is exactly the artist’s inner beauty that the exhibition «Beautiful» is devoted to. Participants: Polina Borisova, Vita Buivid, Kimiko Yoshida, Liudmila Konstantinova, Olga Kroitor, Maria Kulikovskaya, Ksenia Pasura, Veronika Rudyeva-Ryazantseva, Alena Tereshko and also the installation with “Nude on a sofa” by Tamara de Lempicka. Ossif creates compositions consisting of several elements: sometimes dominant color areas are cut by sharp lines of different colors, or there are bended lines crossing the area of a painting, sometimes crossing the limit of a frame… He uses circle, too, as a link between different lines, a sort of roundabout where he identifies the correct new direction for his brush as if it were “ an arrow in the map” indicating a future direction and travel for new visual experience. Sometimes he places a circle in the very center of a painting, attracting the attention to a specific point with a strong “genius loci”. When: 5 April–18 May 2013 Opening hours: Tue–Sat 3 pm – 7pm

What’s on: Gerard Rancinan – Trilogy of Moderns+Chaos. The Trilogy of the Moderns is a Revolution in three acts. Between comedy and tragedy, it paints a picture of a confused humanity, blindly groping in the darkness, guided by an absolute desire for generalised happiness. As committed witnesses of the metamorphoses affecting society, the photographer, Gérard Rancinan, and the writer, Caroline Gaudriault, entertain an ongoing dialogue, delivering, each in their own medium, their observations on humanity in its mad progress. In this world premiere, they unveil, after seven years of work, their trilogy in its entirety. When: 18 May – 1 September 2013 Opening hours: 11am- 7 pm 69

In Evidence Locker Jill Magid engaged Citywatch, Liverpool’s closed-circuit video surveillance system. Her strategy for gaining access made use of an exception to the law that all footage is erased after 31 days: if a person sends a request form describing who they are, where they were, and what they were doing (along with a photo and ten pounds), the police must store the footage in the evidence locker for seven years. Magid made such a request for 31 days straight, in the manner of love letters and diary entries. The sale became an opportunity for official recognition of a conceptual paradox, which would otherwise be difficult to accept, for instance, solely on the basis of simple artistic expression. Namely, this is not only a work of art, authenticated and officially sold as such to a collector; at the same time, this is also an identity document that belongs to artist Janez Janša and is valid until 2017. It’s quite difficult to pick some usual terms to describe the genre of the author’s works. Collage, photo-manipulation, photo design rather are only the technical features of Kassandra’s approach, that allow her to create uncommon and even surrealistic world, perceived by spectator intuitively, on emotional level. Kassandra’s works are sometimes compared with those of Dali, speaking of the complexity of artistic figures and great number of perception layers, though it is definitely an original artistic language and absolutely unpredictable “another reality”. The language of paints, used by Yuri Ermolenko, to convey the ideas of his new project, titled “May there always be my mother, may there always be me”, is truly poetical, vivid and absolutely clear for everyone. The ideas of the artist have the same features, as far as the cornerstone of the project is the archetype of a mother and a child. In other words, Ermolenko uses the logic of “a double linkage”: all in the same breath he depicts not only images per se – on the canvases, but also the schemes of the images – psychological preconditions of the images themselves. These are reflections on what reality is and on William S. Burroughs novel “Naked Lunch”. Paintings and collages are trying to confuse the viewer, turning the pursuit of reality into psychedelic absurdity. And the only key that the author provides is the symbol of a fish: “In a Greenland I observed the local people. I noticed that they didn’t live, but existed on the coast, until they saw a shoal of fish entering the bay. Then they began to live. In the South – the same: local are waiting to fish all the time. The North and the South are united by one thing. Fish that gives people life.” When: 24 April – 24 May 2013 Noir – Oleksandr Korol When: 25 April – 8 June 2013
