FROM THE MAYOR To talk about the present, and to dream about the future of our City of Hawarden, I think we need to start with looking at our history. From correspondence of The Journal on February 6, 1884: “Of all the numerous towns throughout northwestern Iowa and Dakota that have assumed definite shape and reality during the past year, it would be hard to find another exhibiting so great a degree of solidity, perhaps, or with a more auspicious future before it, than this little city of Hawarden.” As one looks back over the past 130+ years, you will find growth in business, industry, churches, education, health care, and manufacturing. Our community has been blessed to have citizens and leaders of the community understand the need for steady and efficient growth, and to build a town that gives it citizens opportunity for success. Today, we are a community of over 2,500 people that call Hawarden “home.” We are proud of our great health care, our schools, our churches, our city-owned utilities, our local businesses, and our long-time manufacturing companies. We find ourselves to be a diverse, close-knit community, always it seems, reaching out to help each other in times of success and need. Like many communities our size, one finds great reward in the many opportunities to volunteer and give back to others. Whether it be at the Hawarden Thrift Shop, our volunteer ambulance or fire department, Calliope Village and

the Hawarden Historical Society, or the new Prairie Woods Nature Center, a person can find “just the right fit,” and end the day feeling filled with gratitude. What about the future? I think the past tells us Hawarden will continue to thrive and grow, as it has for the past 134 years since its incorporation! Hawarden will continue to be a place that citizens are proud to call “home” and to care for each other as friends and neighbors. As Hawarden moves forward, we look forward to having others join us in our journey.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

ESTABLISHED BUSINESSES ARE THE BACKBONE OF HAWARDEN By Bob Fitch

Hawarden’s Central Avenue has undergone several major improvements including new surfacing and the addition of vintage-style street lights.

New businesses are welcome, appreciated and rightly celebrated in small-town Iowa; but long-time businesses are the backbone of a thriving community. In Hawarden, manufacturing jobs churn out products which are shipped across the region, nation and the world:

• Coilcraft produces high-performance magnetic components including RF chip inductors, power magnetics and filters.

• Hawarden Machine Inc. and For-Most Livestock Equipment produce livestock handling equipment including chutes, squeeze chutes, and head gates.

• L.G. Everist produces construction aggregates. Hawarden is one of the company’s rail transloading service sites which are focused on the safe and efficient transfer and handling of bulk products.

• Plasticology LLC is a custom plastic injection and blow molding facility.

• Superior Farms is North America’s largest processor and marketer of lamb. Dakota Treats in Hawarden is Superior Farm’s production plant for high quality dog treats.

When it’s closing time at the factory, Sportsman’s Lanes & Lounge in Hawarden has been providing fun since 1986. “This is our 35th year,” said owner Brian Engleman. “We opened up as a 8 | HAWARDEN TODAY

Missy Eilts of the Willow Tree

bowling alley and bar. Now we’re a bowling center with food and beverage for the family. We’ve adapted to what people wanted. “We’ve done lots of upgrades. We’ve got the newest automated scoring system and synthetic lanes. We’re reinvesting,” Engelman said. Missy Eilts, owner of The Willow Tree, said the connections she makes as a small town business operator are important to her. “People are getting a little tired of the city – they love the personal one-on-one connection you get in a small town. We know our customers,” she said. The Willow Tree is a boutique and gift shop in downtown Hawarden which offers everything from paper products to toys and educational entertainment to cake mixes and candy to home décor. “I love bringing unique things back to my hometown,” Eilts said. Another long-time business which isn’t standing still is Central Café. It’s known for its pie, hearty soups and sandwiches, and BIG pancakes. When Jen McVay purchased the business several years ago, she enhanced the restaurant’s traditional American menu with regular Asian entrée specials, reflecting her own Filipino heritage. McVay also expanded Central Café’s offerings by taking orders for baked goods. She sells cake, cake pops, cupcakes, pies, bars and more for

all occasions. For holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, she sells home-baked cookies with the frosting and other decorating fixings ready to go. A few doors up the street is the 75-year-old Booth Pharmacy, which has been in the same location for 65 years. Owner Matt Hummel said the strength of the medical community contributes to the company’s success. He cited the importance of Hawarden Regional Healthcare, Back to Health Chiropractic, the two physician’s offices, and the dental and vision clinics.

Jen and Chad McVay of Central Café

Hummel said the loyalty of Booth’s staff – with longtime employee tenure ranging from 12 to 40 years – contributes to the company’s success. “I think the community appreciates our service.” While it’s tempting for Hawarden to compare itself to the economic juggernauts of Sioux Center and Orange City, Hummel believes Hawarden’s business community is doing as well or better than most small cities in rural Iowa. “Our two banks are solid. If we can keep the school and the hospital strong, grow our retail sector a little bit, and keep businesses such as Hawarden Machine and Coilcraft rolling, we’ve got some good things going on in Hawarden,” he said. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The past year or so has seen exciting developments in the Hawarden business community. Several new businesses opened while new owners and new company names popped up as well. More additions and enhancements are forecast for the coming year. “Even with the global pandemic and uncertain agricultural markets, the Hawarden business community remained vibrant in 2020. We were glad to welcome some businesses to town, see new owners take over established enterprises and, just as importantly, see Hawarden’s long-time businesses demonstrate continued resilience and success,” said Larry Cope, community and economic development director for the City of Hawarden. Here’s a look at some of the new businesses and significant business upgrades recently welcomed to the Hawarden.

905 ARRANGEMENTS Kaylee Strong is making sure Hawarden area residents can continue to commemorate life’s important passages with fresh flowers. She replaced Jan McMillian’s long-time Flowers by Jan downtown with 905 Kaylee Strong Arrangements. “Knowing how long Jan was successful here and having a strong staff, I was confident it would work,” Strong said. In addition to a complete remodel of the space, she has added some home décor plus hopes to resume flower arranging classes after prom is done.

ALPHA MOTORSPORTS Nick Strong started his business by purchasing two used golf carts which he refurbished and sold. Then he bought four carts which he again refurbished and sold. His success multiplied and now he sells more than 200 a year. In 2019, he opened Alpha Motorsports in Sioux Falls and, in 2020, purchased Northside Body Shop and Big Sioux Marine from his grandfather, Sonny 14 | HAWARDEN TODAY

Strong. “This is our family shop and I wanted it to stay in the family,” Nick said. The company is a dealer for new EZ Go golf carts; refurbishes and customizes golf carts; does marine mechanics such as servicing boats; and is an auto body shop. He’s excited to serve a broader customer base from his hometown of Hawarden at 1609 Ave E.

BIG SIOUX EMBROIDERY Big Sioux Embroidery will be moving from its current location at the corner of 10th Street and Highway 12 to make room for the new building of People’s Bank. Owner Carol Hoogestraat’s long-time Hawarden business will take up residence at 1001 Central Avenue, about a block east. Big Sioux Embroidery is a promotional product distributor, specializing in customized team and workplace apparel.

CARR’S AUTO / JEFF’S RADIATOR It was a shocking day in 2019 when the landmark auto service center at 10th and Central in Hawarden burned down. However, rising from the ashes only a few yards away just south Jeff Carr of 10th Street on Avenue H, owner Jeff Carr built a new, 6,500-square-foot automotive service and tire center. Carr has been in the auto service, repair, sales and salvage business in the city since 1984. “If you want Hawarden to grow, some businesses need to expand. My son is going to mechanic school this fall and I’m hoping he’ll come back to work here,” Carr said.

GRANITE CHURCH Granite Church, affiliated with First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, is growing quickly. The contemporary worship at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday has regularly packed its temporary home at the Hawarden Community Center. The church anticipates moving to a new location in spring 2021 at 400 Tenth Street. Like the Community Center, the new location will also be a non-traditional setting.

GYPSY SOUL

RIVER’S EDGE BANK

Gypsy Soul at 907 Central Avenue sells a wide variety of women’s clothing from size small to 3x; and accessories such as shoes, jewelry, hats, lotions and perfumes. Owner Joyce Boyer also offers Mirabella makeup and skin care lines from Clinical Care and Bio-Elements.

In 2020, River’s Edge Bank introduced Hawarden’s first drive-thru ATM which is located on the northeast corner of Highways 10 and 12.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Siouxland Habitat for Humanity is planning to build its first single-family home in Hawarden in 2021. For more information, call 712-255-6244.

HEARTLAND APPLIANCE Retail retirements often cause gaping holes on small town main streets. But Hawarden avoided that dilemma on the south end of Central Avenue when Rob Van Egdom purchased the appliance business long run by his uncle, Harlan Van Egdom. Re-named Rob Van Egdom as Heartland Appliance & Repair, Rob is building on the brand of his George-based business, Heartland Hardware. He’s expanded the inventory and added appliance repair. Rob said, “Both sides of my family have deep roots in Hawarden, making it a logical addition to the business.”

ROOSTER’S MIDWEST STEAKHOUSE Owners Todd and Anna Krug are not only satisfying the hunger pangs of evening diners, but they’ve also filled a frequently empty storefront on the south end of Hawarden’s Central Avenue. Rooster’s Midwest Steakhouse is open Wednesday through Saturday evenings and features a full bar and a menu which includes beef, pork, chicken, seafood, pasta and burgers. There’s also a full appetizer menu and desserts.

SHOWROOM SWEETS Showroom Sweets plans to open as a small takeout bakery in spring 2021 in a former auto showroom next door to Quick Corner on Highway 10. Owner Ashley Noble said, “We’ll have fresh baked bread, pie and custom cakes; and I’ll have cookies and cupcakes; and coffee with breakfast food such as turnovers, danish, donuts and cinnamon rolls in the morning.” Showroom Suites plans to be open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and some Saturdays. Noble is a nurse and will continue nursing, but said she grew up baking with her mom and is “excited for a little bit of change and to be a little artistic with it.”

LIFESTYLE FITNESS Owner Jared Vlotho will move Lifestyle Fitness two blocks down Central Avenue into the old city hall. He purchased the building from the city and is doing extensive interior work. Vlotho said the biggest change for the physical fitness center is the full concrete floor on the lower level which will improve the gym’s power lifting capabilities. He plans to add more training for younger athletes. For now, the upper level of the old city hall will remain open for use by classes. Long-term, he may adapt the upper level for additional use as an event venue. The Hawarden Historical Society worked for years to save the old city hall building and restore its exterior.

PEOPLE’S BANK People’s Bank and People’s Insurance will move from its current Central Avenue location into a new building which will be built on the southeast corner of Highways 10 and 12. The new location will include a more convenient drive-thru plus the addition of a drive-thru ATM.

PRAIRIE WOODS NATURE CENTER Prairie Woods Nature Center opened at Oak Grove Park just a few miles north of Hawarden at 4051 Cherry Avenue in 2020. Additional info on page 33.

Hawarden Regional Healthcare is home to a 160-slice CT scanner, the most sophisticated scanner in the Midwest between The Mayo Clinic and Denver.

DISCOVER THE BEST HEALTH CARE CLOSE TO HOME By Bob Fitch

Hawarden area residents to think of Hawarden first.”

Hawarden Regional Healthcare wants to get the city’s best kept secret out in the open. Perhaps to the surprise of many, Hawarden Regional Healthcare has the area’s most advanced medical technology, almost without exception. The days of Hawarden residents needing to drive 20 or 50 miles to undergo the most up-to-date medical procedures are in the past. According to Hawarden Regional Healthcare CEO Jayson Pullman, “People still drive by on their way somewhere else for procedures because they have it in their minds that the Hawarden hospital doesn’t have the latest and greatest technology. We want 20 | HAWARDEN TODAY

Not only was Hawarden Regional Healthcare (HRH) the first hospital in northwest Iowa to offer 3D mammography on-site, but now it also owns the area’s first 160-slice CT scanner. Computed Tomography (CT) uses special x-ray equipment to obtain images from different angles around the body. A computer processes the images to demonstrate a cross-section of body tissues and organs. CT imaging is useful for visualizing bone, soft tissue, and blood vessels with great clarity. Kayla Dykstra, HRH radiology manager, said the hospital offers in-house CT scans, mammograms, x-rays, and ultrasound. “We are cutting edge on radiology technology,” she said. Pullman said, “When I first got to Hawarden, we had a 2-slice CT scanner. Then we thought we were advanced when we got a 16-slice scanner; now the facility put in a 160-slice.”

Why is a 160-slice CT scanner a big deal? For patients, it’s the difference between holding your breath for 30 seconds versus holding it for just eight seconds while a scan is done. For someone who may already have health issues or has anxiety about the procedure, “That’s a long 30 seconds,” Dykstra said. “The shorter breath hold is huge. Some people can’t hold their breath that long which then creates motion which creates an unfavorable diagnostic exam. The comfort factor for patients is much higher now.” Higher slice capabilities increase the diagnostic capabilities of the scanner, resulting in clearer images and lower doses of radiation. The latest CT scans and 3D mammograms also provide faster results and patients spend less time wondering ‘What’s going on?’ “Many of our patients are getting sameday results without leaving town,” Dykstra said. She continued, “Back in the day, the provider said, ‘You’re going to go there to get this procedure.’ Now patients are learning they can make the decision where to have a procedure done. You can stay home.” More specialty doctors from Sioux Falls or Sioux City are also discovering they can refer their Hawarden area patients to HRH for procedures.

Certified Nurse Practitioner Amy Waterman visits with a young patient.

When Hawarden residents utilize services such as radiology or physical medicine at HRH more often, it also has the effect of HRH being able to invest even more into equipment and personnel, further enhancing local service, Pullman said. The spinoff effects for the city are significant. The number of jobs HRH provides has gone from 50 to 120 in less than a decade. He emphasized those careers come with excellent pay and benefits. Hawarden Regional Healthcare’s mantra of “Caring Close to Home” also applies to pandemic-related services. As a partner in the nation’s largest mass vaccination effort since polio, HRH began offering coronavirus vaccinations to the public on Feb. 2nd. It also offers Covid testing.

The HRH family practice team. Front: Cindi Rule, ANRP; Jennifer Milby, FNP-C; Amy Waterman, CNP; and Karen Kennedy, ARNP. Back: Kelly Pomerenke, M.D.; Paul Niles, PA-C; and Dale Nystrom, M.D

Naomi Graves, HRH pharmacist, encouraged local residents to register for coronavirus vaccinations at www.hawardenregionalhealthcare.com. Nationwide, the goal is to vaccinate 70 percent of the U.S. population, which puts Hawarden’s target upwards of 1,500 people. Because the vaccine is still in limited supply across the U.S., reaching those vaccination goals are taking longer than hoped. HRH follows priority guidelines from the Iowa Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.

Graves explained that the vaccine uses a body’s own cells to create a “protein spike” (think of the classic picture of the coronavirus with all the spikes poking up). A person’s body recognizes the protein spike as foreign and sets up an immune response.

Even though a person’s turn in line may not occur right away, Graves encouraged residents to register now so, as availability increases, vaccinations can proceed with all due speed. “There’s a lot of concern about the new variants which are more contagious and will spread more quickly. So we hope to get people vaccinated as quickly as possible,” she said.

Graves said HRH is currently using the Moderna vaccine which is a two-dose vaccine spaced about four weeks apart. A person will have his or her fullest immune response about two weeks after receiving the second vaccine dose. While allergic reactions are typically rare, HRH is prepared if a reaction occurs.

She said it’s normal for people who get the vaccine to show fatigue and possibly fever, arm pain and muscle aches. “This is what you should expect because your body is working hard to make the immune response.”

Everything fell into place for us in Hawarden. We are able to worship in Hawarden, our children are in the West Sioux School District, and Jenn works here in town. Over the past 20 years, this has become our home and clearly where we were meant to be.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CURRENT CAREER FIELDS? Jenn said, “Todd and I are both in the careers which we went to school for. Todd attended Iowa Lakes Community College for law enforcement and then went through the Police Academy. I went to the University of Sioux Falls and Northwestern College for a degree in business administration.”

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN HAWARDEN? “The people,” Jenn said. “We cannot say enough about the outpouring of support that was given to Todd and I as we established our family here. As new community members, we were greeted with the warmest welcome. There is always someone there to lend you their trailer because you’re moving or a neighbor who always has an egg or cup of sugar when you are out. We thrive on the generosity of others and will strive to do the same as we continue to live in Hawarden. All of us cherish the friendships we’ve made here.”

Rivers Edge works hard to make sure their employees are appreciated and they encourage community involvement. Visiting Calliope is free and buildings are typically open from 1-4 p.m. on the first Sunday of June, July and August. To schedule a tour, call 712-551-4433. Volunteers from the Hawarden Historical Society maintain Calliope Village. In 1869, Calliope consisted of a courthouse, three log homes and about 10 residents. “Robbed” of the county seat in 1872, Calliope still added businesses and was a stage coach stop for years. The original 1882 depot still stands. The village includes the original Chatsworth town jail and an old harness shop now outfitted as a vintage post office. Country schools are remembered in the 1872 Scott School; and there are authentic tributes to pioneer churches, merchants, doctors, banks and more.

BIG SIOUX RIVER DAYS Hawarden is home to Big Sioux River Days over Labor Day weekend each year. Experience has taught me that each patient and each case is different. Care must be administered with each individual in mind. Experience has taught me that how you treat a patient is often times more important than the treatment itself. Experience has taught me that I don’t know everything and that I must continually learn to stay up on the newest techniques. Experience has taught me that the “Golden Rule” is still the best rule to follow in practice and in life. Let us show you how 20 years of serving people can help you. Thanks for your business!
