In her bright, imaginative cityscapes, painter Linda Rosen captures the swirling, colorful world with joyful exuberance. Utilizing thick, black lines and vibrant planes of unmodulated color, Rosen depicts floating skyscrapers, busy streets, and idyllic houses with spirit and delight. Though the paintings appear to be part of an illustrative fantasy world, many of the works are actually real scenes from the American landscape including the Bronx and the Blue Ridge Mountains, among others. In her acrylic on canvas painting titled Dancing Buildings, Rosen depicts a series of tall structures that sway with movement and dynamism. A background of playful lines lends the work a dreamlike quality. Her painting Going to the Bronx captures the excitement of the ride into Manhattan’s historically rich outer borough. The architecture is simplified into triangles and rectangles, giving the landscape a cartoonish sensibility. Finally, Olympic Park is Rosen’s most abstract canvas, depicting the architecture and landscape as a jumbled swirl of violet, white, and yellow lines that dance wildly around the canvas.

When I paint, I get lost in it. The paint just flies; I become so involved, so immersed, that I wind up wearing a good amount of it. I am able to let my emotions out with each brush stroke, and there is no right or wrong. I have always been interested in women’s rights. In the past I have only featured women in my artwork, though now the work I do is more varied; nevertheless, it gives me great joy. The playful, spirited nature of my newer work allows me to create my own worlds. Painting enriches me to such an extent that, when I paint, I forget about the ugliness that has become our country and in the world.
