U.S. based artist, Pauline Rakis paints abstract and figurative artworks. Rakis implements an intuitive and gestural painting style while tackling traditional themes such as landscapes and still lives. She works with acrylic paint and manipulates the media to create various textures, consistencies, and marks. Her collage pieces include acrylic paint and colored tissue. She uses vinegar and rusted items to alter the coloration and texture of the media in her work and has experimented with other materials as well. Her paintings are brightly colored and involve brushstrokes and dripping. The abstract paintings are meant to ignite discussions for viewers and are not created with just one meaning in mind. Rakis is a member of several art organizations such as Montgomery Art Association, Olney Art Association, Art League of Ocean City, Maryland, Baltimore WaterColor Society, and Women’s Caucus for the Arts. Her artwork is influenced by impressionist painters and traveling. Rakis uses a developed impressionist mark-making style to create both her representational and abstract paintings. She enjoys uncovering imagery and seeing how a painting evolves during her artistic process.

My paintings have an element of discovery. I may have an idea when I start working, but the painting can often take a different direction. The laying down of shapes and colors often brings out an unexpected image that can be developed further. A traditional theme or central image emerges such as a landscape, still life, seascape or even an abstraction. The most exciting part is the unveiling of this imagery as I continue to work on each piece. Some of my works are representational while others are impressionistic. Non- objective, abstracts are the most freeing. They are also when I am most creative because they allow me to be inventive - calling on my intuition rather than relying on a specific subject. Following an established “art rule” is often restrictive. Acrylic paints are my preferred medium because of their flexibility. They can mimic watercolors with their fluidity or oil paint if applied thickly. Acrylics are easily manipulated which can add interesting texture to the piece as well. For my collages, the fluid nature of acrylic paint is instrumental in coloring art tissue. Another method of tinting the tissue is to use rusted items such as washers, nails and cans that have been sprayed with white vinegar. After spraying, the items are placed on the tissue and allowed to drip onto the paper creating a variety of interesting shapes and colors. These techniques invite the viewer to engage with the work differently - to analyze, to ask questions. Communicating with the art and igniting discussion is the ultimate goal of my work and art in general.
