Spanish artist Jesua Marian creates abstract-figurative works in the form of digitally manipulated photography. Informed by his degree in Psychopedagogy, Marian’s works handle the conscious and subconscious mind of his subjects and himself, as a creator. After being in a Coma for 57 days, Marian channels the intense dreams and visions that his mind experienced in that situation, giving his work a unique perspective on the power of the subconscious mind. Marian is from the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The artist’s training as a music teacher, computer programming technician and educational psychologist have provided him inspiration and insight for his work. Despite only being a practicing artist for two years, Marian has already notably exhibited his work in the Museum of the Government of the Canary Islands in 2019.

I take photographs of everything that seems to me to be interesting for my abstract-figurative work. You normally can see people on the photos. They may be doing an activity or I am just making a portrait. I have a Degree in Psychopedagogy, therefore I always question the conscious and subconscious minds. Once I have the source photography, I set my subconscious mind free to play with the different techniques I can employ with software. For me, the experimentation is the fun part. I can’t repeat a process or a piece, every one is unique in its creation. I believe that the final result is not only about what I am or my opinion about myself, it also has to do with what I perceive in other people, about their way of being, how they would like to be, how they could be or what they are afraid of being. I was previously in a coma for several months, which was an impactful experience on me and my work. What you are like while in a coma is different than dreaming, it is much more deeply involved in your subconscious, and you can’t wake up . For this reason, now I still spend more time on everything that involves the subconscious mind.
