NICOLE TANG
530 West 25th Street, New York, NY
Trinidadian painter Nicole Tang merges Caribbean and Chinese cultures in exquisite ink and mixed media miniatures. Initially, Tang was inspired by the vibrant colors of the Caribbean flora and fauna as well as the liveliness of the people and culture. In recent years, she has drifted away from her original aesthetic drawing closer to themes evoking her Chinese heritage. Her small ink and pastel paintings are evocative of Asian mountainous or marine landscapes, although not referring to any specific location. Steeped in hues of calming blue, they emit an aura of tranquility. While always retaining a feeling of meditative calm, some works are more existential in nature, showing lonely figures deep in thought (To Think or Not to Think; Alone in My World) or striving for liberation from the world and themselves (Earth and Water). “The images in my paintings enhance the idea of reflective thinking in solitude, a daydream-like state or magical realm within the landscape,” the artist explains. “They address social issues of the self, such as finding oneself, knowing oneself, and the journey to self achieved through meditation and solitude.”
Tang received a BA in Visual Arts from The University of the West Indies. She exhibited locally and internationally, namely at the National Museum & Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago, The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. She taught art in schools and at an orphanage and participated in various creative projects, including mural painting and volunteer work for the Autism Society of Trinidad and Tobago. Tang moved to France-first in Paris then Nice- to pursue her art career and now resides in Rome Italy.
My artistic process is very dynamic and playful, and one in which I focus on liberation and meditation. My Chinese ink paintings draw a parallel between the flow of the ink to the flow of life. Ink moves beautifully, in its interactions with water and paper. I like to let it circulate naturally across the surface and exert control when I feel it is needed. My work addresses art as a form of therapy and meditation, whereby I create contemplative and soothing landscapes with overlays of illustrations and repeated motifs. It brings an awareness of self in one’s environment and moves the viewer to a pensive state. For
