MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER

DIGGERS AND DOZERS AND CEMENT TRUCKS…OH MY! The other day, I was driving back to Harrisburg after an event in downtown Sioux Falls. It was a beautiful spring day and my mind started to wander. Then something caught my attention. Driving down Cliff Avenue, the land on both sides of the road was aflutter with movement and I suddenly felt like I was in the middle of a construction sandwich—either that or the wildest dream of every little boy.

There were diggers (the equipment, not the taxidermist/ mayor) and bulldozers and cement trucks and earth movers and all kinds of construction equipment busy at work, turning what used to be corn fields which separated our town into future locations of clinics and retail spaces that will fill in the gaps between our neighborhoods. It struck me that all of us — not just those fascinated with construction equipment — are really fortunate to be living in a community with so much growth. Sure, there are and will be growing pains associated with this rapid development, but just about any small town would love to have our “problems” instead of trying to figure out how to attract or keep people and businesses in their communities.

That said, we do need to be proactive in our strategy and management of growth. That’s why I’m excited to share with you that the Harrisburg Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) is taking a leadership role in addressing our future. For the past few months, we’ve been partnering with a firm that specializes in assessing community needs and then getting feedback directly from community stakeholders about the proposed plan.

This same firm has successfully led efforts in Hartford, Watertown, Yankton, Madison, and other communities across the nation, and it is also the engine behind Forward Sioux Falls. The HEDC board of directors took the initiative to bring together leaders from the city, school district, and community foundation to get this study off the ground, and more than 50 confidential, individual interviews were held with community leaders, including elected officials, business owners, and many others. We are excited to learn what these stakeholders had to say about proposed future developments, and we will take that information forward as we move into the next phase. More to come!

In the meantime, we want to invite you to join us for a few summertime traditions with the Chamber of Commerce. First, join us for the Business Expo and Craft Fair during Harrisburg Days. The tent will be up, and our chamber members will be waiting to meet you. There are sure to be plenty of giveaways and promotions from our members, but there will also be an opportunity to do some

shopping with local craft vendors. The Expo runs from noon – 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12.

Secondly, get your team (or yourself) registered for the Harrisburg Hack Attack, our chamber-sponsored golf tournament. We’ll tee off on Friday, Aug. 20, at Spring Creek Country Club, and you won’t want to miss the fun. Golfing skills are not required, but a willingness to have a good time is! COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER For some reason, the spring season always puts me in a reflective state. I am not sure why; maybe it is the excitement of seeing green on the trees and no more snow on the ground, or maybe it is getting the chance to watch my kids participate in some of the activities I enjoyed most while growing up. When I think back on my time growing up in Wilmot, the thing that sticks out to me most is the excitement I had as a child for the annual Harvest Fest.

The Harvest Fest was an event our town put on in the summer. I remember it was something I looked forward to every year. Even though these were the same people I would see almost every day at baseball practice or riding my bike around town, there was something magical about the event.

Some of the fondest memories I have from summer come from time spent at the Harvest Fest.

I remember helping my mom at the concessions stand during the annual softball tournament and participating in the coin hunt in the sand box. But no memory is greater than when I won the annual bike race. I remember taking my chrome Huffy bike to the race and having “Taking Care of Business” by BTO in my mind as the race began. But nothing will compare to seeing how proud my parents were when I crossed the finish line.

After a year off, it is going to be a blast to bring everyone together and showcase the tremendous growth we have seen our Mayor Derick Wenck city undergo. This year’s celebration promises to be one of the best yet! There are some fun new activities and there are the classics which everyone loves. I wish I still had my chrome Huffy to race, but I will settle for the memories for now. My wish for families is to create some of your own fond memories together during Harrisburg Days. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you!

At that age, I did not realize how special it was for a whole community to come together and celebrate. Looking back now, I can see why my parents loved coming to the Harvest Fest. They got to see the smiles never leave our faces, they got to see their friends and family, they got to enjoy the company of everyone in the area in a relaxed setting, and more than anything, they got the opportunity to spend a weekend and celebrate our town – its history and future – together as one community.

I am now the same age as my parents when they would take me to the Harvest Fest, and I can say with absolute certainty I understand how special community celebrations are. I understand the importance of celebrating our city’s successes and looking at our past and future. After we had to cancel last year’s celebration, it felt like a big piece of my life was missing. I missed seeing the smiles on my kids’ faces as they rode the Ferris wheel, I missed seeing the immaculate condition of all the cars in the auto show, I missed the excitement from the live music, and more than anything, I missed seeing everyone in the community coming together to celebrate.

HARRISBURG DAYS 2021: BETTER THAN EVER

By Kevin Fitzgibbons, Community Development Director Harrisburg Days is back! After taking last year off due to the pandemic, we are looking forward to bringing our community together to celebrate the incredible growth of our city.

Harrisburg Days starts on Thursday, June 10th at 6 p.m. with a preview of Mac’s Carnival just west of Liberty Elementary school on Columbia Street. Great rides and carnival games will be available until 10 p.m.

Friday, June 11th will be the official kick-off to the Harrisburg Days celebration. Starting at 5 p.m., families can enjoy Mac’s Carnival. Food vendors and a beer garden will be available. Don’t forget to check out the Little Miss Pageant before capping off the night with energetic music from Ledfoot.

Saturday’s festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. with the “Walk/Run For Their Lives” charity event. Proceeds will be split between Lach’s Legacy to support the fight against SIDS and the City of Harrisburg community enhancement fund. Each participant will receive a goody bag. Register early to get a t-shirt. Packet pick up will be at the new race location, the Harrisburg High School from 4-7 p.m. on Friday night.

After you have finished the race, check out the Harrisburg

Lions Club’s Community Pancake Feed at Liberty Elementary School. From 8-11 a.m., enjoy “all-you-can-eat” for a good-will donation (suggested amount is $5 per person). Once you have had your fill of those delicious pancakes, claim your spot on the route of the Community Parade (see map on page 12).

Kids will love the new “Touch A Truck” and “One-Day-Play” events at South Middle School. Then head back to Liberty Elementary School to see the auto show and peruse the goods at the Craft Fair and thank all the people at the Business Expo who kept Harrisburg going during the pandemic.

Summer isn’t summer without some friendly competition!

The American Legion will host a Cornhole Tournament this year.

Another option is the Harrisburg Days Disc Golf Tournament sponsored by the City of Harrisburg Parks Board. The Dakota Kids Tractor Pedal Pull is back for the younger crowd.

Midwest All Pro Wrestling will provide electrifying entertainment on Saturday. The band Too Drunk To Fish will play and The Johnny Holm Band will cap off the night’s festivities.

End the Harrisburg Days celebration with the Kids Fishing Derby on Sunday. Enjoy this year’s community celebration as it is sure to be one of the best Harrisburg Days on record!

On June 1, 2021, residents of the Harrisburg School District will decide whether to approve a bond for 1) a new middle school needed to address current overcrowding and serve increasingly larger classes at the lower grade levels, and 2) the construction of a freshman academy, the first phase in a two-phase project, to address overcrowding at the high school, which will reach capacity in the next three years. Once the high school population reaches 2,200-2,400 students, the freshman academy will be expanded to a second full 9-12 high school.

When this year's middle schoolers reach the secondary level in 2023, the high school will be over capacity.

Why Not Build a Second 9-12 High School Now? TIMING IS EVERYTHING.

Building a second complete high school for 9-12 grade students now would result in higher taxes.

By the time a second full high school is needed, additional bonds are expected to be paid off, and continued growth in taxable valuation would allow additional facilities to be added without having to raise taxes.

If the current high school population was split in half, academic offerings and extracurricular activities would likely take a step backward. It would be more difficult to compete with larger AA schools.

The design of the high school facility would allow for future growth, when needed, to ensure we can accommodate our students' needs now and in the future without having to increase taxes by building too much too soon.

HHS SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

ZOE DONELAN Zoe is the daughter of Wendy and Dr. Craig Donelan of Sioux Falls.

HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS I played varsity tennis from seventh to ninth grade but stopped to focus on academics. Alongside academics, I have invested my time into building up my visual art skills and expanding my artistic reach. Last year, I qualified for the 2020 State Art Competition (cancelled due to COVID-19). This year, two of my pieces were exhibited at the 2021 State Art Competition, and one of my pieces was displayed at the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana University.

I have also volunteer-tutored a few younger students in the district since my freshman year and have even had the opportunity to host Zoom painting classes for senior citizens.

Additionally, for the last two years, I have been on the quiz bowl team (we won second place overall this season) and I have been a part of the National Honor Society. This year, I participated in HOSA for the first year. My team won second place in the Medical Innovations event, in which we designed a nanoparticle with the theoretical capability of effectively killing brain cancer. In school, I primarily enjoy science and art, however, this year I also took a liking to Calculus.

GREATEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE The most influential mentor in my life has been my mom.

She is the most courageous and outgoing person I know, all while maintaining a positive attitude and perfect hair. She was the one who began by helping me read and do math when I was one year old, and has since taught me to be a strong, independent leader in every aspect of my life. Despite her small

stature, she stands impossibly tall against anyone or anything that tries to undermine her abilities or stop her from achieving her goals. Not even a brain tumor could keep her from walking laps in the neuro acute floor or making sure my brothers had done their homework. Everything from her attitude to her work ethic is inspiring, and I hope to grow into a person just like her.

FAVORITE HIGH SCHOOL MEMORY Some of my favorite high school memories are from my time on the tennis team. My favorite part of the season was always just getting to spend time with my teammates on outof-town tournaments or just during downtime. We all became very close during the season, and I loved being part of such a great family.

FUTURE PLANS I will be attending University of South Dakota as an Alumni Student Scholar Program scholarship recipient. I have been extended conditional acceptance into the USD School of Medicine. As an undergraduate, I will major in either biology or neuroscience, and eventually become a physician after completing medical school at USD. Along with that, I will continue to grow as an artist and one day, turn my art into a small business.

GREATEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE The person who had the most impact on me as an individual would be my dad, Bill Allen. He has always been more than supportive, no matter what. Not only has he supported my athletics, but he also stressed the importance of education, a good work ethic, and strong character. When it comes to sports, he never pushed me too hard, but he always made sure I was committed and bought in to whatever sport I was currently interested in the most. At home, he always strives to provide anything that my sister and I need to become successful adults. Without my dad’s support, kindness, and overall love, I am not sure I would be where I am today. I owe a lot of thanks to him and everything he has done for me in my lifetime.

FAVORITE MEMORY FROM HIGH SCHOOL My favorite memory from high school would have to be my senior and junior years on the golf team. Not only did I grow closer to the other upperclassmen on the team, but I was able to mentor and aid in developing the passion of the younger golfers on the team as well.

After an entire season, it was cool to see the growth in not only their passion for golf but their character as well. It was very memorable and special to me realizing that I had made an impact on the future of Harrisburg golf by simply becoming a leader and being myself.

My biggest influence and role models are definitely my parents.

They both encourage me to do my best and I always want to make them proud. I look up to them because they both worked very hard to become what they are today. They have had their down times, but no matter what they would always see the bright side and work hard to get moving and back to the top. They always make my siblings and I feel like we are on top of the world through the hard times, which I admire.

FAVORITE MEMORY FROM HIGH SCHOOL My favorite memory would have to be when I got to do a debate while I was in Jordan for my history class. The debate was the American government versus the British government. It was between me and student from London and the debate was a surprise. We did not know we were doing a debate even though it went on for the whole class period and in the end I won.

FUTURE PLANS I currently work at Truks-n-Trykes Nursery Care, a job I absolutely love. I will continue working there for full-time in the summer. I am going to Augustana University next fall on scholarships. I hope to major in biology and minor in psychology and continue on to medical school to specialize in pediatrics. I also hope to travel the world with my family.

EMPATHY AND LEARNING DIFFERENTLY ARE SUPERPOWERS FOR ‘COLT THE COURAGEOUS’

By Bob Fitch Any fan of the superhero genre knows the great ones – such as Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Hulk – come alive by turning a stroke of bad luck into something incredible. Just ask Tony Stark, Peter Parker or Bruce Banner.

Or ask Colt Davidson.

Colt Davidson is a mild-mannered, third grade math whiz at Endeavor Elementary School. His kryptonite is dyslexia.

But, just like Peter Parker used a bite from a radioactive spider to become one of the great superheroes, Colt has used dyslexia to turn himself into “Colt The Courageous.” His story is now a page-turner written by his mom, Courtney Davidson.

When Colt was nearing kindergarten age, Courtney and her husband, Mike, believed their son was ready for school. “Vocabulary-wise and attention-wise, going to kindergarten when he was 5½ seemed like a good fit. When school started, he loved it. But he started struggling with reading. By Christmas, it was obvious he was falling behind,” Courtney said.

However, by March of his kindergarten year, he was bringing books home from school and reading them to his parents. “But when I’d grab a book from his bookshelf, he didn’t want to read it to me. He was so uncomfortable – he was sobbing,” she said.

“I took words from his schoolbooks and wrote those down on a different sheet of paper. He couldn’t recognize the words that he had just read. Breaking the words apart, he could recognize the letters and tell me what sound they each made, but he couldn’t blend the sounds into the word.” He hadn’t really been reading the school books, but instead was reciting what had been read out loud in class.

Their physician directed them to Pathways Literacy Center.

Pathways screened Colt and they started tutoring him three to four days a week. He made progress, but not enough. Pathways recommended formal testing at Scottish Rite Children’s Clinic for Speech & Language Disorders. Clinical staff there consists of University of South Dakota faculty who are ASHA certified speech language pathologists. USD graduate students provide services to children and their families under the guidance of clinical staff.

At the time, there was a six-month waiting list at Scottish Rite Children’s Clinic, but he was finally tested in January of his first grade year. The comprehensive examination showed Colt was advanced in many academic areas just like his older brother, Wyatt. But the test also confirmed he had a semisevere case of dyslexia.

As Courtney and Mike prepared to have a discussion with Colt about the dyslexia diagnosis, they searched the internet for helpful children’s books. They didn’t find much. Only two CONNECTING THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY

children’s books dealt with dyslexia head-on.

“That was when I decided to write Colt’s story – because dyslexia impacts one in five children,” said Courtney. “If it’s that common, I know there are other parents out there like Mike and me who want to read something helpful to their child; to explain to a child that ‘Yes, your brain is different, but it’s actually really cool, and it’s ok, and here’s all the great things you’re going to do.’”

Working with local illustrator Hector Curriel, Courtney wrote the book Colt The Courageous, which was published in March this year.

The story is told from Colt’s perspective, going from his struggle with letters and words to discovering how his brain was different – and that learning in a different way doesn’t mean he isn’t smart. Ultimately, having dyslexia proves to be his superpower because it makes him unique and allows him to empathize with others who learn differently.

It’s a common misconception that dyslexia is simply letter-reversal.

While that is one component, there is more to it. “For Colt, it is more of a language disorder, such as he couldn’t blend all the different sounds together.”

People with dyslexia will always have dyslexia, Courtney said.

“They just learn strategies to read and cope. It’s different with everybody. When you look at a classroom of 20 kids, statistics say four of those students could have dyslexia or have dyslexic tendencies.”

Techniques used to teach reading to children with dyslexia can also aid other students who struggle to read.

Because Colt has had consistent intervention since the diagnosis, he improved seven reading levels in the first six months of this school year. Now in third grade, Colt is on an IEP (individualized education plan), but is also in the district’s advanced program because of his strong math skills and his exceptional growth in reading. Wyatt is also in the Harrisburg School District’s advanced program which Courtney called “amazing.”

Courtney heaped praised on Colt’s current teacher, Tara Petersen, and special education teacher, Samantha Goedken. Furthermore, she thanked Colt’s second grade teacher, Katie Peterson, and his first grade teacher, Teresa Fischer, for investing time in her son and their willingness to learn more about dyslexia.

In addition to being a mom and a newly-published author, Courtney works full-time as vice president of account service and operations at Matt Jensen Marketing. She also operates CMD Photography which specializes in photos of newborns. Mike is the manager of Sanford Wellness Center.

“What I hope for the book is that it’s a resource for parents like Mike and me. I also hope parents whose children don’t have dyslexia can read it to their child so they understand and develop empathy for their friends. Thirdly, I hope teachers read it because we talk a lot about the signs and signals we saw in Colt. A lot of time those signs can be perceived as kids who are inattentive or being defiant or kids who are not trying hard enough. Hopefully teachers might see things they’ve never thought of before.” As part of her advocacy efforts, Courtney was part of a group which lobbied for a change to

As the city of Harrisburg continues to grow, so too do the needs of the local community. To ensure those who live in and near Harrisburg can have the best quality of life, Sanford Health has announced four major projects benefiting all residents – young and old.

SANFORD HEALTH HARRISBURG CLINIC With a larger population comes a greater necessity for patient care close to home. A new Sanford Health clinic within Harrisburg city limits means community members no longer have to travel outside their neighborhood to receive expert primary and specialty care.

Construction on the Sanford Health Harrisburg Clinic broke ground in mid-March 2021. Located at the northwest corner of Cliff Avenue and Willow Street, the 16,000-squarefoot space will house up to eight physicians in varying specialties. These specialties include family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, laboratory and radiology. There will also be an attached Lewis Drug store for pharmacy needs.

Impactful learning experiences are available through summer camps at Sanford Research and hands-on activities on the Sanford PROMISE website.

High school: The high school clinical intern program at Harrisburg High School (HHS) offers students interested in a health care career the opportunity to find their place at Sanford Health. Piloted in the spring of 2019, the program helps students join Sanford Health after obtaining their certified nursing certificate (CNA) through coursework completed at HHS and other partnerships. Once CNA certified, students complete the HHS internship prep course. During the course, they apply, interview and are selected for a CNA position. They then spend 100 hours interning at Sanford Health.

Another innovative experience for high school students is Sanford MedX. This free program offers health care career exploration through facility tours, expert presentations and hands-on activities.

Lyric Oslund, a Harrisburg alumna who participated in both high school programs, said, “The opportunities and network I gained by participating in the Sanford programs opened more doors than I ever imagined. I am succeeding in my college coursework and have the clinical experiences to make assignments much more relevant. I am very thankful for all of the skills I gained while interning and learning at Sanford Health.”

American State Bank first entered the greater Sioux Falls marketplace in 2016 with one location on Phillips Avenue. Mulder said, “We did some advertising for a couple of products – rewards checking and our certificates of deposit. We became a destination because people saw our ads and said ‘I need to go find them because they’re paying good rates.’”

The success of the downtown location convinced them it was time to grow. They recently opened a new location in the heart of the Harrisburg Public Schools district at 1201 East Cliff Place, just north of the intersection of 85th Street and Cliff Avenue. “We picked this location for several different reasons. Number one, much of our existing customer base lives in Harrisburg and the southeast Sioux Falls community. Those customers needed a convenient place to bank,” Mulder said.

Originally chartered in a small northwest Iowa town as Hospers Savings Bank in 1913, the institution changed its name to American State Bank and its headquarters moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, in 1973. Consequently, the second reason for its new location: “We felt this location provided a great match – American State is a small community bank and Harrisburg is thriving, yet retains its small-town identity.”

Mulder continued, “Finally, we looked at lots up and down Cliff Avenue. Veterans Parkway is going to come right through here and this area is going to boom. We’re going to see rapid growth out here from 69th Street to Harrisburg and we wanted to be a part of it.”

Our very own Harrisburg Days is booked to feature Johnny on Saturday, June 12th from 8:30-11:30 p.m.

Harrisburg Days has featured The Johnny Holm Band before. In 2018 he rocked the town under the outdoor tent. In 2019, he shook the tent for seven-and-a-half minutes, until a thunderstorm rolled through and the remainder of the concert was cancelled. Then, in 2020, well we don’t want to remember that year. Actually, there wasn’t much going on, so we have nothing to forget.

Join me in marking the calendar for all the fun events scheduled by the 2021 Harrisburg Days Committee because it is important to celebrate this hometown event with our community friends. It is hardly a sacrifice to miss one weekend trip to the lake for a chance to high-five the neighbors you have not seen for the past 16 months.

Every neighborhood needs a theme song. My friend Cherilyn lives on Tiger Street. She tells me Johnny is a big fan of hers and that he usually takes his microphone off the stage to sing to her gang. Well that certainly is a good story, but I believe Johnny is an equal opportunity rocker so if the gang from Grand Avenue wants to get together and adopt one of Johnny’s songs, more power to them. Each concert features old songs as well as recent hits, but all of them are fun to sing along to.
