Madina Pavlyuk’s surreal cityscapes and logographic inscriptions are living testimonies of the distant past. Based in the city of Krasnodar, in southern Russia, Pavlyuk has had a fascination for the ancient since she was little. The subjects of her paintings are drawn from frequent visits to archeological sites in Egypt, Italy, and Turkey as well as cave art in Crimea or local architecture. “I like to travel to places that contain the history and memory of many generations,” she explains. “I don’t want people to forget about their past, their roots. After all, it is an integral part of us. Humanity has come a long way to make us what we are now.” Imagining life as it once was, Pavlyuk offers oniric scenes of quiet Medieval towns, Boschesque battlegrounds, and primitive engravings. Oftentimes, the symbols she uses are uniquely her own, as if to challenge the viewer to decipher the mystery of time. Pavlyuk’s initiation into the art world occurred with a painting, which she auspiciously called “The Magic Door.” The piece was displayed at the allRussian exhibition of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation. After earning a degree in economics, she trained under acclaimed Russian painter Sergei Vorzhev, who became her mentor. Pavlyuk exhibited all over Russia, most notably at The Kovalenko Art Museum, as well as London, and was featured in numerous local publications. She runs Paralleli, a creative project founded with fellow artist Yulia Kudina. Together, they aspire to revive the techniques of the Old Masters through contemporary art.

I am captivated by the archaic. Our past is full of mysteries and secrets that inspire and excite. Often in my work I draw inspiration from cave paintings. Primitive art is simple, with clear contours and images. There are no superfluous elements nor embellishments in it, which fascinates me. Another favorite theme of mine are cityscapes. I create wholly or partially fictional cities, houses, residents with their own history and destiny. The walls of ancient buildings are a living record of what has happened in the past and by listening to their stories, I imagine what life was like many centuries ago. Ultimately, each of my paintings is a monologue through time and space, containing many hidden sacred symbols that excite the imagination and encourage self-reflection.
