Finnish artist Aila Snickars is a painter whose brilliantly colorful work evokes a modernist spirit and technique while also paying homage to the simple lines and forms of ancient figurative art. Working predominantly using acrylic and watercolor, Snickars has a fondness for large and colorful compositions that attempt to eliminate superfluous details to get at the essence of what she is depicting. This can most strongly be seen in her figurative work; she creates strong yet minimal lines to hint at the motion and elicits her subject’s emotions while letting the vibrant washes of color envelop the composition. Born in Finland, Snickars developed a fondness for painting at a young age while painting porcelains. She attended art schools in both Finland and Italy, and currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden where she is a full-time artist exhibiting work internationally. She is dedicated to finding her way in her art and looks to create a balance between her impulse to create while questioning provocation for her viewers.

My interest in the arts began as a teenager painting porcelains, but I quickly found my passion for oil painting. To further enhance my natural talent, I attended multiple art schools and workshops, including Huttunen’s art school in Kotka, Finland and Tore Hultctrantz and Erik Springfeldt’s art school in Italy. I have been an active artist for many years and create my work using oil, acrylic, and watercolors. I go through different phases within my work and find myself inspired by different periods. One body of work, I was heavily influenced by ancient Egypt and created many compositions that include different Egyptology figures. The Impressionist and Expressionist movements have motivated me to find my own way of being and have me more focused on the human body, modern shapes, and forms. I always try to negate the unnecessary clutter and focus on the core, communicating through simple lines and vibrant colors. My work is an interpretation of the feelings and questions each of us experiences throughout our lives.
