BING YANG
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
With series titled such as ‘Metamorphosis’ and ‘Karma’, Bing Yang’s paintings ask the big questions – and give equally complex answers. From the primordial soup of Op. 105 to Op. 120 and beyond, Yang’s illustrations are at once galactic and infinitesimal, both interstellar and minute. From the tops of mountains to the bottom of the ocean: mussels scallop the canvas of Under the Sea while a bright undergrowth of moss brandishes Youngster in his oil painting series; Yang’s paintings are brightly alive and vigorously dynamic in their movement, scope, form, and content. Though generally taking an abstract expressionist bend, Yang’s paintings are uniquely his own: a conglomerate of his sensorial experiences around the world.
Beginning as a schoolboy learning calligraphy in Taiwan, Yang’s painting career has blossomed and morphed over the years to include various colors, shapes, planes and even a variation of styles ranging from an almost calligraphic black and white to Kandinsky-esque synaesthesia. Indeed, Yang attributes his artistic practice to a reflection, seeing himself as a conduit, of the myriad experiences he takes in across geographic and cultural wonders, a lifetime he presents to the viewer in visual amalgamation.
Yang lives and works in New York.
BING YANG ON
When I am in my studio, with my tools and paints, I inhabit a strange sensorial space. My mind travels back to all the places I visited, as I evoke all the scents, colors, and sounds I experienced: Climbing mountains with Tibetan nuns; in the desert, on a camel’s back, letting the sand blow on my face; or on the Amazon, Nile, and Yangtze rivers, letting the rivers reflect on my feelings. I journey through Angkor Wat and Petra and embrace the ancient Silk Road. I get lost in the African Continent and climb the mountains of Patagonia, Colorado, and Bhutan’s Tiger’s Nest. I hear the notes of Portuguese fado and Spanish flamenco and revel in the dazzling scenographies of Japanese kabuki and the Peking Opera. Every sense and experience I conjure affects my work. Each connects with my ears, eyes, nose, tongue, and hands, leading me to my world.
