Manolo Ferrer, Spanish-born and currently residing in Andorra, is an artist who has been working in the world of stained glass for 15 years. Utilizing the leaded and Tiffany techniques in his pieces, Ferrer, a master of the light box, first paints the intended picture in watercolor and then translates the design using both transparent and colored glass. He is mostly inspired by nature, often bringing paints with him on runs so that he may document any landscapes of note that he encounters. When he transfers his work to glass, though, the paper becomes obsolete. Ferrer’s pieces are elegant, and he strives to use light, color, and tone to make his glass appear as naturalistic and three dimensional as possible. And as a deeply emotional person, he aims for his consumers to briefly remove themselves from reality, from the horrors that face our modern world, and to imagine that they are experiencing the world of his glass designs, to completely submerge themselves in the sensual beauty of what the earth has to offer.

I am a very emotional and sentimental person; I allow my emotions to rise when creating which I then reflect in my work. I am endlessly inspired by nature; wherever I go, I carry a small watercolor kit and if I see a landscape, a tree, a lake, etc., I create a preliminary painting to later recreate in glass. For years, traditional painting has not interested me and I only reference my preliminary works as a model for my glasswork. The canvas becomes obsolete once my work is done. I want to convey what is original, true, and transparent. I observe reality and I pretend that my viewer imagines, for a moment, that they too are inside a lightbox. That they contemplate the landscape covered with trees, flowers, lakes and blue skies; that they imagine that they are present breathing pure air, feeling the smell of the pines and flowers. I aim to recreate memories of life. By incorporating elements of both realism and nature allows me to transmit movement into my compositions and capture my audience’s attention.
