BELBRUNO

530 West 25th Street, New York, NY ED

Ed Belbruno’s Abstract Expressionist paintings project an alternate sense of reality, one which is not based solely on what is visible, but rather another reality that is created by allowing his subconscious to freely express itself. A former NASA scientist with a doctorate in mathematics, Belbruno’s art plays with concepts of time and dimension, microwave radiation from the Big Bang, alien landscapes, and night skies. Furthermore, his work inspired ideas for scientific discoveries and mathematical formulas. Belbruno sees art and science as working in tandem; balancing intuition, creativity, and logic. Approaching his work with the spirit of chaotic discovery, he constantly experiments with a variety of styles, explores alternative techniques, and introduces new narratives. Belbruno’s paintings search for beauty in the universe, harmony in the cosmos, and his feelings in the here and now.

Belbruno currently lives in New Jersey, where he balances his full-time art career with a position at Princeton University. He recently received Germany’s prestigious Humboldt Research Award for his achievements in mathematics and will spend a year at the University of Augsburg starting in the spring of 2018.

My paintings strive to project an alternate sense of reality, that which is unperceivable by the naked eye. In order to find this other reality, I allow my subconscious to freely express itself. This is reflected in my background as a mathematician and astrophysicist. My mathematics deals with chaotic motions, where motions move in unpredictable ways. The subconscious allows patterns to be seen in the chaos, but laws of logic need to be followed. However, when I create art, my mind is in a completely different mode driven by my subconscious. While painting, the subconscious is at work throughout the entirety of time needed to complete a painting.

My art has evolved significantly over the years, from natural recognizable elements to pure abstract expressionism and from bold, textured brush strokes to a subtle color palette. My latest work connects most strongly with who I am as an artist. Unlike my earlier work of intense color, this is done in mainly black, gray and white. The scenes show otherworldly landscapes and scenes with a sweeping apocalyptic beauty. Their desolation gives a sense of peaceful silence. This series grew out of the arrival of the pandemic in early 2020. The pieces have a sense of abstract expression, but viewers feel a deep connection to them as presenting a view of our world and times.
