John Mark Luke is a Louisianne born, Texas based artist and sculptor. In his own words, he is a “blue-collar” person, but his work is unquestionably sophisticated. His abstract sculptures pair organic materials such tree branches, plywood, and fence flats, with industrial materials like steel and found metal objects. Each piece explores how shape, volume, mass and scale interact, while also engaging contemplation on the beauty and juxtaposition of our built environment and the natural world. The artist gives new life to discarded objects, forgotten in scrapyards, lying idle in a junkyard, or fallen from a dying tree, and uses them artistically, to remind us that art is seeing beauty in what others reject.

INQUIRE NOW

I have always been attracted to the aesthetic nature of my environment and have found genuine fulfillment in creative endeavors. After various vocations, and while married with children, I gave college one more try earning a Graphic Design Degree and ultimately focusing on creating sculpture. After my 50th birthday, I built a six-foot tall, eight-legged, steampunk spider chair titled “Spiderpunk” winning the Best in Show award and my journey as a sculptor began. Drawn to the abstract and how shape, volume, mass, and scale interact with the environment, I create work not based on “what” it is, but rather “how” it is. By utilizing natural materials such as felled tree wood, rocks, and stone in combination with industrial materials, discarded materials gain new life. Preferring to exhibit outside of gallery walls and building on a larger scale, I create work for outdoor public art opportunities such as welded steel sculptures. At 59 years old, I consider myself a “young artist”. I feel there is so much more to learn, so much more to experience. I make room for the “child” inside and I welcome those opportunities that allow me to live a life of expectation, expression, and fulfillment.
