LLIAM GREGUEZ
Photographer Lliam Greguez is inspired by Earth’s most basic elements, finding complex beauty in ice, air, and water. As a professional creative art therapist, Greguez prioritizes the healing and clarifying capabilities that artwork can have on the audience and artist alike. Based in New York City the artist worked in local hospitals before Covid, using music to improve children’s emotional, physical, and mental health.
Greguez celebrates wonder and appreciation for Earth in his yearly mountain hikes, describing his work as ‘a micro documentary’ of Earth’s ice which is being affected by climate change. From afar his artworks look abstract as though the images were painted or drawn, but they are in fact photographs depicting observations of nature particularly around the Catskill Mountains. Greguez uses macro-photography to capture details of textures and scenes such as thickened ice and frozen flora. Something as simple as the interaction of water and temperature provides inspiration for Greguez who predominantly prints the artwork using sublimated metal. He captures moments of ever changing states where air, liquid, and solid morph between themselves.

As an organism of vibration, I love how my eyes and ears detect subtle energies. By photographing mountain ice, I explore nature’s visual energy using a macro lens to collect momentary states of water in winter as found objects. Light and its colors play with freezing hydrogen bonds and oxygen bubblings to produce interesting scenes, which sometimes look abstract for all their reality. The images portray a four-dimensional beauty of frozen water where there is surface texture, inner depth, substance beyond and reflection. These findings encourage my imagination, an effect which the photos can inspire.
This is nature’s pure water, constantly moving and fresh off the bones of the mountain. It is chemical, biological and sensorial magic. Ice develops as a process that fluctuates in and out of being solid, where sculptures and sketches grow and are erased. Splashes, wind and temperature act as paintbrushes. Hiking through the chilled woods as I photograph is a pleasure in itself, and finding such hidden moments of ever-evolving designs magnifies the wonder of being surrounded by Earth’s artistry and my ability to appreciate it.
