Ece Abay is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam, originally from Istanbul. She is skillful in her craft, earning a Master of Arts from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Art from Syracuse University. Her art expresses her deep understanding of human association within the world. The work is intimate, raw, and honest, and she strives to create a bridge between the audience and her art. She feels a great connection to ancestorship and ancient temples. Previously centered on themes exploring her Greek cultural roots, Abay’s most recent work is influenced by ancient Mesopotamia and our common human heritage.
In consideration of her work, Abay states, “Göbekli Tepe, Stonehenge, and Karahan Tepe are the first inspirations of many for the series where I connect my personal journey with our common heritage. All ancient temples serve the same purpose for all humanity, and therefore, they should be treated and perceived as connected regardless of their location or timeline.”
Recently, Abay had a solo exhibition in Amsterdam. She also participated in shows at Miart Gallery in London, the International Arts & Antique Fair in Istanbul, and the Venice Art Fair in Forlì, Italy. The exhibition Beyond Borders at Miart was featured in Luxury Splash of Art Magazine. In addition, she was awarded multiple honors and was featured in the publications Haberturk Hayat (TR) and Marie Claire (TR).
“We are the reflections of our ancestors on earth...” - Ece Abay
ECE ABAY ON Goddess of Liberty, 2023 Woodcut on canvasMy earlier works were themed around my own dreamscapes, which were reflections of my personal emotions and how I perceived the world around me. My biggest inspiration came from my heritage and culture through a personal journey. The Ancient Memories series describes the second chapter of the journey during which I share my experiences through the lens of our ancestors, who showed us how to connect with one another. As a result, I chose Ancient Temples to be the bridge between our heritage and future generations on enlightenment and finding our path in life to prosper in harmony. The series represents birth, growth, and maturity of consciousness; starting off from a personal level all the way up to embracing the uniqueness of individuals forming a singular conscience.
Göbeklitepe, Stonehenge, and Karahan Tepe are the primary inspirations for the series, as I connect my personal journey with our common heritage. All ancient temples serve the same purpose for all humanity. They should be treated and perceived as connected regardless of their location or timeline. If you look up to the sky and see how these temples align with the stars that show us the path, you will embrace all human beings as your own. We are the reflections of our ancestors on Earth.
