Xiao Faria daCunha is a Chinese painter based in Kansas City, Missouri. Inspired by traditional Chinese ink illustration and Western painting styles, she works in both watercolor and acrylic to produce art that explores, as well as analyzes humans and their relationships with themselves, each other, nature, and the world at large. Having struggled with mental health, Faria daCunha evokes and harnesses ancient Eastern and Buddhist symbols and mythologies to acknowledge universal truths about life—love, pain, and everything in between—so that her viewers may find comfort in whatever their situation might be and feel that they can successfully navigate it. Faria daCunha’s medium is dependent on the narrative her work aims to present. When she paints in watercolor, she is depicting a state of Zen, a state of poetic, romantic inner peace; when she uses acrylic, she is focusing on an internalization of some human conflict. Faria DaCunha combines her varied artistic styles with the lessons she has learned through both her culture and personal experience to help others realize that it is okay to not be okay.

My artwork explores the most natural things of the human being: our relationship with the world, nature, each other; our diverse emotions; the difficulties we face and overcome; the growth we gain after suffering. I often refer to eastern and Buddhist symbols, as well as ancient mythologies; my paintings interpret the universal subjects such as love, peace and the challenges in life with a hint of Asian philosophies. My style is a combination of traditional Chinese ink illustration and Western master’s painting styles, yet my work all conveys a consistent subject: to acknowledge the many beings and happenings in life, yet letting go at the same time so each can focus on his or her own goal in life. As an immigrant in America, my multicultural background has allowed me to see things differently, and also put me through many hardships regarding coming to terms with life and finding out what a legacy means for myself. It is my goal to use my artistic skills to share the lessons I’ve learned from my culture and my journey of life with others. To explain the unexplainable, and to touch the untouchable subjects so there could be a little more light, joy, clarity, and peace in my audience’s world.
