Agnes Irwin 2023-24 Annual Report

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM | SALLY KEIDEL

As I enter my 32nd year in academia, I am struck anew by the cyclical nature of schools. Each fall at The Agnes Irwin School brings a new beginning — new faces, new learning, new opportunities — all built on the foundation of 155 years of educating girls.

This Annual Report that I share with you is much more than a compilation of lists. The almost 1,600 names reflected in this report are alumnae, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff members, and friends of our school, representing decades of learning, leading, and living a legacy. These names, each of you, are at the very center of the cycle of academia, the foundation of The Agnes Irwin School. It is these names, the people they represent, and this commitment to girls-centered education that makes it possible for us to provide the necessary resources to support each girl’s academic journey and lifelong fulfillment through excellent academics, athletic and art facilities, dynamic curriculum, and faculty professional development.

So, as I welcome new faces to this new school year at Agnes Irwin, I greet familiar friends. I bid our best wishes to the Class of 2024 off on their college journey, and I look forward to all that’s ahead with the wonderful Class of 2025 at the helm. Please accept my deepest gratitude for these gifts that enable our work to continue. Thank you for your support, for your trust, and for your love of this school.

Thank you for your generosity,

“At AIS I learned the power of WHY NOT? Why not me? Why not ask? Why not go for it? This powerful question has helped to make me a success both professionally and personally. I’m grateful both AIS and I can pass this learning/lesson on to my girls.”

The commitment of our entire community, past and present, contributes to the financial strength of our school and makes extraordinary teaching and learning possible here each day. Through The Agnes Irwin Fund, Capital, Endowment and Planned Gifts, our steadfast supporters fuel our mission and our vision, moving it forward. We share our gratitude to the many alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, grandparents, trustees, faculty, staff and friends who stand strong together in purpose through their gifts to Agnes Irwin. Every gift of every size supports the important work we do today, while strengthening our legacy for tomorrow.

Agnes Irwin is a school built on excellence. For more than 155 years, our graduates have applied the lessons they learned at Agnes Irwin to effecting change in their communities and around the world. Our challenge now, as it has always been, is to sustain excellence for the legacy of its graduates and for the coming generations. We are charged with continuously growing our academic and extracurricular programs to meet the ever-changing demands of an increasingly global community. The Agnes Irwin Fund enables us to do so with the ability to hire talented faculty, coaches and staff as well as offer superior programming on our beautiful campus. We have immense appreciation for each gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TO | AIS

WHAT IS THE AGNES IRWIN FUND?

The Agnes Irwin Fund is the name of AIS’ largest annual fundraising effort which is commonly called The Annual Fund. It supports the overall budget of the school, enabling Agnes Irwin to provide the highest quality experience to our students. It helps provide enriching and empowering educational experiences beyond what tuition supports. A high level of community participation creates a shared commitment for the school to succeed in its mission.

Independent schools like Agnes Irwin cannot operate on tuition dollars alone. Committing to support The Agnes Irwin Fund has an immediate and direct impact on our girls’ experience at AIS. Programs like AIS Allied, Agnes Irwin’s cohort-style career mentor program, and the retention of exceptional faculty would simply not be possible without The Agnes Irwin Fund.

Tuition does not cover the gap in the operating budget which exists at every independent school. It allows schools to keep tuition several thousand dollars lower while securing a school’s ability to operate competitively.

By mitigating the cost of tuition, The Agnes Irwin Fund helps to keep AIS accessible to a broader population of families while still being able to recruit and retain top faculty with competitive salary and benefits packages.

Of note: Unlike tuition payments, donations to The Agnes Irwin Fund are tax-deductible.

WHAT ARE OTHER WAYS I CAN SUPPORT AGNES IRWIN?

There are three additional ways of supporting excellence at Agnes Irwin:

Pennsylvania’s State Tax Credit Programs

The state of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs allow both individuals and businesses to redirect tax dollars to The Agnes Irwin School. When an approved individual or business contributes to AIS through either program, they receive tax credits up to 90% of their total contribution to the school. This year Agnes Irwin raised over $1.6 million which went directly to offsetting the tuition assistance budget and very meaningfully contributed to the school’s financial health.

The Agnes Irwin Endowment Fund

The Agnes Irwin School’s endowment provides critical long-term support for the school. Gifts to the endowment strengthen and reinforce the legacy of Agnes Irwin for generations to come.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts are those with a donor-specified purpose. Whether it be the purchase of equipment, sponsoring a visiting scholar, or helping fund a scholarship, these gifts are earmarked for a specific purpose and are separate from a gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

Parents’ Association

Parents’ Association is dedicated to fostering positive school spirit, supporting AIS through fundraising activities and providing opportunities for community engagement. While gifts to the Parents’ Association are not counted toward a donor’s overall giving to Agnes Irwin in the Annual Report, they make a significant contribution to the school. Past donations to the Parents’ Association have paid for Faculty/Staff Lunch Support, classroom upgrades, prom, technology upgrades, among many others.

ANNUAL FUND CLASS CAPTAINS

The role of the Annual Fund Class Captain is to be an advocate for the Agnes Irwin Annual Fund and to promote a better understanding and appreciation for The Annual Fund among current parents. Ultimately, our goal is that this greater awareness will lead to higher parent participation in the Annual Fund and foster a more philanthropic parent community.

Our Class Captains focus on having strong class participation in The Agnes Irwin Fund. They play the critical role of communicators with parents within their grade. They also ’share’ social media related to The Agnes Irwin Fund. In addition, they are encouraged to attend our Spirit Week of Giving Phonathon and invite their friends to come along. The phonathon has a party-like atmosphere with music, food and refreshments and ends up being a great way to socialize with other Agnes Irwin parents while volunteering for a great cause.

We are grateful to this year’s Class Captains for all they have done!

BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY OF | GIVING

What a year! Thank you to everyone who made Spirit Week of Giving and Alumnae Day of Giving huge successes.

ALUMNAE DAY OF GIVING

Agnes Irwin’s Alumnae Day of Giving was held on March 13 and truly embodied the passion and comradery of our alumnae. The ambitious goal was to reach 300 donors by day’s end. There were fundraising challenges throughout the day and were met with rousing enthusiasm from multiple classes. The day was capped off with a fun phonathon in the evening at 672 Conestoga with music, food and refreshments.

Every 50th donor received a custom Agnes Irwin gift and Lauren Patterson Pearson ’98 was the winner of our Swag Bag Raffle.

The Class with the highest percentage of participation was featured in the Agnes Irwin Summer 2024 Magazine. Congratulations to the Class of 2004 who can be found on page 55!

Our incredibly dedicated alumnae volunteers all over the country reached out to their friends and family throughout the night, helping us surpass our goal. It was truly an incredible day! We could not be more proud to share that the goal was met and far exceeded.

Thank you to our donors from 64 classes and 29 states for helping us raise $67,000 from 372 donors.

SPIRIT WEEK OF GIVING

In November, we held our Annual Spirit Week of Giving, a week-long giving challenge leading up to AIS/EA Day. Our goal was to reach 450 donors which was truly ambitious. However we should not have been nervous because the Agnes Irwin community came together and delivered! We blew right past our goal with an astonishing number of 568 donors totaling $312,433! Equally incredible was our Lower School, 5th and 6th Grade families achieving 100% participation in the Annual Fund by the week’s end.* All of the Lower School girls, 5th and 6th grades, as well as the 9th grade (for highest participation in the Upper School) received an exclusive luncheon. Thank you to all of our donors and to those donors who commented on our Giving Page Wall, sharing with us why they love AIS and offering financial support to the school.

2023-2024 FACULTY AND STAFF CAPTAINS FOR THE ANNUAL FUND

Similar to the role of parent Class Captains, our Faculty and Staff Captains work to encourage participation from all members of our administration, faculty, and staff in giving to The Agnes Irwin Fund. We are grateful for their abundant enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring not only that all members of our faculty and staff make their pledge of support to our Annual Fund, but also that they convey an understanding and appreciation for how our Annual Fund impacts the lives of both our girls and our faculty and staff every day. Thanks to Chrissy, Clare and Colbert, we had an incredible 98% of our faculty and staff donate to The Agnes Irwin Fund!

AGNES IRWIN Q&A

| WHY I GIVE

AUDREY SIKDAR 3RD GRADE TEACHER

Why is it important to you, as an employee, to support The Agnes Irwin Fund?

As an employee, it’s crucial to contribute to the Annual Fund as a symbolic gesture to express my belief in our mission to empower each girl to learn, to lead, and to live a legacy. It’s a way to be a part of a galvanized group, a force to realize our vision. I’ve grown into the educator I am today thanks to the diverse range of professional development workshops and conferences supported by the annual fund. These opportunities have not only deepened my expertise but also enriched the learning experiences I bring to my students.

How have you seen first hand how supporting The Agnes Irwin Fund impacts our girls?

Each year, my grade partners and I are able to purchase the best tools to support learning and growth, thanks to the strength of the fund.

DONNA PAGE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR OF UPPER SCHOOL

Why is it important to you, as an employee, to support The Agnes Irwin Fund?

It is important to support the Agnes Irwin Fund because my contributions can assist in offering an Agnes Irwin education to girls who would otherwise struggle to access such resources. As an employee, I find fulfillment in

knowing my donations are directly impacting our girls and their long term growth here at Agnes Irwin. I have worked at the Agnes Irwin School for over 15 years and have chosen to support the fund every year. I am a part of this community and feel empowered to offer my full support to our students as frequently as possible.

How have you seen first hand how supporting The Agnes Irwin Fund impacts our girls?

I see every day how supporting The Agnes Irwin Fund impacts our girls. Not only does the Fund remove barriers by providing scholarships, it also promotes an inclusive atmosphere which is safe and enriching for all. The fund aims to enhance teacher quality through professional development and establish a curriculum that best prepares our girls for the future; one which focuses on success in the marketplace regardless of which profession they choose.

WALTERS

Why is it important to you, as an employee, to support The Agnes Irwin Fund?

I choose to support The Agnes Irwin Fund because the fund helps to enhance the overall educational experience for the students.

How have you seen first hand how supporting The Agnes Irwin Fund impacts our girls?

I have experienced the annual traditions that students participate in. These events are able to continue as a result of the Agnes Irwin Fund.

The Blue & Gold Society recognizes leadership gifts to the Agnes Irwin Fund, EITC/OSTC, the endowment, and Restricted Giving. The society is composed of donors whose annual contribution to Agnes Irwin, whether unrestricted or given for a specific purpose, totals $1,869 or more, in commemoration of the founding year of our school. It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge our leadership donors. Please note: Gifts to the Parents’ Association are separately raised each year and proceeds are used to benefit specific school projects.

“Being a Class Captain for the Agnes Irwin Fund really opened my eyes to the importance of giving to Agnes Irwin. When we learned that donations to girls’ schools are radically less than donations to boys’ schools, giving to AIS took on a new meaning for us. Making a donation to The Agnes Irwin School is an investment for our daughters’ future.”

Celebrating 50 Years

Each year, Agnes Irwin’s 50th Reunion Class celebrates a treasured alumnae milestone when distinguished, passionate, and loyal alumnae gather together from locations near and far. This past May, our Class of 1974 gathered in Rosemont for three days of parties, panels, and award ceremonies – and, most importantly, to cheer five decades of friendship. Reunion Weekend 2024 was busy for all attendees, but perhaps none more so than the Class of 1974. Celebrations began as our guests of honor gathered at the Head of School Luncheon on Friday afternoon. Classmates then enjoyed a guided tour of the house and gardens at Stoneleigh and their kickoff party at the Phillies game with many alumnae in attendance. Our ’74 alumnae visiting campus attended a student-led campus tour, a fireside chat with Sally Keidel, and a luncheon with over 150 alumnae reunion attendees. The class capped it all off with a barbeque at the home of Matt and Anne Fritchman Hamilton ’74 on Saturday evening.

THE CLASS GIFT

In the library, on the athletic fields and in the Pepsi Pit – the Class of 1974 loved to gather together as students of Agnes Irwin. In honor of their enduring closeness and formidable class spirit, the Class of 1974 chose a fitting gift to honor their 50th reunion and raised over $100,000 for a new community lounge and learning hub for students. A tribute to that lifelong feeling of togetherness, The Class of 1974 Student Lounge will be a thoughtfully-designed, cozy, collaborative space to learn together, connect, and hang out by the fireplace with your best friends.

ALUMNAE RECOGNITION

Every year, the Sophy Dallas Irwin Award is given to the Reunion class who has raised the highest total dollar amount by Reunion Weekend. Not surprisingly, the Class of 1974 rose to the occasion, collectively giving over $125,000 to their alma mater. Committee Co-Chairs Laurie Buck Marshall and Anne Fritchman Hamilton accepted the award on behalf of their class at the Reunion Luncheon, noting that it was 74s close-knit nature that inspired such generous giving.

A special thank you to our 50th Reunion Committee – Franny Moran Abbott, Sandy Buntin Arnold, Anne Fritchman Hamilton, Mary Cauffman Hastings, Suzy J. Helme, Holly Mayock Luff, Laurie Buck Marshall, Deborah Rammel McKeel and Gayne Hovsepian Yoel – for their efforts in leading the Class of 1974 through this memorable milestone.

The Class of 1974

“When considering what we could give to today’s students, we are thrilled to be able to support the creation of a new space where students can gather and build lifelong memories. The Class of ‘74 cherishes their memories of our years in the Pepsi Pit and we know this new space will be a favorite for future Agnes Irwin girls.”

PARENT | GIVING

Our parent community is unmatched, having hit record highs in participation in The Agnes Irwin Fund. The entire Lower School, our 5th grade and our 6th grade parents reached 100% participation during Spirit Week of Giving this year.* The average participation for the entire parent community is 80%, a remarkable feat! We are grateful to our incredible parent community and grateful to our Annual Fund Class Captains for their support and hard work throughout this past year.

The following lists include current parents who have made a contribution to The Agnes Irwin Fund. Gifts to the Parents’ Association and other funds are recognized separately.

“It is a privilege to send our children to The Agnes Irwin School; the greatest gift you can give your children is an amazing education. The EITC program allows our family to pay a portion of our PA State tax obligation directly to the school. This lets other students take advantage of this incredible education they otherwise wouldn’t have access to and we get the gratification of knowing that our tax dollars are going towards the further advancement of girls.”

Waste Management

Agnes Irwin is truly a school for girls. Fueled by our mission and with careful attention to the needs of our students, the Center for the Advancement of Girls, has helped to establish the school as a thought leader and change agent in girls’ education by culling research and information about girls in order to design a girlresponsive environment.

The Center’s work and over 150 years of experience teaching girls tells us that simply reducing the academic and social distraction that boys pose in the learning environment does not address or consider the layered messages girls receive about how they should behave nor what is expected of them as students. In Spring 2024, the Center produced a White Paper, which articulates six principles that ground Agnes Irwin’s approach to girl-centered teaching and learning:

• Voice

• Choice

• Clarity

• Connection

• Relevance

• Balance

At Agnes Irwin we are committed to valuing our girls’ voices. We scaffold experiences to challenge girls that simultaneously honor their strengths while pushing them to be adaptable and receptive to new ways of thinking. Our teachers forge deep relationships with our students in a way that honors our girls as whole, multidimensional people. We know that supporting them in exploring who they are and what they can do, will lead to each girl knowing her power, and using it to shape the future she wants for herself.

The six research-informed principles are woven into every facet of the student experience. From the classroom to the stage, the playing field to the community beyond the schoolhouse, the ways in which these principles guide our work are myriad. The Center’s research also directly informs our faculty evaluation and onboarding processes, how Admission frames what is important to our students’ experience, and how we examine the impact of our program.

It’s rare to catch Laura Wheeler Golding ’64 and Cinch Rugart ’73 without a Laurel Society pin on their lapel. “I wear that pin to everything,” Laura attests, continuing, “I am passionate about educating Irwin’s supporters about the Laurel Society and inviting them to join. They could have a pin, too!”

As two of Agnes Irwin’s most stalwart alumnae, Cinch and Laura are legendary in their support of the school, Cinch in her ubiquitous AIS blue blazer complete with Upper School felt adornments, and Laura and her classmates with their 4-year “streak” of weekly Zoom calls. The two women have spent decades volunteering for the school, holding leadership positions and spearheading events. They consider their roles as Laurel Society Co-Chairs however, as among their most important. “The Endowment is critical to ensuring the school we love continues as we know it,” Laura shares. “It absolutely is,” Cinch echoes, “the Endowment is Agnes Irwin’s principal, which is kept intact, while the income is used for ongoing operations and programs, generating consistent funds over time.”

Their tireless work over the past few years has helped secure 70 new Society members and approximately $10M in estate gifts. The generous Laurel members behind those gifts have their names hand-engraved on the Laurel Bowl, a beautiful silver piece originally donated by Cinch’s grandfather, Robert W. Rea. Cinch and Laura enjoy displaying the bowl at Laurel events, reminding members that one day, all of their names will be inscribed together in support of the school. “I’d love to see it like the Stanley Cup,” Laura jokes, “with multiple bands and layers needing to be added with the names of Irwin’s alumnae and friends.”

Founded 26 years ago in 1998 by 1953 Classmates Annabelle Pierson Irey and Pat McPherson, the Laurel Society recognizes those individuals who have included the school in their estate plans. Planned gifts include bequest intentions, retirement plan designations, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, and other forms of deferred support. Laurel Society members receive a gold laurel leaf pin and gather together at special events and their annual reunion weekend brunch and fall tea. The group is proud to count alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff among its membership. For additional information on the Laurel Society and how you can become a member, please contact mwelsh@agnesirwin.org or 610-801-1265. Or, if you happen to run into Laura or Cinch at an AIS event or out and about, ask them to show you their pin!

“We give to the Agnes Irwin Fund to support all the initiatives that are not covered by tuition alone. Agnes Irwin has provided an all-girls education to our four daughters that has gone far beyond the walls of the classroom. The Annual Fund is vital in providing support for teachers, arts and STEAM programming, extracurriculars, tuition assistance and so much more that creates a community for both students and parents that provides a foundation for life-long success!”
