DORNBIRN, AS IT LIVES AND BREATHES What do you think about when you think of Dornbirn? Urban culture? A nice meal? Long party nights? Shopping and cosy cafés? Or family outings in the countryside? Dornbirn offers all this in abundance and to the tried and tested gems of city life, there are always combinations of new locations and inspiration. Beginning with a small section about Dornbirn’s history and curiosities such as the big error about the pears or the fact that one Dornbirn emigrant became one of America’s most important financial moguls. Straight to the present with original impressions of the stylistically confident and dynamic Dornbirn fashion scene. “Mix and match” of the highest standard is maybe a good summary. Genuine originals are the passionate “DIY enthusiasts” with dedicated virtuosity from coffee bean roasting to forging, cherishing their handicrafts, newly interpreted and further developed. They, as well as their products are “Made in Dornbirn”. Out of the city (but not out of Dornbirn) are our guiding tips for passionate hikers and lovers of the countryside. A total of 42 alps encompasses the municipal area! Five really beautiful alps are presented this time

including snack offers (fluid and solid). Our sightseeing offers lead you to going high up, through deep gorges and to admire covered places of interest. There are also good tips for those who just need some exercise or sport activity on the spur of the moment. The cultural section of the magazine is very much in the spirit of the place and space as well as those who think, who work and are connected personally. It is about the exciting but not always easy work of young architects and the great importance of space for the urban attitude to life, reports Verena Konrad from the Vorarlberg Institute of Architecture, who is the curator of the Austria Pavilion of the Architecture Biennial in Venice this year. Artists and creative artists tell us under the motto of “favourite place” where they always go to in Dornbirn. Really opulent is the numerous cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs, from the breakfast Croissant to wining and dining, fantasy drinks and to sweat it all out, everything what the urban heart desires. Connoisseurs and explorers will have just as much enjoyment following our forays through the culinary domains and Dornbirn’s night life: Have fun reading, trying things out and enjoying Dornbirn!

The very different characterised districts of Markt, Hatlerdorf, Oberdorf, Haselstauden, Rohrbach and Schoren are residential, business and educational localities with high standards of living. The business centres are located in the inner city as well as the trade- and industrial parks of Fischbach, Kehlerpark, Rhombergs Fabrik, Schwefel, Steinebach and Wallenmahd. The city centre is mainly dominated with attractive shops and localities for night owls: numerous shops, a huge variety of gastronomy for all tastes and a colourful calendar of events livening the Marktplatz and the big pedestrian area, which has been free of traffic for 28 years now. In the past decades, an internationally known business location has developed in the city’s south-west. Here is also the modern extended trade exhibition centre for exhibitions and events and Vorarlberg’s biggest shopping centre Messepark and well-known trading enterprises. DORNBIRN TALES TEXT Daniel Zauser

Dornbirn has many unique and curious tales to tell. What is striking is that the bizarre and whimsical often needs a little distance in order to be perceived as such, whether this distance is historical, geographical or merely down to the eye of the beholder. In the following we present a colourful mix of peculiar stories about Dornbirn and the people of Dornbirn, which are rooted in history and bloom to this day. We give special thanks to Werner Matt from the Dornbirn city archive and Martin Rhomberg. The main literature sources are the Dornbirn Lesebuch (published by Ulrich Gabriel and Werner Matt), ”Von Dornbirn in die neue Welt“ by Meinrad Pichler and numerous editions of Dornbirner Schriften.

THE THING WITH THE PEARS The fact that Dornbirn’s coat of arms bears a pear tree is the result of a linguistic misunderstanding dating back to the 17th century. The Habsburgs, finding themselves somewhat stretched financially as a result of the 30-years war, decided in 1655 to sell the Dornbirn court to Count Karl Friedrich von Hohenems. The contract had already been signed, however the people of Dornbirn were not at all happy. They were so horror-stricken by the idea of the impending dominion under Hohenems rule that, on the day of the hand-over, there was a veritable popular uprising and Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Tirol was called upon to dissolve the contract. To this end Dornbirn offered the Archduke a loan of 8,000 guilder – and issued a demand, amongst others, for its own coat of arms. The court chancellery in Innsbruck did not know the origin of the name ‘Dornbirn’, which

first appears in a St. Gallen charter from the year 895 as ‘Torrinpuirron’, which means ‘settlement of the Torro’. The end part of this name, which over the centuries has evolved to ‘-burron’, ‘-büren’, ‘-beuren’, ‘-biern’ and finally to ‘-birn’, therefore means ‘settlement’ and has nothing to do with the word ‘Birne’, which is German for pear, the fruit. Dornbirn remained in possession of the Habsburgs and the pear tree on the coat of arms, together with the numerous juicy fruits it bears, seems to have pleased all those involved. Who the middle-age people of the ‘Torro’ were – well, nobody seems to know that to this day. PS: With regard to the rumour that the number of pears on the tree is of significance – i.e. that it is a reference to the number of districts in Dornbirn – this isn’t true. The city has 6 districts today, and with only 5 fruits on the tree there is a shortage of pears.

THE FIRST PERMANENT CINEMATOGRAPH After several years of showing the very earliest film presentations in large halls or tents during annual markets or travelling circuses, Vorarlberg’s first dedicated cinema hall, or cinematograph, with a daily programme was opened on Marktplatz by Johann Senorer in 1910. It was the first to open only by a whisker, because a mere two months later the town of Feldkirch followed suit. But nonetheless. The successor to the cinematograph followed a short time later in the form of the Weltkino

in Bahnhofstraße (from 1912) and then in the Weltlichtspiele in Schulgasse, which opened in 1936 and remained in operation until 2011. Despite the great death of the cinema since the turn of the millennium, the film culture is still alive and kicking in Dornbirn. Fans of film can still enjoy genuine cinematic treats that set themselves apart from the modern generic superhero miscellany in the programmes put together by the Filmclub Dornbirn at Cinema 2000 and at the Spielbodenkino.

THE TALE OF THE DEAR COW AND THE SCHNAPPS Dornbirn’s cows have not been driven away by industrialisation, nor by urbanisation. To this day Dornbirn is – and with an increasing tendency – the Vorarlberg municipality with the most cows. In the year 2015 there were 3,757, compared to 2,666 cows in the year 1970. Another fact that people, not part of the agricultural community, do not know is that schnapps was and still is a traditional home remedy for the treatment of any complaint, above all flatulence, diarrhoea, colds and fevers, however also for the strengthening of cows after calving. For this reason the privilege of the ‘farm distillery’ was introduced in the year 1835, which permitted farmers to produce alcohol tax-free from their own fruit harvest, the amount of which was dependent on the size of the

farm and the number of employees. By all accounts it was the case in Dornbirn that the permitted amount of alcohol was determined not only on the number of farm employees, rather the number of cows on the farm was also included in calculations on the permitted amount of alcohol that a farmer could produce. The importance of the well-being of the cattle of Dornbirn is also demonstrated by an article that appeared in the Vorarlberger Volksblatt of 10 July 1902. After an automobile race held at that time along the former Reichsstraße, the cows housed in the adjacent stalls took an entire three days to recover from the shock caused by the unfamiliar roar of the car engines. Faced with this awful situation, perhaps a schnapps or two may have helped them.

100 DIFFERENT LETTERS WERE NECESSARY … … in order to adequately express in writing the profuse dialect of the people of Dornbirn. This was in any case the opinion of Eugen Gabriel in 1997. The basis for this estimate was a thorough study of the works of the Dornbirn-dialect poet Armin Diem, whose textualizations were praised due to the confined circumstances under which they were written: “Our alphabet has 24 [sic!] letters, necessary would have been more than 100!” However, the introduction of a special Dornbirn alphabet would not be very sensible, Gabriel suggested, because: “This would have such an unusual type face that nobody would be able to read a word; in any case no normal printer would have such an abundance of special characters”. There is also a particular peculiarity with regard to the

pronunciation of the numbers 2 and 3. In respect of this, Armin Diem pointed out in the preface to his book Dornbirner Heimatbuch in alemannischer Mundart the deviations in pronunciation depending on the gender and case of the noun that is qualified. With masculine nouns, the number 2 is pronounced ‘zwio’, with feminine nouns ‘zwo’ and with neuter nouns ‘zwoa’. In the third case declension ‘zwai’ or also ‘zwoi’. The number 3 is relatively straightforward in comparison: with both masculine and feminine nouns it remains as in written German ‘drei’, however in the case of neuter nouns the pronunciation changes to ‘drü’. This means: prick up your ears and listen carefully to whether the modern-day Dornbirner still adheres to these singularities of Dornbirn dialect.

THE FIRST SKI LIFT IN THE ALPS Although the Bödele politically belongs to the commune of Schwarzenberg, it was pioneers from Dornbirn who put in place the prerequisites for skiing. Where the Lankschanze ski jump sits today, the first ski jump was created in 1904 on heaped up mounds. And in 1906 the first official ski race in Vorarlberg took place on the Bödele with hundreds of spectators. This was described in the Dornbirner Schriften (no. 32, 2006) as “a combination of downhill race and jump competition”. These

events and the popularity of the growing sport of skiing obviously inspired the two Dornbirn-based engineers Hugo Rhomberg and Alfred Rüsch to construct an ascent assistance mechanism. The toboggan lift first used in the winter of 1907/08 was the first mechanical ski lift anywhere in the entire Alpine region. It was driven by a 5-horsepower combustion engine and had a capacity of 40 people per hour.

A RHOMBERG AVENUE IN IOWA? Josef Andrä Rhomberg, known in America simply as Joe, emigrated in the mid-1850s to the faraway town of Dubuque in Iowa, where the elegant Rhomberg Avenue reminds us of him to this present day. At the beginning he opened the most successful saloon in Dubuque. His marketing idea: with every whiskey you get a free cigar. With this strategy Rhomberg quickly became one of the richest citizens of the town. From 1865, after the end of

the American Civil War, Joe Rhomberg concentrated on wholesaling in schnapps; he founded his own distillery and a brewery. As a result of the community of Dornbirners already established there as of the mid-1850s, Dubuque became destination number 1 in America for most people emigrating there from Dornbirn. As a result the town became the largest foreign Dornbirner community and since 2013 Dubuque is a twin town of Dornbirn.

12

THE DREXEL FAMILY: BANKERS, UNIVERSITY FOUNDERS AND SAINTS One Dornbirner who emigrated as early as 1817 was Franz Martin Drexel, whose experiences in America really were an adventure, starting with his arrival in Philadelphia. After all kinds of exploits, which took him amongst other places to Latin America as an unsuccessful portrait painter, Drexel returned to Philadelphia in 1837 and opened a highly successful bureau of exchange for the, at that time, highly diverse bank notes issued by the various American banks. Benefiting from the gold rush and the American Civil War, as well as from the immense sums required for the construction of the American railroads, Drexel’s bank grew by the 1870s into one of the most successful financial institutions in Amer-

ica. Drexel’s son Anthony Joseph made Jean Pierpont Morgan a partner and head of the New York branch and was, according to Meinrad Pichler, until his death one of the most powerful bankers in America. Additionally, he also founded the ‘Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry’, the predecessor to the highly successful and respected ‘Drexel University’ in Philadelphia. But it gets even better: Katharine Drexel, a granddaughter of Franz Martin, used her substantial inheritance for benevolent societal causes and missionary works and was canonised by the Vatican in the year 2000! In 2010 the baptistery in Hatlerdorf was consecrated and renamed the Katharine Drexel Chapel.

Clothes make the man (and of course the woman), as the phrase goes. However, people must first make the clothes. And then there are those who, with an eye for quality and good taste, carefully select what they wish to offer to their customers. This applies equally to trendy sneakers right through to elegant evening wear including accessories. What is pleasing, popular and establishes itself, this becomes fashion. The ancient aphorism vita brevis, ars longa [life is short, art is long] had to be re-coined many years ago for the fashion industry: vita brevis, ornatus breviores – life is short, fashion is shorter. And the world of fashion has also for many years spawned its own breed of nerds

– they call them ‘fashion victims’, who always want to be the first, the only, the most special. Perpetual trendsetters, constantly reinventing themselves as soon as the trend actually reaches the masses. By contrast, at the other end of the spectrum are those who only consider buying something new when their clothes reach an appropriate degree of threadbareness or colour fade, and even then indignantly. Irrespective of which type you are, on the following pages you will find an inspiring selection of what the fashion paradise of Dornbirn has to offer, whether you merely want to spice up your own personal style or invest in a complete change of fashion. Read, enjoy, amaze!

Mountain hiking — food for the soul and for the belly TEXT Miriam Jaeneke

Who would have thought it? There are 42 alps in the region of Dornbirn, from A, as in Ammenegg, to W, as in Weißenfluh. A lot? It certainly is. We have selected five of these and will tell you how to get there and what you can expect to be rewarded with. For the hiker the hike is both physical exercise and of benefit to the soul, however for the mountain folk it means hard work every day – especially when it comes to taking care of their guests. So it is not only the destination that is the goal, the lunch break at the top also offers plenty to look forward to. 23

Schwende Alpe With Watzenegg as your starting point, walk in the direction of Palmern. You will reach the summit of the Schwendealpe after approximately 40 minutes. This moderately difficult hike will take you up to an elevation of 910 metres above sea level. The reward for your efforts is not only the princely views, that is at least for those reaching the summit after half past eight in the morning between the end of April and the beginning of November. The chalet-style restaurant at the summit prepares ‘Most’ [apple/pear cider] especially for its guests. There

are also plenty of homemade cakes and flans, as well as local classics such as ‘Lumpensalat’ [sausage/cheese salad]. They can also cook you some ‘Kässpätzle, [cheese pasta], however only if ordered in advance. level of difficulty moderate time 32 min distance 1,38 km altitude 210 m

24

Kobel Alpe The summit of the Kobel Alpe lies 973 metres above sea level. From the direction of Gütle it can be reached either via Niedere, Durchstich and Dannerbruck, with experienced hikers turning left to the Kobel after the fork in the road. Alternatively, the destination can also be reached by simply carrying straight on along the road. This moderately difficult hike will take approximately 50 minutes via Niedere and Metzgers Köbele to the Kobel. To eat when you arrive are classic local dishes such as ‘Brettljause’ [sausage, ham and cheese], a cheese platter with goats’

cheese, or ‘Käsknöpfle’ [cheese pasta] when ordered in advance. The hut restaurant is open Wednesdays to Fridays from midday and for as long as guests are there. At weekends it is open from 10 a.m. Between 1 October and 1 May the ‘Alpe’ is open on Fridays as well as weekends. level of difficulty moderate time 53 min distance 2,84 km altitude 230 m

Lustenauer Hütte The Lustenauer Hütte is located above Schwarzenberg. It is reachable in about an hour by foot from the Älpele car park on the Bödele. The Spechtweg hiking trail takes you in the direction of the Hämmerlealp and past a small moor land lake. It is not far now to the summit, at a height of 1,250 metres and complete with the Lustenauer Hütte, a chalet-style restaurant. Most hikers reward themselves with a refreshing local Mohren beer or a sparkling apple juice. To keep hunger at bay you can expect

to find dishes such as juicy schnitzel with salad or baked Alpine rösti with bacon and gratinated mountain cheese. The ‘Hütte’ is open from Tuesday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; it is closed in November and April. level of difficulty moderate time 1:08 min distance 4,09 km altitude 150 m

Pfarrers Älpele The starting point for this approximately 15-20 minute walk is the church in Ebnit. After about quarter of an hour hikers are rewarded with a fantastic view of mountains covered in forest and mountain ledges and ridges. Right in the centre lies the Alpine chalet restaurant Pfarrers Älpele, at a height of 1,270 metres above sea level. It is open from May to October every day except Wednesdays, and in the off-season except Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kässpätzle are served up for groups, in the autumn there is a traditional

26

‘slaughter party’, a treat for meat-lovers. In addition to the standard menu there are also daily specials such as roast pork with cabbage and dumplings, goulash or ‘Beuschel’, a traditional offal dish. level of difficulty easy time 22 min distance 1,15 km altitude 130 m

Ilgenwald Alpe Ebnit is also the starting point for this approximately one-hour hike. Head off past the former Gasthaus Freschen in the direction of the Ach. On the way, before reaching the Ilgenwald Alpe, you will also pass Ebensand. The ‘Alpe’ small but picturesque and secluded chalet restaurant that sits way above the Dornbirn settlement of Ebnit at a height of 1,140 metres. Visitors to this cosy establishment are treated to hearty fare such as sausage and homemade cheese. Hikers can quench their thirst

with a glass of homemade ‘Most’ [cider]. The ‘Alpe’ is open in summer from June to September, open from 10am for as long as guests are there. level of difficulty easy time 52 min distance 2,35 km altitude 300 m

ON YOUR MARKS, DORNBIRN! TEXT Miriam Jaeneke

If you have a sudden gap in your diary and feel like spontaneously getting out and doing something, you are spoilt for choice in Dornbirn. The options presented in the following also don’t help narrow down this choice. However, there is a clear focus: movement. Amongst them there are the classics, for example swimming, but also more unusual sports, such as archery, which you can maybe sample for the first time. Our advice at this juncture: simply give it a go! 29

Cycling — Grab your bike, in the saddle, let’s go! For example, take the Schwefel heading out of town and then left following the sign to the animal sanctuary. If you’re feeling peckish you can stop for a snack at the Obstguat zum Steirer behind the animal sanctuary or at the Möcklebur further on in the direction of Ried. From here the tour can be extended as you wish. Is your bike a mountain bike? In that case why not try the climb up to Ebnit from the campsite ‘Camping Dornbirn’ – but be warned, this is very steep in places. There’s also another exhilarating ascent up Bergstraße, which leads up to the Bödele, and from there in the direction of Kehlegg, Heilenberg, Watzenegg, Bantling, Stuben, Fruh, Ammenegg, Bödele, Schwendealpe, Schauner, Bad Hof and Kehlegg back to Dornbirn.

Hiking — For those looking for a bit of physical exercise coupled with enjoyment of the great outdoors, a good hike is to be recommended. For families the immediate recommendation would be the classic route through Rappenloch Gorge. Simply start in Gütle, up the mountain and follow the course of the gorge for about an hour to Staufensee lake, or if you want to you can also continue further along to reach Alploch Gorge. At this point we must also mention the Karren. The best route up is from the valley station of the Karren cable car, from where you can climb to the summit in about an hour before stopping for some food at the Panorama restaurant. It’s also possible to travel up in the cable car and then to hike to Ebnit, via Schuttannen, the Schönermannalpe and Fluhereck, in about three hours. The start point can be reached by bus.

30

Mountain hiking — Sure-footed and experienced hikers – who of course always have the correct equipment with them – can also venture a little bit higher into the mountains. The Weißenfluh Alp can be reached in approximately two hours from the Bödele, via Lustenauer Hütte and Bregenzer Hütte. A secret tip, you can revitalise with some food at these two huts for the return leg. As an alternative, in around five hours you can hike from the Gasthaus Heumöser in Ebnit over the Lindenbachalpe and past the Schneewaldalpe to the Kugelalpe, up onto the Hohe Kugel to the Emser Hütte and back via the Alpe Schöner Mann and Pfarrers Älpele. Another route with a similar length is from the valley station of the Karren cable car up onto the Karren, then follow the Wurzelweg hiking route to the Staufenspitze. The whiteblue-white signed return route promises a true Alpine hiking experience. Swimming — For water-babies wishing to throw off their clothes (well, nearly all of them) and take a dip, the centrally-located stadtbad [city baths] is just perfect. Just a few minutes by foot from the city centre, the baths has a 25-metre-long, 16.66-metre-wide sports pool, which, depending on day of the week, time of the day and weather, you won’t have to share with too many others. The facility

is closed on Mondays, otherwise it is open all-year-round and is a great place to unwind for two or three hours. And once you have finished with the breaststroke, backstroke and front crawl, why not relax for a while in the sauna. Or why not try something completely different? The ‘Black Box’ is a fully-enclosed pipe-slide that integrates and unites water with light and sound effects. During summer you can also take the bathing pleasures outside. If the Waldbad Enz [forest bath] is not enough, you will find enough rocks and pools in the nearby Dornbirner Ach to alternate between sun and water. Treetop adventures in Ebnit — The high-wire adventure park is a whole world of fun for the young and youngat-heart, with challenges such as the pamper pole, giant swing and Jacob’s ladder. At a height of ten metres, this can be a nerve-tingling experience. Whether with friends of with work colleagues, this is an adventure that will see you leave your comfort zone and tackle obstacles that require both courage and skill. Along the way you may find the quietest of people finds their voice to become the most vocal of supporters and the brashest becomes unusually silent. However it works out, this outdoor training will prove a positive experience that can be taken forward to boost your confidence in everyday life.

Flying Fox in Ebnit — The most highflying – in the truest sense of the word – attraction in Ebnit is without doubt the Flying Fox adventure course. This outdoor attraction can be found in the forest behind the high-wire adventure park. Find yourself a group of at least six – simply ask the nicest people that you know – and manoeuvre yourselves between the six Flying Fox platforms by swinging through the air. The distances between the platforms range from 50 and to 150 metres. And the heights above the ground from 10 to 50 metres. Somewhat dizzying? No, extremely exciting! But the adventure doesn’t end there. Your team will also have to successfully conquer the terrain, including a zip wire challenge across the stream and a climb up the steep bank of Bruderbach. Archery in Ebnit — Do you, your family or friends feel like finding out what it feels like to be Robin Hood for a day? Then why not visit the archery course behind the high-wire adventure park in Ebnit. There are practice facilities for young and old with prior experience of using a bow and arrow. And there are also beginners’ groups

taught by experienced guides, who can go stalking in the woods on the hunt for foxes and rabbits. Of course, the animal targets are made out of synthetic materials. After expert tuition and a little practice, even those new to archery can have success. Thanks to the various shooting positions, a good number of target shots are guaranteed with a whole lot of fun. Jogging — Jogging is not only good for the body, it’s also for the soul. You’ll feel that straight away when you’re snaking along beside the Dornbirner Ach, for example. Start opposite Campus V, then just follow the river towards Rohrbach, cross the bridge to the other bank and come back. Along the way you will see water, forest and rock formations. You don’t have to jump straight in at ten kilometres, three is plenty to start with. Simply cross at one of the earlier bridges to shorten the distance. Or, for those who wish to add a little elevation and fantastic views, start at Kehlerstraße, along Bickweg and from there up the Rhomberg and back via the Eulental valley. Perhaps today the first route, tomorrow the next?

BANKING ADVICE BETWEEN CHANGE AND CONSISTENCY An interview with Richard Karlinger and Egon Gunz, branch directors at the Hypo Vorarlberg in Dornbirn.

Richard Karlinger, branch director

What does the Hypo Vorarlberg believe in? Karlinger: As the entrepreneurial bank in Vorarlberg, we offer both business and private clients competent and personal advice in a private atmosphere. Whether this concerns the purchase of a house or apartment, the investment of assets or investment and project financing. This is why our brand promise is to offer the best advice to anyone that has a project in the offing. Gunz: We take time to listen and promise that we will work together with our customers. This promise has been regularly confirmed by renowned testers. The financial publisher ‘Fuchsbriefe’ currently rates us in the category portfolio quality as the best-placed regional universal bank in the German-speaking countries and in the most recent ‘Elite Report’ we have been awarded the highest grade ‘summa cum laude’ in the private banking area for the seventh time in succession. Digitalisation is playing an ever-increasing role in the banking world. How is the Hypo Vorarlberg approaching this challenge? Karlinger: We see it as our challenge to give our customers the opportunity of taking care of as much as they can digitally, however to simultaneously offer them the possibility of speaking to a bank adviser whenever they want to. Our focus is to offer more and more flexible paths of access to the required advice. For example, our online banking system enables direct contact to an advisor. You could say that digitalisation offers new possibilities for

Egon Gunz, branch director private clients

us to focus on our strengths in the provision of advice, rather than suppressing these. 33

Gunz: We are working in parallel on making administrative processes more efficient. This means that our employees will have more time in the future to spend talking to our customers, viewing prospectuses and finding joint solutions. This is an absolutely essential process when looking at bespoke investment and financing models. How do you see banking advice in the future? Karlinger: Here at the Hypo Vorarlberg we are trying to proactively structure our banking advice of the future on the basis of new technologies, above all however also taking into account changes in customer behaviour. For example, with the new Hypo Office Banking we are the first Austrian bank to offer companies an international, multi-bank compatible online payment application. This offers companies the possibility of securely managing payment flows, also internationally, on the web across all accounts. Gunz: In this digital age the customer expects an intelligent range of paths of access to his bank that has been tailor-made to his requirements: from uncomplicated online product purchasing to mobile banking to personal advice. The merging of all banking services into a holistic product offer and a satisfactory customer experience via all channels are our focus. In other words, the customer is now even more the centre of our attention.

GET SOME FRESH AIR It is a well-known fact that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. That may well be the case, however a hike on the Bödele or a trip up Dornbirn’s local mountain Karren without the panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and Lake Constance would be like Kässpätzle [cheese pasta] without fried onions: somehow quite okay, however not quite right.

35

A look over the edge on Karren — even though Dornbirn’s very own local mountain is called the ‘Karren’ [old car], you can’t go up in one, but glide up in a cable car in less than five minutes up to a height of 976 metres. Opened in 2016 and already famous way beyond the regional borders, the ‘Karrenkante’ is a glass platform that stretches 12 metres out beyond the precipice, with a fabulous view down into the Rhine valley, across to Lake Constance and across the borders into Switzerland and Germany. Karren is the starting point for a multitude of family days out and sporting activities, a popular Sunday destination and a magnet for visitors. For the sporty there is a challenging climb from the city side or it can be climbed via the relaxing family walking trail. A particularly comfortable ascent however is provided by the cable car, running every fifteen minutes. There are various walking trails back down into the valley. Or you can also be transported back down in the cable car and simply enjoy the fantastic view again.

Thrilling hikes through Rappenloch Gorge and Alploch Gorge — Unique rock formations, narrow walkways, breathtaking valley crossings and roaring waterfalls cannot fail to impress visitors to Rappenloch Gorge. The entrance is in Gütle, an idyllic neighbourhood of Dornbirn at the end of a prettily winding road, flanked by forest and the Dornbirner Ach, a mere 5.5 km from Dornbirn railway station and reachable by the no. 47 bus. After about half an hour of hiking along perfectly safe paths and walkways you will reach Staufensee and an idyllic path that skirts around this lake. From Staufensee it is possible to hike onwards to the wildly romantic Alploch Gorge. Demanding but well-secured walkways lead through this gorge and past remarkable rock formations and finally through deciduous forest to Ebnitstraße. From here you can travel back to the city by bus from the Alploch bus stop, with buses every 1 and a half hours.

Picture postcard hiking on Bödele — The no. 38 bus leaves Dornbirn railway station every 30 minutes. This will take you along the windy road leading away from town, past the upmarket suburb of Watzenegg and through forest to the Bödele region. Travelling around the long curves, far-reaching views over the Rhine valley and as far as Lake Constance open up. Right beside the Bödele bus stop is the ‘Berghof Fetz’ with its inviting coffee terrace, comfortable interior and unobstructed views of the Bregenzerwald. From here it leads up to the ‘Meierei’ and an idyllic hiking trail between Hänsel and Gretel holiday homes, like you would see in an illustrated fairy tale book. Without any difference in attitude you can then hike from the Losenpass across the Fohramoos, a nature conservation area with natural moorland, rare plants and in winter a fabulous cross-country ski track.

WITH RESPONSIBILITY, COMMON SENSE AND INNOVATION TEXT Verena Konrad

Vorarlberg’s architects have a solid reputation. Many of them are known far beyond Austrian borders. A new generation of architects are now treading in their footsteps. We visit three new-generation architects’ offices in Dornbirn.

38

NONA Architektinnen — Founded in 2017, Nora Heinzle and Anja Innauer work from their offices in Dornbirn on architecture projects of a slightly different nature, involving the conversion and repurposing of existing buildings. Projects of this nature require a particular sensitivity and understanding of the logic of the existing building, as well as a good appreciation of the requirements of the new users of the building. “For us no job is too small or too unimportant. The retention of our cultural architectural heritage is important to us. Of course we are also happy to design totally new buildings. However when we do so it is important to us that we consider the appropriate forms of incorporation and embodiment in the village and urban structures.” Both earned their diplomas at the Technical University in Vienna. Periods studying and working abroad and civil engineering exams, as well as the gathering of experience in the offices of other architecture firms, were all important steps along the way to the founding of their own offices. “In our daily lives working on design competition proposals plays a huge role. Design competitions are important firstly in order to be awarded new contracts and secondly in order to grapple both intellectually and from a design perspective with new problems and find solutions for the best use of a space.” nona-architektinnen.at

6850 — ARCHITECTURE

Simon Metzler and Lukas Schelling — Working as part of a cooperative has a long history in the field of architecture. Working cooperatives are useful in many ways: working together it is possible to tackle larger or more complex projects and to increase areas of competence and pool experience, references and contacts. Simon Metzler and Lukas Schelling have their joint office infrastructure in Dornbirn’s Rosenstraße. Not visible from the outside, they work on design competitions and commissioned architecture projects in the rooms of a family home. Lukas Schelling also teaches as a technical college lecturer. “We are happy with this variety.” The two architects first met each other working in the offices of Leopold Kaufmann. “This connection is still important to us today.” Since 2016 Simon Metzler is also a design consultant in Hittisau. “We want to assume responsibility for the architectural environment in which we live. Together we can cover a vast field. In order to keep business running, we also work for colleagues, building contractors and communes in which we work on studies and develop the foundations for projects”. Julia Kick — After many years of working in the offices of Hugo Dworzak, Helmut Kuess and ‘bad architects group’, Julia Kick launched her solo career two years ago. The first stage for this was the passing of her civil engineering exams. Since the middle of this year she has been working from her new location close to Dornbirn station. With the renovation of the ‘Oeconomiegebäude Josef Weiß’ building she has not only shown what she can do, but also created a new multi-use location. Simultaneously renovating a culturally important building for the city and retaining much of the old building fabric, she has managed to create a residential apartment, together with a work space for herself, and set a shining example: contemporary urban living is also possible in an old building, even in an old barn. As recognition of her commitment, she was awarded the Vorarlberger Holzbaupreis [wooden building prize] in her very first year of self-employment. The architect describes on her website what she does: initial deliberations and consultancy on precepts, concepts, draft planning, execution planning and detail planning, tendering and cost control, construction management, interior design. She co-developed the project ‘Ein guter Rat’ [a piece of good advice] for the commune of Lustenau, which is designed to provide building owners with assistance at the beginning of building conversion and repurposing projects. juliakick.com

CITY LANDSCAPES TEXT Verena Konrad

The quality of life in any town is largely down to its buildings and what they offer. However, with the construction of each new building new intervening spaces and spatial restrictions are also created – new outlooks and insights, new paths, new squares, quite simply a new arrangement of space in the sense of ownership and possession.

40

Right at the top of the wish list for many Austrians is ‘living in green space’ – with regard to both private and public surroundings and this is therefore a critical requirement. However the word ‘green’ must cover many things and there are also many ideas about how this wish can be fulfilled architecturally. “In Vorarlberg there is a not insignificant, however decreasing, section of the public that live in detached or semi-detached family houses with gardens. No one else has their own private green space and these people are reliant on public or shared spaces if they want to get out in the fresh air. However both of these groups of people use these free spaces and green spaces both inside and outside of the urban areas for sport, for relaxation, as a meeting point, to go for a stroll, to play. The need for this facility is not only increasing because many people can no longer afford or no longer want to have their own garden, but also because the building density continues to increase and as a result apartments and living spaces themselves are also getting smaller. As a consequence the free spaces must adopt increasingly compensatory functions for the community”, writes Lilli Lička. In addition to her professional practice, the landscape architect with roots in Vorarlberg has also taught for many years at the University for Soil Culture in Vienna. Since 2003 she has been head of the Institute for

41

Landscape Architecture, which is part of the University. “The provision of free spaces and landscapes, their quality and safeguarding is crucial for quality of life. Despite the fact that in this region characterised by its natural beauty there is seemingly an abundance of ‘green’ available, the number of easily-reachable, publicly-accessible and useable free spaces is restricted. Virtually all of the cultivated landscape, which also gives the impression of green below the mountain and Alpine regions, is used for agricultural purposes. Agricultural areas are only accessible if there are footpaths and bridleways across them. This means that public spaces must actively be provided.” Public park areas must be created, but this is connected with the purchase or otherwise making available of land. So the municipal authority of Dornbirn purchased the former site of the company Rüsch for the creation of the new Stadtgarten. Other towns and cities in Vorarlberg have also resorted to using historically significant and private, however not feudal, gardens for the provision of parks and green spaces – which is a key difference to the local regulations of other towns, cities and regions. Of particular importance for such projects is the inheritance passed down by earlier industry, because many of today’s public facilities in Vorarlberg have their origins in former factory premises or the gardens of the former villas of the industrialists themselves. This means that Dornbirn is today not only a ‘garden city’, it also has its Stadtgarten. This is important when viewed in the context of the urbanisation and spatial transformation of what was for-

top extension Marktplatz bottom Kindergarden Marktstraße

merly an agricultural community into a city. However, when talking about public spaces it is not only parks and open areas that play a role, rather also the city’s streets. Since the 1980s many of the inner-city streets in Vorarlberg have been pedestrianised and reinvented as urban relaxation areas, for example Marktplatz in Dornbirn. An extension to this has now been put in place with the ‘Stadtnaht’, newly designed by architects LAAC, which connects Marktplatz with Schulgasse and Mozartstraße. New paths, a public square and a green area provide quality of stay, demonstrate an open picture of society and are a clear acknowledgement of urbanity and diversity.

MY FAVOURITES TEXT Annette Raschner

Love is something that is deeply subjective, it’s true. It thrives in places where we feel comfortable, where we meet people that we like and where we find an atmosphere that warms us and satisfies our requirements. For certain places that we cherish as ‘ loved ones’ we reserve a particular claim to exclusivity, others we are happy to share. Places with a particular charisma and charm – you can find these everywhere – but you also have to have the time to find them. We have asked creative artists either originating from or active in Dornbirn to tell us about a few of their “ favourites” in the trade exhibition town of Dornbirn.

CARO STARK Caro’s favourites —  1 TiK, Theater im Kopfbau, Jahngasse 10: “I like the anarchistic atmosphere that reigns at the TiK. I also build my stage sets there for UNPOP. A place with the character of a laboratory and a charm that can’t be found anywhere else, because everywhere else has been renovated to death. We have realised several works for the Theater Wagabunt, which was always really exciting for us.” 2 Kulturhaus, Rathausplatz 1: “The backstage area has some fabulous theatrical spaces and has fantastic technical equipment. We are really spoilt and in good hands here. There are some great people that work at the Kul-

turhaus, who never say no even to the craziest of ideas, which is something that you don’t find very often!“ 3 Spielboden, Färbergasse 15: “Great crew – extremely varied programme – fabulous location in the old Dornbirn industrial area.” 4 Café Steinhauser, Marktplatz 9: “An institution in Dornbirn. Located right in the heart of Marktplatz, I love to sit here and watch the world revolve around me!” 5 Rappenlochschlucht, Gütlestraße: “A trip through this gorge is simply mind-blowing – an immense and powerful natural spectacle that has fascinated me since I was a child – I always like to bring guests here.”

In Vienna the parks are a long way away, here I have a garden, a conservatory and the Dornbirner Ach flowing directly past the front door, pure luxury. To have family around you provides a particular intimacy. It is simply nice just to be a daughter for a few days.” 2 ediths Dornbirn, Lustenauerstr. 10: “I inherited the interior decorating gene from my mother. I can find everything I want and need here: cushion covers, blankets, plants etc. I always come here when I’m in Vorarlberg

and get as many things that I can cram into my suitcase – the shops in Vorarlberg are much nicer than in Vienna!” 3 Cafesito, Eisengasse 3: “They have such delicious bagels. This place is always so nice and cosy, even when it’s full. I meet childhood friends here, who are in the meantime scattered across the world!” 4 Wine tavern ‘Obstguat zum Steirer’, Forachstr. 117: “Various random things hang in the trees here, like coffee cups, cooking spoons and tankards – rustic and nice. We spent a lot of time hanging out there as children and were happy that we could do whatever we wanted, miles away from all others – later we also had some great parties in Ebnit.” 2 Kunstraum Dornbirn, Jahngasse 9: “Beautiful building with great exhibitions – a park right in the middle of the city is also something special. The overall concept is a success, they have not tried to ‘prettify’ anything, simply left it original – totally different to the usual ‘white cubes’ that you otherwise see everywhere.” 3 Gasthaus Gemsle, Marktstraße 62: “I meet up with friends here in the back room. I have a strong affinity

with pubs like this because my grandfather used to own a tavern in Kennelbach/Langen. Excellent food, friendly service – we held our Christmas party here.” 4 car park at Rhombergareal: “I like to ride my bike to this place. Classic functional architecture with fantastic panoramic views from the open upper roof terrace – I need that once in a while after spending days sitting in the office. Last summer we hosted our first rooftop openair cinema right here. The ride back is also a lot of fun, the downhill run makes for a real adrenaline rush!” 5 Café Bar Klappe 2, Marktstraße 2: “I meet here sometimes with artists after a performance in the seating area behind the bar. Intimate, pleasant local – the owner is a musician. A small, elegant bar with an uncomplicated character, where everyone knows everyone.”

BERNHARD BELEJ Bernhards favourites —   1 Ammenegger Stuba, Ammenegg 1: “The food here is excellent. Since I became a father I start work a little later and I also finish a little later and in between I sometimes take an hour for myself in the ‘Stuba’, just to clear my head. I also like to meet people here to discuss various projects.” 2 Conrad Sohm, Boden 1: “In the past I’ve been involved with extraordinary artistic projects here, for example the ‘Kompal’ series. This was always my home base. As a young man I was here every weekend to soak up the special atmosphere. I did the visuals for the 20-year anniversary and now there is a collaboration with TonZoo for the talent competition. Conrad Sohm is simply Conrad Sohm!“ 3 Cafesito, Eisengasse 3: “Nice, uncomplicated atmos-

phere with a big city flair. You can meet all sorts here, also children because there’s plenty of room for prams.” 3 Café-Bar-Club Frei, Marktstraße 2: “Super crew – uncomplicated and efficient – there are always great live concerts here, for example the Vorarlberg band ‘KIN’!” 4 Gasthof Engel, Bergstraße 31: “I often come here to the ‘Engel’ after finishing a studio production, sometimes after midnight, and I always get something to eat from ‘rote Zora’. Her niece runs this tavern in her spirit. There’s a real mixture of clientele – from the Oberdorf scene to the motorcycle rockers. Lots of musicians, loads of concerts. I have also spun some tunes here as DJ. ‘Engel’ is the sort of place that you just walk into for a beer and end up spending a long, convivial night.”

DISCOVER THE MOHREN BREWERY EXPERIENCE The opening of the new Mohren Brewery Experience Museum has added further flavour to the visitor experience at the traditional Dornbirn brewery by really bringing the story of this renowned local beer to life.

The Mohren Biererlebniswelt gives people the chance to learn all about the history and products of this Vorarlberg institution, with individual elements brought together to provide a truly holistic beer experience. Make your own beer in the Creative Brewery, find inspiration from the range of ales in the shop (Mohren Lädele), celebrate special occasions in the historical cellar (Braukeller) or even enjoy a pleasant meeting in one of the Mohren seminar rooms. The brewery experience is completed by a walk around the museum, which enables visitors to immerse themselves in the world of beer. Experience a rich beer heritage in the new museum — The new museum provides an impressive overall experience by blending the long history of the brewery, the various different elements of the traditional company and interesting information about beer from all around the world. Opened in October 2016 and covering four floors and 700 square metres, the interactive and multimedia exhibition offer a fascinating insight into beer produc-

tion through the ages – including everything from raw materials to the tasty end product. The centrepiece of the Mohren Brewery Experience Museum is the historic brewing installation that dates back to the 19th century. Managing Director Heinz Huber acquired this equipment in 1989 and has had it painstakingly restored for the exhibition. A collector’s passion — Thanks largely to the passion of Heinz Huber, the oldest brewery in Vorarlberg boasts a collection of more than 10,000 objects, ranging from beer bottles to antique brewing devices. A number of the items are now on display in the museum. Cafesito — Cafesito brings a little taste of New York right here to Dornbirn, treating you to delicious bagels. Imagine starting the day off with a freshly toasted bagel smothered in cream cheese. You can even try a different type of bagel every day of the week; plain, sesame, laugen, rye, onion, wholemeal or cinnamon and raisin. Then what to fill it with? Will it be sweet or savoury, classic or something a bit different? Let them also tempt you with their bagel of the week, for example pumpkin spread and bacon or sweet potato and feta and you have to try their homemade hummus. Pair your bagel with a damn good coffee and “have a nice day”.

Marenda Brotkultur — The sweet smell of freshly baked bread is in no short supply in Dornbirn, but let your senses guide you to Marenda and your eyes and stomach will also be rewarded. With rows upon rows of delectable breads, cakes and other baked goods you really are spoilt for choice. Here you can not only marvel at their creations, but you might be lucky enough to actually see the bakers at work. For breakfast, sampling their array of breads is a must: potato, olive, spelt or my favourite, walnut. Add some extras such as creamy scrambled eggs, smoked salmon or homemade marmalades and don’t forget to pick something up on your way out for later.

Der Bäcker Ruetz — They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and the Ruetz family agree, inviting you to enjoy it at their bakery all day. Treat yourself to beautiful baked goods such as nougat vanilla kipferl [croissant] or order from their breakfast menu. You get to fill up your very own breakfast basket with their vast choice of oven-fresh items and array of spreads. Then sit down, relax and enjoy eating your way to the bottom until you have only the crumbs left. It may well be part of a chain of bakeries but that does not detract from the quality and this bakery will quickly become a family favourite.

Kaffeebohne — As the name suggests, Kaffeebohne [coffee bean] understands the importance of starting off the day with a good cup of coffee. Hidden down a cobbled backstreet just north of the market place, this gem of a coffee shop has the feeling of stepping into a friend’s house. Their large communal table greets you as you walk in the door, along with the alluring aroma of roasting coffee. They offer a superb range of beans from around the world, including some rarities. Make sure you try before you buy and enjoy a beautifully roasted coffee accompanied by some freshly baked bread from Stadelmann bakery lathered with their homemade spreads. It’s most definitely the simple things in life that can give us so much pleasure. 4 Marktstraße 41 T +43 5572 394858 kaffeebohne.co.at

Buongustaio — Meaning ‘gourmet’, this bustling café/deli treats you to fine Italian specialities. Browse their floor to ceiling shelves packed full of irresistible treats to whip up an Italian feast at home. All of their products are carefully sourced from the best Italian suppliers. At the weekend this café offers the perfect setting to enjoy a long and lazy brunch, but be sure to visit with a good appetite as their big breakfast will set you up for the entire day. They will start you off with a steaming cup of Italian coffee served with croissants and a variety of marmalades, followed by an Antipasti plate, oh and to finish, don’t forget the Prosecco.

Café 21/ Kaffeewerk Handle — At Café 21, no matter what time of day it is, you will never go hungry. Satisfy your morning hunger with a big American breakfast of fluffy pancakes, or perhaps Paris is more your style with buttery croissants, or let their vital breakfast of muesli, wholewheat bread and fresh fruit start your day off. Then head on over to their very own roasters, Kaffeewerk Handel (on Wed and Sat) for quite possibly one of the best cups of coffee in Vorarlberg. When somewhere makes the statement, coffee is like fine wine, you know they have the right idea. They only roast their coffee briefly in order to preserve the original coffee bean flavour, and the result is heavenly.

San Marco — Close your eyes and imagine sitting in the heart of a market place watching the world go by, with the sun beaming down on your face and the smell of homemade pasta stirring your senses. No, you are not in Rome, but you’ll feel like you’ve taken a mini trip to Italy over your lunch break when you visit San Marco. Their lunch menu boasts a different pasta dish every day such as homemade spaghetti with spicy salami finished with a tomato sauce, or tortellini with broccoli served in a gorgonzola cream sauce, or if the mood takes you try one of their traditional pizzas. The only problem is that you won’t want to go back to work.

Verwalter — This award-winning gourmet restaurant housed within the Zum Verwalter boutique hotel is without a doubt out to impress. Their three-course lunch menu is perfectly designed to wow your taste buds in just one hour. Elfenküche — Tucked away on the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Klostergasse this cosy café will warm your hearts and your stomachs. They aim to bring you traditional dishes but with originality and extravagance. With two homemade specials on offer daily, you will be itching to find out what delights await you. No-one is a stranger here, so grab a spot at the communal tables and tuck in. This will soon become a regular lunch spot and their takeaway jars will quickly stock up your fridge.

Rotes Haus — Built in 1639 this historical building is an icon of Dornbirn. Tourists and locals alike flock here enticed by the architecture as well as the food. Traditional is the order of the day but with the chef incorporating modern flavour combinations and techniques. Lunch specials have included pumpkin foam soup followed by crispy roast pork and spätzle, or perhaps sample pea and asparagus parfait, or their take on a classic, smoked salmon and spinach lasagne. In the warmer months, if you still have a little room left, finish off your meal perfectly with a homemade ice cream on your way out at their very own ice dealer.

Ganbei — Ganbei allows you to take a trip through the amazingly diverse and delicious world of Asian cuisine without getting out of your seat. Gabriel’s Cucina — The hospitality of this restaurant is second to none and will draw you in time and time again. Gabriel Venturiello’s passion and vibrancy is instantly contagious and his food is equally enticing. The seasonally changing menu features quality select ingredients, many of which are brought directly from his home region in Italy. Feast upon mussels in white wine sauce, ravioli filled with tagleggio and figs, or beef fillet in a mushroom cream sauce with pumpkin polenta. Throughout the year keep an eye out for their themed evenings, including Spanish night where they whip up the biggest pan of mouthwatering paella you have ever seen.

Stuonobach — Located in Steinebach this restaurant is housed in an old factory site and through the renovations they have created a whole series of spaces, each with their own unique character and mood. Their menu is also full of character with ample seasonal offerings and culinary delights, showcasing a variety of dishes with regional and international influences, making it near impossible not to indulge in a full three-course meal. Be enticed by mussels with walnut butter and pumpkin ravioli, or zander fillet with a hazelnut crust and white wine foam. Make sure you leave room however, as it would be a crime if you did not sample their chocolate mousse and mango sorbet.

Gemsle — Step back in time as you cross the threshold and get cosy in one of Gemsle’s traditional dining rooms, but do not get too settled; be ready for your taste buds to be transported back to the future with a menu inspired by their motto, traditional-original. However, the classics are still prepared here with pride and love, offering plenty to choose from. So let them surprise and seduce you with both their food and charm and you will leave wanting to go back for more.

AN EVENING AT CASINO BREGENZ – THE EXPERIENCE

62

“No more bets, please.“ As if by command, silence falls over the table. Dozens of pairs of eyes follow the small, white ball spinning around the roulette wheel. Lucky charms are kissed, fingers are crossed.

The ball narrows its course, lower and lower on the wheel. Suddenly it is hopping from field to field. From number to number. All eyes are fixated on the ball, mesmerised. The tension can be cut with a knife. No one dares to breathe. And then suddenly the ball stops, it has found its destiny … A few hours beforehand — One final check in the mirror, then we can get going. The excitement is already rising as the friendly young woman finally opens the doors at the start of the evening: “Welcome! Come in! We are pleased to see you. We wish you the best of luck and we hope you enjoy your evening at the Casino Bregenz”. Upon entering, the stress of the day is immediately lifted. This is a

place where thrilling entertainment and culinary delights unite. As soon as you enter the sophisticated atmosphere surrounds you and the unique casino atmosphere takes its hold. In world of indulgence — Waiters guide their guests to their tables in the elegant and stylish restaurant or on the gallery, which has the best view of the animated activities of the roulette tables. The staff at the FALSTAFF Restaurant welcome their guests with a refreshing aperitif and greetings from the kitchen. Head chef Gernot Bischofberger indulges his guests with a unique culinary journey through a whole world of enticing delicacies. And if you want to make your evening at the Casino Bregenz totally

unforgettable with an extra-special treat, reserve the Chef’s Table, right in the heart of the FALSTAFF kitchen. Here guests will have a close-up view of how each course is prepared and their meals are served up in their own private lounge. Accompanied by exquisite wines and anecdotes from the life of their toque-awarded chef, who has already cooked for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates. An experience to remember — After an excellent dinner, a charming croupier awaits his guests in the gaming area. A roulette table has been reserved. And this is no usual roulette table – this is used only and exclusively for explaining the game, in order to introduce visitors to the rules and secrets of roulette. After this introduction, you can dare to approach the live gaming tables. “Place your bets, please.” Guests place their chips on their chosen square of the board. Now the little white ball makes its first appearance. The slower it becomes, the more conversations at the table die down – everyone is entranced by the magic spell cast by the ball. The air is filled with electrifying excitement as the ball finally comes to a halt. “26, black.” Only now do you realise that for the entire time you have been holding your breath.

A short break — Why not take a break from the tables and enjoy a delicious cocktail in the sumptuous Casino Lounge, while soulful jazz musicians entertain their audience with well-known classics to hum along to. From the Lounge you can observe the colourful goings-on at the gaming machines in the neighbouring room. And if you look closely you will see the shimmering lights reflected on Lake Constance through the windows. With the last drops from your cocktail glass, the itchiness returns to the fingers. Time to mix with the other guests and have another wander through the casino. You walk past the more than 330 gaming machines to the Arik Brauer Saal, where all the gamblers have their poker faces on. You continue to the lively goings-on at the black jack and roulette tables. Now you are back in the game. An unforgettable evening Casino Bregenz– the experience. THE REALM OF BEAUTY TEXT Barbara Schmiedehausen

Lifestyle and sensuality with responsibility — Modern design and good old-fashioned craftsmanship? Urban lifestyle and familiar regional ties? Those wishing to find this all under one roof go to Mary Rose in Dornbirn, where beauty and joy are brought to the world. Crockery and household goods have been sold in Schillerstraße,

64

on the edge of Dornbirn’s pedestrianised zone, for almost 100 years. For the last 28 of those, Mary Rose has been the byword for good design, sustainable production and beautiful things for the home. And it is not only the people of Dornbirn who appreciate the pleasant atmosphere and sensual ambience of this lovely shop located in a traditional building. Guests from around the world allow themselves to be enchanted by the lovingly selected items for the house, bathroom and kitchen. And if they happen to fall in love with a slightly larger item, it can be wrapped, packed and shipped directly to their house door. Company founder Stefan Grabher lays great importance on being close to his customers and their needs. And the experience he gains from this is ploughed into the design of his beautiful collections and the choice of his hand-picked manufacturers. Connections are everything and Stefan Grabher also maintains long-term relationships with suppliers and producers, many of whom he can now count amongst his friends. Much-travelled around the entire globe, he tirelessly seeks out beautiful and useful things that bring joy and have quality, often together with his wife and two daughters. When doing this it is not only important to him that his customers receive good quality at a fair price, he also examines the entire upstream manufacturing process – Mary Rose is the first and only home textiles producer in the whole world that is a member of the Fair Ware Foundation. Around 80 % of the textiles products on offer are already produced according to Fair Ware criteria. One third of the textiles products in the shop are Bio/kbA [certified organic farming] or GOTS certified. Beautiful, local, sustainable — Sustainability is not only an important part of the Mary Rose philosophy when it comes to foreign goods: Mary Rose also supports the project Lebenshilfe Vorarlberg, helping people on its very own doorstep, so to speak. In its Dornbirn-based LebensArt workshops disabled and handicapped people manufacture products such as cushions filled with spelt or Swiss pine chips and are therefore very much part of the ‘Mary Rose family’. Stefan Grabher also has

6850 — SHOPPING

the very highest ethical standards in the area of bedding: no plucking of live birds, down from Europe and stitching among other places in Vorarlberg and Burgenland. Soon you will be able to experience a ‘live sewing workshop’ in Schillerstraße; then you can see how your very own bedclothes are created. One further example of quality and sustainability is the table linen, which is spun, woven and sewn in Portugal and decorated with artistic hemstitching. Upon request, monograms can be embroidered while you wait in the shop. Not only on the table linen, also on towels and bathroom textiles to provide a truly individual accent. A key theme is enticement of the senses: feel, smell, the sensual experience of beautiful things is particularly important at Mary Rose. This is the distinction from mass-produced goods and anonymous furniture shops. Another lovingly thought-out small detail: at Mary Rose you will still find cotton handkerchiefs – and these are once again in high demand. Only the best in the kitchen — A real cosy home requires a perfectly equipped kitchen and a well-laid table. “Mary Rose has a selected range of mostly European provenance, in a wide assortment”, states Stefan Grabher. There are glasses from Riedel in all shapes and sizes, the range of LeCreuset cast iron cooking pots is impressive and it is rare to find such a wide selection of colourful kitchen equipment by Rosti Mepal. “We only stock selected partners in our cookware department and we have long-term commitments with these. If you bought a glass from us two years ago, you will be able to still buy an identical one in our shop today”, assures Stefan Grabher. At Mary Rose there is a particular importance placed on good advice. Two of the employees in the shop are qualified cooks and can offer advice if required on precisely which cooking utensil is best suited for the preparation of which dish. The shop’s customers appreciate this in ever-increasing number. The beguiling shop in Dornbirn is, however, only a small, but very important part of the Mary Rose family. It is, so to speak, the shop window: under the brand names ‘Mary Rose’ and ‘mary‘s’, home textiles can be purchased at 280 points of sale all over Europe. Sustainable home textiles are manufactured for numerous European contractual partners. Dornbirn know-how is appreciated by customers around the world. MADE IN DORNBIRN TEXT Barbara Schmiedehausen

67

Because we can and because we are good at it. — Just imagine: the city is like an ant colony, everything has its place, everything has its function. With the exception of one queen with the specific task of egg laying, there are all manner of tasks, positions and spheres of activity to share out. Everything interacts, everyone knows what he or she has to do. And within this seething mass, which only makes sense when viewed as a whole, there are the absolute specialists. The people that have made their handiwork into art, who are so finely trained, so concentrated on what they do, that they represent a niche species. And they are not only there to create beauty in itself, they also make edible items, but items that are so

exquisite, so delicious that all senses merge into one, so infatuating. Or items that are practical, but so precise and intricately-crafted that they exceed mere practicality to become an object of beauty, a feast for the eyes. How does one come on the idea of forging a hand axe? For what reason does one manufacture ropes, cords and laces, exquisite handbags and shoes? Why do they roast the finest coffee from all corners of the globe here in Dornbirn? Why is one type of beer not enough and why are there one thousand different vases? Because we can, because we want to and because we are good at it. And always striving to get better.

DAS STADTBAD An oasis in the centre of Dornbirn

72

Dornbirn is anything but a desert, yet right in the centre is the place in question with a relatively large amount of water and exceptional features: the municipal swimming pool. Behind the huge glass façade of the imposing cube-shaped building, it is not just shimmering blue pools which entice you … The municipal swimming pool is one of the most modern and attractive pools in the region. Swimming, sauna, massage and a visit to the public restaurant – the climate is always heavenly. Bathers of all ages have fun splashing about in the sports and multi purpose pool equipped with diving platform. The non-swimmer and parent-child area with own baby pool and the popular fountain are ideal for families. The biggest crowd puller is the so-called “Black Box”: inside is the spectacular 46-metre tube slide with water, light and sound effects.

is also an Oasis. With various temperatures to choose from, the guests are properly heated. They can follow their own heat rhythm with hourglasses, and when the sand has trickled through, it’s time to take a cold (or very cold) shower. The hard-boiled prefer the cool diving pool. During the winter season a courtyard is waiting for you to cool off. After that one can relax in the cosy resting room before the next round. The weekends and Holidays can considerably accelerate ones pulse – the oasis in the centre of Dornbirn becomes a holiday island. das stadtbad Schillerstraße 18, 6850 Dornbirn +43 5572 22687, stadtbad.at, stadtbad@dornbirn.at Opening hours*

Artistic recreational island — Where there is an Oasis, there is also a mirage not too far away. The media artist, Ruth Schnell, created the magic pulsating lightbar “LOUD and QUIET” on the inner façade. Its rhythm reflects the acoustic level in the swimming pool, forming imaginary word creations. The sauna landscape in itself

In my blog, I report on my travels, experiences, eateries and of course the various regional specialities in the places that I visit. My various travels all over the northern and southern hemispheres have allowed me to immerse myself in various cultures. And thus, my tour of Dornbirn evoked many memories and comparisons to hotspots and cool locations around the world. My blog has in the meantime become my job, which means on the one hand

that I can draw inspiration from around the world and on the other that I am constantly drifting as a so-called digital nomad working in cafés and pubs. Although the centre of my life has in the meantime become Vienna, I really enjoy coming back to my home town of Dornbirn, which I manage to do several times each year, and enjoying the region’s tradition, the feeling of community and of course the regional food.

Amann Kaffee — What better place for a meeting than in the picturesque ‘Rotes Haus’ in Dornbirn’s Marktplatz! To put into context, what Big Ben is to London, the ‘Rotes Haus’ is to Dornbirn – at the same time both a landmark and right in the heart of things. Amann occupies the ground floor of the building, with open-air seating. A coffee-lover’s paradise, it has a range of 22 different speciality coffees and even offers educational tasting and information evenings on the theme of coffee culture. The choice beans are roasted in the Amann roasting house in Schwarzenberg. This coffee lover’s dream is an ideal place for a meeting over a fine breakfast. From a flat white from Australia to a cold brew, I have sampled many coffees all around the world but nothing animates me more into organising a catch-up with business partners than the unique Arabica-quality at Amann in Dornbirn.

Buongustaio — Literally translated this means ‘gourmet’ or, to use more modern parlance, ‘foodie’. Right up my street then! I have recently had yearnings for Italy. I was thinking back to my fabulous recent holiday in Tuscany and the delicious food, the unbelievably good olive oil and the special relationship that the Italians have with their food and their wine. The various speciality dishes and their origins are really celebrated using only the best quality ingredients. To satisfy my yearnings I headed naturally to Buongustaio to spoil myself with delicious Italian food. I took part in an olive oil tasting session and chose my favourite, a spicy one. In Buongustaio the Italian eating and drinking culture is brought to life. What better way of doing business than with a little ‘dolce vita’, two espressos or a good glass of Tuscan wine with an anti-pasti platter, some Robiola goats’ cheese and the finest prosciutto.

21 Café & Mehr — Clearly designed in millennium style, the 21 entices guests in for stimulating conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. With bar seating and comfortable corners in which to relax, as well as the pavement café terrace outside, it reminds me of the typical 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. all-day-long eateries found from Barcelona to Stockholm. This impression is confirmed by the menu containing everything from sushi to tapas, speciality coffees to cocktails, gins to a refined wine menu. This is an ideal place to meet to enjoy a great coffee, which is prepared with the help of the café’s own in-house coffee roaster. I’m particularly fond of the fresh pancakes. For the more health-conscious businessperson, the menu also has items such as wholesome muesli with wholemeal bread and fresh fruit. The excellent wine menu also provides the ideal conversation kick-starter for meetings in the evening.

Steinhauser — A long-established classic which has become part of the fabric of Dornbirn. There is something for everyone here, from the youngster to the senior, from the hipster to the coffeeshop nerd. The ‘Steini’, as it is affectionately nicknamed by the people of Dornbirn, is a great meeting place. In spring, summer or early autumn you can sit quite comfortably outside, in a very similar way to the famous Paris pavement cafés, watching the people go by. My tip: the refreshing ‘Rosi’ drink with homemade strawberry purée, mint, lime and vodka, or perhaps the homemade ginger beer. Inside there is plenty of space for good conversation, quieter tables for eating and drinking, comfortable corner booths and two counters at the bar. Classic breakfasts, coffee, tea, fruit juices and the small but exquisite, ever-changing lunch and evening menus offer something for any occasion. Fact: the Steinhauser is open 365 (364) days every year and also welcomes guests on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Bierlokal — In summer in particular the Bierlokal is the after-work hangout. Letting the evening pass by lounging comfortably under a huge parasol as if in one of Munich’s famous beer gardens. If it gets too chilly, the bar, high tables and dining room invite you inside for a cosy chat. This is a place for beer lovers and also for wine connoisseurs – there are speciality beers on draft and a good selection of wines, with viewings and tastings in the cellars. And there is also a fine selection of good, traditional, home-cooked food to have with your after-work beer or glass of wine. Regional specialties and seasonal dishes can always be found on the menu. I like coming here for the traditional regional cooking: in Vienna, it’s not so easy to find a Vorarlberg sausage and Bregenzerwald mountain cheese salad. 1 Marktstraße 12

Frei — When it comes to drinks, there’s not much that’s not available at Frei. The drinks menu is massive. In addition to all the usual suspects, this hip place offers a huge selection of drinks to get that after-work heart pumping. And if you’re looking for a little more, for example on a Friday night, just go down to the cellar and start your weekend with some funky beats. When I visit the Frei Bar on a Friday evening all hell is breaking loose. In the background is a classic song from my youth complete with visuals on the ceiling that are not quite in sync. Turning round to look and listen, it seems that the most popular drinks with the guests are ‘Rosenkuss’, ‘Great Gatsby’ or the classic ‘Moscow Mule’, which is also what I decided to order. Just like that time in Copenhagen, where I drank MM for the first time. The bar – a cosy café during the day – transforms itself into a lively urban club in the evenings that is always packed – body contact guaranteed.

7er Bar — The neon ‘donut’ in Eisengasse, will reveal the location of the 7er Bar. Something that I have only just found out myself – the 7er Bar has been in existence for as long as I have, since 1986. And although much has certainly changed since then, the music is still far from the mainstream. When I order a lemon soda, I receive a puzzled look back and am corrected “Grusigs!”[repulsive]. At the 7er a lemon soda with vodka is known as ‘Körigs’[superb]. One of the best-loved drinks in summer is the passion fruit habanero shots. Otherwise at the 7er there is a large selection of beer on draft, light and dark, and even the Irish Guinness on tap. And of course there are also plenty of live DJs. Even if it doesn’t host the same big acts as the L’Amour in Brooklyn – Metallica, Kiss and Guns N’Roses have all played there – it does remind me a little bit of that crazy NY bar. I particularly like the bar lights, which are made out of glass fibre cable – brand ‘homemade’.

Mr. French — If you look at the Mr. French website you’ll find the description ‘communications local’. If that’s the case, it sounds like just the right place for an after-work drink! In particular because of all the different types of craft beer, both on draft and bottled. In the year 2016, Mr. French managed to gain an entry in Conrad Seidl’s Bier Guide as the top beer bar in Vorarlberg. The wide range of gins and whiskies is particularly popular. Despite the name, Mr. French always gives me a feeling as if I am in Dublin. There hot food is served throughout the day, so you can enjoy some top-quality traditional food together with your after-work drink and food with a beery twist, for example beer foam soup with dark rye bread croutons and small strips of bacon, prawns in beer batter or beer goulash. Mr. French is open all week – this pleases me because I have already become accustomed to the big city lifestyle in Vienna. And because, as a blogger, I usually also indulge in an after-work drink on Saturday or Sunday.

Café Erika — My personal highlight in Café Erika? The retro jukebox! Here they play songs from the 70s every day. My mother tells stories about this café – it has been run as a family business by Helmut and Erika for more than 40 years. You can spend a happy evening here with the Rolling Stones and a fine Bregenzerwald gin. Most of the guests are regulars, who first choose their rock or pop on the jukebox before sitting to talk to each other loudly and conversantly at bar and tables. The relaxed approach of those times can still be felt here today. Small snacks,

which vary according to season, are put out to nibble at with your after-work beer. A favourite is toast with Bregenzerwald ham and cheese. Depending on time of year, Café Erika also hosts events, such as DJs or theme evenings. Friday is definitely the busiest night here. It reminds me a little of the cool rock cafés in Edinburgh. 5 Klostergasse 3 T +43 664 5356127

Orient Lounge — This cool lounge-bar between the city market and the Gymnasium [grammar school] features drinks, food and hookahs, in other words everything that one could expect in an oriental theme bar. Inside the rectangular bar with wraparound counter dominates, complete with expert bartender displaying his skills. The seating areas are really comfortable and the music has been chosen to relax and de-stress. The mainly younger regular guests and night owls reflect the multi-cultural flair with their outrageous styles. This establishment has a huge selection of cocktails, refined teas and fine single malts. Top-quality cigars round the evening off perfectly in an oriental-inspired atmosphere.

Hugos — Hugos in Dornbirn is a small, friendly place. It is underground, literally, located in the basement of the former ‘Hirschen-Haus’ (opposite the Steini) on Marktplatz. This place can get really busy, serving up cocktails, soft drinks, beers and spritzers. Theme nights, such as gothic, electro or ‘Tote Hosen’ attract plenty of people looking to dance and party. This bar has cult potential. And when they have a live concert here the place really rocks. A visit here is an absolute must – and of course you’ll keep coming back! 2 Hugos-Bar Marktplatz 12

Anziehbar — I virtually grew up in this bar. Back then it was just the café, which turned into a bar at night. Later the café was expanded with the addition of the club below. It could be said then that the Anziehbar has two faces – above you can sit with friends for a relaxed coffee and chat, then from Thursdays to Saturdays the club in the cellar is open until 3 a.m. for dancing and partying. Because this location is very popular at weekends, I recommend that you come a little earlier. The music can certainly not be described as mainstream, with ever-changing DJs, theme parties and regular live bands. My favourite is the curiously named ‘LaBoum’ party, where all the big soft rock hits are played and the Anziehbar is transformed into a kitschy disco and everyone gets all sentimental and nostalgic, weepy and ecstatic. The ‘Gin Limonana’ is popular – homemade lemonade with mint and gin. Classics such as the ‘Zombie’ or ‘Long Island Ice Tea’ are always on the drinks menu.

Klappe 2 — A small, traditional pub in Dornbirn’s Marktplatz. The movie theme is ever-present and pervades the entire establishment. The small, friendly Klappe is often full, but this lends it a certain cosiness. There is a large choice of spirits and the music is the far side of mainstream in a timeless atmosphere. This is a great place for a beer at the bar or to meet up with friends for a catch-up. Occasionally there is also live music at Klappe 2 – then it is really jumping. In the warm summer months, the whole thing moves outside. One drink that is absolutely loved here is a shot called ‘D’Ghängte’ (‘the hanged man’). Otherwise gins and whiskies are also popular. When I arrive at the bar with my friends, it is absolutely rammed full – the guests are listening to the guitar solo of a reggae musician and the atmosphere is rocking. There are concerts here roughly twice each month. The barkeeper, who is just serving a whisky to the guy beside me, is sporting a nifty pair of braces and reminds me of the sort of cheeky chappy you would happily meet in a pub in Ireland.

Mr. John’s — I have known Mr. John’s since it first opened 23 years ago and it always moves with the times. When I was young(er) it was the place to go for Mexican food. As Asian food then grew more and more popular, they opened up the Orient Lounge on the upper floor, complete with seating areas and hookahs. Over the last two years Ike has given the whole place a vintage touch. The American Bar has retained its original look. In a way Mr. John’s could be described as quaint and is complete with disco and dance floor. Depending on season and trend, the drinks menu is tweaked on occasion. For example, the ‘Brain’ shot is very popular at Halloween. By the way, Mr. John’s was one of the first places in Dornbirn that really celebrated Halloween. There’s something for everyone at Mr. John’s, irrespective of whether you simply want to hang out at the bar with a Long Island Ice Tea or would rather play darts, table football or pool. The food menu at Mr. John’s contains things like American burgers, finger food and, depending on season, soups and salads.

Rätschkachl — The name is typically Dornbirn and means a person who cannot keep a secret. A right gossip, you could say. Entertainment value in the best sense of the words, the founders of Rätschkachel back in the 80s tried to lend this cellar bar a touch of the Broadway or Soho. Since then many generations have made a pilgrimage to this elegant, refined location, complete with vaults. This is a great place to talk over fine wine or sophisticated drinks, or maybe for a birthday celebration or another celebratory occasion. Or maybe simply for an evening of elegance and sophistication, a celebration of life. The ‘Rätsche’ attracts guests both from the city and from farther afield, even from across the borders Patrick Österle manages this establishment and has a keen sense for what his guests want. In addition to the cool bar, the lounge restaurant is extremely popular. It is often full, reservations are required. But well worth the effort for the juicy steaks, ‘Wu-Nus’ (cult sausage noodles) and other sophisticated dishes delivered from the Rätsche’s excellent kitchen.

Conrad Sohm — Conrad Sohm, also known as ‘der Prachtclub’ [Pracht = splendour, grandeur], is one of the absolute legends of Dornbirn’s nightlife scene. The location on the road to Gütle is unique. The building is a former water works from the time of the Austrian monarchy, which was remodelled by various artists at the beginning of the nineties and adapted as a nightclub. Conrad Sohm has for a long time been known across the borders of three countries as being THE club to visit in the region. Many of the genuine giants of the music scene have played at Sohm, for example Faithless, Queens of the Stone Age, Deichkind and Beatsteaks. The public are equally as varied as the ever-changing programme and the artists and DJs appearing here. In collaboration with the authorities of Vorarlberg, the club also supports and nurtures young local artists through annual talent contests. Occasionally there are also smaller events in the form of exhibitions, readings and cabarets. My top drinks tip at Conrad Sohm is the legendary ‘Turbo Gin’.

Club Vakanz — Party in a cellar with vaults? Now that’s something different! This club would easily be at home in the big city and evokes memories of the underground clubs of Amsterdam. It is really noticeable that everyone working here – from the people in the cloakroom to barman to DJ – really wants to be here with all of their heart. Something to drink? Why not an excellent gin and tonic, Jack and cola, a vodka Makava or perhaps something classic like a Frangelico? The drinks menu has virtually everything you can imagine. The vaulted cellars are also occasionally rented out for private functions, however the Vakanz is primarily a club in which dancing and flirting are the norm. A place where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy an unforgettable night of partying. Due to its prime location, right in the heart of the city, the club is always popular. In recent years Vakanz has firmly established itself on the Vorarlberg club scene – for guests 21 and above. 2 Marktstraße 33

„wirtschaft“ — If you feel like putting on your dance shoes in Dornbirn or watching a great live concert, an excellent choice is „wirtschaft“. „wirtschaft“ is a multi-dimensional entertainment centre – restaurant, club, bar music venue and theatre all rolled into one. There are a variety of things on offer depending on time of day. Each month as many as 9 concert or comedy evenings, including dinner, are on the menu. This establishment has also been inspired by venues such as the Comic Strip Live Club in New York and the Comedy Stores in London and three times each month it hosts a three-hour performance by a varied bill of stand-up comedians. A hilarious way to unwind after a hard day’s work. The ‘Flying-Dinner’ evenings also have many surprises in store – you will know the artist that you are going to see, however you will not be told what is on the menu. Well-known bands from the Austro-pop scene have played at these events, for example Wolfgang Ambros. A varied and entertaining post-work evening is guaranteed at the „wirtschaft“!

Engel — The Engel has a rich history. In 1906 the tavern was bought by Agatha Scheuermair, widowed with three children. A few years beforehand the Engel had been completely burnt to the ground in a fire and totally rebuilt by master builder Johann Albrich. In 1982 Brigitte Sulzmann renovated the tavern and reopened it with her husband Guntram Sulzmann (known as ‘Sulpa’). The Engel flourished under Gitte and became a popular haunt for night owls and bikers. A jovial atmosphere reigns and this place should be called rascals [Bengel] with of course plenty of banter and fun, and plenty of beer and tasty snacks. Decoration is in a Country and Western style with loads of Easy Rider flair. Gitte, Sulpa & Co are genuine Harley fans and have even ridden Route 66. The Engel also hosts live gigs and then the place rocks. Since May 2009 Gitte’s niece, Heidi Unterscheider, took over the tavern as the latest convivial hostess in the family line. And a good thing too because Oberdorf would be unthinkable without the old school Engel bar and its old school rascals.

Spielboden — The varied programme ranges from theatre, dance, live music and film to cultural events and cult parties. There is the ‘Kantine’ bar, an events hall, a cinema for up to 50 people and a beer garden. The Spielboden’s Kantine bar has a long service counter with plenty of bar stools, a large selection of drinks and seasonal snacks. It is ideal for a quiet drink before watching a film at the cinema or meet up at a later hour for party time! As a huge fan of cider, I am particularly pleased with the broad choice. For beer lovers, there is also a large variety

of international brands and a constantly-changing craft beer selection, as well as Austrian classics. As well as the ‘Gin Rose’, my tip if you fancy a long drink is the simply named ‘Vodka Night’. The selection of spirits, such as gins and whiskies, and the latest trends in alcohol-free lemonades offer the perfect something for every taste. 5 Färbergasse 15 T +43 5572 2193316 spielboden.at

BANKING TODAY AND TOMORROW The demands on the banking industry of today – and especially tomorrow – have fundamentally changed. The Volksbank Vorarlberg in Dornbirn is putting into practice its understanding of a modern bank with customer care of the highest quality on two levels.

82

Modern competence centre — Competences are combined and synergies are used in the Dornbirn consultation centre. The branch for private customers is now complemented by a corporate customer centre as well as the two subsidiaries Volksbank Vorarlberg Versicherungs-Makler and Volksbank Vorarlberg Immobilien. Thanks to the close collaboration between interdisciplinary teams, a large range of services and products can be offered from a single source. Customers benefit from the knowledge of numerous experts, whether it concerns financing, investments, insurances, or real estate sale.

Private banking in the marketplace — By opening a new private banking headquarters right in the marketplace in Dornbirn, the service quality of the regional banking institution received a fresh look. One of the primary objectives was to make customer proximity perceptible and create a pleasant atmosphere for high-level consultations. Another particular focus is the “careful investment”, which the private banking specialists offer to the customers. This involves discussion of sustainable investments and economic, ecological and social considerations are taken into account. In other words, a promising investment that will meet the demands “of tomorrow”.
