Kuhn upgrades farm and amenity hedge cutter range Kuhn Farm Machinery has added to Agri-Longer Gll to its range of hedge and grass cutting equipment

P

ositioned as a compact ‘go-anywhere’ farmerowned and amenity sector machine, the AgriLonger GII has a straight arm format with the main boom structure welded from ultra-high strength steel to guarantee the best flexibility-to-robustness ratio.

It is available in two models offering a horizontal reach of 4.3m (4345 ML) or 4.8m (4845 ML).

In addition to the new feature of pendulum link mechanical safety, the key differences between the GII models and earlier AgriLonger machines include increased hydraulic rotor circuit power (up from

34hp to 40hp) and electric joystick control as standard.

As with earlier models, the Agri-Longer GII hedge cutters have a 1.2m direct drive flail head with 220-degree flail head rotation. The cutting head, which can work directly behind the tractor wheel, has a removable wear plate and a reversible rotor that can be turned around to optimise lug wear. The rotor has 24 boot flails mounted on 12mm shackles.

Following last month’s announcement that John Deere dealer Netherton Tractors Ltd is to establish a new outlet

ollowing last month’s announcement that John Deere dealer Netherton Tractors Ltd is to establish a new agricultural and homeowner equipment outlet in the Perth and Kinross area, a further expansion of the dealership’s territory is now being planned.

As of November 1, 2020, the dealership will also operate from two new outlets in Turriff, Aberdeenshire and Nairn, Highland, replacing HRN Tractors Ltd in that region. This will bring the total number of Netherton group branches to five, including the two established businesses at Forfar in Angus and Glenrothes in Fife.

esistant ‘super rats’ are breeding in the UK and more information is needed to reduce their numbers. A new survey will compile data to establish the extent to which resistance is understood and what methods farmers are using to control rodent infestations.

Research published by the University of Reading Vertebrate Pests Unit (VPU) suggests that resistance is spreading due to the use of anticoagulants

containing the actives bromadiolone and difenacoum. By using products that are ineffective on resistant rodents, farmers are only killing rodents that have no resistance.

This is leaving resistant rodents to breed with each other, which is causing numbers to increase rapidly.

The survey is being supported

by BASF to raise awareness of resistance and compile fresh data about the use of rodenticides on farms

throughout the UK. “We believe it is important that the issue of resistance is kept fresh in the minds of farmers.

Using some rodenticides in certain areas of the country could be increasing the number of resistant rodents and causing farmers to use rodenticides that are ineffective and potentially harmful to non-target species,” says pest control specialist Helen Ainsworth, from BASF. The survey is available to complete online until September 30th 2020.

Azelis animal nutrition: How to mitigate heat stress in cattle

Farmers struggling to manage persistent digestive disturbances amongst their calves now to access to break-through formula

W

ith temperatures forecast to rise above 25°C, cattle producers should be prepared to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on their beef and dairy animals.

“Cattle are fairly comfortable when the ambient temperature is between 15°C and 25°C over the summer months but if the thermometer rises significantly, production performance will start to suffer,” warns Jacob Lakin from Azelis Animal Nutrition.

“This is because both a milk production and growing beef animal will start to divert energy away from production performance towards keeping cool. You’ll notice if a cow is struggling during a summer heatwave because she will start to salivate heavily and pant. These are both mechanisms to increase the amount of body heat lost via evaporation.”

He says that acidosis is an associated risk too. “This is because the cow will have a preference for less fibrous feed materials and concentrates, to decrease its rumination. Consequently, rumen buffering capacity falls and acidosis can be triggered.”

Mr Lakin says two of the most effective, practical mitigation measures during a hot spell are to make sure both housed and grazing cattle have access to a constant supply of fresh water. You can also introduce a rumen buffer such as sodium bicarbonate to the available ration.

MAZONE and AGRAVIS start a joint agricultural pilot project, Controlled Row Farming (CRF) Row-based cultivation focusing particularly on biodiversity In collaboration with AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG and SCHMOTZER Hacktechnik, AMAZONEN-WERKE will start new long-term field trials in 2020. Entitled "Controlled Row Farming" (CRF), a completely new arable farming system will be introduced, in which each crop cultivation measure takes place in relation to a fixed row.

The vision of the CRF agroecological farming system consists in the needs-based use of resources to generate reasonable yields and profits together with the maximum contribution to biodiversity.

The aim is to actively promote biodiversity and achieve sustainable agricultural returns at the same time. Both goals should not only be met but ideally also support each other.

All crop plants are grown at a row spacing of 50 cm in the CRF concept, whereby cereals are sown in double rows. ​

Depending on the crop rotation, the row can be offset by 25 cm, in order, for example, to make use of the agronomical effect of the 12 | AgriNews

preceding undersown crop.

Sowing is normally carried out in combination with roworiented fertilisation. Plant protection is primarily applied row-specifically by means of band application on the row and via Dropleg systems at later growth stages. Each pass is always carried out with highprecision track guidance via RTK-GPS and camera control.

Hoeing technology is used for mechanical weed control in combination with row-specific plant protection, targeted fertiliser application and sowing of companion plants between the rows.

These companion plants – without direct contact with fertiliser and plant protection agents – make a positive contribution to the phytosanitary support of the main crop as well as soil fertility and biodiversity.

Depending on the crop and weather conditions, these companion plants are actively managed, in order to ensure the crop is harvested.

Two different intensities will be compared in the CRF trials: One variant will put the emphasis on the maximum yield with limited competition from companion plants. The second variant will focus on biodiversity with reduced intensity of fertiliser and plant protection measures. The two

CRF variants will be compared with two intensity levels of usual soil management.

The 10 ha test area at Amazone’s Wambergen test centre is located in the direct vicinity of the main Amazone factory in Hasbergen-Gaste.

The six-year crop rotation with cereals and maize is typical for the region. It consists of the establishment of rape and pulses as well as intensive catch crop cultivation in accordance with the principles of sustainability.

A good basis for an intense exchange of experience with the practitioners will be established with the simultaneous cultivation of four crops in four variants on one area.

The agricultural experts and design engineers at AMAZONEN-WERKE and SCHMOTZER Hacktechnik will develop and test new technologies and tools in the trials. The arable farming advisers at AGRAVIS will provide their expertise to help select the right varieties and inputs for the CRF system. The experts at AGRAVIS Digital GmbH and AGRAVIS Technik will also provide support in the selection of new methods and technologies.

H Agro has extended its 0% finance scheme on its range of Topcon automatic steering and precision guidance systems.

The 0% finance deal is available on a selection of Topcon equipment including the X-series range of implement control consoles, the AES35 electronic steering wheel and AGI-4 receiver, as well as LH Agro’s nationwide RTK subscription service.

Building a benchmark for dairy technicians

Hartpury College offers Category 2, an introduction to best practice that sees its participants accredited with the title Dairy Technician. “We include guest speakers from the industry to demonstrate the importance of accuracy and attention to detail,” says Hartpury tutor, Ian Coleman.

There are already participants from all over the UK, Ireland, and we even have one joining us from Italy,” he adds. Reaseheath College provides Category 3, for technicians seeking an advanced accreditation that is recognised by The Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE).

Continue reading to learn about natural and sustainable ways that you can care for your lawn.​ Step 1: Strengthen yo​ur grass​ roots Like all plants, the health of your lawn starts at its roots, which is why it's extremely important to nourish and care for the soil they are in. The easiest way to tell the health of your roots is by looking at the soil and its pH level, or its measure of acidity or alkalinity.

Different plants prefer soils with varying pH levels, which is why it's important to learn where your grass stands.

For example, dandelions prefer a pH level of 7.5, which is mostly neutral. Most grass thrives with a soil pH of 6.5 to 7.0, which is in the slightly acidic to neutral range.

Conducting a soil test for your pH level can be done on your own with a testing kit from a gardening store. Test your soil by taking three to five soil samples from about four to six inches below the soil surface in different

areas of your lawn. Remove the grass so you're left with nothing but soil. Mix the dirt together and spread around on a disposable surface so it can dry out over a 24-hour period and test according to the instructions of your kit.

Improve your Soil Quality If the soil is too acidic (pH 0 – 6), add organic options like wood ash to your soil. It may take several applications over a few years to take effect, but it will put your roots on a track to becoming healthier.​ If the soil is too basic (pH 8 – 14), add sphagnum peat to your lawn. Just be aware that it may require some tilling to fully incorporate the sphagnum peat into the soil and for it to take effect. Another option is to add fine mulch and compost to your lawn.

Step 2: Growing Healthy Grass with Organic Lawn Fertilizers The best natural fertilizer for your grass is the mulch, or grass itself. The grass clippings you make each time you mow contain rich nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

When grass is mulched into tiny clippings, microorganisms living on the soil bed break down the mulch and release those nutrients back into the soil.

NSTS: National Sprayer Testing Scheme

Ian Forman: Restrictions are now easing after non-compliance during lockdown. Most NSTS test centres have now started retesting

T

he last 3 months have been challenging for everyone and of course this has included sprayer testing during this period. Fortunately for farmers the relaxation of Red Tractor and Scottish Quality Crops (SQC) requirements where non-compliances have been applied has been a great help.

The easing has meant that if a non-compliance was issued during lockdown, because equipment testing, along with other services, rely on third party services the 28-day period was extended until such time that normal services can be resumed.

For Red Tractor members it is a

little unclear how long this extension will be granted for but for members of SQC there is no requirement for NSTS testing until the end of the year, but any outstanding testing has to be done by 1st March 2021.

We have advised everyone to make use of the operator check sheet, available on the NSTS website, www.nsts.org. uk , which has recently been updated and now includes space to record your nozzle output and forward speed checks, for quality assurance purposes as proof of calibration.

At the time of writing this article we are moving forward as regards restrictions imposed by

coronavirus. Many Test Centres have started testing again, and many farmers are happy for outside staff to come onto their premises. This means that testing has gradually resumed again, but don’t forget that Red Tractor have not issued a statement requiring tests to be carried out yet so if you have had a 28-day non-compliance issued but would rather wait until you feel safe then hold off for now. H

arvesting an area of cereal crop for fermented wholecrop silage could provide a lifeline for keeping cattle fed this winter in areas where spring drought has left grass silage clamps depleted, says Volac livestock specialist, Ken Stroud.

Although there are still opportunities to boost flagging clamps with further grass silage cuts, grass has typically done the majority of its growing by the time we get through June, says Mr Stroud.

Assessing grass silage stocks in mid-summer therefore fits perfectly with deciding whether to harvest some cereals for wholecrop, he adds.

“As well as maximising the yield and quality from remaining grass cuts, making some wholecrop could be an excellent top-up for livestock farmers facing grass shortfalls this season,” says Mr Stroud.

“Wholecrop winter wheat can yield 12-15 tonnes of dry matter (DM) per hectare – which is more

than three cuts of grass in a dry season. Spring barley is another option for wholecrop. Although it is likely to be lower-yielding, a lot of it has been planted this year. If you aren’t growing cereals, maybe look into buying a standing crop.”

As with any silage, achieving maximum feed value from wholecrop demands effective preservation, says Mr Stroud.

Many farmers preserve it by fermentation, he says, because this is a low cost and straightforward method.

will increase yield and starch content but reduce digestibility, and once cereal DM reaches 45% it can increase rapidly during hot weather by 2% a day.”

For the best preservation, Mr Stroud says as well as taking steps to aid the fermentation, it is vital to remember that, as a fairly dry and fibrous forage, wholecrop is highly prone to losses from heating. This is caused by yeast and mould growth, which is triggered by the presence of air.

“Although fermented wholecrop can be made at crop dry matters ranging from 30-60%, cutting at 45-50% DM gives a good balance between providing moisture and sugars for fermentation and a good starch content in the cereal grain,” says Mr Stroud. “Starch content can be as high as 35%.

Good consolidation to remove air from clamps is therefore imperative, he says. Rather than filling clamps in six inch layers before rolling, as typically recommended for grass silage, he advises just four inch layers to aid consolidation. The additive used also needs to inhibit yeast and mould growth as well as targeting improved fermentation, he stresses.

“Typically, this 45-50% DM level occurs as grain moves from the soft to hard ‘cheese’ stage but with no ‘milk’ detectable. Be careful not to overshoot this.

Harvesting at higher dry matters

“Ecocool, for example, contains two strains of beneficial bacteria designed to tackle both of these issues. Treating isn’t expensive compared with a clamp of good silage,” he adds.

Grasshopper: “A very reliable, well-built machine�

Ian Wells reviews the Grasshopper 321D after purchasing one on behalf of St. Neots Town Council

A

fter taking grass cutting in-house, in 2007, St Neots Town Council needed a manoeuvrable, rugged machine to cut grass in its cemeteries, church yards and on its village greens. The Grasshopper Zero turn was the answer.

SNTC purchased a Grasshopper 321D, with a 52-inch mulching deck and found it to be a wonderful ride-on that was quick and fit in to the smallest of gaps; most importantly, the mulch kit gave a great finish.

We purchased a second 321D in 2014 and a 325D, with a 52-inch DX deck, in 2016; the 325D was 26 | AgriNews

purchased primarily for verge cutting work.

Thanks to the manoeuvrability of the Grasshopper, using these two machines on the verges, has easily halved the time it takes to complete the round, by comparison using our out-front deck machines.

The 325D is a good all-round machine, fine grass cuts really well and longer areas are no match for its cutting capabilities; the fourth blade throws the arisings out the rear, meaning the deck never clogs up and still leaves a great finish.

Maintenance-wise, the Grasshopper only has five

grease points, all of which are very easy to locate; this means daily checks and maintenance are a breeze.

Then he presents concepts to help poultry farmers, developers and the wider poultry industry to describe what is out there to help improve bird welfare in conjunction with improving productivity.

James Smaldon is a thirdgeneration poultry farmer from North Devon. He is a Nuffield Scholar and his report into the relationship between poultry farming and new technology has just been published.

Technology is playing a growing role on poultry farms and in the whole poultry supply chain. Smaldon argues this is not always because the technology is wanted, but because it is needed, due to a shortage of skilled people to work on poultry farms.

But Smaldon wants to know what the costs are. “What happens with bird welfare when we increase the level of technology on our poultry farms and what strategies are there to minimise any reduction in their welfare?” he asks.

Asleep at the wheel “There have been instances where Tesla drivers have been seen sleeping whilst driving, and we cannot allow an analogous experience to happen within poultry farms,” 30 | AgriNews

“The symbioses between technology and farming have always been at the forefront of my mind,” Smaldon writes.

He describes working with a member of the farm team, Hazel, who has worked with his family since before his birth. “She is a stockperson to the core, but hates computers,” Smaldon writes.

“She believes that computers can provide a lot of benefit to farms, but that it makes workers lethargic and lessens the stockmanship ability of inexperienced people.”

This is the crux of the issue Smaldon explores in this report. “I am an advocate of technology on our farms,” he says. “I can see how

technology may result in productivity improvements both inside and outside the poultry sheds, but the main implication of such a technological step-up is that the stockmanship may well decrease and so counterbalance any perceived automation benefits.”

What is good welfare?

Bird welfare can be optimised through caring stockpeople; high quality inputs of feed and water; a housing environment designed to encourage play and provide access to the outdoors; and for the genetics of the bird to be optimised, such that the bird is willing to express their natural behaviours, Smaldon writes.

A huge range of equipment is used within UK poultry farms: for example, within the broiler breeder sector, there are farms with individual thermostats beneath individual fans, which turn the fan on when a specific temperature is reached: whereas other farms use advanced climate computers to incorporate as many sensors as possible to form a model of the poultry shed.

Experiences from around the world At the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, Smaldon met Dr Martin Zuidhof who

has been working to provide individual feeding to chickens.

It is a simple concept that has taken years to develop into a fully-functioning project.

With Dr Zuidhof’s chicken coop, a bird walks up the ramp to the first of two compartments, where it’s weighed and, if the bird is already at target weight, they are gently ejected. If they’re under the target weight, the bird is allowed into the second compartment, where they’re rewarded with some feed.

Birds are able to request feed as many times during the day as they want, but once they’ve hit the target weight, there’ll be no more feed available.

With this precision feeding system, flock uniformity dramatically increases for broiler breeders; where conventional feeding systems produce around 55% uniformity at 22 weeks old, precision feeding allows for 100% uniformity. They have also seen fertility increase by nearly 4%; gut health improvements since each bird feeds between 5 and 10 times during the day as opposed to conventionally feeding birds once a day; and welfare improvements as individual birds are able to feed when they wish to and so there is less competition and stress for the available feed.

Lessons from Cobb Siloam Springs, Arkansas, is the global headquarters of one of the largest poultry producers in the US and one of the largest broiler breed companies in the world. This

is no small coincidence, as Cobb Vantress is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods. Smaldon spent a few days with Roy Mutimer, the head of operations at Cobb (since his visit, Roy Mutimer has become managing director of Cobb Europe).

its breeding programme; the pure line birds have RFIDs, and automatic reviews of grandparent genetic profiles are performed to ensure correct parents (before genomics, they had a 5% parentage error rate which is now down to 0.1%).

Smaldon and Mutimer discussed how Cobb is using increasing levels of technology to help manage its research programme. The reality is that computer systems in poultry units are already very sophisticated, but most have relatively poor user interface design, writes Smaldon.

Teun and Smaldon spoke for an afternoon about the intricacies and nuances of layer breeding. “I had no idea that the genetic potential of a chicken is more than 10,000 eggs,” says Smaldon. “ Hendrix are finding that the best producing hens can lay 575 eggs in 576 days, and are expecting an additional week of production per year of development.”

“An example given to me was that when a member of the Cobb technical team travels to a farm to help them with their flock, this mostly involves training the farm staff on how to use the systems they already have, not to implement anything new. The people managing the birds need to be able to understand and utilise the systems at their disposal.

The next generation will take to these systems much more easily than current farm staff; as they have been immersed in a world of tablets and smartphones they will come to see the technology as a prerequisite, not a perk.”

Maximising genetic potential Teun van der Braak is a product manager at Hendrix Genetics in Boxmeer. Smaldon met him during his visit to the Netherlands in early 2020.

The benefits It’s clear there are massive benefits to productivity from technology. However, there are pitfalls. “Technology does not care,” writes Smaldon.

“Technology does not feel empathy. Technology does not ‘think on its feet’. However, technology also doesn’t come to work angry, does not fall ill and does not make silly mistakes.” This means the link between human and animal is necessary and absolute.

“My findings showed that both precision and autonomous technology can provide benefits to the poultry industry, with a variety of robots, computer systems and revolutionary systems nearing commercial viability,” he says.

he 20-second ad, made by 2S films Ltd, features a typical RSPCA Assured indoor chicken farm, which requires birds to be a slower growing breed, to have enrichment objects like straw bales, and natural light.

The ad will air until 31 July on Channel 4, More 4, Eden and HGTV and on All4 video-on-demand service until 2 August. It will also be shown on Sky, until 9 August, via its Adsmart service which uses Clubcard data to target Tesco’s customers. A version of the ad will also be hosted on YouTube.

RSPCA Assured hopes the new ad will encourage people who choose to eat chicken, to only buy RSPCA Assured labelled products.

Xenia Kingsley, the charity’s marketing manager, comments: “There are no gimmicks or complicated messages. It simply shows healthy, active, well cared for birds on a typical RSPCA Assured indoor farm, with a clear call to choose RSPCA Assured if you care about chicken welfare.”

There are currently 31 RSPCA Assured certified indoor chicken farms in the UK and 157 free range.

These farms have to meet

hundreds of mandatory standards to qualify for the charity’s approval. They receive annual assessments

by RSPCA Assured’s own specially-trained assessors and are also subject to unannounced spot checks by the RSPCA’s farm livestock officers.

RSPCA Assured chicken is available in Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury’s, as well as Tesco.

Animal by-product processing facility underway in Cheshire

SecAnim has said it is developing a Category 1 animal by-product processing facility at its renewable energy and recycling site in Widnes, Cheshire.

ecAnim has said it is developing a Category 1 animal byproduct processing facility at its renewable energy and recycling site in Widnes, Cheshire. The world-first operation completes a twostage site regeneration plan, supported by a capital investment of more than £15 million.

Set to be commissioned in October 2020, the Shepherdson High Efficiency Plant (SHEP) will turn raw material into high-quality tallow and meat and bone meal. The tallow will be used as a core ingredient for the production of biodiesel, by companies such as SecAnim’s sister company ecoMotion, while the meat and bone meal will provide fuel for the site’s combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plant.

At the heart of the SHEP development is a highly advanced primary processing plant, which harnesses the latest advancements in lowtemperature drying technology to maximise operational efficiencies. Designed to minimise environmental impact, the facility will use significantly less energy than the operation it replaces and is powered entirely by renewable electricity

generated through the Category 1 animal by-product (ABP) rendering process. The plant harnesses state-of-theart automation and health and safety processes (including gas detection and operator protection measures), while also setting the standards in odour elimination technology.

Collectively, the plants will also provide a recycling outlet for the disposal of bioliquids, as well as producing two arable fertilisers (Kalfos, a dry phosphate product; and ReGrow, a PAS110 liquid biofertiliser) – a completely integrated, closed-loop solution for the UK’s food supply chain.

Operating alongside the site’s existing ReFood anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, SARVAL Category 3 rendering facility and bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) power plant, the SHEP development will complete the Widnes site’s pioneering operations, which will collectively provide the world’s first fully-integrated solution for protein manufacturing, biomass recycling and renewable energy production – harnessing next-generation technologies to maximise the value in by-products arising from across the food chain.

Philip Simpson, commercial director at SARIA – parent company of SecAnim, SARVAL and ReFood, said: “Our Widnes operation has provided safe and secure animal by-product processing services since the 1930s.

The site has long-since featured in the UK National Animal Disease Control and Eradication plans.

Heat required for the SHEP’s operations will be provided by the on-site biomass CHP plant, supported by biomethane from the ReFood AD plant. Effluent will be treated on-site, in line with the latest environmental standards, while the CHP plant will also be used to eliminate odours from the SHEP facility, rather than relying on chemical treatment.

“We are delighted to unveil the culmination of our redevelopment programme, which creates a completely unique, fully-integrated, stateof-the-art solution for byproducts arising from the food chain and represents a total recent SARIA investment at Widnes of almost £50 million.

Forming an integrated unit together with the SARVAL, and ReFood plants, as well as the BFB, the SHEP facility sets the standards in capability, efficiency and sustainability – no other single operation in the UK can offer similar facilities or deliver similar benefits.”

Farewell from Jim after decade of success at JCB academy

The man who has steered the UK’s first ever engineering academy to success over its decade today retired - with tributes ringing in his ears

im Wade became the first Principal of the JCB Academy in 2009, implementing the vision of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford to create a school dedicated to producing the engineers and business leaders of the future. When he joined, building work at the £22 million school in Rocester, Staffordshire, was only just getting under way.

The following year, he was on hand to welcome the first 120 students through the doors of a unique establishment, which has gone on to be recognised nationally for its achievements.

Today Jim retired having played a major role in the education of around 2,500 young people at an academy which has been oversubscribed every single year since it opened in a Grade II listed Arkwright Mill dating from 1781.

The JCB Academy was the brainchild of Lord Bamford, who in his 45 years as Chairman of JCB, has championed the cause of British manufacturing. In the years before the Academy opened, he voiced fears over the decline in manufacturing and the shortage of young people with engineering skills emerging from the education system.

Jim said: “The most satisfying aspect of the past decade is that so many of our learners have gone on to fulfil roles in engineering leadership, which is exactly what we set out to achieve with the JCB Academy. They have already begun to make an impression on the world, whether that is by starting their own company, going to work for

ichael is one of Britain's most acclaimed chefs having held two Michelin stars for 18 years.

Michael has cooked in 10 Downing Street for the Prime Minister, received an MBE in 2006 for services to the hospitality industry and was awarded AA Chef’s Chef of the Year in 2007.

His new Isuzu has been fitted using a range of genuine Isuzu accessories with a slight twist opting for a dark exterior look deleting all of the chrome for a gloss black finish, which works incredibly well with the Splash white exterior paint giving it the perfect contrast. To finish the look gloss back 19” centurion alloy wheels were fitted along with several other enhancements.

he Isuzu D-Max has built up an enviable reputation among farmers across the country and this 100% workhorse pick-up truck has now teamed up with Tractor Ted, the popular children’s character that provides videos and fun activities for the nextgeneration of aspiring farmers.

Universally loved by children and parents alike, Tractor Ted helps educate children on modern farming practices through a series of charming films shared via YouTube, to over 40,000 channel subscribers. Fitting naturally into the agricultural setting, the rugged Isuzu D-Max is put through its paces on many of Tractor Ted’s adventures around the farm alongside Midge the dog and Merlin the pony.

Away from the cameras, the Isuzu D-Max Utah also mucks in with Farmer Tom, real name Tom Wheeler and a central character in Tractor Ted, for the day-to-day running of the 200ha organic Highchurch Farm in Somerset where its one-tonne payload and 3.5 tonne towing capacity are put to good use ferrying around machinery and produce.

I already drove an Isuzu before replacing it with the Utah having been introduced to it by hill sheep farming friends who recommended its robust nature. I haven’t looked back.

The 3.5 tonne towing capacity is also really handy around the farm and I love that I can flick from 2-wheel to 4-wheel drive at the switch of a button. I really can’t fault it in any way”.
