Using high contrast, loud shapes, and bright colors to convey duality of meaning, French artist Fabrice Espiard’s pieces speak to mismatched realities and the multi-faceted experience of human life. The sharp corners and geometric shapes of his technicolor of Espoir cut across the visual plane, dividing space into shards of color and representing life’s possible trajectories. His Discovery curls around and in on itself, its two-toned nature demarcating a circularity in which one may delineate their nature from their true nature. Bright primary colors of his other works are painted and printed in layers mirroring the planes of the human psyche underpinning one’s persona. Espiard’s pieces communicate that things are not always as they seem, and by using bold shapes and colors the works transmit the variegated inner lives of human beings. Presenting the human experience in visual form, Espiard highlights the complexities and inconsistencies within each of us.
Foregrounding the inconsistencies of people as the character of many of his pieces, Espiard comes to his art following various careers including, but not limited to, long-haul trucking, farming, and owning a cleaning and disinfecting company for emergencies and disasters, such as fires, suicides, and accidents. Espiard’s feeling of having lived various lives informs his art practice and he uses many of his professional experiences as a lens through which he uniquely encounters and portrays the human condition.
FABRICE ESPIARD ONMy journey, both professional and personal, has given me the strange and tenacious impression of having had several lives; on a constant, insatiable quest for self-fulfillment. The emotional maturity I have attained on this journey and the lessons I have learned are imprinted in my art. My work exposes individual and collective dualities that often lead to complementarity, but rarely to balance: the versatility of our feelings and emotions, their scalability, and their inconstancy which frequently lead us to completely paradoxical behaviors. I explore the ambiguity of our emotional differences in our individuality and social behavior and the frequent mismatch between our dreams and our actions. I translate these ambivalences and oppositions through color, contrast, and light offering a mirror to my feelings, as experienced in various stages of my existence.
