STORIES OF A CITY As a resident and citizen of a large small town – or is that a small large town? - one tends to no longer really be aware of the variety of what is on offer, the possibilities and the surrounding beauty. Whatever is out there is taken for granted and is no longer analysed that closely. It becomes as routine as the content of your own wardrobe. The bathrobe next to the pullover, the resplendent beside the shapeless. In the same way that the individual items of clothing are, in themselves, not a complete wardrobe, the individual shop, the individual restaurant or the individual museum do not constitute the whole life blood of a town. Only as a whole, in harmony with each other or sometimes in contrast to one another, does the city find its style, lending it the character that makes it so special to live in and with. And sometimes it needs to be viewed through the eyes of a visitor, a guest, in order to reawaken the vision of the particular characteristics
of one’s own home town. There are, for example, craftsmen and women who make wonderful things for us, or fantastic chefs who look after our wellbeing. But it is the more basic, grounded elements of this city that make it our own: people walking around our city want to open a perspective for you that you possibly would not have seen on your own and introduce you to your surroundings, both natural and man-made, to provoke thought and consideration and to enrichen your view. Even on foot, come with us and explore the most beautiful natural spaces and places in and around Dornbirn, high above it all or just taking it easy! In this edition of 6850, we want to bring you – both visitors and residents – even closer to this variety and diversity. We want to present selected perspectives on and insights into the city in order to rekindle or give new incentives to go out and discover. Come with us and have a look around!

It is the special moments that make living and staying in Dornbirn so unique. Moments such as gazing down from the Karren over the Rhine valley bathed in the red glow of sunset. Moments such as the beguiling scent of fresh popcorn drifting over Marktplatz and announcing the presence of great cinema in the form of the Silent Cinema. Moments such as – ignoring the silent protest of one’s own feet – continuing to dance for the third band at Hörbar. Responsible for these moments is the team at Dornbirn Tourismus & Stadtmarketing. They are the architects and builders of such moments that remain in the memory, and the photo album, forever. They organise the events that form the beating heart of the city, they are the central contact point for guests and residents of the city alike and they also serve as an online source of
information on all aspects of the city. Via social media Dornbirn Tourismus & Stadtmarketing provides its own followers with everything they need to know about upcoming events and provides samples of the wonderful sights and sounds of the most beautiful corners of the city and its surroundings direct to the smart phone. All those thirsting for more information should simply look on the dornbirn.info website, where a wealth of information is waiting for you on culture, sport, shopping, excursion destinations, events and much more. In addition, Dornbirn Tourismus & Stadtmarketing also has many such special moments – and therefore a piece of Dornbirn – to give away in the form of shopping vouchers for use at Inside Dornbirn and Messepark, as well as leisure activities vouchers and tickets from Oeticket and V-Ticket.

Sitting all alone in front of the computer screen with head drooped, face reflecting in the cold, blue light of the monitor. Clicking and swiping, moving in a virtual world from one picture to the next and all you can find anyway is mainstream, run-of-the-mill, boring stuff. Algorithms claim that you understand what a perfect fit is, you are seen as just another number and the ‘customers that bought this, also bought’ recommendations that you receive, try in vain to replace creative suggestions on combination options. Shopping has ceased being an experience and has become a lottery. Fortunately, those looking to acquire some new fashion items have landed on their feet in Dornbirn. Browsing together through
the various boutiques, discovering new and special things, combining with accessories as the whim takes you and pausing for a while in your favourite café to unwind. Instead of waiting in all day for your new favourite shoes to arrive, only then to be infuriated at finding the ‘please come and pick up your package’ note in your post box, real shoppers opt rather for a gentle stroll across Marktplatz. Shopping together and with all your senses – becoming infatuated by the scent of the latest perfumes, feeling the weight of that refined, timeless watch on your wrist – that’s the way shopping should be. That is shopping in Dornbirn.

Despite the tremendous variety of the businesses and goods introduced in the following pages, the reasons and aspirations of the persons behind each of these businesses is exactly the same: passion for the product and its history and culture. The desire to work with one’s hands and to always create something new. And of course the joy of inspiring customers to join the joint discovery and experimentation. Without further ado, here they are, the makers, the creative spirits, the forward thinkers and retro-ponderers, who are going their own way in order to create exceptional products for equally unique people!

BLADE RUNNER MESSERSCHMIEDE WOHLGENANNT
Messerschmiede Wohlgenannt is a veritable paradise for anyone looking for something to cut something with from chef to hobby gardener, from toenails to lamb shoulder. Whereas in former years the main source of income would have been the sharpening of scissors for the local textile industry, nowadays the main focus of the business is clearly on the knife. Much to the pleasure of Gerhard Wohlgenannt, who took the business over from his father 34 years ago. With incredible attention to detail, he preferably manufactures knives by his own skilful hand. As a rule, these are beautifully designed one-off pieces for leisure use, ranging from penknives to bowie knives. For logical reasons Gerhard’s steak knives are not one-offs because he has also fashioned matching forks to accompany them. Also when it comes to bought-in
goods, only the best will do for Gerhard Wohlgenannt. People have been cooking with light and well-balanced knives from Japan and Germany for decades. The most important thing for Gerhard is that he only buys in the highest quality products and that each product can always be re-sharpened or repaired. By the way, a secret tip for those conscious of hygiene is to only use naturally antibacterial chopping boards made of camphor laurel. And those over the age of 18 will also find swords and katanas in the best-stocked cutlery store in the state. GLOBAL COFFEE CULTURE KAFFEEBOHNE
The Kaffeebohne is a lovely place to pass some time. Tasteful in every aspect, this coffee bar on Marktstraße is probably familiar to every window shopper in the city centre. But why only drink the finest coffee when out and about, when one can also drink it at home? Elmar and Carmen Bitschnau offer highland-coffees from the best growing districts in the world. All fair-trade and bought from small importers in Italy and Hamburg, coffees beans from Columbia, Guatemala or Kenya are lovingly roasted in-house. Due to different soil properties, each region has its own characteristic aromas, which are enhanced during the roasting process. The secret of bringing out the full flavour lies in a particular slow drum-roasting
18
process. Elmar Bitschnau roasts the exquisite fruits at between 200 and 220 degrees for up to 25 minutes – quite contrary to industrial production, where beans are normally shock-roasted for a mere 4 minutes at 600 degrees. A recommendation is the masterfully constructed coffee and espresso blends. Their musical names, such as ‘Puccini’, ‘Verdi’, ‘Rossini’ and ‘Rigoletto’, are an indication of how they might taste to the palette. Of course, Kaffeebohne can also help with tips and equipment for the ideal preparation. KAFFEEBOHNE – MARKTSTR. 41, KAFFEEBOHNE.CO.AT, 3 MON TO FRI 7.30 AM – 6.30 PM, SAT 7.30 AM – 14 PM

SHOES FOR A LIFETIME SCHUHMANUFAKTUR
It soon becomes apparent when one enters Christine Dünsers Manufaktur that this is not a normal shop, rather the workshop itself. Because every pair of shoes is manufactured individually with the most diligent handiwork, there are also not that many display items. The fact that bespoke shoes are more comfortable to wear should be obvious to everyone. Though, how they should look is a matter for each individual customer. Male clientele appreciate in particular a timeless, elegant style, which does not draw too many odd looks during daily existence. On the other hand, women often want shoes for special occasions that express their own personalities. Christine first fell in love with her chosen form of craftsmanship during her studies at the Polimoda in Flor-
ence. In particular her work with a south-Italian, oldschool master shoemaker instilled a passion for this form of classical handiwork. Before setting up on her own, Christine worked for Ferragamo and a small Italian company that realised handbag designs for Dior, Chanel and Nina Ricci. The decision to become a shoemaker was soon finally made, however. There is simply no other craft that she finds as fulfilling as the daily challenge of manufacturing the perfect bespoke pair of shoes for an individual customer, perfect in both design and finish. IT’S ABOUT THE FINE DETAILS SÖHMSEN’S MANUFAKTUR
Wolfgang Sohm gives the impression of being a happy man. For ten years now he stands every day at his stove together with his wife Barbara, cooking and tinkering in order to perfect his new creations. He began with sugos, pestos and antipasti, the recipes and preparation secrets for which he discovered in traditional rustic restaurants in Tuscany. Shortly after setting up he was successful in placing his delicacies in the exquisite ranges of Dallmayr in Munich and of Meinl am Graben. For years, Sutterlüty (Vorarlberg supermarket chain) has been allowing all of its house-branded marmelades to be manufactured at Söhmsen’s Manufaktur. All delicacies packed in jars are manufactured by hand using traditional methods and always using the best ingredients from the region – the
only exceptions being products, for example such as mangos, which simply won’t grow in our local climate. Even the labels are self-designed by Wolfgang Sohm, who used to be a graphic designer 15 years ago. Cheese lovers are particularly fond of the excellent fruit mustards. And the delicious chutneys give a wonderful fruity-spicy curry kick to both cheese platters and to meat, fish and rice dishes. To those who like to experiment, there are no boundaries! EVERY BIKE A ONE-OFF KRAFTSTOFF BIKES
Without a shadow of a doubt, you can find the most beautiful, sportiest, coolest and most idiosyncratic bicycles at Kraftstoff. It doesn’t matter which requirements and which personal preferences mister or miss bicycle rider has when entering the door, every customer will receive precisely the right bike. It starts with the measurement of body dimensions and includes the possibility of personalising the bike with own bespoke designs. Those who decide on what they want swiftly can also choose from one of the – also extremely numerous – standard variants, which can then be manufactured to size in one of more than 50 colours. Either way, your personal bicycle will be finished in just 14 days. One new development should also be noted with the e-bikes: according to Oliver
Mösslang, even die-hard mountain bikers are now no longer laughing at these. In order to do justice to the still persisting retro-trend, Kraftstoff has entered into a new market with its Fortuna brand, which is based on classical Italian designs, however with a style of its own and, of course, using the latest status of technology. Remarkably the new Fortuna bikes do not differ significantly in weight from the classic Kraftstoff bikes equipped with aluminium or carbon-fibre frames. HEIGHTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY TEXT › DOMINIK SEKACIC PHOTOGRAPHY › ADOLF BEREUTER
They are giants from an almost forgotten time. Some would call them ugly, others fascinating. A huge crucible rising towards the heavens, uniting the most varied of people under one roof, a melting pot of totally diverse existences and innumerable unique stories. We are taking a look at five of the highest buildings in Dornbirn with architecture student Maximilian Zwickl in order to find out what a young, up-and-coming future architect thinks of the work of his spiritual predecessors.
TRADE FAIR COMPLEX HIGH RISE REALSCHULSTRASSE 6
We meet up outside the grammar school in Realschulstraße. The trade fair high-rise building looms in front of us, towering upwards towards the grey hazy sky. Built in 1957, this building is nearly twice as old as the young architect at my side, who appears instantly excited by this edifice: “The location alone is fantastic – the complex is close to the city centre, yet at the same time far enough away from it. A building such as this offers a good residential mix and entices one to it with superb infrastructure. Shopping opportunities and schools are situated practically right in front of the door and those who want
green spaces only need to walk a few metres to the inatura park.” From an architectural perspective, the building has particular qualities that are maybe not obvious at first glance. “The window elements are adorned with mosaics and are reminiscent of French balconies. They provide a deliberate sense of order and give the south side of the building almost a touch of abstract art.”

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN MARKTSTRASSE MARKTSTRASSE 65
Our next stop is the high-rise building in Marktstraße. Designed at the start of the 1970s, it probably gets very few people excited, however Maximilian is one of the few. The protrusions on the balconies, which sometimes function as a seating area or a flower box and which are mirrored from storey to storey, cause some excitement: “Despite this building’s large volume, the design is such that it doesn’t feel over-weighted – the playfulness of the mirrored elements, the strong horizontal segmentation by the grey bands and the protuberances and recesses of the façade – the building masks like a well-cut dress. Moreover, it is a fabulous example of how much value
24
was placed back then on a prefabricated concrete building. It is in reality an economically-built functional building with prestige status. Formwork patterns were not hidden away, rather presented almost proudly. Back then things that fulfilled a function were proudly shown off – as is the case, for example, with many rainwater spouts that create visible arcs of water cascading to the ground.”

DISTRICT AUTHORITY BUILDING DORNBIRN KLAUDIASTRASSE 6
The opposite of playfulness awaits us in Klaudiastraße. This high-rise building, in which parts of Dornbirn’s district authority are housed, is more cube-shaped than anything. “The differences are obvious in the facade, with its clear, sharp edges, deliberately kept simple and sober. It is also obvious that the lower two storeys were not conceived as residential, at least the lack of balconies allows that conclusion to be drawn”, explains the architecture student. Although the building is in fact older than that
in Marktstraße, it looks more modern. “One main reason for that is the light, generous stairwells. Nowadays stairwells are no longer designed so sumptuously, however a deliberate flooding with light gives a feel of being larger – similar to as in this 50 year old building”.

TOBLERONE BUILDING EISENGASSE 18
The high rise building in Eisengasse is something for geometry enthusiasts – a real interplay of shapes. With a polyangular ground plan, a myriad of obscured right-angle triangles and corners broken in 45 degree angles, the grin on our young architect’s face seems to get wider and wider with every edge and angle. “The sides of the building follow the course of the street”, Maximilian indicates with his hand movements as we walk around the ground floor, which is dedicated to commercial use. The residential floors above are set back away from the street and the building is crowned by two penthouse apartments. The
luxurious entrance hall, finished in stone, also makes an impression on our architect. “The inside of the building demonstrates a clear differentiation to the others. Here there are no formwork patterns to be found, all the walls have been plastered. The stairs are central to the stairwell, allowing the residential apartments to be built around and thus allowing this fantastic external form.”

BAHNHOFSTRASSE BAHNHOFSTRASSE 26/28
With its twelve storeys, the high rise building on Bahnhofsstraße is not only the tallest, it is also probably the most famous high rise building in Dornbirn. This is maybe not that surprising, after all when arriving at Dornbirn railway station this is the first building that one sees and with its two prominent concrete spiral staircases and the large, if in the meantime also partially plastered over, commercial display windows, it is hardly subtle. “As such it is actually not a residential building as it was originally planned as a complex. There are various entrances and a covered precinct, which also contains a gallery. Everything in the original concept was aimed at vitalisation. The two-storey commercial area functioned
well as an open-air shopping centre. Back then the residential apartments were most certainly very popular – there were shops and businesses directly below the apartments, it was a busy, much-frequented, special place. One can picture an image of a long-haired man with platform shoes and brown flared trousers standing on the terrace puffing on a cigarette and watching the hustle and bustle down below.”

URBAN SPACES TEXT › VERENA KONRAD PHOTOGRAPHY › VAI: DARKO TODOROVIC
The so-called functions of existence, ‘ living’, ‘working’, ‘providing for oneself ’, ‘educating oneself ’, ‘maintaining health’, ‘ living in a community’, ‘participating in society’, ‘ disposal of waste’ and ‘participating in communication’, are incorporated in the urban environment and in the world that we construct around us. How we can participate and in which functions, makes the status of civil society clear. There is always potential for development.
28
Living in Dornbirn has many faces. Living standards vary greatly, from small to large, from substandard to luxury, from cramped and enclosed to light and airy, in buildings of all ages that tell stories of their users and their possibilities and demands. The vitality of the city shows in their diversity. The contradiction of living as an essential requirement to the building as an asset is paramount to the current discussion. No house has answers to all questions in the world. However, the aspects that it thematises should be well laid out. Nearly 20 years after its construction, the ‘Atriumhaus’ in Dornbirn’s Oberdorf district is still an exceptional project. It is a meeting of thoughts on neighbourhood development and ecological, social and aesthetic demands. Working life is also easily readable from the cityscape. Industry, commerce and trade characterise the structure of a town. However, the past histories of former industries remain beyond the revitalisation of their locations and factory buildings: Kehlerpark is today a location for work, shopping, the Dornbirn music school also holds its jazz seminars there, making it a highly-frequented location for young musicians. The Stadtgarten in Dornbirn is home to inatura and the Kunstraum Dornbirn. Both of these cultural institutions are housed in historical industrial architecture. The same applies to the high school campus of the Fachhochschule Vorarlberg (University of Applied Sciences) on Sägerstraße/Stadtstraße. Many companies, as well as restaurants, have today found a home in Steinebach, the former production site of the

textiles company F.M. Hämmerle. With ‘Gütle’, a museum completes the repertoire of follow-up use. Rhomberg’s former factory is now completely dedicated to cultural pursuits, commerce and residential. New production facilities don’t have an easy task of living up to the standards of their predecessors. Innovations in commercial buildings are delivered in the form of, for example, LCT 1, Life Cycle Tower 1, a development by Cree in conjunction with the architect firm Hermann Kaufmann. The building is the first eight-storey timber construction in Austria and is a prototype within a research project on timber construction systems. The building is home to offices and the headquarters of the construction company Cree. Shopping opportunities are important to a town – not only for visitors. Items required for daily use must be available in the city as a necessity for the day-to-day living of the people residing in it. The activation of ground floor areas together with the street areas adjoining them and the backyard areas behind them transforms the city centre into a living space. The cultural changes brought about by the shopping environment is shown by projects such as ‘Marenda Brotkultur’. ‘Marenda’ means snack. The establishment is a mixture of shop and café. Public space gains in significance for its importance to public wellbeing. The differentiation between public and private interests becomes a pivotal question. This is also good for architecture, which proves here to be a social practice where requirements can be clearly formulated. Public buildings and spaces are particularly complex concepts. In its construction projects, the city of Dornbirn has many times confirmed its role as paragon of design quality. For example, recently in the design of a section of Stadtstraße and the recent construction of the Sägerbrücke (bridge). The metaphor ‘The bridge as an island’ makes it very clear that the idea of being a space for pedestrians to enjoy is an integral part of the concept. In 2009 Dornbirn also decreed a school development concept, which puts in place an investment schedule for compulsory schools and kindergartens up to the year 2030. The focus is clearly on the quality of educational space and variety in the city, even if this is partly through
29
the spatial adaptation and renovation of existing spaces. An alternative school has been constructed, taking in new students every 1-2 years while their own educational facilities are renovated or constructed. Recently constructed as brand new facilities are the kindergarten on Marktstraße, designed by architects Marte.Marte, and the primary school Edlach, designed by architects Dietrich Untertrifaller. Both top notch pieces of architecture. The city baths, das stadtbad, has been one of the main attractions on Stadtstraße since 2005. Of key importance, however, is its function as sports venue and relaxation and convalescence centre. The architects cukrowicz nachbaur won the competition allowing them to redesign and expand the existing building from the 1960s and embedded the entire complex in a park-like garden environment. The high demands of the city of its building culture is also shown in its infrastructural projects. The city now has three bridges, planned by the hands of brothers Stefan and Bernhard Marte, in the wildly romantic Ebnittal valley. Socially relevant: the city has thus made this small settlement in the high mountain valley permanently accessible.

BUILDING HISTORIES TEXT › VERENA KONRAD PHOTOGRAPHY › DORNBIRN TOURISMUS & STADTMARKETING
The biography of a town can be seen in many places. Amongst others its buildings and the layout of its plazas and the roads leading to them. Join us on a small tour through Dornbirn city centre with a few pauses for reflection.
30
Marktplatz – This relatively large plaza has always been lined with inns and taverns. Meetings were held here and the town’s mayors were chosen by popular vote. Many Dornbirn residents still remember the busy traffic that once circulated through this market square and this was once the busiest road junction in the whole of Vorarlberg. However, the area was pedestrianised in 1989. St. Martin’s church – The parish church of St. Martin was first mentioned in 1278. Since then there have been several new church buildings on this site. The free-standing tower was constructed nearly 200 years later. It was then raised up to approx. 60 metres in 1767. The square is dominated by the church and its classicistic style. Beside the church, the church tower and vicarage are equally as impressive buildings. The vicarage was constructed in historicistic style in 1901. Architect Hanns Kornberger drafted plans for the overhanging gable and round ionic columns, providing the parish church with its very own stylistic uniqueness. In the more recent past (2008/09)
the church has been converted to the parish centre by architects Michael Heim and Wolfgang Ritsch. Rotes Haus, Marktplatz 13 – The house was constructed in 1639 replacing the old vicarage, which burnt down in 1570. It is still possible today to gain a good insight into the wooden construction methods used back in those days. Notable are the groups of windows in fourparts, the painted, retractable window shutters and the eaves decorated with vines. The red colour was obtained by using the protective paint used at the time, described as ‘ox blood’. The house has a particular significance in the history of Dornbirn. In 1655 the citizens gathered on the outside steps of the Rotes Haus in order to prevent the sale of the town of Dornbirn to the Counts of Hohenems. City Archive and Stadtmuseum, Marktplatz 11 – Josef Anton Lanter, industrialist and community mayor, commissioned the construction of this grand town house in 1796. The building subsequently became the headquarters of the industrial family Rhomberg. It was purchased by the city of Dornbirn in 1958 and today houses the city archive and museum. Luger-Haus, Marktplatz 9 – The building, originally the barn and stables of the Feurstein-Haus, was re-purposed as a tavern, the ‘Sonne’. It was renovated in the old-German style in 1901/02. Note the contoured gable, the small bay alcove and the corner tower with the timber frame. Also worth mentioning is the Art Nouveau plasterwork decoration, the wooden veranda on the rear of the building and the internal renovations in post-modernist style after a fire in the year 1987. Today, the building houses the chambers of a law firm, a children’s bookshop and the legendary Café Steinhauser. Vorarlberger Naturschau, Marktstraße 33 – This former administrative and warehouse building of the tex-

tile firm J. A. Winder was constructed in 1882. In 1960 a natural history museum was opened on the same site. The ‘Vorarlberger Naturschau’ was realised on the initiative of Siegfried Fußenegger, a local industrialist. After the departure of the Naturschau this town house became a multi-use facility with a cultural emphasis: the FLATZ Museum, the Vorarlberger Architektur Institut and the offices of the Kunstraum Dornbirn are all housed here. The ground floor is home to a bookshop and the restaurant Innauer. The current facade of the building is the result of a renovation by architects Dietrich Untertrifaller. c.art Gallery, Marktstraße 45 – Dornbirn experienced a building boom in the 1960s. Very few of the buildings erected during this period can lay claim to any particular architectural qualities. However, this building designed by architect Ernst Hiesmayr and completed in 1972 is one of the few and its modern design was hotly disputed amongst the population of the city at that time. Originally built as a residential and commercial building by the building owner, Christoph Zünd, this unusual design still looks at its best today. Adolf-Rhomberg-Haus, Marktstraße 26 – The industrialist Marx Alois Luger constructed this house in 1798/99 based on the plans by master builder Sigmund Hilbe. Eduard Rhomberg purchased the house in 1834. His son Adolf was the Provincial governor of Vorarlberg between 1890 and 1918. During this period the Art nouveau details were added by architect Hanns Kornberger. The professional association of the Vorarlberg construction industry purchased the house in 1987-90. Capuchin monastery, Marktstraße 49 – As a thank you for the recuperation of his severely ill wife, provincial governor Adolf Rhomberg gifted a Capuchin monastery opposite his own residence. The church dedicated to St. Joseph was built in 1893/94. In 2004 the monastery was handed over to the Franciscan Province of Poznan in Poland. Music school, Rosenstraße 6 Brick is a building material that once flourished in Dornbirn during the time of the textile industry and numerous villas were built in the English style. The building that today houses the city’s music school also bears the marks of this cultural exchange. It was built in 1900/01 as a finishing school for girls. The original Art Nouveau glazing of the stairwell is worth seeing.
31
Heilandskirche – The design of this Evangelical church in Rosenstraße follows the plans of architect Otto Bartning and was built in the years 1930-31. The plans were obtained from another parish in Bohemia, where they had already been used in the construction of another church. The building has an octagonal shape, from which the entrance, two staircases and the choir and sacristy are formed in perfect symmetry. The building is completed by a polygonal spire with lantern. Schloßguggerhaus, Sebastianstraße 24 – The so-called ‘Schloßgugger-Haus’ is the oldest house still standing in Dornbirn and dates back to the year 1294. It is also interesting from a construction history perspective, with its vertical timbering construction, quarry stone brickwork, paired windows and rounded doorways. According to rumour, there is an underground tunnel linking the Schloßgugger-Haus to the Oberdorfer Turm.

Culinary delicacies in a class of their own, an extravagant atmosphere, exciting gambling fun and a first-rate entertainment programme: Casino Bregenz excels as a multifaceted, exclusive world of adventure and offers guests an experience that’s one of a kind. In the midst of it: innovative FALSTAFF Chef Gernot Bischofsberger, who indulges guests from near and far. It’s the ingredients themselves that are the actual protagonists at the FALSTAFF restaurant, insists the 35year-old leading chef. Fresh, natural and authentic. In addition to international classics of haute cuisine, it’s primarily top domestic quality that’s served. Soft cheese from the Bregenzerwald meets scallops, European sea bass and truffles. To guarantee the very best quality of ingredients, Bischofsberger, who took charge of the FALSTAFF kitchen in summer of 2016, counts on a network of local farmers and producers. ”Better quality is hard to find. We receive exclusive specialities hardly any other chef has access to“, Gernot Bischofsberger is delighted to say. In addition to the finest of authentic ingredients, in his personal culinary line Bischofsberger also places great
value on the presentation of the dishes. ”I like to play a bit with the plates. The appearance of the dishes should be a genuine delight“. He learned from the very best: as a guest chef for British television star Jamie Oliver, at the gourmet festival in St. Moritz, and as executive chef at the Grand Hotel Belvédère in Davos, Switzerland. With his creations, Gernot Bischofsberger has already indulged celebrities such as Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Bischofsberger’s involvement with local food and his attempt to perfect the dishes was worth an award from Gault & Millau after a few months. The FALSTAFF restaurant thus underscores its international reputation as a culinary hotspot on Lake Constance.

EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THE SENSES
In addition to the finest of dishes and fascinating wines, ambience also plays an important role: modern architecture, an exclusive atmosphere and first-rate service. Through the interplay of all of these factors, the chef creates a very special culinary experience for his guests. Visitors can look forward to an exceptional time – and dine like DiCaprio! AN AMBIENCE TO SAVOUR
Visitors are not only optically indulged by the FALSTAFF restaurant with its sophisticated lighting concept, but by Casino Bregenz as a whole: an abstract reflection of the waves of Lake Constance, the slat façade stands out first and foremost through its ability to change. Depending on the incidence of sun and light, the optics of the

building’s shell are transformed and continually reinvented. During the night, indirect LED lighting makes the façade a medium for video animation. The cloud terrace with its floating rooftop construction is a work of art in itself. The logical centre point, the core of this world of adventure, is the pleasure of gambling at Casino Bregenz. On a total space of 2,000 sqm, an international range of first-rate games awaits the 334,000 visitors per year from all over the world: French Roulette, American Roulette, Black Jack, Poker, Macau Baccarat, the slot machines – all of it in an atmosphere of extravagance. ”The international range of games combined with the restaurant space sets new standards in the business of entertainment experience“, says Bernhard Moosbrugger, director of Casino Bregenz.

OUT IN THE FRESH AIR WITH OUTDOOR GUIDE ARMIN MALOJER TEXT › BARBARA SCHMIEDEHAUSEN PHOTOGRAPHY › CHRISTOPH PALLINGER
34
Do you think you know Dornbirn already? Really? Do you agree with the crowned prince of German writers Goethe, that one has only really been to a place once one has hiked there by foot, or perhaps it is better to say ‘walked’. The word ‘ hiked’ conjures up images of special equipment and measurable success, calculated in metres of elevation and mountain summits - at least that is what our guide Armin Malojer might say. We simply want to get out in the fresh air and encourage you to do the same.
Every journey begins with the first step. With this in mind, we climb aboard city bus no. 7 at the railway station and head towards Gütle, an idyllic district of Dornbirn at the end of a slowly winding road, flanked by woods and the river Dornbirner Ach, only a good five kilometres from Dornbirn city centre. Through a picturesque small park complete with impressive sequoia, 41 metre tall and with an equally considerable girth, passing former workers’ cottages with vegetable gardens and water pipes entirely covered by moss, indications of the industrial past of the Gütle region, and across the first bridge over one of the water pipes to the entrance to the gorge. If one is already in need of refreshment or sustenance, one can do so here at the romantic kiosk located directly by the waterfall. After a good half hour we arrive at the Staufensee lake, however one could easily take a little more time to stop and be amazed at the spectacular waterfalls and dramatic cliffs sprouting trees and shrubs that cling almost impossibly to the barren rocks. It is then a leisurely stroll along the banks of the lake to the Alplochschlucht gorge, a wildly romantic ravine resulting from a glacial polish. Seemingly adventurous, however well-secured walkways lead through the ravine, passing extraordinary rock formations as we go. After approximately 30 minutes the path takes us through deciduous forest to Ebnitstraße. From here it is possible to jump
on the hourly number 47 regional bus back to where we started from at Dornbirn railway station. However, we continue to the ‘Karrenseilbahn’ cable car station. With little wear of shoe leather and in no particular hurry, we ascend to the top of Dornbirn’s very own backyard mountain, the Karren, at a height of 976 metres. This is the starting point for walks and tours of the surrounding natural playground, including Rappenloch, Alploch, Ebnit, First and Staufen, as well as hikes across the municipal boundary towards Schuttannen and Hohe Kugel. Depending on fitness and gusto, there are plenty of paths, both easy and more challenging, up on the Karren to run, jog, walk or saunter along. Our outdoor guide swallows his pride and leads us along a well-managed and broad forest path, muttering under his breath, rather impertinently I thought, something about “pensioner’s walk”. We pretended not to hear. The more energetic can, of course, torture themselves with the steep ascent, however those preferring a gentler approach can take the cable car up to enjoy the astonishing, spectacular views over the Rhine valley and Lake Constance from the new glass viewing platform. We call it a day with the walking thing for today and opt for a nice slice of cake in the Karren-Restaurant. Twilight softly falls as we gently descend back down into the valley in the cable car. For us it is all about being outside, not setting records, not today anyway!

ARMIN MALOJER The outdoor and nature guide lives with his three cats in Dornbirn. After spending many years as a journalist and writer, he is now finally living his dream spending the majority of his time out exploring Mother Nature. When he is not out in the fresh air the 51-year-old can be found at CafĂŠ Steinhauser solving crossword puzzles, just as a contrast but also a for little urban sophistication.

BERGDORF AND WALSER SETTLEMENT EBNIT We are getting close to the charming mountain village of Ebnit, coming in the back way, so to speak, over Hohenems Schuttannen, via Springhaldenweg from Schiheim Schuttannen and up onto the Fluhereck mountain, where we stop for refreshment upon alighting at ‘Pfarrers Älpele’, where we are wonderfully received by the publicans Harry and Kerstin. We then take Schönblickweg, not the steep section, rather the small path over the brook and through the forest to the church. While waiting for the bus, refreshments can be obtained from the ‘Marendstüble’ or the ‘Alpenrose’. There are many adventurous activities in Ebnit - in addition to the extensive hiking trails of course – this includes adventure tours in Bruderbach, a slackline course, a 3D archery course and the ‘Schluchten-Fox’ high wire and zipwire course. There is also a riding school with well-trained, well-natured Icelandic horses, which may be of particular interest to families with children. In the winter months there is also a small, child-friendly ski piste, complete with ski lift, and the ‘Heumöser Stüble’ provides delicious sustenance.
36
UP ON THE BÖDELE The number 38 regional bus leaves every half hour and takes the rather curvaceous Landstraße past the exclusive residential area of Watzenegg and up onto the Bödele mountain. As we travel around the mighty curves, views of the Rhine valley and Lake Constance open up before us. The ‘Berghof Fetz’, with its inviting coffee terrace with views over Lake Constance, is located directly at the bus stop. From here we embark on a gentle stroll to the ‘Meierei’, a walk which would also be friendly for prams and even in Hölzlern (Bregenzerwälder clogs, worn all year round). After a brief pause in the ‘Dornbirner Hütte’ and a generous portion of spicy Kässpätzle, we continue up to the Hochälpele, pausing once again to say hello to Petra and Werner at the ‘Hochälpelehütte’ and a schnapps to wash down the food. Shame we were no longer hungry! The spinach dumpling soup, Kässpätzle and home-made cakes are legendary here. Instead we enjoy the breathtaking views in all directions. We proceed over the mountain to the Lustenauer Hütte and then along Spechtweg to Losenpass and back to where we started from. A very simple walk with hardly any change in elevation leads from Losenpass through the Fohramoos, a nature preservation area with natural moorland, rare plant species and, in winter, an exceptional cross-country ski track.

Armin’s tip – Karren Experienced hikers with good footwear and surefootedness can leave from the Mühlebach area of the city over the Feientobel through the Bachtobel of Fallbach or the Leiternweg up to Karren. In some places the path leads through very steep forest and a good guide is a requirement if one is not familiar with the territory, sometimes unsigned and with poor signage. The day can also be rounded off by an ascent of the Staufenspitze, a wonderful viewing point.
Armin’s tip – Alploch and Kirchle After a rockfall in the year 2011, Rappenloch gorge was initially partially closed off and was reopened in 2013 with a new walkway for hikers and walkers, which, according to Armin, has detracted a little from the original wildness of the place. For experienced hikers with good footwear and searching for a little more ‘wildness’ after their trip through Rappenloch, there is another hike through the Alploch gorge to the so-called ‘Kirchle’. The Kirchle is an extraordinary natural monument with fantastic cliff overhangs and light effects.
Armin’s tip – Bödele The Bödele is the starting point for many fabulous walks. For experienced walkers our mountain guide recommends starting at the Lustenauer Hütte and hiking along Spechtweg in the direction of Bregenzer Hütte, taking the branch-off point to Rothenbachalpe and, directly on the cliff face, enjoying that view across the Rhine valley. Here again, if you are not familiar with the territory, it is better to take a good local guide.

HUNGRY AS A BEAR IN DORNBIRN TEXT › BARBARA SCHMIEDEHAUSEN PHOTOGRAPHY › LUKAS HÄMMERLE
Do you know the feeling? Suddenly your stomach sinks to the hollows of your knees, you feel a vacuum inside that turns your belly inside out, you can almost hear your blood sugar levels plummeting like a stone, your stomach growls loudly like an irritable grizzly and suddenly the wild look in your eyes is reminiscent of one. You are as hungry as a bear! This is not a time for fingerfoods or ‘amuse-bouches’, no snacks or nibbles. No: a wheelbarrow full of meat, hearty side dishes and maybe a couple of forkfuls of salad on the side to help it all down. For such emergency hunger situations, we have the following addresses for you.
FOOD THAT STICKS TO THE RIBS BBQ LONGHORN SMOKEHOUSE
We begin our ‘tour of plenty’ at the BBQ Longhorn. This is the best location to satisfy the wildest hunger of them all, for a decent slab of meat in sizeable proportions. The team at the first Texan BBQ with indoor smoker in the whole of Europe, have large chunks of juicy Black Angus beef, fed on corn for up to two years, and Swabian-Hall swine, fattened in forest and meadow with German acorns, as well as plump-breasted organic-turkey, in the smoker day and night, 362 days a year. This delicious meat is slowly cooked for 10 to 20 hours in warm smoke, with the original hickory pellets from the USA creating an inimitable flavour. Head chef Kristin Otto and her 90 percent female kitchen team instinctively know precisely when each piece of meat is perfectly cooked. It’s a feeling more than a measurement, and also a source
of great pride. The meat is firstly sealed at 110 degrees, then the dry aged beef, the tender turkey breasts and the thick, tasty pork ribs, as well as the shoulder for the pulled pork, are slowly smoked until simply melt-in-themouth delicious. Cooked at low temperatures in so-called ‘steambags’, this carnivorous feast will certainly satisfy even the most ravenous bear. An entire ton of meat is consumed at BBQ Longhorn each month and this establishment is not only loved by male diners. “We have female customers who regularly polish off a 750 g triple burger, and before that a plate of chicken wings and still there’s room for dessert”, explains manager and passionate BBQ fanatic Edi Stern. The kitchen team regularly receive awards for their smoked delicacies and have been selected for the third time for partic-

ipation in the Jack Daniels BBQ World Championships in Tennessee. Yes, selected: this is a purely invitational tournament, it is not possible to enter. The Longhorn BBQ team compete in between 10 and 20 competitions every year and also operate a mobile smoker that can be booked for company functions and celebrations. Once you have tasted a pulled pork sandwich, suddenly a bratwurst no longer seems to cut it! And once you have tasted brisket, a pork chop doesn’t seem that appealing! The most popular dishes served up at BBQ Longhorn include Texas brisket, cut from the forequarter of the cow and transformed into an unbelievably juicy treat through the slow-cooking method in the smoker, chicken wings, from local hens from the Bregenzer Wald, and of course the burgers, fashioned exclusively from steak mince and seasoned with fleur de sel, crisp on the outside but still beautifully pink on the inside. 70 to 100 of these juicy delights are served up to male and female connoisseurs every day, with all the classic and desired
accompaniments. The side dishes – including beans with bacon, potato wedges and coleslaw – are also freshly prepared. But it is the excellent, addictive home-made sauces that are the special accompaniment to the delicious beef, pork, chicken and turkey dishes, for example ‘chimichurry’, a combination of olive oil, parsley, oregano, coriander and a hint of garlic. Exquisite! The Texan feast is washed down with classic, genuine American Bud – “it does a body good”, as the legendary advert says. Designated drivers or those simply wishing to keep a clear head can also order a delicious home-made iced tea. Still room for dessert? Why not: pecan pie, cheesecake or ‘Oreo Dream’ always go down well!

JUST LIKE GRANNY’S KITCHEN GASTHAUS HELVETIA
The regulars of this traditional tavern located beside the River Dornbirner Ach fondly refer to it simply as the ‘Vets’ and come to enjoy good food in a comfortable atmosphere, as Mama or Grandma would have cooked it. The proprietor, Waltraud, a fourth generation restaurateur, cooks everthing herself, for example juicy roast pork with crackling, served with home-made dumplings and cabbage, fried schnitzel or the ever-changing weekly special - all portions in ‘normal’ (i.e. huge!) or for the ‘ladies’ hunger’. The Helvetia is particularly well-known for its ‘butcher’s pork parties’ at the start of October and for the ‘goose parties’ at the start of November. During Lent there is also a ‘Munich week’, during which many special beer varieties are on offer, such as Salvatorbier and Mohren-Bock beer. However, Lent fasting is not a necessity!

SO DELICIOUSLY NORMAL GASTHOF SCHWANEN
Host Walter Greber can look back on a long history at the ‘Gasthof zum Schwanen’. This restaurant on Lustenauer Straße, originally dating back to the 18th century, has been in the possession of the Greber family for more than 80 years. Head chef Georg Ploner uses regional products sourced from local farmers and butchers for the famously generous portions of Wiener Schnitzel, home-made skewered meat, Kässpätzle (soft cheesy pasta) and the various grill specialities. This town inn also has a shady garden with ancient chestnut trees, complete with outdoor grill in summer. The Greber family always welcome their guests warmly, including the many regulars, who come to play cards, sing songs and even participate in the theatre group. The customers here are a colourful mix, from construction workers to senior citizens, from doctors to artists. A wonderfully normal hostelry.

DAS STADTBAD An oasis in the centre of Dornbirn
45
Dornbirn is anything but a desert, yet right in the centre is the place in question with a relatively large amount of water and exceptional features: the municipal swimming pool. Behind the huge glass façade of the imposing cube-shaped building, it is not just shimmering blue pools which entice you … The municipal swimming pool is one of the most modern and attractive pools in the region. Swimming, sauna, massage and a visit to the public restaurant – the climate is always heavenly. Bathers of all ages have fun splashing about in the sports and multipurpose pool equipped with diving platform. The non-swimmer and parentchild area with own baby pool and the popular fountain are ideal for families. The biggest crowd puller is the so-called “Black Box”: inside is the spectacular 46-metre tube slide with water, light and sound effects.

ARTISTIC RECREATIONAL ISLAND
Where there is an Oasis, there is also a mirage not too far away. The media artist, Ruth Schnell, created the magic pulsating lightbar “LOUD and QUIET” on the inner façade. Its rhythm reflects the acoustic level in the swimming pool, forming imaginary word creations. The sauna landscape in itself is also an Oasis. With various temperatures to choose from, the guests are properly heated. They can follow their own heat rhythm with hourglasses, and when the sand has trickled through, it’s time to take a cold (or very cold) shower. The hard-boiled prefer the cool diving pool. During the winter season a courtyard is waiting for you to cool off. After that one can relax in the cozy resting room before the next round. The weekends and Holidays can considerably accelerate ones pulse – the oasis in the center of Dornbirn becomes a holiday island.

Sometimes it may, must and should be something special, just that little bit extra that puts us in celebratory mood or is the crowning glory to a special occasion. Regional cuisine open to international influences, that is how head chef Walter Feurstein describes his style of cooking, which he has been practicing now for 28 years. The focus at the Krone is firmly on the traditional and this is reflected in the tasteful menu: classics such as calf liver with home-made rösti, traditional boiled rump of beef and seasonal dishes, such as specialty game, asparagus and goose, are all prepared to the highest professional standards and served in the homely atmosphere of the traditional wine tavern, the bourgeois dining room, the modern, renovated open-plan restaurant or the light, contemporary conservatory with outdoor terrace. The menu also includes dishes for vegetarians and vegans.
Architecturally resembling a ship, Hotel Restaurant Martinspark lies directly in the heart of the bustling centre of Dornbirn and invites visitors and residents to dinner for two, to Sunday family brunch or to business lunch. The fresh culinary delights are served up by head chef Dominik Baitz and include a range of small and large regional, Mediterranean and international dishes. The composition of the dishes is very sophisticated and the menu certainly has a varied flavour: grilled freshwater char from the regional lakes on a bed of saffron risotto with rocket and parmesan sits alongside massaman curry, Wiener schnitzel, pulled pork sandwich and speciality burgers.
Currently the only restaurant in Dornbirn to carry a Gault & Millau toque, the Verwalter is a traditional tavern with over 300 years of history, yet always with a fresh note. Regional and international cuisine, fresh from the market. The menu includes dishes such as rolled calf cordon bleu, Verwalter’s bouillabaisse, traditional ‘Gröstl’ beef and potato hash with octopus and calf sweetbreads and lobster salad, as well as chamois and venison hunted by the proprietor in Gaschurn/Montafon. The wine menu is also impressive, with between up to 500 national and international wines, optimally stored in the old, natural wine cellar spread over two levels. In the summer months the attractive sun terrace tempts diners out into the fresh air.
In addition to the renowned game and goose festival weeks, the idyllically located Gasthof Gütle is also best-known for three classic dishes: the prime boiled rump of beef, the excellent braised beef and onions and the fried calf’s liver. The accompaniments are also worthy of mention: home-made rösti are extraordinarily crunchy on the outside and aromatic and silky on the inside. Of course the Schupfnudeln (finger-shaped potato dumplings) and gnocchi are home-made by the owner Artur Rüscher as well. Proprietor Bettina Rüscher grows the kitchen herbs herself on the terrace and likes to experiment with different types of basil. And she also compiled the excellent wine menu.

GOOD, OLD-FASHIONED FOOD more adresses > p. 74
What do we mean by ‘good, old-fashioned’ food? We mean: this is not food for fast-foodies, for hunters of something new, for unfussy lunchtime scoffers or - in general - people with uneducated taste buds. Good, old-fashioned food means taking the time to enjoy with friends and family, to appreciate the food and to be a good guest. Like the sound of that? Then come with us to eight of Dornbirn’s best purveyors of good, old-fashioned food.

Gabriel Venturiello is a master of selection and composition. The proprietor personally seeks out the finest ingredients, following his own motto – only what he would want to eat himself finds its way to his kitchen and into the skilled hands of head chef Hannes Nebel, who critically checks the dishes before they are served to the guests. Gabriel’s philosophy: a ‘Cucina della Nonna’ with simple ingredients, fresh and seasonal. The menu features, for example, Florentine tripe and delicious pasta from small manufacturers, seasonally enriched with ingredients his family brings with them from their homeland of Campania. The menu changes at least six times each year and there are also daily recommendations of the patron.
Located beside an old village fountain in the Mühlebach district, the 130-year-old Gasthaus Schiffle is a fine address for connoisseurs. The Kanner family and their competent staff serve up a successful mix of the traditional and the new. Meat and fish are always of excellent quality and matched with the perfect accompaniments and the desserts are heavenly. At lunchtime, there is a superb small set menu for a moderate price, for example consommé with chopped pancakes, meatloaf with potato purée – a guarantee of happiness for anyone. The restaurant and bar areas are of a manageable size and therefore have a relaxed charm, never hectic – an ideal location for a small celebration or a cosy family meal.
It doesn’t get more classic than this – the Rote Haus is the epitome of good, old-fashioned food in the heart of the city centre, where it has stood for more than 370 years in Marktplatz, the heart of all social life in the city. Of course, it is not just the museum-like architectural character of the Rotes Haus that makes it so well-loved by many generations of locals and by visitors from near and far: Austrian cuisine with special culinary accents, traditional dishes, such as calf’s liver, fried breaded chicken, Wiener schnitzel, steak tartar and Kaiserschmarrn (lit: Emperor’s chopped pancakes). A professional and courteous service team are on hand to fulfil their guests’ every wish and ensure the delivery of exquisite good, old-fashioned food.
A beer garden with chestnut trees, shaded by most certainly the biggest – and heated! – garden umbrella in the city, the Bierlokal is a popular haunt for strollers around the city centre, located as it is directly on Marktstraße. Because a beer garden only has a short season in this less than tropical corner of the globe, the inside of the recently renovated Bierlokal is also extremely inviting and even has a bar where smoking is permitted. The Bierlokal is best-known for its speciality weeks, which change every 14 days. For example ‘grandma’s kitchen’, ‘old Austrian classics’, ‘dumplings galore’, ‘delicious delights from lamb, game, beef and fowl’ - in short: frequent change without neglecting good, old-fashioned cooking traditions.

Both young and old love the Kässpätzle at the Kohler Eck. The selection of varieties is large and ranges from Zwiebelrostbraten (braised beef with onions) with Kässpätzle to Ananaskässpätzle (with pineapple) to Kässpätzle with chanterelle mushrooms. The Kohler Eck is a family-run business, the members of which have jointly reigned over the restaurant for 13 years. In emergencies, each of them can do everything. And when push comes to shove, the chefs, service personnel and management operate as smoothly together as cogs in a machine. The chef also prepares superb salads. The variety is enormous and the dressings are home-made. As is virtually everything else.

The Krone in Kehlegg has all the flair of an old-fashioned local tavern: traditional decorative paintings on the walls, fireplace in the middle of the room, low wooden ceilings. The regular clientele are the village community, from lawyer to cattle dealer. On the menu are smaller dishes for smaller appetites, such as traditional ‘Lumpensalat’ (sausage salad) or wiener sausage, or if pre-ordered traditional ‘Hafoloab’ (semolina dumplings) with bacon. Another tradition is the ‘Stehachtele’. Glasses from which the last glass of wine is drunk – standing, because the glasses are curved and can not be placed on the table. A charming way to finish the evening.
The name of this establishment is as original as the motto of owner Belinda Blessing: ‘Eat here or we will both starve’. In reality, no one will starve. For example Spaghetti Mondays, when guests can fill up on Spaghetti Bolognese for EUR 3.90. But Bethlehem is really famous for its Schnitzels, from Wiener schnitzel to vegan vegetable schnitzel. And if that is not enough to satisfy your hunger, the 600 gram schnitzel with the works is to be recommended. Too much for you? That is what aluminium foil was invented for. Simply wrap it up and take it with you and your snack for the following day is in the bag.
If Haselstauden was a village then the Schäfle is the village public house. Small, more than 40 people would not fit in. An establishment – still – for smokers, in which the doctor and the labourer still eat and drink. One that is not quite like any other. Since January it has a new leaseholder and with him comes a slightly Mediterranean breeze – his parents are Italian. The new menu contains, for example, spaghetti with seafood, if pre-ordered also paella. Otherwise guests can expect hearty, traditional food, washed down with beer.

Ayhan Bicki serves excellent Turkish food in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere at his new retaurant Cuma Grill, located in close proximity to the University of Applied Sciences. The charcoal grill is lit on Fridays and Saturdays, making the Turkish grill specialities and home-made lahmacun and pide taste even more delicious and authentic. There are also many vegetarian dishes, lunchtime set menus, superb coffee and a speedy take-away service, making this restaurant not only popular with the nearby students and professors. The large community of fans are kept constantly up-to-date via Facebook, and when the announcement is made, ‘Ocakbasi hazir – the grill is ready’, everyone’s mouth starts watering.
Ganbei is located right in the heart of Marktplatz with views of the Rotes Haus and Martinskirche (St Martin’s Church) and serves up delicious Asian specialities from China, Japan and Thailand. The menu contains dishes such as steamed black halibut with special house sauce, lamb chops grilled with yellow curry sauce or wok-fried giant prawns with black pepper sauce, as well as a range of sushi, sashimi and maki. There are also well-known classics such as Peking duck and chicken curry. Special mention should be made of the extensive wine menu at Ganbei, which contains top-notch Austrian wines as well as genuine rarities from around the world. There is also a large selection of hot and cold tea specialities.
Pasta Fresca serves top quality Italian specialities and fresh pasta dishes. However, many of the regular customers come here for the fresh seafood dishes. From hand-caught giant prawns to bio-seafood, or the ever-popular branzini or turbot caught in sustainable fisheries. Giovanni Accoto selects fresh produce every day and concocts the ideal accompaniments. The dishes on the menu read like poetry: capelli del prete ai formaggi con gamberi pescati, pomodorini e specie, for example. There are delicious set menus every lunchtime and on Mondays there is a lavish antipasti buffet. Fresh bread is baked daily from self-ground bio-spelt and rye.
Dornbirn does not only have a good commercial relationship with all regions of the world, it is also always open to something new from a culinary perspective and is always willing to try delicacies from remote, far-flung lands. A new addition to the culinary offerings in the city is the Mongolian specialities on offer at Manna, for example ‘Khuushuur’ – spicy beef mince wrapped in crispy pastry – or ‘Buuz’ – steamed dumplings filled with either meat or a vegetarian option. The menu also contains a colourful mix of dishes from Thailand, Korea, Japan and China – everything that tastes good is allowed. Manna also operates a take away service or will also deliver anywhere within Dornbirn, simply call and order.

LET’S GO TO A TEA PARTY IN WONDERLAND TEXT › MIRIAM JAENEKE PHOTOGRAPHY › LUKAS HÄMMERLE, MATTHIAS RHOMBERG
With the irrepressible March Hare and Mad Hatter, where time stands still. Although not a single soul can be seen far and wide to take a seat at their table, the pair cry out, ‘No room! No room!’ The invitation, whether it be to a tea party, glass of wine or sumptuous cocktail, in Dornbirn there will be plenty of room at the table at the establishments listed on the following pages. It may be that many of the seats are already taken, however all guests coming to join the party are always made to feel very welcome! With its cosy atmosphere, this classic pub allows you to leave all your worries outside the door. The large jukebox is reminiscent of times long ago, before WhatsApp, before tweets, before stress. Talking of memories: many guests spent formative hours of their teenage years at Erika. They have remained loyal stalwarts at this establishment and are still coming to this day. What the current retro trend imitates, is here in original. Erika is open every day, from afternoon through to midnight.
Didi has been running this bar for more than 10 years. However, he sees himself more as a host than a landlord. He does not see the clientele as paying guests, rather as family – no one sits on their own. Didi is a people-person and his bar is his living room. He has many roles here: landlord, DJ, friend and confidant. The Kellerbar is a little like a motorcycle club charter. However here there are no prospects, everyone is part of the crew from the very first visit. For entertainment, there is a dart board, gaming machines and table football.

7ER-BAR.AT
A café that opens at 7.30 am and stays open until 8 pm. A café that allows smoking. A café that is proud to be the oldest of its kind in Dornbirn. Café Fredy has occupied the same spot opposite the Hauptbahnhof since 1969. However, its main clientele are not travellers, rather regulars that have called this their second home for many years, through thick and thin. They meet in the mornings for a game of cards. For liquid refreshment, there is everything from coffee to beer, for sustenance guests can order toasted sandwiches, Viennese sausage or goulash soup.
Admittedly, the clothes worn by visitors to this club are a little on the dark side. However, the guests at the 7er are a very colourful mix. The youngest is probably about 16, the oldest 80. The one thing that unites all of them is their love for music. Those preferring chart music will not be at home here. Some evenings you will find DJs at the turntables rocking the public, with themed evenings with suggestive titles such as ‘Turn up the power – Battle of the drumhead’ or ‘Rocking back to Kingston – Ska, Reggae, Rocksteady’. This bar is open long into the night.

The movie theme is an ever-present at the Klappe. Screen stars look down from the walls and over the shoulders of the guests into their glasses. Guests drink in the finest of company, even if they come on their own. Otherwise the bar has a rustic flair. In summer, life is moved outside. A good opportunity for a spot of people-watching. When the Klappe is open, there are always plenty of passers-by mindfully carrying out their business on the busy Marktstraße. Those that break rank and head for the Klappe know why.
The T!VOLI is as multi-cultural as some state summit meetings and a whole lot more comfortable. In addition to local speciality beers, guests here can enjoy a glass of Irish export legend Guinness. Every major event from around the globe is celebrated here. The St. Patricks Day party includes an Irish-folk concert. The Champions League is also shown live. What has T!VOLI qualified for? A bar, a café, a club, a label – the Anziehbar is many things, but never boring. Located in the heart of the city, you can party here until 3 in the morning. If you can manage it, you will be welcomed back at 7.30 for breakfast – as long as you’ve managed to change your shirt in the meantime. But that is also simple at the Anziehbar. Just get yourself a new one from the T-shirt vending machine. Another good reason for a visit is the host of international live acts, ranging from folk and country to jazz and hip-hop. Students are always welcome and celebrate their own theme parties.
The Gasthaus Engel can look back on more than one hundred years of history. It has been in family ownership since 1906. Innumerable faces have walked through the door, many lives have been enriched by the name Engel. It is the social melting pot of Dornbirn. After a long day’s work the bank manager drinks alongside the apprentice welder. And what brings people to the Engel? Friendship, blues and rock & roll. You want more? There are live concerts twice each month, with names such as, for example, the neo-psychedelic band The Holy Spirit of Nothing.

Back in the days of the monarchy the area surrounding the Conrad Sohm was a bit like the Silicon Valley of its time. Cabarets, live concerts by international artists or excessive club nights with renowned DJs – since time immemorial this grand club has been providing entries for diaries and photos for Facebook walls. And with this year’s ‘Kultursommer’ festival fast approaching, expect a whole lot more!
Once each month is children’s disco: kids from 0 to 10 are invited to dance away to age-appropriate music and even take the microphone in hand and sing along. Our open-mic evenings are also very relaxed. Each adult has 15 minutes to demonstrate their skills as poet slammer, author, poet, dancer, musician, singer-songwriter, juggler or simply to gather stage experience, test out their talents or simply to come back on stage because they enjoyed it so much the last time. And if you enjoy each small production of the house, please watch and applaud.

RATHAUSPLATZ 2
VIEHMARKTPLATZ
Toni’s Schnellimbiss is an institution in Dornbirn. Unsurprisingly so, as it has been an ever-present on Rathausplatz for the last 20 years, offering those going home and those going out, delicious snacks such as the well-loved ‘Filetbrötchen’ (pork fillet with garlic sauce on bread). The current owner took over the business from his father, whose name it still carries. He grew up in the trailer. The whole thing is a family operation, he says. Quite simple, because the employees in the meantime have all become members of the family. There are also other classics on the menu, such as burgers, ZackZack and currywurst.
Zum Charly offers the tried and trusted: the menu has not changed for countless years. There’s breaded mushrooms and breaded cauliflower. ZackZack (thin pork steak with spicy sauce in bread), the Hawaii burger, currywurst with bread. And french fries with ketchup and bread and, the most popular item on the menu, the ‘Spanish hotdog’. Students at the BORG high school order the grilled pork schnitzel with garlic sauce, as do the apprentices at the company Zumtobel, the firemen and policemen. All the clientele agree on one thing: tried and trusted must not necessarily be changed.

The motto at Helli’s Imbiss is written on the wall: ‘Home is where your heart is’. If this is true, the home of the owner is without a doubt his snack bar, and good home cooking is what is offered to his guests. Like the speciality of the house, special burger with cheese and salad. And the well-loved ‘Filetbrot’ with pork schnitzel. Also on the menu are hotdogs, kebabs with french fries or traditional soup with noodles made from liver. In the summer the children just love the play area and the parents can enjoy the generously-sized garden.
The Mir Imbiss immodestly shows a crown on its logo. Indeed, it is kings of good taste that provide the speedy snacks here: in addition to pizza, hamburgers and currywurst (sausage with curry sauce), there are also Turkish grill delights, such as pirzola, lamb chops with rice and salad. Who are the customers? Anyone from construction workers to families with children. The children enjoy the small play area, where they can play on the seesaw. However, not everyone comes here. Some simply pick up the phone and make use of Mir’s delivery service.

They are here and will soon go away and – who knows? – perhaps never return … Another scenario: they were here, then they were gone, and now? Now they are back again … Or yet another scenario: they never went away, simply just stayed on. Who? The young creative souls, Vorarlberg’s authors, musicians, contemporary artists, filmmakers, actors and designers, who have always been creatively active here or who – perhaps – went to Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz or Vienna or maybe even abroad to study, or maybe simply to be far away
from here in order to gain new inspiration, spread their wings, and then upon their return – hopefully – find the conditions that make it possible to live from their creative activities and to show the world what they have learned and experienced over the last few years. A city stands and falls above all with its young, creative talent. We have had a look around Dornbirn and asked some young artists that were born or live here what inspires them, what they like about Dornbirn and how they are getting on in Austria’s tenth largest city.

MAYA RINDERER 21 years-old, author and student of ancient oriental studies, mother tongue: German and Hebrew, favourite cities: Vienna, Dornbirn and Tel Aviv. Favourite places in Dornbirn: Dornbirner Ach, Bank am Müllerbach.
Maya likes to allow mathematical concepts inspire her to write poetry, she loves evenings of extended discussions, the texts of Sylvia Plath and the jour fixe with her friends from the ‘young scene’ of literature in Vorarlberg. Her roots are extraordinarily diverse: her father Reinhard is a born- and bred Vorarlberger, her mother Ada originally comes from Israel, her grandmother is from Aleppo and her grandfather is a Hungarian Jew who sur-
vived the holocaust. Her first ever poem, which Maya wrote at the age of six, was called ‘Feuer’. When she was fifteen she published her debut, ‘Esther’, a novel in excess of 350 pages about the struggle of a Jewish girl to survive the days of National Socialism. Moreover, this exceptional literary talent has also already published two volumes of poetry, ‘An alle Variablen’ and ‘Standardabweichungen’.

CHRISTINE KATSCHER 30 years-old, artist and resident of Dornbirn by choice, head of the ‘Druckwerk’ in Lustenau, publisher of the comic magazine ‘FRANZ – the lonely austrionaut’.
She draws, photographs and prints, allows herself to be inspired as much by office rooms as by house walls and exposed facades, loves permanent exchange, stimulating changes of location, her boyfriend, the Dornbirn artist Pirmin Hagen, and working as part of a collective. Born in Vienna, she moved to Dornbirn three years ago, to be with her boyfriend and during this time has already had several individual exhibitions of her work. Her current work, ‘die kleine Geschichte eines Bildes’ (a short histo-

ry of a picture), can be seen in the ORF-Landesfunkhaus building. Christine Katscher completed her studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Vienna in graphics and printmaking techniques. After completing her diploma, she relocated for one year in Edinburgh in order to study the concept of an open print workshop, before implementing this concept in Vorarlberg. Here she values the transparency of the art scene and the many opportunities of realising art projects.

KIN Rock band based in Dornbirn with a brand new acoustic album, a Styrian (Florian Koller, singer), a Vorarlberger (Roland Reininger, guitarist), another Vorarlberger (Marcel Holzer, drummer) and a Mexican (Adrian de la Torre, bassist).
After their successful debut as a singer-songwriter duo, nine years ago Florian Koller and Roland Reininger won a music competition, which brought them an appearance at the Nova Rock Festival. That was when they realised that they needed a band! The name: KIN (yellow, cosmic sun of the Mayans) may well have been thought up by singer, lyricist and astrologist Florian Koller. Since 2013/14 Marcel Holzer and Adrian de la Torre have been part of the group. KIN is a hobby band, although you would not notice it. Variety is more important than stylistic purity. The debut album ‘KIN’ (2012) had a very
hard-edged sound, however the band are now opening their softer side and have even forsaken the electric guitars. One of the guests on the new album is none other than accordion virtuoso Goran Kovacevic. A particular feature of the new album: a high degree of polyphony! In the past, the band have appeared at venues such as Conrad Sohm and at the Szene open-air fesival; ‘Duality’ was presented on the 25th of March at the Kulturwerkstatt Kammgarn in Hard, followed by a small tour of Austria, with appearances in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Klagenfurt and, on the 24th of May, at Frei in Dornbirn.

AARON PILSAN 21 years-old, one of the leading pianists of his generation, ‘Young Artist of the Year 2011’, ‘Rising Star 2014/15’, appearances at some of the most important concert halls in Europe, 2014: first solo album featuring works by Schubert and Beethoven, this year the Naive record label is releasing his second CD. Attribute: ‘astute sensibility’, ‘distinct personality’.
Which career could you imagine for yourself if you were not a pianist/musician? Philosopher and property investor, but I couldn’t live without music. Which music gives you the goose bumps? The closing adagio of Mahler’s 3rd symphony. In your opinion, what makes a ‘great’ pianist? A great pianist is for me someone who, on the one hand, has the knowledge required to recognise the character of the works of a composer and, on the other hand, has the emotional breadth to empathise authentically with their content, as well as, of course, having the technical ability required in order to implement these things in his
performance. This requires a great deal of imagination! What do you associate with Dornbirn? My home town. To date, what has been your personal favourite concert appearance? A piano evening in the small hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as part of the ‘Rising Stars’. I was possessed, as if overcome by fever. How do you cope with stage fright? I rarely suffer from stage fright; however I practice autogenic training and do a few psychological exercises before an appearance. Do you have a dream ambition? Yes, to play at the Carnegie Hall in New York.
Leidenschaftlich. Gut. Beraten.

inatura, Vorarlberg’s most visited museum, is a unique concept. Nature, human being and technology can be experienced interactively and are made ‘apperceptive’. In addition, as the centre for documentation of the natural world of Vorarlberg, inatura also possesses extensive collections, which are accessible to specialists for scientific study. Furthermore, regular specialist courses and lectures are offered under the theme of ‘the variety of nature’. The special exhibition ‘Auf leisen Pfoten – Raubtiere des Alpenraums’ (‘On silent paws - predators of the Alps’) opened on the 24th of March. This promises a glimpse into the lives of the lynx, fox, wolf and company and will show the key role of the predator in the various ecosystems.
The Nativity Crib Museum is housed in a 150-year-old renovated stable known as the ‘Glockenstadel’, located directly by the entrance to Rappenloch gorge. The Nativity Crib Museum in Dornbirn is home to over one hundred nativity and religious scenes and crib figurine groups from four continents. Some of the items of the collection date back as far as 1812. One special exhibit is the 16 m2 Easter Nativity Crib constructed by the Italian Nativity crib artist Antonio Pigozzi and commissioned by the Dornbirner Krippenverein. Around 10,000 visitors from around the world find their way each year to the museum, which also contains a Nativity Crib shop where visitors can buy the various works of art offered by the Dornbirner Krippenverein. Each piece is unique. The Nativity Crib Museum can be visited free-of-charge with the Dornbirn Card, Vorarlberg Card and the BodenseeErlebniskarte.
Founded by the son of a mountain farmer from the Montafon valley, Franz Vonier, the world’s largest Rolls-Royce museum is home to an in-house showroom workshop, a tea room with rosewood furniture, rare motorcycles and original Rolls-Royce motor vehicles. The vehicles with famous previous owners include a safari touring car owned by King George V, a landau that belonged to the Queen Mum and the private vehicle once owned by F.H. Royce. The special atmosphere provided by the historic F.M. Hämmerle textile factory in combination with the exquisite technology and craftsmanship make this museum a very special experience, time and time again. There is also a Rolls-Royce available for journeys of all kinds.

Housed in the 200-year-old Lorenz-Rhomberg-Haus, the Stadtmuseum Dornbirn is a true house of history. It has been awarded the prestigious Austrian ‘Museumsgütesiegel’ quality award on three occasions. The many archaeological finds, photo collections and items of the permanent collection help describe the history of the city and its inhabitants. The thematic focus of the collection is the international textile pattern archive, which currently comprises more than 400,000 items. The permanent exhibition is complemented every year by special exhibitions on local historic and folkloric themes. In addition the museum houses a specialist library, a reading room, study collections and an interactive database, offering those interested in Dornbirn a plethora of information.

The artist that is his own exhibition. The main body of the museum’s collection is formed by works either gifted by or on permanent loan from the artist FLATZ. It contains key works from the oeuvre of FLATZ from the years 1975 to 1999. The museum is recognised as a forum with moveable structures for the exchange of artistic positions. It presents changing exhibitions conceived by international guest curators. Events, such as performances, readings, series of lectures and discussions, are an integral component of the concept. ‘Lyrik bei FLATZ’ is currently being performed for the 6th time this year in the inspiring atmosphere of the FLATZ-Museum and FLATZ-Bar.
Kunstraum Dornbirn is actively involved in the field of contemporary visual art and reflects the current movements on modern art. The exhibition space is the assembly hall of the former Rüschwerke factory in Dornbirn’s Stadtgarten area. When possible, the art installations are created on-site by the artists themselves. The guiding theme is ‘Art and Nature’. This year four exhibitions have been scheduled: Asta Gröting, 17th March to 14th May; Hans Op de Beeck, 2nd June to 10th September; Steinbrener, Dempf & Huber, 22nd September to 3rd December; Aljoscha, 15th December to 20th February 2018. Kunstraum offers special programmes for its visitors as part of the interpretation of the artworks.
Quadrart has been active in Dornbirn’s Oberdorf region as an exciting venue for contemporary art since 2009. The form of presentation is constantly changing. Meaningful dialogue is encouraged through exhibitions, projects, lectures and discussions. The basis for exhibition projects is formed by the private art collection of Erhard Witzel. Constantly changing curators each choose one aspect from the collection and confront this with contemporary art. This year we will once again be presenting four exhibitions under the format ‘aspects’: we begin with the exhibition ‘Black & White’ (18th March to 7th May), followed by ‘Nur Glas?’ (21st May to 23rd July). In the autumn we will be holding the second ‘Dialog’ in cooperation with the vorarlberg museum.

The ‘c’ stands for contemporary. Established in 1989 and managed by Belinda Boch-Prantl and Johannes Boch, the gallery c.art specialises in contemporary art by international artists such as Gottfried Honegger, Cédric Teisseire, Markus Prachensky or Gottfried Bechtold. Representatives of the classic modern genre are presented individually. Even the building itself, a striking cube directly in the heart of Dornbirn city centre and within which the gallery has been housed for ten years, is a work of art. It was designed by the architect Ernst Hiesmayr in 1968. It was the first house with two load-bearing exposed concrete columns. Having set up the gallery’s own publishing house, the couple also publish their own catalogues, art calendars and postcards.
