Trust me when I tell you that spine is important; For when you get the spine wrong, the entire cover layout goes to waste. Pay attention to the spine!

THE COVER DESIGN PROCESS AT BLUEROSE 18

The task gets assigned on Proofhub when Author provides the Brief over mail We read and understand the Brief We contact the author and discuss the brief and our interpretation of the brief with them We then ideate the layout and rough on paper (what will go where, what can be drawn in terms of Illustration (if any)) We then prepare the file on photoshop according to the dimensions (taking the spine as half inch) and design the cover We mail it to the author for approval If the author gives changes, we go back to 5, if the author doesn’t give changes we move the file for ISBN Once the ISBN number for the particular book arrives, we calculate the spine according to the page numbers, add the final MRP decided by author and attach ISBN in the cover. The file is then sent again to author for approval Once approved, the file is then moved to print for printing

1. 2.5 words, it’s something greater than Love about BRIEF Written by Ms. Shikha Dwiwedi, this life story of a boy Manas Bhargava takes us through the journey of the struggles, ups & downs of life, highs & lows of emotions, the complexity & ease of the threads of different relationships that we have in our life, the crossroads that challenge our decisions & the level of sacrifice a person can make for the one he/ she loves.

As music & art are important parts of this story so, the first design is according to that. Half of it is coloured & the other half is black & white with the dominance of music. It’s just a rough idea. I hope you would design it better if you follow this design, with proper adjustments & alignments & a cleaner design.

CONCEPT The main objective was to portray the impact of art and music revolving around the story in the cover, as according to the author, these were the main essence of the book. The Author wanted something different and interesting and gave me full freedom to explore on my own. The book cover was based entirely on the Bauhaus grid which gave a sense of ‘different’ and ‘interesting’ while depicting a ‘both side cover’ i.e can make sense from both sides (up and down). In the cover, we can see a guitar merge into a paintbrush on the same grid giving it an interesting and curious look.

Image reference given by the Author

green along ‘maroon’ and black to balance out the colour pop. The text on the front side of the cover has been written in ‘Bauhaus Std’ to make it relatable with the Bauhaus grid and align it better visually.

The author wanted neon and exciting colour palette thus the colours used are orange, neon

2. AN AFFAIR IN MUMBAI

about BRIEF Written by Mr. Jay Mishra, this is the story revolving around a boy Neeraj whose vision was to earn the money he did not have in his early childhood. Neeraj’s sudden demise has all the characters and readers confused. This story will make the reader feel their presence and make them want to read further on. This story at the end is treason towards an untainted love, thriller and suspense.

“Book cover design must come with the gateway of India, Taj hotel, and local train packed with travellers showing one character struggling to get into the train to portray the subject of the story.” The male protagonist must be almost hanging out of the door of the train, while the female protagonist sits on the window seat next to the gate opposite the boy involved in her own life.

CONCEPT The main objective was to portray the essence of Mumbai. According to the Author, the outsiders who haven’t been to Mumbai relate to it with Taj Hotel and India Gate which is why he wants it on the cover to show the essence of his story which is based in the Mumbai. As mentioned in the brief he also wanted to showcase a local train station, local train with a crowd of people hanging at it’s doors, barely being able to hold on, which is a common scene in Mumbai Locals. He wanted to portray the chemistry between both the protagonists while showing the situation in a Mumbai Local. He also wanted to portrait the sea between Taj Hotel and the India Gate.

to fit all these elements in a 5 by 8 inch space and still find space for title and Author’s name. Finding space and not clash colors was the biggest stepping stone in this cover. Due to this, I had to plan out several layouts on paper before moving to the final illustration which was difficult and intricate. At the end, the layout which felt right was that in the hue of brick red with a pinch of blue open to interpretation whether it’s the sea or the sky. The title is a mix of ‘Eloquent Pro’ and ‘Storefront’ to depict thriller, drama and romance while the Author’s name is written in ‘Ivy Presto Display’ as he wanted it on top elegantly like ‘Durjoy Datta’ books.

The difficulty that I faced in this cover was -

3. LOVE THAT MADE ME

about BRIEF Written by Mr. Jugraj Singh, this is the story revolving around his own life and experiences. The mistakes he made and the lessons he learnt. This is a story based on his observations while he travelled in various parts of the world.

The Author had nothing particular in his mind regarding the cover. He just wanted a list of things to be portrayed on the cover like a boy and a girl, San Francisco and Indra Gandhi International Airport, names of certain places as if written on various train stations in India and car plate numbers.

According to his this is the book our generation will be able to relate to and enjoy.

Along with all this he wanted the cover to not look like one of usual love stories.

CONCEPT As there was no visual expectations from the Author’s end, I got the chance to explore a lot in this cover. One of the biggest problems was to fit all these expectations in a single cover page while making it look unusual.

frozen in time on both sides of the cover as if photographed by someone. On the front side, I have also depicted names of places in little yellow boxes outlined with black like they are written on various train stations in India along with few Car Numbers. They have all been carefully placed behind the silhoutte of the male protagonist as if associated with him and revolving around him.

The cover page is a full-spread cover page, that depicts a story. But a person will only see a glimpse of the story on the front side and would find it abstract unless he switches to the back side of the cover. The front side showcases the silhoutte of the male protagonist in San Francisco airport, while the back side showcases the silhoutte of the female protagonist at Indra Gandhi International Airport.

The title is written in ‘Timberline’ script as its like a personalized memoir, while the Author’s name is written in ‘Courier New’ as if its written on a typewriter by him.

What I have tried to depict are two moments

4. ‘PANDITAAINJI’

about BRIEF Written by Mr. Rajesh Kumar Shukla (Vidyapati), this is the story revolving around his grandmother, Late Ms. Savitri Devi Nandlal Shukla. A woman who defied the norms for women back in 1930’s in preindependent India. The strory talks about Ms. Savitri acting as an early feminist and helping a lot of women going against the society during that time.

The Author wanted the book cover to display a hand with bangles breaking chains depicting feminism with an elegant border on the side.

CONCEPT As this project was passed to me from another designer, I was under pressure to make it better. When I talked to the Author he told me to do what works best according to me as their initial idea wasn’t working out. In my initial design the idea I used was to have an imprint of the woman. Not show her entirely but depict her presence and depict her strength by the posture. I used a dark red color to depict social revolution.

The first draft made by designer Joshua Frietas

The Second Draft made by designer Joshua Frietas

The Author asked for a more defined portrait of Ms. Savita and wanted me to make the color brighter along with having an India’s map with people in the backround. The First Draft made by me.

31

The second draft of the book looked too cluttered and the title wasn’t clearly visible either. The idea of the map was dropped and for the final version we decided to do a fairly less detailed portrait of Ms. Savita instead of an imprint having a vermillion ‘bindi’, a medal of honor bound in her ‘mangalsutra’ and a shattered chain behind. We kept the striking bright red and the typefaces from the first draft i.e ‘AMS Indu’ for the title as it was interesting and elegant and ‘Kruti Dev 053 for the Author’s name.

The Second draft for the book as suggested by the author.

We also had to place a heavy golden frame around the Author’s image because the author wanted it.

The artwork used for the second draft.

Even with multiple revisions, this project is very closed to me as I was very inspired after reading the story of Ms. Savitri Devi Nandlal Shukla. The Final Artwork

5. PAPER PLANES AND HOPES

about BRIEF Written by Mrs. Payal Sagar, ‘Paper Planes and Hopes’ is a collection of free-verse poems and prose. The purpose of this book is to motivate readers to move forward in life. The everyday little happenings may bother you, but, never lose sight of the bigger picture. And so what, if the bigger picture itself is blurry!!!? The confusion and, the anxiety is all that will make better days brighter.

CONCEPT

The Author wanted to portray paper planes turning into birds and usage of colour blue and white to signify hope and positivity.

The first draft made by designer Joshua Frietas

As this project was passed to me from another designer, I was under pressure to make it better. When I talked to the Author she told me that she liked the concept in the cover but she would want to make it nicer and interesting. I got the freedom to work on the concept. My initial concept was to show a subtle transition of birds to paper planes as we revolve around the mountains. It looked too cluttered with the text so we tried simplifying it further while trying to maintain the subtle transition and landed up with our final cover. The first draft made by me (on right)

6. SUGAR AND SPICE

about BRIEF Written by Mrs. Sonali Punj SIngh, this is the story of Radha and Kartik, who fall in love after their engagement. The story has reflections of the life of different couples and their struggles, trying to create a balance between their desires and expectations of the society. “Radha, the sugar, who melts with everything, making everyone happy with her sweet demeanor. Kartik, the spice, who stands proud, knowing that everyone around him will change according to his will.”

The Author asked me to make the cover “international and unfamiliar”. She did not want the cover to look like a cover of some love story. No reference image or any other reference was provided by the author. The Author gave me all the freedom to explore in terms of concept and color.

CONCEPT The main concept behind this cover was to portray the two faces of the protagonists against one another but make it as a whole. The idea was to portray the thought of the author that ‘no matter how different the protagonists were from each other, they could not leave each other and kept coming back to one another.’

Demo’ for ‘Spice’ as it is comparatively a rough and edgy script font. The Idea was to portray variations in script fonts. Why only Script fonts? Its a fact that nature of a person can be told by looking at their handwriting, the way the make the curves and the edges. Thus, we thought depicting the nature of our main characters through fonts against a white abstract shape will come out interestingly.

The color red was used as the background because it looked more attractive compared to the other backgrounds Also, unknowingly in the end we had subconsciously chosen colors of sugar and the spice for the final outcome.

Note: This was considered an interesting cover by the co-founder of BlueRose Publishers and is often used in their advertisements.

The font used were ‘Great Vibes’ for ‘Sugar’ as it is a sweet, elegant font and ‘Billbest

7. THE RADAINCE WITHIN

about BRIEF Written by Mr. Mayank Bansal, The Radiance Within is a heartwarming story of Sanya Boira, born in a poor family at Mirzapur. The extreme poverty pushes her parents to hand her as a bonded laborer to a carpet merchant. Sanya manages to overturn her ill-faith but gravitates towards more daunting challenges of life. The continuum of dusk and dawn in her life keeps her striving hard until she meets her spiritual mentor and starts reworking it out towards a more purposeful life.

The Author requested me to read the story as its a 45 page story and then come up with a concept of my own that depicts this story the best.

CONCEPT Ganges. She greeted me with all her natural serenity and calmness. I had lost the track of time since that evening. Nevertheless, the turbulence of mind was decreasing with each quiet wave of the river embracing my feet as if the mother Ganges”

After reading the story, my concept was to somehow illustrate the mills factory, the main protagonist, both the cities of Mirzapur and Banaras. But after discussing with the author, he told me that he would like me to visualize the following paragraph, as it captured the essence of the story.

-An excerpt from ‘The Radiance Within; Chapter - 8; The Ecstasy of Freedom’

“The divine Ganges had always treated me like a caring mother who cuddles the baby in her arms and listens tirelessly to him, until the child was free from any doubt and becomes carefree again. I needed the same miracle to happen again, this time much more badly.

I tried to restrict the palette of the buildings to make them appear like the time of dusk. The font used for both title and Author’s name is ‘Lovelo’.

I reached the Ghat. It had started getting crowded. I sat down there immersing my feet in cold waters of

BRIEF Book designing for ‘Little Pluto’ written by Anushka The brief for the project was to make an attractive children’s book with illustrations for the age group between 4 to 8 years which portrays the Author’s script about thee existence of Pluto. The Author sent us the script with each page’s content being followed by what the illustration should portray. The script sent by the author has been attached below.

What did not work out? The ‘Kawai’ facial expressions with red blush didn’t work for the author. She also thought this was too ‘2d’ and wanted to incorporate more texture like real planets. Expression: Sad 66

base VERSIONS OF texture for planets Mercury is actually supposed to be silver as it is a rocky planet with a cratered surface like Earth’s moon, but making it in greys and white made it too similar to the moon so we made it yellow and cratered.

Venus is a planet with composition like Earth but its atmosphere has layers of carbon dixoide (93%) which looks lines on the plant. This version of Venus is inspired by the actual look of Planet Venus.

Earth, our home planet is 70% water and 30% land. This version of Earth is inpired by the original image of Earth in space from the side of America. Although, in the book, we have used the Earth with India being reflected on it.

67

Mars has a red surface with a lot of volcanoes. We made Mars in a way that it looks full of craters and in case we want to show it angry, we can replace those craters into bursting volcanoes on its surface.

Jupiter is a gas giant covered in swirling cloud strips that gives it a layered appearance along with its popular red cloud storm. We have tried to match the character of Jupiter to its original photographs.

Saturn is a planet known for its rings. Like Jupiter it also has a gasous structure therefore the layered appearance. Although Saturn has seven rings with gaps between them, we have used four rings conjoined as one as seven felt too wide. 68

Uranus is an ice giant and has a clean bluegreen surface because of the presence of Methane Gas. Uranus also contains two rings which are not known to many people, so we tried incorporating that. We later changed its appearance to icier and removed the rings to avoid confusion with Saturn. Neptune is the coldest planet of our solar system and it has a dark blue appearance due to the presence of methane and hydrogen. That is what we have tried to incorporate in this Neptune. We added a cap later to make it appear colder.

BOY AS ASTRONAUT

69

The character of the boy is supposed to be an Earthling that meets Pluto. The idea was to make him smiley with cute big eyes. The hair of the boy was made lighter so that they don’t get blended in the background when its in spacesuit.

As Pluto is supposed to be the main protagonist of the story, we had to make him cuter while trying to keep his appearance similar to the original version of it. We thought of making the Pluto in the shade of light browns and creme because it’s known for its rocky mountains and frozen valleys We have also incorporated craters because of the same reason, Pluto being a rocky planet. The Puto has a huge heart shape glacier which we have incorporated in our character as it makes it look cuter as a protagonist.

Consistency through out characters: Consistency throughout the characters for having been maintained by using layers of transparency and multiple overlapping of layers that make all the planets look 3d like marbles.

FINAL COVER DESIGN

The concept for the final cover approved by Author: Other planets are playing together around the sun and Pluto is trying to become a part of them. At the end of the story, planets play with Pluto regardless of its status as a Planet which is a metaphor for young kids to motivate them to do what makes them happy regardless of the labels society puts on them. The cover as Pluto trying to approach the planets to play seemed the most suitable because,

“often the first step towards anything is the hardest and requires bravery” To read the book in it’s full form go to https://www.behance.net/ gallery/106734909/Little-Pluto-bookdesign-under-BlueRose-Publishers

PROJECT Covers for series of Classics Brief

To make harmonious illustrations for a set of books i.e. Hesten Classics

Summary

Making paperback covers with harmonious spine and style for Classics

Time Span : 1 week for the whole project

96

BRIEF Recreating covers for Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice The brief for the project was to make a similar book covers for 2 of the classics - Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice so that they can be released from the premium BlueRose imprint of Hesten. The covers are supposed to be made in a form of series so that later more classics can be launched under the name ‘Hesten Classics’ with the similar manner of covers and spine so that it can be sold as box sets. The key requirement for both the covers was ‘they are supposed to eye-

catching and pretty’ Why eyecatching and pretty? As various versions of classics are already in the market, people would not buy them for the story or the disclaimer at the back of the book. A book hoarder would pick it up if it’s pretty because a classic under any publication will always be a collectable. That is why we needed eye-catching and pretty.

97

INSPIRATION FOR developing the series

98

version 1 Concept: The idea was to illustrate pretty ‘Disney-like’ characters for both the books ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’. For Frankenstein, I illustrated Victor Frankenstein as a sad ‘Disney prince’ and used Garamond as a font for the title while keeping the cover minimal and neat. It was rejected.

What did not work out? As the target audience was adult ‘book hoarders’ and not kids, the book might not have been able to sell too many copies. Apart from that, the cover looked a little bland and a little ‘too soft’ for Frankenstein as Frankenstein is supposed to be spooky. Illustration of Viktor Frankenstein (on top)

Mockup for the initial idea (below)

99

version 2 For Idea 2, the concept was to play around with fantasy textures whose colours would suit the theme of the book. Therefore keeping the colour blue for Frankenstein as in dark, deep and mysterious...

Book cover mockup for Frankenstein (on top)

Book cover mockup forPride and Prejudice (below)

...and green for Pride and Prejudice as soothing calm and light-hearted.

What did not work? As the company don’t want to invest in embossed printing, the glitter would not show, thus making the cover dull.

100

version 3 For Idea 2, the concept was to play around with more abstract textures whose colours would suit the theme of the book and might have less printing cost. Therefore keeping the colours purple yellow and grey for Frankenstein...

Book cover mockup for Frankenstein (on top)

Book cover mockup for Pride and Prejudice (below)

...and colours blue, red and yellow for Pride and Prejudice

What did not work? The book seemed too abstract and the textures had no meaning whatsoever.

101

FINAL CONCEPT FOR BOTH BOOKS

After versions 2 and 3 we realized that abstract patterns might not sell as much because our company isn’t a big name like ‘Penguin Random House’ or ‘Bloomsbury’. We then thought of the idea of ‘contemporizing the classics with the help of popular culture’. Almost all of the classics have been made into films several times. As a generation who is more into films than books, we banked upon the idea to make art inspired from iconic film scenes to make the classics more relatable to the younger audience while still keeping it beautiful for older collectors. We decided to use the following scenes for our book covers.

Excerpt from Frankenstein 1931

Excerpt from Pride and Prejudice 1995

These two scenes were particularly picked by us due to their humour. They are both hilarious scenes. On the left is the scene where Victor Frankenstein stumbles upon the monster for the first time and on the right is the scene where Mr. Darcy expresses his feelings towards Elizabeth through a letter while unconsciously making fun of Elizabeth and her family. The humour connects the series along with clouds, sun/moon, similar plant texture, restricted colour palette, the disclaimer font ‘Ivy Presto Display’, Author’s name’s font ‘Birch Std’, same layout in the spine with colour blocking and the vector illustration art style. 102

PROJECT

Cover & Editorial Illustrations Brief

To make cover design and illustrations for chapter segmentation for the book ‘Nesting the Garden of Life’ by Neelima Khemchandani.

Summary

Making paperback book cover for size 5*8 along with page breaks for each chapter.

Time Span : 3 days for the whole project

108

NESTING THE GARDEN OF LIFE

about BRIEF Written by Ms. Neelima Khemchandani, Nesting the Garden of Life conceptualises and compares life to a garden where every seed we sow in the soil grows into a plant.

Since the book has conceptualized “Life as a garden where each chapter unfolds that life is similar to sowing the seeds and expecting a garden to harvest and how to take care of this growing garden at each step; the cover page should be able to depict similarly.

The chapters reveal how to cultivate this life into a garden of contentment and happiness. We all have been provided just one life and in this one life, we have one opportunity to cultivate the best garden of life. The book unfolds chapter by chapter on how to select a seed carefully, sow them, and harvest the best garden to cherish. It does not matter where we are in our lives right now, what age group we belong, and what we wish to pursue in our lives. If we understand the basics right and make them clear in our life, nobody can stop our garden from burgeoning into the one we all would love to adore and live in each day.

We can refer to the attached images and use a girl doodle with long hair (as shown) trying to harvest her garden with peace and happiness. Around the girl, we can show small seeds being sown, some half-grown plants, some full-grown trees, water, soil, etc. to show that it is about cultivating this life as a garden.

We all can turn our lives into the cream of a crop and enjoy the delicacy each day!

Concept For this cover, I conceptualized and created a girl in long hair watering plants to house plants as the author wanted. The illustration was coloured like a soft watercolour style to make it seem pleasant like the reference on the left.

CONCLUSION My Learning Experience

Have you ever felt like a learning experience was a bliss? Well, mine was. Even though the deadlines were insane and time dedicated to each project was very less, I enjoyed every bit of this experience at BlueRose Publishers Pvt Ltd. As my first experience in a commercial setting, I got a lot of creative freedom to explore concepts through my work, have a one-on-one conversation with the respective authors, read exclusive manuscripts and work on various projects. I also got the opportunity to learn the nitty-gritty of publication design. How to design a cover, a spine, a book, a poster and other printables like business cards and magazines. I also learnt to set my documents for print settings. Few of my files even went wrong while going for print, but I was always treated kindly and taught things.

One of the most satisfying aspects of my job role was being able to see my name under ‘Cover Designer’ on the copyrights page for the various projects I worked on. Certain important things I learnt in my internship are as follows 1. Importance of Time Management 2. A designer must learn to convince clients, because no matter how much effort you make if you can’t sell it to the client, chances are you would have to redo it again. 3. Creativity flourishes with hard work, in tight schedules and when you least expect it to. 4. Spine of the Book is as important as the margins and colour setup of the InDesign document. 5. Be Vocal. If you will ask for help, help shall be provided. But you gotta ask.

117

6. Creative blocks are real but sleep helps. 7. You always design it in your head first. 8. Pen/pencil & paper will always be your best friends; literally. 9. Don’t be scared of trying something unusual. Chances are the client would like it if you try something different. If not, at least you would have the bliss of trying something interesting. 10. Type play is important, in book covers. 11. The world hasn’t stopped amidst the lockdown, and so shouldn’t we. Publication Industry is a very hectic industry; it’s demanding, but it’s worth it. Seeing a print or a new book that you got an opportunity to work on would always be the most satisfactory thing for me as a design student. And for experiencing that, at the back -end was quite an exciting experience for me and for that I would always be thankful.
