JUAN MURCIA
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
Exposed to the natural wonders of his native Colombia and the cultural treasures of Europe from an early age, Juan Murcia is no stranger to beauty. Formerly engaged in nature photography, he now captures the vibrancy of his city, Miami, highlighting the small overlooked details of our day-to-day lives.
His pictures are whirlpools of pulsating energy, encapsulating worlds of their own. The viewer is swept over into merry-go-rounds of azure ocean waves, sunny subtropical landscapes, or eye-popping graffiti. Other images take the form of planets suspended in a clear blue atmosphere, bursting with life. Overall, there is a pervasive feeling of upliftment and elation to his work. From a flat 180° view, Murcia transitioned to 360° photography, using a fisheye lens, to transcend our linear perception of reality and reveal dimensions previously concealed to the naked eye. In his oeuvre, he exposes the contrast between ugliness and beauty, by accentuating shapes, colors, lights, and shadows. Murcia’s photographs offer an invitation to expand our field of vision and acknowledge the inherent magic of our surroundings.
JUAN MURCIA ONAlthough I have traveled far and wide, I have found that there is beauty right where I am. Our eyes are designed to look in a linear field, with a 180 degree view, but when we change this perspective, we discover that the world is neither flat nor limited. When I began to filter reality through the lens of my newfound perception, I found colors, shapes, and shadows that made me rethink my surroundings, perceiving images as separate ecosystems, which enclosed a universe of their own. In my work I bring to light the contrast between ugliness and beauty, lights and shadows, shapes and figures, revealing the uniqueness of the city in which I live. My photography shows that our narrow human vision can be expanded to uncover new worlds within.
