elcome to the 16th annual Best of Amarillo magazine! Once again, readers of the Amarillo Globe-News have selected the recipients of the Best of Amarillo award, celebrating businesses, personalities and people who help make this a great place to work, live and play. We’ve been doing this reader’s choice award longer than any other entity in Amarillo, and we are appreciative of the support received from the voters and winners. And we are the only competition that delivers all the winners in a first-class publication that you’re holding in your hand! This edition is more than 120 pages and is the result of months of hard work by our staff to publish the results in an entertaining and informative magazine. It is our hope that you will use it to discover the best that this city has to offer. Thousands of you cast ballots every year and while many winners are the same, you can never count on winning. This year, we have new winners in several categories. Being the Best of Amarillo is important to the winners and voters alike. It’s a way for local businesses to gage their performance and for their clients to show support. And it’s not easy to win. You do have to be the best. For the fourth year, we’re also inducting new members into our Best of Amarillo Hall of Fame. Achieving the Hall of Fame requires the recipients to win the same category 10 times or more. This year, we honor 11 inductees: Green Chile Willy’s (Best Chicken-fried Steak), Coyote Bluff Cafe (Little Gem and Best-kept Secret), Texas Roadhouse (Overall Restaurant), The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery (Best Place to Take Outof-Towners), Quick Quack Car Wash (Best Car Wash), Lovett Chiropractic (Best Chiropractor), Suddenlink (Best Internet Provider), United Supermarkets (Best Groceries), Tripp’s Harley-Davidson (Best Motorcycle Dealership), Discount Tire (Best Tire Store), and Lee Baker of ABC News (Best TV Sportscaster). Congratulations! These inductees join more than 40 previous Hall of Famers from the hundreds of categories that comprise the Best of Amarillo. Also, there are seven Hall of Famers that have won every time in the 16-year history of the Best of Amarillo award: Amarillo National Bank, Amarillo Town Club, Cavender’s, The Donut Stop, “Doppler” Dave Oliver, Parker Boats & Motors, and State Farm Insurance. This year’s Best of Amarillo event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28. We are moving the main event to the larger North Exhibit Hall in the Amarillo Civic Center Complex. In order to accommodate our exhibits and attendees, we had to find larger space. Our highly successful “After-Party” is moving to the Heritage Room. This is the third year that we’ve expanded to two parties, and you’ll want to be sure to attend both of them. The time-honored Best of Amarillo event gives readers and fans the chance to sample cuisine from dozens of restaurants, listen to live music, and learn more about the businesses that are the best at what they do. Our “Superhero” theme this year is sure to be lots of fun, as the winners decorate their booths. We hope many of you will plan to dress up. en years is a long time to do much of anything, especially when it comes to dominating a particular Best of Amarillo category. But that’s exactly what our Best of Amarillo Hall of Fame recognizes: the businesses, restaurants, personalities and community institutions that have been voted to the top of a category for at least 10 years. That’s a big deal, especially for a competition that has only existed for the past 16 years. Some
of these winners have topped their category for 10 years straight – an even more impressive stat given the rapid pace of change in Amarillo and the rise in competition. So for 2017, we are honored to induct 11 new members into one of Amarillo’s most exclusive clubs. This year’s inductees include a sportscaster (Lee Baker), a chiropractor (Brock Lovett), a “secret” burger joint (Coyote Bluff), and a legendary restaurant that’s no secret at all (The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery). GOLF COURSE: Amarillo Country Club The area’s oldest golf course is also its newest, so to speak. Though Amarillo Country Club first opened in 1919, its storied course endured a complete overhaul and redesign a few years ago.
