BILI ZILIC
Croatian-born, Australian-based artist Bili Zilic paints in the style of Pointillism. As such, Zilic’s paintings can take over a year to finish, requiring multiple layers of paint and areas of modulated and distinct color. He usually works on three to four pieces at a time, moving in between layers and ideas on his canvases of varied size. This process results in astounding textural depth, which guides the audience beyond the immediately obvious upon looking at Zilic’s canvases. His paintings provide a journey to the viewer, reflecting in his complexity the complexities of life.
Zilic is fundamentally inspired by the founder of Pointillism, Georges Seurat, and carries on the traditional Pointillist technique as initiated by Seurat. The themes and ideas Zilic paints come from his love for the people around him and the places in which he has lived or has visited; for example, he interpreted the cities of Australia into large, colorful cityscapes on canvases of massive size. Zilic has been painting with oil on canvas for over four decades, translating his multifaceted emotions and perceptions of the world around him into his visual feast of dots and color. Because his practice has remained the same since he began, his mastery of Pointillism is evident in each sprawling composition he creates.
BILI ZILIC ON
My work reflects the world around me, people and the environment, how I see them and how they impact me. It forms organically in a rain of color, layered with dots. I merge and meld the dots and embed images deep within and throughout to capture the complexities and joys of life. I paint primarily with oil on canvas to convey a palette that is vibrant and natural and reflects the qualities of nature and people. I draw inspiration from my life journey–a great deal of which has been in Australia–both through color and images. My paintings are intended to take you on a journey of discovery, some with intensity, while others with softer hues, and unclear lines.
